What is popular culture? Generally it can be understood as the stuff of mainstream.

It's easily accessible art and entertainment — it's the tv shows and movies you watch (and the comedy* based on references to the characters and plots in these stories); it's the games you play and the slang you use when you talk shit with your friends; it's the memes in your newsfeed; it's the fiction you read and the magazines you skim.

Popular (read: of the population) + culture (read: shared practices, interests and attitudes) = the stuff that a solid chunk of us fill our spare time with. I'm sure you've all heard the phrase "becoming cultured", and I hope it makes you roll your eyes at the elitism that's inherent. We ALL have a culture, and it's fuckin' snobby for people with more money to assume that their culture is better or should be more valued.

Plus, we're kind of obliged to defend the low brow, mass produced, easily accessible forms of culture since I don't think there's any chance student media could be considered high brow. We also doubt electronic music can be considered high brow, so we stooped to the lowest of the low and interviewed DJ duo Stack & Piece (p.14). Meanwhile, Nina Fox (p.18) has learnt that maybe hundreds of screaming girls are right and that Justin Bieber may just be our Lord and Saviour.

People like to crap on about the 'PC Police' and censorship of free speech, but we're pretty okay in New Zealand in 2016. The influence of religious 'morality' is of little consequence to The Bachelor or Outrageous Fortune (RIP), but it did have a lot to do with film censorship throughout history (p.20).

On the topic of censorship, what are your thoughts on certain Wicked campervans being banned due to R rated content? A reasonable protection for children?

Atletico’s defence has been phenomenal through La Liga and in the CL and I believe if they can bring this same level of defence to Milan and capitalise on counter attacking opportunities they will lift the Champions League trophy on the 28th.

The addition of new teams also means the fixtures are more confusing than last year. Okay, I get that each team plays six games in their own conference and all that, but this makes it so much easier for the decent South African sides. I would much rather be coming up against the lesser South African sides than having to play teams from New Zealand week in, week out. The better South African teams are getting a free ride to the playoffs, considering they will play their own sides more than the New Zealand teams.

Where the competition really falls down is the playoffs system. It should go on who has the most points, which funnily enough would see all the New Zealand sides (apart from the Blues) in spots one, two, three and four. It is a joke that sides like the Hurricanes or Highlanders would have to fight for a wild card spot in the playoffs when they are so much better than teams from other nations.

This year “Super” Rugby has gone way downhill. For the viewer it is less interesting and only hardcore fans will watch anything apart from their own team. If Super Rugby really was to be a decent product the three new teams should be scrapped and it should be winner takes all in terms of playoff places.

Or the New Zealand teams should leave the competition and just play each other every weekend, that’s something I’d watch.

I cannot say that Captain America: Civil War is a bad movie, I just cannot. I saw it, I enjoyed it, and it was good. Flawed, but good because it is nice and easy to watch. Your basic kind of Marvel superhero movie. Here heroes fight, the plot is resolved, and it’s business as usual again at the end. It follows Marvel’s winning formula ably, but in doing so, it also continues to highlight some of the problems with the formula.

After their previous antics, the governments of the world want to place the Avengers under the oversight of the United Nations. Iron Man says yes, Cap says no, and the Avengers split 50/50 on the issue. But the politics and debate is mostly swept away and used as a tool to create the two necessary sides of the Civil War. The crux of the movie revolves around Cap finding his brainwashed assassin friend Bucky, and saving him from the somewhat confusing evil plan of Zemo. Along the way, all the Avengers (and Spider-Man) get to stop for a bit and fight each other.

The fight scene between the heroes is undeniably epic, and easily the highlight of the movie. However, coming just over halfway into the movie, what comes after cannot match up to it. The last part of the movie is devoted to finding out what

What medium/s do you tend to work in and why?

Lately I have moved from using coloured pencil to Copic Markers for my illustrations. I use them because they are an amazing product to work with. The colours are vibrant and they all blend together really well. I also use whiter gel pens for all the highlighting and dot work that you see in most of my illustrations. I also paint and when I do, I use Golden acrylics for the same reason I use Copics. The colours are super vibrant and never go muddy. I prefer to illustrate on bristol board because I feel I have strong control of both mediums and can apply more detail when using them.

How often do you make art?

I make art every single day. I cant lay down straight in bed at night if I haven't, and in those cases I usually flick the light back on and do a little sketch to make me feel better.

Kurt Cobain, Lady Di, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Amy Winehouse, Alan Rickman, Prince and David Bowie all have one thing in common: death. Or more precisely, large scale, public grief in response to their death. But why do we give a fuck when celebrities die? Nina Fox explores, defending fandom.

I’ve got something truly embarrassing to confess… I’m a recent convert to the Belieber cult. And no it isn’t because I just stumbled on those revealing photos of him in Bora Bora on the internet (but wow?!), or because he’s been dropping absolute bangers lately. It’s because I just recently watched the movie Never Say Never, that came out when he was just a wee nipper. The movie shows scenes of a pre egg-throwing Biebs being all cute and dorky, and also proves his evident musical talent. My best friend has been a die-hard Belieber since he sung that ghastly song with Luda (he drops the 'cris when he’s feeling particularly hood).

So much so, that she has a 10-year plan to get him to wed (and bed) her, and daily tags me in a new video/post of or about Justin in the hopes that one day I’ll understand the obsession. Well, I get it now. I get the fandom that surrounds ol’ JB, and I’ve begun to appreciate this aspect of celebrity culture.

When I got to really thinking about it, fandom exists everywhere in our society. The recent, and untimely, deaths of both Prince and David Bowie really brought this to light. And before people get up in arms about me comparing these two musical legends to Justin Bieber and start tagging me in those ‘God, take Justin and we’ll have Tupac back’ memes on Facebook, please know that I’m not comparing their music or legacy. I’m simply pointing out how much they all mean to their fans.

PAK ’N SAVE HEAD CHEF PUMPKIN SOUP INGREDIENTS 2kg Pumpkin – cubed 1 Onion – finely diced 1tbsp Ginger 3-4 Garlic cloves – finely chopped 3 Rosemary sprigs – finely chopped 1L Chicken or vegetable stock 300ml Cream Coriander Nutmeg Salt and pepper METHOD 1.

Pre-heat oven to 180°C and place cubed pumpkin on a roasting tray, lightly coated in oil, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Cook for about 20 minutes.

While pumpkin is cooking, lightly fry the onion with the ginger and rosemary until soft.

3.

In a large pot, add the stock, onion and ginger.

Once the pumpkin has softened and caramelised a little, add this to the pot as well.

Add cream, then use a blender to pulse the soup until it has a smooth consistency.

Serve hot with chopped coriander, pepper, a dash of cream and a side of bread.
