MTC’s Continuing Education classes are geared to individuals or groups who want to upgrade their current skills for job retention or promotion. The process for enrolling in one of these classes will vary from program to program. Saunders was a good selection. She and her district leadership team had been monitoring the spread of the novel Coronavirus since mid-February. Two days prior to hearing from the Governor’s office, the Superintendent had devoted a special section of the district website to “Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates and Information.”

While she was in Tampa meeting with Gov. DeSantis and his team, Saunders had Deputy Superintendent of Operations Doug Wagner place large orders for hand sanitizer, masks, gloves, and other protective materials. The early orders were advantageous as supplies of materials were quickly depleted.

Later in March, when school districts were told students would not be returning to school campuses, Saunders spearheaded a massive movement that helped the School District of Manatee County become one of the first districts in the state prepared to deliver full-time online instruction, known as eLearning. The district was able to transition swiftly because they had installed a new learning management system named Schoology two years earlier, allowing teachers to interact and share academic information online with students.

During those initial days of the pandemic, Saunders sought out inventive ways to utilize district resources to enhance eLearning and fight the virus’s spread.

t was Sunday, March 1, 2020. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had just announced the first two confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state of Florida, and one was a 69-year-old resident of Manatee County.

After the district distributed more than 11,000 laptop devices to students, Saunders was approached by the district’s Chief Technology Officer Scott Hansen about placing internet hotspots on district school buses. Saunders quickly adopted the idea, and partnerships were organized with churches and community centers around Manatee County. The buses could be stationed so students could get access to free internet to continue their lessons. Since buses weren’t running, Saunders repositioned some district bus drivers to custodial positions to provide additional assistance in deep cleaning district facilities.

That afternoon, School District of Manatee County Superintendent Cynthia Saunders was contacted by the Governor’s office. She was asked to join Gov. DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez, and State Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees in Tampa the next morning, March 2, 2020, to discuss how the state would respond to the COVID crisis. She was the only school superintendent invited.

She also worked with district Food and Nutrition Director Regina Thoma to make sure vital meal services to students were maintained by setting up more than 40 “Grab and Go” sites where parents could pick up pre-packaged breakfasts and lunches. In total, between March and May 2020, the district handed out more than 960,000 meals to students. During the following summer months, the district distributed an additional 570,000 meals.

As the new school year approached, she worked closely with district principals and leaders to provide three different modalities of instruction for students and parents (full-time brick and mortar; full-time eLearning and a hybrid option that combined brick and mortar learning and eLearning). She also oversaw the development of a District Operations Center (DOC) to include district safety and security personnel as well as representatives of the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County. The purpose of the DOC was to deal quickly and directly with COVID cases in schools and support sites.

The attributes displayed by Superintendent Saunders throughout the COVID crisis are indicative of her leadership style. She attacks challenges head-on, and she incorporates imagination and innovation into her decision making as she works tirelessly to drive the district forward.

A Record of Advancement

Challenges Ahead Superintendent Saunders is well aware of the challenges facing the school district. She cites the ongoing battle with COVID-19 as the primary challenge because it directly impacts students and staff’s health and safety. Looming budget cuts resulting from COVID-19 are also a concern, as is the renewal of the one-mill increase. However, based on her track record and her belief in the students, teachers, parents, and others surrounding and supporting her, she ultimately sees good things ahead for the School District of Manatee County.

“The people of this community and the employees of this school district are amazing,” Saunders said. “When times get tough, the people of this community come together, especially to support our children. As I have said before, and I am sure I will say again, ‘Manatee County always rises to the occasion.’”

When Saunders first came to Manatee County as the Executive Director of Secondary Schools in 2013, the district had 18 D or F schools. By the time she finished her first year as Superintendent in 2019, the district had eliminated all F schools, and the number of D schools was reduced to two.

In addition, after being a C school district four-out-of five years from 2012 to 2016, the district garnered three consecutive B grades from the state. In 2019, the district finished just shy of an A grade.

Financially, the district raised its fund balance from $30.2 million to more than $34.7 million during her first year as Superintendent.

And thanks to the voter-approved, one-mill increase, all teachers received pay increases, and starting pay for first-year teachers in Manatee County became ranked among the highest in the state.

However, Saunders’ signature achievements have introduced exciting new initiatives and learning opportunities to students across the district.

In 2019, Palm View K-8 School became the first WOZ Ed Pathway school in the nation. Named after Apple Inc., co-founder Steve Wozniak, WOZ Ed Pathway programs help prepare students for the jobs of the future by offering educational opportunities in areas such as coding, engineering, drones, cyber-security, and mobile development. In 2019, the district launched its first Community Partnership School at Manatee Elementary, its first Dual Language Program at Daughtrey Elementary, and transformed Blackburn Elementary School into a Cambridge International School.

During the last year, to expand access to health care, the school district opened school-based health clinics on the campuses of Southeast High School and Manatee Elementary in collaboration with MCR Health. The district is currently working on expanding access further through the introduction of telehealth services.

Another important leadership milestone was reached on her watch in September 2020, when the School Board approved a new strategic plan to guide the school district through 2022.

Food For Thought…

Inside Feeding Tampa Bay with Thomas Mantz, President and CEO. INTERVIEW: Kara Chalmers

O

ne Thanksgiving, years ago, when he worked in the financial industry in Manhattan, Thomas Mantz decided he’d like to volunteer at a food bank for the holiday.

He called a local bank and asked if he could help. The man who answered the phone said thanks, but no.

“He said, ‘We don’t need you. Everyone and their brother want to give out food on Thanksgiving. People are hungry 365 days

a year. Come another day,’” Mantz said.

What the man said stuck with Mantz, and a few months later, he found himself volunteering for God’s Love We Deliver.

Its mission is to help people with HIV/ AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses by preparing and delivering nutritious and free meals to people too sick to feed themselves.

Mantz chopped vegetables, answered phones and met many people he probably

wouldn’t have met otherwise. Six months after that, he gave notice at his job.

Since then, Mantz has spent 20 years in the nonprofit sector, believing he has an opportunity and obligation to serve. His first nonprofit job was as Executive Director at Second Harvest North Florida in Jacksonville, where he worked for two years.

In 2012, Mantz became Executive Director of Feeding Tampa Bay, and he has led

the organization since, as President and CEO. Feeding Tampa Bay runs mobile food pantries and Mega Pantries (including one at DeSoto Square Mall in Bradenton, held at 3:30 on Tuesdays). The organization served more than 65 million free meals last year.

Mantz said he was drawn to Feeding Tampa Bay partly because of its broad scope and size – it serves 10 counties in west Florida, including Manatee County.

That means that if there’s an excess of food in one county, it can be given to another county in need.

He was also drawn to the organization because of its mission, which is two-fold: to give people food and to make them aware of other sources of help.

“When someone comes in for a meal, we say, ‘Here. Here you go,’” Mantz said. “But philosophically, it’s just as important to us to get someone out of a food line as it is to feed them.

Also, part of its mission? Feeding Tampa Bay provides rewarding volunteer opportunities.

“Volunteering connects you to your better self,” Mantz said.

Feeding Manatee According to Mantz, people use food banks more than any other type of charity.

That puts Feeding Tampa Bay in a unique position to introduce the people it feeds to many other community partners that could help with other matters, such as health care, housing, financial planning, legal help, or early learning. In Manatee County, Mantz is working to build a network of such partnerships.

“Most of the people that qualify for benefits don’t know they qualify,” Mantz said. “It is an urban myth that there are a group of people out there figuring out a way to live off of free government benefit programs.”

Also, beginning in 2021, Feeding Tampa Bay will start branding locally, meaning that here, it will be known as Feeding Manatee. The organization has served the county for more than 30 years, but the name change is the next step in the

organization’s evolution, Mantz said.

“We really feel like planting our flag a bit higher will help us bring more resources and awareness to the county,” he said.

While Mantz loves his job (he said he always tells his team, “We don’t have to do this, we get to do this”) and loves working with like-minded and caring colleagues, donors, volunteers, and partner charities, it doesn’t mean the job isn’t challenging, and at times, heart-wrenching.

“You’re always aware of how far you are from where you want or need to be,” Mantz said. “If you’ve ever served food in a food line, your greatest fear realized is not having enough for the last people in line. It’s the worst feeling in the world.

It’s a feeling that makes you want to just curl up and die. All of us are driven by that feeling, whether literally in the moment or metaphorically. I do not want to leave that last person standing there without help or hope.”

First-timers in Food Lines S i n c e C OV I D -19 h i t a n d p e o p l e started losing income, their need for food increased alarmingly. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Feeding Tampa Bay estimated there were 45,000 food insecure people in Manatee County. Food insecurity means lacking reliable access to enough nutritious food and feeling anxious about it. By May, that number had reached 62,000.

Currently, in Manatee County, Feeding Tampa Bay has doubled the customers they had prior to the pandemic.

“It’s stabilized a bit now, but early on in the COVID crisis, we saw some 70 percent of the people that were getting food from us had not been in a food line before,” Mantz said. “One of our challenges was making sure they knew where the heck to go. They didn’t even know how it worked.”

Mantz stressed that while Feeding Tampa Bay is not a political organization, politics seriously impact its work.

“When there’s not another stimulus bill, or Cares Act passed, that affects those we serve,” Mantz said. “When they expire or are not renewed or funded, it places people in greater peril. Every day families are pushed further into the economic hole.”

For example, government acts protecting people from being evicted or aid to help people pay rent can help keep families stable. Without this help, they will need more food. The longer a person struggles, the longer it will take them to climb out of the hole.

“Food insecurity already disproportionately affects the working population,” he said, noting that COVID-19 has made the situation more dire.

If those with means can help by donating time or money to Feeding Tampa Bay, it will go a long way toward alleviating the problem. The organization’s costs – such as food, trucks, and personnel -- have doubled since COVID-19. Volunteers are always needed, and it’s safe to volunteer – everyone is gloved and masked, and the pantries are drive-through.

Opportunities include packing and sorting non-perishable goods in the warehouse, serving meals, and distributing groceries.

“I think it’s the humanitarian thing to do, but I think it’s also the smart thing to do,” Mantz said. “We would suggest that you really measure the health of a community by those on the bottom, not those on the top.”

he holidays are insanely busy, and they're just around the corner. What can we predict about the holidays in this crazy 2020 adventure? Not much, but one thing is certain. Cell phone usage has skyrocketed with about 30 percent more users, according to prnewswire.com.

And over the stressful holidays? Cell phone use is only sure to go up! This could be the perfect storm for literally missing the holidays altogether, and none of us want those "too busy, need to make money, can't make time for family" Scrooge vibes, right?

No way! I know that as a fellow parent, as much as you need to balance work into the equation, you realize that being present is

the best present anyone in the family and community can get this year from you!

So, what can you do to be present versus simply mindlessly watching a lot of Tik Toks and aesthetic IG feeds? Although we don't have the opportunity for the classic Norman Rockwell snowfall scene here in Florida, I often tell my relatives from out of state that we more than make up for it in holiday cheer! Whoville, step aside, Manatee County is on top of it!

So even if it has to look a little different this year, in terms of perhaps less crowded scenes and skipping the Santa lap sits, you can show the world with a few shifts in creativity and ideas for family this holiday!

Here are twelve ways you can maximize both fun and phone-free time this holiday!

1. Studies show us when the phone is in the same room; we don't perform as highly. Do your work on a laptop mainly, so it's more focused and efficient versus scattered and endless.

Tip: Leave the cell phone in another room during dinner and family time.

2. Go on YouTube and find karaoke holiday songs. Let each family member choose to pick a song. Tip: Check out The Christmas Karaoke - 90 minutes with the Best Christmas Songs for school-aged kids.

3. String popcorn garland. Use a plastic needle for kids and a regular needle and thread for the older ones! Tip: Spray it with some essential oils to keep ants off!

4. Do an entire day of baking. It keeps your sticky hands busy, and if you share it, you can justify a little each day!! Tip: Attach 2 cookies to your teachers for their gift!

5. Take a day to wrap presents while listening to an audiobook or watching your favorite Christmas movies together. Tip: Prancer is such a good movie for school-aged kids!

6. Watch cooking shows to add variety or plan an old-fashioned dinner as they had in a Christmas Carol with plum pudding!

Ask family members to each make one dish. Tip: Littles can make placemats.

7. If you're still slipping into the holiday phone trance, set an alarm on your phone and ask family for accountability. Say this aloud to yourself, "My family and I deserve my presence. I can face my own life and find ways to get through the problems." Tip: Challenge yourself to do this at least 1 hour a day.

8. Make a mini photo booth! Not going to see Santa this year doesn't have to make the year boring! Get poster boards for both a backdrop and props, and don't forget masks also for a fun addition to an unforgettable year! Don't want to get all Pinterest-y? Use popsicle sticks and paper. Cut out mittens, Santa beards, and glasses! Tip: Get the pets in on it!

9. Take time each day for family fitness. Go on a family walk phoneless. Tip: Have the person who struggles least with technology bring the phone, and everyone else doesn't.

10. If you must use the phone because you're always on call for work or you're just anxious without it, use it as a family. Play a trivia game or read Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which can be spread out over a few nights. Most of the best classics are free online at www.gutenberg.org! Tip: Twas the Night Before Christmas is another fun story, and you can personalize it and do the voices!

11. Listen to an O. Henry story such as The Gift of the Magi or Stuffy Pete, as O. Henry was known to be one of the greatest American storytellers. His timeless stories are riveting for children and adults alike. Tip: Don't like to read aloud? Listen on YouTube.

12. Going to a religious service is a rare treat this year, so if you don't make sure you make an appointment to go and to worship, check-in online to a church or service you've always wanted to attend or serve as a family! Tip: Outdoor light displays abound. Take a ride in the car while listening to carols. Tip: Adding in cups of Starbucks or your own cocoa is an entire "mood," as the kids say, and an excellent way to get you sipping in sweetness and honed in on what is most important together this year - your love for one another!

T

he requests rolled in rapid-fire, pinging Carl Reynolds’ inbox like unexpected raindrops on a tin roof with tearful, heart-grabbing messages.

The words laced together despairing narratives: A single mom juggling four kids – one with special needs – all sharing a cell phone for online school.

A dad furloughed with no means to buy a computer for his third grader to tap into classes. A stream of parents desperately trying to persevere and pivot as COVID-19 cast a wicked spell, shuttering schools in one swoop and forcing children to learn behind computer screens instead of in the classrooms.

Scattered across Manatee County, many families just struggling to pay electric bills and grocery tabs during an eerie and unimaginable shut down had no room in a siphoned budget to buy computers for their now virtual students.

While managing a bustling law firm with offices stretching from Orlando to Port Charlotte and raising a family, Reynolds devotes a generous amount of energy to lift up his community. Pace Center for Girls, The Food Bank of Manatee, Little League sports teams, and SNN’s Helping Hand shine as a fraction of the organizations Reynolds supports.

and we are fortunate enough to have two computers and iPads for them to share,” said Reynolds. “How are families in need who maybe have one computer or just a cell phone doing this? I wanted to try and provide computers to children in need. No strings attached – just a fair opportunity for all children to attend school online and seek the education they deserve.”

It didn’t take him long to figure out what to do next.

Like excited kids racing through a scavenger hunt, Reynolds, alongside his staff, turned over every rock to secure a palette of laptops – a hot commodity when the world turned remote. Tucked in a New Jersey warehouse, Reynolds finally scored, and 300 laptops were headed to Florida. In the end, the law firm gifted 500 computers to area children whose parents applied through Reynolds’ website.

Inspiring tales of neighbors helping their elderly friend’s grocery shop, businesses creating homemade sanitizers, and stores modifying their hours to shield the community during the pandemic’s wrath moved Reynolds to hatch an idea.

“I thought, I have four children – all schoolage – also trying to navigate online school,

Particularly compelled to support children, Reynolds’ laptop distribution touched hundreds of Manatee and Sarasota county students who could keep their new laptops.

“I deal with accident victims a lot,” said Reynolds. “While it is usually the parents who are hurt, it is the kids who suffer. Mom or dad is hurt, and they lose a job. I have a special place in my heart to help kids.”

While the laptop giveaway filled a pandemic need, Reynolds has historically gravitated toward grassroots advertising to both grow his business organically and support his community. Whether it’s his firm’s name stamped across the T-shirts of lacrosse players or his annual food, drive Christmas party, Reynolds alongside his wife, Mariah – a fourthgeneration Bradentonian – strive to reinvest in their community.

“This is home,” said Reynolds with conviction in his voice. “This is where we are raising our children. We want them to have an even better community, an even better future.”

“I put out a message on social media on a Friday and planned to do a commercial,” said Reynolds, an Orlando native who you may catch dribbling on a basketball court or coaching on the sports fields. “Well, by Sunday, all the laptops were spoken for. I didn’t even get to the commercial.”

Anxiously waiting in the law firm’s laptop pick up car line, Wyatt Harbour bounced with sheer excitement to get his hands on his very own computer. The 9-yearold science lover with a talent for rattling off dinosaur names and a soft spot for Captain Underpants books, squeezed in school wedged between his mom, Kelly Harbour’s, work ZOOM meetings on the same computer.

As a single mom, Harbour rose before daybreak at 5 a.m. each morning to conquer a solid two hours of work before

Wyatt woke up for school. Pushing through the challenges of ADHD, Wyatt relies on extra support in his education journey.

“It was incredibly hard-working on one computer,” said Harbour. “Because Wyatt is special needs, I can’t just give him a list of what to do. He needed frequent breaks.

I was very frazzled and stressed. The new laptop made everything easier for both of us, and it made him more excited and invested in his work. Kids like Wyatt are at risk for falling behind, but having his own laptop made him really excel.”

Harbour expressed gratitude for the law firm’s generosity and compassion.

“They recognized a need and stepped up without being asked,” said Harbour.

“That’s immeasurable. As a single parent without any family here to help, I’m so grateful for the resources they made

“People can come and donate one can or a whole case,” said Reynolds. “We’ll have 350 to 500 people come, and each one can participate in some way.”

Stretching out past the holiday season, Reynolds also commits each month to donate $1,000 to someone in need through SNN’s Helping Hand news segment. Reynolds relishes the chance to surprise recipients with an extra boost of cash from residents battling terminal illnesses, trying to spread awareness to parents struggling to make ends meet.

When Covid hit, it cleared her income, and she struggled to provide support services for her daughter as schools closed. Reynolds not only surprised her with $1,000, but he also presented her with a laptop.

A collection of handwritten thank-you notes and colorful, happy pictures of kids with their laptops cover a table at the law firm. The sweet messages, scrawled in pencil and adorned with hearts, reveal the impact Reynolds has composed.

Some messages boast photographs of

the children clutching their laptops with giant grins and a grip that hints they may never set their prized position down again.

“It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done,” Reynolds said. “It’s a feeling I can’t describe.”

“For someone to see me, even without the money or computer, to see something outside of themselves, is comforting to my heart,” said Marie, with emotion rattling in her voice.

As if sharing a deep-rooted epiphany, Reynolds paused for a moment in his office and expressed how critical it is to show his children the importance of giving back. Reynolds, the oldest of six siblings, dug out a cherished holiday family memory as if it was perfectly preserved in a snow globe. With a father who worked in real estate at the time, Reynolds’ family rode a seesaw of highs and lows financially.

One Christmas, his family, was riding high, and as teenagers, they all knew it.

Smiles stretched ear-to-ear when his dad told the clan to hop in their Tropic Traveler van to head to the mall. Their reward: Pick anything you want in a store. Reynolds snatched up a coveted Walk-Man. “When we got home, my dad told us to wrap the gifts we chose,” said Reynolds, who years later inspired his father to achieve a law degree at 62-years-old.

“We were confused until he revealed he knew a couple of families in need with kids our ages. He told us we were giving our gifts to them, and we weren’t happy.”

Then the magic happened. Sparkling lights glowed Christmas Eve as Reynolds joined his father’s hand, delivering the gifts on front porches – ringing doorbells and slipping away unseen.

“It was my favorite Christmas, and it stuck with me,” said Reynolds as tears collected in his eyes. “In the weeks that followed, we ran into some of these families, and we could see their joy. This really impacted me.”

hen you work from home, it's almost impossible to keep your career and family life from bleeding into one another.

Separating work and life is important for everyone, but it's a topic that deserves even more attention for parents who work remotely. If your kids are in school, you might also be dealing with the added stress of managing your children's remote learning on top of everything else. It's a lot for anyone to handle, but the tips below may help provide the guidance you've been looking for.

Know You're Not Alone With the COVID-19 pandemic going on, many parents have found themselves in the same situation. If you feel overwhelmed, it's important to remember that other parents in your community probably feel the same way you do. Reading the NEXTGEN Magazine is a great way to learn about what's going on in your community while also feeling connected to other parents in similar situations.

Fortunately, there are also role models to look up to. Many parents homeschool their children on top of having a job and have been

doing it successfully well before the pandemic started.

Homeschooling might be a little different than remote learning, but following informative blogs can guide parents who have been doing it for years.

Get Your Schedule Set Working from home is hard enough on its own, but with classes starting up, you'll need to be even more on top of your family's schedule to get everything done. Having a solid morning routine is a good way to start the day off right. However, the rest of the day will depend on your family's specific needs.

If your children need help with certain school subjects at the same time each day, try moving your work tasks so that you can give them your undivided attention during those times.

Likewise, if you have important things on your to-do list, try to schedule them during times that your children can do schoolwork independently.

Keep in mind that the reality of working from home doesn't always line up with your expectations. Changing your mindset about remote work can help you set more realistic expectations and stop being so hard on yourself when things don't go exactly as planned.

Outsource What You Can As a working parent, you might already feel like you've got too much on your plate without distance learning thrown into the mix.

If you find yourself completely overwhelmed, it might be time to get more comfortable delegating tasks to others on your team.

Depending on what you do for work, you might find it's more beneficial to hire someone to provide admin support on a freelance basis. A virtual administrative assistant can do tasks such as handling emails, fielding phone calls, scheduling appointments, or managing your to-do list. By hiring a freelancer, you get help when you need it, and you don't have to worry about things like employee taxes. Freelancers can be a great asset if you're selfemployed or run your own business.

Devote Time to Self-Care It takes time to find a healthy balance between your own work and your children's schoolwork. However, it's important not to let your personal needs take the backseat as you're juggling all these responsibilities. When you don't devote time to your mental and physical health, it's hard to put your best self forward at work and as a parent.

As you're figuring out what schedules work best for you and your children, be sure to block in some alone time just for yourself.

Susan Cain notes that having a few minutes of uninterrupted "me time" is important no matter your personality type, but it's even more crucial if you're an introvert.

Finding the perfect balance between work, school, and family life will take a lot of trial and error, but don't give up. Carving out time for self-care, sticking to a schedule, and outsourcing tasks you can't do alone are just a few methods for managing everything you've got on your plate right now.

Handwashing: Keeping Your Family Healthy Handwashing is an easy, cheap, and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep kids and adults healthy. When your family is healthy, you don’t have to worry about missing school, work, or other activities.

Help your child develop handwashing skills Parents and caretakers play an important role in teaching children to wash their hands. Handwashing can become a lifelong healthy habit if you start teaching it at an early age. Teach kids the five easy steps for handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry—and the key times to wash hands, such as after using the bathroom or before eating. You can find ways to make it fun, like making up your own handwashing song or turning it into a game.

Lead by example Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults in their lives. When you make handwashing part of your routine, you’re setting an example for your children to follow.

Give frequent reminders Building handwashing skills takes time.

At first, your child will need regular reminders of how and when to wash hands. It is especially important to remind children to wash their hands after using the bathroom, before eating, after touching pets, after playing outside, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose. But once handwashing becomes a habit and a regular part of your child’s day, they will practice it throughout their lives.

What if soap and water aren’t available?

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol.

Did you know?

Baby wipes may make your hands look clean, but they’re not designed to remove germs from your hands. CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water when possible.

Using the right car seat, booster seat, or seat belt for every ride can save your child's life. Preventing the spread of COVID-19 during travel is also an important part of safe transportation.

How to clean car seats and seat belts

What to expect from schools, child care, and others who transport your child

It may be tempting to clean and disinfect your child's car seat the same way you do doorknobs, countertops, and even your steering wheel--with a disinfecting wipe, for example, or a spray of diluted bleach and water. For most surfaces, that's fine. Car seats and seat belts are different, though. Using a disinfecting chemical on them can damage the belts leading the car seat or seat belt to fail in the event of a crash.

As schools, Head Start, child care, and other programs reopen, many children will ride in a vehicle that transports a lot of kids, like a school bus, child care van, or other larger vehicle. Programs should have written policies explaining how they will prevent infection during transportation. They should also have plans for how they will make the vehicle safe if a passenger test positive or is exposed to COVID-19. Here are some things to look for:

How to make a car seat or vehicle safe after exposure to COVID-19

• Programs should make a detailed seating plan so that the same child always uses the same seat, car seat, or harness device, and no other child uses it.

• Buses should load from back to front and unload from front to back.

• If a child tests positive or shows signs of the virus, the seating position, car seat, seat belt, or harness should be removed or taken out of service for a few days. After that, it can be cleaned and used again.

If your child or other person tests positive or has been exposed to COVID-19 and was in the car, take the following steps: • Clean and disinfect the spot where that person rode, including the seats, door handles, window, and lock buttons, steering wheel, gearshift, and other hard surfaces within six feet of where they were.

• Remove the car seats and place them out of reach or in a tightly sealed plastic bag for a few days. Wear gloves, a mask, and eye protection while handling the car seats, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. After a few days, you can use the car seats safely again. If your child must ride in the car during this time, you will need to use another car seat that fits your child and your car.

• Remember: seat belts cannot be disinfected. If you have another vehicle, it would be a good idea to use that vehicle instead of the one that has been exposed to COVID-19. Or do not use that seating position for a few days. Weather permitting, parking in the sun, and airing out the vehicle with the windows open may help get rid of the virus more quickly.

After a few days, you can clean the seat belt with mild soap and water and use it again.

• To further prevent the spread of COVID-19 in your vehicle, try limiting passengers to who live in your home, not anyone

How to stay safe on public transportation Public transportation often includes many passengers in small areas, which can increase the risk of COVID-19 spreading. It may be safer to walk or use a private vehicle while COVID-19 is spreading. When you ride a train or bus, practice physical distancing as much as possible, wear cloth face coverings, and frequently use hand sanitizer. When you arrive home, wash your hands thoroughly and consider changing into clean clothes.

What if my child has special needs?

For children with special health needs, transportation plans must address both crash protection and prevention of infection. If your child has an IEP, the school is responsible for providing safe transportation.

• If your child has a weakened immune system, talk with your pediatrician about the risks and benefits of going to school or other activities in person. Some kids may be safest with online learning until rates of COVID-19 infection are under control in their communities.

• For a child with a tracheostomy tube, use extra caution during transportation to lower the chance of spreading respiratory droplets, which can carry the virus. Caregivers should wear protective equipment and perform suctioning and other procedures in larger spaces outside the vehicle whenever possible.

• Children who use a wheelchair and transfer to another seat, like on a school bus, could be at risk from close contact with caregivers. It may be safer to use a transit wheelchair that can be anchored to the vehicle.

Remember This guidance is only one part of keeping children safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether at home or on the go, it's important to keep a physical distance of at least 6 feet whenever possible, wear cloth face coverings, and wash hands frequently.

R

esponding to disasters is both rewarding and challenging work. Sources of stress for emergency responders may include witnessing human suffering, risk of personal harm, intense workloads, life-and-death decisions, and separation from family. Stress prevention and management are critical for responders to stay well and to continue to help in the situation.

There are important steps responders should take before, during, and after an event. To take care of others, responders must be feeling well and thinking clearly.

Here are some important steps responders can take to ensure they are able to do their job and cope with challenging situations:

Preparing for a Response: • Try to learn as much as possible about what your role would be in a response.

• If you will be traveling or working long hours during a response, explain this to loved ones who may want to contact

you. Come up with ways you may be able to communicate with them. Keep their expectations realistic, and take the pressure off yourself.

• Talk to your supervisor and establish a plan for who will fill any urgent ongoing work duties unrelated to the disaster while you are engaged in the response.

During a Response: Understand and Identify Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress

situations and recognize accomplishments, even small ones.

• Offer to help with basic needs, such as sharing supplies and transportation.

• Monitor each other’s workloads. Encourage each other to take breaks. Share opportunities for stress relief (rest, routine sleep, exercise, and deep breathing).

• Communicate your buddy’s basic needs and limits to leadership – make your buddy feel “safe” to speak up.

Limit your time working alone by trying to work in teams.

Responders experience stress during a crisis. When stress builds up, it can cause: • Burnout – feelings of extreme exhaustion and being overwhelmed.

• Secondary traumatic stress – stress reactions and symptoms resulting from exposure to another individual’s traumatic experiences, rather than from exposure directly to a traumatic event.

Coping techniques, like taking breaks, eating healthy foods, exercising, and using the buddy system, can help prevent and reduce burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Recognize the signs of both of these conditions in yourself and other responders to be sure those who need a break or need help can address these needs.

Signs Of Burnout: • • • • • • • •

Sadness, depression, or apathy Easily frustrated Blaming of others, irritability Lacking feelings, indifferent Isolation or disconnection from others Poor self-care (hygiene) Tired, exhausted, or overwhelmed Feeling like: • A failure • Nothing you can do will help • You are not doing your job well • You need alcohol/other drugs to cope

Signs of Secondary Traumatic Stress: • • • • •

Excessively worry or fear about something bad happening Easily startled, or “on guard” all of the time Physical signs of stress (e.g., racing heart) Nightmares or recurrent thoughts about the traumatic situation The feeling that others’ trauma is yours

Get support from team members: Develop a Buddy System In a buddy system, two responders partner together to support each other and monitor each other’s stress, workload, and safety.

• Get to know each other. Talk about background, interests, hobbies, and family. Identify each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

• Keep an eye on each other. Try to work in the same location if you can.

• Set up times to check-in with each other. Listen carefully and share experiences and feelings. Acknowledge tough

Responder Self-Care Techniques: • • • • • • • •

Limit working hours to no longer than 12-hour shifts.

Work in teams and limit the amount of time working alone.

Write in a journal.

Talk to family, friends, supervisors, and teammates about your feelings and experiences.

Practice breathing and relaxation techniques.

Know that it is okay to draw boundaries and say “no.”

Avoid or limit caffeine and use of alcohol.

It is important to remind yourself: • It is not selfish to take breaks.

• The needs of survivors are not more important than your own needs and well-being.

• Working all of the time does not mean you will make your best contribution.

• There are other people who can help in the response.

Responding to disasters can be both rewarding and stressful.

Knowing that you have stress and coping with it as you respond will help you stay well, and this will allow you to keep helping those who are affected.

• Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an illness caused by a virus that can spread from person to person.

• The virus that causes COVID-19 is a new coronavirus that has spread throughout the world.

• COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild (or no symptoms) to severe illness.

• Buy groceries and medicine, go to the doctor, and complete banking activities online when possible.

• If you must go in person, stay at least 6 feet away from others and disinfect items you must touch.

• Get deliveries and takeout, and limit in-person contact as much as possible.

Know how COVID-19 is spread • You can become infected by coming into close contact (about 6 feet or two arm lengths) with a person who has COVID-19. COVID-19 is primarily spread from person to person.

• You can become infected from respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

• You may also be able to get it by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, and then by touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

Protect yourself and others from COVID-19 • There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.

• Stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact with others.

• Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth in public settings.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Practice social distancing

Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick • Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.

• Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.

• Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home.

• There is no specific treatment for COVID-19, but you can seek medical care to help relieve your symptoms.

• If you need medical attention, call ahead.

Know your risk for severe illness • Everyone is at risk of getting COVID-19.

• Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more severe illness.

Helping Your Child During the Pandemic With the increasing prevalence of Coronavirus, you might be feeling challenged by the change in your routines, the need for social distancing, or the fear and anxiety around the virus and its effects on your family. Your child might also be feeling this way in response to changes in your mood, changes in the daily routine, or changes in your environment. The following tips offer some guidance for supporting your children at this time.

Remain calm and reassure children • “The leaders in our community have made a plan for us to stay safe. I am going to help you be safe.”

• “We cannot go to grandma’s house right now, but we can Face Time her. She loves you so much, and that would make her so happy!”

Provide positive attention • If nobody in the household is showing symptoms of illness, use hugs and high fives OR be creative and use “elbow fives” or “feet fives.”

• Use positive facial expressions such as smiles or funny faces.

• Use descriptive praise: “You cleaned up breakfast all by yourself” or “Your brother looked so happy when you read the book to him.”

Teach safety habits • “We are going to wash our hands for 20 seconds. This will get the germs that could make us sick off of our hands. What song do you want to sing?”

• Show your child how to cover their cough.

Be available by • Being responsive to your child’s needs: “I see your body has some extra energy today. Do you want to go for a walk or have a dance party?”

• Listening to your child and talking about their feelings: “I know you feel disappointed that you can’t go to school to see your friends.”

• Answering questions: “She is wearing a mask because she is sick and she is keeping us safe by covering her mouth.”

Plan your day • Communicate the daily schedule using words and visuals about when work time, play time, and family time will happen.

• Involve your child in planning the day: “Do you want to play with blocks or watch a show while I work?” “Do you want to take a walk before or after my phone call?’

• Maintain consistent routines related to sleeping, eating, and physical activity.

• Plan fun family activities for your child to look forward to such as watching a video, going on a scavenger hunt, calling a friend or family member, or family games.

• Create an activity bin of things your child can do safely on their own. Have your child help you choose things to put in the bin.

• Most of all, make a plan but be flexible and prepared that things might happen that disrupt your plans.

Almost 5000 Manatee County families have received food packages at 30 From Cradle To College Foundation (FCTCF) distribution events in the last three months.

FCTCF received a grant of almost $315,000 from the Manatee County CARES Act funding to purchase a brand-new school bus that was converted into a mobile food distribution vehicle.

The new vehicle – in partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay, who supplied the food - traveled to remote and underserved areas in Manatee County to serve the local community, along with the existing fleet of three vehicles owned by the Manatee County Early Learning Coalition to expedite the food distribution in the on-going fight against COVID-19.

ELC INSTALL S HAND SANITIZING STATIONS TO HELP KIDS GET BACK OUTDOORS!

T

he Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, Inc (ELC) installed 206 outdoor weather-proof hand sanitizing stations at Elementary schools and childcare centers around Manatee County last month as part of the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ELC was awarded a grant of $150,803 through the Manatee County CARES Act after applying for funding to help assist with the safe return of children to playgrounds. Schools and childcare centers will also be provided with hand sanitizing gel for the stations.

The timing could not have been better after the School District announced in October that it would safely reopen playground equipment for Pre-K thru 5th-grade students at schools.

Paul Sharff, ELC Chief Executive Officer, said: "It was so important for our children in childcare centers, VPK students, and all elementary-aged children, to be back safely back outside on playgrounds after months of uncertainty and change due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Again, we would like to thank the Manatee County administration for awarding this grant to allow so many local children to play again and have fun safely outdoors. " Genelle Yost, School District Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services, said she was happy that playgrounds have safely reopened for Manatee County's young learners. "Recess is an important part of the school day for an elementary-aged student, so we are excited that they will have expanded opportunities to play and exercise."

W

hen asked what she likes about Golf, Phoenix Scanlan said: “I love the winning part.”

This simple statement demonstrates two important things about Phoenix. For one, she has a great deal of confidence – something that’s absolutely necessary to succeed in golf. Also, she wins—a lot.

“It’s basically like a mystery,” Phoenix said, explaining that no two rounds of golf are ever the same. Each time she picks up a club, although she tries to control her shots, anything can happen. “I kind of like that,” she said.

Phoenix picked up golf at age six when a family friend gave her a set of clubs for her birthday. She hit around in her backyard and liked it. At age nine, she started lessons at the Jon Bullas Golf Academy in Sarasota. She also took weekly lessons through First Tee – Sarasota/ Manatee, from ages eight to 10.

Today, Phoenix, 12, is one of the best golfers her age in Manatee County and beyond. John Hulbert, a former professional golfer, currently coaches Phoenix at Missing Link Golf Academy, which he founded in 2000 in Lakewood Ranch.

Hulbert said that Phoenix is talented, obviously loves golf, and has high expectations for herself.

“At nine or 10, you could tell she really had the drive,” Hulbert said. “She’s very focused for her age.”

According to Hulbert, Golf is such a mental game that it can be difficult for anyone, especially kids, to keep their cool. “I would say it’s the top mental game,” he said. “It’s just you and the course and your emotions. It’s probably the toughest of any sport for kids, mentally, for sure.”

Luckily for Phoenix, she might be dying to win on the inside, but it doesn’t show outwardly, Hulbert said.

“If she gets emotional, she knows how to refocus, get back on track and not come unhinged,” he said. “She’s very mature like that.”

Mental Toughness At a Manatee Junior Tour tournament on a recent Sunday at the Longboat Key Golf Club, Phoenix was calm, consistent, and composed, never rattled. If she was disappointed in a shot, angry or nervous, she hid it well. She played against three other girls around her age, and all were respectful of each other. She displayed more sportsmanship than many adults.

Phoenix is small but strong and athletic -- the type of kid who’d likely be good at any sport she tries. She likes playing soccer, football, and tennis, and, from age six to 10, she practiced Tae Kwon Do. After earning her black belt, she switched her focus solely to golf.

She credits Tae Kwon Do with helping to strengthen her body for golf, particularly her arms, but as she says, “You’ve gotta have a technique to hit it far.” In her case, according to her coach, she can drive the ball upwards of 200 yards.

Phoenix is confident but never arrogant. She works on being relaxed enough to have fun and aims to let bad shots roll off her back, the way she said her favorite player, Ricky Fowler, does.

Phoenix emulates Fowler because he “lets it go,” she said. She likes him so much that she only uses the golf balls that Fowler developed with TaylorMade, called TP5 Pix. At the recent tournament, she wore a stylish camo PUMA shirt and hat – the same brand Fowler often wears.

The last two summers, Phoenix attended the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation World Championship at the world-famous Pinehurst Golf Club in North Carolina. In the girl’s age 11 group, Phoenix placed 40th out of 89. It was a result she wasn’t happy with, even though she scored 36 in the first nine holes – a personal best.

Also, to get to the world championship is a huge accomplishment – Phoenix had to play in local tournaments and win the tour championship to qualify. Now, she gets invitations to play all over the country and was recently invited to play in Hawaii.

Phoenix also has competed in Drive, Chip, and Putt -- a free nationwide junior golf development competition. It was canceled this year due to COVID-19. But in summer 2019, Phoenix, then 10, won all three disciplines (driving, chipping, and putting) at Sarasota’s Bobby Jones Golf Club at the local qualifier. And she won the subregional qualifier at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando.

The regional qualifier was held that September at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach. The best golfers from the entire east coast of the U.S. competed, and Phoenix came in eighth place.

Unfortunately, only the winner goes on to the National Finals, conducted at Augusta National Golf Club, and broadcast on the Golf Channel. Again, making it to the regional qualifier was a huge accomplishment for Phoenix, in and of itself.

Phoenix also golfs for her middle school, Sarasota Military Academy. As a sixth-grader, Phoenix is the top-ranked of the six-member team (composed of four boys and two girls, including Phoenix). Every team member except for Phoenix is in the seventh 57

grade. In her twice-weekly matches against other schools, she often plays against eighth-grade kids twice her size. And she still often comes in first.

“I love competition,” Phoenix said. “I don’t mind if I lose. I just kind of love having someone who’s better than me and trying to beat them.”

A Girl with Goals During her school season (this year, from the start of school through late October), Phoenix plays four days a week – usually two matches and two practices. In the off-season, she takes lessons with Hulbert on Tuesdays and Saturdays for three hours each (more often in summer).

She sometimes plays in tournaments on Sundays. But she does that less frequently these days, usually only once a month. After With Jim her playing partner and caddy.

racking up 70 ribbons, her parents decided her time would be better spent improving her game by taking lessons from Hulbert.

When she has free time, golf is what Phoenix chooses. Since she is lucky enough to live on a golf course and has her own cart, she can step outside and play two or three holes almost any day. When Phoenix golfs for fun, like on Sundays when she doesn’t have a tournament, she’ll play 18 holes with Jim Conahan, a personal trainer and family friend who is also Phoenix’s caddie when she plays in tournaments.

As a caddie, Jim not only helps Phoenix with technical decisions like which club to use. He helps her deal mentally with a bad shot or a bad day. “I try to keep her calm, keep her laughing and keep it light,” Conahan said.

“Golf is hard and includes letdowns,” Conahan said. “It’s how a player responds to those letdowns that’s important.” He said “Phoenix is competitive but can rebound.”

Conahan describes Phoenix as mature, outgoing, and poised.

“She has focus, drive, and determination,” he said. “There is no doubt in my mind she’ll succeed at any goals she sets.”

And Phoenix has goals – very clear ones. In the short-term, they include playing under par: under 36 on nine holes and under 72 on 18 holes. She would like to do this by mid-2021. She would like to play golf in high school and then in college, specifically for Duke University, which ties with two other colleges for the best collegiate women’s NCAA Division 1 golf program in the country.

Long-term, she wants to play for the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

To reach her goals, Phoenix practices as often as she can. She has two 15- by nine-foot putting greens in her home – one on the lanai and one in her bedroom. Her father, Dave Scanlan, said she’d usually hit a few balls right before bed.

Also, Phoenix views YouTube golf instructional videos and watches Golf on TV. “She’d always rather be out and playing,” Scanlan said. “But yeah, she’ll watch if it’s rainy.”

Couch Caddies Phoenix is lucky to have parents, Dave and Rachael, who aren’t overbearing or critical – just supportive and easy-going.

They both attend all Phoenix’s tournaments, and Dave Scanlan accompanies his daughter every time she plays.

“I’m an older father, and she’s 12,” said Scanlan, 58. “Golf is where we found common ground. She started playing, and I started watching.”

Neither parent plays golf, and neither has an interest in learning.

Scanlan said they would rather watch and support Phoenix, and in that way, share the sport she loves. He likes spending time with her, being outside, and enjoying the scenery at beautiful courses.

Also, he has come to love watching Golf on TV, and he researches techniques and gear constantly, sharing what he finds with Phoenix.

“She calls me her ‘couch caddie’ because I read everything about golf,” Scanlan said. “But unfortunately, I can’t read the putting green, which is why I don’t caddie her when she’s playing.

“Besides, I get way more enjoyment out of watching Phoenix than I would playing,” he said. “It looks like a pretty tough game to me, and you know what they say about old dogs and new tricks.”

A WILD THING… The amazing story of Dr. Charles Tomeo and his 35-year commitment to local kids WORDS: Bre Jones Mulock PICTURES: Whitney Patton

T

o the heart-tugging rhythm of his mother sobbing, Dr. Charles Tomeo – stoic and stone-faced – listened to searing words drop in painful slow motion from the frowning mouth of his high school senior guidance counselor.

Tucked in a tiny office inside the school, the counselor’s opinion slammed down as final as a guillotine: You will never amount to anything in life.

The harsh words echoed and singed.

Then the wayward student with dipping grades and low SAT scores accepted the challenge. He crushed it.

Tomeo not only graduated from dental school at the top of his class, but he also fought as a captain in the Vietnam War. He forged a career as a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon, raised seven kids, and inspired generations of children through founding 35 years ago the Manatee Wildcats – a football, cheerleading, and lacrosse organization. And as if that isn’t enough, the Wildcats, which now fall under the Pop Warner Little Scholars and the Foundation for Youth Development, have never succumbed to a losing season. Ever.

As if sharing the secret back roads to a life map, Tomeo carved out a way to give back and created in 1983 the Wildcats, which teaches much more than punts and passes on the ball field. More than three decades later, Saturday mornings at G.T. Bray still buzz with camaraderie, commitment, and success for thousands of kids who sport the red, white, and blue uniform and need passing school report cards to play.

“I was lucky,” said Tomeo, who shared 25 - 3 0 percent of Wildcats rely on scholarships to play. “I knew sports, and

I knew this is how I wanted to give back.

Some have no father figure, and they come to practice looking for guidance from a coach to help them work through the chaos in their neighborhoods - the chaos in their families. I use sports as a vehicle to achieve academic success.

With dew still glistening on manicured blades of grass, streams of kids hoping for a win fill the ball fields at G.T. Bray Park each Saturday. Dedicated parents haul lawn chairs, and coolers trail behind as the volunteer coaches strategize.

Historically a 100 percent volunteer program, the Wildcats never receive government money or grants.

Armed with a $10,000 loan, a handful of donations, and sheer determination,

“My grades weren’t good, but that counselor didn’t know me,” said Tomeo, whose office boasts shimmering gold sports trophies, smiling pictures of his family, and Vietnam War memorial statues. “My parents didn’t make it past the eighth grade, and I had no one to lean on to support me through school. But what I did know was that I could play ball.”

Tomeo smiles, and his eyes crinkle as he points out proud moments and kids who have touched his heart. Wide, toothy grins, and freckled cheeks stare back f ro m t he faded photographs. Many of these kids now lead and shape their communities as doctors, lawyers, financial advisors, and real estate brokers.

Tomeo created the program with four initial teams during a time when Manatee County had only one failing youth tackle football option. To this day, the Wildcats have never turned away a player who could not afford to join.

“Year after year, thousands of children have participated in the Wildcats football, cheerleading, and newly added lacrosse program,” said Nick Pagnotta, Tomeo’s stepson and the league’s current president.

“The faces change, but the goal remains the same. Once you’ve taken part in being involved in the Manatee Wildcats village, you are always family.”

Pagnotta emphasized the values the program has always radiated: to be selfless and passionate.

“It was and is still important to Dr. Tomeo that each volunteer understands we are building our youth to be the future generations that become leaders of Bradenton and Manatee County.”

Coach was good to our crew, but he made us work. Those were some of the best times I ever had on the field. I played for the next ten years, but I started as a Wildcat.”

Former Manatee High School football star and college player Blake Keller shared Tomeo instilled in his players more than technique on the field.

“Coach Tomeo was a great influence on my life as a kid,” Keller said. “Looking back, all my teammates and I were lucky having someone as successful as him be our head coach for so many years. He tried to shape us into having a winning mentality and competitive drive on and off the field. He taught us lessons along the way that had nothing to do with football but everything to do with life. And for that reason, I will always appreciate the time and dedication Coach Tomeo put towards my life.”

For many kids growing up across Manatee County, consistent Saturdays on the field bred comfort and structure and a coveted chance to connect with role models and friends.

“I remember Doc always telling the team that these would be the best days of our lives – playing football with friends,” said Auburn Tigers quarterback and former minor league baseball player Cord Sandberg. “He was right. Saturdays playing football for the Wildcats were some of my favorite childhood memories.”

While filling a burning need to reach community kids who lacked support, the idea for a sports program hatched from Tomeo’s desire to see his own children play each week while he juggled a swelling and successful maxillofacial and oral surgery business.

“I knew if I were ever going to see my kids play sports, I would need to be the head coach – the one making the schedules up,” said Tomeo with a chuckle. “I left the office every day to make it to one of their practices or games.”

Searching the bleachers during her softball games, Elena Cassella – Tomeo’s oldest daughter and now executive director for the Foundation for Dreams – could always spot her dad in the crowd encouraging and motivating her. Cassella knew just seeing him out of the corner of her eye boosted courage to keep going when the game proved tough.

“He knew what sports did for him,” said Cassella, who cherishes memories of weekday evenings when she and her dad would hit ball after ball practicing at GT Bray. “There was no way we were not playing sports. He teaches core values to all the players through sports. He’s still out there coaching, still talking to kids and teaching them they have unlimited potential. When they are huddled together on the field, they are learning latch key lessons that resonate so easily with them and are transferable.”

While it is not uncommon for Tomeo to purchase shoes and equipment for players in need or wrap an arm around a kid struggling on the field, he insists the kindness and giving nature is the Wildcats true culture and breeds throughout the entire organization.

“We’re all in it for the right reasons,” said Tomeo, who coaches alongside his son, stepson, and sons-in-law and chooses to include the Wildcats under the Pop Warner umbrella in 1986 in order to provide more competition for his players

and to stress the national organization’s values of God, family, and good grades.

“No one in my organization makes even one penny.”

Beaming during an office visit break, Tomeo proudly points out newspaper clippings and photographs of his seven children who have all excelled in both sports and career journeys. He pauses to hold up a framed picture of him and his son, Charles C. Tomeo – who is also a maxillofacial and oral surgeon. The two men, dressed in blue scrubs, hover sideby-side over a patient while performing surgery together.

“That’s my son and I working on a patient together,” said Tomeo, his face bursting with love and pride. “My family and I have really had a great run.”

That run now transcends into a new generation, as a sprawling family tree of grandkids run, kick, cheer and tackle as proud Wildcats. The very same fields where Tomeo logged countless hours coaching his own children and waves of players for decades now welcome his grandkids like a replay reel churning out new memories. Creating their unique journeys, Tomeo noted there is not a week that rolls by without one of his grandkids chiming in to give him a sports update.

“One of the reasons I’m still doing this – still out there coaching – is for my grandkids,” said Tomeo, who can rattle off every sport they excel in on the fields.

“When they are all out there and playing, it’s a great feeling to watch them.”

From time to time, Tomeo’s thoughts will wander to his school counselor’s harsh words so many years ago. Despite his inarguable success, Tomeo shies away from accolades. However, a handful of years ago, the love for a man who has mentored and poured thousands of his own dollars into the youth of Manatee County swelled on the fields one evening. Past faces of players and coaches lined the field in support and honor of Tomeo during the game, where he decided to pass the torch of league president to Pagnotta.

“I think it was then on that night,” said Tomeo. “That was when I looked out in the crowd and saw all these past players and coaches from different decades who showed up that I thought I guess I had really done something.”

020 was an interesting year, needless to say, but my family still has plenty of enthusiasm for the upcoming holidays, even with all the ups and downs.

Embracing the traditions this year has been vital towards maintaining our kids’ well-being, plus my husband and I have been open to trying new ideas to help limit activities outside of the home.

Speaking of traditions, whether baking cookies, wrapping gifts, or decorating together, it is the special moments like these that bring us all closer and truly get us into the holiday spirit.

The kiddos and I are also making handmade decorations and gifts. Not only is this a great way to start off the season, but it gives them another activity to keep them entertained as well as utilizes both creativity and hand-eye coordination.

One of those art projects that we look forward to creating together is ornaments. Not only can we place them on our tree, but we can also use them to add a little something extra special to family member’s gifts.

Just like always, I am all about utilizing what I already have, so I looked for items that could be upcycled or used differently.

Thinking of the shape of a reindeer and a shiny red nose, I decided to put together a paper plate ornament craft.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: • White Uncoated Paper Plate • Brown Acrylic Paint or a Brown Crayon • Brown Fuzzy Sticks AKA Pipe Cleaners • Red Pom Poms • Large Googly Eyes • Glue • Paint Brush • Hole Punch • Safety Scissors • Ribbon • Black Marker Tip: You can locate most of these items at a local craft store.

DIRECTIONS: To get started with the ornament, first cut the paper plate in half.

Next, take the two halves and fold them into a cone shape and glue the folded pieces together to hold the form.

Tip: Place paper towels or old newspaper down to protect your surfaces and have children wear an apron or oversized t-shirt to protect clothing.

Then begin painting the cone shape. Once the paint dries on both sides, place a hole at the top center with the hole punch.

Next, cut out a piece of ribbon long enough to be tied at the top for hanging the ornament on a tree or gift.

Next up, glue the googly eyes and add one of the red pom poms for the reindeer’s nose. If you want to make a female reindeer, add lashes with the black marker.

To finish the activit y, bend a brown fuzzy stick to look like antlers and add glue along the center. Insert the glued part of the antlers into the top of the reindeer face and push down to attach.

Once the Reindeer Paper Plate Craf t Ornament is dry, it can be hung on a gift, a tree, or even a wreath. As you can see, the decorations are adorable and are simple to put together.

Connecting to Free College and Training Programs…

W

hile the pandemic has disrupted employment in many industries, some sectors are booming and in need of skilled workers. If you’re looking for a job or thinking about a change, funding for college and training programs are available. Every year millions of dollars in federal, state, and local financial aid for college and technical schools are left untapped in our region because people aren’t aware of the funding resources.

These include grants and scholarships that can help community members achieve their dreams of earning a college degree or certificate for a career that pays family-sustaining wages.

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is part of a local coalition called REACH Manatee working to help connect people to these financial resources and complete a college or training credential.

The community collaborative is comprised of leaders from the local colleges, nonprofits, foundations, employers, and the Manatee County School District. The group is focused on increasing college and credential rates for Manatee County residents.

Each month, WRC hosts a free virtual information session called Career Connections to inform community members about these funded training opportunities and quality jobs in our area. Local colleges and employers participate and share information about how to pursue these in-demand career pathways. Participants can join by phone or computer and ask questions via a chat box during the live session.

Recent Career Connections guests include State College of Florida (SCF) and Manatee Technical College (MTC) who currently have funded “rapid credentialing’ training programs in fields such as Healthcare (like Medical Laboratory Assisting, EMT, Phlebotomy, Patient Care Technician, CNA); Technology (like Applied Cybersecurity - CompTIA Security+); Manufacturing (Like Solid Works, Production Technician, Logistics); Business (Insurance 440 License, Court Reporting); and the Trades (like Plumbing). These are just some of the available programs.

Another resource often overlooked by adults is the Pell Grant program.By completing the federal financial aid form known as FAFSA at the website fafsa.gov, individuals who have completed high school or a GED program are eligible for up to $6,300 in college aid. This is not a loan, but rather a grant for free money which can be used to pay for tuition, books, and even living expenses.

In partnership with local financial aid specialists and community volunteers, REACH Manatee offers virtual workshops to high school seniors on how to complete this FAFSA form, and they can help adults as well. Many people mistakenly assume that the funds are only for recent high school graduates when this is not true.

WRC is not only committed to helping individuals connect to these college and career opportunities, our trained staff and volunteers provide mentoring services to college students to help them navigate the higher education process.

This can include assistance with accessing resources for things such as childcare support, academic tutoring, and emergency funds. Mentors can help with career exploration, mock interviews, and salary negotiations. Most importantly, mentors provide emotional support and encouragement to college students of all ages and backgrounds to help them successfully complete their programs and start a new career.

INGREDIENTS

• 36 Oreos • 8 oz cream cheese • 16 oz white chocolate • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract • 40 peppermint candies

SPARKLING POPSICLE MOCKTAIL

PREPARATION

Celebrate the new year with a 4-step sparkling popsicle mocktail!

1. Put cream cheese and Oreos in a food processor 2.

Form the mixture into bite sized balls.

Melt white chocolate in 30 second intervals.

Add peppermint extract once it is thoroughly melted.

Crush peppermint candies until they are into small pieces.

Cover the Oreo ball with white chocolate.

Before the chocolate melts, coat with crushed peppermint.

Let dry and enjoy!

PREPARATION

1. Take a glass for your drink and pour in however much sprite you want.

ur homes have turned into much more than places to relax and spend time together. There are many new distractions as families work from home, educate children, and focus on staying healthy. With those distractions come safety risks inside our homes that often go unnoticed.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, on average, 2,200 children die each year from an injury in a home. Approximately 3.5 million children visit the emergency department for the types of injuries that may happen inside a home. Safe Kids Florida Suncoast recommends some tips to create a safer space for your entire family.

Scan each room for safety hazards Looking at safety in your home room by room is the recommended way to secure your home. Start with the living room and apply this method to all rooms in your house.

LIVING ROOM • Make sure all furniture is secured. Using brackets, wall straps, anchors, braces, and other anti-tip devices can help prevent furniture from tipping over if your child happens to climb on it or pull on drawers. You can request a furniture-anchoring kit from Conner’s Legacy Foundation.

• Flat-screen televisions can also tip over very easily. Make sure any flat-screen televisions are mounted to the wall. If you have a box-style T.V., make sure it is positioned on a low table that is secured.

• Small objects are choking hazards for young children. Make sure small items are not at the child’s eye level and are out of reach. When playing games, always follow the ageappropriate restrictions on the game or toys. Visit Safe Kids Worldwide at www.safekids.org to learn about product recalls on household items.

KITCHEN • While cooking, use back burners on your stove and turn handles of pots away from the edge of the stove. Keep all hot liquids and foods away from this edge. This makes it less likely for young children to reach the pot and spill its hot contents.

• Keep cleaning products out of a child’s reach or use childproofing locks or latches on cabinets to prevent children from entering the area where the cleaning items are stored.

STAIRS • If your house has multiple floors, secure the staircases using safety gates. Secure the top and bottom ends of the stairs by attaching the gates to the walls, if possible.

• Window guards are another safety option for multi-story homes. These safety products prevent children from falling out of open windows.

BEDROOMS • Safe sleeping conditions are especially important for children under the age of 1. A baby’s crib should only have a firm mattress with a fitted sheet. Keep all toys, blankets, and pillows out of the crib at night and during naps.

• It is safe to share your room with your baby. Babies should be placed to sleep on their backs in their crib. Parents should not bring their children to sleep with them on the couch or in their bed.

BATHROOMS • Families may store medications in the bathroom or in other rooms of the home. Medicine may be tempting because it can look like candy to a child. Store medications in tamper-proof containers out of reach and sight of children. If your child ingests medication, cosmetics, detergent pods, chemicals, or other substances, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

• Remember to watch children at all times when they are in or around water. Empty all tubs, buckets, and containers immediately after use and store them upside down so they do not collect water.

• Close all toilet seat lids and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning. Keep the door to the bathroom closed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Laundry and dishwasher detergent pods may pose hazards to children. Keep these out of reach and sight.

• If there is a firearm in your home, safe storage is key. The safest way to store a firearm is unloaded with a child-resistant gunlock — some law enforcement agencies may be able to provide you with a lock or guide you on where to find one. The firearm should be out of sight and out of reach of children in a locked container or safe. Ammunition should be stored separately from the firearm in its own locked container. Children as young as 3 years old may be strong enough to pull a trigger. Leaving a firearm in your closet, on a nightstand, or anywhere a child can access can lead to injuries and fatalities.
