TATAWAW | WELCOME Nextfest marks the beginning of a long creative journey for a huge array of artists. For 27 years, we have fostered the growth and learning of thousands of artists who continue to practice and create on Treaty 6 land. We embody the spirit of newness and growth while respecting the deep roots planted by those who came before us. The Nextfest Arts Company acknowledges that we are situated on Treaty 6 territory, the home of the Nations of Cree, Nakota-Sioux, Blackfoot, Dene, Tsuu T’ina, Metis, and other Indigenous peoples who call this land home, who have created and gathered on these lands for thousands of years. At Nextfest, everyone is welcome exactly as they are. Our circle continues to grow and evolve with our artists as they grow and evolve, too. We are still learning, and promise to continue learning from past and future generations of artists who make Nextfest possible. COVID-19 SAFETY In this transition back to in-person art, we are working to ensure community safety is a top priority. Workshops will invite dedicated professional mentors and experts from the Edmonton arts communities to teach, lead, and facilitate workshops directed at artistic skill growth, the business of being an artist, and the sustainability of artistic careers.

It tells the story of an abandoned town which was briefly reinhabited by a community of people with various reasons for fleeing their previous homes. Unfortunately for these folks, the former ghost town carries cursed energy, some may even think of it as a gate to another world, and when a mysterious stranger appears in the area, their new lives quickly fall apart. In Host Town, the spirits of these souls recall the fateful day that everything went wrong. 20

As both sisters individually reckon with how 'indigenous' identity is interwoven with others' definitions they find themselves inspired to reclaim and embrace their culture.

She recounts her search for love to her audience of junior high school students as she processes the things she's done and the things that were done to her. This onewoman show is a modern-day adaptation of Eliza Haywood's 18th-century novella, set in the world of Tinder and gross hockey boys.

The show follows ted BAMO, a clown discovering the fantastical new online world where “likes” are a currency for self-worth and desire. As ted strives to get more likes, we watch him tackle the need for online popularity, cancel culture, influencers, and much more. Will ted survive in this new world or get consumed by it? Weaving movement, sound, songs, and projections, Kena will celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. They hope that other queer immigrants may also find parallels to their own journeys. Kena’s own parents also had to find their voice and resilience as they experienced their own immigrant journey, drawing from the generations they had to leave behind. We all pass through the doors opened up by generations of queer immigrants before us and contribute to opening spaces for generations yet to come. 23

Grace inevitably drags herself further and further into the depths of her psyche, where it becomes impossible to tell what is real or imagined.

The audience is able to glimpse into Stella’s most intimate moments including a kiss between her newborn self and her mother when she was first born, her first kiss with a woman, and a kiss that changes how she sees her world. The young adult-centered comedy-drama follows Stella as she deals with sexuality, change, and self-acceptance.

by Heids MacDonald featuring Shelly-Ann Morgan, Leah Hearne, and Amy Pohl Sunday, June 12 at 12:00 pm (noon) Audience talkback to follow Rehearsal Hall in the Roxy Theatre A nurse who works in a women’s prison is tasked with caring for an inmate who is dying of cancer. “Inmate” is a no-bullshit mystic with a love for song and strange hope in the midst of pain and darkness. “Nurse” is a queer woman who grew up in a homophobic, religious town, and was burned by religion and now has little use for God. The two of them walk together through the last days of Inmate’s life and find a deep need for each other.

WELL-VERSED curated by Nisha Patel featuring Matthew James Weigel, Kathryn 君妍 Gwun-Yeen Lennon, and Nisha Patel with special guest Ru Sunday, June 5 at 8:30 pm Lorne Cardinal Theatre in the Roxy Theatre In Well-Versed, poets explore the ways in which they embody themselves, how their lives are lived in their bodies and outside of them, and what it means to ask what a 'good' or 'well' body is, and what it isn't, in the world today. This showcase features a live music performance by Ru. Ru is a singer-songwriter out of Canada who looks for inspiration from every aspect of life to bring soulful tones to the stories of her own life and the ones of those around her. Ru’s music takes on inspiration from Indie, Neo-soul, Folk-Pop, and R&B music to give her the sound that she has today.

This showcase features a live music performance by JusJordan. JusJrdn is an Edmonton-based, hip-hop artist with ambition like no one else. His lyrics and performances are full of emotion and energy, leaving the crowds inspired and vibrating on another level.

Electrik is a showcase of the magnetic energy; that permeates all iskwewak. Through burlesque dancing, singing, and storytelling they recreate ancestral stories with vivacious curiosity and power. It explores high-intensity movements in search for the strength within myself. The artist’s objective as a choreographer and performer is to find new movement patterns that push the limits of their capabilities and discovery of corporeal expressivity. ESPARTANÆ is heavily influenced by feminist advocates (Dressing Woman by Vanessa Rosales, Women Talking by Miriam Toews, Bell Hooks, Judith Butler, among others) that invite us to question the origin of the ideas people have of themselves.

While it deals with self-harm, exhaustion, and the desperation to find meaning and purpose through it all, it is ultimately a hopeful message. CUTTING TIES choreographed and performed by Ava Countryman and Maria Morin featuring Marharyta Tsiatserskaya Cutting Ties is a short film that explores the meaning of human connection through movement. Throughout the last two years, the meaning of our relationships has been redefined. We have been forced to ask ourselves: why do we need connection? This duet displays some answers and challenges.

Helena Marina is a new and rising star in 1930s Hollywood. While working on her newest film, rumours begin to circulate that she and her co-star, the extremely famous and troublesome Caspian Irving, are having an affair. Local publications, Caspian, and her own studio fan the flames of the rumour until it threatens to overshadow her career entirely. Helena realizes that with no one coming to her defence, she must take control of the rumour, and by extension, the trajectory of her entire career, lest she spend the rest of her life playing a part forced upon her.

One Last Note is a staged reading of a one-act play centering around the suicide of the youngest child in the stereotypical suburban family. Dinner featuring a couple of guests causes a truth-seeped rift to form within the family. Told from the point of view of the deceased Mars, this show tackles some of the intentional and unintentional causes of high trans and gender non-conforming suicide/mental illness rates.

What better source to guide her than a Cosmo love quiz? Two high school physics students, who are seemingly polar opposites, are forced to work together for a group project. Taylor is a creative, outgoing, budding musician, and Quinn is a nerdy, shy, aspiring physicist. The two students teach each other about music, science, and new things about themselves. Perhaps the biggest lesson they learn is a first-hand lesson about young love.

The piece's imagery is meant to illustrate how people work together. Working together can be messy and all over the place, but in the end, the friendships you make and the journey you go on still mean something. It's about how it's worth it to try and trust others.

Armed with a soulful, velvety voice, Edmontonbased multidisciplinary artist and singer/ songwriter Kaeley Jade effortlessly blends lush poetry and hooky melodic lines to craft music that is both playful and poignant. Reminiscent of artists like Maggie Rogers and Vance Joy, the emerging Métis artist explores the beauty and complexity of human relationships in her vibrant and polished indiepop. Recorded with the Juno-nominated team at Velveteen Music, Kaeley's debut full-length album, Turpentine, is set for release in Fall 2022.
Good Information boasts a sound rooted in jazz but borrowing from head-nodding hip-hop loops, soulful neo-soul harmonies, and mathrock’s dizzying time signatures. Their unique brand of “jazz with a beat-aesthetic” shines through improvisational interplay woven over minimalist structures; one moment they’re a groove-making machine, the next, a blur of collective improvisation. The band maintains the traditional elements of small-combo jazz, allowing the music to take shape in the moment as they react to each other.

With soulful melodies and heartwrenching lyrics, his music conveys a message that is both powerful and vulnerable. Entirely unique, yet familiar.
With sounds rooted in big, infectious pop choruses and a flair for theatrics, Edmonton’s queer pop duo Homofonik turns heartbreak into bops, and joy into catchy, euphoric bubblegum pop. The duo, a collaboration between long-time friends Josh Travnik (vocals) and Daniel Belland (keyboards), draws influence from the dance-forward heartbreak pop of artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Robyn, Years & Years, and Troye Sivan.

NEXTFEST MURAL PROJECT 2022 Nextfest is excited to have Madeline LeBlanc as our 2022 Mural Artist. Madeline is a community artist that creates in the mediums of film, dress-up, and painting. She will be working on creating a new and bold work at All Sport Health & Performance located at 10612 124 St. This project will be created with mentorship by Pedro Rodriguez De Los Santos. They will be working on the mural throughout the festival. Nextfest will also be updating our social channels with her progress, so stay tuned. This project is made possible with funding from the 124th Street Business Association and Capital City Clean-Up.
