Edgy Veggies Biting Back Vegos get a lot of shit for being pushy. They say that they’ll always make sure their beliefs are known and will take any opportunity to try and convert you. But do you know how many times I’ve been approached by a pushy vegan, preaching their animal free lifestyle? Zero. Do you how many times I’ve been subjected to interrogation, insults and memes, ridiculing me for my choice to be vegetarian? Countless.

It’s an interaction that’s baffled me since I went vego. I decline some type of meat product, I don’t make a fuss, I just say “No thanks, I’m vegetarian” as a way of justifying this and further refusals, and suddenly, fuckers become a nutritionist and start grilling me on my protein sources or iron levels. That, or they’ll be downright offended, sometimes angry. How dare I make a decision based on entirely personal reasons that doesn’t affect them in any way? The cheek of it.

There are a myriad of reasons why someone would choose not to consume animal products and while you may be unable to fathom them, the counterculture of making fun of vegos for being pushy just makes you look ignorant. I don’t care what you eat, why do you care what I eat?

Sure, vegos can be self-righteous and pretentious, but so can anyone about anything, and generalising doesn’t help anyone in this situation, it just makes things a whole lot more negative over such an insignificant detail.

I’m ranting about this pre-emptively. This week in our Student Experience section, one of our writers, Laura, has created a “Vegan 101” and I know that despite the fact she isn’t pushy, and it’s a good read whether you’re interested in veganism or not, we’ll get at least one Snapchat making some revolutionary joke about veganism or how “the plants are being killed too”.

So how about, instead of judging or arguing a moot point, we try a little harder to learn stuff from each other, and see things from one another’s perspective?

Chances are, your vego friend probably doesn’t hate meat or walk around rolling their eyes at people eating cheeseburgers. They probably like it, but for reasons that are entirely their own, have decided not to eat it. Maybe if you asked them, they might have something interesting to tell you. ♦

Wowee! How ‘Bout That Election, Right?

Lyam Buchanan & James Raffan As most of you would have been aware, the general election was held on September 23rd.

As most of you may not have known, we sent this magazine off to print on September 21st.

In a bid to stay relevant by reporting on topical news. Because we’re the best fucking news team ever we’ve crafted a foolproof template for our gracious readers to ‘build your own election story’, regardless of the outcome.

Big Winners: The results are in and by golly gosh it was a real stunner for (read: N1/L1). Sadly positive vibes were not the case for (N2/L2).

The Decision Makers: The result leaves New Zealand First/The Greens/The Maori Party/TOP in a position to be kingmaker. (W1/G1/M1/T1) The Shock: The real shocker of the evening was (G2/W2/T2).

The Coalition Partners: The Greens will continue to stand with Labour in (Government/confidence and supply/Opposition). Dave Seymour cried today when he learned that he (will/won’t) be part of a National led fourth term. While everyone else is still deciding their fate.

A moment of silence for those banished from the Beehive: Sadly, every election brings some change. Here is a list of key figures who won’t be back (delete as applicable). Bill English, James Shaw, Sue Moroney, Jamie Strange, David Bennett, Ol’ mate Chlöe, Tim Shadbolt, Aaron Smith, Neil Quigley.

Finally… Regardless of any result, thanks to National’s make a wish foundation in Epsom, David Seymour will be back in parliament collecting a party leaders salary, combined with party perks, parliamentary resources and other expenses that newshub estimated to be over $500,000 of taxpayer money (2014*). (A1)

National 1: The National Party. While the polls ebbed and flowed it seems a combination of steady economic growth, scaremongering and a depressed youth vote will likely lead to a 4th term National government.

National 2: National, nevertheless their trust funds shall continue to provide invaluable support as the cull of soon to be retiring MPs begins.

Labour 1: The Labour Party. The polls had claimed that Jacinda had begun to lose her stardust but in the end she really came in clutch. Delivering the most progressive Government we have.

Labour 2: The Labour Party. It was sadly a case of all style no substance.

Greens 1: The Greens will now be in a position to get all progressive with Labour. Get your cap gains and recycling bins ready.

Greens 2: The Green party’s inability to secure 5%, which has left our managing editor inconsolably crying since Saturday at 8pm and pushed back marijuana reform another decade.

Winston 1: As expected Winston now holds both major parties to ransom and we all hold our breath.

Winston 2: New Zealand first both failed to make the five percent threshold and more importantly Winston failed to hold on to Northland meaning we could be seeing Winston finally ride off into the sunset.

Māori Party 1: The election is so hotly contested that the (1/2/3) MPs from the Māori Party will make all the difference to whether Bill or Jacinda will lead the country.

Māori Party 2 Labour/National want the (1/2/3) MPs from the Maori Party.

Now they will have to decide whether they want to be in Government or outside of it.

TOP 1: You read that right and honestly we are just as shocked as you.

TOP 2: Gareth, who, despite everything, made in into Government.

ACT 1: Nexus would like to remind you that David Seymour predicted he would be at 5% party vote this year. He was wrong when he did math in puppet master politics, when he said Winston Peters was a beneficiary, and when he said “Jacinda has done nothing.” Most of all, he was wrong when he said that Metiria Turei committed fraud, because he’s been getting close to $500,000 of our taxes to do nothing. That is real fraud.

Domestic Violence Victim Speaks Out Jennie-Louise Kendrick Warning: this story contains descriptions of physical and mental abuse in a domestic partnership. Nexus was contacted by a woman willing to speak up about her experiences, seeking legal help to free herself from a relationship she suggested was “an arduous and emotionally straining criminal process”.

It was important to her that this was used as a cautionary tale rather than news so we have decided to withhold the names of both parties.

Sadly, domestic abuse is far too common an occurrence in New Zealand and unfortunately the litany of cases we hear about are believed by experts to only be a fraction of those that happen. However, just because someone takes the first step to report what has been happening doesn’t guarantee they will be able to completely break free from their abuser.

Our interviewee told us of her near three year relationship, she says “it began with subtle abuse which was undetectable to me at the time, this eventuated into over a year of him terrorising me on a regular basis” and that “I just struggle to understand why [he] did this to me in the first place”.

The final year of their relationship was the worst, “I was injured on many occasions, he had the potential to kill me. He would use whatever was at arm’s reach to inflict pain, injure or threaten me. He would also damage property and items as a way to threaten and intimidate me.”

Court reporters told of how she described to the judge that he would kick her repeatedly, drag her across the room by the scarf wrapped around her neck, and once held his hand over her mouth so tightly, it caused her gums to bleed and her lower lip to swell.

She also told of one incident where he allegedly pushed her to the ground and held a knife to her face. “She yelled for help, your response was to tell her to be quiet or you would cut her face,” the judge said.

Eventually, she made the decision to leave and to press charges against her former partner.

She fled the city in an effort to start a new life for herself but says that her situation has only gotten more difficult because of inadequate or inappropriate assistance and support from the police, prosecutor and legal representatives from restorative justice involved in her case.

“I knew it was going to be difficult but I never knew it was going to be to this extent,” she said.

“He initially pleaded “not guilty” and continued to proclaim his innocence and “good character” whilst completely defacing my character; illustrating me as someone that I am not. This was with the assistance of his family and a friend that I have known for almost 20 years that he was able to coerce,” “It was incredibly demoralising” she told us.

community work and was ordered to pay $5000 in emotional harm reparation to her she feels the sentence has not helped her heal.

She suggested to Nexus that the lack of contrition has limited her ability to progress through recovery from the abuse. The abuse has left her with post-traumatic stress disorder; enduring self doubt, headaches, a lack of appetite and constant fatigue. It is a struggle for her to maintain her mental health, to eat, to sleep and to concentrate.

Our interviewee was adamant that the policy needs to change in New Zealand. “Criminals aren’t getting suitable sentences that adequate to the violent harm and grievance they have caused. A good character reference letter should not overshadow the deplorable crimes they have committed,” Her advice to the men and women considering pursuing legal action for domestic violence, “be aware that it is difficult and not an easy challenge, as there is virtually very little support for victims of crime.

“Being informed is always a great strength; do as much research as you can, email, make phone calls, inquire as much as you can… you cannot let your finger off the pulse because your perpetrator has got to be held accountable one way or another because until the law changes, that is all we have.

To date, she claims that she has still not received an apology from him. ♦

Hold Your Breath Cameron McRobie They say the best things in life are free, free food for instance is lovely. Freediving however is a sport reserved explicitly for psychopaths and merpeople. At a glance, freediving encompasses any subaquatic activity that neglects the use of the one thing that makes diving stomachable – breathing apparatus. These water-immersed goings-on include; spearfishing and freediving photography, synchronised swimming, underwater football, underwater rugby, underwater hockey, underwater target shooting and snorkelling. These activities, though technically freediving – are more tame than a psychedelic rock band founded by Kevin Parker in comparison to the big-kids world of competitive freediving.

The idea of competitive freediving is fucking terrifying not only because often divers can enter the depths where creatures named the likes of Snaggletooth and Vampire Squid dwell, also because besides the limits of breathhold, immersion in water and exposure to high ambient pressure also have physiological effects that limit the depths and duration possible in freediving. Basically, if you try to one up someone in a freedive, you may not come out on top (literally). There are currently eleven recognised disciplines defined by the freediving bodies AIDA and CMAS, these are all instances of apnoea, as an athlete succeeds or will beat a record by holding their breath longer than another. Variations include diving with or without fins, swimming horizontally underwater or diving vertically down and having to keep consistent weight or being allowed to drop weights at the bottom which aids ascent. Given that most of 10

us who aren’t in fact, half fish, could probably barely hold in a breath for two minutes without the added pressure (once again, literally) of being underwater – trying to swim directly down for longer than that, away from all the light, happiness and free food that the dry world has to offer just doesn’t compute.

Fortunately for us as a nation, freediving has once again provided New Zealand with a ridiculous sport that we have our very own deep sea creature to dominate for our international bragging rights. William Trubridge was not only the first person to break the 100m (depth) barrier unassisted by a guide rope or variable weight – but also has been ranked as the best overall free diver in the world after obtaining the highest combined score in six freediving disciplines; static apnoea (holding your breath submerged for as long as you can), dynamic apnoea with and without fins (pool disciplines), constant weight apnoea with fins, constant weight without fins, and free immersion (all depth disciplines). As of 2016, Willy proved himself top dog-fish once again in his preferred categories of constant weight without fins and free immersion – where he broke his previously held records by reaching 102 and 132 metres of depth respectively.

Unless you seriously thrive on physical and mental pain – I do not recommend taking up competitive free diving this summer. Stick to the Manus, please. ♦

SKY’s the Limit James Raffan Let’s Get Political: 3 Athletes Who Drew a Line in the Concrete: 3. Colin Kaepernick. When a Quarterback takes a knee it’s usually due to not having a play. When Kaepernick took a knee it was during the National anthem and because he thought black teens may also be out of options.

2. Justin Fashanu. Coming out can be tough. Coming out as the first openly gay British footballer in 1990 was probably unbearable. Many acknowledge that confluence of events and challenges following the admission contributed to his suicide at the end of the decade. To date he is still the only English player to be out of the closet during his playing career.

1. Mohammed Ali. I did think about going with Jackie Robinson but Jackie didn’t choose to be a story. From religion to Vietnam, Ali set the benchmark for the activist athlete.

Sports and politics have had a long and chequered history. In 1978, Muldoon’s Gleneagles agreement ultimately led to barbarian rugby players being labeled “honorary white” when touring South Africa and the police using big fuck off battens to knock the crap out of hippies who thought separate, but equal was actually a bit shit when the Springboks toured here.

Of course that was back in the day when both rugby and attending protests meant something.

Now the idea of racism in sports gets an “angry react” and the only thrashing at a Springboks game happens in front of ten people at North Harbour Stadium because rugby sucks and everyone knows it.

Politics is still prevalent in sports though; whether it’s a pregnant Serena or the fact that Colin Kaepernick can’t get a job because he thinks the police shooting unarmed black kids isn’t the best way to solve problems. We often talk about the negative impact politics has on sports but sometimes we should acknowledge that good things can be legislated too.

Which weirdly brings us to Australia. In 1991 our slower neighbours to the east started realising that Fox and others were buying up all the free to air sports they took for granted and said “Nah mate, nah” thus the Broadcasting Services Act of 1992 was born. Basically it passed into law with subsequent amendments that the Government broadcaster gets the uncontested right to negotiate for mainstream Australian sports or sports with a number of Australians in it.

The argument was the way to make Australia a great sporting nation was to let kids grow up watching their heroes regardless of whether

their parents could afford Sky. This included AFL, Rugby League, Netball, The A League and NBL. It’s not a bad theory but it has been laughed out of parliament a few times in New Zealand because Sky “funds a lot of sport” which is rightly a consideration. We don’t want our talented athletes missing out on funding.

So instead I have a counter proposal: 1. Get the Government to fund sports more than they currently do.

Good Time is the latest film by the Safdie Brothers, whose previous work includes the intimate Daddy Longlegs, and 2014’s unrelenting Heaven Knows What. Their newest release tells the story of a bank robber, Connie, who must fight to free his disabled brother from prison after a botched heist. From the opening shot, the audience is propelled headfirst into a nightmarishly surreal urban odyssey that, despite its dreamlike tone, manages to feel vibrant, authentic, and powerful. The crux of the film relies on the relationship between the two brothers, Connie and Nick, which brings a real emotional heft to the narrative. Despite the moral repugnance of the protagonist, we end up rooting for him to succeed because of this strong familial connection.

Taking place over the course of one night, the film almost feels like Scorsese’s underrated masterpiece, After Hours – with the craziness cranked up to 11. It’s an invigorating descent into the underbelly of New York, and though it is somewhat thin on plot, the film more than makes up for it with style. The cinematography is particularly effective; frequently using harsh close-ups that help to create an immersive sense of claustrophobia and tension. The film also occasionally pays homage to 70s exploitation films, with frantic zooms onto character expressions to heighten the emotion. While these small stylistic tributes may irritate some viewers, personally I thought it was a neat little touch.

The film is a neon drenched nightmare boasting great performances, an incredible soundtrack, and pulse-pounding cinematic vision. While it isn’t necessarily a ‘good time’, it sure as hell is an exhilarating one. ♦

Years ago, American Horror Story used to be a decent show. ‘Murder House’ and ‘Asylum’ were genuinely entertaining, with good acting, original ideas and most importantly, horror. However, over the last five seasons, the show has deteriorated so much that it has become a gross parody of itself.

Season 7, dubbed ‘Cult’ is nothing but rehashed ideas and characters, trying to present itself as cutting edge and topical. It more than fails to do so. The season is essentially around two things; The 2016 United States Presidential Election and the crazy clown craze. Meh. It just seems like American Horror Story has been beating a dead horse for the last four years, but now they’ve really caved in its skull. There is nothing exciting about it. The twists are predictable, the characters are duller than ever and the show overall is threadbare.

It seems that the show is trying to pander to the latest fads and people who want to see the same cast continue to make a shit television show.

American Horror Story always has potential, but fails to do anything with it. This season is no different. It deeply saddens me that potentially amazing TV shows are swept under the mat to make this drivel. I sincerely hope that the creators either pull finger and make a good season out of this, or decide to call it quits. The most horrifying thing about American Horror Story now, is that it’s going to be on air for another two seasons. That’s downright terrifying. ♦

Love What Survives is the third release by London electronic duo, Mount Kimbie. With the album, the duo break free of their ‘post-dubstep’ background, implementing an array of mixed genres into their music. Defying a clear categorisation, it’s a vibrant rainbow record of sound, emotion, and texture, exploring newfound stylistic realms that the duo has only previously touched upon. The result is an exciting new style that feels less like a ‘duo’ and more like a fully-fledged band. The album draws influence from, of course, electronic music, as well as prog-rock and post-punk, the latter of which is perhaps best exemplified in the standout single ‘Blue Train Lines’. Featuring previous collaborator, King Krule, the song almost sounds like a darker, more intense New Order track. Atop the rapid instrumentation, Krule’s shrieks and snarling vocals add a depth to the track that will undoubtedly be lost in live performances without him. The album features four guest vocalists: King Krule, Mica Levi, Andrea Balency, and James Blake – all of which blend seamlessly into the track listing. The fact that Mount Kimbie have crafted such a tight and cohesive record is extremely impressive, given the guests’ vastly different vocal styles. What could have resulted in a disparate and disjointed collection of songs, is instead an indication that the duo are loosening the restrictions on their musical style. ‘We Go Home Together’, featuring James Blake, is a brilliantly warped and dreamlike track, while ‘How We Got By’, also featuring Blake, provides a hauntingly beautiful conclusion to the record. The album also boasts visceral tracks such as ‘Delta’, an urgent electronic number that cranks up the intensity tenfold. It’s clear that Mount Kimbie have shed their previous ‘post-dubstep’ skin, but I guess you could say I love what’s survived… ♦

Kylie Price’s second EP Bones is a stripped-back and melodic musical offering. Bones’ six songs chart the nuances, warmth and anxieties of love.

The songs are haunting and melancholic, melding acoustic and electric guitar with layered vocals.

Paying tribute to both her country and blues roots with the multilayered opening track. Price sings of the desire to strip back and rebuild, realising the need to withdraw into herself and recuperate. In a particularly playful line, she sings “I could pretend to go to church, but that’d make me a liar.”

‘In Here With Me’, Price introduces a faster, snappier sound. She speaks of trying to keep her head down, and the world out, yet she realises she’s “been kidding” herself. The song speaks to the need for love and companionship, and the anxiety that accompanies the ups and downs of a relationship.

There’s a growl in her voice as she sings of lost love.

‘My Love’ with its layered harmonies, echoes the first one on the album, but is more forceful and catchy. It begins with a playful guitar riff, and then Price’s rich voice comes floating on through. She taps into the frustration of drifting through life, “with my pocket of pills and smoke in my lungs”. What I particularly enjoyed about ‘My Love’ is how Price alters the speed of her singing to reflect the lyrics, dancing quickly through the lines “tripping on down” for example. You’ll find yourself humming the signature tune long after Spotify has moved onto the next song.

Bones is an beautiful and atmospheric EP with striking and confessional lyrics. Price’s frank yet poetic lyrics and soaring voice are a joy to listen to.“ They could send you to Mars and I’d wait patiently for you” she sings on the final track. They could send Kylie Price to Mars and I’d wait patiently for her next musical offering. ♦ 15

The End of the World?

A tour through New Zealand's special brand of Purgatory Purgatory in Dante’s Divine Comedy is depicted as a mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, consisting of a bottom section (Ante-Purgatory), seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth (associated with the seven deadly sins), and finally the Earthly Paradise at the top. It seems the Seven Deadly Sins are as relevant today as when Pope Gregory the Great listed them in the late sixth century.

It was just before dawn when the wind started to pick up, yanking at my dress as I stood on the prow of the ship. A faint purple glow heralded the arrival of the sun, yet all was not well. It seemed like millennia had flown by since I had last stood on solid ground, or heard the voice of a kind stranger. It would be tedious to trouble the reader with the particulars of our adventures in the South Pacific seas; let it suffice to inform him, that in our passage across the vast ocean, we were driven by a violent storm to the north-west of a strange land.

I woke to the sound of a curious humming noise. There, gathered before me as far as the eye could see, was a seething mass of toga-wearing individuals, glaring at me and muttering under their breath. Some were wearing floral bed sheets, draped around their stocky frames, while others had invested in the finest Egyptian linen Bed, Bath and Beyond had to offer. One man stood out from the crowd. He wore a curious green bucket hat emblazoned with the strange slogan ‘Speight’s: Pride of the South.’ He clutched a dripping goon bag. The sight of the low-grade

wine made my stomach roil and I turned away from the crowd. “Hello!” said the boy, smiling at me. “Welcome to Dunedin! You’re in the fine land of Aotearoa!” His enthusiasm raised my spirits, and encouraged by his welcoming attitude, I told the long and weary tale of how I had come to be in this sad state. I had fled the crumbling ruins of my once-great nation in hope of a new life in the beautiful land of New Zealand. The toga-wearing natives warmed to me, and ripples of laughter and empathy ran through the crowd. But the leader, the hat-wearing boy, looked worried.

His brow furrowed, he stepped forward and a hush fell on the gathering.

“This is not the paradise you are looking for. We may seem clean, green and prosperous, but all is not well. I must take you on a tour of this city. My name is V.” With that, he marched me off into the city, thrusting a Jimmy’s pie in my hand for nourishment.

My new friend lead me to a bus stop on George St. The sign was tattered, and spots of grey chewing gum decorated the bench.

“Look,” cried V, pointing a grubby finger.

“There goes one of them!” I squinted in the

watery sunlight as a rather dishevelled young woman made her way past us, holding her heels in one hand and a can of Red Bull in the other. I turned to my friend. “Kind sir,” I said, “this young woman appears to be partaking in the ‘stride of pride’. I have heard of such marches before, and I do not understand their significance. If this country’s young people wish to engage in safe, consensual sex, what matter is it to me?”

V sighed, and lit a cigarette. “It’s not the sleeping around that’s the problem,” he said, taking a long drag, “it’s the widespread sexually transmitted infections that are raging through this nation’s young people.”

I shuddered. “More than 28,000 people, including 465 children aged between 10 and 14-years-old, were diagnosed with chlamydia in New Zealand last year.” My skin crawled. “Our young people, distracted by the constant gratification of Tinder and the cloying effect of peer pressure are engaging in unsafe sexual practices.” I shifted in my seat, remembering with guilt a few drunken one-night stands of my youth.

Still, it didn’t seem so bad. We strolled on through the dusty streets until we came upon a half-naked young man, sprawled out on the gravel. He seemed to be clutching a can of something called ‘Diesel’. I was confused. Back home, we poured diesel into our cars and motorbikes. V turned to me and put down his goon bag in shame. “I’m the first to admit that we have a drinking problem,” he said. “Most New Zealanders enjoy alcohol in moderation, but there are many who binge drink.” I smiled. “Do you mean partaking in a glass of wine or four every so often?” I asked. My friend shook his head. “Try seventeen,” he replied. “Alcohol is probably the most underrated, insidious drug out there. It’s honestly terrifying.” His face indeed was the face of one who had seen many horrific things. It frightened me. “You see, we lose so many young people to suicide and senseless actions that are exacerbated or brought on by alcohol consumption. It’s not right. And yet, alcohol’s effects are lauded in our ‘role models’ — the sportspeople, politicians and other high-profile members of society, who are usually forgiven for their indiscretions. No wonder our young people follow their example.”

“Anyway,” said V. “Let us move on. We have many more things to see.” I shuddered.

A dusty, red old Toyota was pulled up in a side-street, the windows fogged up with condensation. We peered inside, to see a whole family curled up inside, sleeping in the cramped car. “Unfortunately,” said my guide, rubbing his eyes, “this is a common sight. Inequality has corroded our country like rust. We have homeless families sleeping in cars and garages right next to multimillion dollar spare mansions.” Was the New Zealand Government unaware of this?

“Successive Governments have failed to address social housing and the whole issue around home ownership,” said V, shaking his head. “And while wealth isn’t the only thing that determines happiness, it certainly impacts the kind of life a person can lead. We have the resources to help. Yet we won’t.” He turned his face away. “The wealthiest tenth own nearly a fifth of the country’s net worth, while the poorest half of the country has less than five per cent.” I understood. Unequal societies are less functional, less cohesive and less healthy than their more equal counterparts. Back home, people had lost touch with how ‘the other half ’ lived, and distrust had eaten away at the bonds between people. We had become a weak nation.

“Come, let’s carry on,” I said to V, dragging him away from the car. We wandered for awhile in silence, past towering mansions and white picket fences. In one manicured garden sat a fat child, poking at an iPad. V laughed. “Oh yes,” he said, “we’re a nation of heroes. Heroes at Farmville or Fruit Ninja, that is. As if the poverty and rampant STIs weren’t enough, we’re also one of the most obese nations in the world. Almost one in three adults are obese, and one in nine children are porkers too.” I glanced down at my ample waistline and wiped the piecrumbs off my shirt. “It’s truly an epidemic,” said V. “We’ve seen skyrocketing rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes and several common cancers as a result of this obesity.

It’s putting mounting pressure on our health systems. We need to look right across the spectrum for how we are going to tackle this crisis, from education, to nutrition, to promoting more active lifestyles.” It seemed I had escaped a problematic nation for one only slightly less so.

We continued to wander on, waving goodbye to the technology-obsessed little boy.

He ignored us. My thoughts began to wander,

until an agonised cry broke my reverie. V put a finger to his lips, and we fell silent. “That’s probably the sounds of domestic abuse you’re hearing. New Zealand has the worst rate of family and intimate-partner violence in the world. A shocking 80 per cent of incidents go unreported — so what we know of family violence in our community is barely the tip of the iceberg.” What the actual fuck, I thought.

So much for a ‘civilised’ country. “Yeah,” said V, seeing my face, “it’s bloody horrific. What’s even worse though, is that it’s a taboo subject.

Because it goes on behind closed doors, no one really acknowledges it. “I don’t know if people really are aware of the severity of the problem,” he said. “Yet domestic violence is one of the leading causes of injury and death to women, and also leads to short and longterm health problems such as mental illness, and problems with sexual and reproductive health.” I could feel my breakfast coming up, and I ducked around the corner to vomit.

What was wrong with this country?

V patted me sympathetically on the shoulder. “Come on, old girl,” he said, “we’re almost there. Only a few more stops on this tour to go.” We left the suburbs and walked on into the business sector of the city. A cluster of teenagers were arguing over which Apple cellphone model was the best. A small child had glued herself to the window, gazing in on the technicoloured display of stuffed toys.

“Yup,” said V, “we’re also pretty materialistic here! Envy is one of the most pervasive sins out there.” I recalled the materialism of my old President; his mammoth gold towers reaching to the sky, like that of Babel of old.

The marketing machine of corporate America had fed into this insatiable desire. Our greed and envy had blinded us to the true horrors of the new Government. It was sickening to see that little Aotearoa had fallen prey to Moloch.

These people were being persuaded to spend money they didn’t have, on things they didn’t need to create fleeting impressions on people they cared little about.

“You have seen a lot today,” said my guide, a wry smile on his face. “But there is one final place I must take you, so that you might understand the true insanity of our country.”

Heartsore and soul-weary, I followed my guide towards a strangely shaped, white building at the edge of the harbour. Twilight was growing, and the clear sky made my heart ache for peace and solitude, far away from

this godforsaken island. My musings were interrupted by a horrific roar that echoed through the hills. Was there a lion nearby?

Or perhaps an intoxicated moa? V laughed at the terrified expression on my face. “It’s only the rugby,” he said, “and the sound you hear is from the excited crowd.”

We crept into the building and took our seats on the edge of a large stand. On the north side of the pitch was an enclosed area, full of inebriated students mimicking a gang of baboons in heat. “Here,” began V, “is the final sin I’d like you to bear witness to. Rugby is the God of our nation. It is an all-consuming obsession, a source of hubristic pride for all Kiwis, from the muddy toddler chasing after his brothers, to the weathered old crone down at the pub.” I watched the sweaty men fight over the egg-shaped ball. Was this some obscure mating ritual? The Kiwi version of a stag fight, or the gaudy display of a peacock’s tail? “It’s suffocating, isn’t it?” sighed V. “We’ve got so many things going on in this country besides rugby. It seems as if everyone, high on the success of the All Blacks and the ephemeral happiness they offer, seem unaware of the real problems out there.” He stood up, began stripping off his clothes, and vaulted the fence. As I watched him streak across the pitch, I could hear him bellowing, “it’s time to question this obsession with rugby!

It’s distracting us from the important social, economic and environmental threats facing our fine country!” The bemused players turned on him, and in one accord tackled the poor bugger. That was the last I heard of V. I shook my head. If the same amount of interest, care and attention was devoted to the strains of inequality, slothfulness and violence infecting this strange country, perhaps it would actually live up to its shiny, perfect image. I had seen enough. New Zealand, the first country to give women the vote has one of the highest rates of domestic abuse in the developed world, and inequality between the rich and the poor was obviously accelerating with the speed of a spinning rugby ball, booted by the sainted Daniel Carter. The happiness of this nation almost seems to rest on those 80 minutes of rugby.

I had had enough. Sensing that V was lost to the wrath of the rugby fans, I abandoned my only friend and walked out into the darkness. Surely I would be able to find passage to Australia… ♦

WSU needs a President that will strengthen the relationship with the University to deliver funding for more club activities, better O-week events and redevelopment of our campus to include things like a student lounge and bar. Ever since starting my studies Waikato University, I have wanted to become more involved in making a positive difference in our university, for the benefit of all students and staf. Examples of things that I would like to achieve are more affordable parking, a bigger student hub/lounge where all students can go during breaks to have fun and relax with friends, and more events that accommodate all types of students i.e. balls, galas, on campus outdoor concerts and festivals etc.

With these reasons, I feel like I would be able to, with the other members of the WSU, make a positive change in the University in the coming year.

I am hoping to be part of the WSU board of directors in 2018, and offer a new and unique outlook on things. Nominee for Director “If you have a voice, speak out for others”, my mom would always say. This has become a defining statement in my life, and I hope that through this position, I can use my voice to speak for you. As a 5th year international student from Malaysia and working as an RA at the halls on campus, I’d like to bring more WSU involvement into international student integration and interhall events. I’d also look to improving communication processes and supporting new club initiatives. I am currently studying a Masters degree in Management Studies. My undergrad and postgrad papers connect faculties of both communication and creative arts, allowing me skills in both. I’ve also been involved in clubs on campus in different leadership positions and as club president. These different student identities collected through these experiences have allowed me to create intersectional ideas which would bring a unique voice for the board.

How do you do fellow kids? I’m Conor, I’ve been around Waikato University for longer than I’d like to admit, so figured it’s about time I gave back to University community. After experimenting with several half degrees, I finally settled on a Bachelor of Environmental planning. Think of me as the friend who grabs a potentially electric fence so you don’t have to.

I think the WSU have been doing a stand job these past few years with the limited finances and support available to them.

However there’s still a way to go to create a real student culture on campus that we can all be proud of. An increased club presence, more student events and more of those free rides to and from town that we all love is a good starting point. A vote for me and I’ll endeavor to keep this train rolling. I’m a second year biology and earth sciences student and I’m super keen to get more involved with making the university a better place for us students! It would be great to have more of a science student perspective on the WSU board. I’m already a part of several awesome clubs, including WUSSA, CS3 and the new Ultimate Frisbee club (WUUF), and I’m eager to take the next step to improve club culture. I’m looking at working with the WSU administration team to improve club output and communication.

With some changes this could mean bigger, better events and heaps more opportunities for everyone! I’d love to make the university more environmentally sustainable and I’m prepared to push hard for some cool new spaces for us to hang out in between classes – a student run milkshake bar? A bakery? Cosy little coffee lounge? Hmu!

My name is Francis Okpaleke and I am running for the position of Director in WSU. My ambition is motivated by the drive for a better student experience and leadership. To do this I am positioned to work with a dynamic team in delivering and ensuring transformational cultural, academic and recreational experience on campus. HOW TO VEGAN

You’re reading this article about veganism because: 1. you’ve decided to go vegan.

2. are already vegan.

3. interested in veganism.

4. turned the page of Nexus and stumbled across this beauty of an article.

Whatever reason resonates, you may as well keep reading and potentially learn something incredibly useful, who knows.

This is How to Vegan 101, the guide that shows just how easy veganism can be. As a university student, it’s unfeasible to think that any of us can spend hundreds on food for the week. However, making the decision not to consume any form of animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs and honey does not have to be expensive. In fact, many of the cheapest food options available are vegan.

I’m going to give you all the basic insider tips on what to eat as a vegan and how to achieve this on a student budget.

As with any dietary choice, it’s important to make sure that we receive enough nutrients.

Here is a quick low-down on what the typical daily vegan diet should look like: 26

Grains

Breakfast

→→ 6 or more servings of grains, (a serving is ½ cup cooked, ½ cup dry cereal, 1 slice of wholemeal bread). →→ Carbs are your friends, not your enemy! On a vegan diet, cheap foods like bread, rice and oats should be consumed every day… so go hard, but don’t base your diet entirely around carbs.

Homemade muesli with banana and almond milk.

Legumes →→ 3-4 servings of legumes- (a serving is a ½ cup of cooked legumes or 1 cup soy milk). →→ Hello Protein! Foods like beans, peas and lentils are dirt cheap and easy to incorporate in meals such as curries and pasta dishes.

More expensive, but delicious legumes include tofu and soy milk. Top tip: bake tofu in the oven for 15 minutes on 180 degrees to end up with the best damn tofu you will ever taste.

Vegetables →→ 5 or more servings a day because your mother was right when she told you to “eat your greens”. A serving is ½ cup cooked or 1 cup raw. Pizza lovers rejoice… just request for more capsicum and corn on your next order.

Snack Apple

Lunch Green smoothie (looked gross, tasted great!) and cucumber and hummus

Snack Three bliss balls (recipe to follow) and two kiwifruit

Dinner Pasta with bean bolognese: this bolognese recipe can be made by anyone, no matter their cooking skill level and serves at least two dinners.

I use black beans, but any would work i.e. kidney beans, cannellini beans.

Fry onion, add a tin of tomatoes, add 1 tin of drained black beans & a few chopped vegetables (carrots, peas, mushrooms). Add 1 teaspoon of maple syrup to sweeten & salt & pepper. Serve with pasta. DONE!

Fruit →→ An apple a day (or 2) keeps the doctor away! On a vegan diet, aim to consume 2 or more servings of fruit per day (a serving is 1 medium piece of fruit; 1/2 cup cooked fruit; 1/4 cup dried fruit). Easy, just bring two apples to uni and voila, fruit consumption complete.

Why fruit you ask? Because they have huge sources of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, the perfect prescription to preserve that fresh 20-year-old face of yours.

Nuts and Seeds →→ Not essential but HIGHLY recommended! A small handful makes this an incredibly easy snack requiring no food preparation. Just grab a handful and relish in the knowledge that these healthy fats will make your hair shinier, nails stronger and skin more radiant.

RECIPES Bliss Balls

Bean and Cauliflower Tacos

Bliss balls have become increasingly popular in New Zealand in the recent years. While the store-bought ones don’t lack in taste, they are overpriced and wrapped in plastic, not something we should be supporting.

Here is my recipe that creates chewy, fudge like balls of chocolatey goodness!

I recently discovered baked cauliflower and trust me, it’s a goodie. →→ Just toss cauliflower florets in some spices (I use cumin and curry powder) and bake in the oven on a high heat until golden brown. →→ I then add whatever I fancy and whatever I have on hand. The ones in the photo include black beans, the baked cauliflower, avocado (which was a tasteless disappointment), alfalfa sprouts and a drizzle of tahini. →→ I buy Farrah’s wraps, all of which are 100% vegan. The 12 pack “Flamed Baked Taco Tortillas” are the ones pictured.

→→ 1 cup nuts of choice (I used a mix of the cheapest available: peanuts and cashews) →→ 1 cup dried dates, which have been soaked in hot water for a minute or 2. →→ 2 tablespoons cacao powder (or cocoa powder) →→ Coconut for rolling Instructions: 1. Place the nuts into the blender/food processor.

2. Blend until a flour like consistency is reached 3. Add the rest of ingredients 4. Roll into balls and coat in coconut

Where to shop in Hamilton?

As someone who is consciously trying to limit my negative impacts on the environment, I attempt to shop in a manner that reduces this.

Bin Inn, Hamilton East allows customers to bring their own containers for the bulk bin items, which are nearly all vegan! Bulk bins are great ways to limit plastic usage from our lifestyle, as well as being a more affordable way to shop.

Every food item I have mentioned in this article can be bought at Bin Inn, as well as specialty vegan items. These include, Pana Chocolate, The Goodtime Pie Company’s frozen vegan pies and Little Island vegan ice cream and coconut milk.

Jacqui Swney Today, I present you with some rainy day tunes.

Whether you’re too cool to use an umbrella; fastwalking from your flat with nothing shielding you but a cotton hoodie (which inevitably gets drenched in the torrential downpours of spring); or you’re the kid who skips class altogether to binge Netflix and just use the rain as an excuse to do it more often, these songs set a cozy vibe and are complimented well by the pattering of rain on a roof (or something cheesy like that).

Stay warm kids.

Unchained Melody by Lykke Li The original version of this song, released by the Righteous Brothers in the 60s, remains an all time favourite of mine. It makes me think of some diner with checkered floors and a joke box and drinking milkshakes with two straws.

But Lykke Li has slowed it down and stripped it back to just her vocals and a piano. While I still prefer the original and all its cliches, this is a simpler version of an old classic and it is a beautiful listen.

Only Love by Ben Howard Ben Howard is a top notch singer songwriter, and there’s really not a song of his that I don’t enjoy. His sound is laid back and delicious. His guitar skills are primo, his lyrics are simple, honest and heartfelt, and he layers his songs skilfully. The raspiness of his voice adds texture (if that makes sense) to his music and keeps things raw and real. I’ve rinsed his first album for years, and I always come back to it to put me in a certain mood. 15/10 30

22 (over s∞∞n) by Bon Iver Every self-proclaimed hipster in history has asked the question, “But do you listen to Bon Iver?”. And while For Emma, Forever Ago is a great album, I would encourage those selfproclaimed hipsters to branch out of the safe arms of ‘Skinny Love’ and into some more recent masterpieces. This song in particular showcases Bon Iver’s production skill, showing that he’s not just some singer-songwriter that abuses the piano to make people feel something. The layers to this song are intricate and substantial, not to sound like a pretentious self-proclaimed hipster.

Youth by Daughter The lyrics in this song are a touch melodramatic, but the vibe overall is a good one.

The intro starts quiet and simple, with a nice bit of guitar and some clear and crisp vocals.

But the sound builds as the song progresses, becoming more intense as the lyrics do too.

We do get periodic breaks from the intensity, providing a nice moment of clarity. Overall a great song, 8/10. ♦

Sometimes it’s simply knowing where to look.

Hidden gems everywhere.

On campus, for instance, in the unprepossessing corridor of the Performing Arts Centre, check out what’s hanging on the walls. The paintings you will see are the work of artist, Elliot Mason and represent that perennial attempt to take traditional art forms and make them contemporary. It’s the modernist impulse.

Lots of splash and dash going on here, techniques borrowed from the Americans that reach back to the middle of last century, channelling artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.

The Abstract Expressionists had a serious agenda, being the post-Holocaust and post atomic bomb generation. They in fact were looking to redeem civilization. It was major overreach. But the methods and practices live on here in the work of Mason, used to transfigure ancient Māori iconography and dress it up in new garb.

One sees mania figures hiding amongst the swirls and splashes of bright coloured pigments and vigorous rough brushwork. The title to the show, Transformation, has an agenda to do with cultural identity, post-colonial history and cultural dislocation.

The neo-Expressionism here also recalls that of African American, Jean-Michel Basquait.

Closer to home the work of Kura Rewiri-Thorsen and Zena Elliott are in the same tradition. The irony is that the “making it new” mantra ends up by employing old tricks.

Another little gem hidden away in a small

gallery off the beaten track is the work of Dominique Marriott showing at David Lloyd Gallery on Lake Crescent. Her exquisite nudes in simple linear charcoal lines reveal a completely assured hand, perfectly capturing the form of the human body, sensitively portrayed. No agenda here except the display of skill and the posed nude that does not exploit the model.

The rendering of the hair, in a stylised fashion, adds a nice counterpoint to the otherwise realistic presentation.

Make your way down Commerce Street Frankton and this unlikely location will lead you to the most avant-garde gallery in Hamilton.

Here you will encounter the work of Mason Holloway and his ink on paper illustrations.

What makes these particularly arresting is that they take their inspiration from two famous literary works – Albert Camus’, The Outsider, and Dostoyevsky’s, Crime and Punishment. His collaged creations with a touch of the surreal employs an expressionist form that works particularly well for the subject.

And over at the Wallace Gallery, Morrinsville, you can see the work of Dale Copeland channelling Don Driver with her surreal assemblages that can be read as part nightmare conundrums part Alice in Wonderland enigmas. ♦

Eco Emporium Things You Can Do Today, and Tomorrow and the Next Day Valerie Bianchi Is reading the news making you feel all doom and gloom about the state of the environment and our very future on earth? Me too! But I have the antidote to your apocalyptic sense of dread: Action.

Here are things you can do today and for the next week, to take action that will contribute to a healthier, happier you and better environment.

Everything adds up!

1. Go outside. That’s right! Enjoy the magic of our beautiful country. Breathe in the clean air, listen to the tuis and connect to our environment. There are a number of accessible outdoor experiences in and around Hamilton, like the University Campus (Rongoa Garden, Fernery), Hamilton Gardens and Waikato River walkway to name a few.

2. Reduce your consumption. Before you leave your house, think about doing things like powering down your computer and turning off outlets. This will reduce your energy consumption, and save money! Can you walk or bike to your destination? What about sharing a ride or taking the bus? These steps help reduce your petrol consumption.

3. Reuse and refuse! On your outdoor jaunt, if you are bringing a coffee or water to sip along the way, use reusable options (metal, glass and ceramic are preferable) instead of creating waste with plastic drink bottles or drink cups that you will have in your hands for mere minutes before dumping. Out having a drink?

Tell the bartender to not give you a straw.

4. Be informed and vote. Participating in our democratic process is extremely important.

Our government makes major decisions that are going to affect the health of our environment and thus the nation and you as an individual. There is a great resource available

by The Spinoff about different political parties’ stance on different environmental issues. You can select the policies you prefer and it graphs your choices at the end. (policy. thespinoff.co.nz/topic/Environment) 5. Talk to other people. Have you successfully banned plastic bags or drink straws from your life? Tell your friends and whanau! Get other people involved in some positive actions.

These are not radical steps to take on their own.

But, they are so different from the way we live our modern lives of convenience, that once you start doing them it will start to change the world.

When you can’t think of anything else to do in Hamilton, why not spend your hard earned Studylink dollars on someone else’s clothes.

Not only is second hand shopping ridiculously trendy now places like Recycle Boutique make it even easier to purchase some real preloved gems. Not to mention that buying second hand is reusing consumable items which helps reduce the impact of disposable fashion that’s all around us. Hamilton is full of Op-shops so there is no reason to not get amongst the slightly stale smelling clothes.

SaveMart Te Rapa Before you even think of heading into this place, you better be well hydrated and have eaten within the last hour ‘cause this shop is bloody huge. While all of the planes at Hamilton Airport could fit inside this warehouse, this shed is actually packed to the rafters with some mint pieces and forgotten Caroline Eve Blouses. I have fond memories of this SaveMart because my sister took me when I was an edgy preteen to purchase my first piece of second hand clothing, I still own that Green Day hoodie to this day. It can be overwhelming if you haven’t been before but all the clothes are neatly organised into sections. The women’s section is massive and is almost impossible to look through in one go, I personally devote the majority of my rifling to the vintage section down the back and the men’s because I love a good Woodstock tee and a flannel. I’ve also seen ball gowns, wedding dresses, wetsuits and about 15 million Dio tracksuit jackets here.

Once you’ve found something worth taking you home, you get to approach the oddly tall desk that has no need to be that height and makes everyone stretch to put their card in the Eftpos machine.

SaveMart Frankton Oh wow, another SaveMart? Yep. This one is considerably smaller, so is much less stressful.

They seem to have a higher proportion of turtlenecks and baggy sweaters which may reflect the demographic of Frankton but I feel like that is slightly wrong. On the whole, this SaveMart seems to carry a slightly higher quality of the average article of clothing but be warned, it is harder to find stuff that doesn’t look like it belongs to an elderly David Bain. Still worth a visit because their clothes often change so who knows what you might find.

Look Smart Te Rapa Now this gem is well hidden behind a home brewery store and a kayak shop. You are bound to find Holden and Ford t-shirts here but there is also an awesome vintage section against the back wall. There are ski-suits, chef outfits, mink coats, gowns and a huge array of Hawaiian shirts. All of my outfits I wore to RnV last year came from this store, mostly being Hawaiian shirts so no one could really tell if I was a girl or a small white boy. I highly recommend this shop because not only do they have clothes for any occasion and it doesn’t smell, but this place is always having sales for some reason so that’s just an added bonus. ♦ 33

Yam and Troy the Science Boys Composite Materials Troy the Science Boy I was having a gander at the old Snapped section last week and came upon a picture of one Rob Torrens standing next to ‘1 + 1 = 3’ on a whiteboard.

I nostalgia-tripped hard; back to the good old days of material science, where our resident composites expert, Professor Kim Pickering would be miraculously absent from her lecture and Rob would have to step in and spin some composite material yarns for the remainder of the lecture time. I’m sorry to inform, but those of you that have never had a Torrens lecture, have learned nothing in your entire university career as he is a close tie for first with James Carson as best lecturer on the planet.

So composites, what the fuck are they all about? Well, let’s start with 1 + 1 = 3, what the fuck is that all about? That is the clever way Torrens explains synergy (probably also hinting at totalitarianism or some shit as well). Synergy is where two entities are combined, whether they be businesses or materials or whatever, and the resulting properties are much greater than the sum of the individuals. There is a positive benefit as the result of some black magic when the two things in question are joined. This is the case for a great many composite materials. On their own, materials have regular ass properties, but when combined in certain ways, those properties go through the goddamn stratosphere, surpassing all but Nexus Magazine in quality.

The key idea behind a composite material is that you bond the materials to one another and improve the properties. The most basic of composite structures, is chopping and milling up a bunch of one material and mixing and 34

curing it with another matrix material. This is typically an epoxy resin but that is not always the case. The fibres in your matrix are capable of stopping crack propagation and have vastly improved its strength. Cool, you’ve just made a bomb ass material that’s pretty strong and pretty lightweight. But wait, there’s more; the method in which you combine your fibres and matrix can alter your composites properties wildly. Before you know it you could have a material stronger than a steel beam that you could quite easily throw about without displacing back discs.

One of the best examples of this that has been making its name recently, is carbon fibre.

Material scientists have been experimenting with woven carbon fibre in their matrices. This means that not only does the fibre stop crack propagation, but also has additional strength from its interlocking strands. This composite can be up to 10 times stronger than steel and aluminium and up to five times lighter. And that boys and girls, is how you waste a shitload of the country’s money and also make a boat that goes lots faster than other countries’ boats. ♦

WUG Life The Future of WUGS Tom Featonby WUGS (Waikato United Gaming Society, if you’re not up to play with that one yet) not drugs. Yep, we got rhymes! We also got video games and good times. Oh shit, I promise that second one was unintentional. Anyway… WUGS is almost ready to turn two years old. Seems mental. It’s been such a massive learning curve in so many different ways. We started off with high hopes, to become the biggest club on campus, and we may still get there, but we’ve got a long way to go.

These past couple of years have been really fun, with all sorts of gaming stuff to keep most gamers happy. We’ve put on LANs, tournaments and social meetups which have all been awesome.

We’ve also done a few things which haven’t gone so well, like our misstep into League of Legends with our complete flop trying to get a university team off the ground (we’ll try again next year maybe). With the anniversary coming up we need to look to the future of WUGS, where to now?

We’ve got two main options: grow what we do well, social and fun events or we can diversify and add value to the club by getting into esports. It sounds easy right? Put on a few tournaments, get some sponsors to hand over some prizes. More prizes, more members for the club. Unfortunately getting prizes from already stretched thin promotions budgets is super tough. Even though WUGS has been around for a little while, we’re still a relative unknown in the NZ gaming scene. That needs to change if we want to succeed.
