Self-love and self-compassion are key to accepting the shadow and working with them. Some of Elena's favourite tools are also breathwork, feminine movement, grounding, and Gene Keys.

Our shadow consists of the traits we often elude in an attempt to seek our own selfacceptance. These can stem from our childhood traumatic experiences, and can include traits deemed 'unacceptable by others,' and is therefore buried deeper in the psyche. It is made up of the negative qualities we refuse to admit to ourselves and often suppress.

Often, we cling to a particular version of ourselves and this is called the ego. It is also known as our 'sense of self.' It can be used to mask our shadow traits or worn to thrive through life. It is what we choose as our identity. Many see through the façade and choose to accept all aspects of ourselves. However, the ego can become a fictitious 'reality' that breeds a deeper shadow within. Although the ego does anything to keep us safe, our unintegrated inner child can rule the mind.

How to Connect with your Shadow: Daily journaling is particularly useful. Use this to bring forward what you have bottled up and kept in the dark.

Ask yourself: "How has it felt to be treated by me?

What do you want me to see? To hear? To know? What can I do today to reveal that I value you? How can I protect you?"

Use your intuition and inner power to expand on all the questions.

Be thorough and honest with yourself.

Keep your journal in a safe place and let it be your safe space to unravel all that your inner shadow has to heal.

I was given this book by a friend I met at an event. I was so excited when it was handed to me, as I’m a huge fan of Cara Alwill. I heard Cara speak at an event a few years ago and she was so down-to-earth, authentic and well… confident!

Receiving a diagnosis or “label” can be helpful when it comes to understanding why we act the way we do. But what about when it becomes our identity?

Labels… it seems that most people either love them or hate them, and I can see why. When it comes to mental health, it’s no secret that many of us feel very alone and stigmatized. Receiving a diagnosis or “label” can be helpful when it comes to understanding why we act the way we do. It can be very validating to understand that our feelings and symptoms aren’t exaggerated in our minds, but what about when they become our identity?

Our thoughts always lead to feelings, whether consciously or subconsciously, and these feelings can create our behaviours. Certain symptoms may be problematic and distressful and a diagnosis can provide a valid start to overcoming the challenges in our lives.

On the other side of the coin, I have also experienced the downsides of having “labels” and diagnoses; especially when it comes to personality disorders and the inconsistency that often comes from the psychiatric field. In my life, I have received 4 different diagnoses, each separate from the others and based on unique psychiatrists I spoke with. The inconsistency made it difficult to know which issue needed treatment. It’s a fair argument that although the DSM (also known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) is a good tool it is not a one size fits all.

Clinging to labels after diagnosis can be quite harmful if you see it as a way to remain in victim mode while blaming your mental health (I did this subconsciously for a very long time.)

Playing the part of “crazy” is not the same thing as accepting a diagnosis and choosing to heal these difficult behaviours. Living in denial is not what I am suggesting either. Mental illness is a very real experience for many individuals. Being accountable and having an open mind, regardless of the title of your diagnosis, is key for adapting to circumstances.

No one chooses their diagnosis, but sometimes our human experience and biological chemistry can make us more prone to difficulties than others. Depending on the doctor you see, therapy and/or medication can be life-changing. They can offer you tools and support to help you navigate and live your life in more expansive ways. Through proper diagnosis, we can then seek the personalized help we need. But, we are not powerless.

Recently, I was informed I met the criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder. Prior to that, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and General Anxiety Disorder. Did I feel validated? Yes. Did I get the appropriate help I needed? Yes. Did I also feel even worse about myself after my fourth diagnosis? YES. What I do not wish for anyone is to think that you are somehow flawed because you have been given a mental health “label.”

You may already feel hopeless. You may feel isolated. But, whatever limiting beliefs or anxious thoughts arise for you, I promise you are not any of your negative perceptions, and you most certainly are not alone.

The more I studied, the less I feared.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a healing modality that focuses on coping strategies such as emotional regulation, mindfulness, radical acceptance, and powerful ways of navigating such strong and deep emotions. Through DBT, my own inner work, and a therapist, I no longer met the criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder.

I never accepted that my life would be cut short because of my mental health. Instead, I chose to use my experiences to show up for myself and others, treat people with compassion, and be grateful for the amazing qualities I possess, despite what the doctors were trained to tell me.

The mental health community is very inclusive for the most part, however, there are still many generalizations and stigmatizations people face. Most people are left thinking their diagnoses or labels make them “less than” when it’s utterly untrue. The components to each diagnosis make you unique, beautiful, and HUMAN. A symptom of BPD is feeling very, very deeply. This can be troubling at times, but when we look at it from the other side that means feeling joy very deeply, feeling empathy very deeply, and feeling gratitude very deeply.

When the symptoms of your mental health are distressing to yourself and others, it’s important to seek help without judgement. You owe it to yourself to experience life as the healthiest and happiest version of you. Doing the work with a therapist can feel daunting. It’s important to remember that while you seek a professional to help navigate, it can be a bit like dating. You are not going to resonate with everyone and that’s okay. There are many trained professionals and the search is well worth it. When you find someone who can help you, the rewards you reap are priceless.

The other important piece is to remember that, chances are, there is a reason why you feel the way you do. It could be a past experience or traumatic event, but it doesn’t have to dictate the way you live the rest of your life. Slow down long enough to process your past and your present feelings.

Whether you trust your diagnosis or not, I want you to remember that you are so much more than your label. You are you, and there is only one version of you in the entire universe. You do not need to suffer alone or in silence, nor should you. If you need help, don’t be afraid to seek it. There are so many resources to help you grow into your most empowered self.

The world is waiting for you, so what are you waiting for?
