GET FUCKED… BUT ACTUALLY. Certainly I can’t be the only one that got glock glock 3000’d into the groundbreaking TV show that is How to Build a Sex Room on Netflix. The title is kind of a dead giveaway, and I think that you’re definitely missing out if you’re not watching the sweetest kuia, Melanie Rose, as she whips out shiny butt plugs and the odd sounding rod in an attempt to gauge the clients reaction to sexual gratitude. It’s a fucking hoot, but there’s a bigger kōrero at play here as the stigma of sex starts to unravel, having the clients express their inner desires to a woman they’d just met. But more importantly though, to the one they share their life with.

Am I looking too deep into a show about enhancing sex lives through spanking benches and hard points mounted to a table with an ass imprint? Fuck knows, but it’s got me thinking about sex and intimacy and what that really means as an early 20’s kid trying to get a grip on who he is in the world of rubbing fronts and experiencing the wonders of a body that isn’t my own. That’s not to say I’m turned on by my own body. Shit, now you’re all probably thinking that I’m some crazed lunatic with a self-obsessed view of myself.

Fuck.

For those of you who have amazing recall, I came out as straight a few issues ago for pride. Was that appropriate?

Yes, because me understanding, or rather attempting to understand, my sexuality is all a part of that queer experience.

With sexuality and confusion comes experimentation. For most, it’s hard to open up in a sexual situation with all those

inherant fears of judgement and whether you’re going to be good enough in the sack to warrant a second meeting.

Whether you’re going to measure up to their ex, their expectations, or their wildest fantasies. Though why worry about the unknown or could’ve beensm when you could just fuck around and see what sticks. Can you tell I love an innuendo?

Melanie Rose, while a fantastic designer, works as an informal sex therapist. One of the things I find the most interesting is how open a couple becomes strictly from talking about their sex habits or kinks. I find it beautiful in some weird, probably voyeuristic way to look into the lives of someone through their more hidden attributes. As a human, you’re intrigued by the unknown, a sick perversion to understand everything about someone you don’t really know, and that’s honestly one of the more interesting things about the psyche and the inner workings of a human brain.

It’s kind of poetic if you think about it for long enough.

Somehow, I turned a pretty simple premise of a show into a well-rounded argument for sex without pressure. Never will I claim to be an expert on sex, so understand that firstly, but I am experienced enough to understand that it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Don’t fuck, or do – it’s your choice to make. It wouldn’t be a Hoata editorial without some kind of life lesson, I'm just THAT complex team ;)

Voting for our Hamilton City Council electorates doesn’t open until September 16 this year, but that won’t stop signage from being erected, debates at the old folks’ centre being had, and some poor comms employee at Council copying and pasting this news piece from one email to another and wondering how this is their life now. Nominations to run for Council are open until August 12, and anyone can run - provided you have the $200 application fee, are ready to serve the interests of the business elite, and are willing to whinge about Three Waters to anyone that will listen. Stuff reports that our Mayor and queen Paula Southgate has already had some of her signage taken to with a craft knife, which is both rather unkind and weirdly aggressive. Only 39% of Hamiltonians actually voted in the local body elections in 2019, which just goes to show that if we all rallied together and voted for people that better serve the interests of young people in the Waikato, we could completely change the face of the Council - but we still won’t, though. We’ve got enough of our own shit to worry about.

You’ve probably noticed, but the weather is more fucked than usual this winter around the world.

Due to the ongoing effects of climate change, weather events are becoming more extreme on both sides of the bell curve. Here in Aotearoa, flooding has caused extensive damage to the South Island over the last few weeks, with RNZ reporting that parts of Otago and Canterbury were cut off after a storm ripped through roads and ‘sliced a bridge in half.’ Stuff also reports that residents of Lake Ōhau village were stranded after the only bridge to the area was washed away. Wind speeds of almost 200kph forced many flights across the country to be cancelled, which is probably a good thing because it doesn’t look like the rest of the world is faring that much better than we are. Waves reaching up to five metres high flooded homes and businesses in the Cook Islands, ‘American’ Samoa and ‘French’ Polynesia, and in Britain, residents are only just now discovering what air conditioning is as a massive heat wave revealed weaknesses in the country’s infrastructure, which was never designed to handle much of anything at all (kind of like British people in general). While changing your personal habits when it comes to pollution and plastic waste may save your soul, 71% of global emissions come from just 100 companies worldwide. Aren’t fossil fuels the best?

Small Town Short News Jared Ipsen

A dog has dug up a mysterious box containing cyanide in Matamata.

A small ammunition box was unearthed by the canine at a property on Maungakawa Road, containing small vials of the toxic chemical compound, which even in small doses can cause death within minutes. No one seems to really know what to do about this discovery, with NZ Police telling the NZ Herald that ‘as far as [we] can tell, the box remains in the spot where it was dug up from.’ Nexus understands that the plan from here on out is to send someone in with a very large stick, and poke the box at a distance to ‘see what happens.’

Thanks to conservation efforts, Aotearoa’s population of Kākāpō is the highest its been in half a century.

For those unfamiliar with the critically endangered bird, Kākāpō are a strange green flightless parrot that only come out at night, and can live up to 100 years. Thanks to our incredibly great idea of introducing environmental terrorists to New Zealand like cats, rats and possums, the species faced complete annihilation, but thanks to efforts from a recovery programme, the birds’ population has reached 216, the highest since the 1970s. 60 chicks were hatched over the course of the breeding season, set to be relocated to various pest-free sanctuaries across New Zealand.

Port Waikato continues to sink in to the ocean after another metre of sand was washed away.

After last month’s storm which left three houses ‘uninhabitable,’ continued extreme weather saw swelling tides further erode beachside banks and tourist spots. The next ‘king tide’ (especially high tide) is due in mid-August, with Sunset Beach’s surf life-saving club president Malcolm Beattie telling Stuff that ‘it could be a disaster.’

It’s a unique brand of frustration leaving your towel in the car and having to stomp backwards 20 metres to retrieve it. Using cardio equipment often requires a background in advanced engineering with the amount of NASA inspired buttons. And then there’s the weights room overflowing with strangers, depositing samples of butt sweat on every square inch of real estate. By the time you’re actually ready to workout your 4pm lasagne from Bongo steps in for 3 sets of 10 farts.

But the gym can be incredible. A chance to switch off your brain following lectures that tear at the very fabric of space and time the way they warp minutes into hours. Bypassing TikTok dopamine for a less tainted runner’s high is the cleanest trip this side of coffee. Not to mention the sense of achievement from changing your body with imagination and

effort, all so you can stare at your shoulders in dim lighting for 20 minutes too long.

And then there’s music. Your experience enhancing drug in the gymnasium. The key to unlocking your true potential and your fully realised alter ego.

The Day I Tried to Live The following column may trigger memories of suicide or depression while in crisis. Whatever service you use, have their number handy, or if in any doubt, call 111 because it is an emergency and you’re not wasting anyone’s time if you do.

Don’t read this one Mum. I have to say that because even though I’m 42 years old, my Mum reads all my stuff, tells me how cool I am, and the thought of her crying upsets me a great deal and makes me cry too. This is about the time I tried to kill myself. I’ve alluded to it before, so let’s go there. This is for all the people who have tried or thought about trying. Well done on still being here. Whatever happened, you’re still here and while I’m not a big believer in destiny, the fact that you’re still here means something, and is something to be proud of.

I was 17, living in a hostel in the middle of Auckland. I had a colostomy bag that would hold a litre of fluid that consistently filled up and was out of control. I should not have gone back to Auckland after having the colostomy surgery done, it was too soon, but I was stubborn. The bag would unclip and spill publicly, I tried to talk to people about it but they were grossed out, there was a stain on my room's carpet floor where the bag had burst – a constant reminder that I was flawed and disgusting. After my trauma I didn’t feel like I fit in. A pretty standard teenager emotion, but cranked up to extremes thanks to the fact that I was significantly different from everyone on my floor.

I was always exhausted and in pain by 9pm. Sadly, it appeared as though this is when the hostel floor I was on woke up.

Parties, sounds of people having a good time, loud music.

I couldn’t sleep, and I was also constantly reminded of how I didn’t fit in and how hard it was to socialise for me, given my anxiety and health issues. I had been prescribed Prozac, but I had not seen any improvements despite being on it in a while, given how short my gut was, I don't even know if I was absorbing any of it. I had sleeping pills but my brain still didn’t seem to want to shut up.

So I decided to shut it up. After a couple of hours of intense misery, an accumulation of all the shitty feelings I felt, I swallowed all the sleeping pills and Prozac I had left, and chugged it down with vodka. There was a brief moment of ‘shit what have I done?’, but that quickly passed as I lay on the floor peacefully listening to music. I woke up. It was roughly the same time of day but a bit under 24hrs later. While I had swallowed quite a few pills, the only thing I could think of was that it still wasn’t enough to kill me. I just felt really groggy, tired, hungover, and ashamed that it didn’t work.

Now this is the bit where I say that there’s nothing to be ashamed about, it’s good that I didn’t fail, look at the cool things that have happened….blah blah blah. That is true. But the reason I’m writing one of the lowest points of my life is to again say to people, you’re not alone. Am I “fixed” after all this? No. No-one can be really. This is just part of my life experience, a tragic and sad part, a part that I wished hadn’t happened but it did.

So if you’re reading this and you have some of those thoughts, you’re not alone, please reach out to whoever you feel comfortable with.

Fear & Loathing A retrospective look into Roe V. Wade in Aotearoa On the 24th June 2022, the American Supreme Court voted 6-3 in favor of Dobbs, in Dobbs V. Jackson, and held the opinion that abortion is not a constitutional right. This single act not only undid years of social and legal precedent including Roe V. Wade, but has a resounding and meaningful impact on a woman’s right to choose and their body autonomy across the globe.

Regardless of your personal feelings on the issue, there seemingly exists an atmosphere of confusion or paranoia because nobody knows what the future might hold. While the inner workings of the American legal system and Supreme Court seem worlds away from the shaky isles of Aotearoa, the reality may be that we’re a little closer than it seems. Newly minted National Leader Chris Luxon is a confirmed evangelical Christian with a storied history, and is publically on record as being anti-abortion. Prompted by the landmark ruling in America, Luxon stated once again that under his leadership, a National-led government would not relitegate the abortion reform, however this is of no comfort as women watched as 3 Supreme Court justices also stated they wouldn’t relitegate a women’s right to choose… and look where we are now.

Initially we could’ve had a few opinion pieces with our writers stating their opinions and thoughts on the current climate, but we at Nexus thought “fuck it” and we decided to speak with a few experts to discuss what the future could hold for wāhine throughout Aotearoa. News reporter Chloe Smith was sent along to speak with University lecturers Sue Wardill, Al Gillespie, and Claire Breen to kōrero about what that can mean for the US and whether there’s a greater effect on Aotearoa.

What is the likely fallout of the Roe v Wade precedent being challenged?

What are the next likely outcomes, can Biden do anything with an executive order or is it all hopeless?

Gillespie: In America - the thing with Roe v Wade is that it is a decision by the Supreme Court and anything that the Supreme Court says ultimately, and any legal decision, can be challenged by subsequent debate in time to come. And so, if it is just a court ruling, it is not necessarily there in perpetuity.

The only way you can get something in perpetuity that can’t be challenged by the court is if it is made into legislation. And that is the mistake that the Americans made. They shouldn’t have assumed that their right, because it was guaranteed by the court, would always be there. Because the court in itself is a political body, and all you had to do was change the makeup of the court.

Breen: One thing that does come out of Roe v Wade… the question of why run with the right to privacy - why isn’t there more of an argument based on women’s own health and reproductive rights. Coming from the human rights and women’s rights perspective, everyone has the right to health, and women have the right to health, and part of that is sexual and reproductive health. Part of that goes to the ability of women to make these decisions for themselves.

Breen: It’s a reminder that laws do change, and that if we are keen and conscious to protect the rights of women to access health care, you should be careful not to take anything for granted.

Conventional wisdom is that Democrats aren’t motivated in midterm elections, and it was anticipated that there was going to be a Red Wave year. Can a single issue like abortion access actually change that?

Gillespie: The problem with American politics is that it is so divided that sometimes the Americans can actually work together and achieve progress. And so even though you think something is not possible for advancement, you will get a catalytic issue that will change it - and the most recent example is gun reform.

And so you had no progress for 30 years, and all of a sudden you will get one particular atrocity and it will trigger change. In times to come, it may trigger change - whether the Democrats (and I don’t see it as a purely Democrat / Republican topic either, I see it as something bigger than that) determine it to be an issue that demands an election is another question as I don’t think that it will be for the midterms.

I think right now, most Americans will be concerned about the Roe V. Wade decision, but also other debates about the economy, Ukraine, and gun rights. There are a lot of other things going on right now and this is just part of that mix.

Gillespie: It’s not hopeless- I think the next likely outcomes will develop around debates, technology, and other forms of fertility control, and then the issue will be how much the state will try to control those. Because it’s focusing on a very particular type of intervention but I think the technology will change and then the debate will be whether the government tries to then prohibit women from getting access to other types of fertility control.

To me, the lesson of Roe v Wade is don’t take anything for granted, you’ve got to protect your rights and this is just one right that has been eroded- there could well be others.

What do you think it will mean in Aotearoa-New Zealand?

Gillespie: I don’t think in New Zealand it is going to have a huge effect…because we have done that balancing here too, and we don’t have the same polarising view or community that America does.

Wardill: Abortion law will never be a simple issue. It is always going to be hotly debated because someone’s opinion is always going to depend on their view of the world - and probably more fundamental than that, when they believe that life begins.

We have for decades now been moving to a more liberal understanding of abortion law, with the last change happening last term with abortion [being removed[ from the Crimes Act, what will it take to relitigate that?

Gillespie: Removal from the Crimes Act is fundamental -

[abortion] will not get put back into the Crimes Act. What we are seeing is an increasing progression to a more advanced system that recognizes women’s rights to control their own fertility.

We have been assured by Christopher Luxon that we won’t see a repeal of the existing abortion laws in New Zealand, but Shane Reti has discussed taking the issue of restrictions on abortions to caucus - which we know has many politicians who voted against the 2020 Abortion legislation being passed. How assured should New Zealanders feel that this is the end of a discussion?

Gillespie: The discussion never ends and you should never take your eye off the ball - if you do, things could change when you are distracted. People need to be vigilant in the protection of their rights and their liberties.

What lessons can we learn about the safeguards we take for granted in New Zealand?

Breen: It’s a decision that we all need to take notice of. On the one hand, this decision was handed down in the US and impacts American women, but I’m watching for the wider ripple effect because it does send a message to people in America but more widely that things can change. I think the decision really forces a lot of people to consider or reconsider women’s rights in this space.

Gillespie: For New Zealanders living in America, depending on what state they are in… but for New Zealanders here I think the impact is benign, [I’m] aware that there are significant changes in the world right now and that people shouldn’t just assume that things that are disagreeable won’t happen at home. Unless something is deeply entrenched, nothing is certain. In New Zealand the law is fragile at the best of timeswe don’t even have a written constitution and so all of the things we consider to be sacrosanct and rights are often vulnerable. I think that New Zealand needs not just a Bill of Rights, but something that is enshrined so future generations cannot revoke it. This is not the time for silence. This is a time for education and advocacy.

We went into this with the best of intentions, hoping that one of our excellent professors would provide the reassurance that ‘nothing like that can happen here.’

Instead we were left with a ‘don’t trust anyone, don’t think it can’t all change in a day, don’t take shit for granted’ vibe. And if that is providing any of you with some serious concerns, a sense of anxiety, and feeling that you aren’t in control of your own life, we get it. 16 states enacted trigger laws the day the Supreme Court verdict was released, and those capable of carrying a baby woke up to the realisation that depending on the state they were born, they could be forced to carry a life to term or be prosecuted for driving to a different state to make a choice about their own body.

This is a compex issue, with people everywhere feeling that is kinda fucked up and it doesn’t look like it is getting better anytime soon, so let’s make sure we never take the hard fought freedoms and liberties we enjoy here for granted, because one day it could be us.

passed, limiting abortion services to licensed hospitals. AMAC was forced to close.

1976- Reporting of abortion becomes obligatory.

The Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act passed - s10 stated that qualified health practitioners could authorize and administer an abortion for women under 20 weeks pregnant (4 months) - s11 stated that abortion for women pregnant over 20 weeks could only be authorized if physical, mental, and overall wellbeing was regarded alongside one other medical practitioner signing off.

Overall this made abortions less accessible - Health boards were also required to fund lawful abortions

1977-

SOS/ Sisters Overseas service was established, helping women travel to Australia for abortions (1978-1979).

1978/1980- Auckland and Wellington hospital

boards establish their own abortion clinics and AMAC reopens.

2001-

August- Mifegyne (mifepristone) was approved by the Minister of Health (Dame Annette King), and gazetted for use in medical abortions.

2019- 5th August- MOJ/ minister of justice, Andrew Little, introduces the Abortion Legislation Bill to parliament.

2020- 23rd March- Royal assent is given, and the Abortion Legislation Act becomes law the following day.

Girlfriend - isms There’s one thing I’ve never liked about any boyfriend I’ve had: his friends. I have never walked into meeting-the-friends situations with excitement, and I have always been correct in feeling that way. Almost every interaction I’ve had with a boyfriend’s friend-group has been this: sitting in the corner, with no other girls to talk to, and hating every attempt at conversation that is thrust in my direction. Biting my nails, hinting that I want to leave–just having an awful time all together.

It’s not mutual friends I have this problem with. The mutual friends of a heterosexual couple tend to be a healthy mix of genders. It’s the separate, all-male friend group that I have never had a good experience with. The number one problem is that they always seem to think I am fully open and willing to answer any and all questions about my sex life with their buddy. They seem to think that because they’re friends with my boyfriend, they are allowed to say whatever they want to me. In their mind, I am an extension of their friend, which means they can make all the hilarious sexual jokes and comments about me that they like.

I call this girlfriend-ism. I’ve been dealing with it ever since I started dating guys. In high school, for example, my ex snapchatted a picture of me to his friend. His friend called me a thot. For no reason. Another time, my ex called me over to say hi to his friends on a video call. They joked that I was his “cum sock”. Another time, I was asked by one of my ex’s friends, what was the freakiest thing me and my ex had ever done? In all these examples, I’d known the friends for one hour maximum.

In high school, I would usually turn the other cheek. Sure, these guys were losers, but they were teenagers. They’d grow out of it, right? Wrong. This year, a 30 year old (that I’d never spoken to before) asked me if his friend (my boyfriend) “hit all of my spots” during sex. Because I left “turning the other cheek” in high school, I informed him that it was a fucking inappropriate thing to say to me. It still left me feeling rotten.

Because what the fuck, right? What gave him the audacity to say something like that to me? He could have asked me what I study at uni. Or if he wanted to ask about our relationship, he could have asked how long we’d been dating, which he actually ended up doing later anyway. I don’t know what causes this behaviour, maybe there’s something about an all-male group of guys that causes some kind of misogynistic herd mentality.

Of course, there are some positive experiences–the guys who actually treat you like a human instead of just their friends “missus”. But the bad has outweighed the good for me. I’m tired of girlfriend-ism. So lads, please–next time you meet your friend’s girl, just ask her about her fucking weekend.

Okay, slight warning, this week’s column is going to be a rant. I promise you, we will return to scheduled programming following this week’s issue, but I have a bone to pick, and everyone has a lesson that they can learn from the recent shitty experiences of not only myself, but my friends.

What is the obsession with our disabilities and intimate details? Why do individuals think that asking questions about how we use the bathroom, or how bedroom activities (trying to censor myself here) and other equally private questions is appropriate? Why in the fuck would we share this information?

What do you get out of knowing these answers other than satisfying some sick or weird curiosity if these questions don’t directly relate to you?

Our disabilities can be deeply personal in the ways that they impact us and our lives. The ways that they affect us can leave us feeling ashamed and can be challenging to deal with. Although we try to accept them in their entirety, they can make us feel incredibly uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Whether through sensory issues, or through hypermobility, or issues with other aspects, we can feel a huge lack of control. Sometimes, the only control we feel we have is over who knows what in regards to our disabilities. And individuals trying to pressure us for deeply, deeply intimate answers around our disabilities can feel incredibly violating. It’s honestly the last thing we need to be dealing with in our lives.

For me, I have spent the past several months dealing with constant questions around how sex will work with a missing limb once my leg is amputated. How

sex currently works when my joints dislocate and I am hypermobile. How pain affects my digestive system if at all, and how other comorbidities affect my digestive and nervous systems.

And most of my friends recently have dealt with incredibly invasive questions about their health, their treatments, and have been asked for similarly intimate information. And NOBODY is entitled to know about these pieces of information or these experiences. No matter how close to us they may be. No matter who they are to us, doctors included.

Just because I can be open about information does not mean that you need to know it all. To be quite frank, are you the one joining me in the bedroom? Are you the one who is helping to take me to appointments around my digestive system? About my comorbidities? No? Then, with all disrespect, FUCK OFF. You don’t need to know the answers to any of those questions. And I will say the same to anyone who tries to pressure anyone I know for similar information.

Do you want to help us? If you catch someone asking stupid or invasive questions, then call them out. I don’t care if it doesn’t “seem cool”, it'll stop you and your friends from receiving a massive slap to the face. Or a shoe to the chest.

We may be disabled. But we are still human. We still can defend ourselves.

We can still bite back. And we still have a right to fucking human decency and privacy.

Have you ever thought about what Te Reo Māori was like before Te tiriti o Waitangi? For many, the Reo was their own, a waiata that told the story of their Iwi, Hapū, Whānau and particularly their Tīpuna. But, they also sounded very different from other Māori from across Aotearoa. For example; Māori in Te Waipounamu spoke differently to all Māori in Te Ika a Māui. But even Māori within Te Ika a Māui have different forms of Reo, each with a beautiful wairua surrounding it. But of course, our darling friends from the United Kingdom had to come and have a slice of the pie, or in their eyes, the whole damn pie.

When our friends came and made their mark here in Aotearoa, they made it their personal goal to eradicate Māori by assimilating our people into the Pākehā world. This sadly included Te Reo Māori. In many ways, they succeeded in wiping the Language out of multiple generations of Māori from the 1890’s right through to the 1950’s and 60’s, however, they did not succeed in wiping the language into extinction. Our Reo survived, and from the 1980’s, it began to rise and has become an everyday language most people recognise. To be blunt, there is a large minority that despise Te Reo Māori, and to them I say, Go Take A Run and Jump.

But the sad reality is the colonisers still have a strong influence on our Reo. There are cases where our own people have cursed and abused their own people for speaking in their tīpuna’s Reo and with the meta of our Iwi and Hapū. This is the sad reality of how colonisation has influenced the rise of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori since the 1980’s.

I myself use Kāi Tahu meta, where we replace all ng’s with k’s. I am proud to speak the Reo my tīpuna spoke, but I must be honest, the fact that I get told to speak Te Reo properly on my own whenua is disgusting and downright shit. I wonder how people from Taranaki would feel if someone from Kāi Tahu were to step foot on their whenua and demand Mana Whenua to speak the normalised Te Reo Māori. I could guarantee you that there would be someone being told to never step foot on that whenua ever again. In the eyes of Pākehā and Te Kawakataka, Te Reo Māori is one singular language, and Māori are one people. They Are Wrong! Each of our Iwi, each of our Hapū have a different way of doing things. Our Tikaka is different, our Reo is different, our people are different.

But, we all share a common goal. We want to be Māori! We want to speak Te Reo Māori, and we want to speak it in the meta of our Tīpuna.

We are in a new era, an era where Te Reo Māori is rising higher and higher and my generation's tamariki and mokopuna will be given the opportunity to learn Te Reo Māori from the start of their schooling at 5 years old. But how are we as Māori going to ensure that our meta, the Reo that our tīpuna spoke before Te Tiriti o Waitangi, survives and begins to thrive as well? It starts with us.

So, to our beautiful Pākehā colonisers of the old days, nice try, but you failed to eradicate us. In your ditched attempt to destroy us, you took away our language, our mana, and our aroha, but you never took away our Māoritaka. I thank our Tīpuna for their sacrifice, and wish that they could see Te Reo Māori thrive as it is now. And I say to our future generations, kia kaha! It starts with you! No matter where in Aotearoa you are from, ensure that the meta your tīpuna once spoke comes back and rises as Māori have done so over the past 40 years.

Love & Scarves Tehana De Klerk I don’t have a favourite colour. At least, not anymore. I don’t āind joy in the burning orange of the morning sun, nor do the seas’ blues paint my mind with tranquillity. I suppose the forest green is pretty, but the eyes of its beholder have shattered the euphoria I once felt in its presence. The sweetness of strawberry red, a once vibrant reminder of love, passion, and devotion, now rots in the fabric that lay in the grey solitude of a bedroom wardrobe. Oh how I wish I could feel its warmth again. But how can I, when the one who had gifted it to me has left me more empty than before?

The war is over now, and they say that we can go home. But the world seems pale as they tell us that we are their heroes.

They sing and dance to the swell tunes of golden victory, preaching to me that despite great loss, we have won the war. What do they know of loss? Are they just laughing at me? I am no hero. I’m just a person stuck in the suffocating black tar of misery, yearning for your touch.

Sometimes I hear your voice. Not that of the stoic, colourless attitude you had adopted in the end, but rather the divine tones that you held in our youth. I always compared it to a sunālower’s yellow; so beautiful and engaging, soothing and

refreshing. Where did all the time go? We were so young, so naive to the great truths of this life. I just hope you know that I don’t blame you for venturing off on your own. Although, I wish I could have said goodbye.

The day you left us still plagues my mind. I can’t help but wonder if it was us that let you down. Perhaps, if we- no, if I had said something, this life wouldn’t be so cruel. And perhaps I owed that to you. Would you still have left, if I had begged you to stay? Or had everything about this future already been decided? Maybe you were always meant to be this person. At least, that’s what our friends tell me, but I refuse to believe that.

You were no monster. You were the boy who saved me when we were children, who held my hand in the dark of the night, and who turned against the world who had shown him with nothing but pain. You were the boy who fought for his people, who laughed in the face of despair, and who only ever wanted to protect his friends.

You were the boy who promised to always wrap your sweet red scarf around me.

Violating Community Guidelines Podcast | Jak Rāta

If you’re like me, then you’re probably chronically online, constantly consuming media and making yourself hyperaware of everything going on around you and also throughout the world. But social media comes at a cost, the cost of morals and understanding what you can and what you can’t post to a public feed, violating community guidelines. Now that I’ve drawn you in on a false premise of some kind of deep dive into the business of social media, here’s a podcast that’s basically just a couple of girls shitposting but make it audio.

The social media goddesses that are Brittany Broski and Sarah Schauer come together for an hour a week to celebrate and discuss the niche corners of the online cyberspace in an attempt to shine some light on some of the less known communities that make up the world wide web. You’re probably thinking, “wait, I know those names don’t I?” and chances are you’re either a 19 year old with TikTok or you’re a 25-27 year old that came through the short-form app that was Vine. Both Broski and Schauer are children on the internet, and that’s what allows them to be able to express opinions and thoughts on what it means to be a content creator but also a general consumer of online content and media.

You’ve got the premise, the structure is even more simple.

Here’s a topic, now talk. I’ve always thought of myself as someone not the most conscious of social media, or just a light consumer of content, but here I am able to relate each week on topics thought to be underground or just simply too taboo to discuss. From the kōrero of furries to just the general discussions behind 4chan, there’s a bit of everything there to

82% appease even the most difficult to please. There've been a few episodes that I’ve found myself listening to again, with the likes of Thirst Traps, Horny on Main and Deep Fakes striking a chord as someone with an understanding of just the most general internet terms. Rewatchability is an important note, their comedy being so free-flowing and easily digestible.

One of the problems I have with the podcast is just that it isn’t the most universal in terms of watchability, but I guess that plays into the point of the show. The fact that not all content is suited for everyone but that there’s something for anyone online – all you need to do is search. One thing is, if you do look it up, they have a 4.8 -5.0 on most platforms but there’s always going to be a bias with such huge online followings preceding them, so form your own opinions and pass judgments bias free. It’s mindless content, so you don’t have to think too hard on the topics. They don’t take themselves too seriously and that’s honestly what I love most about them.

The general dynamic is just easy vibes and I appreciate the overall ability of the cohosts to just make the show run like clockwork, no awkward moments and no dead air. I think that a lot of the positive elements of the show come from the no-holds-bar comedy and off-kilter energetic comments. Do yourself a favour and just fucking listen too it.

Just give it a watch if you don’t want to take life too seriously or you’re okay with just some silly banter and cheap laughs, there’s nothing all that serious here my bros. x

Have you ever thought to yourself “I'm so stoned I will laugh at anything”?

Then allow me to introduce Disney+’s Zombies III, the exception to every rule. If you haven’t seen the magnum opus Zombies, or its world building follow-up Zombies II then allow me to give a quick recap. Zombies I is like a play you wrote in year 4 loosely based on something someone had told you about Romeo and Juliet. Zombies 2 thought fuck it, lets run that back but add werewolves because... Twilight? Zombies III picks up on the cliffhanger of the sequel where the white haired girl whose name I already forgot sees a spaceship. Her Boyfriend, the imaginatively named Zombie Zed, looking like the douchiest cousin of the Jonas brothers wearing kids face paint, joins her for fun and musical hijinx. But will these star crossed lovers survive a new Alien threat? Of course they will it is a fucking disney movie. Can I say, unequivocally, that no one will enjoy this movie? Of course not. For every bad disney movie there is some 2nd year underemployed marketing major just waiting for a zombie werewolf, alien film. Christ there were three Expendables films so what the hell do I know. If you have yet to see this lowpoint in cinematic history congratulations on not having kids, but for those who suffered through it just know I feel your pain brothers and sisters.

Oh and I have 30 or so words left so the big twist that was obvious at the start is that the white-haired ham acting Juliet, IS AN ALIEN, yeah twist.

The only entertainment value this holds is to find out which background actor becomes a big star and removes any trace of this from their IMDB in five years. Honestly I’d rather be eaten by zombies than watch a 4th in the series.

Tiny Pretty Things TV show | Caitlin Walters-Freke

I was at home one day and wanted to watch the movie Black Swan.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t available on Netflix. Instead, Netflix recommended this show called Tiny Pretty Things. Sure, it’s not exactly what I wanted to watch. But it was about ballet, which is what I wanted, so may as well try it.

Based on the young adult book of the same name, Tiny Pretty Things follows the students and staff at the Archer School of Ballet after one of their classmates accidently “falls” off a roof. Her replacement, Neveah, enters a world of lies, sex and betrayal.

First off, major content warning. There are lots of graphic sex scenes in this show which I found kind of off-putting. Outside of that, the show’s fine.

The mystery of what happened to Cassie is interesting and the dances are well choreographed. However, the major problem with this show is that the characters are all quite one note. The students all want to be the best dancer in the world and every character has a scandalous secret which you learn about almost straight away. There’s no subtlety. There was also the issue of the sheer number of characters, there were too many, so it was hard to care about all of them.

Ultimately, I’m still going to try and find Black Swan, but I don’t regret watching this show. I’m curious to know if the book is better.
