A Visionary And Fearless Advocate How two long-standing ELC board members and child care providers remember Paul Sharff WORDS: Gabrielle Versmessen

W

hen the devasting news started to emerge on January 12th of this year that Paul Sharff, Chief Executive Officer at the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, had suddenly passed away, there was an outpouring of profound grief. It hit hard. It was very hard for two ladies who had known the man for many years. As a friend. As a CEO. And most of all, as an advocate for the profession they have dedicated themselves to.

Jennifer Passmore, the owner of Woodland Early Childhood Center on SR70, is the Vice-Chair at the Coalition. Annette Larkin, the owner of Happy Cubs next to Blake Hospital, is the long-time Childcare Provider Representative. Both were in at the start in 2008 when Paul went from the man the Governor appointed to steady the ELC ship to the man who would transform the agency into what it is today.

So when they heard the terrible news, there was utter shock and devastation.

Gone was a friend. Gone was the man who fought every day to get them more money and resources to help the children in their care. But now, three months on from his sad passing, there is time to reflect on what they all achieved. Together.

Jennifer Passmore recalled: "ELC had just gone through these very difficult challenges, and the Executive Director resigned, and Paul came on as the Chair. He was just so enthusiastic and very "Yeah! We're going to change the world!" He had an immediate presence, and that was before he was the Executive Director. He was just a volunteer governor-elected appointee.

"You just don't expect that level of enthusiasm. It was like, "Wow! We're really in for it. This is going to be a fun ride." We were exhausted; we were demoralized; it was just a very difficult

time that we were coming through. So to have Paul show up with all of his Paulness, enthusiasm, excitement, and can-do attitude was refreshing. That was Paul. He was relentless."

Like Jennifer, Annette saw the Sharff whirlwind sweep in. But she had already known what Paul would bring to the table.

She smiled: "I met Paul when my children were in third grade. I was PTO president at Stewart Elementary, and he was my Vice President. So, he and I had been friends for a very long time, and we just stayed in touch. At that time, I sat on the ELC Board, and we had some issues and the Governor asked Paul to step in and temporarily chair the Board, and once we got all the issues settled, we asked him to stay and become our Executive Director.

"It was really important for Paul to have a connection with the providers. Back then, there wasn't any connection. If you

didn't use the ELC, you had no idea what took place there. And even if you did use it, there was no one to reach out to as a provider and say, "These are the issues we're having; where do we go and have it resolved?" So, he had a provider rep position created on the Board. When he put me on, he said, "We want the providers to be heard, that we're meeting their needs.

So, your job is to let them know you're there and to develop that relationship.

"Within months of Paul moving in, things started to even back out. He started to realize what was happening, not just financially in the community, but the quality.

He made some rapid changes, but he saw them. That's what floors me when I think back. Nobody really had to tell him, just the fact that he could see the lack of quality care. He said, "There's no base for what quality is, for what we should be teaching.

Right now, we're just giving care when really we should be educating them and giving them the tools they need to be successful for when they go into kindergarten."

Paul was all about getting into the facilities and sending his people out, saying, "Your VPK is now up and running, but your scores are terrible," and the providers would say, "well, they're terrible because we don't know what we're supposed to be teaching." And at that point, he made the connection between the department of education and early childhood, saying, "What is it that these kids need to know and recognize by kindergarten?"

He instantly asked: 'How come we don't have a college professor that teaches education on this Board? Why don't we have a pediatrician?" He realized quickly that the Board needed to be made up of people that were aware of what children needed. And if they weren't aware, then at least some people that had connections to help us get to where we needed to go.'

Jennifer believes that there wasn't a minute of the day that Paul stopped thinking about how he could make Manatee County a better place. And he was never far from the front line when trouble came along.

Just over two years ago, there was chaos at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supplies needed to keep child care centers safe and functioning were running low.

Paul's biggest concern was that facilities would close and folks, especially essential front-line workers, would not be able to do

their jobs as there would be no one open to look after their children.

He went to amazing lengths to procure hand sanitizing stations, PPE, additional funding; COVID might have been rampaging through communities, causing havoc, but in Manatee County, the message when it came to child care was clear from the ELC. Jennifer explained: "During COVID, Paul worked really hard on connecting providers with essential workers. For example, we (Woodland) took in a bunch of kids where their parents were essential workers, who had to work, who could not stay home.

Paul got on the phone and said, 'Jennifer, what can you do? How many spots can you give me? We have all these essential workers who need a place for their kids, and I've got schools that are having to shut down. You're open, don't close! Whatever you do, don't close.'

"And then he connected us with people that needed childcare so that they could keep working. From the beginning of the pandemic until the end of the school year, we had 150 elementary kids that were here. We had laptops set up for everybody.

Our staff was helping the kids so that their parents could work, and Paul was the one who made those kinds of things happen.

He had influence, he knew people, he connected people, he was a master at being able to do that, and working alongside the Superintendent made that happen.

"He was a visionary leader. To cast that vision, he would go see an organization or a company, and he would just say these things, and they would be like, 'Here's our money! What can we do to help?' - he was just that infectious."

Annette smiles as she fondly remembers the memories. While the pain is still fresh, she remains on the ELC board and is determined to help the agency continue its mission of enhancing the lives of every child in Manatee County. How does she recall the journey with Paul?

"Well, Paul was always about the destination, not the journey, so to speak," she laughed, "He didn't care how he got there; he just wanted to get there. That was the burning passion in him – 'I don't care that we're not supposed to be doing that. In order to get there, this is what we need to do. So, let's just do that.' But ultimately, he would do things in such a way that wouldn't warrant a reprimand but rather praise on getting the goal accomplished. He has changed the quality of childcare in this community a thousandfold, easily."

W

hen the senior leadership at the School District of Manatee County faced new Early Learning challenges or initiatives that called for community collaboration, there was only one person they considered bringing it all together – Paul Sharff.

O ver many years, and work ing on countless projects, Superintendent Cynthia Saunders and Interim Executive Director of Curriculum and Professional Learning Dr. Robin Thompson saw the phenomenon that was Paul in full flow.

Armed with all the contacts and ideas of how to raise funding, they witnessed a man on a mission to enhance the lives of local children in any which way he could.

From literacy programs to retrofitting buses into mobile classrooms and sharing data on program outcomes, it would be hard to find a closer working relationship in the state than the one the School District has with its local Early Learning Coalition (ELC). And much of that was down to Paul's vision, energy, and perseverance.

As Superintendent Saunders explained: "One of the things that were discovered early on was that we struggle with gradelevel reading by the third grade, and that's a big focus for this community.

Our demographics and population have changed tremendously in the last 10-15 years, and we knew that we were going to need to do some different things if we were going to improve the levels.

"So, we formulated a grade-level reading campaign initiative. It was spearheaded by United Way, but we needed many partners beyond just the School District - and Paul Sharff at the Early Learning Coalition was one of those partners.

"We partnered with the ELC so that they could provide part of the funding of our pre-K classrooms so that we're able to provide a whole day experience for pre-K children. Whereas ten years ago, you may have had 10, 15 pre-K classrooms, we now have over 100 pre-K classrooms district-wide. If the ELC hadn't partnered with the school board, we would not have

been able to expand or offer the number of pre-K opportunities that we have to provide a whole day of school and easily transition the children into kindergarten.

"Partnership with Paul was through a collaboration of working together, but I would also consider him a friend, a colleague. We were very much supportive of things he was trying to do to expand or improve the ELC. If there were initiatives that he felt very close-aligned with his agency's philosophy, then he supported our agency. It really was mutual respect. I met him through our working relationship and, through that, evolved into a friendship.

"Paul worked with us on our Soar-in-4 program. Whenever we would have community events where we were trying to get parents' information and involved to sign up for pre-K, they would always be there with a table to provide information. The goal was to make sure that parents were aware of pre-K opportunities and what best served their family's needs. We really did try to support one another's organizations.

"Paul was very positive. Always the glass half full kind of guy. It didn't seem to matter if there were barriers out there for whatever initiatives we were working on.

He would always find ways to overcome that through collaboration and working with different agencies.

"It's a huge loss for our community and our collective partnership with our organizations. I'm sure we'll find a way to pick it up and keep it going because what was in place was bigger than any of us.

But he was a driving force."

Sadly for Dr. Thompson – who also sits on the ELC board - she was one of the last people to spend time with Paul before his tragic passing. She recalled: "I met with him for lunch on Tuesday, January 11th, and he died sometime during that night. We talked about his two boys Ian and Evan, and what we needed to move ahead with on the various initiatives we were working on.. He was completely fine; we were laughing and joking. Paul was really a wonderful colleague - I wish we had more people like him that were open to collaboration."

One of the many ideas Paul had been working on with Dr. Thompson was bringing a children's museum to Manatee County. He had gone around Florida and even visited other states to see existing museum's as his mind ticked over with what it would need to bring one to his hometown.

"We had gone to the Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa," said Dr. Thompson, "There were three of us from the School District, and he met us up there, and we were given a tour, and we talked about how we could make it better and do better.

I know that he had been to Lakeland and Naples Children Museums. He had lots of ideas. He was trying to generate some funding for it and what personnel we would need to oversee it, and how to select openended materials and resources. We were in the brainstorming stage. He had actually traveled to Boston Children's Museum too."

Being involved with the ELC board, Dr. Thompson also witnessed how Paul grew the agency over 15 years to one of the largest non-profits in Manatee County.

Each quarterly Board meeting would be an exciting Chief Executive Officer's report when Paul would update the members on all the varied projects the agency and

staff were working on. All with one target in mind – to make Manatee ELC the best in the state and to give every child in the programs a chance of success.

She smiled: "He was a lot of fun to work with. Never a dull moment. He was definitely a mover and a shaker. He welcomed ideas outside of the box. If it would be for the benefit of the children, he was willing to entertain any ideas.

"He always came to the table and included other participants. It was always a collaborative conversation. He was

very good with pulling other people and agencies in and working together to build momentum for an initiative. It was good to have an outside perspective rather than that of an educator.

"He came at it with a different lens. I think he was creating a legacy. He wanted to be known for something good, for the good work that he had accomplished.

He wanted to leave the community better than when he found it. I think that we're all committed to maintaining his collaboration.

He worked so hard for it, and we want to honor his memory."

LEAVING A LASTING IMPRESSION… WORDS: Gabrielle Versmessen

E

nriching the lives of young children and seeing them succeed is a goal that both Mary Glass, President of the Manatee Education Foundation, and Paul Sharff shared. Neither a stranger to not-for-profit work, their dual interest drove them to a partnership dating back around 15 years. However, she knew Paul beforehand through her mother, Pat Glass, Manatee County's first female County Commissioner serving 25 years. Through attending County events with her mother, Mary was first introduced to Paul and saw how involved he was in the local and state political scene.

Without a formal background in education, Paul was still able to use the skills that he mastered over the years, as well as the many connections he had made to excel above and beyond in his work with Early Learning.

Mary laughed: "With Paul, you couldn't say "no." He had such a big heart. You knew he was going for something good."

Still amazed at the encompassment of Paul's work, Mary added: "The biggest thing was that he was so dedicated to Early Learning, literacy, and helping the VPK teachers. I found him to be extremely resourceful. He always found innovative ways to come up with solutions, like how he created the STEAM Machine (mobile educational vehicle). You could travel around with all these books and materials!

He was very clever in that way. He may not have been involved in education before he was in that position at ELC, but he really grew into it. He really advanced the funding and the scope of work they did."

Paul accepting a donation from the AMI Privateers About three weeks prior to Paul's passing, he and Mary had, what she calls, one of the best meetings they've ever had. They sat and talked about what they were both working on, the nitty-gritty of their partnership, his children's museum ideas, and new training for social-emotional learning (SEL). Paul wanted to do something on a grand scale to include VPK and the district teachers, and Mary recalls making so many notes during that meeting that she ended up sending Paul an email later that day to make sure she captured it all. Paul's response: "This is so great, Mary. I'm so glad you captured everything."

"Paul always thought about everything on a grand scale. Like the Prayer Breakfast started out at Renaissance on 9th, and it was packed, but still! That place was small.

And the last Breakfast I went to was like 600 people at the Manatee Civic Center.

"Another big area that brought Paul and I together was Dr. Robin Thompson (Manatee School District). She was on both of our Boards. That communication amongst us all has been critical to helping all of us work together. We have Soar-in-4 and Paul helped with the books and the STEAM Machine. It's all that synergy of the right people in the district at the right organizations at the right time

that make it happen. We all know how to work together.

"He had a great relationship with the Superintendent, as do I. I think everybody working together to get connected really helped create that fusion of collaboration. It wasn't a territorial environment. Sometimes all it took was just asking the right questions.

Like he would ask, 'what are you doing with Soar-in-4? How can I help?'

"He also spent a lot of time in Tallahassee working on behalf of children. Before he passed, he had just been before the County Commission to talk about bringing local child care licensing to Manatee County. So, he was always advocating at the State level, and he knew how to do that. Not many people know how to do something like that."

His passion for helping kids started long before it reached County and State-wide levels. Mary recalled: "One of the biggest things is that he was a good Father. That part of him was well known. Like when his kids were at Stewart Elementary, he was always doing the fundraising and was a big part of the PTO. And that was way before he was with the ELC. "He had a good team around him too. And that's critical for anyone, but especially

with the size of his organization. I know he had a lot of good people that I had worked with and that he would guide us too if we had any questions. Plus, he really had quite the bond with Darrell King. When he found Darrell and they created NextGen, I thought that was genius. Especially with my marketing background, I really thought what they did was genius. Darrell had the experience. No one had ever really done anything like that where these magazines were going in the backpacks of all these kids, so they're communicating with the parents, the teachers, and the community.

You can see them in all the community offices! There are a lot of great stories about people."

When asked if she can recall a stand-out memory with Paul, Mary said: "I would just say everything was so ongoing that it wasn't just one thing; it was everything.

It was the scholarships, talking about leadership, VPK grants, always being supportive of events I was doing; those things were moving to me. It was really magical. I always could count on him."

Tearfully, she ended her recount by saying: "I have great sadness about him being gone and knowing that gap is always going to be there."

Wading His Way In Agricultural Conservation…

J

ust as the crest of the sun started to spill over the horizon, he placed his bicycle on the rack, hurled his bag of equipment over his shoulder, and headed down the familiar trail at Robinson Preserve.

wasn't his day job, but he'd made a name for himself locally, publishing a book called "The Birds of Robinson Preserve," with images he collected over the years. He even had an exhibit of his photography at a local art gallery.

Once he arrived at the perfect spot, Mac Carraway assembled his camera. He waded into the shallow water looking to the mangroves for his most soughtafter subject, the elusive reddish egret.

This bird is different from the others he photographs as it uses a unique strategy to catch fish, raising its wings to create shade and dancing around the fish in a celebratory display.

Sometimes he pictured himself as one of the wading birds at the preserve, navigating the delicate landscape and adjusting to the influx of the human population and the development that came along with it. It helped him make complicated management decisions while serving as the President of Carraway Consulting Group, a financial, agricultural, green industry, and water-policy firm he started in June of 2014. In between meetings and Zoom calls, Carraway would flip through

his book of birds and ask himself, "What would they do?"

Carraway's guidance and decision-making recently earned him the 5th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership.

In the nomination process, colleagues described Carraway as a "humble leader with a steadfast commitment to efforts that enhance Manatee County's economy and quality of life."

In his acceptance speech, Carraway referenced his lifelong mantra to "always do the right thing, no matter what."

It's an outlook he adapted from Bartz himself, who served as president for the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce for 35 years and encouraged Carraway to

"Getting to work with people who serve the community at that level was a privilege," he said. "Being part of a strong coalition with folks that had the best interests of the community was something I enjoyed very much. Everyone's heart was in the right place."

It's not his fascination with flight that got him ascending to the top of his field. Instead, hard work and patience, collaboration, and humility are all attributes that advanced his profession and brought his photography to the next level.

Honesty and fairness were important lessons Carraway learned from his father growing up in Tallahassee and then imparted on his son, David. Even if he didn't benefit from it, the idea of doing the right thing was something he and his wife Phyllis practiced in their daily lives.

When he and his family came to the area in 1992, Carraway fell in love with the coastline but quickly understood that water issues would be important. As a lover of water and nature, he immersed himself in water policy, joining key committees and initiatives he hoped would preserve Manatee County's unique landscape while still serving the influx of tourists and new residents that seemed to increase every year.

"Water conservation can be a complicated and sometimes controversial subject," said Carraway. "Over my career, I've developed a deeper understanding of the complex management issues our area faces while still working to conserve the things about Florida that make it a place people want to visit and live. The good news is we can do both."

Carraway became a statewide leader in water policy circles, serving on the board of 20

the Southwest Florida Water Management District's (SWFWMD) Agricultural and Green Industry Advisory Committee for over 15 years. His SWFWMD experience has supported numerous projects and funding, benefiting Manatee County and its water and environmental resources.

One of the family-friendly campaigns Carraway likes to promote is the "Skip A Week" movement, directed at lawn irrigation during the winter, when grass doesn't require a lot of water.

"Giving the public more knowledge about Florida watering cycles is helping save half the water they could have been using," he said. "It's a beautiful message that has had a big impact on utility bills and the environment."

Carraway also endorses Florida-friendly landscaping and Florida-friendly fertilization as a way that families can make a positive impact on the environment.

T he initiati ve s he's most proud of professionally and personally have directly impacted his favorite place, Robinson Preserve. Forward Manatee, a half-cent tax referendum benefitting roads, law enforcement, community safety, parks, and preserves, will bring in nearly half a billion dollars to the county over the life of its implementation.

Carraway served as the Chair of the Manatee Count y Citizens Financial Structure Advisory Board in promoting the successful passage of the referendum working with Bradenton Mayor Wayne

"Everybody wants to be a bald eagle, an apex bird on the top of the food chain, but my best experiences come if you don't act like a predator," he said. "Walking and wading amongst the birds, that's when you get the best results."

It's no surprise that Carraway is recognized for his community efforts as much as his professional ones. He is a current board member and past President of the Manatee County Agricultural Museum and has also worked with the Manatee County Clerk and the Friends of the Florida Maritime Museum. He currently ser ves as the Consulting E xecutive Director of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation, Inc., a non-profit statewide consortium focused on the environmental and human health benefits of urban greenspaces.

Beyond water and agriculture, Carraway was involved in several Manatee County education initiatives, including as a past Chairman of the Manatee County Schools Foundation (the predecessor to the Manatee Education Foundation) a nd a s a founding m e mb e r of th e former Manatee Education Alliance.

Both focused on improving education outcomes for the county's students, teachers, and schools.

Well deserving of the Bartz Award for a lifetime of achievements that mimic his mantra, Carraway's humble public acceptance was probably no surprise to those who know him. But behind closed doors, perhaps he embraced the essence of his photography subjects and raised his arms in a celebratory dance of achievement, much like his favorite egret does before it catches a fish.

arol Butera's path to philanthropy began with an interest in helping others. Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Carol received her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Northern Arizona University. After graduating, she moved to Kentucky and started working as a Crisis Intervention Counselor from midnight until 8:00 in the morning. This experience of seeing the pain and struggles that families have due to drug addiction, poverty, and lack of opportunity furthered her interest in finding ways to assist those in need.

Over time, Butera watched what the Selby Foundation was doing due to the nature of her fundraising for other non-profits. Seeing how William G. and Marie Selby were stewards in the community and how their core values aligned with her own, she made it a goal to work for the organization. After a job opening presented itself, she made the move and became the President and CEO. Carol shared, "(I wanted to work) with organizations to develop great programs that can have a good impact for change."

She then moved to Ohio and received a master's degree at The Ohio State University in Social Work. As she continued her career as a counselor, she would receive calls from families affected by domestic violence. At that time, there were no shelters available for victims; Carol explained that when a family was in crisis, "I would have to call individuals or friends and say, can you take this person for a night or two so we can get them safe." Through working with the Attorney General, she was able to aid in the process of Ohio becoming one of the first states to collect a fee from each Marriage License to fund Domestic Violence Shelters.

Carol's journey then led her to work in planning and administration for health facilities and eventually to an international move to Haiti for fundraising and program development at Hospital Albert Schweitzer.

Since then, she has worked in development for St. Stephens Episcopal School, fundraising at the YMCA in Sarasota, and working with Children First, an agency specializing in strengthening a family's well-being through education and opportunity.

Founded in 1955 by William G. and Marie Selby, "humanity, humility, social responsibility, and innovation" are the core values of the Selby Foundation. Its mission is stated as "By investing in people through academic scholarships and supporting capital projects of local organizations, the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation looks beyond what is and enables change for what can be." Through this, they can assist non-profits via grants and individuals in need that are seeking scholarships in Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, or Sarasota Counties.

Carol then told the story of when William, also known as Bill, and Marie were alive. People did not know about their wealth and how they were distributing funds to provide opportunities to others. She explained that Bill had worked for his father's company in the oil fields alongside the workers. He stated that the only difference between himself and those employees was education; they hadn't had the same opportunity. That experience became part of why both Bill and Marie wanted to provide assistance to those in need.

families, and grant monies provided for afterschool resources to create a Boys and Girls Club in DeSoto County. You can even see the impact at the Early Learning Coalition through a grant that provided access to those with disabilities allowing entry to access materials on the book bus.

Responsibilities as President & CEO As President and CEO, Carol provides oversight of the day-to-day operations and implements the vision and values of the donors and the board. She also manages the Selby Foundation's funds and helps determine where those monies will go, with the Board of Directors finalizing all grants. When making these decisions, she asks questions like, "Where can we make the biggest impact in our community, will that change be made, and will it be here 3, 5, or 10 years from now?" The Selby Foundation started originally with 19 million dollars and now distributes over 3 million dollars each year via grants and scholarships. The Foundation has grown to over 80 million dollars and, through wise investment, will continue to fund non-profit initiatives and scholarships into perpetuity.

There is also a Spring and Fall Grant Cycle. According to the Selby Foundation website, applicants are restricted to 501(c) 3 non-profit entities (or equivalent) located within Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, or DeSoto counties. In addition, a smaller grant program was developed during the pandemic called the SAM (Small and Mighty) to assist non-profits looking for smaller donation amounts to aid in immediate need projects. These grants are available once a quarter and are open to organizations with less than $300,000 in annual operating expenses.

This year, as part of the Spring Grant Cycle, Carol will review 34 applications and research and meet with many organizations in person. She continued, "…you can be part of so many pieces of change, and keep organizations focused on service delivery instead of purchasing the capital improvements."

Impacts of the Selby Foundation You probably have visited an organization impacted by the Selby Foundation or even utilized services created by a grant. The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature was able to purchase air handlers with their grant funds to allow for traveling air quality-controlled exhibits. The Selby Library, also started by the same benefactor but separate from the Foundation, was built with monies from the Foundation and given a grant to help expand their digital library service. All Faiths Food Bank was granted funds to purchase trucks to distribute food to families in need.

During the pandemic and with safety precautions in mind, the SunCoast Blood Centers was assisted in creating a concierge service by funding vans to take blood donations at people's homes. Children First replaced their roof, allowing for continued funding of the great works they provide for 700 children and their 30

As for scholarships, high school seniors from low-income families in the four-county area can apply for the “Selby Scholars” program.

During the scholarship selection process, a group of 12 volunteers will then determine 40 students out of about 150 applicants that will receive up to $7,000 each year for the next four years of their education. Currently, the Selby Foundation is providing financial assistance to 160 College students. In addition, grant monies are provided to institutions like State College of Florida, and technical colleges, who will then determine where the scholarship goes within their organization.

Making a Difference in Lives Carol explained that one of the favorite parts of her job is "hearing from the organizations about the incredible work that they are doing." she continued, "It is remarkable what volunteers and paid staff are doing on a daily basis to connect people, to make a change, to be involved, to make the world a better place…."

She also shared that she enjoys the interviews with the Selby Scholar Applicants and their stories of perseverance. Carol told the story of one Selby Scholar who was homeless, and his family was living out of his car. He would get up in the morning and drive his mother to work, drop his sister off at school, and would then go to school himself. He not only maintained straight A's but also took accelerated classes. Butera concluded, "That's what I love about the job, hearing the stories about life and change and people's courage."

CATCHing on to Health!

"G

O, SLOW, and WHOA!" are words one can hear children shouting when participating in the CATCH Early Childhood program. These catchphrases are readily recognized and easy to remember for young students when identifying healthful foods. Although the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) program has been nationwide since 1988, Manatee CATCH has been around for about three years. The program is facilitated by the Early Learning Coalition (ELC) and is designed to encourage physical activity and teach healthy eating habits to preschool-aged children. The ELC's CATCH program started with ten sites and has grown to 15.

CATCH has three components. The first is "it's fun to be Healthy!”

Classroom curricula consisting of interactive nutrition and garden-

based lesson plans. The second component is structured physical activities provided in a CATCH EC Physical Activity Box. The third component is "Family Education" and helps parents incorporate these healthy habits at home for children, so it becomes a part of their way of life. These lessons and activities only take approximately 30 minutes each.

ELC’s Doris Papa is a CATCH program educator who goes out to schools to provide and teach the curriculum. "The teachers are to do the program at least three times a week, but preferably daily, and then the ELC comes in twice a month to guide the teachers and observe," she says.

Many of the CATCH sites in Manatee County are funded through a grant from the Children Services Advisory Board, and

these particularly funded sites require the child to live in a specific zip code.

At Harvest United Methodist Church's early childhood center, Just Grow, CATCH has been used since November of 2021. No stranger to education involvement, Leanne Badham, Director of Just Grow, has been a certified trainer for the Division of Early Learning and the Early Learning Coalition of Collier County until her move to Manatee County in June of 2021. She says that not only do these young students love the CATCH program, but the parents do too!

"All of our parents are really involved. We have a PTA, and they love any program that comes with learning about health," says Leanne. Along with CATCH, Just Grow has been a part of the ELC's STEAM Machine. They also include yoga, cooking, and music woven into their extracurriculars. While their philosophy and open curriculum are very similar to that of the Montessori school, Leanne says the most significant difference is just a bit more structure and separation in age groups in order to include age-appropriate learning activities for each child. Here, the CATCH program is geared toward the VPK students, and all other extracurriculars include ages two and older.

he Early Learning Coalition is thrilled to implement our Raising A Reader (RAR) program once more! RAR aims to stimulate the imagination, connect to a larger world, and formulate bonding memories for families with young children.

Each week, a child brings home a bag of high-quality books to borrow. At the end of the 6-24 week program, families are connected to their local library to continue the joy of reading together at home in order to help sustain the practice of borrowing and sharing books. RAR was in nine child care sites with a total of 251 children in the program back in 2019-2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Moving forward, we are creating a greater sense of community amongst our families. We hope to have two family nights at each site during the program. The first family night is to help families and teachers understand the importance of early literacy, how to get children excited about reading, how to effectively run the program at home/in classrooms, and to create a meaningful connection to local libraries.

Our second family night will be an evening where families can meet a local librarian who will have a fun activity for the children to do.

Dinner will be provided and there will be a presentation to inform families about the program and why we do it.

Our goal is to expand RAR to over 300 children and ten or more sites. We are replacing materials that have been damaged over time and ensuring our books are a range of topics that can interest all early readers!

Combating Parenting Burnout...

Child-centered parenting has its benefits. It's caring, loving, and often quite natural (except when our kids are driving us crazy, of course, and we're working really hard not to lose it).

I loved that they wanted my attention, don't get me wrong, but does this sound at all familiar in your home? I'm sure it does.

We want our children to have everything, naturally, so we try to give everything.

Sure, in the short term, that paper is printed, and your child gets the survey completed just when they want it. Maybe they get the shiny new object they've been dying for at the store. But if you're

One of my teens was asking me while another one was simultaneously pulling on me to print something their other teacher wanted them to have before lessons began.

The third child was giving me that painstaking look of trying to be patient while I tended to the other two.

However, whether we're single or married, not empowering our kids to do some of life themselves could wreak havoc and do the very opposite of what we're intending to do.

not careful, a lack of self-care in the midst of caring for the kids can actually leave a long-term burden on your children.

When we don't care for ourselves, a stress-induced disaster or illness can occur, whether from lack of sleep, improper eating habits, or the resulting anxiety and depression. Parent overload is a slippery slope, and I know you don't want it.

But is there another way? To a degree, no. By its very nature, love is sacrifice, and we must do exactly that to be good parents. But is there another way to love? Absolutely yes.

If your children are school-aged or older, there are so many ways they can indeed help out at home and many ways you can get self-care. You will also be less of a burden on your kids long-term because, in the short term, you empowered them as well as taught them about your need for rest and boundaries, right?

Though there are countless variations of ways you can get selfcare, here are five tips for helping you get started. If you practice even some of them, it will help you to avoid parent burnout and still allow you to remain an awesome parent.

1. Take a decompressing walk every day. Don't just make it a quick run with the dog but really enjoy yourself and allow yourself to take a break from devices while you walk as well.

Stay safe and in well-lit areas, so there are no safety issues, and just relax, unwind, and allow yourself a solid time of getting those healthy steps in.

4. Take time for parent and child one-on-one dates. Between

all the reminders to brush their teeth and do homework, we can lose the pure enjoyment of just being a parent and child, a relationship we will want to go on in a healthy manner long-term for both of our sakes. Nurture the bond by doing fun things together, and if you don't have much in common, trade doing something you enjoy. For instance, one week, you can play Pokémon together, and the next, you two can hit up the library and Starbucks. No judgment if you're the Pokémon week!

5. Keep a hobby just for you. This final tip is so important. You

will be a person longer than the eighteen or so years they live with you. It's imperative that you remember what you love also.

Whether you're in a fun season of axe-throwing, card playing, scrapbooking, or baking, let your kids see you nurturing your other gifts and talents.

The bottom line is that our kids want us to care for them, but they will respect us more when they see us respecting ourselves. Even if your kids don't fully get it yet, I know later they will appreciate all the ways you are setting them - and you - up for success as you model lifelong wellness.

2. Save money for retirement. Don't say yes to every amusement

park trip and new gadget. Be crafty with empowering your kids as they learn self-control, raise money, use older devices, and help produce their own creative ways of having free fun.

Meanwhile, let them know that many parents aren't thinking about the long-term, but you are making way for them in the future as you save for it now.

3. Go on date nights with yourself or your spouse or friends.

It's so important that you don't just trade in your fun times when you become a parent. My husband and I love to go on dates along the water and take walks together, talking and dreaming. It's also important to do this with friends or on your

ave you ever left a conversation feeling as if you misrepresented yourself? Although your intentions are good, you may bend to the perspective of those around you or actively choose to craft your response according to what someone else may need to hear.

We need to start looking at authenticity as the ultimate form of self-care. Especially as women, we often navigate situations to best serve those around us. This act can quickly turn into compromising our own beliefs and feelings. When we don't live "authentically," we stand to betray ourselves.

There is power and strength in showing up as yourself and believing that is enough. How can we learn to harness our authentic selves to let our unique perspectives and life experiences shine?

"The Power of Authenticity" is the topic of the second Wonder Women Collective event in the 2022 series, held in Bradenton on April 26th. The event is part of a series aimed to inspire, empower, and create a platform for the women in our community. The Women's Resource Center launched the Collective in 2020 when many of us were isolated, the world felt divisive, and we all needed to feel more connected.

As we continue into the third year of the Collective, the Women's Resource Center is thrilled to continue its partnership with Game On Nation to expand programming and content. During the April event, attendees are promised an interactive experience that will inspire and motivate your journey to living an authentic life.

How we show up makes a difference – at work, at home, and in our community. Showing up as your most authentic self allows you to be the main character in your life. During this interactive session, Game On Nation's Director of Client Experience, Erin Watson, will guide you through an uplifting experience focused on strategies that will empower you to be more present, own your words, and lift others through authentic connections. Come prepared to grow, connect, and experience joy, but, most of all, come as yourself.

The Wonder Women Collective is a platform created by the Women's Resource Center for women in our communit y to connect, share and empower each other. Kids in the Kitchen Mediterranean Salmon Kabobs INGREDIENTS • 1.5 lb Salmon fillet, cut into cubes approximately 1-inch to 1-½ inch or so in size • 1 zucchini, sliced into rounds • 1 small red onion, cut into squares • Kosher salt and pepper

Greek Yogurt Parfait INGREDIENTS • 1 cup Greek honey yogurt • 1 cup maple cinnamon granola • 1 cup mixed berries, sliced

PREPARATION 1. Take two stemless glass cups and add 3 tablespoons of yogurt.

2. Add 3 tablespoons of granola, then top with berries.

3. Repeat layers one time.

4. Dollop a teaspoon of yogurt, then sprinkle a little granola to top it off.

5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

For Marinade • ¼ cup to 1/3 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1 lemon, zested and juiced • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves • 2 tsp dry oregano • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp mild chili pepper

PREPARATION 1. In a small bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and zest, garlic, oregano, thyme, cumin, and chili pepper.

2. Place salmon pieces, zucchini, and onions in a large mixing bowl. Season with kosher salt and pepper and toss briefly. Now pour the marinade over the salmon and toss again to make sure the salmon is well coated. Marinate for 15-20 minutes.

3. Beginning with salmon, thread salmon, zucchini, and onions through skewers (if using wooden skewers, be sure to have soaked them in water for 30 minutes before using).

4. Heat an outdoor grill. Arrange salmon skewers on top and cover the grill. Grill salmon kabobs for 6 to 8 minutes, covered, or until the fish is opaque throughout, turning once midway through cooking.

W

hen I think of Spring, I think of flowers, bright colors, and, of course, being in Florida and the afternoon rain showers.

Since warm weather is here to stay, I thought a fun way to celebrate would be with a colorful butterfly craft.

My daughter and I have seen this made a couple of different ways with either crayons or markers but decided to add our own spin using a spray bottle for a tie-dye effect.

This activity is great for young children because it is a no-glue craft and allows them to use their creativity. Not to mention, it is wonderful for handeye coordination and can be used to reinforce color recognition.

If you would like to recreate this activity, you will need the following: coffee filters, clothespins, washable markers, fuzzy sticks aka pipe cleaners, spray bottle, sticky magnets, safety scissors and paper towels.

Tip: Most of these items can be found around your home or purchased from a craft store.

Directions: To get started, lay down paper towels to protect surfaces.

Then, select the color markers your child would like to use on the coffee filter.

Next, lay the coffee filter flat on the paper towel and start making designs with the markers. Your child can make rainbows, hearts, lines; the possibilities are endless. Once complete, take the spray bottle and lightly mist the areas that have been drawn on with the marker. You will see the colors start to fade and combine.

If your child wants the colors to mix, even more, pick up the coffee filter and let the water spread downward. Once complete, transfer the coffee filter to a new piece of paper towel to allow it to dry.

Tip: These coffee filters can also be turned into flowers. Simply follow the directions for the butterflies but instead of using the clothespin, take a fuzzy stick and wrap it around the folded accordion shape to make a flower design. You can take multiple coffee filters and combine them to make even bigger flowers.

You can now add the antenna to the top of the butterfly. Take a piece of pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Then, take one of the pieces and wrap it around the top of the open clothespin.

My daughter made five different designs. Afterward, we laid these out in the sun for about an hour.

Once complete, these butterflies can be displayed by adding a magnet on the back to hang on a refrigerator or another metal surface. You can also take another fuzzy stick and attach it to the butterfly and a craft stick and use that to insert the craft into a plant or a vase.

Next, it is time to start creating the butterflies. Take the dried coffee filter and start folding it like an accordion. Then, squeeze

e all recognize that teachers are amazing. They work with a multitude of children, each with individual learning styles, interests, and… quirks! They pour into their students, listening to fears and hopes, navigating family situations, bandaging knees and hearts. Oh, and they give children the tools to learn, grow, and evolve into productive citizens. That's just a few of their daily responsibilities.

Through the vision of Beth Duda, with support from The Patterson Foundation, the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (SCGLR) desired to show appreciation for our educators, especially in the wake of distance learning and the COVID pandemic. With that aspiration in mind, THIS BOOK IS COOL! In-School (TBICIS) was born. Since its birth in late 2020 and the program's implementation, more than 200 classrooms in the four-county region have participated in this program. Teachers receive three classroom books, three books for their students' home libraries, lesson plans, and other resources and support from the TBICIS team.

A recent Learn and Share Zoom was held with a small but mighty team of open and forthright teachers about what is working and areas where SCGLR can add more value. The teachers were 76

effusive about the quality of the program, the books, and the team.

One educator told us, "The pictures in Swim Fish were so colorful and engaging. Then, the children were so excited to learn that they could take the books home with them!"

Also noted was the quality of the provided lesson plans. This detail made teaching with the books very easy, yet the flexibility allowed teachers to tailor the lessons to their specific class needs. One teacher shared, "The activities and links give us more to do with the book, which is especially helpful to reluctant readers."

After sharing the book, What Do You Do With a Tail Like This, a teacher mentioned, "My students can't stop talking about tails and seeing them everywhere. The connections they made with this book have been fabulous!"

We learned that the educators heard about the program from various sources. Some found out about it from their school leadership or colleagues, while others had children who participated in the summer program. One reported finding out about it after seeing The POINT storefront at the Crossing at Siesta Key mall. All agreed that they would continue to share the program with their teacher friends as it is a phenomenal resource.

The teachers were willing to share improvements in the program, both from how they use it and what SCGLR can do better. One teacher said that when she does another round of books, she will communicate more with the parents about the program and how they can reinforce reading the book and participating in the corresponding activities at home. Another suggested that she didn't use the activity book that came with the information to its full benefit and would maximize that resource in the future.

The participants are also excited about doing a family engagement event for their students and families with a teaching artist to extend the learning further. While all acknowledge that engaging the families can be challenging, one teacher reflected on her family's fun last summer with our teaching artists and wanted her students to have the same experience.

SCGLR is excited to keep this program growing. As a teacher from one of the participating schools shared, "Our mission is to get more books in the hands of our students. If they don't have books at home, they aren't going to learn. This program is a game-changer, and every teacher should sign on!"

That's our hope too!

Fast-growing Lacrosse attracting more and more local kids…

"W

hat are those kids playing?" is a question that is still asked by both adults and kids when they drive by GT Bray Park during a weekday evening, as both boys and girls practice for the Manatee Wildcats Lacrosse program. Lacrosse is stated to be the oldest game played in North America, with its origins stemming from the Native Americans in the Northeast as early as the 17th century. Despite its widespread popularity in the Northeast and pockets throughout the United States, lacrosse is still new to many in Manatee County.

Dr. Charles Tomeo started the Manatee Wildcats Football and Cheer program

in 1986 with just 40 boys and ten girls as cheerleaders. For the past 36 years, Manatee County residents have enjoyed the familiar sights and sounds of football and cheer in the fall. "We grew instantly as we received support throughout the community," recalls Dr. Tomeo. "I actually sat with 'The GT Bray' as we planned the park named after him." He continues. "My success, as was the Wildcats' success, was due to the volunteers, both parents, and coaches, that supported the family concept that I developed!"

It was not until January of 2015 that the Manatee Wildcats found its perfect complement for the spring, as boys and

girls lacrosse teams were organized and took the field for the first time.

Lacrosse was a perfect fit for the Manatee Wildcats program. It should be no wonder as its founder, Dr. Charles Tomeo, was a lacrosse player and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey on a full lacrosse scholarship. "There were many people that tried to get youth lacrosse going in our area, and their influence and foundation were definitely felt and appreciated," claims Bowen Summer, President of the Wildcats.

The timing just seemed to be right in 2015, when Dr. Tomeo's son, Nick Pagnotta,

was finally able to get it going in West Bradenton. According to Dr. Tomeo, "My son believed in the concept, and when I decided to back away, he pushed ahead and made the Wildcats family even stronger with the installation of boys and girls lacrosse!" And it has certainly taken off. The Manatee Wildcats Lacrosse now enters its 8th season with over 175 players spread out among the boys and girls programs ranging in age from 5 to 14 years old.

Those that want to make money on the backs of children need not apply to our organization," states Dr. Tomeo.

Thankfully, the Manatee Wildcats quickly realized that youth football players and cheerleaders make pretty good lacrosse players. No one seemed to understand this fit better than the league president of the past eight years, Nick Pagnotta. As he is known, Coach Nick grabbed a handful of his Tiny Mite Football players and put lacrosse sticks in their hands.

The success of the marriage between a Pop Warner Football program and lacrosse became nationally recognized in just the second season of Manatee Wildcats lacrosse. Coach Nick took a leap of faith and entered his U9 boys’ team in the Summer Face-Off Lacrosse tournament, the largest in Florida. Despite it being the first tournament many of the Wildcats had ever seen, they took home the 2016 U9 Championship in dramatic fashion, to everyone's surprise. From that point on, the formula for success was very clear: get football players to play lacrosse, lacrosse players to play football, and both sports would flourish.

As he and his other assistants watched YouTube videos trying to learn about lacrosse, his little football players were running up and down the field, scoring goals, and winning games. Parents stepped up and volunteered to coach a sport they never played and, for some, had never seen. There are currently over 40 volunteer coaches with the Manatee Wildcats, both learning and teaching the

Tragically, Coach Nick Pagnotta died last year, in October of 2021. "The depth of his loss is something that will always be felt; however, his legacy and his foundation have already proven to be enduring," expressed Bowen Summers.

Many of those same kids that won the first Manatee Wildcat tournament in 2016, including his oldest son, Nicholas, gathered their emotions and entered the

same tournament held in December and went on to win again against a travel team from Baltimore, Maryland, in a last-second goal to take home the 14U A Division of the Orlando Open Lacrosse tournament.

"When Nick passed, we were fortunate e n o u g h to h ave B owe n S u m m e r s developing as one of our leaders," shared Dr. Tomeo. "He has not lost a beat and has kept the family together and growing stronger." He continued, "Bowen, as did Nick and I, have never believed in making a profit in our organization! We work on just charging the absolute minimum to keep our cost available to all children that want to be part of our family." In fact, the Wildcats offer scholarships to those in need based on the donations they receive every year.

With the rise of the Manatee Wildcats Lacrosse program, these youth players still needed a place to play in high school.

At the time of its inception, there were no public high schools that offered lacrosse as an official sport in Manatee County.

The Manatee Wildcats community led the way to get lacrosse at Manatee High School. The Wildcat board took turns speaking with our community at the high school cafeteria in March of 2017 to begin fundraising efforts to start a boys and girls lacrosse program at Manatee High School.

Manatee Wildcats board member Matt Faul would jump in to serve as its first Lacrosse Booster President, and the program is now in its 5th Season of boys and girls lacrosse.

The culmination for some of the early participants in the Manatee Wildcats lacrosse program has now led them to play in college at the highest level. Former Manatee Wildcats Lacrosse player (and cheerleader when she was younger), Molly Faul was just playing on ESPN as a midfielder for Furman University as they took on North Carolina University, the #2 ranked NCAA women's team in the country.

More Manatee Wildcats players are sure to follow in the college ranks as former Manatee Wildcat Lacrosse and Football player Elijah Stobaugh has committed to play at the University of Maryland; currently, the #1 ranked men's team in the country. Aside from reaching the college ranks, Manatee Wildcat Lacrosse players can now be found on current high school rosters, including Manatee, Lakewood Ranch, Saint Stephens, Cardinal Mooney, Bradenton Christian, IMG, Riverview, Northside Christian, and even Culver Academy in Indiana.

The future of lacrosse in Manatee County looks to be very bright.
