W ELCOME Nextfest marks the beginning of a long creative journey for a huge array of artists. For more than twenty years, we have fostered the growth and learning of thousands of artists who continue to practice and create on Treaty 6 land. We embody the spirit of newness and growth while respecting the deep roots planted by those who came before us. We are a platform for emerging artists, a meeting ground for community, a springboard for creative invention. Mentorship, inclusion, learning, creative risk, and vulnerability are at the core of everything we stand for. And so, we embrace the spirit of Tatawaw: a Cree phrase meaning “welcome, there is room.”

Nextfest is programmed by a group of curators who believe in creating opportunities for emerging artists to experiment, grow, and produce art without censorship. Embracing the experimental with us means you will see work that moves you in unexpected ways. It also means you might see work that includes adult content, nudity, and strong language. HEARING ASSISTANCE
The Backstage Theatre is equipped with hearing loops (T-Coil Loops) for patrons with hearing loss. These loops transmit directly to a hearing aid or cochlear implant electromagnetically, with no extra equipment. To use the system: • Ask your hearing aid provider to activate your t-coil function. • When you arrive at the theatre, switch your hearing aid to your t-coil function and adjust the volume as needed. • Those without hearing aids can also utilize a portable headset receiver. Units are available to rent for free from the box office, and are available on a first come, first serve basis.

The group was infamous for flamboyant behaviour and outrageous costumes. They were a terminally superficial partying cult of crazy fashion and petulance. Club Kids, Redux will be a celebration of the Club Kids through a late nite fashion dance party. This is a 14+ event.

In animating the inanimate device, the user is in turn animated, perpetuating motion, relationships, and explorations.

An artist from the Edmonton community is selected to create a piece on the Dance Xtreme students in grades 10-12.

CIVIL BLOOD: A Treaty Story explores the complex tensions between First Nation Tribes and the European Settlers at the end of the fur trade. Among tension and treaties two star-crossed lovers, two young people—a Blackfoot huntress, and a scholarly french boy—discover a passion for one another. Through the mounting unrest that surrounds them, they seek their own bountiful unity.

Cartel Madras is a Calgary-based hip-hop sensation shaking things up across the city, country, and industry. Hailing from South India, sisters Contra and Eboshi are rappers now being hailed by fans and eager listeners-on as they develop varying narratives for coloured women and deliver them in explosive and captivating ways. Guaranteed to bring the party, their signature sound fuses the rap stylings of the South and trap and filters it through a strong female, though not necessarily feminine, voice.
ASTRAL SWANS
Astral Swans is a human song-maker specializing in abstract narratives of lonerism, human frailty, and dread, all told with darkly comedic empathy and helpless concern. The project of Calgary experimental pop musician, Matthew Swann, Astral Swans is equally inspired by 60's folk, no wave, and 90's sludge. It is at once haunting, sincere, psychedelic, and strange.

She began writing at a very young age and started performing and recording at age 14. She was a part of the hip-hop crew Collective Conscience for a few years and has now gone solo working on two separate projects, one of which is dropping in time for this summer.
iHuman Youth Society is a non-profit that has been active in Edmonton's downtown core for over 20 years and is the home of the uniquely Edmontonian iHuman Studios. In addition to the significant body of work that it creates in its visual art, fashion, and music studios on a daily basis, the iHuman collective has presented at several local venues including The AGA, Interstellar Rodeo, The Edmonton Fringe Festival, The Works Art & Design Festival, Mile Zero Dance, and The Aviary.

performer: Spinelli Teleski Sophia is a young lady in her late teens and the 4th woman in her bloodline to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A young girl raised by two artist parents, nurtured by poetry, and mentored by the voices of beatnik musicians and the creators of the kinetic operas, she fills in the holes of memory almost lost to the winds of change in attempts to make it beautiful once more (then again, maybe the memory was never quite as magnificent and showman-like as she remembers).

We’re bridging the gap between artistic training and the real world of being an artist. Workshops will invite dedicated professional mentors and experts from the Edmonton arts communities to teach, lead, and facilitate workshops directed at artistic skill growth, the business of being an artist, and the sustainability of artistic careers. Participants will be given a common ground for discussion and the unique opportunity to learn from like-minded individuals.
Workshops are free for all emerging artists. Workshops slots can be claimed by signing up on our website at www.nextfest.com/workshopseries.
