A Man You Can Bank On… Ross Hodges on four decades of helping his community WORDS: Bre Jones Mulock PICTURES: Whitney Patton

W

ith stifling summer heat so thick you could almost see it hovering tauntingly above a field dotted with bright, white cotton, 10-year-old Ross Hodges – with his grandmother’s pantyhose pulled over his face to protect him from inhaling fibers – feverishly worked his pitchfork atop a cotton tractor that soared into a vast turquoise sky on his grandparents’ west Texas farm.

Trees are loaded with golden apricots, and steer speckled the land where Hodges, along with his cousins, spent countless childhood summers stripping cotton and working cattle. At the same time, the nostalgic aromas of baking pies and yeast rolls meandered lovingly from his grandmother’s kitchen.

Sweat rolling down his cheeks and dirt covering his jeans, Hodges preserved into the hard work and art of farming while weaving a tapestry of cozy, formative memories and strong bonds with his grandparents.

And then a fateful Friday afternoon unfolded before him like a twinkling premonition revealing Hodges’ future. The Tulia National Bank doors swung open, and refreshing, icy cold air greeted him like an inviting, new friend eager to strike up a conversation.

“I felt that wonderful air condition, and then I looked over across the room and saw this man in a three-piece suit with a gold chain

to his pocket,” said Hodges with a chuckle in his warm Texas drawl. “I leaned into my grandfather and said, ‘What does he do?

That’s what I want to be.’”

While the cool air escape from farm work and fancy banker clothes may have initially lured Hodges, now senior vice president and relationship manager of SouthState Bank in Bradenton – to the banking industry, relationships, community love, and a deeprooted desire to “take care of neighbors” firmly planted him into the business.

Hodges has carved out a successful commercial banking career in Manatee County for nearly four decades, rising as a trusted source for local businesses and community leaders in advising and navigating financial solutions. Pouring heart into the community, Hodges has donated countless hours coaching on ball fields and serving on boards such as the Manatee Education Foundation and The Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County while building his career and raising three children.

“I am a local banker who loves this community,” said Hodges, a graduate of Abilene Christian University who lives by the mantra to always help your family, neighbors, and community. “This is where I have raised my three children and where I will retire. Giving back to my community is an investment in the future for my kids and grandkids.”

With a tall stature hinting to his college football days and eyes that seem to smile through his glasses, Hodges exudes kindness and the ability to strike up a conversation with strangers like they are old pals sipping lemonade on a front porch and reminiscing about the good old days, a quality that has attracted many local colleagues, leaders and business owners.

“I worked with Ross at Regions, and Ross was a tremendous asset to the bank,” said Brian Volner, managing director at Sarasota Private Trust Company. “I enjoyed our very successful business partnership.

Steve Wilson with Hide-Away Storage Solutions concurs with Volner. Wilson has turned to Hodges for financial business needs spanning the last 20 years.

“Ross has an amazing ability to relate with business owners and really understand their needs,” Wilson said. “He then carries those needs back to the bank to get financial support. He is just a great guy – on the right seat on the right bus.”

While Wilson emphasizes Hodges’ solid character, the business owner stresses success blooms from more than kindness.

Flu, the Depression, and World War I,” said Hodges, his jovial tone slipping into stoic admiration. “It really hit me that this man had grit. He worked 24/7 on the farm. His community took care of family first, and then they took care of their neighbors.”

Even though Hodges veered away from farm life, his deep love for his grandparents and summer experiences shape the person he is today. When grandkids turned nine years old on the farm, they had the chance to pick out their first steer, raising it to sell at auction.

“It was interesting to see which cousins sold their steer and bought toys with the money and who reinvested,” said Hodges, whose parents worked as teachers.

“Ross is an extremely nice guy, but it’s so much more than that,” said Wilson. “He is very good at judging projects he can get financial support for. There are a lot of nice guys out there, but this – the ability to combine the need for business and banking, that combination – makes him very attractive.”

In the early morning glow one recent weekday, Hodges pulled a sign across the pavement of the bank entrance, alerting customers the lobby would be closed that day – a lingering effect of COVID-19 and short staff. Empty hallways echo the one or two pairs of high heels clicking through the offices that used to bustle with employees. While navigating the pandemic has stretched Hodges to creatively problem solve, he said the nature and momentum of SouthState Bank was already moving into a remote-work direction pre-COVID-19.

“If you can believe it, our headquarters are still in Winter Haven, and we were already open to home offices in some cases before Covid,” said Hodges, who has seen the community bank through multiple acquisitions. “You can find talent anywhere, and as long as you have good bandwidth, it may not matter where they work.”

Hodges sites positions such as underwriters do not converse daily with clients and often pour overwork in a back room. In addition, growing technology is shuffling financial institutions to think outside of the brickand-mortar office building.

“Some offices will not fill back up,” said Hodges, who expressed gratitude for a busy year drawing in clients across Manatee, Sarasota, Hillsborough, and Pinellas counties. “But there has to be balance. One drawback is it is hard to mentor the next generation remotely.”

Tucked back in a small, unassuming space, Hodges’ office proudly displays coffee mugs from each bank name he has worked under and photos that warm his heart.

Son, Spencer, donning a Manatee High School football jersey, smiles from a framed picture. Hodges proudly gushed his son now works for NDC Construction before pointing out a picture of his daughter, Whittni, who practices law in town.

On the end of the shelf, daughter Chelsea, now a speech therapist for Manatee County, poses with her leg extended back in a graceful dance shot. But he smiled ear-to-ear, mentioning his wife of 41 years, Sheila – who he remembers talking about for an hour and 45 minutes parked in his 1977 Camaro with his grandmother.

“We burned through a tank of gas, and my grandmother told me (Sheila) was a good one and not to let her get away,” said Hodges, beaming at the memory.

Next to his computer, a sepia-toned portrait of Hodges’ grandfather, dressed in a neatly pressed suit, inspires him every day.

“Through Covid, I look back on this picture from 1941 and see my grandfather, who by this time had been through the Spanish

“I love helping business owners see their dreams,” said Hodges. “I get to help churches, marinas – businesses that form where we live. As a community bank, we are able to be competitive, but also have relationships with our clients.”

The power to cultivate relationships spills deep into his love for volunteerism.

Trustee and current chairman of the City of Bradenton Police Pension Fund, Hodges, also serves on both the Manatee Education Foundation and Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County boards. He views giving back to his community as an investment in the future. Mentoring youth glows as a duty for him.

“You have to get in their sandbox to get them to open up,” said Hodges, who loves playing air hockey with kids at the Boys & Girls Club to inspire conversation. “As mentors, you just get a small amount of time with these kids, but you can impact them so much and change their trajectory.”

Hodges expressed that clubs are in his fabric, and he cannot remember a time when they were not part of his life. His father, living in the backroom of his stepdad’s liquor store, discovered guidance at the Maverick Boys Club in Amarillo, Texas, during a time when his buddies were either joining the military or heading to jail. The Club etched out a way to climb above hardship for his father,

who eventually joined the military, drove an ambulance, and attended college on the G.I. Bill.

“I like connecting with these kids and hearing their story,” said Hodges, who notes the Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County reaches 1,500 kids a year. “I can share my story and my dad’s story.”

President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Manatee County, Dawn Stanhope, expressed gratitude for Hodge’s humble leadership and drive to create an even better community with his instrumental support for the youth that attends the clubs.

“His involvement has taken many forms over the years, from coaching kids to ser ving on several committees and the board, while inviting others in the community to learn more about our mission,” Stanhope said. “He’s quick to share his story of how the clubs impacted him when he was a child and provides our young people with a positive role model that they can identify with because of his close connection to our mission as a Club kid for life.”

Stanhope shared Hodges is quick to support without hesitation.

“Some of my favorite moments are when I see Ross smiling and talking with our Club members,” Stanhope said. “He genuinely cares about them as much as he does for

his own family. We are blessed to have him in our community.”

Past chairman and current member of the Manatee Education Foundation, Hodges’ eyes light up when he shares how much “cross-pollination” occurs between community non-profits.

“I often see non-profits helping and benefiting from each other,” said Hodges.

“Our community works together because ultimately this helps create a better place for our kids and grandkids.”

Hodges’ value of mentors’ journeys back to that sweltering summer of 1969 within the impressive walls of Tulia National Bank. The suited banker, Willard Paine, sponsored a myriad of sports teams and rose as a community hero, helping his neighbors all along the way.

“I bet Willard Paine had no idea how much he impacted me or others,” said Hodges.

“Mentors have this ability. We just need to help our family, help our neighbors and our community, and we would all be just fine.”

appled late afternoon sunlight filtered through a sprawling leaf canopy that seemed to gingerly hug a sleepy northwest Bradenton street as nine-year-old Madeline Pye zipped down the asphalt on a scooter, her auburn ponytail trailing behind.

just eased into their driveway, returning from Sunday’s habitual routine: Church and lunch. Spilling out of the car into their brick entrance home that exudes warmth and Southern charm, the five Pye kids scattered as they bolted through the doors to tackle tasks.

Elijah, who recently turned five and idolizes his older siblings, napped in a bedroom upstairs.

At first glance, the Pye family’s beautiful, controlled chaos on a Sunday afternoon seemed to unfold like any other Bradenton

family, where the weekend vibes are slowly fading away into the focused lens of a new work and school week.

But they are not just any other family. They are heroes.

Unassuming and humble, they work under the radar, pouring heart into their community through Jesus Christ by fostering children who need guidance, hope, and love the most. Five children in four years have felt the glowing warmth of security and safety that illuminate the Pye home, including Elijah, who Heather and Tim Pye-- with open minds and open arms -- adopted to join their four biological children.

“We have people say to us, ‘You are so amazing,’” said Heather Pye, who started dating her husband, Tim, at age 16 after they met at church. “But we are not. God gives you what you need every day. At the end of each day, we, too, are spent and need to recharge. I believe the Lord called us to do this. It’s a very strong feeling.”

Joining the 175 current area homes welcoming foster children, the Pyes work through One More Child, a ministry providing Christ-centered services to vulnerable children and struggling families locally and worldwide. First opening doors as an Arcadia, Florida orphanage in 1904, One More Child has channeled hope to thousands of hurting children in tangible ways. Including food programs for the hungry, single mom resources, human trafficking safe houses, and foster care homes, to name a few. Reaching 13 countries worldwide, the organization strives to learn how to best meet the needs of each community.

“Whether it’s providing clean diapers to a newborn baby, food for a hungry child, safety for an abused child, or foster or adoptive homes to children in crisis, we work to share with children who have been abandoned, neglected, or abused the healing love of Jesus,” said Rachel Froelich, case manager at One More Child who emphasized foster care placement can span from 1 day to a year or even longer.

“God has presented us with the ability to help sustain and grow our community.”

Froelich, who has fostered 15 children in two years, expressed urgency in recruiting more families like the Pyes to provide vulnerable children with a safe home – a

place to lie their head at night, seek hugs and fill their hungry tummies. In just 2020 alone, 344 children in Manatee County were placed into foster care, with 194 resulting from caretaker drug and alcohol abuse, according to the Department of Children and Families Suncoast Region.

Sadly, 16,000 children in Florida are removed from their homes each year due to abandonment, abuse, and neglect, DCF cited.

“Fostering is a very important need in Manatee County because our area has one of the highest removal rates in the state of Florida,” said Froelich, who shared the pandemic has chipped away at participating foster families, decreasing from 200 to 175 since COVID began. “This is because we have a high amount of drug issues that result in the need to remove children.”

With a career submerging her into a frontrow seat of foster care, Froelich attached actual scared and sorrowful faces to the names of kids streaming through the system. She met and connected with the children behind the tragic stories.

“I wanted to make a difference in kids’ lives,” said Froelich, who currently fosters two girls. “I really love to see them improve and grow. One of my girls just accepted Christ and was baptized.”

Juggling four kids – ages two, four, six and eight at the time – a part-time job at

a hair salon and 6 a.m. wake-ups for Fit Crew, Heather Pye’s heart swelled when a friend and Manatee Memorial Hospital ER nurse shared in 2017 her tragic insight of a struggling foster care system and the many hurting, neglected children trapped in broken homes.

The nurse’s words, dropping one by one like angelic music notes weaving a melody of fate, reverberated within Heather Pye. And when a church pastor - days later - shared the statistic that if every church in America embraced just one foster child, society could obliterate the foster care system, she felt a calling to be that church family.

“Tim goes big and is all in all the time, and I knew if I said it out loud, I could not take it back, but I just knew the Lord was telling us to do this,” said Heather Pye, her eyes pooling with tears as she stroked her long brown hair cascading down one shoulder.

Wiping her damp cheecks, she added with a laugh, “Tim would take in 20 children if it was up to him.”

The couple prayed and agreed to dip their toe in the swirling pool of foster care by attending an informational seminar with One More Child, where they soon discovered every fear, they harbored about fostering disintegrated. According to the ministry, the process involves training hours, background checks, and home visits that average two months to achieve licensing.

“We learned the biggest need in Manatee County because of the drug abuse is babies,” said Time Pye, whose parents welcomed a total of 95 foster children throughout the years. “Babies are at an age where when they are neglected, they just need to be held.”

Raising her hands up in exclamation Heather Pye clamored to say, “Well, we can hold babies! We can hold babies all day long!”

With eyes still sleepy and hair tossed around from a nap, Elijah shuf f led downstairs in his socks, eager for the weekly FaceTime call with his maternal grandmother. His broad smile and twinkly eyes hint at a sense of humor. He shares a middle name – James – with his adoptive dad and loves his skateboard, anything his older siblings are doing, and ketchup.

He swims like a fish and knee boarded for the first time at four years old. Just before his first birthday, DCF removed him from a neglecting birth mom high on drugs and roaming the streets. “ We h ave a l o n g-te r m, ve r y g o o d relationship with DCF,” said RJ Walters, director of communications for One More Child. “We are so grateful for the people there because their hearts are aligned with ours. The goal is always reunification with a parent or relative. This is always what we are striving for.”

After DCF deemed Elijah’s home unsafe, Tim Pye’s phone rang in the middle of the night with a life-changing request: Could they take Elijah?

‘We were so ready to help keep Elijah safe and healthy, but also bridge a relationship with his birth mom,” said Tim Pye. “Since he was about to turn a year, we took a birthday cake to the park and met his birth mom there. We had many visits. The hope is always for these kids to go back to their parents. We want these parents to get better and for these kids to go home to them.”

The Pyes have celebrated successes like when the twin 8-month-old girls they fostered reunited with a family member.

In awe, they viewed another little girl’s father grow and flourish as a parent so he could gain custody. They have welcomed children, loved them, and waved goodbye through a mix of emotional happy/sad tears streaming down every Pye face.

“The hardest thing about fostering is watching your kids cry when a child we are fostering leaves our home,” said Tim Pye. “They are so helpful and connect with the kids, sometimes sharing a bedroom.”

Walters, who has fostered three children and his wife and ultimately adopted them to join their three biological kids, highlighted the myriad of life lessons and positive impacts fostering can have on biological children.

“One of the biggest misconceptions out there about fostering is that it is hard on the biological children,” said Walters, who shared last year One More Child served 324,409 children through their various programs worldwide. “Sure, some situations are challenging, but the children

in foster families see what compassion looks like. They learn about the journeys of other kids and connect with them.”

Tim and Heather Pye adamantly agree as they have witnessed their children comfort, entertain, build friendships and love the foster kids passing through the Pye Home.

“Our children are learning how a family should work and how hard it is,” said Heather Pye. “They are learning unconditional love.

Our goal is for our children to grow up to be servers of the Lord.”

While goodbyes leave tiny fractures in their hearts, the Pyes, who purchased a custom, stretched SUV to accommodate their ever-changing number of children, see fostering as a permanent way of life for their family.

“We can’t stop now,” said Heather Pye. “I can’t un-see what I have now seen.”

While fostering children has rooted into a calling and passion for the Pyes, it may not fit into the churning wheels of every family.

Walters says the organization stresses opportunities to support families who choose to foster by forming Foster Crews

– a creative and resourceful way for an individual or church to wrap around foster families with support. These crews make up super sitters, household helpers, meal makers, prayer partners, and many other ways to contribute. The Pyes would often come home to diapers left anonymously at their front porch.

“One thing we push is that you don’t have to be a foster parent to make an impact on a child’s life,” Walters said. “We have many ways to get involved.”

Like loving, outstretched arms from an assembly of help, One More Child offers the community support through a kaleidoscope of categories such as feeding the hungry, supporting single moms, and providing safe houses for victims of human trafficking.

According to the organization, more than 10 million children are food insecure in the U.S., and worldwide an estimated 5.2 million children died last year before their 5th birthday due to malnutrition and hunger.

“In 2020, we provided 19 million meals worldwide to children and individuals globally and provided 717,000 diapers to children in need,” Walters said.

In addition, the ministry created a backpack meals program where they supplied more than 625,000 students in local schools with lunches packed in non-descript backpacks.

Serving single moms in our community, One More Child also launched a 10week program that provides classes, mentorship, and resources to boost these struggling women to self-sufficiency.

According to the Kids Count database, more than 24 million children in the United States live in single-parent families.

“We work closely with corporate sponsors like Walmart, Amazon, and Kroger to help with this program,” Froelich said. “This year, Geico helped with their Recycled Rides Program, providing ten re-purposed vehicles for single moms.”

And with Florida home to the third most reported cases of human trafficking than any other state in the nation, One Moe Child has a safe home for victims.

Especially sobering is the fact that 21 percent of the total trafficking victims worldwide are children, according to the International Labor Organization.

While One More Child reacts to the myriad needs of at-risk and struggling families, Walters expressed the organization presses to find forward-thinking approaches.

“How do we as an organization be more forward-thinking and figure out how to actually prevent these situations from ever even happening?” questioned Walters.

Visits with Elijah Pye’s birth mom slowly deteriorated over time. She stopped showing up. The vicious world of drugs rooted firmly in her life, and she floated away into an unengaged parent, putting her desires before Elijah’s. He passed through the Pye home twice as a foster child.

“The second time he came here, he ran through the door and said, ‘I’m home!

Where’s daddy?’” said Heather Pye. When the opportunity presented to adopt Elijah, Tim and Heather Pye quickly realized this was a “no-brainer” because the Pye home was all Elijah had ever really known.

“I explain to Elijah that God made him just for me and that God made me his dad,” said Tim Pye. “He is a Pye. He has always been a Pye.” 21

Nathan Is In With The Bricks…

radenton native Nathan Hoeksema – Chick-fil-A owner, philanthropist, humanitarian, patron, benefactor, supporter, angel.

In June 1993, Nathan was a shy 15-yearold at Bradenton Christian school, looking for a summer job. He had hopes of making enough money to buy his first car. His older sister and some friends from school, worked at the local Chick-fil-A in DeSoto Square mall, so he decided to start the application process there.

He was soon hired to bus tables and clean the dining room for $4.15 an hour. By his late teens, he had become a supervisor, and in 2001 Nathan became one of the youngest Chick-fil-A owners at age 23.

"29 years later, I still have the same job", Nathan jokes. "I fell in love with the people, the process, the company, and what they stand for."

Nathan did not dream of becoming a restaurant owner. His parents had been missionaries, and Nathan thought that

missionary work was his calling as well.

But when he graduated from college in 1999, he found himself struggling with his career decision. As much as he felt that missionary work was his purpose, he did not want to leave his home.

So, he prayed for guidance, feeling confused about the direction he should go. And God answered his prayers, telling Nathan that people in Florida need God's word too.

And Nathan realized that he could go into the mission field through his work right here

in Florida, at Chick-fil-A. It was the decision that transformed his entire life.

And so, when the restaurant in Naples needed his help, he packed up his 1994 Bronco and headed south. Nathan lived in a hotel and worked Monday through Saturday, open to close, for three months.

It was a very difficult time. But, on October 1st of 2000, a Business Consultant from Chick-fil-A contacted him to see if he was interested in becoming the owner of the Naples store.

During Nathan's three years in Naples, sales and profits grew. He had built a great team. At about that same time, the DeSoto Square mall location owner decided to move on after making little profit over six years. This was the restaurant Nathan had started in. It was close to his heart, not to mention family and friends. But, when Nathan asked if he could take it over, they questioned it. He had built himself a successful business in Naples; why would he want to take over a store that had not been profitable in years?

Under Nathan's guidance, the DeSoto Square store flourished, going from $800,000 in sales in 2002 to $1.8 million in 2013, outgrowing that facility and moving to Cortez Plaza in August of 2013. According to Nathan, if you tell him he can't do something, he will prove you wrong. Today, Nathan is the owner of the #10 Chick-fil-A for sales and #3 for transactions in the nation and he just had corporate approval for a second location on Manatee Avenue and 43rd Street. "It's been quite a ride!" he exclaims.

What is Nathan's secret to success? "Stay focused on the people that we work with and dine with, and all else will come," he explains. And Chick-fil-A offers the best products in a clean and safe environment, by people who really care. "And they don't cut corners," he continues, "Everything is hand-breaded, and we use name brand condiments. It really is an extensive process. And the speed of service is huge." According to Nathan, the restaurant serves approximately 200 cars an hour; the record is 265. No other chain comes close. "It's all about convenience. Today, most people want it how they want it and when they want it."

Conveniences such as mobile curbside are growing rapidly. And, though many restaurants are offering home and office delivery through a third party, Chick-fil-A has decided they may be able to do it even better themselves. Nathan volunteered to be one of the first 100 stores to test it out about a year and a half ago, and now there are about 300 stores offering delivery. "As the needs of our customers evolve, we need to evolve as well."

"I love my job!" he exclaims, "It's just so great. I get to make an impact on young people's lives each and every day. Some of them work here, and some of them don't.

And young people are so impressionable.

I love that I can show them that you can run a great business on Christian principles. And not just the kids, but all of our customers as well."

When asked what message he has for young people, Nathan responded with, "It really comes down to two things. Being a

faithful steward and a positive influence.

And that is the Chick-fil-A Corporate Statement." "To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all we come in contact with."

Chick-fil-A was even instrumental in bringing him back together with the girl that became his wife. While Nathan was getting an education at Bradenton Christian School, Cynthia was at Manatee High. They met at a basketball game and dated for about two years during their freshman and sophomore years, but eventually broke up, and Cynthia and her family moved to Georgia.

It wasn't until about 12 years later that Nathan spotted her parents at the DeSoto Square mall while he was working at Chickfil-A. After catching up with them for a bit, he asked them to say "Hi" to Cynthia. And soon after, she reached out to him. Nathan went to Georgia to see her for New Year's Eve, and they were married on April 9th, three months and nine days later.

In the beginning, Cynthia was happy to work and help at the restaurant when needed until their daughter, Cooper, was born in 2009. Now, she is a great ambassador for the brand and the first to help a family in need or in a crisis. The kids, now 10 and 12, love to come in on Saturday mornings. They like to help with the hashbrowns and the condiments at the drive-through. "Even my mom works for me. She is the best employee I ever hired!" Nathan confessed.

Bradenton Christian School and Solve Maternity Homes; and Nathan supports many local organizations throughout the year.

Nathan graduated from, his mom was the Assistant to the Principal, and his son Alvin attends the school now. He even had the same Kindergarten teacher like his Dad. "I just love what the school stands for and does for the kids." Nathan states.

The second is Solve Maternity Homes, a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides cost-free housing, support & hope for women and teens with unplanned pregnancies. His mom volunteered there for years and is now the Director.

And, of course, his Chick-fil-A family.

"Those kids are like my own kids, and I try to help and support them any way that I can.

As my business grows, so does my ability to help people grow. You can't have one without the other." Nathan confides. Nathan currently employs around 180 amazing team members and is hiring.

A Life Transformed

$150,000 RAISED FOR EARLY LEARNING AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Technical College, generating $60,000 in scholarships to benefit future First Responders. The remaining $15,590 raised from the audience will be matched by Florida Pre-Paid, generating $31,180 for scholarships that can be used to support those interested in a career in Early Education.

The recent Manatee County Leadership Prayer Breakfast raised an incredible $150,000 to support Early Learning and help fund scholarships for future First Responders and Early Educators.

Almost 600 people attended the Bradenton Convention Center on Thursday, October 28th, to Honor Our Heroes on National First Responders Day. The event itself generated $59,000 in profit through sponsorships and ticket sales, and this money will be used to support the programs of the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County.

On the morning of the event, an amazing $30,59 0 was raised from the audience in calls for match donations. $15,000 of that sum was matched by Mr. Herb Moller of the Five Talent Fund. That $30,000 was then matched by donors who support Manatee

Ideas for Imaginative Play!

ust imagine! A few kitchen chairs and clean bedsheets become a fortress deep in the Hundred Acre Wood.

One wooden spoon is a microphone, and two more are drumsticks. A stack of old newspapers is a dragon egg of paper mâché waiting to happen. Oh, the possibilities!

Play is a part of evolutionary culture and an essential aspect of your child’s health and development. Play can prepare children for the complexity of everyday life, regulates the body’s response to stress, improves overall brain structure, and promotes a healthy drive for goals. Play and learning are inextricably linked as skills are homed in a fun, imaginative way.

But exactly what does “imaginative play” mean? What are you supposed to do? Will you need to buy certain toys and stock up on crafting materials? What if you only have one child? What if you live in a tiny apartment? What if you have… no… imagination…?

What Is Imaginative Play?

Simply, it’s role play. It’s acting out various tasks and plots. It’s expressing positive and negative feelings, discovering choices, and experiencing the outcome of multiple decisions in a safe, controlled environment. Imaginative play is pretend play. Saving the princess, slaying the dragon, and camping under the living room stars are all age-old examples.

As defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), play “is an activity that is intrinsically motivated, entails active engagement, and results in joyful discovery. Play is voluntary and often has no extrinsic goals; it is fun and often spontaneous.”

“Imaginative” play is different from “active” play. Active play relates to games of tag, swinging on swings, sliding down slides, and hiking through the woods. Imaginative play is make-believe and fantasy. It’s curiouser and curiouser because we can’t wake

up the sleeping giant who sold my gold doubloons to a troll living under the stairs.

Psychologists may define imaginative play as “the acting out of stories which involve multiple perspectives and the playful manipulation of ideas and emotions.” It’s your child making sense of this world.

What are the Benefits of Imaginative Play?

Creative, open-ended play with both peers and parents is how children learn to socially bond, respect others, communicate, and balance personal emotions with the emotions of others.

Play increases the bond between a parent and child, creating a safe, stable, and nurturing relationship. The cognitive, social, emotional, and language development that occurs builds a strong foundation for stress management and social-emotional resilience.

There are many benefits gained when a parent and child engage in healthy, imaginative play together. In addition to those mentioned above, imaginative play can: • lower anxiety • improve academic skills • decrease disruptive behaviors • increase understanding of literature • increase emotional competence • practice and acquire negotiation and sharing skills • express and explore feelings • exercise logical reasoning skills • improve concentration and focus

How Can You Encourage Imaginative Play?

Decide if your entire home is available, if specific areas are off limits, or if only one room is designated for play space - though, one empty corner in a room is all a child really needs. If there isn’t an empty corner to use, go underneath the kitchen table.

There’s no need to spend money on new toys for pretend play.

A cardboard box can turn into a boat, a race car, a dollhouse, or a tunnel portal to another world - everything and anything you or your child can think of. Attach a sheet to the corner and drape the fabric out for a lean-to tent. Canopies and play tents add worlds of fun to imaginative play.

Put a box of dress-up clothes full of hats, scarves, bandannas, old dresses and suits, purses, wigs, gloves, and fake glasses underneath. Add another box full of random odds and ends, like Tupperware containers, plastic flowers, teacups, an old cord phone, an empty paper towel roll, dolls, and stuffed animals.

Make sure you can store these items safely.

Once a month, go through the box, take out a few items and replace them with something else. This will keep your child’s play exciting and inviting. For example, consider turning old, mismatched socks into puppets. If you stumble upon a pair of binoculars in the attic, toss them in.

Make sure all items are safe and age-appropriate for your child (and remember, you will potentially have to listen to anything that creates sound many times).

Show interest in whatever your child does during this pretend play time. Your reinforcement is vital to their self-acceptance and security in openly playing. Let your child run the show. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that learning thrives when children are given control of their actions.

If your child struggles to come up with ideas during play, print or write out various scenarios on small strips of paper, fold them up, and put them into a jar. Whenever your child needs to, they can reach into the jar and pull out an adventure.

If your child asks you to play, say, “Yes!” Try to play with your child every day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Arrange playdates with other children of similar age as often as you can. Using imagination with peers is just as important as with parents but provides other experiences.

One of the most important reasons to incorporate imaginative play into your child’s life is not to push intelligence and education but to provide supportive, warm interactions and relationships.

As a parent, you’ll get to observe your child’s budding interests and have a better understanding of how they communicate.

Ideas for Imaginative Play Birth to 2 years

Imitate the sounds, the coos, and ma-ma-mas your baby makes. When your baby smiles, smile back, this reinforcement is play that reinforces social-emotional skills.

Read stories and sing aloud to your child. Use different voices and facial expressions. Incorporate different rhythms and help your little one put movement to the beat.

Put your baby in a carrier or wrap against your body as you vacuum, sing, and dance - may be to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”?

Hold your baby in different positions to see the world from different perspectives, holding those tiny, little feet, and moving them as if they were pedaling a bicycle.

Play peekaboo. It’s a very important, brain-building game.

Parents will enjoy seeing how the “now I see you, and now I don’t” concept inspires countless little giggles of fun.

Show your baby bright, colorful objects in various shapes.

Let your baby hold these objects, put the objects in their mouth, explore the objects. (First, make sure the objects are safe for baby to play with!)

Hold a mirror in front of your baby’s face and let them see and explore facial expressions.

2 to 5 years of age

Take your child to interesting new places, like the park, zoo, supermarket, beach, and library, to expose different environments, characters, and scenarios and to explore and observe new backgrounds.

Go on a short walk. A 2012 study found that only 51 percent of parents take their children outside to walk or play each day, and some kindergarten classes have removed recess altogether.

On your outings, ask questions. Point out things like a little bug and ask your child what life it would be like if they were that bug. (Can you imagine being that small? Are we giants to that bug? Where will he go if it rains?) Point to a tree and ask your child what they would do if they lived in that tree.

(Should it be hollow so that they can live inside? Does it need a ladder to get up to the higher branches, where they’d build a treehouse? What does the treehouse look like?)

Have a picnic or tea party. Invite stuffed animals, superhero figures, and siblings to attend.

Read to your child regularly. Later, ask your child to recount the story and then act it out. Pay attention to which character they decide to portray. This is where you’ll gain invaluable insight into your child’s inner emotions and outlook on the world around them.

Sing songs and play rhythms together. Find random objects around the house and create a musical band. An empty bucket and a wooden spoon are drums. Rubber bands stretched around an empty shoebox become a guitar. Fill an empty toilet paper roll with dry, uncooked rice and fill an empty can with pennies. Cover and seal off any openings, and you have two shakers with two different sounds. What else can you add to your musical band?

Schedule playdates. Give the children various whimsical scenes and roles to act out. Have them put on a performance.

5 to 7 years of age

Open a restaurant. Let your child plan a menu and have them ask you for your order. Whether they create an imaginary five-course meal at the fanciest of eateries or tell you all about ten disgusting smoothie flavors (banana sparkle pop tart smoothie), try it all. Ask for more. Ask if any specials are being offered. This game provides hours of fun.

Build a city out of Legos or blocks.

Play school. Have your child bring out various stuffed animals, action figures, dolls, and ask your child to be the teacher.

Sing songs and read stories with your child. Mix it up to see if they are paying attention. Say, “Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was white as paper!” Does your child correct you? Does your child join in, adding add another layer of silliness to the next nursery rhyme?

Be explorers. Go for walks outside. Beforehand, make a list of things to find. Along the way, cross each discovered item off the list. Collect unique leaves or rocks.

Turn a cardboard box into… anything. A car, a plane, a turtle shell, a house, a cave… let them decide and see what unfolds.

Write and illustrate a book together. It’s as easy as grabbing a handful of plain, white paper, folding the pages in half, and digging in.

Be scientists! Wear old, oversized, white button-down shirts and fake glasses. Nerd it up. There are many safe experiments with little to no clean-up. For example, make a lava lamp using an empty 2-liter soda bottle, some vegetable oil, food coloring, and fizzing tablets (like AlkaSeltzer). Or make playdough out of flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water.

Takeaway There are so many ways you and your child can come together for imaginative play. Enjoy every moment!

From peekaboo to cops and robbers (and when they are even older, from cosplay and extracurricular activities to college electives), you’ll have direct access to the inner world that is your child’s mind.

he Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) is proud to unveil the newest member of its mobile educational fleet. Meet the Dream Machine, where children are asked to play, dream, and then achieve!

The Dream Machine is a 2001 International 3400 local church bus that was transformed into the ELC’s latest mobile classroom.

The Dream Machine is fully renovated and designed to inspire children to get creative as it boasts a nature-themed interior with puffy white clouds, a whimsical sunshine, a tree of books, and flying birds.

Currently, this vehicle is intended to operate the ELC’s ReadingPals program and assist in the implementation of other programs such as CATCH, STEAM and Words on the Bus. ReadingPals has a history in Manatee County but has not been operational for a few years.

With this vehicle, ELC is reviving ReadingPals to help boost literacy scores around Manatee County. ReadingPals volunteers are asked to mentor children one-to-one or in small groups 52

supporting three pillars: 21st-century skills using computers, socioemotional development, and of course, improving literacy rates.

The Dream Machine was largely funded through Manatee County’s Soar In 4 initiative and will attend the Soar in 4 monthly events to support the united mission of improving educational experiences for all children in the county.

ELC is also eternally grateful to the business partners who have supported the early education mission. hanks to our PTO Officers, the Knights of Columbus, and our many volunteers and staff, St Joseph Catholic School had a wonderful Fun Family Night in October celebrating Día de Los Muertos. Multiple families came together to create a Dia de Los Muertos shrine for the evening, and middle school students created sugar skulls with the names of deceased relatives and friends written on the back. There were games, face painting, hot dogs, and the evening ended with an outdoor movie with popcorn.

ith the holiday season here, there is plenty to be thankful for, but also, please remember to keep safety in mind.

Here is a list of holiday safety tips:

• Choose a tree with fresh green needles

• Choose flame-resistant decorations

• Cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk prior to placing the tree into the base

• Keep lit candles away from kids and pets

• Add water to base daily

• Some lights are only for indoor and outdoor

• Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory

• Use clips, not nails, to hang lights

• Never use lit candles to decorate a tree

• Keep decorations away from windows and doors

• Always turn off lights on the tree before bed and when leaving the house

• Test your smoke alarms • Stay in the kitchen while cooking • Do not deep-fry a frozen turkey Two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles.

Fostering Family Fun! F

amilies across the area and world are increasingly scurrying to outlets and malls, wrapping the holiday presents, and rushing to make it to the choir recitals.

They're trying to remember the reason for the season and thoughtfully being generous to neighbors and teachers, all the while hustling to wrap up loose ends at work for a few precious days off.

This holiday, there's also an added sense of urgency since last year was short on socializing with the pandemic in full swing. We want 60

to make up for lost time, and this is a good thing. We need one another. Doing life completely is not just a mentally healthy option.

But with all of the "doings" that are or at least seem to be necessary functions, sometimes the simple acts of just being together with our families can get lost.

We can ignore the most important people to us, forgetting one another's needs and the importance of true connection time if we're not careful.

In fact, since all of the villains of great film literature are now getting their own backstory these days (Cruella, Willy Wonka), if we spend time looking back with a fuller view of one of Dickens' classic favorites, we'll find that even old Ebenezer Scrooge had one thing to teach us...

Less is often more.

Not in the greedy way where we hoard and resist generosity, abandoning one another's needs for our own but in the way of knowing this…

It's OK to take one day a week to just rest and be together, even during the busy holidays.

Here are six ways to not "do" but just to pause and to "be" together this season. Choose at least one of them and put it on the calendar today so you can rest assured you're remembering the best of both worlds, resting well and giving well. Don't forget to give yourself a bit of time to decompress if you tend to struggle with slowing down. Take a hot bath, light a candle, or go for a jog in the morning. Then take some time to just be together in one or more of the following ways:

1.

Make cookies together. We always do twelve different batches and give many of them away. We enjoy the day so much partly because this project takes everything else off the calendar for just one day (except a trip to Publix, of course!), and that feels really good.

2. Attend a religious service together. But instead of sending everyone off to classes, sit together. Although the classes are great all year long, it's a great memory for kids to get to see their often frazzled parents in thoughtfulness and gratitude and to have that familiar arm around you as you quietly contemplate and grow spiritually in wisdom and love together.

Have a movie marathon family day. Get in your holiday pajamas or fun Christmas socks and watch Elf, Christmas with the Kranks, It's A Wonderful Life or your own holiday fave! At night, sip chamomile tea together and read segments from "A Christmas Carol" and have fun poking fun at old Scrooge together (even while appreciating his desire for rest)!

Spend time serving together at home for someone outside of the family. Call a nursing home and find out what small gifts or wrapped goodies are allowable, shop for a Compassion holiday box together, or make a hearty soup for a sick neighbor. Carefully put this loving gift together as you sip hot cocoa at home. If you're a bit pressed for time or you're a family who loves your tech, use your time together to shop online Samaritan's Purse catalog and discuss over fast food which gift you will choose. Giving in secret is a wonderful family tradition also, and some families enjoy choosing who they will serve anonymously, which is a great lesson in humility.

Lastly, don't forget this fabulous time of year in Florida for family fitness. It's time to enjoy those gorgeous ocean paths at Robinson or Emerson Point Preserve, spend a day swimming at the beach, reserving a ride on a golf cart on Anna Maria, or getting your blogilates workout on with YouTube as we do in between all the cookies!

utumn skies cloaked in shadow and misty rain hovered above an emerald green pasture, as 12-year-old Mason Kramer – donning a tucked-in black T-shirt, red plaid button-down, jeans, boots, and a curved-rim, suede cowboy hat – sauntered proudly into a dim-lit barn clutching a rope that led his beloved Donkey across the damp, brick pavers.

"I am so grateful for this place," said Laura Kramer, Mason's mom. "Mason can just be Mason here because the animals don't judge him. Here he works on independence, comprehension, sequencing, and spending time at the barn serves as a huge motivator for him to get what he needs to do at home done. If we can't get here, he checks on Donkey from home with the camera."

As a drafty breeze whistled through the barn, Kramer stood center stage with a smile brighter and bigger than his oversized belt buckle. Most afternoons, you can find Kramer – a middle-schooler with Down's Syndrome who loves ballroom dancing, cooking up zucchini chips, and cracking jokes – at the barn practicing his reading to Donkey with horse Willow grazing nearby.

Stretching out into a field of green laced with white pasture fences, Cavelli Creek Farms partnered with the Special Olympics Florida, Manatee County in 2018 to build an equestrian program serving children with special needs in the community by offering ten riding lessons to each child November-March. However, standing in the cozy barn lined with wooden stalls and iron latches in the spring of 2020, Hooves with H.E.A.R.T founder and President Danielle Curtis brainstormed a way to keep kids in the saddle year-round with the birth of her non-profit.

Perched on a bed of hay, Kramer often reads and pushes through weekday homework among the ten horses and five cats at Hooves with H.E.A.R.T., a non-profit that channels support and hope to individuals with special needs through equine-assisted activities and riding therapies. And when hospital testing or busy weeks pull Kramer away from his favorite animal buddy, Kramer peers into the barn through his V.I.P access, Donkey Cam.

"Horseback riding not only develops muscle strength but also teaches discipline, self-control, and patience," said Curtis, who grew up riding horses in New York. "It lays the groundwork of bonding with these animals, instilling empathy, compassion, and 63

dedication. We didn't want these kids to lose all the progress they made during the Special Olympics season by having to stop."

Existing on donations, community support, a small but mighty core of passionate volunteers, and space donated by the farm owner, Bonnie Golino, the non-profit currently serves 18 children who ride weekly. They participate in lessons that are designed to improve physical and mental disabilities, cognitive and behavioral issues, and social interactions while promoting self-confidence to those with special needs.

"What truly sets us apart is we are one of the few riding centers that provide groundwork activities for those with special needs like grooming, leading, and barn work," said Curtis, who started the program after witnessing the benefits of horse riding for her own daughter, Madison, who has ADHD. "These activities allow the kids to truly connect with the animals."

The quiet, safe, and welcoming barn lured in Austin Ford, a 21-yearold on the autism spectrum, to swing by and volunteer most days after work, tending to the barn and animals. A calm, shy person, Ford would not make eye contact and rarely said more than a couple of one-word answers to others at the barn when he first discovered the facility. Now he is quick to strike up a chat and even coach other volunteers on the right way of barn work. Even horse Valentino, who can show a feisty streak, gravitates toward Ford, following him around the pasture and lowering his head for some love.

"This place is a miracle," said Ford's mom, Susan Ford, who also serves on the board of Hooves with H.E.A.R.T. "Austin has grown and changed so much since he started here. Now he doesn't stop talking."

When Austin Ford's anxiety over a new job interview surged, the Hooves with H.E.A.R.T volunteers huddled around him at the barn and coached him on interview tips – what to say, what to wear.

"These kids are all of our kids, and we love them like they are our own," said Curtis, her eyes pooling with tears. "We truly care about them and celebrate their progress and success."

Exuding kindness and a problem-solving, positive look at life, Curtis talks with an exciting speed, gushing over the kids and dedicated volunteers who help keep the gears of Hooves with H.E.A.R.T churning. She stresses every volunteer involved also juggles a full-time career.

"These kids matter so much to us," said Curtis, who shared goals of growing a carrot garden for the horses and building a covered arena for the riders. "At the end of my workday, coming here is such a relief. Our volunteer program offers high school kids community service hours and even younger kids the chance to contribute to their community. We even have a grandmother who helps us garden and pulls weeds while her grandson rides. The support has been amazing."

Crossing the pasture to peek in on the horses, volunteer riding coach Susannah Cripe offers the program more than 30 years of non-profit work with children and adults. Her sense of humor, generous smiles, and laid-back nature allow her to bridge deep connections with the kids.

"Here, the kids are just having fun," said Cripe, who also pointed out the program takes children as young as 3 or 4 years old.

"We're not cranky ever. We sing songs, and we don't have to be on a time schedule. If a kid wants to come here and play in the mud, they can play in the mud. We are relaxed and just want the kids to have a good time."

However, Cripe also highlighted the importance and benefits of the annual Special Olympics.

"The competition is so good for the kids because they have to learn how to interact with the judges, how to enter and exit an arena and deal with larger crowds," said Cripe. "They gain the confidence of doing all this in front of people."

Eyes scanning the barn, Curtis is quick to share that the non-profit could not reach kids without the gift of space donated by Bonnie Golino's farm owner.

"If it wasn't for Bonnie, we could not do this," said Curtis, hand resting on her heart. "She is the most genuinely kind person and allows us to use her property so we can do this. She also has two horses of her own that she allows us to use. We are so grateful for her."

As the rain thickened and lantern lights flickered on through the barn, Madison Curtis – sporting work boots and a pullover sweatshirt – blew hay from the breezeway with a leaf blower. At age 11, she asked for riding lessons from her parents, who believed the activity would provide coping skills for her ADHD. Now at 18, she is studying to become a nurse.

"As a mom of a daughter with ADHD, and someone who does not have that, I had no idea what that meant and had to learn about what was going on in her head," said Danielle Curtis. "I saw the many benefits of horse riding, but I also connected with the moms because it is the moms who are doing the work. They are the reason their kids are progressing."

Progress keeps the volunteers eager to drop by the barn and support the kids. Huddled in a circle near the horse stalls, a handful of helpers lit up with warm happiness as they excitedly reminisced about kids at the barn – kids uttering words for the first time, taking first steps, conquering fears of mounting a horse or navigating barn work. They turned to Mason Kramer as he lovingly stroked Donkey and praised him.

Beaming, Mason Kramer's cheeks blushed. He dreams of professionally training horses one day and living in a barn. He hopes to take up line dancing and never stray too far from Donkey.

Boots clicking across the pavers, he eagerly dashed across the way to scoop up his favorite book, The Adventures of Oti and Valentina, and tote it back over to Donkey.

"He's the sweetest Donkey ever," said Mason Kramer. "I like the horses and the people here. I like to read to Donkey. I really like spending time with him."

A Trip Down Holiday Lane I can’t believe that this year is almost over, and the Winter Holidays are already upon us. Of course, that started me thinking about crafts that my kids could create for gifts. This process also made me a bit nostalgic about the Christmases I spent with my grandparents when I was a little girl.

Many of the decorations on my Grandparents’ trees were handmade. Some of these ornaments were from friends, others from my parents, and many created by my aunts, sisters, and myself. There were even a variety of beaded ornaments in the shapes of wreaths, angels, bells, and snowflakes.

Of course, what truly made these special was that they came from a person that was close to them.

Speaking of beaded ornaments, this is an activity that is not only great for hand-eye coordination but encourages children to use their creativity through designs and color combinations. Plus, these crafts make a great addition to a gift and work well to decorate wreaths, doorknobs, or greenery on the outside of your home.

If you would like to recreate these beaded ornaments with your family, you will need the following: metallic pony beads, mini bells, fuzzy sticks and paper clips Tip: Most of these items can be located at a dollar store or local craft store.

DIRECTIONS: To begin the craft, first decide what holiday shape your child wants to make. I took a few fuzzy sticks and molded them out to look like a wreath, tree, and bell. We then kept them out as a guide as to what the ornaments would look like.

Then, it is time to select the beads for the design. These shapes required about 32 beads each and one bell. Before we got started, my daughter went ahead and determined her patterns and decided where she would place the bells.

Tip: We put the bells at the top of the wreath and Christmas Tree and added the one to the center of the bell shape.

Next, have your child start to thread the fuzzy stick through the beads. Once they are on, simply crisscross twice at the top to keep the beads from sliding off. Then, create another loop on the top so the ornament can be hung on a tree. When it is time to start adding these creations to a home, use the paper clips as hangers.

Shepherd’s Pie INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup olive oil, divided • 2 cups beef or vegetable stock • 1 lb. ground beef or turkey • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour • 2 packages mashed potatoes • 2-3 stalks celery, sliced thinly • 1 cup carrots, sliced thinly • 2-3 cloves garlic • 1/2 medium-sized onion • 1 cup frozen peas • Chopped chives (optional)

No-Bake Cookie Dough Balls INGREDIENTS • 1 cup old fashioned oats • 1/2 cup unsweetened

or sun butter

• 1/2 cup peanut butter

PREPARATION

• 1/2 cup ground flax seed • 1/2 cup chocolate chips • 1/3 cup honey or agave nectar • 1 tablespoon chia or hemp seeds • One teaspoon vanilla extract • sprinkles

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Heat 2 tsp. of the olive oil in a large skillet over

medium heat. Add celery and carrots to the skillet and sauté for 3-5 minutes to soften. Add in the onions and garlic and sauté for 2 more minutes.

2. While the veggies are cooking, warm the beef or vegetable stock in a small saucepan over medium heat.

3. Transfer the veggies to a bowl and set aside.

4. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp of olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat.

5. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until the meat is no longer pink.

1. Place all of the ingredients except the sprinkles in a food pr o c e s s or a n d p u l s e u nt i l thoroughly combined.

2. Use your hands to roll the mixture into 1-inch balls, then roll in the sprinkles.

3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.and serve.

6. While the meat is cooking, prepare the mashed potatoes according to package directions.

7. Turn the stove down to medium-low heat and sprinkle the flour over the cooked meat. Stir together and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

8. Add 1 1/2 cups warm stock to the beef and stir quickly to prevent lumps as the sauce can thicken quickly. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes and then remove the skillet from the heat.

9. Return the vegetable mixture to the skillet and add in the frozen peas.

Stir to combine.

10. Combine the mashed potatoes with the remaining 1/2 cup of stock and mix well.

11. Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture into a 9x9 baking dish and gently spread the mashed potatoes over the top as evenly as possible.

12. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, then turn the oven up to 400° and bake for an additional 10 minutes to ensure that the vegetables have fully softened.

13. Let cool slightly, top with chives, and enjoy!

here did you come from? Bradenton was established less than 150 years ago, which means that if you live here, you came from somewhere else. Whether your family settled here generations ago or just moved, we all bring a piece of our original home with us. Our roots often show in not only what we cook but in how we cook it.

In my family, my grandmothers revealed their place of origin through cornbread. Both lived in Manatee County, one on Ware’s Creek and one on Anna Maria Island. However, my Grandmother Pace, born in Indiana, baked sweet cornbread, but my Grandma Bayless, raised in Alabama, preferred a saltier blend. I loved both my grandmothers very much and always think of them when I make cornbread, whatever recipe I choose.

Julia Atzeroth immigrated to Manatee County from Germany. She, her husband, Joseph, and their daughter, Eliza, arrived on Terra Ceia Island in the northwest part of Manatee County in 1843. Julia was known for her cooking, particularly her baking of recipes brought with her from her homeland.

The problem she faced was that many of the ingredients she needed were not available on the Florida frontier. Salt came from boiling seawater. Sugar squeezed from stalks of sugar cane was coarse and brown instead of fine and white. Apples would not grow in west Florida, so she planted citrus trees and substituted oranges in her recipes instead. No matter the substitutions, everyone loved Julia’s cooking.

For a time, Julia worked as a cook for the commander of an Army camp called Fort Brooke, located where Tampa is today.

There, she met many of Florida’s early residents, including Holata Micco, the Seminole Indian chief also known as Billy Bowlegs.

Julia and Billy became friends. He continued to visit her when the Atzeroth family lived on Terra Ceia. It was said that Billy always arrived at mealtime.

Just like Julia and Billy, no matter how different we are or where we came from, cooking together, sharing meals, and exchanging recipes build friendship and understanding. When we come together over a meal, what we eat is important because it shares a piece of who we are and what made us that way. It reminds us that while we are all from somewhere else, we are also humans, dependent on food not only for survival but connection.

Bring friends, family, neighbors, even strangers closer together in your kitchen and at your table for good food and good conversation. What are your stories about bringing people together with meals? To this day, my family doesn’t care if the cornbread is salty or sweet because it is always served with love.

Suncoast Remake Learning Days is a 10-day festival that celebrates the many learning opportunities in our community.

This celebration highlights innovative experiences and opportunities for youth and participants of all ages to develop their sense of creativity, perseverance, and curiosity.

Establishments, including schools, museums, libraries, after-school organizations, early child care centers, colleges, universities, media centers, faith-based organizations, businesses, tech startups, and other entities, will open their doors to welcome families. Operations will also travel into neighborhoods to host hands-on, engaging educational experiences for Pre-K through high school youth and their families, caregivers, and educators. These events are free and open to all.

Suncoast Remake Learning Days events are organized by different learning themes such as arts, maker, outdoor learning, science, technology, and youth voice. Events can fall under one or more learning themes, and each event’s learning themes will be identified by the icons below: Arts – Arts features hands-on learning and expression through theatre, dance, visual art, music, photography, and other creative outlets.

eading Rainbow is an American educational children's television series that originally aired on PBS from July 11, 1983, to November 10, 2006. This valuable show emphasized and encouraged children to dive into the world of reading. The show also educated the viewers on how to use a library to find these cherished books.

If there is one constant throughout the decades, it is the high value placed on reading books. Literacy development is a vital gauge of success in school and life, and it often leads to a better, more balanced life. For this valuable reason, the School District of Manatee County and Manatee Libraries joined efforts to bring a treasure of reading resources and opportunities to families in Manatee County through the All-Access Pass.

The All-Access Pass is an extraordinary initiative that will help students and families access the vast resources at the public library.

The All-Access Pass is a partnership between Manatee County Public Library and the school district, giving all enrolled K-12 students access to public library resources with their Student ID number.

By removing the physical barrier of coming to the library to get a card, this program expands resources to students in their homes, classrooms, and wherever they need access. As Christian Lauersen stated, "Libraries, in the past, the present, and the future, are the memory and workshop of humanity." However, if the children cannot go to the library, the library can now be accessible through All-Access Pass.

Successful implementation of the All-Access Pass on September 9, 2021, can be attributed to The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

This beneficial collaboration between community foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states, and communities across the nation ensures that more children excel in school and graduate with the skills to flourish in college, a career, and society.

Dr. Sheila Halpin is the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Coordinator for Manatee County Schools and has experience with

Manatee County schools for 32 years. Dr. Halpin proudly states, "I have the opportunity to engage our community, mobilize to remove barriers, expand opportunities, and assist parents in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities to serve as full partners in the success of their children and to assure student success." The most rewarding part of her job is empowering families with the skills and resources to be their child's best teacher.

Superintendent Cynthia Saunders also propelled the community to join forces and eliminate barriers that hindered some children from achieving grade-level reading by the end of third grade because their families did not have the support or resources to succeed. Research has shown that proficiency in reading by the end of third grade enables the students to move from learning to read to reading to learn and comprehend more intense subject matter. "This new partnership with Manatee County government will help broaden reading and learning opportunities for young families who live here now and for years to come," she declared with sincere delight.

Manatee County Public Schools and the Manatee County Public Library support students' ongoing education. We share the belief that a love of reading and learning is a cornerstone for student 87

success and that equity in our community can be built through unrestricted access to information and resources. With these shared goals in mind, we worked together to ensure that every Manatee County student has access to books and resources found at both their school and public libraries.

The All-Access Pass will allow students to check out books and other materials in the library. Still, it will also give them access to so much more because students will be able to access an amazing array of digital resources with their Student ID card number. County Administrator Dr. Scott Hopes said, "students will have access to much more than just books. They can take advantage of oneon-one tutoring through Tutor.com, the opportunity to practice languages using the Mango app, and access to LinkedIn Learning, which helps students develop computer, career and literacy skills."

Student ID numbers will also give students access to downloadable eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, music, and magazines. Elementary students' ID numbers can be found in the FOCUS parent portal located at www.manateeschools.net/focus. Middle & High School students may scan their ID badges or enter their numbers manually at the library or online.

An important thing to also consider is that learning is not exclusive to reading books. Richard Branson proudly appreciates how expertise comes from exploring the world. He has stated, "The best way of learning about anything is by doing." Another valuable component of the All-Access Pass is that it permits students to explore interests and hobbies by checking out items from the Library of Things, which includes telescopes, musical instruments, literacy kits, and museum passes.

These are instigators to discover all the world has to offer outside of school. Wonder, excitement, and dreams amplify in the hearts of the students when subjects are presented in a fun and encouraging format. This is also a way for them to connect to other students with common interests, who they might not normally meet in their own schools. Through a variety of Kids and Teen programs in the community, their people skills will develop as well.

Dr. Sheila Halpin is extremely humbled by the generosity and actions of the community and all those that brought forth the institution of All-Access Pass. She expresses, "Collectively; our community is working to improve school and life outcomes for children from low-income families by getting more kids to read proficiently." She further expands her dedication to the children through her involvement with the Soar in 4 program.

Soar in 4 empowers families to be their child's first literacy teacher by providing monthly play and learn opportunities where families receive materials to support their child's literacy development at home. As a past teacher, counselor, and administrator with her doctorate in education, Dr. Halpin embraced the need of students and saw these programs to ascend new levels of prosperity.

Dedication and perseverance towards achieving one's goals can best be mirrored in the minds of children when they are blessed with the tools and techniques to do the same. There is a rainbow of possibilities with the embrace of the All-Access Pass.

THE WONDER OF WOMEN...

he past year and a half have been some of the most challenging times we've seen at the Women's Resource Center. The pandemic has profoundly impacted our community and the women and families we serve. In response, the Women's Resource Center has evolved and created new systems and channels to help our clients meet the increased need for mental health services, employment coaching, connection to resources, financial assistance, and more.

A change in how we offer programming was not the only shift that occurred within th e W RC. A s i n-p e r s o n g ath e r i n g s became difficult in 2020, we knew we needed to change our traditional special event model in a way that we could

continue to connect the community with our mission. We launched the Wonder Women Collective in October of last year. The Wonder Women Collective is a platform for women in our community to connect, share ideas and empower each other.

Our goal was and remains to create spaces where women can come together to share ideas and concerns—and a place where they can find encouragement and learn from one another. The diverse mix of participants in the first year of the Collective is what makes these sessions invaluable.

The participants include donors, community members, WRC clients, volunteers, and staff.

The second year of the Collective will launch on December 2nd with an inperson event. Some exciting additions to the Collective include a new partner, Game On Nation, a local organization that offers Entertainment Technology. Game On Nation will provide interactive presentations that engage and educate participants. They will kick off the year with a session focused on self-care.

If you have ever been on a plane, they always tell you during the safety demonstration that you have to put your oxygen mask on first before you can help others. As women, we tend to focus on the needs of others first.

We hope you will join us in learning tools and strategies on how we can make sure to take care of ourselves first. Not only does it help us, but it also helps our family and work-life as well.

Do You Wanna Build A Robot ?

t Tara Elementar y School in Brad e nton, 28 stud e nts a re learning to build and code their own robots! Tara is one of only about 10 schools in Manatee County to offer the very popular Robotics Club. If they qualify, these schools will compete against each other at the regional tournament for the honor of battling it out at the state competition this year. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and conclude at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April.

WORDS: Sheri Roca PICTURES: Whitney Patton This is year three for Tara's Robotics Club, led by STEM teacher Katie Van Beveren. STEM: or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, is one of the "specials" taught at Tara and many of our Manatee County Elementary schools. In fact, Manatee County is leading the state of Florida in offering innovative projects related to STEM education.

The Club is open to all 4th and 5thgrade students, but only 28 student slots were available. Because there were 76 interested aspiring Robotics Engineers,

an application process was required.

A questionnaire and an essay by each student, as to the reason they would like to be part of the Robotics Club and why they think they would make a good team member, was the basis of the application.

The questions also related to what types of previous experiences they may have had with similar projects, like building with Legos, coding, and video games.

The Club meets two nights a week, with some of the teams meeting on

Wednesdays as an after-school club and some on Thursdays as part of the Knights Academy after-care program. I had the privilege of meeting the four dynamic teams that meet on Wednesdays.

When I asked a few of the teammates why they wanted to be a part of the Robotics club, I repeatedly heard one, almost unanimous answer: "I like to build things!"

One teammate recalled earlier robots with awe, stating, "Last year's robots were so cool, I just wanted to build one too!". "I just love technology!" was another enthusiastic answer. "I love Legos and coding, and I really wanted to be involved in an afterschool club," responded another. And an equally excited club member recalled how much he loved building Legos with his

brother. It seemed that everyone there was in their element and thrilled to be a part of the Robotics club.

So, how does a 4th or 5th grader build a robot? It begins with deciding and agreeing upon which style of robot would be best for the job at hand. Each team first determines which of the robotic kits available will be able to score the most points in this year's competitive challenge. They will also need to consider the robot's dimensions and its ability to maneuver under, over, or around the hurdles on the playing field.

And this year's VEX IQ Challenge, dubbed "Pitching in" by VEX Robotics, is no easy contest! Students will be tasked to design and build a robot that can score the most

points by throwing balls into a goal, clearing the corral of balls, and hanging from a bar at the end of the game. The 28 club members will also need to construct an exact model of the competition playing field for practice and problem-solving opportunities. And they are going to accomplish it all in approximately one hour a week (and leave enough time for clean-up).

The students will start by building their team's chosen robot to specification.

Then later, if they choose, they will have the option of modifying or customizing the robot to better achieve the challenges of the game, like adding hooks that it could hang from, or simply changing its esthetics, like adding lights or even speakers for sound.

How complicated could it be? According to the VEX Robotics Website, www. vexrobotics.com, each kit contains more than 1,700 parts, including a Robot Brain!

The Brain connects the entire robot together and includes a color screen for "quick and easy control." There is also a controller to enable wireless driving and code download, an Optical Sensor to let the robot see light, color, and gestures.

A distance sensor uses safe lasers to accurately detect distances without interference. The Touch LED provides human touch input to the robot and color output to human eyes. The bumper allows the robot to feel when it hits a wall or another robot. And, most importantly, the smart motors that make it all come to life with power and precision.

This brings us to the competition. And the competition is fierce. In the Grade 4-8 level, there are more than 8,500 teams from 45 countries playing in over 900 tournaments around the world. The VEX Robotics competitions and programs are managed by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation. In April 2018, VEX Robotics Competition was named the largest robotics competition in the world by Guinness World Records.

The VEX IQ Challenge, "Pitching In," is played on a 6' x 8' rectangular field configured specifically for the challenge at hand. The first challenge is the Teamwork Challenge. Two teams will work together in a 60-second-long teamwork match, in which both teams' robots will work collaboratively to score points. Teams also compete in the Robot Skills Challenge, where one robot takes the field to score as many points as possible. These matches consist of both Driving Skills Matches, which will be entirely driver-controlled and Programming Skills Matches, which will be autonomous with limited human interaction.

This is where coding skills come in.

Just imagine all the skills required of these nine and 10-year-olds to work together to build a competitive robot.

First, all four aspects of STEM education are utilized. And, although some may be born with a certain ingenuity or ability to think like an Engineer, building a competitive robot is not simply about the engineering aspects. Important life skills

like teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking skills are key on a robotics team.

Not to mention an abundance of creativity and communication. A club like this is an amazing opportunity to grow, learn and has many ways for students to get involved.

As I explore Ms. Van Beveren's classroom, I notice that the walls are lined with messages for the students, reminding young, wouldbe Scientists and Engineers that "Engineers work together, all ideas are valued" and "Listen to all directions before touching any materials." Whether rules to be followed or words to the wise, it is good advice for all.

ELEMENTARY NEWS! ISLAND ADVENTURES! Fifth-grade students at Anna Maria Elementary School have been studying the structures of plants and animals and identifying adaptations needed to survive in their habitat. Mrs. Davis' class recently put on their lab coats and dissected squid.

STEM AT STEWART… Here's a great example of Education with Innovation and Imagination in Manatee County schools. You may not know the term, but if you've ever seen "The Goonies" or "Back to the Future," you'll recognize a Rube Goldberg Machine. It's a device made using a series of levers, pulleys, and connections to complete a simple task. Students from grades one to five are currently building their Rube Goldberg Machines at Stewart Elementary School!

Before their lab investigation, students researched the anatomy of a squid, sketched diagrams, labeled internal and external structures, then explained the specific adaptations of the squid. Following their research and study, the fifth-grade scientists dissected and put their research into a real-life experience.

Now that's Education with Innovation and Imagination!

STEM Teacher John Schultz says this is just the beginning of a year-long project that incorporates engineering and physics. He is teaching students to use gravity and the forces of motion to create a chain reaction of events in a systematic order. Students build their machines outside with simple materials like cardboard, plastic containers, playing cards, and dominoes.

Eventually, the STEM classes will discuss what works or doesn't work to improve their project before building and testing it again. Finally, groups of students will build higherquality machines that all connect together.

RED RIBBON WEEK… Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23rd through October 31st. The mission of the campaign is to help keep kids drug-free. Various Manatee County schools hosted Spirit Days to show their support.

Bayshore High School encouraged their students and staff to wear red. Abel Elementary and Manatee Elementary had themes such as "Crazy Sock" or "Crazy Hat" days. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States.
