News NEXUS MAGAZINE

NEWS FEATURE Reports that data was collected on New Zealand citizens holidaying or residing in regions the government were spying on have been confirmed but not yet sufficiently addressed, despite the illegality of the actions. Reforms to the GCSB authorized greater intelligence-seeking measures for the agency, but it is still illegal to spy on a New Zealand citizen without a warrant, and claims that any information actually received were ‘discarded’ still contravene human rights. Meanwhile, some hard-liners naive hopes that the Prime Minister John Key would resign, based on a promise made last year that ‘I’ll resign if the GCSB conducts mass surveillance’, have been dashed as Key rescinded on his promise for the umpteenth occasion.

MASS SURVEILLANCE: HARD TO SPELL, HARDER TO STOMACH Philip McSweeney

After contacting the GCSB by typing ‘GCSB’ three times into a facebook-chat box, I was told that they had no official comment to make at this time. A spokesperson also asked ‘why you type anilingus into google so much jesus christ’, adding ‘I understand that Vanessa Carltons ‘One Thousand Miles’ is a catchy, hooky and poignant song about the all-too-human yearning for love and acceptance, but four hours in a row? Come on man. Pretty embarrassing.’ They also confirmed that they have seen your nudes, but remain pretty unimpressed to be honest. Meanwhile, Edward Snowden could not comment. ‘I’m sorry, I’d love to give you a quote’, he said, ‘but I’m much too busy at the moment — absolutely snowed in,

It emerged last week that New Zealand’s electronic surveillance agency, the

GCSB, has been monitoring New Zealand’s allies as well as their enemies. The voluminous list includes many of our Pacific Neighbours - Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia — as well as more obscure localities, which include Nauru and Kiribati (thank god someone is finally taking a stand against those infamous hives of espionage eh). The spy agency essentially intercepts communications from these countries, breaks them down into individualized packages and supplies the resulting data with the NSA and the ‘Five Eyes’ — a political intelligence — sharing alliance made up of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.

SIDE NOTE Are you bothered by the idea of mass surveillance in NZ? Vicky Jackson, Secondary Teaching Yeah, yeah. I think we’re entitled to our privacy. If you haven’t got anything to hide you shouldn’t be bothered but it’s still a massive invasion of privacy. I mean are we required to wear tin foil hats in New Zealand now?

situations that, you know, shouldn’t be happening.

This revelation, shared by whistle-blower Edward Snowden in conjunction with ‘The Intercept’ and investigative journalist Nicky Hager, is but the latest in a series of leaked information which calls into question the ethical credibility of the way in which information is taken and disseminated by the GCSB.

Phillip James Garrity, Theatre Quite a bit. It doesn’t seem necessary. And undermines our trust in government and shows they have no trust in us.

Documents leaked by Edward Snowden last year revealed that all the parties of this alliance were spying on each other. all for us anyway.

Reaction to the leak has been mixed. Defenders of the GCSB’s activities, among them Cam Slater and the National Party, claim that monitoring online behaviour and activity is a necessary precaution in the interest of the public; detractors, including The Greens, claim that the spying is an erosion of citizens privacy and civil rights, and that spying on Pacific neighbours represents an act of colonialism injurious to ongoing relations with the developing nations.

Anna James Tashkoff, Te Tohupaetahi I think that privacy is always an issue. The main thing I’m worried about is the way the government pushed it through. It felt underhanded. I worry about how it could be used.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE STUDENT VOICE? Ty Hart

Councils. On top of this, it also provides for a certain number of members of the Council to be dictated by the Minister of Education. So why should you give a fuck? Representation — whether it be in Parliament, or in a smaller context like in University — is important. If you aren’t represented, it’s likely that the big-thinkers and penpushers that run the world won’t be forced to give a crap about you, your dog, or what you think. At Waikato, representation obviously comes from Student Representatives who sit

roads. Whilst in the lower South Island, tourists have been the cause of more than 10% of injury crashes in the past five years. Though the national rate may not be incredibly high, the high number of crashes in the South Island is alarming. Figures such as Gerald Wong (National President of the New Zealand Chinese Association) and Greg Murphy have argued that car rental agencies should have to administer a learners-like simple test to ascertain whether or not the drivers hiring cars are capable of driving on New Zealand roads. On the other hand this is hardly the rental agency’s responsibility, is it…? Is it? Automobile Association spokesman, Mike Noon, and chief executive of the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand, Chris Roberts, certainly think so, claiming testing our annual 2.8 million visitors would be impractical. So what the fuck are we supposed to do? We could also try taking the laws into our own hands, by quite literally taking keys from poor tourist drivers and get the shit beaten out of us. Have you got any better ideas? But perhaps we shouldn’t be blaming the tourists? As of March this year, there have already been over 50 motoring deaths in New Zealand,

According to WSU President Shannon Stewart Student Representation on the board is paramount to a continued student voice. “Having a student member of council is the best way to ensure that student views are not only heard, but taken into consideration, at the highest levels of the University.” Up until 2011 the President of the Students’ Union automatically sat on the University Council as your voice. Then the government had the genius idea that it was no longer mandatory to join your Students’ Union and the $100 you were paying them for things like O-week, Advocacy, Clubs and Representation was scrapped. As a result they also removed the President’s automatic seat and replaced it with a low turnout election for a student representative. Incidentally that election has been won by the WSU rep every year except one. In fact, so low was the interest in the last one that it was just awarded to the WSU President because no other candidate existed. That doesn’t mean that the position hasn’t been important, “Over the years Student Members have fought to stop fee increases for both domestic and international students, prevented courses being discontinued, and had input into major projects such as the Student Centre and new Law and Management building to ensure they are student friendly,” said President Stewart. But now there is a real threat that Student representation will be axed completely.

NOT AN APOLOGY BUT NOT NOT AN APOLOGY TOO In issue two Nexus published a piece titled, ‘Social Media Outrage At Black Face.’ We stand by that piece and everything we said. The notion of cultural appropriation is abhorrent and dressing as other races for entertainment purposes is boring and ignorant. What we didn’t intend to do was make two students the poster children for the issue or racism in general on campus. It’s a good representation of the songs here. This album is harmless pop and is bound to have a large audience, though unlikely to trouble their primary auditory cortex.

I first experienced Thai food back in high school and it’s been a love affair ever since. I say love affair because it keeps me cheating on my diet and it’s sucking the money out of my wallet. Love sucks. But with all that aside, Thai Classic Cuisine is great. The food is amazing! It’s hot, filled with spicy zing, and they even do those carrot/cabbage art pieces that you couldn’t do no matter how many Pinterest lessons you look at. Panang Sizzling is by far the most incredible meal I have ever tasted. You’ll always know when it’s ready, because the waiters have to stand in the kitchen doorway for a minute until the steam reaches an acceptable level of this-won’t-burn-your-face-off. Les Mills is also just next-door. So if watching people in gym clothes walk past makes you feel guilty then you can always decline the extra rice. The food is just fine without it. The game uses achievement badges, titles, and pie graphs that map your wins and losses. The use of greys and pops of colour make it very aesthetically pleasing. If you play QuizUp for as long as I did, you will start getting the same questions over again. We’re a nation of visual illiterates but you don’t A recent Listener article alerted Joe Public to perhaps a little known fact that universities around the country house and display their own permanent art collections. What it also revealed was the somewhat startling observation that staff at these institutions of higher learning, exhibit a profound ignorance and even antipathy toward contemporary art. Now I know one can’t be an expert on everything, but one assumes and even expects from people with PhD’s after their name, a certain level of cultural sophistication, as well as a measure of awareness regarding the zeitgeist and at least some passing knowledge and appreciation of the modern. But nope. The revelation that a certain member of staff (name withheld) threatened to make a pin-board of a painting by one of New Zealand’s top artists if it wasn’t removed from the premises got me shaking my head. One reason for the explosion in the use of marijuana is that the old fears have been shown to be exaggerated. There is no evidence that marijuana is addictive, nor that it leads to crime, immorality, or stronger drugs. Other social dangers remain: a person high on “pot” and behind the wheel of a car is as potentially as dangerous as someone who has had “one too many”.

For a lot of adult learners, coming into or returning to tertiary study can be fucking terrifying. It’s often a long time since we were in a formal learning situation and the stakes are also often higher than for the average school leaver — debts carry more fear, and the hoped-for outcomes are more specific and more important. An adult coming back to tertiary study has usually seen the world and found themselves not quite prepared for their intended place in it, whereas school leavers tend to have fewer concerns about the massive amount of money they’re spending on their studies, and more vague hopes and dreams in their shiny little eyes. (Told you I was going to generalise). Student culture isn’t any one thing, but I guess you could describe it as a feeling of connection among the students of the institution in terms of values, activities, environment, interests and expectations (e.g. we value drinking, we like to do drinking, we go to places where we can drink, we are interested in drinking and we expect to get drunk). Oh yikes. Got a bit touchy-feely there didn’t I? Sorry. We are forced to carefully manage our time, so we can watch smugly while you young’uns scramble to finish and print your essays a few minutes before the deadline. that life is too hard to go on alone. Whilst I have clung onto the same job I’ve had since third form, a part-time income on minimum wage does not a well-nourished student make. By throwing away my dreams of youth community living, I have pleasured myself with new clothes, $$$savings, a nice car, and my regular Friday night hooker, Sebastian. Crazy House: Hillcrest I arrive at the massive two-storey house to find just one of the five flatmates home. Hamish, a young man with a hairy face and a kind smile, greets me around the back of the house by the paddling pool. I can see several electric guitars and four oversized longboards leaning against the wall be the stairway. Hamish explains how his flatmates share a lot of the same hobbies. Upstairs, I find a kitchen covered in day-old dishes, likely because “clean freak” Allan is away. A toilet plunger with a roll of 3-ply loo paper on its handle sits atop the dining room table. Surrounding the plunger are 5 beanies. By the fireplace, I find 90s romance novels, the leftovers from a recent book burning. Pushed into the dining room table is a chair with a toilet set attached to it. This is the quintessential kiwi flat. A hyperactive kitten with toothpick limbs mews and meows as it parades around its cardboard temple, a loving creation by Casey. The exceptional weirdness of this flat is strangely comforting. Each flatmate’s personality is free to run wild in the decor. This is a place where you won’t be judged — the flatmates are likely to be just as crazy as you are.

Steak Pie Zac Lyon

I’m sure everyone has played Where’s Wally before. If not, what did you do with your childhood? I play a similar game at the supermarket. Spot the Flatmates.

Method

It’s not hard, groups of 19–20 year olds fresh outta the Halls, walking slowly,

1. In a hot fry pan with a little oil, sear steak until golden brown on all sides —

perusing the isles. Bickering with what fragrance of toilet cleaner to get (take a stand where it counts and this is one of those times!) or disagreeing on which ply of toilet paper to get. Just on a side note; never go for the one ply paper — while it’s so much cheaper, nobody likes sanding their arse off, the comfort level is just not there. The biggest thing that sets flatmates apart from family shopping, is the choice of food. How the hell are you meant to feed yourselves properly?! Pre-cooked burger patties ain’t meat. Never fear, for I am here. Pie, pie, pie, steak and cheese, steak and cheese, I know — I’m a lyrical genius.

don’t overcook, nobody likes eating a rubbery shoe. 2. Remove steak and fry onion and garlic with rosemary and any other veges. 3. Add back in the steak, the stock, mushrooms and mix the cornflour with a small amount of water, then add all together. 4. Heat until it starts to thicken — add any seasoning. Yep this means you taste your creation before you feed it to your hunger stricken flatmates. 5. Grab a large pie dish. Anything that looks like it will cook a pie will work. Lightly grease that bad boy and layer down puff pastry. 6. Add in the filling — can add some cheese atop the filling before sealing it with another piece of pastry. Brush over beaten egg yolk.

Ingredients 1 packet of puff pastry 500-1000 g of steak in 3 cm pieces (chuck, blade and rump steak are fine) 300 g of mushrooms

7. Whack the pie into a preheated oven at 180C for 30 mins or until the pastry has puffed and is browned. 8. It’s going to be verging on nuclear. Let it cool before eating. Whilst it

Innovation and Employment, so they can’t spend it down at the pub on a Friday night. If this form is not filled out, it will be a lot harder for you to get your bond back when your tenancy is over. Make a flat account. It’s not fun when you pay the power bill and then spend a whole month hassling your flatmates to pay you for their share, only to do it all again the next month. Different arrangements work for different flats, but we highly recommend sorting out how you’re going to pay for things early on and making sure that it works. Post Tenancy Complete the final inspection with your landlord. When it’s time to move out go around the property with your landlord. This gives you a chance to discuss any problems that they pick up on and will result in less chance of a bond dispute, leaving both parties satisfied. Be ready to move out at least one day prior to the end of your lease. Everyone, and I mean everyone, underestimates the amount of packing and cleaning that needs to be done before moving out. If you aim to get it done a day or two earlier than necessary, you won’t be engaging in frantic window washing and carpet cleaning at 8pm on your last night. Get final bills for all of your amenities. Power, internet, sky tv (for you fancy ones) — anything that you’re going to get a bill for should be all paid up to date. With flatmates going separate ways into new flats or even to new cities it gets messy when you’ve all moved out and are still getting bills. Make arrangements!

governance removing mandatory student representation and reducing council sizes from 16–24 members to 8–12. I’m not going to be drawn in to a discussion about whether these changes, as a whole, are positive or negative. The simple reality is that the changes have happened and we now need to respond to them.

Solution? We have a limited number of these beaut little cards that reward you with a dollars worth of loyalty points for every ten dollars you spend at Lawrenson group venues. Show your support for your Students’ Union by picking one up and flashing it each time you buy a Jagerbomb, QF, cider, or food — if that’s what you’re into spending your money on.

The most important thing for the Student Body to be aware of is that while student representation is no longer mandatory, it is still possible. Here at the University of Waikato we need students, the University’s customers, to stand up and demand a seat at the table. We need to let the University know that we see value in having a Student Member of Council and make it clear that we expect to see the position retained. If we can achieve this it would be fair to say that these changes may have increased student representation, proportionally speaking, making our voice even stronger. If the seat of student representation on the University Council is retained, the next question we face will be how to fill this position. Historically this position has been held ex-officio by the Waikato Students’ Union President, however, recent changes have meant that the WSU President no longer holds this position as of right and must contest a second election. I personally believe the WSU President is the best person to take on this responsibility and should hold any Council seat ex-officio, but accept that not all students may share this view. My reasoning is simple. I believe that the WSU President, democratically elected by the wider student body, has their finger on the pulse of student culture. They are in a unique position that see’s them supported by a diverse Board of 10 elected student representatives and they have access to the tools, equipment, and communications channels (like Nexus) to effectively communicate issues to the student body at large. When you combine this with a constitution that binds them to act in the best interest of the student body, as opposed to what is in the best interest of an individual. I also believe that it is important to have an academic member of staff on our University Council. I feel this will protect academic freedom and maintain high standards.
