UST over eight years ago, I sat in Paul Sharff’s fifth-floor office at the Early Learning Coalition HQ, and Nextgen Family Magazine was born. Paul had hired me to deliver his vision of Manatee County’s first family publication.

Always a man of so many ideas, he had been sitting months before in the reception room of his son’s Orthodontist and picked up a small publication packed full of adverts, but without any content or pictures. Paul saw a gap in the local community, and his instruction was quite clear – give me the biggest and the best.

We quickly set to work on convincing the School District to allow us to distribute Nextgen into the backpacks of all children in the K-5 system. This was something no one else could get. Paul made it happen. We set a target of August to launch, Back to School.

The inaugural issue of Nextgen hit the streets in May. Inside five months, with some help from many of his contacts and with the experience of his Scottish Editor (although he told folks I was from Arcadia), we got it done.

Less than six months later, we sat in Orlando together – Nextgen was named Best New Magazine by the Florida Magazine Association. He beamed with pride. We were not a full-time publishing house (as I often used to tell him!), but we had beaten all of them to the prize.

Nextgen never looked back. For the past eight years, we have featured countless local agencies, fellow non-profits, children, families, restaurants, events – just about everything that is good about Manatee County. We also showcased the Early Learning Coalition, our Publisher, and took our mission to new heights. The revenues Nextgen generated in advertising over the years have been invested into the Coalition programs that serve over 6000 local kids. But it was never about money; it was about giving the community something to share and enjoy.

This August is our 50th issue. That Paul won’t be there to see it breaks our hearts. Paul’s sudden passing on January 12th came right on deadline – to the very end, he would throw me curveballs.

This tribute is nowhere near enough, and in our next issue, we will pay homage to a man who did so much for this community. I will miss you so much, Mr. Publisher – but Nextgen will live long as just a part of your enormous legacy.

T

he title of General Counsel for the School District of Manatee County may sound like an ordinary job, but Mitchell Teitelbaum (MT) brings a vibrant personality and unique passion to his career that makes this particular General Counsel one of a kind.

I see in teachers in Manatee County. I see the favorable things as I sit through meetings that the teachers are present, and I can hear the love of their students and the want of success and the guidance counselors who say, "yes, this is the pathway we need for the success of the student."

According to the school district's website, the position of General Counsel is "hired by and reports directly to the Superintendent.

He provides general legal advice and representation for the entire School District, consistent with the School Board of Manatee County Policy and Procedure Manual. He represents the Superintendent in prosecuting employee discipline cases and student expulsions. He oversees all district contracts as well as all existing and new school board policies. He attends all board meetings."

There was also Mr. Sykes, who was a typing teacher. But he did not teach me typing; he taught me, French. I developed a love for languages to the point that one of my passions is speaking a different language. I try to learn as much as I can, and being

Prior to even sitting down with Mitchell, his eagerness and dedication can be seen in his friendly emails and quick responses that aren't just confined to business hours. Upon meeting one-onone with Mitchell to interview him, it immediately became evident how open and personable he was through his conversational tone, detailed responses, and the occasional joke.

Being born and raised in Los Angeles, Mitchell was introduced to multiple cultures and languages, which created the foundation for his love of always wanting to learn more. However, it was in the fifth grade that two teachers really made a lifelong impression on him. He says his love of languages was developed as well as a heart for the education system.

NG: What was it that brought about your desire to work in the education system?

MT: I went to public schools, and when I started the 5th-grade, I began a love of education. Everyone has teachers in life, but my 5th-grade teachers were the most predominant teachers in my life. I was in Mr. Smith's gifted class, and he was a dynamic teacher. His colloquialisms stood out to me the most, and he took an interest in his students that he really cared. It's the same quality 9

from Los Angeles, Spanish was second nature, next to the best Mexican food in the country. My love of language grew because I was influenced by an educator.

NG: What else does your job entail?

MT: I have the opportunity every year to train the Guardians, who are armed security officers who have no law enforcement authority. With the tragic Parkland shooting, Coach Aaron Feis who gave his life to save those students had the Guardian program named after him. I am able to train the Guardians and teach them about school procedures, the code of student conduct, their role as a Guardian, what they can and cannot do to prevent an active assailant, and how to be successful in their job, not on patrol, but within the culture of the school environment in the sense of how we protect student privacy and ensure optimum safety on their campus.

I also took on the risk management department this year which is the prevention of accidents, workers compensation claims, and the purchase of insurance. My goal is to mitigate risk and to ensure that we have the proper coverages in place at all times.

NG: How has COVID changed your job in the last two years?

MT: With the executive orders, it's made it very difficult to interpret what the executive order actually meant and its implications. The Department of Education also gave guidance to us on what the interpretations are. They'll tell you how they feel it applies and give guidance to the District. There were a lot of orders coming in and a lot of compliance issues to the point where it evolved to a parent bill of rights in the latest legislation, ensuring what we can and cannot do.

NG: What brought you to Manatee County?

MT: My father, David Teitelbaum, owned hotels out on Anna Maria Island. He was a real estate developer and was very actively involved in this community. He served on the Economic Development Council and brought the trolley to Anna Maria Island.

He would have been down here for almost three decades, so I would come to vacation on Anna Maria Island for over a decade, and I finally moved here in April of 2014 and started as General Counsel on May 1st, 2014.

NG: What did you do prior to becoming the General Counsel?

MT: I was an attorney and partner for a law firm in New York for 16 years, where we handled insurance defense work primarily for the New York City Housing Authority. Prior to that, I worked as house counsel for three different insurance companies.

NG: What do you love most about your job as General Counsel?

MT: I really like helping others, and I love this type of position because the service is the education of children, and I support those who support children's education. I support the departments and the schools whose mission is to educate our children. I've seen such tremendous growth these years with our school grades and our leadership. This county and District have evolved in many respects, and it's for the better. I love to constantly learn and to grow and not to stay stagnant. That's why this job is amazing. It's ever-changing; it's never the same.

NG: What is the secret to success in your office?

MT: Knowing the legal issues, you can ask the necessary questions to resolve those issues. We don't make up the law; we interpret the law. It's also all about relationships. It's about gaining trust amongst those that rely upon you to give good legal advice that people can rely on and being fair.

NG: Is there anyone in particular that you'd like to recognize in your success as General Counsel?

MT: Andrea Messina, the Executive Director of the Florida School Board Association, has been a tremendous resource and gave me initial guidance when I first started and knew no one. Our Superintendent, Cynthia Saunders, brought me more to the school level, and I really credit her for opening another aspect to my world which would have remained closed otherwise. I have a lot of gratitude for the leadership of Ms. Saunders. Under her administration, I have truly grown and become a better attorney than I ever was before. My wife of 30 years, Joanna Petriccione, has been my biggest support and inspiration. Seeing her success has been so encouraging to me and pushed me to succeed as well.

T

he USA Fence main office on East Cortez Road is a humble building that one may easily pass by without knowing what a bustling company operates within. The offices line one main hallway and all of the doors are open—an environment that seems to reflect the Glasgow approach to business and service.

O n the wall that fla nks CEO a nd founder Butch Glasgow's office and the conference room, there is an illustration of "The Glasgow Tree"— a creative depiction of the company's growth since its inception in 1971. The mirrored background of the painting feels like an

intentional choice, falling in line with the culture of inclusion that serves as the foundation for their modus operandi.

Butch Glasgow was born in Grand Island, New York. He was kicked out of high school after completing only two weeks of ninth grade. At 16, he doctored his birth certificate and joined the Army. His son, Shannon, said that he once spoke with the principal responsible for his father's dismissal and was told that he "was certain Butch was going to end up in jail." Clearly, Butch's future took a vastly different path, and it's one that's defined by overcoming adversity and living a life of service.

In 1967, Butch moved to Florida with $300 in his pocket. He owed $1,300. He began working for his father-in-law's fencing company in Orlando before moving to Bradenton, where he would begin his journey to become a Manatee County business mogul all his own.

Butch, his then-wife, son, and brother-inlaw, moved into a 900 square foot space where they opened the first Bradenton branch of American Steel Fencing. They lived and worked out of the same small structure. After a few short years of hard work and cramped living, USA Fence was born.

USA Fence is the embodiment of a true family company. Butch's sons, Shannon and Cody, work for the business, as do Shannon's nephews, Link and Beau.

But regardless of blood relation, the Glasgows speak of all their employees as though they're family. At 80 years old, Butch offers ornate stories about many of his workers' lives, remembering the names of their children and loved ones with crystalline precision. "He comes to work every day and never stops. He thinks like the 53-year-old, and I think like the 80-year-old." Shannon giggled with a proud grin.

Butch proved to be a savvy businessman, and USA grew quickly despite his

lack of traditional schooling. Their first expansion came through a partnership with a roofing company that quickly absorbed gutter services. "My dad figured out a long time ago that if you start the week with $100, you're broke on Friday. But if you buy or rent something, you're still broke on Friday, but you have something to rent or sell." Shannon said.

Since taking on roofing, Butch's business wisdom has fostered many partnerships and additional services—from real estate to car sales, barricade rentals, accounting, banking, pawnshops, dumpsters, and demolition, to name a few. It seems whenever the Glasgow's had a need for a service, they chose to take it on in-house

rather than outsource, allowing them to grow into much more than just a fencing company. This eye for self-sufficiency is no doubt born from a humble upbringing and has certainly been passed on to the family's younger generation.

"There's no secret. My dad just worked hard and continues to. I mean, it literally is the American dream." Shannon said, "There's always a need or an opportunity.

When the economy was bad in 2009, we were short on dumpsters, so we purchased a dumpster company. We thought, we have the overhead, we have the people, let's get in the dumpster business and just service our customers and sell on price."

The Glasgow's growth and "can do" attitude has resulted in a company that employs approximately 70-80 full-time employees and about 35 sub-contractors.

They put particular emphasis on ensuring that their team members are appreciated for their efforts, "The hardest thing for a company of our size, or any size, is to give your employees proper recognition.

It's very important to Anna, my assistant, or Burt if they have one, or two, or three years with us, to be recognized on their anniversary for being here that long." Butch says as he gestures to Anna and Burt bustling in the hallway. USA's sphere of support doesn't end with their workforce. In

February of 2016, the Glasgow Foundation was born, and its branch sits directly on top of the Glasgow tree.

USA Fence has been a friend to the Manatee County community from the start, and as their philanthropic efforts grew, so did their need for a new rung in the ladder. Philanthropy is a business in itself, and the Glasgow's approach it with the same tenacity that has powered their other ventures.

Each year they sponsor as many as 30 Little League teams in Manatee County.

"We sponsor the teams for the smaller kids. When it's T-ball, mom comes, dad comes, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles. I grew up doing Little League, my nieces and nephews participated.

Not only is it an inexpensive advertising opportunity, but it's also a great way to give back to the community." Shannon said. Other contributions to our county's youth include a partnership with former children's group home, Our Family Ranch, and heavy involvement with the Conquistador Historical Foundation, which offers scholarships, pen-pal programs, and many other charitable services within the community.

"I'm smart enough to know that youth is our only future in America."

-Butch Glasgow When speaking with Butch and Shannon, it becomes apparent that they're not at all boastful. They each display a matter-of-fact attitude when it comes to their altruistic endeavors, and one gets the sense that you'd be better off asking those around them to get a full picture of all the good USA is actually doing behind the scenes. Beyond the sponsorships and donations, there are small clues peppered throughout the conversation that allude to the depth of their generosity. "I remember one year, they put a dumpster out by the horse barn

with a sign that said, 'community use for spring cleaning.' I couldn't believe how thoughtful it was!" said a former neighbor.

Butch has lowered rent for some in times of strife—though he'll deny it.

He's provided services and assistance to employees and their families when needed. More importantly, he's offered his kindness and attention to those around him and our fellow residents.

As an avid collector of everything from clocks to cars to canes (you name it!), Butch has fashioned himself a museum of sorts known as TOI, or Things of Interest, to house some of his beloved possessions.

He will never charge admission and hopes to begin hosting classroom field trips soon. His enthusiasm to share his success and the things that bring him joy with others is palpable. It truly is about the journey for him, and there are no signs of it slowing any time soon.

"My dad came from nothing.

He always wants to support the community. He likes the underdog.

The one that was down because he was down. He always wants to try to give everyone a leg-up. Manatee County has been good to us, and we truly believe you give back to where you come from."

A Greek Love Story…

The history behind Popi and her places!

P

opi's Place Family Restaurant in Ellenton is a cozy, diner-style restaurant known for its homecooked meals and friendly service. It is one of five Popi's restaurants currently owned and run by the Ameres family. It is truly a family-run business in every sense and proudly advertised as "one of the few remaining Florida restaurants that is cheffamily owned and operated (since 1983)".

The original owners, Emmanuel and Popi, have four children and eight grandchildren, and everyone old enough is involved in making the family business a success.

But it is Popi and Emmanuel's story that truly captivated me. A Greek love story turned American dream.

Emmanuel Ameres was already a Chef in the Greek Navy when he met Kalliopi (Popi) on the Greek island of Leros in 1969. Emmanuel, or Manny, originally from the island of Karthapos, was stationed at a Naval base on Popi's home island of Leros. They first began just seeing each other around the island. She would follow him, and he would follow her. At one point, Popi's brother, Mike, befriended Emmanuel and invited him back to their house.

Popi was only 14 at that time, and Emmanuel had plans to go to the United States with his brother, but he knew Popi was "the one," so he promised to come back for her. After serving his time of one year in the Greek Navy, he went to Popi's mother, Katina, and asked for her hand in marriage. He explained that he was going to America, but he would be back in five years to marry Popi. In secret, he told Popi that he would be back for her in two years.

Manny left for America on May 10th, 1969, and was back exactly one year later to marry Popi on May 10th of 1970. On June 7th, 1970, they were married when Popi was just 16 years old. After three months in Athens getting the proper paperwork for Popi, they left together for New York and then on to Cleveland, Ohio.

Emmanuel worked for The Brown Derby restaurant in Ohio, and Popi was able to get a job there as well. Although she started as a custodian, cleaning and washing dishes, within just a few years, she was able to work her way up to a Chef's position as well, which was nearly unheard of at that time.

The promise of a partnership in a Brown Derby restaurant in Clearwater, Florida, is what originally brought them to the sunshine state in the early 1970s. When that did not work out, Popi and the Ameres brothers started their own restaurant called The Grape Vines. Although the restaurant was successful, it was difficult to support all the families.

So, they opened the 7 Seas restaurant.

Another success, but not as profitable as they had hoped, so while Emmanuel kept that restaurant running, Popi and Emmanuel's brother Gus opened Old Town Café. Eventually, through hard work and long hours, sometimes starting at 4:00 am and not ending until 1:00 am, Emmanuel and Popi were able to go out on their own and open the original Popi's Place next to what is known today as Lecom Park.

After leaving her family at age 16, Popi was only able to talk to her mother about once a month. This was very difficult for a young teenage girl, not just in a new home but in a new country. It wasn't until 26

seven years later that Popi returned home to Greece and saw her mother, now with three children in tow. When she recalls her first trip home and her first sight of the lighthouse on Leros, she remembers being so taken with emotion that she was unable to even speak.

I had the privilege of visiting the Popi's location in Ellenton, which is run by Popi and Emmanuel with the help of their daughter Katina. Although the restaurant seems perpetually busy, the wait was short, and customers were all seated and greeted promptly. We opted for a comfy green booth by the window, but there is also diner-style counter seating, if you prefer, with no waiting.

The menu is extensive, starting with three pages of breakfast options, served until 3:00 pm daily, offering everything from Omelets, French toast, and breakfast sandwiches to Popi's Famous Chicken Biscuit Breakfast.

The lunch and dinner menus include soups, salads, sandwiches, and some Italian entrees, steaks, chops, and seafood. You will find a few Greek specialties like Spanakopita (spinach pie) and a fresh Greek Salad topped with Popi's homemade Greek dressing (which she bottles and is available for purchase in the Popi's restaurants and in local stores like Detwiler's). When asked what her specialty is, Popi said, "Everything is special," but

she is particularly proud of her Lemon Chicken Rice soup.

Everything is chef-made in the restaurants, using the highest quality ingredients. Fresh eggs and dairy come from Sutters, a local farm, and the bread comes from a local bakery in Bradenton.

But it is not just the food quality or quantity that makes Popi's Place special. Popi's is a staple in the community, and both the family and the staff are very involved. "The community takes care of us, and we try to take care of them," said daughter-in-law Jennifer Ameres. "Many of our customers have become friends and family. Some even dine with us seven days a week." And according to Jennifer, they are now serving their fourth generation of customers and getting to know the grandchildren and even the great-grandchildren of some of the original patrons.

Even the employees have become like family in many cases. There is a server that has worked at Popi's for more than 23 years, and there are now children of some of their family of staff members that work at Popi's as well.

Many attribute the restaurant's success, at least in part, to the generosity of the Ameres family. Popi and Emmanuel are very charitable people, giving of their time, food, and talents whenever needed, and they taught their children to be the same.

They have been known to bring food to families who have fallen on hard times and regularly make donations to churches, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Palmetto Police Department, and local hospitals.

They coach soccer teams and make a presence at many charitable events, like the Empty Bowls event, where you can sample Popi's famous Lemon Chicken soup every year.

Popi's also offers catering for weddings and other events. You will likely see them serving more than 15,000 people in just three days at the Greek Glendi at the Greek Orthodox church in February each year.

oaring, breathing dinosaurs have come to life at The Bishop's DinoVenture exhibit. This outdoor exhibition sponsored by Mosaic and Bradenton Area Arts & Culture - will transport visitors back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous Period — when T. rexes were apex predators and the kings of the Earth. Explore among the 27 lifelike animatronic dinosaurs complete with waterproof silicon skin and electronic brains that control every flick of a tail and every blink of an eye. The dinosaurs in DinoVenture were created by Don Lessem, the dinosaur advisor on Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, who is known worldwide for his dinosaur expertise.

THE GIVING TREE 2021!

T

he Play and Learning Strategies (PALS) team at the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County had their 4th Annual Giving Tree during the holiday season to spread some much-needed cheer to families in our community. This year, 27 families in the PALS and Operation W.I.T (Whatever It Takes) programs asked for assistance providing Christmas gifts for their children.

ELC staff, along with local businesses and people in the community, helped by "adopting" a child or family for Christmas and providing them with presents. Every child on the Giving Tree was adopted, which meant 59 children received gifts this year.

The Bradenton CBD Store, the Kiwanis Club of North Manatee, and AAA Florida helped us with this event, adopting children and purchasing gifts for our PALS and WIT families. The families were so grateful for the warmth and kindness that the local community and ELC showed them and their children and shared some "Thank You" notes with us.

ELC AWARDED $36,0 0 0 FOR NEW STEAM MACHINE!

he Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) has been awarded $36,000 in grants from The Selby Foundation and PNC Bank to create a new STEAM Machine mobile classroom that will increase its educational fleet to six vehicles.

The new STEAM Machine will have disabled access and be retrofitted from a school bus donated to ELC by the School District of Manatee County. The $30,000 Selby Foundation grant, and $6000 award from PNC Bank, will contribute towards the exterior and interior buildout, custom wrap, and high-end technology that delivers an amazing learning experience to local children.

Paul Sharff, ELC Chief Executive Officer, said: "Our organization is so grateful for the support of The Selby Foundation and PNC Bank. These investments will allow us to introduce even more Manatee County students to this valuable STEAM learning tool.

When students take part in activities that combine different elements of STEAM, they develop problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, planning, and observation skills under the umbrella of the creative process. Once again, we would

also like to thank Superintendent Saunders for her support in donating a school bus that was being decommissioned – this is the second time the District has given us a bus, and we truly appreciate our partnership with them as we work hand in hand to support early education."

The STEAM curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. ELC's STEAM curriculum engages early learners in real projects within authentic environments and lays the academic groundwork for math and science.

E

very holiday season comes with an abundance of special events and opportunities to impact our community.

This year you may have seen Early Learning Coalition (ELC) team members at Christmas in Cortez, The Night Before Christmas at GT Bray, Hometown Christmas, and various other parades and family events. These events are special to so many families and children because it is a time in which we can connect and create memories.

In December, more than 4000 books of varying holiday themes and winter fun were distributed to the children of Manatee County.

Our team of bus drivers were excited to bring out our famous fleet of educational vehicles, or our “sleighs” that were used for special deliveries. Each of our child care providers had a bus come by their site, which saw the children smile and jump for joy when we arrived!

ELC get the books ready. Our volunteers brought smiles, stories, and holiday cheer each day they came to help. Their dedication shone as they stayed for a few hours a day and did not want to leave until every book was labelled. They were thrilled at the part they play in helping us provide so many books to so many local children.

We are deeply grateful for their hard work and could not have distributed such an enormous number of books without them.

A huge thank you to the Volunteers of America from all of us at ELC - and from all the children in Manatee County!

Every book that comes into the ELC is labelled with our signature sticker. This sticker not only represents our dedication to literacy but provides an opportunity for families to connect with us in more ways than one with QR codes and parent reading tips.

Labeling the books is a huge task – so thank goodness for the amazing Volunteers of America group that we have help! During November, many volunteers took time out of their day to help

Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Program Fact Sheet for Families Overview If you have a child who will soon be 4 years old, then you know how curious she is or how much he may already know. Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is a free high-quality education program for 4-year-olds living in Florida – to prepare them for success in school and in life. VPK helps build a strong foundation for school using educational materials appropriate for different stages in your child’s development.

What are the eligibility requirements for VPK? Children must live in Florida and be 4 years old on or before September 1 of the current year to be eligible. Families with children born between February 2 and September 1 have the option to postpone enrolling their 4- year-old until the following year when their child is 5.

How do I apply for VPK? You can apply online from a computer, mobile phone or other digital device by visiting www.familyservices.floridaearlylearning.com. You will need an email address, proof of Florida residency and proof of your child’s age to apply.

Your local early learning coalition will review your application and email you with further instructions. Once your application is approved, the coalition will provide you with a Certificate of Eligibility you can take to any VPK provider.

VPK Program Options Private, public and charter schools, private childcare centers and specialized instructional services providers may offer VPK. Parents can select from one of several program options available from private and public providers.

VPK School-Year Program: 540 instructional hours

Specialized Instructional Services Program: Hours vary based on services provided

VPK Summer Program: 300 Instructional Hours

Class sizes are not to exceed 11 students with a single lead instructor or up to 20 students with a lead instructor and an assistant. Instructors must have a minimum of a Florida Child Care Professional Credential.

VPK Specialized Instructional Services (SIS) is a program option available for VPK-age children with current individualized educational plans (IEPs). Helping Kids and Families Navigate Step-Parenting…

W

hen writing about or working with a blended family, it's tempting to say that there's a one-size-fits-all scenario of "how to stepparent" that will apply across the board to everyone. However, it's just not so with all of the nuances we must consider in stepparenting like personality, background, and more.

That said, after almost two decades of practice in working with blended families, I can tell you there are indeed some ways to make sure stepparenting goes well in your family's life. To help you swim, not sink in the waters of raising these precious kids in your life together. The truth is, despite the storms and stresses of raising kids, overall, there is a lot of joy that can be found.

Generally, despite the cultural misnomers found in movies where

stepparents are wicked, I find that both parents and stepparents alike do genuinely want to succeed, nurture, and have healthy behaviors develop so the kids can navigate well later, on their own!

Check out these ten tips for blended families if you want to be more of a secure anchor and a compass before your kid's set sail on their own!

1. Get self-care. Whether you are a parent, stepparent, or

both, don't expect your spouse to meet all of your needs.

They are not only busy navigating two family systems and often work also along with you. You both need physical outlets such as workout systems, best friends to talk to, a group of caring adults to hang with, a pastor, or a therapist

you can chat with. These individuals and outlets help you voice your concerns and make sure your needs are met, especially in times of murky waters.

2. Schedule one-on-one time with the parent and the child/

ren so they can still have some time without the stepparent around. This goes for the time before and after marriage.

The infatuation of two adults with one another in a new relationship can sometimes force the fact that a child's transition to a new partner in the home may not be as easy or welcome. This is a home they will grow up and move out from one day, and they did not choose this person. That said, bedtime routines, rides to school solo, and most especially, setting aside a one-to-one date once per month with your child/ren is a fantastic way to show them they still get some time with you.

3. Don't give up on trying to find a healthy communication system. Communicate within the family. Make sure every adult and child's voice is heard. Family meetings are usually big wins for assuring this. Just make sure everyone has a voice, and a clear action step after the meeting is over. This means adults have to be willing to communicate even if it's uncomfortable.

4. Communicate across families. If you are a parent of a

child and their other parent or stepparent won't meet with you or speak, keep encouraging healthy communication.

Children don't settle well if they're worried about the adults not speaking to one another, and trust me when I say they imagine all kinds of scary scenarios about being abandoned when they feel tension. In other words, don't just let things wash over the family. Be loving and kind to the other adult (even if it's hard) but also firm about healthy communication together. I recommend seeing a family therapist or coach if this gets tough.

5. Allow for stepparent and child bonding. Make sure the

stepparent and the children in the system communicate and build a bond before discipline is given. Even if the stepparent feels a little like this is new territory, it's not typically difficult to bond with children except in the case of severe attachment issues, which requires a mental health advocate. In other cases, make sure you do prioritize it.

Do some "non-stress" activities together, such as taking a walk with no agenda other than to connect, throwing a ball back and forth, shopping, or going to lunch or dinner. Some stepfamilies have a group text just for the stepparent and children to bond, and it's helpful as it helps them feel it's less of a competition. Make sure a stepparent feels loved in their unique way on Mother's and Father's Day and that kids show respect.

6. Give them an anchored home with you. Also, make sure a

stepparent who feels unstable in the relationship doesn't just leave the kids even if there's a marital crisis and a separation is desired. Kids get attached more than either of you may

realize, and they don't want to feel abandoned any more than you want to make them feel that way. Make sure you're aware that they're aware of non-verbal actions that may make them feel less secure, and try to help them to feel less anxious by communicating in safe, non-threatening ways.

7. Have family meetings. Better yet, when you have them,

don't bad mouth their other parents or stepparents not present. The concept that their other parent is "bad" typically hurts a child more than helps as they know they are part of that person and often wonder about themselves in negative ways or will do so down the road. Don't make a child feel like they're a ping-pong ball - that's not what you want for their development. Instead, just focus on the rules at your house.

8. Create safety and request that things are safe at the other home and be willing to fight for it otherwise. Talk to the parent via text, call, or the court system. In all of this, continually remind yourself that in most cases, this person truly will be needed in their children's life, all of that child's life, even if it's for the simple things later in life. Try to help and not hurt that relationship. Another reason to help and not hurt that relationship is that children often feel like they're an annoyance or the cause of their parents' issues. It can create some dark feelings, even suicidal tendencies, when hormones kick in.

9. Set rules about technology. Don't let the kids just live on their phones and devices. Just because your adult relationship did not make it, it does not mean you need to pass on parenting or that you are a failure. Have rules about when cell phones are turned in at night and show some boundaries, self-respect, and respect for a child's growing brain. They need sleep and even if they're missing the other parent, make sure you set limits about extensive usage of devices. Offer the kids some reasonable amount of privacy. There are many great therapists in the area if a child is struggling with severe anxiety and many other tools besides devices to comfort them.

10.Make sure you're dealing with your marriage issues now. It can feel insurmountable at times to have children's issues, issues with an ex, and then when the honeymoon period is over, to have issues with one another as a couple now too. Take a deep breath. These issues are normal. Make sure you're normalizing conflict with one another and the kids since, after all, everyone disagrees about some things. It's also important for you to keep learning about each other.

Lean in and be curious versus condemning as you work on your marriage issues.

Lastly, remember that this is a learning curve and worth attending to. These are your people. They are your tribe. Fight for it with love for you and them!

A PATHWAY TO PROMISE

United Way CIO is a driving force behind the Early Literacy push.

W

ith a great appreciation of books instilled in her as a child, Bronwyn Beightol recognized the power of literacy early on. She still remembers her father's reading voice, the sound of him turning the pages of their latest mystery novel, and even the smell of a new book opened for the first time. It was the love of the written word she carried with her throughout her career.

Now the Chief Impact Officer at United Way Suncoast, which covers a five-county region, Beightol is committed to improving early literacy, working to greatly reduce the number of children reading below grade level in on our most vulnerable communities by 2026. An effort she believes is the "pathway to promise," or the key to opening the future for generations.

"When we talk about promoting reading, we're also talking about promoting education and the ability for students to solve problems and create the life they imagine for themselves."

The initiative is a collaborative approach that includes a number of community partners serving diverse populations, including The Early Learning Coalitions, Boys and Girls Clubs, and even Meals on Wheels. In Manatee County, United Way Suncoast focuses on school readiness supports like access to quality early education, engagement activities for community spaces, and reading rooms for families living in low-income housing. The organization also funds in-school supports

like paraprofessionals and mentors to instill a love of reading in young children.

Recognizing the Need Beightol worked with United Way for 13 years before being promoted to her current role with United Way Suncoast.

During her tenure with United Way of Manatee County, her team launched a community-driven information campaign, holding town hall meetings and speaking to more than 400 leaders from all walks of life about their future goals and aspirations.

Together, they identified equitable access to quality education as the top necessity.

The feedback led to the launch of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading in Manatee County. Thanks to the leadership of The Patterson Foundation, this is now 63

it a positive spin as "pipeline to promise," which she explains is about growing children for their future and focusing on the positive outcomes of children who meet benchmarks, graduate on time and fill jobs in the community.

The grade-level reading initiative, which includes Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties, couldn't have come at a better time. In 2017-18, United Way reported that 75 percent of children at 10 Manatee County Title I schools were not reading at grade level by the end of third grade (delete five percent increase).

"If you think about it, our entire community ecosystem relies on reading. It improves high school graduation rates and provides a more reliable workforce," she said. "If you're looking around the class and you don't understand the material, that's when thoughts of dropping out begin; they begin at nine years old." the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a four-county movement in Manatee, Sarasota, DeSoto, and Charlotte counties. It's a collaborative approach to increase reading proficiency by third grade.

"There was incredible work going on, but nobody had taken a step back to see how our children were doing overall or establish a protocol to measure their success," she said. "We decided grade-level reading was a good way to do that as it's one of the most important benchmarks."

Beightol said third grade is a significant target because, until that point, students are still learning to read, but afterward, they are reading to learn. By the end of 64

United Way Suncoast's "Big Plan" addresses the issue by focusing on 10 Title One schools in Manatee County, schools with a large percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch. United Way invests in other local agencies that provide educational materials, mentoring, parenting classes, and af ter-school engagement activities for students.

A Focus on Diversity Equity and Inclusion Beightol is committed to equity and views literacy as a socioeconomic issue. She's re-imagined the negative slogan "pipeline to prison," instead of giving it a positive spin as "pipeline of promise," instead of giving

One of the programs aimed at children with limited access to early education is the establishment of community reading rooms. United Way set up two at La Mirada Gardens Apartments and Bradenton Village Apartments, with plans to expand to more housing developments in the near future. These reading rooms provide resources and education for parents with activities they can do with their children to promote developmental milestones.

Beightol's favorite success story occurred at the La Mirada reading room. A fouryear-old boy, Maison, who never had access to books at home, read 44 in the summer before kindergarten. Not only did he develop the skills he needed to thrive in kindergarten and beyond, but he also exposed his siblings and family members to the resources, changing the trajectory of the family's future.

United Way has also been addressing ALICE (Asset, Limited, Income, Constrained, Employed), or families with income above the Federal Poverty Line that earn too much to qualify for benefits but are still unable to cover basic household expenses in the counties where they live. ver the Winter Break, I took my children out to a local park to capture outdoor Holiday Photos. The pictures really turned out great, and as I was starting to brainstorm a craft for Valentine’s, I thought these would make a nice addition to a gift.

Up-to-date photos are always appreciated by my family.

After looking at the usual craft supplies and coming across a small decorative container at a dollar store, I decided my daughter and I would put together a Photo and Pen Holder for Valentine’s Day. If you would like to make this affordable and functional craft with your family, this is what you will need: • • • • • • • •

Pictures of Child/Children Red, Pink, or Purple foam sheets Piece of scrap paper Pencil Pen Craft sticks Flat marbles Container (could be an upcycled can, plastic cup, or small mason jar) • Safety scissors • Glue Tip: You can find most of these items at a craft store.

DIRECTIONS: To get started, first fold the scrap paper in half and use the pencil to draw the half side of a heart. Make this about 1 ½ inches long. Then use the scissors to cut out the shape. You may need to adjust the heart size based on the photo you are using.

Then, take this heart shape and again trace this on top of the foam sheets using the pencil. My daughter decided to make a pink heart and two red hearts and cut them out. If you are only using one photo, you can also make two extra foam hearts to glue together for additional craft sticks.

She then wrote the words on the three foam hearts, “We” “Love” “You.” FYI, feel free to change the “We” to “I” if this is a gift from one child.

Next, take the pen and trace the heart on top of the child’s photo to make a heart shape to be glued on top of the foam.

Cut this out.

Tip: Order a few of the same picture just in case you make a mistake or don’t like placement when you cut it out.

ating meals together just might be the ultimate parenting hack. What else can you do in an hour that will improve your kids' academic performance, increase their selfesteem, and reduce their risk of substance abuse, depression, teen pregnancy, and obesity?

Over the last two decades, study after study has shown that simply taking a few minutes each day to turn off screens and genuinely connect with each other over food can improve the physical and mental health of all family members involved.

Want proof? Here's some of the most recent research showing the benefits of eating together as a family.

1. It teaches your kids better-eating habits. A

recent study in JAMA Network Open shows that eating meals with family members is associated with a better diet overall, especially among adolescents. Teens who ate with family were more likely to consume more fruits and vegetables and less fast food and sugary beverages. These findings apply regardless of how functional or dysfunctional a family is, according to the study.

2. It can prevent serious psychosocial issues.

In other words, according to a 2015 review by a group of Canadian researchers, frequent family dinners can prevent issues with eating disorders, alcohol and substance use, violent behavior, depression, and suicidal thoughts in adolescents.

Young female study participants were especially likely to reap the benefits of family meals.

3. It can curtail weight struggles in adulthood. A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found a direct

correlation between the frequency of shared family meals in adolescence and reduced odds of obesity or weight issues ten years later, especially among black teens. The study concludes that families should attempt to gather for at least one or two meals each week to help protect their kids from weight struggles later in life.

4. It can improve children's self-esteem. The security provided

by regularly breaking bread as a family can help children feel more confident in themselves, according to experts at Stanford Children's Health, a pediatric healthcare

system affiliated with Stanford Medicine and Stanford University. By encouraging your children to talk about their day (and genuinely listening to their responses), you're communicating that you value and respect who they are.

Children should be allowed to choose their own seats and encouraged to assist with chores associated with dinnertime, whether setting the table, serving the food or cleaning up.

5. It improves communication skills. A 2018 Canadian study that

followed a group of children from infancy through childhood found that participants whose families had positive meal experiences at age 6 showed a range of positive benefits by age 10. Besides general health and fitness, the social interaction and discussions of current issues at the table can make kids better communicators, noted the study's supervisor, Université de Montréal psychoeducation professor Linda Pagani, in a Science Daily interview.

In addition, families can be encouraged to take lessons learned during therapy to the dinner table, experimenting with new roles and communication patterns.

6. It can help kids bounce back from cyberbullying. Research published in JAMA Pediatrics, based on a survey of nearly 19,000 students, found clear associations between

Yogurt is a popular first food all around the world. It is a nutritious option because it contains calcium, protein, and healthy fat.

Incorporating healthy fat options like yogurt into your baby's diet will help develop their brain cells and offer probiotics that help build a strong microbiome. Recent studies have demonstrated a connection between our gut and brain. Plus, babies tend to like the rich, creamy texture of Greek yogurt.

2. Avocado

Creamy, mashed avocado is a popular first food. Avocado is a nutrient-dense fruit with healthy fat, vitamins, and minerals. Not only is it nutritious, as the healthy fats contribute to brain cell development, but the texture is soft and easy for babies to tolerate.

3. Cheese

Small soft cheeses are often introduced early, depending on your baby's readiness, because they're lighter in taste and texture.

Cottage cheese is an easy offering: your baby can eat it as a finger food, or it can be mixed with a vegetable or fruit.

4. Whole Grain Porridge

Offering your baby a whole-grain cereal blend is a nutritious option. Whole grains such as oatmeal, quinoa, and barley should be pulverized and blended into a fine powder form, and boiled with water. Once cooked, mix it with breast milk, yogurt, or a fruit/ vegetable blend. Whole grains offer fiber and a source of protein.

5. Eggs

Egg whites should not be introduced until 12 months due to their higher risk as an allergen, but egg yolks are surprisingly nutritious and easy to digest.

Egg yolks contain cholesterol, which is what comprises the outer lining of brain cells. In addition, they contain fat-soluble vitamins as well as choline, selenium, and Vitamin B12 - all important for organ development.

6. Nut Butters

Traditional nuts in their butter form are a good source of healthy fat, protein, and fat-soluble vitamins. Peanut, cashew, and almond butter are all options to offer your baby when you feel they're ready.

You could offer it as a small spoonful mixed into your baby's cereal or porridge blend, yogurt, or even applesauce. As more public environments become "nut aware," there is increased popularity among sunflower seed butter, a.k.a. sun butter. Sunflower Butter is free from the top eight food allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, eggs, wheat, fish, and crustacean shellfish.

7. Apples

These nutritious fruits contain quercetin, which helps stimulate brain activity. Apples are easy to offer as a first food and throughout your baby's transitional food stages. As they become more comfortable with finger foods and as they develop teeth, you could offer apples with nut butter as a healthy pairing.

8. Lentils

Lentils are available in various forms and are especially nutritious because they contain fiber, iron, and protein. They're soft and easy to cook (no soaking required) and can easily be blended into puree or soup form. They're also one of the lighter legume and bean options to initially offer.

9. Leafy Greens

While these may be hard to offer initially as a single vegetable, they could be used as a blend, so they're tolerated better. For example, you could blend spinach with apple or carrots. Because many leafy greens contain nitrates, it is often recommended as a later introduction at perhaps closer to 10 months onwards.

Leafy greens such as spinach or kale offer lutein and Vitamin K, contributing to positive brain activity.

10. Salmon

Babies' growing brains require DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is essential to cognitive development. Salmon is an excellent dietary source of DHA. You could mash some cooked, mix into a puree or even create a salmon burger or nuggets if finger foods are accepted.

INGREDIENTS

• 6 cup oats, dry • 1/4 cup

macaroni 1 cup heavy cream 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3/4 cup parmesan cheese Salt & pepper to taste Sriracha sauce (optional)

PREPARATION 1. In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil.

Cook pasta in boiling water according to package instructions.

2. While pasta is cooking, heat cream in a heavy saucepan or cast-iron skillet over medium heat until the cream begins to bubble. Add in the cheeses along with some salt and pepper. Stir cheese sauce until bubbly, and the cheese has melted, 5-7 minutes stirring often.

3. Once the noodles are cooked, add the drained pasta to the cheese sauce and stir until combined.

4. If desired, top with a heavy dose of sriracha sauce.

PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

2. Mix oats and brown sugar together.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, honey, and vanilla.

4. Pour over the dry mixture and stir to coat thoroughly. Add in desired toppings.

5. Spread on the baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.

6. Stir frequently (every 5 minutes) to ensure even baking.

7. Let it cool on the baking sheet, and then break up any large pieces. Stir in the dried fruit and coconut if used.

Our world continues to change, and finding a semblance of normalcy seems almost out of the question. However, we can empower ourselves to prioritize one thing: our mental health.

In 2022, the Women's Resource Center will launch two programs that focus on improving your mindset. "Trust in Transformation," a weekly support group led by Dr. Judy Sedgeman, an educational psychologist, will be held weekly via Zoom. And "You Are Worthy" is an eight-week series moderated

by Chris Florand and Denise Whalin. This inperson series is at WRC's Sarasota location on 340 S. Tuttle Ave. In "Trust in Transformation," Dr. Judy Sedgeman, who has more than 30 years of experience as a mental health mentor, will explore building resilience in the face of trauma, adversity, and other life stresses.

As much as resilience involves "bouncing back" from difficult experiences, it can also lead to profound personal growth.

"Participants will explore our natural intuitive capacity to transcend circumstances, understand our power to think as the gift of a continual fresh start, and recognize how to navigate our own states of mind," says Sedgeman. This program, offered via Zoom, meets every Tuesday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is a one-time fee of $10 to join the group.

Global education nonprofit HundrED recently recognized Remake Learning Days Across America as one of the world’s brightest innovations in K-12 education. Through its engagement in the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, our region is one of 16 communities invited to participate in this national program with the generous support of The Patterson Foundation.

he n stude nts have trouble relating to the material they’re learning, it’s harder for them to understand and apply it both in and out of the classroom. Experiential learning, the process of learning through experience, solves this by making concepts and data more tangible by applying them to handson projects with real-life results. It involves trial by error, accelerating and improving attitudes toward learning — effectively bridging the gap between theory and practice in a manner that resonates with students on a deeper level.

The Suncoast is blessed with a plethora of experiential learning opportunities — including many that remain untapped.

Developing opportunities to connect with these opportunities has the potential to

broaden their use while creating shared learning experiences for children and families in our region.

That’s why the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is bringing the globally recognized Remake Learning Days program to our region in 2022. Beginning Friday, April 29, and running through Sunday, May 8, Suncoast Remake Learning Days is a 10-day festival that will feature innovative experiences and opportunities for youth to develop their sense of creativity, perseverance, and curiosity.

Remake Learning Days Across America (RLDAA) events take place in communities nationwide. During Remake Learning Days, a variet y of organizations — schools, museums, libraries, after school organizations, early child care centers,

xperts recommend that kids get no more than one to two hours of TV/computer/video games a day. But did you know that the average eight-year-old spends eight hours a day using various forms of media, and teenagers often get more than 11 hours of media a day?

You know your kids need to watch less TV or put down their devices, but you're dreading the screaming, yelling, and crying that may follow, telling them to get up and do something. First and foremost, remember YOU are the parent. It's your job to set healthy limits. We know it's not easy, but it's important for their health and well-being. And each child is different, so what works for one child may not work for another.

Here are some ideas about how to limit your family's sedentary time:

1. Identify free times for activity during the week. Make time to get the whole family moving.

2. Plan to add physical activity to your daily routine. Be

prepared to offer age-appropriate alternatives to TV or video games after school. Make physical activity a regular part of your family's schedule. Write it on a weekly calendar for the whole family.

3. Be active with your kids. Experts say that what kids want more

than anything else is time with their parents. To give them that, don't just send them out to play - go play with them! Develop a set of activities for you and your family that are always available regardless of the weather.

4. Limit TV, computer, smartphone, and video game time.

Don't position your furniture, so the TV is the main focus of the room. Don't allow kids to have televisions or video game devices in their bedrooms. And avoid using TV time as a reward or punishment.

5. Plan TV watching in advance. Pick the shows you want to watch. Turn the TV on for only those shows and turn it off afterward. Don't just watch whatever comes on next.

6. Practice what you preach. Your kids won't accept being

restricted to two hours of screen time if you can veg out for four hours. The best way to influence your kids' behavior is by being a good role model.

All of these might sound easy enough; they just take a little thought and a lot of practice. Do what you can as often as you can.

Here are some ideas that your kids can do on their own, or the whole family can do together:

You can do it! Be strong, have a plan, and don't back down. Your child's health is worth fighting for.

Ligh tning Hits The Water!

T

he L akewood Ranch Swim Association, or LRSA “Lightning,” began in 2004 as a co-ed summer recreational program at the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center and has blossomed into a year-round competitive USA swim team and a proud member of Florida Swimming, Inc. In fact, in 2021, more than 20 kids on the team qualified for the AAU Junior

A few team members even placed in the top 10, like 13-year-old Molly Braybrook, 12-year-old Kim Ley Meislahn, and 14-yearold Danielle Weathers.

Behind every great team, you will usually find great leaders, which certainly seems to be the case with the Lighting. This team of mentors includes Head Coach Steve

Lubrino, Coach Amanda, Assistant Coach Amy, and Coach Jacob.

Head Coach Steve, also the Lakewood Ranch High School swim team coach, has been the Head Coach of the Lightning for several years. When he took over, the Lightning was a team of only 45 kids, and now he leads a team of 140 kids with a waitlist. Although it is still a small team in comparison to their competition, many of

which have 300 to 400 kids on a team, a surprising number of swimmers place in the top 25 consistently in the USA Swimming sanctioned swim meets they compete in. Coach Steve would love to continue to grow the team but understands that pool space is limited, and so for now, they are at their capacity.

Coach Steve is not just a hero to his swim team; he is a hero to our country. A transplant from Brooklyn, New York, and a retired New York City Fire Officer, Steve is a survivor of the collapse of the world trade center and the horrific events of 9/11. If his background has molded his coaching style in any way, it seems to have contributed to the relaxed and laid-back coaching style he is known for. He prefers to train with the stress on technique, and he doesn’t believe in yelling, stating: “It doesn’t get the kids anywhere but frustrated. Each team member has a different personality, and they all require lots of nurturing.”

Coach Amanda has been swimming competitively since she was eight years old. And after relocating to Florida from her home state of Pennsylvania, she continued to swim and competed on the Southeast High School Swim Team. She is ASCA Level 2 certified and coaches the silver and gold levels.

Assistant Coach A my also star ted swimming at a very young age and was team captain of her high school swim team both her junior and senior years.

She has been coaching the Lightning for two years, is ASCA Level 2 certified, and is responsible for new swimmer evaluations and making sure each swimmer is placed at the proper level.

Coach Jacob swam with the Lightning for several years and has been coaching the team since December 2020.

One of the main draws of this team is its laid-back atmosphere and the fact that, as a smaller team, there is a sense of family to it. And while they are a serious and competitive swim team, they also like to have fun. They have contests and run relays regularly, just to mix it up. Each year the coaches like to create a Polar Bear challenge, where each swimmer 92

clinics dedicated to speed or a particular stroke. And, according to Coach Steve, any encouragement and advice coming from another coach is always a good thing.

who does not miss a day of practice during the challenge gets their name on the Polar Bear Challenge T-shirt. During the holidays, they exchange secret Santa gifts and wear swim caps provided to the team, depicting the recognized colors of individual holidays, like Halloween, Christmas, and the 4th of July.

It is evident how much Coach Steve, and the entire coaching team, care about the swimmers personally. They seem to know each of the 140 team members by name and age, and they even know many of their parents and siblings. And Coach Steve recognizes that the kids have other demands on their time. Some have family responsibilities, and some are also in other sports or even have jobs. It won’t be a problem if another commitment means that you need to leave early now and then or miss an occasional practice.

“The team is whatever you make of it,” Steve acknowledges. “Some have dreams

of making the Olympic team, others are hoping for a college scholarship, and some just want to be part of a team. There are even several team members that just want to swim. I just want them to do their best and work hard when they are here.”

Coach Amanda added: “Everyone is improving, and they all seem happy to be really here.” The “Elite” swimmers swim as much as five to six days a week, and many are among the group hoping for scholarships, while divisions two and three have fewer demands.

The Lightning is the only competitive swim team in Lakewood Ranch and possibly in Manatee County. Swimmers have two locations to practice, the Athletic Club in Lakewood Ranch and John Marble pool on SR-70, and practices are held on various days and times.

The team members are also encouraged to attend local swim clinics. There are

In 2022 they are hoping to make some exciting new changes, including venturing into their first triathlon. Coach Steve enjoys competing in triathlons and is an avid cyclist, so it will be a natural addition to his coaching skills. And some of the team already has some experience with triathlons as well, like Danielle Weathers, 14, who is already an avid triathlete. “We are going to start small with a 100–200yard swim, biking for five to 10 miles and running half to two and a half miles, dependent on age and capabilities,” revealed Coach Steve.

When asked if he had any advice that he would like to give to kids thinking about joining the Lightning swim team, Coach Steve added: “Don’t be afraid to join or to think that you have to be an awesome swimmer. That is what we are here for.”

The 14th Annual Shamrock Shiver Charity Plunge, sponsored by Clancy’s Irish Pub & Grill, saw volunteers braved the chilly

Gulf waters to earn donations from family, friends, and local businesses.

The event raised an amazing $56,180 for four local organizations - $20,000 more than last year - and way more than the target of $40,000! The organizations who will benefit from the Shamrock

Shiver are: The Blessing Bags Project, Feeding Empty Little Tummies, Healthy Teens Coalition of Manatee County, Inc., and Nutrition Initiative - all 501(c)(3) notfor-profit organizations who do great work.
