W

hen avid golfer and Waterlefe Golf and River Club member Bob Buchanan was looking for an avenue to help local kids after moving to Manatee County, he realized the community was lacking a program that would introduce the underserved and minority youth to the game of golf.

There are many occasions for kids to learn how to play basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and even cheerleading.

They can play at school, at a local park, or even in the backyard. But golf requires a course and equipment that may not be available to everyone. Most kids who get the opportunity to play golf learn from a friend or family member, but what if that influence isn't there? How many underserved and minority youth have never had the opportunity to even try the game?

With the help of Waterlefe Golf and River Club, he was able to form a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and assembled a board of directors, also members of Waterlefe, and so has created the Waterlefe Youth Golf Program (WYGP), giving underserved youth in the Bradenton and Sarasota area, the opportunity to learn and experience the game of golf.

Since its conception, the organization has received a lot of local support. Much of

the support comes from Waterlefe Golf and River Club and its members. The club provides the facility at no charge to the program, and Matt Primrose, the Head Golf Pro, with volunteer coach Denny Meskill, has offered to coach the kids, and multiple members have donated their time, money, and equipment to get the program off the ground. Monetary donations are used to provide the young golfers with lessons, a set of kids US Clubs, instructional booklets, hats, visors, and logo shirts.

Next, it was time to find kids who were interested in learning the game. So, the "Taste of Golf" program was born.

Bob, Matt, and Denny, along with other volunteers, have connected with local schools and organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, the Police Athletic League (PAL), 13th Ave Dream Center, Visible Men's Academy, the local YMCA, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, in an effort to find and expose interested kids to golf.

Visiting these organizations with nothing more than some used clubs, Wiffle or Nerf balls, and golf matts, Bob and his team of volunteers have introduced some 500-600 kids in Manatee County to the game of golf.

So far, there are about 12 kids that have stuck with the program, coming regularly to lessons most Sunday afternoons.

"After coaching kids for more than 20 years, Matt has learned a few things about how to run the program in a way that keeps their interest," noted Bob. For example, after a lesson in chipping, he might organize a game in which the kids try to chip into a game of Tic-Tac-Toe he had previously outlined with orange tape on the green, with the pin in the center square.

At the same time, a lesson in driving may include an opportunity to hit water balloons instead of golf balls, which always makes a big splash with the kids.

Matt also coaches the PGA Junior League, which is a learning and competitive team.

They compete with other teams from Bradenton to North Port. The hope is not just to introduce the kids in the WYGP to the game of golf but to possibly prepare kids who would like to continue to play on the PGA Junior League team.

"Most of the kids had never even held a real club before, and now there are a few that can hit a 200-yard drive", explained Bob. When Denny first heard about the program Bob was working on, he asked if he needed any help. He had previously coached kids with 1st Tee and was eager to have another opportunity to help kids learn the game. He also helps recruit kids through the "Taste of Golf" program.

"I love working with the younger kids especially," he said. "They are so open and impressionable and just soak up all that you tell them."

It can't be just about the lessons, Bob realized. "We needed to get these kids out and just go play golf." So, Waterlefe Youth Golf Program, in collaboration with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, has partnered these kids with "golfing mentors." Bob and his wife, Sandy, are both mentors, and there are several Waterlefe members who are interested in becoming mentors as well. Big Brothers/ Sisters has four mentors interested in golfing with the kids and has referred them to the program. In that way, it has become a mutually beneficial partnership.

According to Bob: "We don't have the means to do background checks and such, so Big Brothers and Big Sisters helps us with all of that, and in turn, I hope we are adding to their mentor program."

Waterlefe and its golf professionals are not the only ones wanting to help. John Byers, the head pro at River Run Golf Links, has gone out of his way to help and offered to let the kids play three to nine holes at no charge while Waterlefe was closed for renovations.

"Because River Run is not quite as challenging a course as Waterlefe, it is really a better course for the kids," Bob explained. Both Waterlefe and River Run have agreed to let the kids and their mentors continue to play up to nine holes, at no charge, during their non-busy hours when available, including a cart.

Big brother and golf mentor David Keegan and his Little Brother, Tylon, heard about the program at a Big Brothers/Big Sisters event held at the YMCA, where Bob and his team conducted a "Taste of Golf."

David taught his own son, now 19, how to golf and is excited to help Tyron learn to play.

"I think it's important to expose kids to a little bit of everything," said David. "And one of the things that is great about golf

is that no matter what your age, you will get moments of 'I can't believe I just did that!'" Tylon must have had a moment like that because he says that his favorite thing about golf is "hitting hole-in-ones."

Another Big Brother, Ray Miller, recalls how excited his Little Brother, Maijor, age 10, was after his first Sunday lesson, "He was still talking about it on Wednesday!" he said, laughing. According to Maijor, his favorite thing is "hitting the ball really far."

Edrick Sweeting, the parent of Aniaya, age 11, wanted her to join the program for many reasons, stating, "Golf is one sport that can help her (Aniaya) find herself." "It can be a humbling sport," he continued. "You have to come out and truly have concentration.

And it teaches patience and helps build confidence."

Aniaya seemed to agree, saying, "I was trying to find something in my interest that would help me and wouldn't be that strict, and when I found golf, it made me feel like… I'm just myself".

Aniaya's stepsister, Lillyana, also 11, says she joined the program because Aniaya and some of her cousins joined. Art is what she really loves, but she decided to give golf a try. "I am not sure it's for me," she said, "because sometimes… it doesn't go so well." But, after making the winning chip during the tic-tac-toe game, we were graced with a huge smile and a little victory dance, so today it went well.

Chloe, age 7, and her mom, Kalina, signed up for WYGP after moving from St. Petersburg, Florida, because someone recommended Matt as a youth golf coach.

Chloe said that she wants to learn because she "loves playing golf with her daddy."

"The whole idea is to get kids excited about golf that otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn to play, explained Bob. "Maybe they will continue to play at school. Who knows what doors it could open for them?" he continued. "It would be great if they continue to play, but if not, at least they had the experience."

Girl Power...

Pace Manatee goes from strength to strength and prepares for new home.

irst opening its doors in 1989, Pace Center for Girls was established in Manatee County and has since served over 1,500 girls locally. They provide holistic social, academic, and careerbuilding services for middle and highschool-aged girls who have fallen behind in their academics for a myriad of reasons.

Their first facility was located on Manatee Avenue with two portables in the back.

Then, in 1995, they built a 7,000-squarefoot building on 26th Street and moved into it the following year. According to Amy Wick 16

Mavis, who has been with Pace since 1996 and is now the Executive Director, there were only 10 computers in that facility!

But they've come a long way since then.

The family that owned the land next to Pace had lived there since 1965, and they were ready to part with it. So, Pace bought the land in 2015 with the plans to build a whole new facility. Last July, thanks to the late Paul Sharff, they moved into an 8,000-square-foot spare building that Saint Stephen's Episcopal School was able to offer them. The building was used as Saint

Stephen's middle school until 2010, so it was conveniently outfitted with classrooms.

"We called Paul wondering if the Early Learning Coalition had any extra space we could move into while we waited on construction. Paul Sharff, rainmaker that he was, said that he did not, but his church did," Amy explained.

The late Father Baker saw the vision that the church could be so much more, and the space upstairs is something that the church could offer to the community to

bring more people to the church. The vision is that once Pace is done utilizing the space, the church will figure out a way to market it to the community to bring even more life to the church.

Currently in the zoning and permitting stage, the new Pace building will be 17,000 square feet. It will be able to offer more classrooms, conference rooms, and office space, with a full industrial kitchen and a clinic, office, and restroom for the nurse's office.

Amy said: "We know girls go home for being sick often. A lot of the time, these girls go home unsupervised. We'll be able to partner with our families regarding what they want to help keep their daughters in school. A headache will go away, and they won't be losing a whole day of school when they're already behind to begin with."

The ability to have a full industrial kitchen allows Pace to become its own national school lunch program and can feed the girls meals while they're attending school.

Many of their girls struggle with having enough to eat. It's important to Amy and her team to fulfill this basic need for them so the girls can focus on their education.

Another opportunity Pace will have at the new building is to have offices for interns.

Creating more office space allows more volunteers, counselors, and teachers to

come in. The entire facility will also be fenced in to increase the students' safety with electric doors and increased security.

There could even be a potential GED or overaged middle school class. But Amy says they have to assess the needs of the community first so that they're able to serve more girls and those whom they aren't able to serve currently.

A fun aspect of the current Pace Center is the "Corner Cottage." The girls receive a point sheet for making responsible choices in class. These points turn into currency, and the girls can shop for tangible items once a month. These items can range from clothing to school supplies to cute home decorations. During Christmas time, they turn it into a Christmas shop where the girls can shop for their families! In the new facility, the "Corner Cottage" will be larger. It is funded strictly through grants, volunteers, and donations.

Since Pace's students are in middle and high school, they are usually dropped off by their parents in the morning or take public transportation.

In a county as big as ours, there may be girls in Myakka or

Lakewood Ranch who can't physically get to the facility. This is why Pace will be implementing its REACH program. The REACH Program meets the girls where they are. They can stay in their school settings, but Pace brings therapists, counselors, and wrap-around services to them during regular and after-school hours.

"We recognize that there are girls who are doing quite well in school but still need the extra support, too," Amy explained.

The average Pace girl is about two years behind in her academics when she arrives.

They work with any girl in Manatee County between the ages of 11 and 18 and have three of the five risk factors. Those can be mental health, family instability, etc. Most of their girls live with their families who are struggling for whatever reason.

"Foster care girls are a great avenue for Pace because we then become part of a care team and can provide stability for them," Amy said.

Pace girls attend their core Math, English, Social Studies, and Science classes, and all students are in a reading class as well.

Additionally, Pace has its "Spirited Girls" curriculum. According to Amy, it's a life skills and responsible decision-making course where every girl learns fundamental vocational traits.

However, the girls will still be able to come back to get help at the center, like computerized learning or tutoring.

Currently, Pace Manatee serves 59 girls, but with the addition of more classroom space, they'll be able to serve 10 to 14 more. Having a high standard for

As a result of Pace, eight in ten girls improved academically, nine in ten strengthened or maintained self-efficacy, and nine in ten are engaged in their community, measured by being enrolled in school, high education, or employment.

And with their new center, expected to be built next year, Pace Manatee will be able to reach even more girls than ever before, building up our community one girl at a time.

ON THE BALL… HappyFeet expands the beautiful game in preschool enrichment program WORDS & PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

B

etween work, school, dinner, and family time, it can be difficult to find the time in your family's busy schedule to fit in sports activities for young ones. However, HappyFeet Tampa Bay tries to combat this common problem with this solution: weekly preschool programs.

Offering weekly classes to over 220 preschools and early learning centers throughout the greater Tampa Bay area, the HappyFeet curriculum doesn't interfere with parents' or educators' schedules.

This program aims to instill a love for the game of soccer while also developing motor skills, personal responsibility, self-control, and good decision-making skills.

Jameison Lynn, COO for HappyFeet Tampa Bay, felt it was the right time to bring HappyFeet soccer to Manatee County. He said: "We saw the constant growth in Manatee County and decided it was the perfect location to move from Tampa Bay." Smiling Faces Academy in Bradenton is one of the local child care centers that offers HappyFeet to its students. Coach Jessica is one of the coaches who facilitates the program there and has received a lot of positive feedback from the staff, directors, and children.

"The students are very receptive to the drills and exercises! It's really fun to watch them cheer for and encourage each other during practice times," she said.

HappyFeet uses familiar songs, stories, nursery rhymes, and fun games to introduce soccer to the children. The students get a soccer ball named Bob the Bobcat and get to take him on imaginative adventures to the zoo, movies, or an enchanted castle!

The curriculum encourages children to use deceptive dribbling and ball-striking skills to "tame their bobcats." HappyFeet’s philosophy uses creative play and developmental skills to build a solid foundation that they hope leads to a lifelong involvement in sports and fitness.

Coach Jessica explained: "In the child care centers, we do focus on the basic fundamentals of soccer, and once we see improvements in their skills and coordination, the students can continue to be challenged."

Jameison added: "Partnering with the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County and Smiling Faces Academy has been very rewarding for our staff. They've been able to work with so many

children who potentially would not have been able to participate in soccer or our program otherwise."

Coach Jessica initially heard about HappyFeet through the job website Indeed. She thought it sounded too good to be true, but after applying, Jameison reached out right away and sent her to shadow Coach Tim for a day.

"I instantly fell in love with the program!" she beamed. Jessica's dad enjoyed soccer and was a goalie in high school and college.

His passion for the sport is what sparked her interest, and from there, she was able to play during high school and coached the elementary soccer program.

One of Jessica's favorite things is watching how the kids progress and make improvements. She has one student in particular who has improved drastically since she first started working with her.

"Not just in her soccer skills and balance, but this specific student's social skills and creativity have really started to blossom. She was not very interested in participating initially but would stand by me quietly. She has now been a part of HappyFeet for about eight months, and she laughs, screams, and runs around with everyone and doesn't stop smiling," Jessica recalled. "She's one of the best participants I have in her group and can do all her soccer skills easily. She doesn't say much, but that's ok! Now, she's always ready to try new things, and we get to have so much fun while doing so."

Ensuring a safe, fun, and nurturing environment is critical to the HappyFeet organization for the advancement and success of its participants. Their approach to working with children provides the ideal environment for their students to explore their athletic capabilities, express themselves creatively, learn to work well in small groups, and develop their emotional and social skills. They achieve this while progressing through their "story time with a soccer ball" curriculum.

In addition to preschool programs, HappyFeet also offers soccer leagues for ages two through eight. However, there are a few differences between the league and child care programs. For example, the child care programs are 30-minute classes per week at their partnered schools.

Jameison said, "This program is great for busy families who might not have the extra time outside of school and work to commit even more time to children's activities. The curriculum used is very similar to the leagues' where we are always using our HappyFeet soccer sessions!"

The HappyFeet league program runs seasonally in the spring, summer, fall, and winter for seven weeks. The sessions take place once per weekend. This helps the parents who might be too busy during the week to take their children to multiple practices and games. There are 14 locations available in the Tampa Bay and surrounding area, one being in Lakewood Ranch.

Leagues are separated by age group, and the duration will vary depending on the group. For instance, the two-year-old group's session would only last for thirty minutes, while the five to eightyear-olds' sessions would be an hour long.

HappyFeet originated in Kansas City in 1988 when Andy Barney, an Oxford, England native, ran coaching sessions for three, four, and 27

five-year-old children at a local indoor soccer center. HappyFeet's website shows Andy was raised in a soccer-rich family with two generations rooted in professional soccer. When he came to the United States, Andy established British Soccer Camps, now called Challenger Sports, the USA's largest camp organization.

Jameison is originally from Kansas City and grew up playing soccer with various clubs. He says that his passion is soccer and always has been. After becoming involved with HappyFeet in Kansas City, he moved to the Tampa Bay area and is helping grow HappyFeet to impact more children and expand the "beautiful game," as he calls it, in Tampa Bay. "I have played and coached at various levels all my life! I started playing soccer at the age of four in Kansas City and played through

college. Now, my passion is passing on my love of the game to the next generation," he said.

When looking for coaches and staff, Jameison looks for someone who has high energy, experience in soccer, and loves working with kids. Additionally, their staff must pass a Level II DCF background screening before working with any child care centers.

Being able to reach children in Manatee County who might not have the opportunity to play soccer while also helping them develop important life skills has significantly impacted Jameison and his staff at HappyFeet. The young students' excitement and focus during sessions are a testament to how successful the program is while maintaining the fun.

he Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) has implemented a new assessment tool across six child care centers called EarlyBird. This game-based evaluation assesses literacy and identifies potential reading challenges early before they become reading problems.

Administered on an iPad, EarlyBird is fun and easy to use as it utilizes engaging games to assess and score children's reading skills. EarlyBird was developed and scientifically validated at Boston Children's Hospital in partnership with faculty at the Florida Center for Reading Research.

as opposed to a facilitator to score the students while they play the games. Every student in the VPK programs at the child care centers is assessed. The goal is to see improvement from the first assessment to the last one of the year.

"We are finding the EarlyBird assessments helpful for the ELC's other programs as well because we're able to stick different tactics into those programs to help close any gaps," explained Colleen. "For example, we implement rhyming and vocabulary into our ReadingPals instruction."

The comprehensive results are given to teachers so that they can target these issues within the classroom and give more individualized help to struggling students. Students take the EarlyBird assessment three times throughout the school year.

Once in the beginning, again in the middle of the school year, and a final time at the end of the school year. The assessments take about twenty minutes to complete.

The ELC is given immediate feedback from EarlyBird with resources for grouping and strategies that are shared with the teachers. There are family letters that go home as well to help families with their child's literacy. Additionally, there are nextstep resources that come with the program based on the results the teachers get, and they can utilize them immediately in their lesson plans.

"We've gotten a lot of positive feedback about having this data so early in the year," said Colleen Perry, Community Educational Initiatives Coordinator for the ELC. "The teachers can group their students based on skill development and know what to start working on within the classroom."

The assessments cover letter name and sound recognition, rhyming, oral language comprehension like vocabulary, and oral sentence composition. EarlyBird uses voice recognition

HELPING TO STAFF THE FUTURE… WORDS & PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

ue to various unprecedented factors in the last three years, the child care industry has found itself with a huge staffing gap. Not only has it been difficult for centers to keep employees, but it's also been hard to hire employees, and working with young children is certainly not for the weak.

In the spring of 2022, the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County partnered with Manatee Technical College (MTC) to pilot a pre-apprenticeship program with the hopes of closing this employment gap in Manatee County. This pre-apprenticeship program provides hands-on classroom instruction with a mock child care lab for students to fully immerse themselves in the role of a teacher (and sometimes even as a student)! The goal 50

is to prepare their students to be eligible to obtain employment in quality early child care settings and learn the fundamentals of child care education.

The pre-apprenticeship course is fifteen weeks long with two start dates a year: January and August. MTC's training includes the necessary 45 DCF hours, first aid, CPR, inclusion training, PEARLS training, and more. These students are given the tools necessary for an entry-level position in the child care industry.

Along with educating the students on how to promote the various skills that define school readiness, the students in the ECE program are also taught soft skills, such as resume writing and

interviewing skills. All the students get to go on tours of different child care facilities in the community.

So far, 32 students have successfully completed the pre -apprenticeship program, and 15 have continued to the MTC apprenticeship program. The next step after the apprenticeship program is the director class. These programs are all a part of MTC's Early Childhood Education (ECE) track.

The goal of the apprenticeship program is for the students to gain their staff credentials. Some plan to continue on to receive their director's credentials as well.

Alexis Hall, a current pre-apprenticeship student, plans to continue her ECE and go for a director's credential so that she can one day open up her own center.

"Every kid deserves a chance to be introduced to an early learning environment. Different learning techniques should be exposed to children to support their growth and help them in a social environment," Alexis explained.

Monyay Randall is another pre-apprenticeship student who would like to one day open her own child care center. She was currently working at a child care center, but after shadowing at a partnered center during her time in the program, she and the staff really connected, and she was offered a position with them.

Alexis is a mother of two children who attend a local child care center. After getting to talk one day, Alexis told them that she was in the pre-apprenticeship program, and they offered her a job at the center!

"Growing up, I've always had a passion for helping others. After working at a couple of centers while in high school and being a babysitter, I developed a passion for working with kids," she said.

Early childhood educators are the first block in a child's

education, and AnnaMaria Mascherino Carleton wants to make sure that her students have all the knowledge and support from her that they need to be successful in their classrooms. As an ECE instructor at MTC, AnnaMaria strives to ensure that her students know what to expect from the interview process to be model employees at the child care centers.

"The centers have stated that they feel the employees are entering with key essentials such as the 45 DCF hours and CPR certification but also classroom knowledge such as lesson planning, classroom management, teamwork, and professionalism," she said.

With almost half of the pre-apprenticeship graduates continuing on to the apprenticeship program, AnnaMaria states that there is a mix of students pursuing a four-year degree and those completing the two-year apprenticeship program at MTC. Some students enter the program knowing their final goal is to be an elementary education teacher, and early childhood education is their first stepping stone.

Janae Lane attends the pre-apprenticeship class, and her older sister is in the Apprenticeship Level Two class. Janae says that this program teaches her to be more transparent and open to spreading her "sparkle" in the world.

"What makes early childhood education important to me is knowing that I will have a huge part in helping and teaching the

materials as they would in a child care facility. A future student may find themselves reading a story and guiding his or her fellow classmates through circle time in preparation for the real classroom someday.

Now that we know what the ideal future student is, what about an ideal future child care employee?

No one has continued onto the director course yet, but Ralitsa Funez, previously reported on by NEXTGEN, will be completing her Level Three and Director course next semester. She is currently employed at DC's Child Care Center.

"The ideal future employee has a passion for learning education, is a team player, and has a love for children. The employee is part of something bigger than their classroom. They are a team with the parents, their coworkers, and the community they live in," AnnaMaria explained. "The future employee is someone who realizes and values their important role in their students' lives.

According to AnnaMaria, the previous students of the preapprenticeship program feel that they are starting a new career well-prepared. Through their in-class learning and shadowing opportunities, they are able to see the things they learn about in class in action.

"The students form a community in our classroom from day one, and now we have a networking group to lean on for ideas or a listening ear as they navigate their new career path," she stated.

There are several differences between the pre-apprenticeship program and the apprenticeship program. The pre-apprenticeship student is not employed, while the apprenticeship student must be employed full-time at a participating center and be working to be in the program. A pre-apprenticeship student has not completed the required 45 DCF hours. The pre-apprenticeship student has basic early childhood developmental knowledge. But the apprenticeship program builds on the knowledge they gain and puts it to use in the day-to-day running of their classroom.

Additionally, the apprenticeship students are observed at their site and given feedback and tips if needed.

So, who is the ideal student considering the ECE path and beginning with the pre-apprenticeship program? AnnaMaria says that the ideal future student is someone who is eager to learn.

Someone who isn't afraid to ask questions. In their interactive model classrooms, the students use the same toys and classroom 53

ot surprisingly, some single and working parents have grown to dread school vacations, legal holidays (like Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Washington's Birthday), and "teacher in-service days." These are days when the child is out of school, but parents usually have to be at work. To make matters worse, caregivers whom you might rely on at other times of the year often ask for time off during holidays, and community activities like art classes and Scouting often are canceled too.

The good side of these situations is that you know they are coming and can plan for them. To help in that process, get copies of your child's school schedule as early as possible so you are aware of vacations several months in advance. Children's vacation schedules often dictate family vacation plans. With sufficient advance notice, you may be able to block out your own vacation time to coincide with that of your youngster.

Few parents have as much vacation time available as their children, so arrangements have to be made for child care and supervision within the framework of the demands of the parents' jobs. If your spouse has some flexibility in his or her work schedule, divide the home responsibilities so one of you takes time off during different parts of the children's vacation. Some couples are able to work out a plan where Mom is home in the morning, and Dad replaces her in the afternoon; perhaps one or both can work flexible schedules (6 A.M. to 2 P.M.; 2:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.) So that at least one parent is home at all times.

Fortunately, businesses are becoming more sensitive to the family needs of their employees. The Federal Medical and Family Leave Act of 1993 is helpful to parents upon the birth or adoption of a child or when a child is ill, but it does not have any provisions covering school holidays and vacations.

Sometimes neither you nor your spouse will be able to get off work. Or you will need a backup or alternative strategy for unexpected job demands or the sudden loss of a caretaker, both of which require some last-minute juggling of schedules.

It is important that school-age children are always supervised, directly if possible and indirectly if not. Indirect supervision means providing a safe environment and a structured schedule of activities, including regular times to check in, even by phone, with a responsible adult. This latter option should be considered only for mature preteenagers and is never the preferred alternative.

When you can't break away from the office, another option is to call upon extended family members to help. Some parents are able to work out a timetable with several families, where each assumes the caretaking responsibilities for all the children one day a week, or they trade hours of babysitting with each other.

If none exist, gather some parents together and, as a group, urge local organizations or city leaders to provide holiday activities for children.

For some parents of school-age children, the best long-term solution is to work at home all the time, often in a small homebased business of their own. However, while this could be an ideal option, it is not available to everyone, and working at home poses problems of its own.

Some high school and college students, or after-school child care employees, are willing to work on holidays, perhaps coming to your home to take care of the children from several families.

The Power of Presence vs. Presents…

ne of the hardest things about being part of a family is all of the pressure to get presents right during the holidays. From Santa's Secret Workshops at schools, work parties, and the A Night Before Christmas celebration at GT Bray, amidst the other holiday gatherings and preparations we have with family, we have so many swirling tasks before us.

Therefore, if you're ever likely to experience a conundrum in terms of gift buying, this is the time it will happen.

We will surely muster through gift cards, Dollar Trees, or Macy's racks for teachers and friends, but we feel so much more pressure 60

as parents to find the perfect gifts.

If you're having flashbacks to The Office episode where Dwight's oversold Princess Unicorn sells to the desperate citizens in Scranton, PA, wanting to get this highly sought-after gift for their kids, you're tracking with me!!!

However, each year, what parents really want - and kids too, when they're not hyped up on all the candy and lore of presents - is true presence - just being together in enjoyment after and in between all the hard work we all do throughout the year.

Everyone, not just parents, feels the wild busyness of making it to all the plays and concerts, getting end-of-the-semester homework turned in (especially as they hit high school and are also studying and applying to colleges), and the scramble to get teacher and coach gifts.

Therefore, it's just so lovely - and even more highly sought after these days - to just take those potentially peaceful moments between Christmas and the New Year to really just relax.

However, many times, people feel pressured and don't know quite what to do when they do finally come to a screeching halt.

Here are eight great tips to help you get through these weeks with more presence than presents: 1. Learning to self-soothe will be very important to come down from the high holiday buzz, first and foremost. There's no way you can give presence to your kids if you're amped up. Take some deep breaths and allow them to see you modeling rest, reading a good book, taking a walk, or doing a mini-fitness routine.

2. Clean the house gently to get your peaceful bearings even more fully. Beware, you don't do this as a drill sergeant or in a resentful way but bring in lightness and fun. Open up your windows and doors and maybe even turn on some light classical music or some fun family favorites.

3. Take some time locally to shop after Christmas sales so you can enjoy a family day of shopping. If you usually don't have much money this time of year, see number #6.

4. Buy presents that go the distance puzzles and mystery dinner game to do (Crime Scene Christmas by the Super Sleuths is one we made to have fun with our friends that the Joy.FM played!)

5. Play tourist for a bit and do a beach day and get ice cream and fries to share and ride the trolley.

9. Take a day trip to a simple getaway. A few places we can do this within a few hours are Mt. Dora, Tarpon Springs, Celebration, Disney Strings, Ginny Springs, or Universal Citywalk. Pro-tip: For holiday gifts, buy gift cards to the stores in these areas so you can let the kids have movies or restaurants or bowling or whatever else they would like without breaking the bank. For a bigger, fun holiday trip, consider a weekend trip to Banning Mills for all levels of family ziplining, cabin life, and campfires in Georgia!

The bottom line is this. A long time from now, your child will vaguely have a new image in their minds of what you bought them. I know you get this along with me. I know I can't deny that I still feel a thrill at remembering my Barbie and the Rockers stages one precious 1980s Christmas. However, more than anything, I remember how I felt with my now-late parents. Taking time together matters. As Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

6. Buy some gifts but use half of your budget to get gift cards to stores so you can your child can find things you'd both like to do together, such as a GameStop video game card, board games from Walmart, or to Dicks for a basketball, football, or tennis racquets. Take time to leisurely shop together.

7. Do your research and start making a list now of all of the movies you've been wanting to see over the holidays. Ask your child/ren which ones they would like to watch with you and ask them what snacks they'd like to share together. Be sure to stock up!

8. Attend to your child's emotions by taking them out for your favorite drinks at Starbucks. Do a wellness check and truly listen without judgment. How are they? What's been hard, what's been good? Take a walk at a park together if they're more kinetically wired for movement!

Cherish This Christmas Craft...

A

s I sit here and write the directions for this craft, I find it hard to believe we are already entering the holiday season. It certainly has been a busy school year, and I am noticing it a lot more now that I have two out of my three children in high school.

When friends and family tell you to cherish the time because kids grow up so fast, they aren't kidding. It is still hard to believe my oldest will graduate in the spring. This makes it ever so important to slow down and enjoy the special moments.

Throughout the year, I look for ways to spend quality time with my children, and recently, my youngest son and I worked together to create a Paper Plate Christmas Decoration craft.

This paper plate activity is simple to assemble, inexpensive, and great for hand-eye coordination. Plus, it is a fun way to welcome the holiday season and keep preschoolers and elementary-aged children entertained over winter break.

If you would like to recreate this Paper Plate Christmas Decoration with your child, you will need the following: - White paper plates - Glitter - Fuzzy sticks, AKA pipe cleaners - Small paint brush - Glue - Tape - Paper towels or newspaper Tip: Most of these items can be found around your home or purchased from a local craft store.

DIRECTIONS: To get started, place either a piece of newspaper or enough paper towels down to protect surfaces from glue and to catch any loose glitter.

Then, twist a piece of fuzzy stick into a loop and tape it to the back of a paper plate. This will be the hanger of the Christmas decorations.

Next, have your child apply glue to the front of the Christmas decorations.

My son and I did this a few ways to make unique designs. In one instance, he put glue dots; in another, he made squiggly lines, and we also took a paintbrush and spread the glue all over the plate.

Then, it is time to pick the colors of glitter. My son wanted to decorate the plate with all kinds of colors and even mixed the glitters.

Tip: Set aside an extra paper plate to pour the loose glitter onto.

You can then reuse the glitter or discard it after you are finished.

Once the glitter is applied to the plate, lightly tap it over the newspaper or paper towel to remove the loose glitter. Then, allow the glue to dry to set the glitter.

Finally, you can look for a spot in your home or office to display the Paper Plate Christmas Decoration craft. A great place would be on a Christmas tree, a wreath hook, or a doorknob. It could also be hung on a refrigerator or a file cabinet with a magnet.

This is such a great way to decorate and spend time together. I hope your family enjoys assembling this craft and has a wonderful holiday season.

Teaching children to cook your family's recipes can nurture ethnic identity, heritage, and culture. It also gives young chefs a sense of accomplishment.

Follow these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep holiday cooking and feasting fun and healthy:

Prevent burns & other kitchen injuries.

Fully cook meats and poultry, and thoroughly wash raw vegetables and fruits.

Heed hand hygiene While you're teaching your children family recipes, also teach them about good food safety. Wash your hands frequently, and make sure children do the same.

Sample safely If you offer your helper a taste, be sure to wash the spoon before putting it back into the food. Also, make sure that taste doesn't include raw eggs or other ingredients that need to be cooked before they're eaten.

Keep raw foods separate.

During preparations for a party, the refrigerator and freezer can become crowded with sweets, roasts, and other goodies. Take care not to let these become breeding grounds for bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Always keep raw foods and cooked foods

Thaw frozen foods in the fridge.

Always thaw meat in the refrigerator, never on the countertop. Try to keep a safe, constant temperature as the food defrosts—at 40 °F or below.

Keep hot food and liquids away from the edges of counters and tables, where they can be easily knocked over by a young child's exploring hands. Turn the pot handles toward the side or back of the stove. Be sure that young children cannot access microwave ovens.

Show older children how to use oven mitts to protect hands from heat and how to turn appliances on and off safely.

Remind them to keep flammable objects away from open flames. And remember to supervise children when cooking to ensure they are sticking with safe and age-appropriate tasks.

Leftovers: put away or toss?

Perishable foods that require refrigeration should never be left at room temperature for more than two hours. After being safely cooked, Hot food must be kept at 140° F or warmer to prevent bacterial growth.

Within 2 hours of cooking food or after it is removed from an appliance keeping it warm, leftovers must be refrigerated.

Clean-up quickly After a holiday meal, clean up immediately.

A toddler could wake up early the next morning and choke on leftover food or come in contact with alcohol or tobacco.

The State of Women…

hile the state of the SW Florida region is booming in terms of growth, economic development, and business productivity, the reality is that many residents are struggling to keep their heads above water, especially women who represent the largest demographic living in poverty locally. According to United Way's ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report, approximately 40% of local families and 75% of single female heads of households do not make a sustainable wage in our region and therefore do not earn enough to address their basic household budget needs.

Manatee County has seen the highest regional growth in the number of ALICE households since 2019, a 16% increase with almost 67,000 people living below the ALICE survival budget threshold. The report found a family of four with two children and both parents working full-time still fell below the survival budget by $9,000.

What are some of the barriers that impact a woman's or family's ability to achieve financial security in our community? The lack of affordable housing and access to childcare top the list. The cost of housing and child care have a far greater reach than the individuals struggling to pay for these core needs; they impact employers and, ultimately, the community as a whole.

If the people working in our community cannot afford to live here, they will have no choice but to move elsewhere. And access to childcare?

A recent report from the Florida Chamber Foundation indicated that the economic impact of inconsistent or no childcare cost the state of Florida more than $5 billion last year. A new report from Florida Tax Watch states that: "Quality, affordable childcare, and early education are critical to Florida's economy. Accessible childcare allows parents to participate in the workforce and, thus, support families at a stage in their lives where small investments return large social dividends. With a stable and productive workforce, businesses can

limit the costs of turnover and increase productivity, which, in turn, increases sales revenues. Higher incomes and sales revenues increase tax revenues and bolster the economy, further supporting the needs of the workforce, businesses, and communities."

What is the Women's Resource Center (WRC) doing to address the issues of women and families in our community? Our role is both programmatic and policy-oriented.

WRC uses a comprehensive approach that includes career development, resource connection, mental health ser vices, education, scholarships, mentoring, and direct financial assistance to help our clients overcome the obstacles that keep them from building financial security. WRC is often just one piece of the larger puzzle of support for the individuals who reach out to us for help. We work with and refer clients to over 250 community partners who are doing great work in our region.

At the Women's Resource Center, we also consistently track the barriers that people are dealing with so we can determine patterns and identify systemic barriers impacting our clients. Programming c h a n g e s th e l i ve s of s o m e b u t educating the decision-makers has the potential to impact the lives of all women and families by changing the policies and systems that root families in poverty. WRC provides a voice for women and families who do not have access or opportunity to address policymakers themselves.

T

his year marked the return of Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra's Symphony on the Sand event! Having been unable to hold the event for the last three years, Symphony on the Sand returned with a variety of fine foods and hit music under the talented baton of Maestro Alfred Gershfeld.

This highly anticipated event occurred on the sands of Coquina Beach on Veterans Day. As a salute to the national holiday, the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra (AMICCO) per formed patriotic classics in addition to international and American musical compositions, Broadway hits, and movie favorites. The performers ranged from wind and string instrumentalists to pianists to vocalists.

Most performers are local from AMICCO, but some were professionally sourced from New York City.

Jeanie Pickwick, who was on the Steering Committee for Symphony on the Sand, has managed the event since 2013.

"T his event helps us to foster the development of musically talented youth throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties, as well as AMICCO's outreach programs to the community," Jeanie explained.

The Young Artists Solo Competition is one aspect of AMICCO's youth programs. It is open to any wind and string instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists between the ages of 12 and 18 within Manatee and Sarasota County. Candidates have ten minutes to audition and can either use sheet music or memorization for their piece. Past award winners cannot compete, and students must be participating in their school's music program, except for pianists and home-schooled performers. Participants are highly encouraged to join AMICCO. Margaret Toth won the 2022 Young Artists Solo Competition. She is a highly talented violinist who performed her competition piece from memory. In addition to a cash prize, publicity, and mentoring, Margaret was awarded the opportunity to perform a solo piece at Symphony on the Sand.

Symphony on the Sand, holds advanced degrees in conducting and violin per formance from the Kishinev and Moscow Conservatories in the former Soviet Union. Anna Maria Oyster Bar provided wait staff for the event while restaurants, including Beach House, Euphemia Haye, Hometown Desserts, Coquina Café, Beach Bistro, and Lazy Lobster, served guests a "progressive dinner of small plates."

In addition to Symphony on the Sand, the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra perform concerts from December through March. The chorus and

orchestra members can be both volunteer and professional musicians, which is unusual as choirs and orchestras typically work separately. They will perform a variety of pieces from beloved classics to opera to signature American popular music.

Part of AMICCO's mission is to foster the development of musically talented youth through participation, competitions, and grants. They also provide performance opportunities for talented professional and volunteer musicians. This allows them to offer high-quality choral and instrumental music for the community at large.

"We're about our community. We love our community and want to support it and all of its people. We buy and play locally, you could say," Jeanie laughed. She said that at the end of the day, if they can expose listeners to something beautiful, then they've succeeded.

As Symphony on the Sand came to a close, the sun set behind the Gulf of Mexico as attendees danced and waved their American flags. A triumphant return of the event was marked by the joyous laughter, full stomachs, and harmonies sung by those who attended the event.
