ADAPTING AT SCALE: RECALVI PARTS

AND THE FUTURE OF THE INDEPENDENT AFTERMARKET

Recalvi Parts is the largest and fastest-growing distributor in the Iberian market, with 128 warehouses (of which 88 are company-owned) across Spain and Portugal.

We have efficient logistics, extensive storage capacity and a strong service vocation toward workshops and other distributors, ensuring a high availability of stock.

In addition, Recalvi Parts operates a proprietary network of more than 800 workshops offering a package of services tailored to demanding current needs.

For the 2026 fiscal year we project an estimated turnover of €300M.

We have recently joined NEXUS; we are proud of its identity and attracted by its growth and projection. And support from its excellent executive and management team will secure a bright future.

Aftermarket outlook

In the short and medium term, demand for spare parts for internal-combustion vehicles will remain relatively stable, although we are seeing a slowdown in traditional consumables (oil, filters).

International conflicts have driven up petroleum-related costs and affected mar-

itime, land and air transport, increasing price volatility and pressure on the supply chain. Supplier negotiation and logistical efficiency will be critical.

The ageing vehicle fleet and limited public incentives for renewal mean we can still expect good years in these categories.

In the longer term, electrification will reduce part of the preventive-maintenance business. But, it will open opportunities in electrical components, power electronics and services related to batteries and software.

Hybrid vehicles will help maintain balance for now, as they are the most chosen option among new car buyers.

The adoption of AI and connected diagnostics will drive predictive maintenance and data-driven inventory management; those who integrate data and logistics will turn the transition into a competitive advantage, although initially this will primarily benefit the OEM model.

NEXUS community expectations

Recalvi Parts expects the NEXUS community to provide enhanced access to suppliers and preferential commercial terms, enabling us to improve margins and strengthen our competitiveness in the market.

We also see strong value in bonus agreements and commercial synergies that help optimise total acquisition costs across the value chain. Beyond commercial benefits, access to high-quality market information and analysis will be key to supporting more informed purchasing decisions and more reliable stock forecasting. We expect shared data platforms to play a central role in reducing stockouts and improving planning efficiency across the network.

Recalvi Parts contributions to NEXUS

Recalvi Parts contributes to the NEXUS community through its consolidated purchasing volume, which reinforces the group’s negotiating power and strengthens overall supplier relationships.

We are fully committed to operational excellence, ensuring compliance with agreed conditions, forecasts and shared processes across the network.

In addition, we provide valuable sales and stock data, at agreed levels of aggregation, to support shared analytics and the development of value-added services.

Our extensive national coverage, with 128 warehouses, offers a robust platform for testing pilot initiatives and deploying regional programmes at scale.

This is further supported by our proprietary network of more than 800 workshops, which facilitates the rollout of services and provides direct operational feedback.

Combined with our strong logistics capabilities and stock availability, we contribute to improved service levels and delivery times across the market, while bringing deep knowledge of the Iberian market to help adapt group initiatives to local realities.

Opportunities and areas for improvement

Despite our strong positioning, several opportunities remain for further development.

Access to the Chinese vehicle market is currently limited, as we lack consolidated entry into the spare-parts ecosystem of emerging Chinese manufacturers, which restricts our ability to offer competitive solutions for these models.

There is also scope to accelerate digitalisation and improve data quality, particularly by standardising and enriching shared information to maximise the value of common platforms.

In parallel, we see a clear opportunity to diversify our catalogue more rapidly, particularly in electrical components and power electronics, in line with evolving vehicle technologies.

We also aim to expand partnerships with new suppliers, including specific agreements for electric vehicle parts and solutions related to battery recycling and recovery.

Measures to adapt to electrification

To address the transition towards electrification, Recalvi Parts is implementing a series of targeted measures.

We are investing in technical training for both workshop professionals and distribution staff to ensure readiness for new vehicle technologies.

At the same time, we are rebalancing our inventory towards electrical components and electronics, while actively negotiating with new suppliers to secure competitive and reliable sourcing.

We are also developing data-driven services, such as predictive maintenance and tailored repair kits, to create new revenue streams and enhance customer value.

Finally, by leveraging the scale and reach of the NEXUS network, we aim to improve access to electric vehicle components and battery recycling or recovery solutions under more competitive conditions. 

NEXUS AT THE CORE OF THE DATA-DRIVEN AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET ECOSYSTEM

NEXUS Automotive International is entering in a new phase of its history, with a strategy built on four pillars:

• Intermediation, connecting suppliers and distributors into one powerful community;

• a Transactional core that drives volume and rebates across the network;

• Innovation, constantly opening new avenues of growth for the NEXUS community;

• Data, the pillar that now underpins, and amplifies, the other three.

THE NEXUS GROUP TO STRUCTURE A VALUED ECOSYSTEM

THE NEXUS GROUP TO STRUCTURE A VALUED ECOSYSTEM

Data sovereignty and the AI revolution in the automotive aftermarket

That data pillar has never been more important. The global automotive aftermarket, a market estimated at over $650 billion in B2B activities, is navigating a period of rapid transition.

Rising vehicle complexity, fleet electrification, and unpredictable global supply chains are stretching inventory models built on isolated data and manual forecasting to their structural limits.

For many companies, keeping data to themselves can still feel like the safest option. But in a market increasingly shaped by connected vehicles, AI and real-time demand signals, the greater long-term advantage will come from trusted data ecosystems: securely sharing information, creating collective intelligence and unlocking value for all participants.

There is a real gap: while roughly 70% of companies have some form of AI in place today, only about one in seven manage to turn it into measurable business value.

The bottleneck isn’t the technology itself. It is the absence of trusted, well-governered, secure and collaborative data foundations.

This is precisely where NEXUS comes in.

Building on its role as trusted partner, the Group is launching “Sharing to Win” - an initiative that turns the Data pillar into a concrete, operational ecosystem, designed so every partner can share more value while reducing risk.

Why

now?

The window of opportunity is wide open. As vehicles become more connected, OEMs gain access to growing volumes of real-time telematics data.

This reinforces the need for trusted ecosystems for the independent aftermarket: ecosystems that allow all stakeholders to access, share and use their own data safely, while preserving their commercial independence.

“Sharing to Win” bridges that value gap. It builds the trusted infrastructure the aftermarket needs to compete, innovate and remain relevant in this rapidly changing environment.

Why we must build together

Competition is increasingly fought not only between companies, but between ecosystems. McKinsey estimates that by 2035, one-third of global GDP will be orchestrated by cross-industrial ecosystems, with trillions already flowing toward ecosystem-driven players.

This is where the value of the NEXUS ecosystem lies. It enables intelligence no single actor could ever achieve alone.

For example, if several distributors and workshops see an unusual rise in demand for a specific part in one region, a shared data ecosystem could detect that pattern earlier, alert suppliers and help partners adjust stock before shortages appear.

Joining the ecosystem is therefore not simply a growth strategy. It is a strategic response to disruptive tech players, increasingly data-rich OEM networks, and the growing complexity of the aftermarket.

Proven in the World’s Most Complex Industries

This shift toward trusted data ecosystems isn’t an experiment. It’s already the standard in some of the most sensitive sectors on earth:.

Aerospace predictive maintenance. Airlines have traditionally been cautious about sharing operational data, especially when it could influence commercial relationships. Airbus solved this with Skywise, a secure ecosystem where pooled aircraft and maintenance data can support predictive maintenance. Since an “Aircraft on Ground” event costs roughly $10,000–$25,000, this collaborative approach cuts unplanned maintenance by

15–30% without exposing a single airline’s route strategy.

Healthcare & pharmaceuticals. Secure data environments allow pharma companies, hospitals and insurers to collaborate on treatment insights, research and biomarkers without exposing raw personal health records, and while respecting strict medical-privacy rules.

Financial services. Banks can pool anonymised transaction signals to detect cross-institution fraud patterns. Federated AI models run on this shared foundation, catching fraud earlier without any bank ever seeing a competitor’s customer data.

The pattern is always the same: a neutral orchestrator allows competitors to pool data in a governed environment, creating intelligence none of them could build alone, while protecting commercially sensitive information.

NEXUS is now bringing this proven framework to the automotive aftermarket.

The core strategy: One flow, two isolated uses

Data is the ultimate business engine. But sharing data requires absolute trust.

A manufacturer may fear that detailed sales volumes could be used against it in annual

negotiations. A distributor may worry about exposing margins, customers or local market positions to competitors. These concerns are legitimate, and any credible data initiative must address them directly.

Derived from

Exposed granularity

NEXUS resolves this trust issue with a deliberately simple architecture: partners send a single granular data flow at SKU level into a protected clean-room environment. From that one flow, two strictly separated uses are derived:

The Rebates Business The Intelligence

Single SKU flow >>> aggregated to category

Macro — product categories only

Cadence Monthly at launch, weekly as use cases mature

Visibility Category aggregate only, to purchasing & finance

Because both uses come from one source, rebates and intelligence remain aligned, while raw data exists in only one protected environment.

NEXUS operates the clean room itself. Trust therefore does not rest on vague promises, but on a strict internal separation between the data function and the commercial-negotiation function. This separation is enforced through access controls, shared governance with supplier representation and independent audits.

The commitment is clear: SKU-level data stays inside the clean room. Only category-level aggregates are exposed to commercial

Single SKU flow >>> anonymised, fine-grained

Micro — anonymised SKU patterns

Same flow, same cadence

In the vault — invisible to negotiators

negotiators. NEXUS’ foundational promise is that raw, identified data will not be used for price negotiations.

The trust architecture, simplified We cannot ask partners to trust the system without giving them a system designed for trust.

Every time data is needlessly copied or moved, it creates a new compliance obligation and widens the risk surface. NEXUS minimises this risk with a Digital Vault: a data clean room built on three principles.

1. Data isolation. Raw SKU data is held in one controlled perimeter and never redis-

tributed. Only derived, governed outputs leave the vault. Commercial teams have no access to the raw data layer.

2. Anonymisation at the output. Statistical filters are applied to the results the ecosystem produces, allowing useful market trends to be shared while making it extremely difficult to identify any individual partner’s volume, margin or commercial position.

3. Frictionless onboarding. Joining a data network used to mean months-long IT projects and rigid templates. NEXUS lowers

that barrier: partners transmit data in their native formats, such as ERP or POS exports, and automated mapping algorithms read and normalise it with limited IT burden on the partner side.

The AI Revolution: Measurable Value

Industry leaders point to a well-known rule for scaling AI: roughly 10% of the value comes from algorithms, 20% from technology, and 70% from people and processes. This is why a trusted governance framework – not just an algorithm – is what unlocks value.

(The figures below are benchmarks from comparable implementations in other sectors, not guaranteed NEXUS results.)

Demand sensing. By analysing high-frequency signals – checkout data, distributor flows, workshop queries and regional patterns –the ecosystem can anticipate which parts are needed, and where. Comparable control towers have cut stockouts by up to 40% and improved forecast accuracy by around 30%.

Predictive maintenance. As the fleet shifts towards complex hybrids, EVs and advanced

electronics, AI can detect early fault patterns before they become visible through traditional channels. It can support faster diagnostics, higher first-time-fix rates for workshops, pre-positioned parts and anticipatory logistics for distributors.

Smart pricing. AI tools connected to the vault analyse demand elasticity, regional variation and competitor movement targeting categories with margin leakage, contributing to revenue gains of a few percentage points while freeing up cash trapped in dead stock.

The win-win and compliance

Actor The Ecosystem Solution

Suppliers 360° market radar beyond the sell-In blind spot

Distributors Predictive assortment + anonymised peer benchmarking

The Network Collective shield of pooled, anonymised data

The Return

Output aligned to real demand; less dormant inventory and wasted freight

Lower stockouts, stronger productivity, margins never exposed

Defending independence and premium conditions against OEM networks

Because the architecture isolates the raw flow and circulates only anonymised or aggregated outputs, it is designed to support compliance with demanding frameworks such as GDPR, the EU Data Act and AI Act, China’s PIPL and the revised Swiss FADP. Effective compliance nonetheless depends on the uses, consents and contracts of each deployment, and remains subject to dedicated legal review.

The “Sharing to Win” initiative turns an asymmetrical supply chain into a more collaborative and resilient ecosystem. By deploying the Digital Vault, NEXUS addresses the central dilemma of B2B trust: one flow in, two walled uses, sensitive data protected from sensitive commercial use, and governance strong enough to earn the confidence it asks from partners.

The window is open now. Building this first doesn’t mean conceding power. It means earning the one position a competitor cannot buy: the trust of every partner in the network.

This is the NEXUS community’s philosophy of being stronger together.

WHAT DOES “DATA” REALLY MEAN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE

AFTERMARKET?

In the aftermarket industry, the term “data” is often used as though its meaning were self-evident. In reality, it is often neither clearly defined nor inherently valuable. Today, companies have access to an unprecedented volume of information: car parc data, mileage, vehicle age, registrations, workshop activity, product volumes, pricing, distribution channels, and customer behaviour. Yet access to data alone is not enough. The real challenge lies in turning it into clear strategic direction that drives decisions.

GIPA have more than 40 years of experience in collecting and analysing aftermarket data. We understand that market reality cannot be captured through a single indicator. Car parc volume, for example, is a critical starting point. However, its true value emerges only when combined with

additional dimensions such as vehicle age, usage patterns, engine technology, regional distribution, driver behaviour, workshop capabilities, and parts value potential.

For example, measuring the number of EVs in circulation is only the first step.

Our analyses show that while EV drivers often report high satisfaction, they continue to encounter tangible barriers such as charging infrastructure availability, cost of charging, home installation constraints, and, importantly, the readiness of workshops to service these vehicles. These factors significantly influence the pace at which theoretical demand translates into real aftermarket activity.

Future demand becomes meaningful market opportunity only when the service ecosystem is fully prepared. A product category may demonstrate strong growth potential, but if workshops lack the necessary training, tools, or confidence, adoption will be delayed. This has direct implications for manufacturers planning product launches, as well as for distributors determining investments in inventory, technical support, and sales enablement.

A comprehensive market perspective also requires value - as well as volume - analysis. Certain product categories may decline in frequency while increasing in value due to growing technical complexity. Some regions may present modest volume growth but stronger profitability.

Likewise, mature segments can remain strategically important as ageing vehicle fleets continue to need ongoing maintenance. Without integrating both volume and value, market assessments will always be incomplete.

This is where forecasting plays a critical role. GIPA’s forecasting capabilities integrate multiple variables, including car parc evolution, product demand, technological developments, workshop readiness, driver expectations, and external factors such as regulation, geopolitical dynamics, and even weather conditions. By connecting these elements, we provide a forward-looking view that supports informed decision-making.

Long-term success in the aftermarket will not be determined by the quantity of data companies possess, but by their ability to ask the right questions, connect relevant data sources, and act decisively on the insights generated.

Transform Your Data into Strategic Advantage Discover more with GIPA Big Data Service. Designed as a fully tailored approach, GIPA Big Data Service combines your internal data with GiPA’s market intelligence, exten-

sive historical databases, and advanced forecasting expertise. Together, we define your key business questions, identify and integrate the most relevant data sources, and translate them into actionable insights across strategy, sales, product development, pricing, and market planning.

For example, by combining a customer’s historical sales data with GIPA’s market trends and detailed car parc evolution, we provide a deep and dynamic understanding of how the customer’s portfolio is evolving within a rapidly changing market. This enables you to anticipate shifts in demand, identify emerging growth segments, optimise your product mix, and align your commercial strategy with future market realities.

DIGITAL & AI – WHAT EXECUTIVES NEED TO KNOW

Theodoros Evgeniou opened with a simple question: what excites you about AI, and what worries you? The room responded with both. That tension between opportunity and uncertainty framed the entire discussion.

His central argument was clear: AI is not just another technology. It is a system-level force that reshapes how organizations operate, how decisions are made, and how value is created.

To understand its impact, he invited the audience to look at AI from multiple angles. At a scientific level, AI represents a fundamentally different form of intelligence. It does not replicate human thinking; it com-

plements it. In decision-making, diversity improves outcomes, and AI introduces a new kind of cognitive diversity. It can generate perspectives humans might not consider, challenge assumptions, and even—through its imperfections—force better reasoning.

At a societal level, AI is already shaping behaviour. Recommendation systems, social platforms, and algorithmic decision-making influence what people see, believe, and do. With generative AI, the impact goes further: it begins to affect how reality itself is constructed.

At a business level, the most common narrative is productivity. Theos argued that this is the least interesting aspect. The real potential lies in doing things that were previously impossible: redefining processes, services, and entire business models.

At a geopolitical level, AI is becoming a strategic asset. Different systems, market-driven in the United States, state-influenced in China, are leading to different applications and priorities. This is not just a technology race, but a competition between models.

Despite this potential, many organizations feel disoriented The pace of change is accelerating. Capabilities today are already significantly ahead of where they were just months ago. This creates uncertainty about what will remain relevant.

Theodoros acknowledged this feeling but framed it differently. There is hype, but there is also real progress. As with previous technological shifts, the short-term impact is often overestimated, while the long-term impact is underestimated.

A key challenge lies in how organizations approach value Many executives look for immediate returns before investing. This creates what he described as the “tyranny of numbers.” Some AI use cases can be quantified, but many cannot—especially in the early stages. History offers a useful perspective. Technologies such as personal computing or enterprise software did not deliver instant returns. Their value emerged over time, through changes in processes, organization, and behaviour.

AI follows the same pattern. It creates a J-curve: initial investment with limited visible return, followed by a phase of accelerating value. The delay is not due to the technology itself, but to the time required for organizations to adapt.

This leads to a familiar risk. Companies that adopt new technology without changing how they operate end up with what he described earlier as an “expensive old organization.”

If value creation is difficult, execution is even harder

A simple question illustrated this: how satisfied are companies with the quality and availability of their data? Almost none are. This highlights a fundamental constraint. The problem is not tools, it is data. AI systems depend on reliable, well-structured data. Without it, even the best models fail to deliver meaningful results.

More broadly, the main barriers to AI adoption are not technical. They are organisational. Change management, process redesign, and data governance consistently emerge as the hardest challenges.

So where should companies start? The instinct is often to wait for clarity. The recommendation here was the opposite: start anywhere.

Even small initiatives generate learning, and learning is the core of progress. Evidence shows that many successful organizations began with failed projects. Failure is not a sign of weakness; it is a necessary step in experimentation. Companies that do not fail often simply do not try enough.

This experimental mindset becomes particularly important when thinking about the impact of AI on work.

The common question: what will AI do to jobs? is misleading. The more relevant question is how AI affects tasks within jobs.

Each role consists of multiple tasks. Some can be automated, some augmented, and some remain unchanged. This task-level analysis provides a practical way to identify opportunities for efficiency.

But it also has limits. Optimizing tasks improves the current system. It does not address what happens when the system itself changes.

This distinction between local optimization and system transformation is critical.

Local optimization focuses on improving existing processes. System transformation questions the underlying business model. Both are necessary, but they operate on different timescales.

An example illustrates the point. Organizations may optimize processes within a given structure, only to find that the structure itself becomes obsolete. In such cases, local improvements do not translate into longterm advantage.

This is why the real question is not only how AI affects jobs, but how it reshapes value propositions.

In one study, what began as an analysis of job impact quickly evolved into a broader reflection on how entire industries could shift. If AI takes over core activities such as coding, companies may move toward governance, orchestration, or strategic services. The transformation happens at the system level, not just the task level.

To navigate this complexity, Evgeniou proposed a structured way of thinking about AI adoption. At the foundation are core capabilities: data, talent, and infrastructure.

Data must be available, reliable, and governed. Talent must be developed, not only technical skills, but also the ability to work effectively with AI. Infrastructure must support integration, scalability, and real-time data flows.

On top of these capabilities sit use cases. These include applications such as route optimization, inventory management, and pricing decisions. These are areas where predictive AI can already deliver measurable value.

Above all sits governance: the systems and rules that manage risk, ensure accountability, and align AI initiatives with strategy.

Several examples illustrated how value can be created in practice In logistics, predictive models can optimize routing, anticipate delays, and adjust operations in real time. In warehousing, dynamic slotting allows inventory placement to evolve continuously based on demand patterns. In pricing, even small interventions can have a significant impact. In one case, adding AI-driven price recommendations to a sales interface improved performance, particularly for less experienced salespeople, by balancing competitiveness and margins.

These examples highlight an important point: value often comes from integrating

AI into decision-making processes, not from standalone applications.

At the same time, some of the most critical investments do not produce immediate results.

Improving data quality, building governance structures, and standardizing systems are foundational steps. They rarely deliver shortterm ROI, but they enable future capabilities.

One example showed how assigning metadata and ownership to every data point in an organization can dramatically improve trust and usability. Such initiatives are complex but essential for scaling AI effectively.

Execution requires structure

The first step is building a shared understanding of AI across the organization. Without a common language, meaningful progress is difficult.

The second step is assessing capabilities: identifying gaps in data, talent, and infrastructure.

The third step is prioritizing use cases and defining an implementation roadmap.

From there, organizations move into execution, supported by continuous learning and change management.

Leadership plays a decisive role

For CEOs, the priority is to define ambition. Is AI used to improve efficiency, drive growth, or transform the business? This choice shapes the entire strategy.

They must also create an environment that supports speed and experimentation: enabling learning, accepting failure, and embedding AI across the organization.

For technology leaders, the role is different. They do not own the transformation, but they enable it. Their responsibility is to build platforms, ensure standards, and provide the infrastructure needed for AI to scale.

The discussion closed by widening the perspective further Organizations are not isolated. They operate within ecosystems. The challenge is not only to optimize individual performance, but to create value at the system level.

This requires coordination, shared standards, and collective investment. It also requires moving beyond local optimization toward a broader view, where the performance of the whole matters as much as that of each part.

The overall message was consistent throughout AI is not primarily a technological challenge. It is an organizational and strategic one. Its impact will depend less on the tools companies adopt than on their ability to learn, adapt, and rethink how they create value. The question is not whether AI will transform industries.

The question is whether organizations are ready to transform with it. 

INSIGHTS FROM THE AFTERMARKET WORLD AND BEYOND

VIO-DATA: TURNING INSIGHTS INTO AVAILABILITY

The heavy-duty aftermarket is constantly evolving. Vehicle technologies evolve, emission standards change, and fleet compositions differ significantly from one market to another. In this environment, understanding the vehicles operating on the road has become increasingly important for both suppliers and distributors.

The solution is proper diagnosis. Successful repairs now depend less on replacing individual components, but more on understanding how the entire system behaves, and which symptoms point to the true root cause.

Predicting market demand

One of the key tools behind these insights is Vehicle in Operation (VIO) data. Analys-

ing vehicle populations across regions, countries, brands, and vehicle age is a key enabler for anyone involved in the aftermarket spare part business, helping them understand which products are needed on the shelves today – and which will be in demand tomorrow.

For Dinex, this data helps identify market gaps, detect newly introduced OE technologies, and monitor how vehicle parc developments change over time.

Supporting better decisions

Data analysis is about much more than simple market statistics. When properly applied, it becomes fundamental for day-to-day aftermarket support. One of the best examples is how vehicle penetration and regional demand patterns are used for accurate production planning and stocking decisions. This reduces the risk of shortages by ensuring that relevant products are sufficiently available where customers are most likely to need them.

This is particularly important in the heavyduty sector, where downtime is critical and demand varies greatly between markets depending on fleet composition.

Identifying new opportunities

VIO insights also help identify emerging product opportunities. As new vehicle models enter the market, it can identify when future spare part introductions will most likely be needed, and supports alignment between sales strategies and changing customer demand.

At the same time, understanding longterm vehicle parc trends helps support strategic decisions related to inventory planning, product development, and market expansion.

Turning data into value

Good data management is ultimately about making better decisions. For suppliers, distributors, and workshops, reliable market insights help improve planning, product relevance, and customer support. In a competitive aftermarket, the ability to transform vehicle parc data into practical action is a key differentiator between the strongest aftermarket businesses and those struggling to keep pace. 

DATA ONLY CREATES VALUE WHEN IT MEETS THE MARKET

The automotive aftermarket generates vast amounts of data every day. Original Equipment (OE) data, Independent Aftermarket (IAM) catalogue data, vehicle information, workshop transactions, telematics, ordering processes, and repair histories all contribute to an increasingly complex digital environment.

On its own, data has little value. The real challenge is understanding how these different data streams relate to actual market behaviour. Each participant in the aftermarket sees only one part of the process: manufacturers focus on product data, wholesalers on distribution, workshops on repairs, and software providers on digital workflows.

Very few of these stakeholders see how these perspectives connect in operational reality. This is where TOPMOTIVE operates.

Through catalogue and dealer management systems used daily at point of sale across the independent aftermarket, TOPMOTIVE connects catalog data, vehicle information, ordering processes, and workshop operations.

This creates unique perspectives on how the market actually behaves — not theoretically, but in day-to-day business. And this perspective matters more than ever.

From Information to Operational Reality

The independent aftermarket is undergoing fundamental transformation. Vehicle technologies are changing, supply chains

are becoming more dynamic, and customer expectations continue to rise. At the same time, the amount of available data is growing exponentially.

The industry isn’t suffering a a lack of information. What it needs is clarity.

Data today is often discussed as if it were a standalone asset. In reality, its value depends entirely on context. A catalogue entry alone does not create value. A workshop invoice on its own does not create value. Unconnected telematics data does not create value. Only when information is connected to processes, vehicles, products, and market behavior does it become actionable.

This is particularly true in the independent aftermarket, where operational reality differs significantly from public perception.

What the Market Really Looks Like

Take the transition to electric mobility. Discussions around electrification are frequently driven by registration statistics and political targets. However, workshop operations across Europe reveal a much more differentiated picture. Internal combustion engine vehicles continue to dominate workshop business, while electric

vehicles still represent a comparatively small share of overall repair activity.

At the same time, the data shows important operational changes: Electric vehicles visit workshops less frequently, service structures differ from traditional vehicles, and over time, revenue shifts increasingly from spare parts to labor and diagnostics. These developments have direct consequences for workshops, wholesalers, and the broader aftermarket ecosystem. But they only become visible when market data is connected with actual workshop and transaction processes.

This is one of the key strengths of the independent aftermarket: proximity to the market itself.

Unlike purely theoretical market models, operational systems show what is really happening at the point of sale: which vehicles enter workshops, which parts are ordered, how repair behaviour changes, and how customer demand evolves across regions and markets.

Connecting and Empowering the Process Chain

At TOPMOTIVE, this perspective is built through systems that support the entire aftermarket process chain every day: vehicle identification, catalog and parts

data, ordering and procurement, workshop management, and transactional processes.

With more than 8,000 data providers, over 800 catalogues, and millions of daily user interactions, these systems generate valuable operational insights across the independent aftermarket.

This is not about collecting data for its own sake. It is about transforming operational complexity into practical market intelligence.

For example, data from workshop systems and transactional environments can help identify changes in repair behavior, emerging product demand, regional market developments, supply chain inefficiencies, and the real impact of new vehicle technologies.

This enables workshops and wholesalers to make better operational decisions, improve processes, and adapt business models earlier than would otherwise be possible.

Importantly, this also changes the role of data itself.

In the past, data was often treated as a supporting element; something main-

tained in the background while the real business happened elsewhere. Today, data management has become a business capability of its own.

Maintaining high-quality automotive data requires continuous validation, standardisation, interpretation, and operational integration. This is especially true in the independent aftermarket, where countless manufacturers, suppliers, systems, and markets interact, consistency becomes critical.

Without reliable connected data, even the best processes are inefficient. This is why the industry increasingly needs partners who understand not only data structures, but also the operational realities behind them. That’s because data without process understanding creates complexity instead of clarity. And clarity is becoming one of the most important competitive advantages in the aftermarket.

The Future Will Belong to Connected Intelligence

The future of the industry will not be defined solely by access to information. Information is already available everywhere. The differentiating factor will be the ability to connect information with real operational workflows and transform it into actionable decisions.

This applies equally to product data, vehicle data, workshop processes, ordering behavior, and future technologies such as connected vehicles or telematics.

All these areas will continue to grow together. At the same time, the complexity of the market will continue to increase. New drive technologies, regulatory requirements, digital business models, and changing customer expectations are reshaping the aftermarket faster than ever before.

No single participant can fully understand this complexity alone. Manufacturers see products.

Wholesalers see logistics. Workshops see repairs. But only connected operational systems reveal how the entire market behaves.

This broader perspective is what enables the aftermarket to remain efficient, competitive, and future-ready.

TOPMOTIVE’s role is not simply to digitalise processes. Our role is to connect the operational reality of the independent aftermarket through intelligent systems and reliable data structures, directly where market activity takes place every day. Because data only creates value when it meets the market.

Quality you can see: How Remote Support makes ATE’s Quality Initiative visible

In the aftermarket, “quality” isn’t a slogan. With the ATE Quality Initiative, ATE is putting that promise into a clear framework built on four pillars: experience, quality, portfolio, and service. And this last pillar – service – is where the initiative becomes truly tangible in daily workshop life.

ATE Remote Support transforms expertise into real-time, on-the-vehicle help, making quality not only something you install, but something you experience.

When phone calls and chats aren’t enough, workshops need a better view

Remote Support is designed for exactly these situations. It connects the workshop with technical hotline experts via a live video session using a standard smartphone or tablet. The real step-change, however, is the integrated augmented reality (AR) functionality. Instead of describing the problem

technicians and experts can work with the same live image and add visual guidance directly onto it.

Augmented reality that stays “locked” to the vehicle

The AR feature allows experts to mark relevant areas in the live camera image using virtual elements such as arrows, text, and lines and importantly: these markings remain fixed in place even if the camera moves. That means the discussion stays anchored to the real component – whether the camera shifts from brake disc to brake pad, or the technician changes position to access another angle. The result is a more precise exchange, fewer misunderstandings, and faster problem-solving. It’s collaborative: multiple workshop employees can join the same session and participants can leave comments on the shared screen, exchange documents in chat, and even export image sequences for later reference.

A modern service that fits workshop reality Remote Support is intentionally designed to be easy to adopt:

I no specialized hardware required – just a smartphone or tablet

I sessions can involve several technicians at once

I access is structured via invitation from the technical hotline

I system requirements are aligned with commonly used mobile devices

That simplicity matters because workshops don’t need another complicated tool—they need support that works quickly, under real conditions, with minimal disruption.

The takeaway: quality is not only what you buy, it’s what you can rely on

The ATE Quality Initiative 2025 puts a spotlight on what premium should mean in the aftermarket: long-standing expertise, uncompromising standards, broad coverage, sustainability-minded innovation – and a service ecosystem that supports workshops day by day.

ATE Remote Support brings that promise to life. It turns expertise into something you can see, share, and act on –live, at the vehicle. And that’s what makes it a compelling part of the Quality Initiative: it doesn’t just talk about quality, it helps deliver it, in real time. ate-brakes.com

CONNECTING THE AFTERMARKET: FROM COMPONENTS TO INTEGRATED WORKSHOP SUPPORT

The aftermarket continues to evolve as workshops adapt to increasing vehicle complexity, tighter service windows and a growing mix of powertrains across both light and commercial vehicles. In this environment, efficiency is increasingly shaped by how well products, data and technical support work together.

DRiV supports this shift through a portfolio designed to connect these elements into an integrated workshop ecosystem.

From Product Coverage to System Integration

Across its portfolio — including Monroe®, MOOG®, Walker®, Ferodo®, Jurid®, Beral®, Champion® and engine brands such as AE®, GOETZE®, GLYCO®, NURAL® and Payen® — DRiV provides coverage across braking, ride control, steering, emissions, ignition and engine systems.

Recent developments strengthen this system-level approach.

In ride control, Monroe® air springs have been developed for both commercial and passenger vehicles, with applicationspecific constructions such as convoluted and rollover designs for CV applications. These incorporate high-grade elastomer materials and corrosion-resistant components selected to operate under demanding load, vibration and environmental conditions.

In powertrain-related categories, Walker® has expanded into turbochargers, starters, alternators and air conditioning systems, providing a broader range of components linked to engine and thermal management. Remanufactured turbochargers are based on OE cores, with critical internal components replaced and units balanced and tested under controlled conditions prior to release.

Braking developments across Ferodo®, Jurid® and Beral® include copper-free friction formulations aligned with current regulatory requirements, combined with coated pad technologies developed to support controlled bedding-in behaviour during initial use. Complementing this, Ferodo brake drums are precision-machined and produced from applicationspecific cast materials to support balance and vibration control.

Beyond external systems, DRiV’s portfolio supports enginerelated repairs through AE®, GOETZE®, GLYCO®, NURAL®

and Payen®, covering pistons, rings, bearings and sealing solutions developed for compatibility with OE-specified engine architectures.

At the same time, Champion® supports ignition and filtration systems, including spark plugs, glow plugs, ignition coils and a full range of filters. These products incorporate features such as precision-engineered electrodes, high-dielectric ceramic insulation and multi-layer filtration media designed to manage airflow, contaminant capture and system protection across a wide range of applications.

To support installation accuracy, DRiV integrates QR-enabled access to product-specific technical information directly on packaging. This provides technicians with installation guidance, technical drawings and application details at the point of repair.

For NEXUS members, this integrated approach supports a more connected aftermarket model coverage, technical support and digital access.

As workshop requirements continue to evolve, the ability to link components, systems and knowledge will play an increasingly important role in delivering efficient and consistent repairs.

Market launch for the world’s first Front Phygital Shields in the BMW iX3

With the new all-electric BMW iX3, FORVIA HELLA is setting a milestone in the design of modern vehicle front ends: for the first time, Front Phygital Shields are entering series production. This highly integrated solution combines design, lighting technology and sensor systems in a large-area module, marking the starting point of a new product category for FORVIA HELLA.

What drives OE today, shapes the IAM tomorrow ››

High integration for future mobility

Front Phygital Shields are specifically designed for electric vehicles. They make use of the additional design and functional space at the vehicle front created by the elimination of the traditional radiator grille. As a scalable platform, they integrate lighting functions, brand-specific design elements and sensor technology, thereby addressing key market trends such as electromobility, automated driving and the demand for distinctive lighting design.

A new interpretation of BMW’s brand identity

In the BMW iX3, the Front Phygital Shields play a defining role in the exterior design. The iconic BMW kidney grilles are reinterpreted based on the “Neue Klasse” of the

1960s: slimmer, more sharply contoured and vertically aligned. As an option, they are available with illuminated “Iconic Glow”. The appearance is complemented by striking, horizontally designed full LED headlamps, which are also integrated into the module.

Reliable environmental perception and relevance for the IAM

In addition to design and lighting technology, the Front Phygital Shields integrate radar sensors for driver assistance systems. A heated, radar-transparent cover protects the sensors from weather influences and contamination, ensuring reliable radar performance even under harsh winter conditions.

For the Independent Aftermarket, this high level of integration increases the relevance of precise repair, correct replacement and professional ADAS calibration. As vehicle front ends evolve into sensor-integrated system modules, in-depth technical know-how and accurate diagnostics become essential along the entire vehicle lifecycle.

Development and production in Europe

Development and series production of the Front Phygital Shields take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, FORVIA HELLA’s global competence center for body lighting. The start of series production in the BMW iX3 underscores the company’s comprehensive development and industrialization expertise in highly integrated vehicle modules.

The BMW kidney grilles are smaller and more sharply contoured, while the headlamps, instead of their previously rounded appearance, now feature a more striking horizontal design.

All the variety you need: New multi V-belts and multi V-belt kits

Diversity is a winning ticket both in society in general and out on the road. So it’s great when workshops can get on board as well. Thanks to the new multi V-belt kits from Continental, they are able to cover an even wider range of repairs to the auxiliary drive. 20 additional models have now been added to the range, ensuring that workshops are ideally prepared for virtually any repair task. No matter whether a small Toyota Yaris is next up on the lifting platform, a 48V mild-hybrid Kia hums into the workshop or a Mercedes Sprinter workhorse is standing by – we have just the right multi V-belt kit for the job.

Light commercial vehicles have a tough job

Reliable availability of all spare parts and wear parts in the workshop is crucial, especially for light commercial vehicles. Indeed, these vehicles have made major leaps in quality over recent model generations and achieve very high mileages as a result. At the same time, the growth in urban delivery operations – with frequent starting and stopping and periods spent in congested traffic with the engine running – is placing greater demands on the auxiliary drive. These two factors both lead to greater wear, resulting in an increasing need for repairs.

New multi V-belt kit for BMW

One of the highlights of the new range is kit 6PK986K3. It additionally contains the belt pulley, which is positioned on the water pump in BMW 1 Series and 3 Series engines, where it acts as a torsional vibration damper. Mechanics therefore have all the components they

need instantly to hand with this kit, making it ideal for carrying out fast, accurate repairs. Further information can be found here: www.continental-ep.com/pic

For the auxiliary drive: new multi v-belts added to the range

The choice of multi V-belts available to order individually continues to grow. There are now 13 new models available, suitable for a wide array of vehicles from a compact Kia to a graceful Jaguar. Eight Elast belts have been released, along with a new commercial vehicle belt for the Mercedes-Benz Atego. The new belts cover a total of around five million vehicles in Europe. Every one of these belts is the result of over 150 years of experience and uncompromising quality according to OE. And they are all protected by a five-year guarantee for registered workshops. The best way to find out whether the right belt is available for your repair requirements is to check here: www.continental-ep.com/pic

Cartridges for Daimler

Engineered for the Future of Air Treatment.

New Daimler application of oil separator cartridge available.

Knorr-Bremse introduces the aftermarket solution for Daimler Air Treatment System.

Knorr-Bremse’s high drying and filtration performance is once more chosen by Daimler for their newest OE application in the Scalable Air Treatment Product (SATP).

This product launch covers two cartridge part numbers for vehicles with high pressure (<17 bar) and mid pressure (<14 bar). With the new application of SATP at Daimler, which is the next global scalable generation of electronic air treatment, this will be used for many vehicle applications of Daimler. The product parc has already exceeded 100k vehicles and is expected to grow strongly in the next years.

The cartridge should be exchanged every 12-24 months, depending on the air demand of the vehicle. It is based on Knorr-Bremse’s well established OSC-Technology, which combines air drying and oil filtration in one product. Both cartridges come with a patented interface which includes a left-handed thread. This makes it not backward compatible to existing cartridges which have a right-handed thread.

HOW KYB IS USING DATA AND AI TO IMPROVE QUALITY, RELIABILITY AND LONG TERM VALUE

In today’s automotive aftermarket, data has become something much more practical than IT systems and spreadsheets - it is a way to improve product quality, reliability and customer confidence.

At KYB, data is increasingly generated not in offices, but inside products, production lines and vehicles themselves. Sensors, testing systems and AI based analysis are now quietly shaping how suspension components are designed, manufactured and supported across global markets.

FROM “INSPECT AND REACT” TO “MEASURE AND PREDICT”

Traditionally, many areas of manufacturing and product development relied on experience and periodic inspection Today, that approach is being replaced by continuous measurement. Across KYB’s operations, large volumes of data are now captured from:

• Manufacturing equipment and assembly lines.

• Sensors used during product testing and validation.

• In vehicle systems measuring vibration, movement and operating conditions.

Instead of checking quality after the event, data allows issues to be detected earlier, trends to be identified sooner and variation to be reduced before products ever reach the aftermarket.

For distributors, this translates into even

greater confidence in fit, function and durability.

WHY AI IS PART OF THE PICTURE

Collecting data is only the first step. Modern systems generate far more information than people can analyse manually, especially when signals change rapidly or conditions vary. This is where AI and machine learning are increasingly used to support engineers. At KYB, AI is applied in areas such as:

• Detecting subtle anomalies in manufacturing processes.

• Analysing complex vibration and motion data.

• Supporting predictive maintenance of equipment.

• Improving visual inspection accuracy on production lines.

DATA THAT LEADS TO ACTIONNOT JUST DASHBOARDS

One of the biggest misconceptions about data is that it only produces reports or charts. In reality, the most valuable data changes what happens next. Examples of data driven decisions inside KYB include:

• Adjusting production processes automatically when early signs of variation appear.

• Refining control characteristics to improve ride comfort and stability.

• Identifying component behaviour before it becomes a warranty issue.

The result is a feedback loop where products improve continuously - not just between generations, but during their lifecycle. For aftermarket partners, this means ensuring the product performs correctly and minimising warranties.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET

From a distributor’s perspective, data and AI may feel distant from day to day operations. But their impact is already visible:

• Quality consistency reduces returns and complaints.

• Predictable performance builds installer confidence.

• Better durability insight supports longer product lifecycles.

In short, data helps ensure that what leaves the factory performs the same way in the workshop, on the road and over time.

THE HUMAN ROLE HASN’T DISAPPEARED - IT’S CHANGED

Despite the technology involved, this is not a story about automation replacing people.

Engineers still define performance targets, safety margins, durability requirements and validation standards. Data and AI simply allow those decisions to be made with greater accuracy and confidence.

For KYB, this combination of engineering expertise and data driven insight is essential to maintaining trust – not only with vehicle manufacturers, but also with the global aftermarket network that supports millions of vehicles every day.

CONCLUSION: DATA AS A FOUNDATION FOR TRUST

In the automotive aftermarket, trust is built on consistency, reliability and long term performance. Data has become a powerful tool in supporting those values. By using data to measure more precisely, respond more quickly and improve continuously, KYB is strengthening the foundation behind every product it supplies to the aftermarket.

For distributors and partners, the takeaway is simple: better data upstream leads to stronger confidence downstream – and that benefits everyone in the value chain.

One product, maximum compatibility

LIQUI MOLY

launches

brake

fluid

4 in 1 on the market

Why Brake Fluid 4 in 1? Four benefits at a glance:

1. Versatile

The brake fluid segment in particular is regularly supplemented by new technologies with a wide range of product designations and specifications. This is exactly where LIQUI MOLY’s new product comes into play. Brake Fluid 4 in 1 covers several standards at once and makes everyday workshop life more efficient: DOT 4, DOT 5.1, SL6 DOT 4, DOT 5.1 LV. It prevents incorrect filling, reduces inventory and ultimately cuts costs.

2.

Perfect interplay with Brake Fluid Tronic

With Brake Fluid 4 in 1 and Brake Fluid Tronic, LIQUI MOLY’s de vice for professional brake fluid service, changing the brake fluid has never been easier. One canister remains permanently in the device. That means: No need to constantly change the container, which in turn reduces preparation time and enables cleaner and faster work. Both products together form a complete professional service package that makes everyday workshop life noticeably easier and increases efficiency and quality.

3. Fast and safe braking

With extremely high wet and dry boiling points, the brake fluid offers maximum safety – even with high thermal loads, a sporty driving style or long downhill drives. The result is shorter response times, stable braking performance, and a reduced risk of steam bubble formation.

4. Perfectly suited for ABS, TC and ESP

Brake Fluid 4 in 1 is perfectly matched to modern safety systems. The low viscosity really shows its strength when combined with finely tuned ESP and ABS modulators. This offers several advantages, including rapid pressure build-up even at low temperatures, precise control of electronic brake systems, protection of safety systems against wear and corrosion, and an extended service life for expensive components such as ESP hydraulic blocks or clutch slave cylinders.

The new Brake Fluid 4 in 1 is available in containers of 5, 20 and 60 liters. Greater convenience in the workshop – more safety in the everyday life of drivers.

Transformation through digitalization and data management

The world we live in is constantly changing. It is not surprising that this change also affects the global filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL - in the way they deliver solutions, the way of creating them and the way interacting with each other.

Digitalization is one of the three strategic drivers for transformation at MANN+HUMMEL, along with sustainability and the changing mobility landscape. To compete in the market, companies must remain agile. The company states: “In everything we do, we start with our customers. Understanding their needs and expectations, predicting market developments and making data-based decisions driven from an outside-in perspective is a crucial part of our digital transformation process. Our goal is to provide our customers with leading digital experiences and data management, to be accessible and to continuously optimize and expand our digital service offerings. For this purpose, one of our main digital transformation initiatives is focused on restructuring our digital landscape including databases, systems, and front ends, with a strong orientation towards the customer interface.

Filtration remains at the heart of what we do, but as our environment becomes more complex, we are

enriching our products and services with helpful digital offerings and interfaces. One example is using the product content platform loadbee to provide our customers detailed, bundled information on the products of our premium filtration brand

NRF INNOVATION RANGEUNIQUE AFTERMARKET PARTS OFFER FOR BYD

NRF is strongly committed to e-Mobility, recognizing the fast growth of the electric vehicle aftermarket. Claiming to be a leading supplier of parts for electric vehicles comes with responsibility, and the most important one is to actually have the parts available. Last year, NRF launched a complete aftermarket range for all Tesla models, and now the same is happening for BYD, one of the world’s fastest-growing EV brands. Expanding beyond its traditional scope, NRF now also offers steering, suspension, filtration, body parts and more for these vehicles.

COOLING THE BATTERY AND POWER ELECTRONICS

In an electric vehicle, the cooling system remains an integral part of the powertrain. To ensure optimum performance, the batteries and power electronics must be maintained within a specific temperature range. The cooling system therefore retains its recognizable layout, with the radiator as a key component. The coolant is circulated by an electric pump to keep the powertrain electronics operating safely and efficiently in all environmental conditions.

A/C SYSTEM IN ELECTRIC CARS

As with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, EVs also have HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) for the passenger cabin. In ICE vehicles, the engine powers the HVAC system through a belt-driven compressor. In electric vehicles, this function is taken over by an electric motor-driven compressor. A poorly functioning HVAC system increases power consumption and reduces vehicle range, making proper maintenance essential.

INNOVATION RANGE –

COMPLETE AFTERMARKET OFFER FOR TESLA AND BYD

This is true aftermarket innovation. At Automechanika Frankfurt 2024, NRF launched a completely new range of parts for all Tesla models. Expanding well beyond its traditional product scope, the range now features 25 new product groups, including steering,

suspension, filtration, braking, body, and exterior components. The newest addition is a full range of 200 parts developed specifically for BYD vehicles. The INNOVATION RANGE is continuously growing, including ICE references for Chinese brands.

EV TECHCLUB - ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE IN ONE PLATFORM

Innovation has always been part of NRF’s DNA. For over a century, the company has helped shape the future of mobility. Today marks the start of a new chapter: EV Techclub, a complete platform designed for the evolving world of e-Mobility. It offers mechanics at every level the tools and knowledge to grow into true EV specialists.

The EV Techclub includes:

Online training

Safety sheets and manuals for all brands

From Data to Decisions

As vehicles, data and parts portfolios grow ever more complex, reliable standards and precision have become critical for the independent aftermarket. In this interview, Fabrizio Giannelli, Vice President Global ITG & Partner Management at TecAlliance, outlines how the focus on standardisation, validated data and real-world repair intelligence is enabling distributors and workshops to navigate complexity, reduce returns, and make better decisions across the value chain.

What is currently the biggest challenge for distributors in the independent aftermarket?

Fabrizio Giannelli: Day‑to‑day operations are increasingly shaped by complexity and cost pressure. More vehicle variants and expanding catalogues increase the risk of wrong orders and returns, making precise parts identification and standardised, reliable data critical to maintain efficiency and control inventory.

What role does TecAlliance play for distributors and workshops today?

Fabrizio Giannelli: TecAlliance provides the neutral data foun dation of the independent aftermarket. We connect workshops, distributors and suppliers through trusted standards and

validated data to ensure correct vehicle identification, accurate part matching and reliable processes such as ordering, returns or repairs.

For distributors, this means standardised product and vehicle reference data that supports automation and reduces wrong orders as catalogues and vehicle variants grow.

For workshops, we enable faster, more consistent repair decisions through real repair cases and digital maintenance processes that reduce administrative effort. TecRMI Verified Repairs strengthens this by turning workshop cases into valida ted repair solutions, covering more than 250,000 fault codes to support more efficient diagnosis and repair.

How is TecAlliance responding to the growing complexity of the aftermarket?

Fabrizio Giannelli: We are strengthening our role as a data service provider focused on scalable infrastructure, standar disation and interoperability. Key priorities are improving data quality and expanding vehicle reference data to reduce misfit and returns, while aligning technical information more closely with real workshop practice.

The growing market share of Chinese vehicle manufacturers adds further complexity, particularly due to limited data availa bility despite type‑approval requirements in Europe. To address this, TecAlliance is investing heavily in local presence close to the data source, including offices in markets such as Shanghai, to capture, validate, and deliver reliable information to the independent aftermarket.

How data quality is transforming the automotive aftermarket

Interview with Patrick Baßiere, Manager Global Data Excellence at TMD Friction

As the automotive aftermarket grows more complex, so does the need for structured, consistent and current product data. Patrick Baßiere explains why data quality directly affects returns, efficiency and customer satisfaction and how manufacturers and wholesalers must work together to address these challenges.

Mr. Baßiere, what do you see as the core challenge in today’s automotive aftermarket?

The automotive aftermarket is becoming increasingly complex, not only from a product perspective but also due to growing regulatory requirements. Standards and regulations such as R90, Euro 7 or region-specific requirements like CCC, KC or Inmetro are significantly increasing the complexity of product development. At the same time, these requirements must be translated into structured, consistent and usable product data. This is where an additional challenge emerges:

ensuring that all regulatory, technical and applicationrelated information is accurately reflected across different systems and markets. As a result, the real complexity of the aftermarket does not lie in the product or the data alone, but in the combination of both.

How does this data complexity affect wholesalers in their day-to-day business?

Very directly and above all, financially. Unclear data turns part identification into an uncertain decision. This leads to multiple orders, incorrect deliveries and ultimately, returns, causing delays in workshops and inefficiencies across the entire value chain.

At its core, wholesalers need certainty confidence that the identified part is correct from the start.

Every deviation creates cost and often customer frustration.

“We don’t just have a product challenge – we have a data challenge that comes with it.”

You mentioned that your company has developed a leading solution to address these challenges. What do you do differently?

We see product data not as a by-product of our processes, but as a strategic asset. That’s why we established our own platform as a central data backbone, operating today as a single source of truth.

All relevant information (internal data, external sources and OE references) is consolidated into one consistent model. Clear governance ensures that data remains structured, comparable and reliable across systems.

Data quality means a reduction in returns.

Updates can be implemented near real-time, and at least multiple times per day. Delays often occur not on the manufacturer side, but in downstream systems that update less frequently.

What does this approach mean in practical terms for wholesalers?

From a wholesaler’s perspective, the most noticeable impact is increased confidence. Part identification becomes faster and more reliable, while processes run more smoothly.

In practice, this leads to higher hit rates and fewer returns. Data quality delivers tangible value by reducing friction, accelerating decisions and improving service.

What role do established standards like TecDoc play in this context?

TecDoc remains the backbone of the European aftermarket, ensuring data is structured and comparable across systems.

Through our involvement in the TecDoc Data Supplier Expert Group requirements can be fed directly into the standard. Our certification as a TecDoc Premier Data Supplier confirms our data meets the highest quality standards and provides wholesalers with reliability.

How do international markets differ, particularly North America and China?

North America, with ACES and PIES, follow a more open approach. This creates flexibility but shifts responsibility for data validation towards the customer; requiring close cooperation between manufacturer and wholesaler.

China operates as a platform-driven ecosystem, where solutions such as WeChat are central. Here, part identification is embedded in digital interactions, requiring data to be contextually accessible.

Taking a global perspective: what does the wholesale market truly expect from manufacturers?

Wholesalers need reliable decision-making. Data must be clear, current and consistent across all systems to ensure the right products are available at the right time.

High product visibility and strong vehicle coverage are key indicators of success, providing the orientation and confidence the market requires.

How do you see the role of wholesalers evolving in the future?

Wholesalers are increasingly becoming integrators within the data ecosystem. They connect different data sources, link systems and form the interface between manufacturers, workshops and end customers.

The ability to integrate and use data will become a decisive competitive advantage.

What is your personal conclusion after many years in data management?

Data management is no longer just an IT topic, it is a core business discipline. Companies that manage their data effectively reduce complexity and enable faster and better decisions.

If I had to summarise it in one sentence: Clarity in data creates confidence in decision-making. Or, more pragmatically: Data quality means a reduction in returns.

Navigating the Future –The EU Data Act and the Independent Automotive Aftermarket

Q1: The EU Data Act came into effect in September 2025 with the promise of enabling fair access to data generated by connected products. From Schaeffler’s perspective, what are the most significant opportunities this legislation brings for the independent automotive aftermarket?

Interviewee: Jan Bambas – Vice President Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs, Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions

The automotive aftermarket is entering a new phase shaped by data access, digital services, and sustainability. With the EU Data Act aiming to make vehicle-generated data more accessible, independent market players may gain new opportunities to develop innovative services and compete on a more level-playing field. Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions sees this development as a key enabler for smarter diagnostics, improved repair processes, and more sustainable mobility solutions.

The EU Data Act marks an important shift by giving vehicle users the right to access and share data generated by their vehicles. For the independent aftermarket, this creates a more level playing field between OEMs and independent operators. Greater access to vehicle data can enable new services such as predictive maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and more tailored repair solutions. In turn, this can help extend vehicle lifespans and support sustainability goals. Although some limitations remain, particularly around cybersecurity and user consent, the strategic potential is considerable. Aftermarket players that invest early in data integration and interoperability will be better positioned to develop new business models and optimize their operations as the market evolves.

Q2: What are the main challenges that Schaeffler and the aftermarket industry need to navigate to fully realize the benefits of the EU Data Act?

Q3: Could you explain how this partnership with CARUSO supports sustainability and innovation in the aftermarket ecosystem?

One of the main challenges is the fragmented state of data access models, as OEM implementation for the independent aftermarket (IAM) is still at an early stage. Differences in telematics capabilities and data formats also make it difficult to build scalable use cases. In addition, some data can only be accessed with user consent and must be handled in line with GDPR and privacy regulations, especially where personal data is involved. At Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions, we believe the short-term financial impact may be limited, but the long-term strategic opportunity is significant. That is why we are already piloting use cases such as remote diagnostics and environmental impact insights through our collaboration with the CARUSO data platform.

CARUSO is an open, neutral data platform that connects OEMs, fleets, and service providers across the mobility ecosystem. It helps turn mobility data into actionable insights within a secure, scalable, and privacy-compliant framework. Through this partnership, we can pilot sustainability-focused and data-driven use cases. One example is a dashboard developed by Schaeffler for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, fleet drivers. The solution helps raise awareness of environmental impact and encourages more efficient, electric driving behaviour. By supporting smart data applications, CARUSO and Schaeffler contribute to lower emissions, better resource efficiency, and a more circular approach to vehicle maintenance and repair. Our goal is to integrate sustainability into connected mobility through data and innovation.

Q4: Looking ahead, how does Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions envision the future role of data in supporting a sustainable, competitive automotive aftermarket?

We see the future of the independent aftermarket as increasingly data-driven, with sustainability as a central value. Data access will empower independent operators to offer services that extend vehicle life, reduce waste, and lower carbon emissions. The EU Data Act provides an enabling framework for this shift by improving access to vehicle data and supporting innovation and competition. As we continue to pilot new use cases and work with industry partners, better data access can unlock new business models and more efficient repair processes, with clear benefits for both competitiveness and sustainability.
