W ELCOME Nextfest marks the beginning of a long creative journey for a huge array of artists. For more than twenty years, we have fostered the growth and learning of thousands of artists who continue to practice and create on Treaty 6 land. We embody the spirit of newness and growth while respecting the deep roots planted by those who came before us. We are a platform for emerging artists, a meeting ground for community, a springboard for creative invention. Mentorship, inclusion, learning, creative risk, and vulnerability are at the core of everything we stand for. And so, we embrace the spirit of Tatawaw: a Cree phrase meaning “welcome, there is room.”

Embracing the experimental with us means you will see work that moves you in unexpected ways. It also means you might see work that includes adult content, nudity, and strong language. So buckle up and get experimental with us.

HEARING ASSISTANCE

The Backstage Theatre is equipped with hearing loops (T-Coil Loops) for patrons with hearing loss. These loops transmit directly to a hearing aid or cochlear implant electromagnetically, with no extra equipment. To use the system: • Ask your hearing aid provider to activate your t-coil function.

• When you arrive at the theatre, switch your hearing aid to your t-coil function and adjust the volume as needed.

• Those without hearing aids can also utilize a portable headset receiver. Units are available to rent for free from the box office, and are available on a first come, first serve basis.

DISABLED ADULT TRANSIT SERVICE (DATS)

Festival-goers using DATS may be dropped off at The Roxy on Gateway Theatre (8529 103 Street) or The Backstage Theatre (10330 84 Avenue). The Roxy on Gateway Theatre will be open one hour before the first showtime on each day, and close at the start of the last show on each day. The Backstage Theatre will be open one half hour

Nextfest is located in the heart of Old Strathcona, which means parking is at a premium around our venues. You can find a map of available parking around the ‘hood here: oldstrathcona.ca/Map. But seriously, parking isn’t easy to find.

Take transit! A number of routes will get you close to our venues. Visit takeets.ca to plan your trip. The group was infamous for flamboyant behaviour and outrageous costumes. They were a terminally superficial partying cult of crazy fashion and petulance. Club Kids, Redux will be a celebration of the Club Kids through a late nite fashion dance party. This is a 14+ event.

To break loose uncoupling studies how people transition from individuals to partners, and then untangle themselves as individuals again. In animating the inanimate device, the user is in turn animated, perpetuating motion, relationships, and explorations.

Each year Good Women Dance Collective and Victoria School for the Arts partner on a new work for Nextfest. An artist from the Edmonton community is selected to create a piece on the Dance Xtreme students in grades 10-12.

CIVIL BLOOD: A Treaty Story explores the complex tensions between First Nation Tribes and the European Settlers at the end of the fur trade. Among tension and treaties two star-crossed lovers, two young people—a Blackfoot huntress, and a scholarly french boy—discover a passion for one another.

Through the mounting unrest that surrounds them, they seek their own bountiful unity.

Astral Swans is a human song-maker specializing in abstract narratives of lonerism, human frailty, and dread, all told with darkly comedic empathy and helpless concern.

The project of Calgary experimental pop musician, Matthew Swann, Astral Swans is equally inspired by 60's folk, no wave, and 90's sludge. It is at once haunting, sincere, psychedelic, and strange.

She began writing at a very young age and started performing and recording at age 14.

She was a part of the hip-hop crew Collective Conscience for a few years and has now gone solo working on two separate projects, one of which is dropping in time for this summer.

iHuman Youth Society is a non-profit that has been active in Edmonton's downtown core for over 20 years and is the home of the uniquely Edmontonian iHuman Studios. performer: Spinelli Teleski Sophia is a young lady in her late teens and the 4th woman in her bloodline to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A young girl raised by two artist parents, nurtured by poetry, and mentored by the voices of beatnik musicians and the creators of the kinetic operas, she fills in the holes of memory almost lost to the winds of change in attempts to make it beautiful once more (then again, maybe the memory was never quite as magnificent and showman-like as she remembers).

We’re bridging the gap between artistic training and the real world of being an artist.

Workshops will invite dedicated professional mentors and experts from the Edmonton arts communities to teach, lead, and facilitate workshops directed at artistic skill growth, the business of being an artist, and the sustainability of artistic careers.

Participants will be given a common ground for discussion and the unique opportunity to learn from like-minded individuals.

Workshops are free for all emerging artists. Workshops slots can be claimed by signing up on our website at www.nextfest.com/workshopseries. Sign up soon - all slots are first come, first served basis, and space is limited.
