We talked about his important and challenging job as the city’s top cop. He described his work as a profound responsibility dealing with “serious matters that impact the lives of all New Yorkers.”

Interestingly, that comment segued right to the very source of his inspiration, his mother, Helen.

Commissioner O’Neill’s face lit up talking about his mom and growing up in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Proud of his Irish heritage, he credited his mother with inspiring him to live up to the ideals of what a good cop should aspire to, it’s all about values.

He summed it up with his mother’s words, “We can change the world into what we want it to be, life is much, much more than being about oneself.”

he bond between a mother and her daughter can be truly special, and for designer Amsale Aberra and her daughter singer Rachel Brown, that connection has defined and nurtured two inspiring careers.

With her lines of bridal gowns and bridesmaids’ dresses now available in over twenty countries around the world, Amsale has become an international leader in bridal fashion. Born in Ethiopia, Aberra recognized a void in the market as she shopped for her own wedding dress in 1985, and set out to redefine the industry, offering a modern take on bridal design.

For Brown, music has always been a passion, prompting a then 10-year-old Brown to write “I want to be a singer” in her journal. Her dreams have certainly come true, with Brown performing for everyone from Beyoncé to Robert De Niro and even taking the stage with Wyclef Jean. Backed by her band, Brown’s soulful and rhythmic sound has earned the singer fans around the world, with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” streamed over two million times.

And while mother and daughter have chosen different fields, their shared commitments to creativity and each other have nurtured two parallel creative journeys built upon the foundation of the family.

Moving back to New York after college, New York was the perfect place to be. There was no shortage of open mics or music venues to get my feet wet.

Amsale Aberra (AA): The people of New York inspire me. I’m always mindful of people I see on the street. What they wear and what they do. Whether I’m in a café or rushing to an appointment, anyone who has a strong sense of style, they catch my eye.

I don’t think there’s anywhere else in the world that I would have had access to such incredible diversity in building my band.

–Rachel

Rachel Brown (RB): There is so much going on at all times, that you can’t help but be moved by the energy. Everyone seems to be up to something, and I find that collective drive to be so inspiring. I also don’t think there’s anywhere else in the world that I would have had access to such incredible diversity in building my band. The musicians I play with span the globe from Madagascar to Haiti, Mali to Brazil.

Growing up, when did you each discover your calling? How did growing up in New York make that a unique process for you, Rachel?

AA: Although I made many of my own clothes as a child, I didn’t dream of being a fashion designer. It was after graduating with a degree in political science that I came to know that I really wanted to be a fashion designer.

RB: I always secretly wanted to be a singer, but it wasn’t until after I finished high school that I actually took the first steps to turn that dream into a reality by buying a guitar and discovering songwriting. From that moment on, I was hooked. Moving back to New York after college, New York was the perfect place to be.

How did you nurture Rachel’s talent, Amsale?

AA: From a young age I could see that Rachel was creative by trying different things—painting, sculpture, photography, silk screening, knitting, even re-designing clothing. Although it might have seemed that she was unfocused, I believed it was OK for her to keep experimenting by trying different thing, so I encouraged her.

How have you supported each other’s creative processes?

AA: Well I don’t know much about music, so the best way I can support that is to stay out of the way. I just give her encouragement.

RB: My mom has never doubted me and always given me tremendous support. I’m pretty sure she’s my biggest fan! As far as her work—I’ve never missed a single fashion show (I always block the dates out at least a year in advance so I can’t be booked for shows!) and there hasn’t been a single design she’s made that I haven’t been amazed by. She’s a genius.

Have you inspired each other?

AA: Rachel’s uncompromising commitment to her work, and her willingness to immerse herself in all the creative elements of her brand, not just songwriting and performing, but conceiving and editing her videos, art directing her album covers, and actively programming the events she performs inspires me.

RB: Growing up with a mother who pursued a creative passion and turned it into a thriving business is incredibly inspiring. Because of her example, I never had to think twice about pursuing my dreams—it’s just what you do.

What’s been the most rewarding part of being a designer and musician in this city?

AA: I love the process of creating-developing a vision and watching it come to life.

RB: There is music everywhere. Any night of the week you can pop into a venue, see an amazing band, and get inspired—both by the musicians on stage and by the audience who came to be entertained. While it can get overwhelming to know that there is so much out there, it’s a great feeling to know that you are part of that world.

What’s next for each of you?

AA: I keep myself pretty busy designing five collections. Just getting that done each season is enough!

RB: I haven’t released new material since The Band—EP in 2015, so right now I’m jumping into my songbook and writing as much as I can so that I can put out some new music! •

KIT Kit is an innovative, made in America, clothing start-up changing the scope of the fashion industry. Merin Guthrie launched Kit in 2015 as a solution to the ill-fitting dresses she wore as a businesswoman in Washington D.C., where she worked for nonprofit organizations with educated women who “put up with limited dress options.”

Merin’s inspiration was a vintage custom black dress from her grandmother, which lasted nearly half a century. The craftsmanship, handmade custom tailoring, and long-lasting wearability are what she strives to recreate for today’s consumer.

Upon moving to Houston Texas, Merin who had no fashion background explored custom designs for friends and family.

Before launching Kit, Merin having an organizational and business knowledge conducted lots of informal surveying of geographically diverse women of varying ages, and found that 20 percent of

women prefer to shop in stores, 10 percent online and 70 percent were willing to do either because time was a factor for in-store shopping. This determined Merin’s digital platform.

She is committed to making clothes that “women can feel confident in, fit and wear well.”

Following a brief fit quiz, all garments are made to order and ready for shipment within two weeks. This is possible because design and manufacturing occur all in one place which helps monitor quality control.

Each Kit garment is then handcrafted to fit their wearer by a dressmaker trained by the Alliance for Multicultural Community Services, a nonprofit that helps recently resettled refugees get on their feet, in Houston, TX. FRANCO ERCOLE BESPOKE Custom tailoring is an old world tradition that is currently a fashion fit must for everyday professionals and special occasions.

Franco Petrungaro, master tailor and business owner of Franco Ercole Bespoke Custom Tailors on Madison Avenue explains how this “lost art” is making a comeback within the fashion industry among clients that want a “lifestyle fit” without compromising superior quality. Franco follows a family tradition started by his father Ercole who apprenticed and learned the trade in Calabria, Southern Italy. ederico Calce is an expert in beauty with a passion for style and technique. Highly acclaimed for his unique and insightful approach to hair styling, Federico has elevated the definition of a mega-modern and contemporary hairdresser.

Federico moved to New York City from his native Milan, Italy in the early 80’s, where he worked at his family’s salon chain. His talents were immediately recognized, and was appointed Artistic Director of the salon at Bergdorf Goodman. Five years later he launched his namesake salon, Federico and has since created some of the most glamorous and memorable looks to sweep Fashion Week’s runways, Hollywood’s red carpet and top fashion magazines alike. He has coiffed the head of many models for Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, Valentino, and Armani fashion shows.

We had the chance to meet with Federico in his salon to find out more about this favorite hairstylist to the stars.

What surprises you the most about what you’ve managed to achieve in your career?

Being able to regularly address not only the needs of my clients but also my employees by providing them with the most up-todate innovations in technology, color, and techniques to create new styles and do healthy and beautiful hair. Throughout my years, I have always strived to be at the forefront of innovation in hair care through new trends and the latest techniques. I have always used the most organic non-toxic hair colors. Most recently I am part of the team that created a new hair system for women with thinning hair. I firmly believe that a women’s hair is her crown.

What’s the most important quality you look for in someone joining your team?

Mostly one has to be a team-player willing to work with others to share and to learn from each other. We always strive to be at the forefront of innovation in hair care through new trends and the latest techniques. We cater to the couture looks as well to complete transformations.

We welcome every client into our salons by creating a relaxing atmosphere in which they can explore any look they wish. We help introverts bloom into a more confident self, and we help the confident show off who they truly are. This is the result of teamwork.

Who are your celebrity beauty icons—past or present?

Ann Hathaway, Jane Fonda, Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren, Michelle Williams to name a few. Scarlet Johannsen has shown she is not afraid of change and I admire her for that. Women who are willing to change and show just how confident they are no matter the style are amazing.

Tell us your number one hair care tip.

Cutting hair to its natural flow. Get a great haircut. You can have amazing color, but without an easy to do haircut, you’ll never be able to flaunt it like when you walked out of the salon. The difference between a good haircut and a great haircut may seem like nothing at first, but the more you play with it, and the way the shape remains as it grows is the real test of a great haircut.

Do you have any favorite trends for Spring 2017?

The biggest trends I am seeing is women with curly hair. So many of my clients that used to do keratin or other straighteners are stopping it and embracing their curls. I spent a lot of time showing them how to style their curls, creating the right cutting techniques for their particular style, and they receive so many compliments that they are finally embracing it. The minimalist style of New York is making its way into hair as well. We will see much less crazy fashion colors like pinks, green, purple and blue and many more natural colors. The natural goldish red color is very in fashion.

Not firetruck red, or copper, but that very suave and delicate inbetween that looks very natural.

Which hairstyles do you tend to do most often?

Beach waves are probably done the most often. They are extremely versatile: As a loose updo that looks like it is defying gravity, it can give that sultry effortless look. Depending on the tightness and direction of the wave, you can customize it to bring forward the face, or push back and away from certain features. Women love it, and so do I. What is the biggest challenge when styling celebrity hair?

Celebrity assistants can make or break you. More often than not they are pickier than the celebrity. Usually, we get along very well, but there have been awkward moments. In the end, we both want the same thing. For the celebrity to look like a star! A cut above the rest, a style icon for everyday people.

Tell us something you’ve learned on your journey.

I learned never to give up. My motto is ‘if you want you can.’ There have been some hard times when I was first establishing myself in New York, but I am the type of person who finds a positive in the most difficult situation.

Having achieved your dream, what’s the best advice you can give someone who also has a passion for hairstyling?

Stay open to evolution and love what you do! Don’t be afraid. You will fail more times than you can count. The important thing is that you assess why and how you failed. I promise if you do that, you won’t make the same mistake again. Learn to embrace your failings and to evolve!

Sounds too good to be true, right? We get it; curly hair is prone to dandelion-like puffiness. Fortunately, keeping your hair in tip-top shape is possible. Meet Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge, two “mixed chicks” who created a product line because there was a need.

IRELAND’S WILD ATLANTIC WAY

ere’s something for your bucket list: Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, which does not refer to the ethos of the people of Ireland—although you’ll find lots of mirth and merriment along the way. What we’re talking about here is a series of roads that hug the West Coast of Ireland. It’s the longest, signposted coastal drive in the world—1,500 miles long, which may seem strange since the Republic of Ireland is only 300 miles from top to bottom. But if you travel the entire length of the Wild Atlantic Way and explore every bay, inlet and nook and cranny along the way, you will have traveled 1,500 miles.

You can drive the entire route in one fell swoop or break it up into mini-travel chunks. However you decide to explore this gorgeous part of the world, Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way should be placed on your must-do list. By traveling the entire route, you will have gained insight into the history, geography, geology and the very welcoming people of Ireland.

SAVOR EACH MOMENT Begin your trip at the very northern tip of the Republic at Malin Head in County Donegal, the northernmost point in Ireland. At this stage, you will also notice that driving is done on the left side of the road. There are also tour providers who will do the driving for you while you sit back and enjoy the scenery. You’ll notice that signage is both in English and Irish. Among the highest sea cliffs in Europe—even more dramatic than the famed Cliffs of Moher in County Clare—are Sliabh Liag (or Slieve League Cliffs). These under-discovered cliffs alone are well worth the trip as are many of the other sights along the way.

Just to the south is County Sligo where you may first encounter some of the best seafood (and seaweed) you’ll ever savor. Call ahead for a reservation at Eithne’s by the Sea where your memorable meal will be prepared straight from the boat or farm. Pick up a copy of Galway author and Chef Michael O’Meara’s award-winning Sea Gastronomy: Fish and Shellfish of the North Atlantic cookbook, which offers all you’ll ever want to know about the bounty from the sea in this area. Seaweed and its healthful benefits can also be sampled along the way. Try lunch at the Beach Bar in Aughris (where you can also sip a little whiskey by a traditional peat-burning fireplace) and then relax in a therapeutic seaweed bath at Voya Spa in Strandhill.

HIDDEN TREASURES The country’s Wild Atlantic Way will take you to many places off-the-beaten track. Discover and explore four national parks Glenveagh, County Donegal; Ballycroy, County Mayo; The Burren, County Clare; and Killarney in County Kerry. Also along or near the route are the picture postcard towns of Knock and Cong. Lodging possibilities along the way are as varied as the sights. From campgrounds and small seaside B&Bs to truly memorable places where you can live like aristocracy including Lough Eske Castle, Donegal; Ashford Castle, County Mayo; Dromoland Castle, County Clare; and Adare Manor, County Limerick, which are just a few miles to the east of the Wild Atlantic Way. A trip to the Aran Islands is also a must-see if you want to get off the beaten track. These three islands at the mouth of Galway Bay, County Clare, can be reached by ferry or a five-minute flight from the mainland and appear as if parts of the Cliffs of Moher broke off and floated out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Lodging ranges from camping, hostels, B&Bs and historic hotels such as Kilmurvey House, a guesthouse housed in a restored 18th-century stone mansion on the largest of the Aran Islands—Inishmore (Inis Mór).

While there, spend an evening at Joe Watty’s Bar which will provide you with one of the most memorable times of your life with its great food, drink and live music.

Midway on route is Galway, Ireland’s fourth most populated urban area (about 80,000 population). It will be European Capital of Culture in 2020, alongside Rijeka, Croatia.

Dating back to its origins in the 11th century, today Galway is a thriving city that justifiably attracts lots of visitors. Christopher Columbus stopped by on one of his voyages in 1477 and is believed to have prayed at St. Nicholas Collegiate Church, which continues as the largest medieval parish church in Ireland in continuous use as a place of worship. And, of course, there is Galway’s famed Oyster Festival where each year revelers consume oysters and a particular elixir called Guinness. Merriment ensues at this traditional celebration. Stay at Galway’s grand dame Hotel Meyrick or at the G Hotel and Spa which was created by noted hat and fascinator designer Philip Tracey.

Meanwhile, back to geology—in County Kerry, just a few miles off the Wild Atlantic Way, is Crag Cave, which is well worth the detour. Here visitors are taken on a 30-minute guided tour to view the stalagmites and stalactites that have been forming for the last million years. Open all year; it also features an information center and well-stocked gift shop in case you want to give your credit card a workout.

SPECTACULAR SIGHTS Back on the Wild Atlantic Way and above ground, you’ve got about 750 miles to go, heading south from Galway.

Perhaps one of the highlights of your drive is the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most visited tourist attractions.

These spectacular sea cliffs have an elevation of around 720 feet and stretch for five miles along the dramatic coastline.

There is also an on-site visitor’s center, restaurant and gift shop.

It’s off to Dingle we go and even more spectacular panoramic coastal vistas. This charming town is one of Ireland’s most inviting places to spend a night (or how about two?). Stroll the streets, poke into the shops and cruise out to some of the islands offshore and all of your worries and cares will melt away.

The last stop on the Wild Atlantic Way is Kinsdale, on Ireland’s southern coast, and from there it’s just a short way up to the famed Ring of Kerry and the metropolis of Cork.

ew hotels open almost every week of the year. Some stay. Some go. And some—through a combination of ambiance, service and history—become legends. Let’s visit some of these legendary places that continue to amaze travelers!

LA MAMOUNIA, MARRAKESH The grandest hotel in Marrakesh, La Mamounia (lamamounia.net), has amazed guests for years—and with good reason: richly decorated columns support brilliant mosaic tiled roofs, open courtyards frame shallow aquamarine pools and palm-filled exotic gardens surround the sunset-red Medina walls. The look is a blast from the ruling dynasties of the past. Le Bar Churchill is the same smoky, exotic hangout it always was. Le Marocain is on the top of our fine restaurants list. Tucked among flowers and fountains, guests can dine on seafood tagine and sip mint tea on the candlelit terrace. Choose a riad (traditional Moroccan house) nestled in the gardens with its own private pool or in the main mansion, choose a king-size bed in a small-but-gorgeous room adorned in rich velvets.

TAJ FULAKNUMA PALACE, INDIA Think of a fairytale residence belonging to royalty and you’ll get the Taj Fulaknuma Palace (taj.tajhotels. com). Once a 19th- century guesthouse for royalty, it has taken years to convert this 60-room palace into one of India’s top hotels. Made of Italian marble, the rooms are furnished with antiques and French tapestries. In fact, the Dining Hall has the longest dining table in the world, seating 101 (now that’s a dinner party!). It may be very old and very bling, but it’s got modern touches too, like the stunning spa, where you can indulge in an Indian head massage or Ayurvedic treatment overlooking the terraced gardens. Later, you can tuck into the best curry you’ll ever taste in one of two restaurants. THE BILTMORE ESTATE, NORTH CAROLINA America’s largest home rises high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Opened in 1895, The Biltmore Estate (biltmore.com) is modeled after a 16th-century French chateau and has 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 baths and 65 fireplaces. This Asheville property was originally the home of George Vanderbilt—grandson of Cornelius— who indulged his passions for art, literature and horticulture. Following his wedding to Edith Stuyvesant Dresser and their honeymoon to Paris, the newlyweds returned to The Biltmore in 1898 to make it their permanent home. Although never intended to be a hotel, friends stayed for months and were treated like hotel guests. Plaques with their names were placed on bedroom doors, and personal servants (a precursor to modern-day butlers) were assigned to attend them. Today, the estate and gardens are open to the public for guided tours. However, you can live like a Vanderbilt and stay at the Inn on Biltmore in one of the exquisite guestrooms or suites, or choose The Cottage, once the cozy residence of the former estate’s gardener. Blazing fireplaces, butler service, afternoon tea, fine dining and spa services are just some of the amenities. Romantic extras, such as horse-drawn carriages, can also be easily arranged.

MONMOUTH HISTORIC INN, MISSISSIPPI The Natchez Trace Parkway Trail, which winds along the Mississippi River, is covered in history. For centuries, it was used as a trade route.

Today, it’s a scenic trail that originates in the town of Natchez—the oldest settlement on the Mississippi—which brims with antebellum mansions.

Imagine you’re characters from Gone With the Wind comfortably settled at Monmouth Historic Inn (monmouthhistoricinn.com), an intimate 30-room haven dating from 1818. Stroll among the flowers gardens and oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and then sip a mint julep in the parlor before retiring to a cozy canopied bed.

THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN, HONOLULU When the “Pink Palace of the Pacific” first opened in 1927, there was only one other hotel along the beachfront. Today, the Waikiki Beach is lined with high-rises, but it’s the historic Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort (royalhawaiian.com) that is still favored by Hawaii aficionados.

During the 19th century, King Kamehameha I used this land as his royal playground. The glamorous rich and famous flocked to the hotel during the 1930s and it remained until WWII, when it was leased to the U.S. Navy. Tourist mania returned in the 1950s and the Royal Hawaiian has been popular ever since. Historical walking tours offer insight into the hotel’s rich past, and its weekly luau is one of the best in the islands.

Other amenities include the plush garden-style spa, where bamboo treatments are especially popular.

HOTEL BEL-AIR, LOS ANGELES Once a hotspot for top celebrities including Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, the luxurious Hotel Bel-Air (dorchestercollection.com) continues to be a trend-setting hotel. The façade’s signature color, known as “Bel-Air Pink” and its Spanish Colonial architecture make this hideaway a distinctive choice; all guest rooms and suites inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood. With views of the canyon, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, grand pianos and spacious decks, the 12-acre property provides a peaceful nest for the La Prairie Spa with seven treatment rooms including a couple’s massage room and a mosaic steam room. ou realize the moment you arrive in Bermuda that this place is special, an improbable Eden set in a dazzlingly blue, surprisingly temperate patch of the Atlantic just 600 miles from North Carolina. Rich in beauty and British charm, this 21-square-mile isle offers travelers easy access, plus a unique blend of alluring landscapes (pink beaches and pastel cottages) and underwater thrills (the wreck diving is phenomenal). Read on and discover what this entire isle has on tap.

BEACHES ARE PINK Not hot pink or neon pink or even candy-cane pink, but a soft pink that’s a lot more noticeable on cloudy days or when the sand is wet. The great effect is caused by the shells of tiny marine creatures called foraminifera, which flourish on the offshore reef and then wash ashore after they die. Horseshoe Bay is Bermuda’s most popular pink strand, but there are often so many tourists there you can barely tell sand from the sunburns! Opt for Long Bay beach instead.

IT ALL BEGAN IN INDIA The history of Bermuda shorts is steeped in the British military. Overcome by the Indian heat, British sailors stationed there simply snipped off the bottom of their uniform trousers. Being stiff-upper-lip sorts, they kept the woolen knee socks. The revolutionary style later spread to the British garrison in Bermuda and over the years evolved into the pleated, tapered, pastel shorts we know today. Locals sport their Bermuda shorts yearround (rain, wind or shine) and wouldn’t be caught dead in anything other than a traditional navy blue blazer.

INCREDIBLE UNDERGROUND SCENERY Beneath Bermuda is a chain of 150 limestone caves discovered in 1907 by a group of kids looking for a lost cricket ball. Visitors can explore Crystal Caves on pontoons that float on a vast underground lake framed by thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby Fantasy Cave can also be explored with a guide. Those who would rather do it themselves can poke around the cave at Blue Hole Park or snorkel the half-submerged sea caves at Shark Hole.

GOOD LUCK Bermuda is famed for its moongates: limestone portholes that decorate local gardens and are said to bestow happiness especially on all who pass through one—especially newlyweds. A local captain built the first moongate in 1860, based on one he had seen in a Chinese garden. The oldest example is the ivy-covered moongate in Hamilton’s Par-laVille Park, but the gate overlooking the beach at Tobacco Bay is by far the most picturesque.

AFTERNOON TEA There’s nothing quite like taking a break and enjoying a traditional English afternoon tea. If you’re feeling a wee bit British, head to Crown & Anchor Bar, Restaurant, and Terrace in the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (fairmont.com). Enjoy homemade scones, Devonshire clotted cream, finger sandwiches and pastries served on beautiful silver trays alongside steaming pots of tea.

FINDING NEMO IS A NO-BRAINER Bermuda is surrounded by the northernmost coral reef in the Atlantic Ocean and home to many of the marine species you find in Caribbean waters: turquoise parrot fish, butterfly fish, blue angels and silver barracuda are just the beginning. Snorkeling is superb right off the beach at places like Long Bay and Church Cove. Also, many outfitters offer scuba diving excursions to vertical walls and dozens of shipwrecks in the surrounding Bermudan waters.

A HISTORY LESSON WHITE ROOFS ARE EVERYWHERE They are a highly practiced architectural feature made from thick limestone tiles that are layered to catch rainwater, which is then drained off into cisterns. The bright white sealant makes the roof waterproof and helps purify the runoff—the primary source of fresh water for nearly every Bermudian.

A trip to Bermuda is not complete without a visit to the Royal Naval Dockyard, which has become Bermuda’s leading tourist attraction—a sort of theme park (without the roller coaster) that includes museums, pubs, sports, and shops. Housed inside the massive British fort, the Bermuda Maritime Museum is about a lot more than old ships and sailors. You can rent snorkels and sea kayaks at the snorkel park to explore the nearby reef.

There is also a glassworks and ceramics factory and an indoor craft market where you can buy island keepsakes such as cedar wood jewelry boxes, black rum cakes, and many other hand-crafted objects.

n 1777, a British expedition sailing up the Hudson River fired upon the private home of Leonard Smith located in the small village of Milton, NY. Fortunately, the attempt to burn it down failed. s someone who grew up in Westchester, I must confess that I don’t associate White Plains or the county itself with the term “resort.” So when we drove up to the 114-acre sprawling Doral Arrowwood Resort in Rye Brook (near White Plains), I felt like I’d fallen into an alternative reality. I had no idea that the option for a weekend getaway at a real resort—a short half hour train ride or a 30-minute drive from Manhattan—even existed.

The Doral Resort is a bit of a sleeper. Primarily known in the hospitality industry as a meetings venue, it’s also a real life hedonistic haven—a short drive from the scenic village of Sleepy Hollow in Washington Irving country. I checked into my suite with views over the award-winning Robert von Hagge nine-hole golf course and prepared for dinner at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, Atrium. Presided over by Austrian chef, Michael Schmutzer, (a charmer with an Arnold-like “I’ll be back” accent), Atrium’s food is clean, locally sourced and surprisingly sophisticated. I had an excellent pork chop so tender it was falling off the bone and veggies so crisp; they actually snapped when you bit into them. Wines are also extensive, and the restaurant has won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for five years in a row. After dinner, a full-bodied glass of cabernet by the Pub’s open fireplace capped off the evening, and I slid between the sheets warmed and drowsy for an early evening.

SOOTHE THE BODY & SOUL In the morning I had a swim in the huge indoor-outdoor heated pool and a no-nonsense, expert, deep tissue massage in the spa/fitness center before heading out to explore nearby Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. I was frankly surprised at the quality of the massage. The spa is small, so I thought I’d just get a cursory rubdown, but my masseuse was one of the best I’d ever had. I dressed for my day of exploration feeling warmed, relaxed and excited to explore Washington Irving’s legendary town where Ichabod Crane met the headless horseman.

Sleepy Hollow with its new TV following (personally, I liked the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton film version best) can lure you from the resort for a full day of exploring. I wandered through the village’s historic cemetery, had tea in town, and shopped in vintage stores (and bought way too much!) till the moon rose over the Hudson, and it was time to drive back through the resort’s palatial gates.

Back at Doral, I toured some of the property’s legendarily well-appointed common facilities.

Airy and mid-century-modern in feel, you get the impression that Don Draper would be right at home holding forth in a meeting here, cocktail in hand.

Sunday Jazz Brunch was my farewell send off.

It’s a local favorite and was chock-a-block with chatty guests both from the resort and from local Westchester towns who know Atrium as one of the best restaurants in the country.

On the short drive back to Manhattan, I slipped back through that alternative reality to cityspeed but felt like I’d been away a long time. A little like author Washington Irving’s tale of Rip Van Winkle.

IF YOU GO Doral Arrowwood Resort is a short drive from NYC, but you can also take the Metro North train to the Tarrytown Station and short cab/Uber ride to the resort from there.

Sleepy Hollow is a main local attraction, but you can also visit places like Washington Irving’s Sunnyside overlooking the Hudson River. Your guide—dressed in period costume—will explain how the author designed this home and its grounds himself. Another not-to-be missed estate is Kykuit, the 100year old home of John D. Rockefeller where you can tour the house and also see gardens containing Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s collection of 20th-century sculpture. Artists represented include Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, and David Smith, among many others. There are also underground art galleries with Governor Rockefeller’s collection of Picasso tapestries, and the Coach Barn, with vintage collections of classic automobiles and horse-drawn carriages.

The rental market is continuing to soften as landlords continue to offer more and more concessions like one-to-three months free rent and also paying the broker’s fee. If you are currently seeking an apartment, I would advise you not to pay a brokers’ fee because enough no-fee apartments are being offered. One metric that I can see changing this trend is the graduating college students who plan to move here. The question is, “are there enough graduates moving to NYC to support the current softening market?” We shall see.

The sales market is more attractive: The $1-3 million dollar luxury market is still going strong as there is a lot of value on the market in this range especially on the Lower East Side. The ultra-luxury market hasn’t made up its mind yet. One week you read signed contracts are down, and the next week you read that signed contracts are up.

I would recommend fellow luxury brokers’ like myself to read The Global Property Handbook, produced by Warburg Realty, Barnes International, and Wealth-X. It is the first report to put the luxury

global real estate market into perspective—detailing the real estate habits of ultra-high net worth individuals and the primary factors that influence their purchasing decisions. In addition to learning what your potential clients will be looking for in a residence, they also have produced the first ever “Alpha Cities Index,” which is an index that lists the top 50 cities for luxury purchases based on practical, emotional, and financial factors of this group. Heidi Barnes best sums up this market by saying, “Global financial uncertainties combined with the economic, political, and social conflicts that weigh on our society remind us as if it were needed, that real estate and especially luxury property remains a safe haven.

Wealthy clients seek out luxury property because it is one of the best avenues for maintaining financial value.”

One other metric to take into account is interest rates. Interest rates have been trending higher since hitting all-time lows in July 2016, and exploded following the presidential election. This trend does not show signs of reversing. Also impressive are the curved recessed design details on the face of the risers of the stairs which beautifully match the recessed pulls in the kitchen. There is also a private internal elevator servicing all three floors with access from the common hallway as well.

The master suite encompasses what a luxury penthouse should. An oversized bedroom with three exposures (and protected views), floor-to-ceiling windows, one of the three wood burning fireplaces, and overlooking the brise soleil. ow often do we hear that famous phrase “Only in New York?” Recently I had a NY moment that was truly authentic and inspiring. It began on the southeast corner of 86th Street and Second Avenue and centered around a visit to our brand new Second Avenue subway station there.

I entered the elevator to go down along with a familiar cross section of New Yorkers—mothers with strollers, delivery people with packages, handicapped individuals, and others—who got in just like I did to experience a working subway elevator.

Despite all the hype about the new subway, I was still impressed by the brightness and design. Even more thrilling, I was welcomed by two giant-sized Chuck Close mosaics before I had even entered the turnstyle.

I studied them up close. I had already seen two from the sidewalk subway outpost, but this vantage point offered an entirely different experience. While varied in style of mosaic execution, there is no mistaking them for anything other than a powerful display of this extraordinary artist’s work.

IT’S ALL IN THE TOUCH Then I had an OMG moment—I could touch them. None of the security guards told me to step back, and unlike at a museum, I was in no jeopardy of being escorted out for handling a piece of art done by a master artist. So, I ran my hand over them. I examined the texture, coloration, lines, finish, grout. I stepped back and forth. I realized they were mine to experience for free! I had not even gone through a turnstyle so I had not even paid to enjoy them. I could go 24/7, 365 days a year and visit this underground art gallery.

Amazingly, the entire station is punctuated with nine Chuck Close mosaics. I watched how they acted as people magnets. Clearly I wasn’t alone in enjoying the freedom to examine them. People took selfies, talked to strangers about them, and posed their children in front of them.

The station had become enriching, not just functional. Then my “Only in New York” moment got even better. Chuck Close arrived in person to see the finished installation of his work. Over the last few years this generous man and I have become friends as we bonded over philanthropy. Chuck is known for his active involvement in bringing the arts to everyone, not just collectors. He has been an inspiration for kids with limited access to the arts, an encourager to young artists and a great supporter of museums and educational programs worldwide.

AN ARTIST FOR THE PEOPLE I delighted in watching Chuck observe how passersby slowed down and engaged with the art. Station workers including the architects, construction engineers and cleaning crews who had never met him flocked to thank him and get photos with him and the works. Everyone stopped when Chuck examined his iconic self–portrait in mosaic format for the first time. Some took pictures from afar but others came over to ask him questions.

Chuck was always patient answering any questions they asked.

As he posed for picture after picture, I teared up. Things I prize the most—accessible art, a generous and world famous artist mingling with everyday New Yorkers, tourists and MTA workers—was a fantastic “Only in New York” experience.

When I began Joan Hornig Jewelry with the commitment to donate 100 percent of my profit to the charity of the purchaser’s choice, I assumed jewelry purchases would inspire many customers to identify arts organizations to receive donations.

Yet the arts have remained the least popular area to receive my customers’ support. Education, health, the environment and animal rights are regularly selected, and of course, these are all worthy causes. But hopefully this brilliant move by the MTA and Governor Cuomo to reach out to great artists like Chuck Close, Vik Muniz, Sara Sze and Jean Shin to enhance this infrastructure achievement with an underground museum will bring to the forefront New York’s unparalleled public art and the value in supporting it.

After all, the arts help us express our values, build bridges between cultures and unite us regardless of ethnicity, religion or age. Studies have shown that students with art education have improved academic performance and creativity sought by employers. Arts have demonstrated healing and palliative effects which can reduce the length of hospital stays, pain levels and medication needs. Communities with larger arts programs are strengthened by lowering poverty rates and increasing civic engagement. And, to further make the case for robust arts support, consider the arts as an industry creating jobs, generating tax revenues, and helping local merchants.

CREATE YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE The tradition of public arts in NYC is one for which we should all be proud. Consider our early public monuments, WPA projects, the City Walls non-profit founded in 1966 and the Public Art Fund (publicartfund.org) which is currently responsible for organizing many highly visible artists’ commissions, projects, installations and exhibitions. Add the Percent for Art Law, requiring that one percent of the budget of City-funded construction projects be spent on art for City facilities. Top this off with Bloomberg Philanthropic gifts, individual donations and nonprofit organizations dedicated to the arts. We enjoy an art love fest every day in New York!

It’s up to us to open our eyes and those of our children. With over 180 museums, an online Free Tours By Foot (freetoursbyfoot.com) calendar of free or almost free museums and cultural opportunities to explore, we can all afford “Only in New York” experiences. NYC offers so much art for all to experience for so little.

So, why not create an “Only in New York “experience for a child who has never been to a museum or contact a non-profit that brings art to youths and get personally involved? Google your personal arts interest and start exploring by taking the beautiful new Second Avenue subway with its underground art. We can all afford it. AtmosAir’s systems are currently installed in some of New York’s most iconic addresses. I recently met with Steve to find out about his commitment to bring products and technologies to market that improve the quality of our environments.

How did AtmosAir get started?

AtmosAir began as an air testing company that would analyze and write 30-page reports on customer’s current air quality. It then became apparent that the clients didn’t just want the report, but also a solution. After many years of looking at the best technologies around the world, AtmosAir found the solution and brought it here from Europe. AtmosAir has grown ever since. Today health and wellness/sustainability initiatives are growing exponentially, and most Fortune 500 companies and schools are focusing on how they can give their clients pristine air quality.

What sets AtmosAir apart?

AtmosAir is the only technology to make the invisible—visible. It is also the only company to patent the bipolar ionization air cleaning method.

AtmosAir is a hybrid technology—it works on reducing air particles/scary gaseous elements such as formaldehyde that research says can cause cancer. It also has significant HVAC cost savings benefits. Where do you currently have AtmosAir systems in New York?

Do you find more people are using air purification systems in a commercial or residential setting?

We get calls every day from individuals who have asthma and allergies or potentially have an odor issue in their home. At the same time, we’re working on major commercial construction projects every day. The balance is probably 80/20 right now of commercial work to residential work.

What do you see as a leading trend/challenge in sustainable energy in the Tristate area?

Awareness and culture. As with all movements, some companies, and people believe in the sustainability movement. Others seem to be a little slower to understand the benefits and the cost savings of implementing sustainable energy practices. With time, more people will hear and read the research and data around implementing energy efficiency initiatives, providing clean air, clean water, and the best possible environments for employees, guests, etc.

What opportunity is there for AtmosAir on a global scale?

Air quality is a global issue and a growing issue due to the number of people on our planet and the emissions we’re creating. In 1900 we had 1.6 billion people on the globe. By 2050 we are expected to be a world of 9.7 billion people. There are many cars on the roads, industrial pollution is growing, and emission rates are growing which all correlate to poor outdoor air quality and poor indoor

air quality. AtmosAir is working actively to raise awareness and eradicate these issues at the same time.

How do you feel AtmosAir is contributing to decreasing our carbon footprint?

When a building can spend less on fans, air handler sizes, chiller plants, heating plants, etc., the carbon production as well as energy consumption is drastically reduced. AtmosAir is trying to implement this throughout New York schools and offices because HVAC utility costs are on average 45 percent of service expenditures. If we can decrease that consumption by 10 to 25 percent, there are significant savings in all sustainability facets.

How will AtmosAir change the Real Estate industry in New York?

The fact is we aren’t in the mountains. We’re 8.5 million people living in a land area a bit over 300 square miles. We’re spending 90 percent of our lives indoors. Maybe 95 percent in some cases. We need our indoor air to be pristine so that we can live longer, healthier lives. If we can continue to grow the conversation about indoor air quality while providing a measurably cleaner indoor air quality (IAQ), we’re serving our purpose. Relatively speaking, not many buildings today are implementing enhanced air purification like an AtmosAir system. We want to be known and feel we are known for bringing proactive air cleaning to the New York market.

Has AtmosAir been installed in any notable homes?

Most notably, AtmosAir was installed in the home of retired American business executive, author, and chemical engineer Jack Welch. Welch was chairman and CEO of General Electric between 1981 and 2001. There have also been some very exciting installations recently in the homes of actors and philanthropists.

What progress/impact on indoor air quality do you see AtmosAir having over the next ten Years?

We hope to grow the conversation and be a market and thought leader. We feel like we were ten years out in front of a market that many people see growing in a large way. The importance of indoor air quality will be eternally significant. It is our job to continue to educate and stress the importance.

What are the benefits of cleaner air in the workplace?

Companies understand the value of keeping their workforce healthy and more productive. Gensler and JLL state that it’s worth over $1,500 to $2,000 per employee in less absenteeism with Cleaner Air. New York City has a poor reputation for toxic air quality, pollution, and high levels of particulate. ocated on the south end of Tribeca bordering FiDi, 100 Barclay is being touted as a new era of luxury. This building was completed in 1927 and was originally the headquarters for The New York Telephone Company; it was landmarked in 1999. This was one of the first skyscrapers designed by famed architect Ralph Walker and is the world’s first skyscraper built in the American Art Deco style. There are 158 residences available on the top 22 floors (floors 11 to 33), which starts at 170 feet above street level. Surprisingly, offerings range from studios up to 5 bedrooms. On the tower floors (floors 20 to 31) there are only four residences per floor.

OVERSIZED RESIDENCES Landmarked Art Deco architectural details can be seen throughout the lobby. The first thing you’ll notice in this building is the ceiling art in the lobby. There are some individual murals that have a theme culminating to the center. The theme is communication, and each work represents a mode of communication during a particular era which culminates with the telephone at the center since this was originally New York Telephone Company’s headquarters. The residences are as grand as this ceiling panorama. The building is pre-war, so the proportions of the residences are large. The oversized 10-foot ceilings make these spaces even more magnificent. Double hung 7-foot tall windows throughout the areas bring in a lot of light, and the views from the tower levels are stupendous. Take in the views of the Hudson River to the midtown skyline views and more.

The kitchen is beautiful with an open layout and all top notch appliances including Sub-Zero, a Wolf gas range with a hood that vents out, and a Miele MasterChef oven. A design detail worth noting is the Dornbracht pot filler, something every kitchen should have. Very warm tones of integrated cabinetry outline the kitchen area with ribbed glass paned cabinetry filling in. The Miele oven and pot fillers are center attractions and the Calacutta Gold marble island countertop and backsplash complete the design.

The master baths are brilliant as well. Floor-to-ceiling honed marble abounds everywhere including the wet room with a beautiful niche and steam shower, on the double vanity countertops and encasing a deep soaking tub. There are Lagos Blue limestone contrast borders for a very nice effect. The bath boasts all custom vanities and medicine cabinets with Waterworks chrome fixtures throughout. The bathroom design is quite regal and an example of the grandeur of this project.

UNIQUE AMENITIES The amenities in this building are also outstanding with over 40,000 square feet of amenities. Amenities include two swimming pools, an 18th-floor lounge with a media room, wine tasting room with private wine storage, children’s playroom designed with Playgarden, four terraces, and a fitness center and spa.

Another unique amenity is two soundproof music practice rooms. I am always impressed when designers make space for important things like music appreciation. Parents will also thank the designers that their children can practice their pieces in a dedicated space with no disturbances from outside distractions (and vice versa).

A historic building with landmarked status, pre-war large open layouts with great designs, some of the best fixtures and appliances, plenty of walk-in closets, and a host of amenities.

he Cast Iron House situated at 67 Franklin Street can be found on the northeastern border of Tribeca right on Broadway.

It is a boutique offering of 13 three-to-five bedroom condos all of which are duplexes. Built in 1881 and landmarked, Knightsbridge Properties Corp. has completely restored the façade to its splendor. Over 4000 pieces were shipped to a foundry in Alabama to be recast and restored to their original design complete with unique detail. Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect who won the 2014 Pritzker prize has done a fantastic job designing these residences and successfully incorporating the design aspect of the interplay of light and air in the Cast Iron House Residences. He custom designed many of the details within the spaces including all of the cabinet pulls and door handles.

LIVING LARGE All of the units have double height ceilings in the living room ranging from 17-to-25 feet. With double six foot wide windows the amount of light penetrating the common areas is unparalleled. The top windows are motorized. Across from the living room is the kitchen. The kitchen is a beautiful example of Shigeru’s modern minimalism. It is an open kitchen with all integrated cabinets of Shigeru Bans’ custom white matte lacquer finish and includes a full length kitchen island of Calcatta Lincoln slab marble and countertops. A Kohler white double kitchen sink has the smart divide feature with two separate bowls. Behind all of this classic minimalist white custom cabinetry are the finest modern integrated Gaggenau appliances except for the U-Line under counter wine refrigerator. Dornbracht faucet and InSinkErator garbage disposal are also features of the kitchen. The flow of these apartments is seamless with milled cabinets throughout the space. What helps with the flow is Shigeru’s use of some curved walls within the spaces and on the staircases.

Custom Shigeru Ban designed Corian vanities with integrated sinks are in the powder room, secondary, and master baths. These vanities have a beautiful curve in their design that stands out. Matching curve features are on the Corian encased tubs Shigeru has nicknamed “race track tubs” because they resemble the oval character of a racetrack. Another curve design element is in the wet room. The rain shower head has an outdoor shower fixture design. Flowing up from the fixtures it has a nice oval curve. Other features of the master bath include floor to ceiling Bianco Dolomiti marble walls and floor with a custom frameless glass enclosed wet room with Dornbracht polished chrome fixtures throughout. There is a full-length mirror with recessed medicine cabinets.

The full-length mirror is the length of the entire width of the bathroom. The bathroom is oversized, and this mirror opens up space even more. The bathroom boasts Spoon XL freestanding tubs by Agape as well.

All of the residences are very private. Elevators open directly to apartments. The proportions of all rooms are oversized. The master bedroom is huge and has a walk-in closet/dressing room. This is an excellent example of the “new design” prevalent in the development frenzy NYC is experiencing. The amount of light, the design and flow of these units, and the 21st-century technology including a Lutron lighting system throughout showcase the thoughtfulness of design that Shigeru Ban has brought to the Cast Iron House. There are 8000 square feet of amenities including bike storage, resident’s lounge, children’s playroom, and the fitness center. Additional amenities include a hydrotherapy spa, sauna and steam room, a treatment room, and a dance/yoga studio. Welcome to 38 Prince Street directly across from Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Five levels plus a basement encompassing seven bedrooms, seven full baths, and three half baths all connected by a sweeping staircase and one of the city’s largest residential elevators.

The townhouse combines excellent clean, minimalist architecture (late Federal period) with some ornate details (Greek revival) like the North and South facing Oculus windows on the top floor. The top floor also has original exposed beams which are another defining feature of this house. Time Equities Inc., Hamlin Ventures, and Marvel Architects should be very proud of what they have accomplished.

SIMPLE YET ELEGANT The two most defining spaces of this masterpiece are the English basement housing the common areas and the third-floor master level. The English basement houses the kitchen and dining area and leads out to the two-tiered backyard. The kitchen has been designed

by Smallbone, and their custom cabinets are made of walnut. Simple yet elegant horizontal slots with Waterworks nickel features create a warm and homey feel. There is even a walk-in pantry. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the stainless steel La Cornue Chateau 150 Range and vented hood. It is an excellent choice for 38 Prince because like the design of this residence, this range is both sleek and elegant. The selection of stainless steel complements the warm walnut cabinets and the single slab Colorado Lincoln honed marble countertops and backsplash tie this tasteful yet modern kitchen together. The kitchen is large, and the dining area next to it is also quite large. There is a fireplace in the dining area but what sets this family area apart is that it leads straight to the backyard. A 1,600 square foot two-tiered backyard. The floor to ceiling glass doors open completely to expose the yard for an indoor/ outdoor living. This is a classic design that provides for a private family time in the middle of the bustling city.

WINNING DESIGN The master floor is another defining feature of this residence. An oversized master bedroom, a study, and a true master bath with dressing room and powder room comprise this floor. The master bath boasts two exposures, a bidet, a Waterworks free-standing sculptural bathtub, and a wet room. The wet room has a marble seating bench, a great niche factor, and a steam shower. There is a multitude of counter space with two vanities both made of walnut and aged bronze with free-standing vanities and under mounted Duravit sinks. The entire bathroom is encased in honed Calacatta marble with bronze inlays which create the elegant feel; a huge mirror custom designed by Nebil Gokcebay (of Marvel Architects) opens up space even more. This is a very original master bath in layout and scope. Worthy to be one of The Classicists AD100 honorees in Architectural Digest.

Three more levels consist of a parlor floor, secondary bedroom floor, and a top floor with a den and two additional bedrooms. The parlor floor has a grand entertaining room with a fireplace and wet bar and another dining room in the rear. The secondary bedroom floor has three bedrooms and a playroom and three full baths. The top floor has two more bedrooms and a family room with another fireplace.

All of the secondary bathrooms are designed elegantly with marble mosaic floors, honed marble tile walls, custom vanities with 1.5inch thick marble countertops and under mounted Duravit sinks. STATE OF THE MARKET

e recently met with Samantha DeBianchi, founder of DeBianchi Real Estate, a top Florida real estate firm. She is featured regularly on Fox News and CNBC and has appeared on the popular show “Million Dollar Listing Miami” which airs on Bravo TV. If that weren’t enough, Sam also writes the popular weekly column “Real Estate Advice” for South Florida’s Sun Sentinel. With over $150 million in sales under her belt and a growing team of 13 agents on staff, she took the time to share her views on the real estate market in Miami and New York.

How is the Miami market for 2017?

The South Florida market is looking good for 2017. Now more than ever, we see a significant increase in foreign investment in our market, and with the strong U.S. dollar, I am optimistic that the luxury residential market will thrive this year. There’s been much hype that the appointment of our new president would affect the market, but that hasn’t been the case thus far. Furthermore, the election of a new president did not have a significantly negative impact on Latin American currencies, and with South Florida’s strong appeal to buyers in those countries, I think that will be key to the region’s upswing.

There is a synergy between Miami and New York City. Do you see any trends?

Miami has changed in significant ways over recent years, which has attracted New York City’s wealthiest real estate buyers. Miami is a global city, and with its new luxury developments, New York City’s affluent, business moguls and creative types are flocking south in droves. For New York City buyers, who in their home state are burdened with high taxes and a high cost of living, Miami is an excellent option to purchase a second residence. Luxurious new developments, with New York City-style amenities—including concierges, fitness centers and spas, and much more—are becoming the norm in Miami, and that alone is a big appeal for New Yorkers.

Do you have a lot of New York clients in Miami (and vice versa)?

A lot—about 50 percent of my clients. South Florida’s Miami-Dade County is commonly referred to as “the sixth borough,” and that’s not by accident. The markets overlap, and I feel through word of mouth, more and more New York City-based clients are coming to me. I’m in New York City about once a month to meet with my clients, speak on TV about business, the market and, of course, visit friends!

New York City is experiencing a development boom with some of the most beautiful buildings in development. I read Miami is also experiencing this. What do you think is one of the main differences between New York City and Miami markets?

Miami has also seen a boom in new luxury developments. The properties are similar in their features, amenities, and style, but the big difference comes in what local buyers are willing to pay in each market for the same type of property. Also, unlike New York City, Florida has no state income tax, which is a great reason buyers take up the second residency there.

What are the similarities?

The U.S. housing market has been surging in recent years, with home prices soaring more than 50 percent on average since their lowest in early 2012. Miami and New York City are two top markets that are seeing this bubble the most. Also, as stated luxury is king in both markets. Quite a few New York City developers have moved into the Miami real estate market. And Miami, like New York City, is a large market with ultra-high condo sales prices.

How do you see this Miami building boom going forward?

I think with the rise in foreign buyers, and with an increasing number of domestic buyers seeking out South Florida for a second residence, the building boom will continue. Miami is continuing to mature and become culturally relevant, with its global cuisine, museums and international buyers, and as a result, residential developers are achieving high prices at new condominiums.

With your vast experience, what advice would you give a potential buyer/seller?

My best piece of advice for a potential buyer would be: Don’t wait. When buyers say they will wait until spring or summer to buy, I would advise any buyer to start their search early, to face less competition and have just as many homes for sale to consider. For sellers, price to sell. Home prices nationwide are expected to rise 3 percent this year compared to last year, so I would recommend pricing a home adequately for the market.

How is the luxury Miami market doing? In New York City, the $1-3 million luxury market is going strong, but the ultra-luxury market ($6 million and above) has stalled somewhat.

In Miami, we have more luxury inventory than we’ve ever had in the city. With the surplus in inventory, sales of ultra-luxury properties are currently on the slow side, but I do expect that to turn around in 2017, given the price adjustments that are being made by luxury sellers.

New York City is currently experiencing a buyers’ market. Has Miami seen this change in the market?

With the surplus of inventory, we see price adjustments by sellers to

account for the explosive growth Miami has recently experienced.

The increased inventory is helping bring sellers to the point of acceptance that their prices must change. That said, it’s currently a buyer’s market.

What advice would you give to a potential buyer?

I think it’s important to truly interview real estate agents before you dive into working with someone. So many people out there have a real estate agent, and very few (agents) actually know what they’re doing. Aside from them being knowledgeable (they should are aware of their inventory and be experienced in transacting), it’s also important to make sure you click; you should be able to communicate well. The agent should understand you, and you should trust them and their abilities.

When you’re a buyer, your agent should be your advisor, and with real estate being one of the riskiest investments out there, it’s imperative to choose wisely.

How do you think the 2017 real estate market is going to shape up this year?

For buyers looking to enter the market, 2017 will be a great year. With the political and economic uncertainty shifting with the new president, buyers will be able to get into the market aggressively and get great deals (not steals) on beautiful property. Many people fear that we could be on the verge of another recession, with the likelihood that the president will cut government spending dramatically in his first year and the stock market is in a state of uncertainty. With that said, another year of low-interest rates could be upon us. As a result, home buying should remain active in 2017.

Aside from conducting business in New York City, what are your favorite things to do here?

When I’m in New York City, I love visiting new restaurants and some old favorites, including my top pick Bond St. It’s a sushi restaurant in NoHo, and aside from having delicious sushi, their dishes are plated to look like works of art. his article proposes the idea that you and I take a personal inner journey whose purpose will be to find out how we could be good friends. My hope is that you would allow me to be your companion in this journey that we may both learn about the true meaning of friendship. As we get deeper into the concept of friendship, we will learn who we are and how to be good friends. The hope is to accept and respond to a person who wants to be our friend. And to reveal a friendly attitude that the other person may find attractive and respond favorably. The experience can bring us joy and inner contentment. In taking a deep look into our non-physical self, our soul, where the real self-abides, we may discover the need and value of true friendship.

YOUR INNER VOICE Life is life, and it can be great, and it can be cherished every moment as we faithfully follow and listen to that inner voice, the whisper of our soul. Trusting that inner voice would lead us through this journey to potential new opportunities as we experience the joy of friendship. To know our inner self enables one to be a friend, and that enriches our life with motivation, values, visions, and goals. Not what we have been told by others, but what we have discovered for ourselves. Knowing our inner self well requires a high level of introspection and self-awareness. At the same time, the process of discovery never ends—it’s a life-long journey, a daily unfolding. As an ancient Greek axiom suggests, “Get deeper into yourself and learn from yourself what you must do and how to be.” We need to listen to our inner self, our soul which is a particle of divinity within us. Our self-image is crucial—how we perceive, how we respect and love our self will determine our interaction with other people and whether we can be friendly and feel the joy offered by someone else who wishes to be our friend. You may still get certain moments in your life where you face some difficult problem and even when you see the next logical step to the resolution; you still hesitate to take action. Think of a time when your true self suggests you should do something, yet you are aware that you cannot do anything. Personal reasons or pressures imposed by the environment can prevent you from taking action.

An example could be when a serious disagreement starts and slowly culminates with your parents or your spouse, a sibling or a dear friend. Although, deep inside you feel and you know that you are wrong, you find yourself unable to get out of this argument. Your thoughts could be “if I give in now, this would show I’m a weak person and I don’t like that feeling.”

This example applies when there is a disagreement with a friend. If you feel the same way, if I give in now, this would show I’m a weak person, you would be distancing yourself from any friend. In such a situation we need to be aware that we rediscover our character. Then the question: How many personal character features do we know and accept? What do we think of our true self, our self-growth and of our personal development? Efforts to be a friend or to have a friend are entirely dependent on how well we know our self and how we feel about our personality. Judging our self excessively is damaging to our self-image, and we may have a hard time being a friend or accepting a real friend in our life.

BELIEVE! Acceptance will help you to modify aspects of your behavior because of the demands of reality. In accepting yourselves you may feel a gentle urge to change, not because there is something wrong with you, but because your soul knows that there is more for you to live for, more for you to enjoy. Sometimes what you consciously wish to change may be your behavior or your attitude. Although for some time they served you well in your past, today they serve no purpose, they may even hurt you.

Demons in full force will fog your mind and tell you that you are weak and worthless and that death is your destiny. You may wrestle with these demons of self-criticism and negative injunctions. But you don’t need to join them, for their intention is to deprive you from the truth and keep you from being happy.

Your time has come to forgive yourselves for things about which you feel guilty, inadequate, or responsible and be of good cheer for being unconditionally forgiven and accepted by God. Accept and receive yourselves in your entirety without exception and rejoice. Take charge of your life, and I shall be your pilot in your new journey. Gradually, return to your inner self, your soul and realize that everything in this world has a purpose. As you explore your inner resources, you will discover that you have an abundance of positive qualities than you can possibly imagine. If you feel even for a moment that your personal life has no purpose, this could be your moment to create one. Nobody else will do it for you. This is your human prerogative and obligation. Go for it, and I will enable you in the best way possible to find the path that you should follow.

Be humble in our aspirations and realistic in your expectations of yourselves and others. We may not be aware what is really good for you. To combat negative influences and have total acceptance of self is an ongoing process of persistence and perseverance. Patiently approach life, seeking out in your environment people and situations that may be nurturing, and do things that you love doing. Warm your heart with love and reach out to give love to others. You may learn from them something of benefit. As you interact with other people you will rediscover your own capacity of love. Take a few minutes each day and start loving those who are close to you - your spouse, your parents, your family, your siblings, your children, your friends or people that you work with. HEALTHY EATING FOR TEENS

t seems it would be easy for teens to eat healthy today with endless choices available in supermarkets and restaurants. The always changing information and research data in the news and in magazines along with so many food choices can make selecting healthy options confusing for teens. Add to that portion distortion and what would appear to be simple becomes confusing for teens and parents alike.

Looking for some simple guidelines from a Nutritionist with her own teen? Follow along for some easy tips.

CHOOSE WHOLE GRAINS Does your teen want more energy and a way to maintain a healthy weight? Go for whole grains instead of processed and refined ones.

Many loaves of bread, cereals, portions of pasta and our favorite snack foods can be highly processed. They not only have grains that have been broken down, but also added sugars and preservatives that the body doesn’t need. When choosing these foods, have your teen look at the nutrition facts label. A guideline would be to search for products with at least 3 grams of dietary fiber per serving (4-5 would be even better). Next, look at the ingredient list. Try to find ones with the most recognizable ingredients.

ORANGE, PURPLE & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN You’ve likely heard it before: eat the rainbow. Why is this important?

Each of the colors provides teens with different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Eat ‘em if they’re fresh or frozen. Eat ‘em if they’re cooked or raw. Most importantly, eat a variety of colors every day. Below you will find a guide to the benefits each color provides.

• Red: Brain health • Orange: Vision health • Orange/Yellow (citrus): Skin Health • Green: Energy • Blue/Purple: Brain and blood health DAIRY We’ve known the benefits of dairy for protein and calcium in relation to bone health for years. Unfortunately, many brands add extra sugar and filler ingredients for flavor. What are the best dairy products for teens? Look for unprocessed ones with no sugar added such as: plain yogurt (for more protein try Greek or Skyr yogurt), cottage cheese, and milk. Looking for an easy breakfast or snack for your teen? Mix Greek yogurt with fresh berries, nuts, or whole grain cereal. For a dash of sweetness try stirring in a drop or two of

organic honey. If your teen can’t have dairy, alternatives can be fine, but look at the ingredient list to find the least processed ones.

PROTEIN POWER Protein is an important building block for your teen’s bones, skin, hair, and muscles. The type of protein they choose is important, as many choices are high in saturated fat. Leaner options include: eggs, seafood, chicken breast, turkey breast, London broil, pork tenderloin, beans, lentils, and non-GMO edamame.

HEALTHY FATS Many teens wonder if it’s acceptable to eat fats. The answer is yes!

But here’s the big but: Watch your portions and make sure you choose healthy ones. Here are some good options: nuts, avocado, hummus, guacamole, or olive oil.

SNACK FOODS Who doesn’t love sweets and chips? It’s hard to tell anyone to cut out snacks altogether. I provide the guideline of 150 to 250 calories from snack food per day. This number can vary depending on height, weight, activity level, and age but it’s a good guideline.

DINING OUT SMART Dining out should be an enjoyable treat, but teens frequently eat at restaurants and bring in “take out” food. Have your teen look for simply prepared foods. Some favorites are: grilled chicken Parmesan with veggies, 2 sushi rolls with miso soup and salad, or a baked potato topped with chili.

HYDRATE! When your teen is dehydrated, you may find they have less energy and eat more. In addition, hydrating helps our body digest food and allows fiber to do its job. Water, seltzer, and unsweetened decaffeinated teas are optimal choices. •

very few months three friends, Tracy Gaslow, Hollie Levy, and Denise Kleinman, used to fly off to the Ashram, the popular fitness retreat in the California mountains, to hike, do yoga, eat organic food and detoxify. While they loved their time off—they have three husbands and seven kids among them, so stress levels are often high—it was exhausting to haul across the country just to detox. It was also expensive.

WEST COMES EAST But rather than complain (and who would feel sympathy, really?), they decided to bring a little bit of the West Coast back East. Last year, the three women opened Groundsea Fitness, a wellness retreat in the Berkshires, a mere three hours from Manhattan.

Using the byproducts of other vegetables prepared during the week, we crafted house-made flatbread crackers made entirely of vegetables and gluten-free flour. Garnished with local tomatoes, providing a nice acidic variant against the heartiness of the white bean, along with black sesame and local olive oil—this is a hearty, sustaining and nutritionally purposeful meal.

The average daily calories hover around 1500, which means you’ll most likely lose weight, even if you don’t do all the exercises. But don’t worry: No one will beat you over the head with a stick of incense if you decide to chill out rather than work out. It’s understandable why you might opt to kick back on the lawn, or by the pool: The retreat takes place in a gorgeous, rambling private home, smack in the middle of the woods. It’s an ideal setting for getting in shape, or meditating, catching up on old reading. And if you think there aren’t other benefits, guess again. “We came back from the trips so clearheaded and energized it makes us better parents and spouses,” says Gaslow.

Quality and results, if wonderful, were a happy dividend—and if they didn’t quite measure up to the ka-ching, who cared? Cachet and warm hors d’oeuvres made up the difference.

Looking at “not so long ago” in the rearview mirror, however, I realize just how much the day spa landscape has morphed into an equal opportunity panorama. And what I’ve discovered is, while many exclusive spas are right on target, sometimes it’s the on-trend, lesser-known spas that hit the right note.

HIBBA COLUMBUS CIRCLE A case in point is Hibba Columbus Circle, the third Hibba Salon to open in Manhattan. With a solid reputation for eyebrow transformation and waxing, Hibba recently added Express “Classic Facials” to the menu to accommodate a growing clientele seeking a refreshed, healthy look when time is at a premium.

Having sampled a Hibba facial, I urge you to shelve the idea of zip-zip “Express,” as the experience was neither rushed nor indifferent. It was, in fact, a meticulous, multi-layered facial with impressive results for weather warriors like myself—a total blessing during these months of erratic New York forecasts.

After assessing my skin type and condition, Usha—one of Hibba’s facial experts—cleansed and massaged my face. She then left me for a few minutes while a thin vapor of warm steam prepared my nose and chin for delicate extractions. But for me, the highlight of the facial came with the application of a thick, lush facial mask targeting my dry skin, followed by tranquility for several minutes while it soaked in. By the time Usha returned to remove the mask, I was relaxed and poised to enjoy the end game—especially the rejuvenating results.

A FEW WORDS WITH HIBBA KAPIL It started 15 years ago, while she was still in her teens: Hibba’s obsession with eyebrows—threading, shaping, tracking trends, knowing what flatters one person might be a disaster on another. Indeed, the first thing you read when you visit the Hibba Beauty website is her philosophy: “I believe that beauty comes from inside and out, and brows should be groomed to create a natural shape that best enhances your features, letting your inner beauty shine.”

Petite, pragmatic and passionate about introducing new services, Hibba began offering micro-blading four years ago. “With full, dark eyebrows in right now, micro-blading is an option for people who don’t want to have to use a pencil every day,” says Hibba, going on to describe the concept as a semi-permanent tattoo created with a tiny, fine blade. Touch-ups are generally needed every six-to-seven months.

And word is spreading. Notes Hibba: “During Fashion Week it got so busy that editors who couldn’t make it into the salon called in requesting deskside microblading.” Clearly, confident brows are the new black!

TRENDING: GUA SHA FACIALS To explore the history, fine points and impact of Gua Sha—an ancient healing method involving various kinds and shapes of scraping stones (or boards) would require way too much space and far more finesse than I have at my disposal. So let me just say that Gua Sha facials (a relatively new spinoff of Gua Sha body scraping) are being billed as “Eastern Facelifts” and “a rejuvenating replacement for acupuncture.” Using a gentle flicking motion on age spots, for example, breaks up melatonin both on top and underneath the skin with impressive results.

With less than a handful of qualified Gua Sha estheticians available to Manhattanites, Great Jones’ entry into the field is welcome. A formidable expert’s unique single agate stone to target fine lines, dark circles, puffy eyes, age spots and facial contouring, these facials are said to reduce toxins while stimulating the lymph glands. GREAT JONES SPA When Wall Street workaholics want to unwind without the uptown trek, the buzz has it they head to Great Jones Spa. Welcome to NoHo’s three-and-a-half story wellspring of massage, facials and assorted other treatments complimented by an expansive Water Lounge boasting a three-story glass and steel waterfall, sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold plunge and nicely clustered pockets of lounge chairs.

As for the spa’s overall public space design, think contemporary industrial elements, serious stonework and some of the building’s original 1875 bricks coming together to shape a unique ambience. Brick also defines the treatment rooms, nicely offsetting the sliding opaque glass-and-dark-wood doors. It was here I experienced Great Jones’ 90-minute Signature Massage, a service incorporating three indulgent elements: aromatherapy, hot towels and hot stones. I was talked through this wonderfully decadent treatment by my therapist, Christy Vannoy, manager of the spa’s massage department. She disclosed that deep tissue and Swedish massages are most in demand, no doubt because 30 to 35 percent of the spa’s regulars are men who gravitate to the familiar. Still, guys, try the Signature Massage—and ladies, if it isn’t on your agenda, make it a priority. I do a lot of spa-ing, and this one was a five-star eye-opener.

The popularity of Great Jones Spa—clients, flow in and out at a comfortable pace during the week while weekends tend to have a party vibe as guests alternate treatments and socialization—is not left to chance. From the management and estheticians to the front desk and the individuals who keep the locker rooms pristine and well stocked with robes, towels, sandals and toiletries, the staff is laid back and accommodating. Overall rating: outstanding.

ARE YOU AGING WELL?

eople often wonder how at the age of 66 I manage to have the physical health and appearance of someone at least twenty years younger. It is not something I attribute to luck or simply good genes. Our habits, food intake, the way we exercise, handle stress, and our professional life can cause our genes to be turned on or stay dormant. The science of epigenetics explains this and can be the result of good health or potentially illness depending on the choices we make.

Turning on and off gene expression in some ways is a state of controlled aging. You’re not just rolling the dice, nor should you leave your health in someone else’s hands with acceptance. Let’s first examine the work that needs to be done regarding mental health and attitude when it comes to aging.

YOUR ATTITUDE A positive attitude is undoubtedly a reason why people look better and tend to live longer. When you are in a good mental state, you are more conscious about the decisions you make. You are less likely to look for food or alcohol for comfort. You will sleep better at night because you are not upset or worried. Caring for your body will help strengthen your immune system, energy levels, and physical capabilities.

Think about the flipside when you’re not in a great mental place and can’t seem to maintain balance. Often we see those struggling with obesity from not watching their diet or lacking the motivation to exercise. They are not sleeping well because the mind is clogged with negative thoughts. Additionally smoking, drinking or abusing drugs (even prescription) are being used to deal with life’s curveballs.

Walking around unhappy also leads to looking older because of frowning, thinning of hair from stress and many more unwanted aesthetic issues. The other factors that lead to aging correlate to what is happening on a cellular level.

GLYCATION AND AGE’S When glucose sugar binds to and inhibits DNA proteins and lipids, this process creates inflammation and forms Advanced Glycation End products. These (AGE’s) leave us at risk for diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular problems, and premature aging. The Western diet is full of AGE’s ranging from foods high in sugar to anything that is barbecued, charred or browned. Dark soft drinks like Coca Cola (even if artificially sweetened or other sugar alternatives) are problematic for this reason.

OXIDATIVE STRESS It’s everywhere: Radiation, cigarette smoke, air toxins, sun damage, processed foods and unclean water can lead to oxidation and free radical damage. Luckily some foods and supplements help to reduce these dangerous forms of oxygen. By adding more foods high in sulfur, you will be able to better detoxify. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage are a great addition to your diet. Additionally, supplements such as N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), B-12, Selenium as well as anti-oxidants like vitamins C and E should be considered.

TELOMERES Telomeres are a part of our cells that affect how our cells age. They protect our DNA, make it possible for cells to divide, and can even determine if we will get diseases like cancer. Ideally, we want them to be longer to defend us. Over time, telomeres decrease as we age and make it worse with stress, poor diet, smoking and lack of exercise.

When you think about aging, it’s much more than just a reflection of your physical appearance (such as fine lines or gray hair).

Making the right lifestyle changes will dictate the quality of your days and your potential to have a very long lifespan. •

FRESH & FANTASTIC Executive Chef Rodrigo Nogueira, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute has created a menu that is fresh, bright, and vibrant for the season. In the front room, bar snacks include soft and creamy taleggio cheese drizzled with honey and topped with walnuts, crispy crab beignet accompanied by Japanese mayonnaise and bonito flakes, creamy textured salt cod croquettes with piquant harissa dip, or vegetarian risotto fritters with tomato jam, or delicious and restorative bone marrow with grilled scallions.

In the main dining room, an ideal meal may begin with tastes from the raw bar with Littleneck clams, shrimp cocktail, Jonah crab claw by the piece or by the platter and small plates like cured Arctic char, Meyer lemon puree and radishes; and perfectly seared scallops with smoked tomato. The large plates are just as spectacular: Braised Pork Belly with faro, Fresno jam and a fried egg, the Roasted Scallops with water chestnut, bell pepper and coconut broth, and the tender Roasted Fillet with short rib, bone marrow and sun chokes. And of course there is the popular ‘Roo Burger—a kangaroo meat patty topped with housemade tomato jam (a recipe from owner and Aussie expat Tim Harris’ grandmother), arugula, pickled onions and thick-cut triple fried chips with harissa aioli. CREATIVE LIBATIONS The current cocktail list takes inspiration from Southeast Asia with flavors such as kaffir lime, Thai chili, lychee, and lemongrass.

The creative cocktails were developed by owner Tim Harris in collaboration with renowned mixologist Greg Seider (Summit Bar, Le Bernardin, The Mercer Kitchen). Each cocktail is named for an iconic Aussie rock song and has an Instagram linked music video to go with it. For instance, “Before too Long” combines Zu Bison Grass Vodka with lychee, lime and ginger beer over shaved ice. Tim has also curated an expansive selection of Australian wines to pair with the seasonal fare.

2 dashes orange bitters (Reagan’s, Fee Brothers or Angostura) 2 dashes smoked cinnamon tincture (recipe below) 1/4 oz. agave syrup (50/50 light agave nectar and water) 2 oz. High West Double Rye Smoked Cinnamon Tincture Place 1 Tbsp. of smoked cinnamon powder and 1 cinnamon stick in a mason jar. Pour in 1 cup of high proof neutral spirit such as a high proof vodka (100 plus proof). Agitate and sit for 24-48 hours for best results. The higher the proof the quicker the process. Strain through a fine strainer into a dasher bottle (can use vinegar dashers or a used bitter bottle, or buy specialty bottles online at barsupplies.com) Will last up to a year if stored air tight.

Directions Add all ingredients to a mixing glass. Top with ice and stir approximately 50 times. Strain over one giant ice cube in a double-old fashioned glass and garnish with a large piece of orange peel (trying not to get the sour white part).

A TASTE OF IRELAND

By Patricia Canole oday, dining in Ireland is an epicurean delight. Food is farm-to-table fresh with seafood topping the menu. Not to be overlooked, naturally raised lamb is used in many recipes including the always satisfying Irish Stew. But it’s the potato that reigns supreme and the all-important part any Irish meal. Colcannon is a favorite!

Irish hospitality is unquestionably warm and inviting. This custom goes back to ancient times when it was declared you must share with those who knock at your door. If not, you were shamed. This custom is still alive and very often when visiting friends or family slices of warmed homemade soda bread and a dollop of creamy butter are sure to be within reach.

Not to be overlooked are the thirst-quenchers. Centuries ago, the Irish enjoyed home brewed varieties. A favorite was Mead, a honey wine that was both potent and delicious. Ales were also on the list. In the late 17th-century, tea was introduced in Ireland and became the beverage of choice. Today, the Irish consume more tea per capita than any other nation. Whiskey was also introduced and dates back to when the Normans invaded Ireland. They could not pronounce the Gaelic Uisce Beatha (Water of Life); instead, they used the word fuisce which became whiskey.

Needless to say, beer is still a favorite beverage for one and all. You’ll find ales, stouts, and a multitude of microbrews. Irish breweries are located mostly in Dublin (Northern Ireland has its good share, too), with the most popular being Guinness, brewed at St. James Gate, Dublin. It is often said, “The closer you get to Dublin the better the Guinness.” There’s probably much truth to this!

Here, some of our Irish favorites. And, as they say in the land of a thousand welcomes—Sláinte!

IRISH SODA BREAD Ingredients 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup Irish whiskey 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 Tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1-1/3 cups buttermilk 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Preparation Soak raisins and whiskey overnight.

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and in a large bowl; mix well. Stir in whiskey-soaked raisins mixture, blending well. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk; add to flour mixture, stirring well. Stir in butter, mixing well. Spoon batter into a greased 2-quart casserole.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until golden brown. Slice and serve with butter or marmalade. Serves: 8 to 10.

COLCANNON IRISH STEW Recipe and photo courtesy Idaho Potato Commission Ingredients 2 pounds Idaho Potatoes (4 medium potatoes) peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick 3 cups onions, peeled, cut in half and thinly sliced 2 cups carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch lengths 12 sprigs fresh thyme, or 1 1/2 teaspoons dry thyme Salt to taste Fresh ground black pepper to taste 2 pounds boneless blade steaks (6 lamb shoulder chops can be substituted) 12 ounces prepared beef broth 3 tablespoons flour Fresh chopped parsley

Recipe and photo courtesy Irish Food Board Ingredients 2 lbs. potatoes, cooked and mashed 1/2 lb. kale, drained and finely chopped (you may also use cabbage) 1/2 cup milk or to desired consistency 1/4 cup butter Salt and black pepper to taste Preparation Mix potatoes, kale (or cabbage) together. Heat milk then add butter; blend into the potato mixture until smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serves 4.

Preparation Preheat the oven to 350° F. On the bottom of a 3-quart casserole dish or heavy pot with a lid, spread half the potatoes, onions and carrots. Season heavily with salt and pepper. Top with 6 sprigs of fresh thyme or 3/4 teaspoon of dry thyme. Place the blade steaks or chops on top of the vegetables. Top the meat with the remaining potatoes, onions, and carrots. Season well with more salt and pepper. Top with remaining dry thyme.

Cover the stew with the beef broth and enough cold water to barely cover the top layer of vegetables in the pot. Place the lid on the pot and cook for 2 1/2 hours until the meat and potatoes are fork tender.

To serve, remove the meat, potatoes, and vegetables from the pot. Discard the thyme stalks if using fresh thyme.

In a small bowl, blend 3 tablespoons of flour with enough water to make a smooth paste. With a wire whisk, blend the flour mixture into the hot broth. Stir well to dissolve the mixture. Place the pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Cook the sauce for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

To serve, place the potatoes, vegetables and a piece of meat on plates or in large bowls. Top with sauce and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serves 6.

IRISH COFFEE Ingredients 8 oz. strong hot coffee 2 tsp. sugar 1 oz. Irish whiskey Whipped cream Preparation Start with hot, strong, ground coffee. Heat the glasses with hot water poured into them. Discard the water; pour coffee onto a spoon without touching the spoon to the glass to prevent the glass from cracking. Add sugar and stir well to dissolve. Add whiskey and stir again to mix fully.

GHOST IN A SHELL Not Yet Rated Scarlet Johansson earned her action movie credentials as the Black Widow, in two Captain America and two Avenger blockbusters in addition to another hit Iron Man 2. She adds to her list of fearless characters the role of Major—a cyborg/human hybrid—who commands a counter-terrorist task force responsible for preventing a criminally dangerous hacker from destroying Hanka Robotics advancements in cyber technology. The sci-fi crime thriller is based on a popular Japanese manga (comic book). The casting of a Caucasian woman in a role associated with a Japanese man was criticized by many Asian Americans and other devoted fans of both the manga version and a 1995 Japanese anime (animated film) directed by Masamune Shirow. Responding to the criticism, Ms. Johansson released this response: “Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel I was playing a character that was offensive. Also having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is a rare opportunity. I feel the enormous pressure of that controversy, the weight of such a big property on my shoulders.” The issue, of course, has brought Ghost In The Shell additional media and public attention and that combined with a visually spectacular commercial shown during the Super Bowl could result in even higher than expected grosses at the box office.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Rated PG A live adaptation of Disney’s 1991 animated blockbuster with Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) as the Beast will be shown in 3D, IMAX, and Real D 3D. Director Bill Condon who brought Chicago and Dreamgirls to the big screen assembled a Grade A cast: Audra McDonald, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson and Luke Evans as the pompous, egotistical suitor Gaston. “Be Our Guest” and “Something There,” are among the memorable numbers written by Alan Menken, Tim Rice, and the late Howard Ashman. The score and title song were Oscar winners. The movie grossed close to 425 million worldwide. Will the 2017 version top that number? I predict it will.

FAMILY MOVIES

LOGAN Rated R The tenth film in the X-Men series is Hugh Jackman’s last. Devoted Wolverine fans will see a somewhat different character than the one he played for 17 years. The year is 2029. The X-Men now fewer in number, have dispersed and Logan whose healing powers have diminished, takes on a double role as Professor Charles Xavier’s (Patrick Stewart) protector and chauffeur.

Another responsibility is his new paternal-like relationship with an on-therun ‘tween named Laura whose self-defense skills are similar to Logan’s.

Of course, there are sinister forces at work, but in addition to providing action and suspense, the film acknowledges the effect advancing age has on its protagonists. Professor Xavier’s memory is failing, and Wolverine is no longer invincible. Hugh spent three hours every day for months getting in shape for his last installment. Ryan Reynolds has yet to convince Hugh to costar in a Wolverine/Deadpool movie. Don’t bet on Hugh saying “yes.”

T2: TRAINSPOTTING Rated R A nearly two decades long grudge between the film’s director Danny Boyle and its co-star Ewan McGregor is the main reason why a sequel to the 1996 film remained in limbo. The Boyle-McGregor estrangement began when Mr. Boyle gave Leonardo DiCaprio the starring role in The Beach—a role Mr. McGregor assumed would be his. In addition to Mr. McGregor, three other original cast members—Robert Carlyle (Begbie), Jonny Lee Miller (Simon/ aka Sick Boy) and Ewen Bremner (Spud) reprise their roles. The characters now middle-aged reflect on their misspent youth in Edinburgh’s drug underground. They are now “tourists in their own youth” as one of them observes. The film opened to positive and mixed reviews in London. The BBC critic commented, “it is not the roller coaster ride the first one was.” How could it be? •

POWER RANGERS Not Yet Rated Five teenagers take on the witch Rita Repulsa to save the world in the third film in the series.

Elizabeth Banks voices the 65 million years old villainous. Bryan Cranston provides the voice of the colorfully costumed superheroes’ mentor.

THE BOSS BABY Rated PG DreamWorks’ 3D computer animated comedy revolves around an aggressive, talkative baby dressed in a tiny suit and his seven-year-old brother Tim who pretends to like his obnoxious suitcase carrying sibling to keep on Mom and Dad’s right side. That is Alec Baldwin’s voice you hear as the titular baby. Miles Bakshi and Tobey Maguire respectively voice the young and older Tim. The movie is rated PG for what the MPAA describes as mild, rude humor.

TABLE 19 Rated PG 13 Anna Kendrick, whose Up In The Air performance brought her an Oscar nomination is abruptly dumped by her lout of a boyfriend at his sister’s wedding and sent to the Siberia of tables at the bridal dinner. Two of Broadway’s most admired and awarded stars, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersol, are perfectly cast as the two strong-willed women who rose from humble beginnings to become multi-millionaires. The new musical which received positive reviews for its Chicago production at the Goodman Theater was inspired by Lindy Woodhead’s book of the same name. Ms. LuPone who won two of her Tonys playing Eva Peron in Evita and Mama Rose in Gypsy adds Miss Arden to her list of strong-willed, real life women she portrayed on stage. The Tonywinning Ms. Ebersol recreates Miss Rubinstein’s journey from Poland to New York City where she opened a salon on Fifth Avenue a few blocks from Miss Arden’s red door emporium.

Director Michael Greif heads the behind the scenes creative team. The two remarkable women who helped blaze a path for women entrepreneurs died within 18 months of each other. Miss Rubinstein in 1965 and Miss Arden in October 1966. Somewhere in the great beyond the two legends are arguing over who should have the show-stopping number—Ms. LuPone or Ms. Ebersol?

GROUNDHOG DAY August Wilson Theater Opens April 17th In England, it is known as National Hedgehog Day but in London’s West End the American name for that day was on the marquee of the Ole’ Vic, where the show opened before coming to Broadway.

The musical based on director Harold Ramis’ 1993 movie, was a hit with Londoners and critics alike. Andy Karl, a Tony nominee for Rocky: The Musical and On The Twentieth Century has the Bill Murray role of a smug Pittsburgh TV news reporter covering the annual Punxsutawney Pennsylvania event. Trapped in a time loop, he is forced to relive the same day every day. Director Matthew Warchus, and songwriter Tim Minchin, the creative team behind the delightful Broadway musical Matilda, are likely to match or perhaps surpass that success with their new show. FYI: Tom Hanks and Michael Keaton reportedly declined the movie role before it was offered to the perfectly cast Mr. Murray.

JITNEY Samuel J. Friedman Theater Final Performance March 12th An extraordinary revival of the eighth of ten plays in August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle is a thrilling essential experience for all theatergoers.

The matchless ensemble cast includes Harvy Blanks who has performed in all ten of Mr. Wilson’s plays and John Douglas Thompson as Becker who runs the gypsy cab company and is part advisor, and, part father figure to his drivers whose troubles are many, varied and not easily solved. Their most critical problem is their jobs. Urban renewal will soon claim the space where the drivers gather and gossip while waiting for the next passenger. Tony and Obie winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson who memorably starred in Mr. Wilson’s Gem Of The Ocean and Seven Guitars directed this Manhattan Theater Club production. Now stop reading and make plans to see Jitney before its closing date.

SIGNIFICANT OTHER Booth Theater Opens March 2nd Jordan Berman (Gideon Glick), an unmarried New Yorker in his 20’s, has yet to find Mr. Right. His besties are three young women. Kiki (Sas Goldberg), who is blunt and unapologetically self-involved, Vanessa (Rebecca Naomi Jones) the aloof, cynical perennial bridesmaid and Laura (Lindsay Mendez), his closest confidante. Jordan is attracted to a muscle-bound fellow office mate who could qualify for the cover of Iron Man magazine. These intertwined lives are the subject of Joshua Harmon’s play—his first on Broadway. Barbara Barrie offers guidance, support, and wisdom as Jordan’s grandmother and confidante. Significant Other under Trip Cullman’s direction, premiered at Roundabout Theater last summer and received positive reviews. Mr. Harmon describes his play as an unromantic romantic comedy.

MISS SAIGON Broadway Theater Scheduled Opening March 1st Another UK import is the London production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s musical which ran on Broadway from 1991 to 2001.

The love affair between an American soldier and an orphaned teenager working against her will in a sleazy nightclub is set in 1975.

SISTER ACT Abby Mueller recreates Carole King’s rise from struggling Brooklyn songwriter to international stardom at the Steven Sondheim Theater. A few blocks away at the Brooks Atkinson Theater her sibling Jesse stars in Waitress until she departs with all those pies March 26. Abby who traveled across the country in the national tour of Beautiful sings Ms. King’s chart-topping songs throughout the summer. Jesse won a Tony Award in 2014 for her portrayal of Ms. King.

COME FROM WAY Gerald Schoenfeld Theater The September 11th terrorist attack on New York City forced the FAA to close all U.S. airports. Thirty-eight of the rerouted planes landed in Gander Newfoundland. The story of the bond forged between Gander’s good citizens who fed and housed their unexpected guests and the emotionally devastated passengers inspired producer Michael Rubinoff, composer/lyricist Irene Sankoff and David Hein to create what is undeniably the most unusual new musical of the season.

THEATER & ARTS LAND THAT I LOVE In NYC Public Schools During March and April A new musical celebrating the history of the city’s immigrant population will be seen by thousands of New York City’s schoolchildren in March and April. Some 50 schools will participate in the tour produced by Inside Broadway, a nonprofit organization. The show features the music of Irving Berlin, himself an immigrant, who wrote an estimated 1500 songs including “God Bless America.” Now in its 35th year, Inside Broadway’s programs will reach an estimated audience of 50,000 young people in 2017. Land That I Love focuses on three young immigrants and the obstacles they face pursuing the American dream.

CITY CENTER ENCORES/ THE NEW YORKERS March 22-26 Gangsters with Tommy guns and leggy flappers sing and dance in Cole Porter’s 1930’s Prohibitionera musical. The score includes “I Happen To Like New York” and “Love For Sale”—a thenscandalous number which nearly was cut from the show.

AMELIE Walter Kerr Theater Previews Begin March 9th The musical version of the enchanting 2001 Oscar nominated movie arrives on Broadway by way of Los Angeles where it received mostly positive reviews.

Philippa Soo who originated the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in the mega-hit is the shy, lonely 18-year-old, day dreaming, title character who enhances the lives of others by performing random acts of kindness. Few young women are as innocent as Amelie when she leaves her small village and moves to Paris. There Amelie works at a Montmartre cafe, continues to befriend strangers and falls in love with Nino (Adam Chanler-Berat). He pessimistically observes “times are hard for dreamers.” Amelie’s creative team is led by director Pam MacKinnon, a Tony winner and Obie Award recipient. • MARCH 2017 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 83

PAT COLLINS’ PICKS OF HOME ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES

LION RATED PG One of last year’s highly praised movies is based on a remarkable true story which began in a train station in India 31 years ago. Five-year-old Saroo Brierley (Sunny Powar) is separated from his older sibling and boards a train assuming his brother is on board. He is not, and when the trip ends in Calcutta, the police send Saroo to an orphanage. He is adopted by an Australian couple Sue and John Brierley (Nicole Kidman and David Wenham). Flash forward two decades and the grown up Saroo (Dev Patel), a university student in Melbourne follows the advice of girlfriend (Rooney Mara) to use Google Earth to locate his family’s remote village near the Khandwa rock formations. The quest is not only an emotional one for Saroo but also for his adoptive parents. I will not divulge how his search ends but place a tissue box next to the bowl of popcorn. There are innumerable stories of separated families and a protagonist’s quest to find a way home but none more powerful than the one in director Garth Davis’ film. Mr. Patel whose performance in Slumdog Millionaire launched his career received a supporting actor Oscar nomination. The film was also recognized with five additional nominations including best film and Nicole Kidman’s Supporting Actress performance. What is the derivation of the movie’s title? The real life hero’s name is Sheru which is the Hindi word for Lion.

MOANA RATED PG She is a spunky Polynesian princess who does not wear royal robes or a bejeweled crown or require a prince to help save the people of her small island from extinction. There are fewer fish to catch in the surrounding ocean waters, and a blight destroyed most of the island’s vegetation. The demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who stole a special stone from a vengeful goddess, is responsible for the curse which Moana sets out to reverse. She disobeys her father’s royal orders which forbid all islanders from swimming or sailing beyond the barrier reef.

Undeterred Moana sets sail in a small boat with her sidekick Heihei (Alan Tudyk) a rainbow colored chicken with little chance of making the list of all-time most memorable animated sidekicks—visually Moana is spectacular from rolling ocean waves to flora and fauna. The screenwriters wisely created a supportive grandmother for Moana.

What grandparent can resist buying the DVD/Blu-ray version for her/his grandchild? The movie’s talented directors John Musker and Ron Clements also entertained family audiences with the enchanting Aladdin, and another water themed animated film The Little Mermaid.

Lin Manuel-Miranda, a Tony winner for Hamilton, co-wrote Moana’s Oscar-nominated song “How Far I’ll Go.” With a thin plot and an ordinary screenplay, the mouse house’s recent animated feature does not equal the enchanting Frozen. However, Moana’s titular character embodies optimism, determination, and bravery—qualities we want to instill in all our young girls.

JACKIE RATED R November 23, 1963: Jacqueline Kennedy in a blood-stained pink suit watches as Vice President Lyndon Johnson is sworn in as the nation’s 36th president aboard Air Force One. The images are indelible for all who saw the events of that day in Dallas unfold live on television. Chilean director Pablo Larrain does not focus on President Kennedy’s assassination or the conspiracy theories surrounding it. Instead, he combines fact and fiction to recreate the First Lady’s last days in the White House. Natalie Portman has the daunting assignment of playing the then most famous woman in the world as she consoles her young children, meticulously plans her husband’s funeral and copes with her grief. An interview she granted Theodore White (Billy Crudup) for Life magazine was one of the director’s’ many sources of information. Mr. Larrain added several fictional scenes as well including one in which Mrs. Kennedy walks through the many rooms in the White House at night with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of vodka in the other. Ms. Portman carries the movie on her slender shoulders as the elegant, strong-willed, emotionally devastated woman who was a symbol of endurance for millions of Americans who desperately needed one. Unfortunately, Jackie is not a memorable movie, but Ms. Portman delivers an unforgettable performance.

20th CENTURY WOMEN RATED R All movies fall into one of three categories—those with a memorable plot, those with a forgettable plot and those with plots which can be summarized on a small post-it.

Director Mike Mills’ dramedy falls into the latter category.

Annette Benning who was Oscar nominated for playing a mother in American Beauty and The Kids Are Alright adds another parental role to her bio as Dorothea Fields, a 50-something divorced mom raising a 15-year-old son in the upscale community of Santa Barbara. Jamie (Lucas Jade Zunmann) has two other females in his life—a sort of girlfriend (Elle Fanning), Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a young photographer in her early 20’s and Dorothea’s tenant. The aging hippy handyman/carpenter (Billy Crudup) sleeps with both. The story such as it is revolves around the fractious relationship between mother and son. Dorothea who describes herself as an old-school feminist asks Abby and Julie to take on the responsibilities of raising Jamie. The movie is a fictionalized account of Mr. Mills’ teen years in the 1970’s. Moviegoers showed little interest in Mr. Mills’ adolescence and his virtually plotless movie which grossed approximately $5 million at the box office. For movies with very good plots, I suggest watching Ms. Benning in The Grifters, Being Julia and the two referenced above.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM RATED PG 13 Magizoologist and author Newt Scamander traveling with a suitcase containing restless magical creatures arrive in Prohibition-era New York City for what turns out to be an unexpectedly dangerous adventure. The events unfold several decades before Scamander’s books were required reading for Harry Potter and his fellow Hogwarts classmates. J. K. Rowling wrote the screenplay and produced the movie which took in more than $8 million at the global box office. That buys a lot of butterbeer!

ALLIED RATED R It’s 1940’s Casablanca, two lovers, and Nazis occupying the city: Sound familiar?

Director Michael Curtiz’s 1943 film and director Robert Zemeckis’ Allied have these three elements in common. However one is a treasured Oscar winner, and the other is an unexceptional tale of love and betrayal. Brad Pitt as Max Vatan, a Canadian intelligence officer, arrives in Morocco and is greeted by Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard), a French Resistance fighter. Their mission is to pose as a married couple while preparing to assassinate the German ambassador at a swastika-decorated formal dinner party. What better way for these two to get acquainted than making love in the backseat of a car during a ferocious sandstorm. The plot becomes less attractive when Max is reassigned to a desk job in London.

Marianne puts away her guns and begins a new life as a doting wife, the mother of their baby girl and maybe a Nazi spy. No need for a spoiler alert.

That major plot point, unfortunately, is revealed by one of Max’s superiors in British Intelligence in Allied’s coming attraction trailer. The lack of onscreen chemistry between Ms. Cotillard and Mr. Pitt should put an end to those rumors of an off-screen affair between the co-stars. Mr. Pitt who fought the Nazis in Fury and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds appears less enthusiastic about this role which requires little more than eliminating a few Nazis in dinner jackets and romancing Ms. Cotillard’s character. Robert Zemeckis who directed such diverse and superb films as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the Oscar-winning Forest Gump will not be handed a prize for Allied.

MISS SLOANE RATED R In the not too distant future tech wizards attempting to create robotic lobbyists should consider modeling their creations after Jessica Chastain’s character Elizabeth Sloane, an unemotional, workaholic perfectionist. Ms. Sloane is a shark in stilettos and Armani suits. Her passion is outmaneuvering the opposition. “I’m hired to win” is her mantra. Sam Waterston, as the firms’ senior partner, chooses Ms. Sloane to represent the well-financed gun lobby before a congressional committee in the aftermath of the massacres in Columbine, Newton and Charleston. She refuses, is unceremoniously fired and joins a boutique firm representing clients who support passage of gun control legislation. Is Ms. Sloane on board to exact revenge on her former boss or has she suddenly acquired an ethical gyroscope? Ms. Chastain, a superb actress whose filmography includes Zero Dark Thirty and The Help, is her latest movie’s one and only asset. Mr. Madden attempts but fails to deliver an engrossing story of how lobbyists and spin doctors influence members of Congress. Director John Madden’s film is not in the same league as. The West Wing remains the gold standard in its fictional depiction of Washington insiders.

A MONSTER CALLS RATED PG Connor (Lewis MacDougall) a bullied twelve-year-old British schoolboy who lives with his terminally ill mother (Felicity Jones) has an unusual ally- an enormous, talkative yew tree creature voiced by Liam Neeson.

MASTER OF NONE (Season 1) Netflix’s ten episode comedy/drama starring the show’s co-creator Aziz Ansari as Dev, a struggling New York actor. •

ew York was a thriving film production city long before the sunny skies of Hollywood began to lure producers and filmmakers west in the early 1900s. D.W. Griffith loved to shoot here, and Mack Sennett’s Keystone Kops ran rampant through Coney Island.

Today, the city goes out of its way to court the film industry: There’s a special mayor’s office to act as an industry liaison, to provide police protection for stars and production crews—and even to help arrange scenes ranging from helicopter chases to historical location settings.

It’s no wonder, then, that many visitors to movie land’s Gotham get a feeling of deja vu. Here are just a few of the films and locations you may remember: America, America (1963), Elia Kazan’s portrayal of his own family’s immigration to the U.S, incorporates Ellis Island locales.

American Psycho (2000) Director Mary Harron’s depiction of yuppie evil brilliantly portrayed by Christian Bale. A parade of Tribeca restaurants and nightclubs are featured throughout the film.

Arthur (1981), in which Dudley Moore questions his dates’ (Liza Minnelli) profession just a bit too loudly in the Oak Bar at the Plaza Hotel.

Big (1988) stars Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia performing an impressive musical number at the former FAO Schwarz.

Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), based on Tom Wolfe’s novel, captures Sherman McCoy’s world of Upper East Side privilege and debauchery. Courtroom scenes were filmed on location in the Bronx.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), in which Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard find love on Fifth Avenue.

Crocodile Dundee (1987), in which Paul Hogan checks in at the Plaza Hotel while visiting from Down Under.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1984) portrays Rosanna Arquette as a suburban housewife and her unexpected adventures with Madonna in Battery Park.

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), in which Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson track down a mad bomber (Jeremy Irons) on the streets of New York.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) stars Al Pacino and two cohorts who turn a simple Brooklyn bank robbery into chaos.

Ghostbusters (1984), in which Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis move into (and blow the roof off) the No. 8 Hook and Ladder Firehouse in TriBecCa and finally come to terms with these supernatural beings at 55 Central Park West.

The Godfather (1972), the first of a trilogy, this stars Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Diane Keaton, and Robert Duvall in Mario Puzo’s look at the mob.

The Godfather, Part II (1974) returns to Little Italy where Robert De Niro plays young mob boss Don Corleone.

GoodFellas (1990), a Martin Scorsese film in which Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci rise in the mob ranks.

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Woody Allen’s Manhattan-based family drama starring Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, and Dianne Wiest. Michael Caine, Carrie Fisher, Sam Waterson, and Allen add to the angst.

King Kong (1976) is Dino De Laurentiis’s version of the 1933 animal magnetism original. Jessica Lange stars along with the overgrown primate and features the Manhattan and the World Trade Center.

The Lost Weekend (1945), in which Ray Milland suffers the DTs at Bellevue Hospital after a three-day bender.

Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) features Woody Allen as a New York book editor, with Diane Keaton, as his wife, delving into the mysterious disappearance of their neighbor.

Marty (1955), Romance blooms on the Bronx’s Arthur Avenue when lonely butcher Marty (Ernest Borgnine) and plain schoolteacher Clara (Betsy Blair) meet at the Stardust Ballroom and find love against the odds.

Mean Streets (1973), Martin Scorsese’s slice of life in Little Italy starring a young Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.

Midnight Cowboy (1969), in which Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight stop traffic at West 58th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) is a classic tale that proves there really is a Santa Claus. A young Natalie Wood co-stars with Maureen O’Hara, a Macy’s employee.

Moonstruck (1987) has Cher finding love with Nicolas Cage at the Metropolitan Opera.

Night Falls on Manhattan (1997), Sidney Lumet’s drama about police corruption, starring Andy Garcia, takes its cast to the Municipal Building, the U.S. Customs House, and Bowling Green.

On the Town (1949), a musical by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green is the quintessential New York picture, with Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Ann Miller dancing from Wall Street to Rockefeller Center.

The Pawnbroker (1965) is Sidney Lumet’s film of a Jewish concentration camp survivor (Rod Steiger) running a pawnshop in Harlem.

Prince of Tides (1991) stars Barbra Streisand as a New York psychiatrist who helps a high school football coach (Nick Nolte) uncover his darkest secrets.

Ransom (1996), directed by Ron Howard, stars Mel Gibson as the distraught father trying to save his kidnapped son. Scenes include Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain and the FDR Drive.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968) highlights the Dakota Apartments (West 72nd St. and Central Park West) in Roman Polanski’s film, starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes.

Saturday Night Fever (1977) shows John Travolta’s life as he tries to escape his dead-end career as a disco king. His identity crisis reaches a climax atop the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge when a friend falls to his death.

Serpico (1974) features Al Pacino fighting corruption in the NYPD, with location shots at New York University.

Sophie’s Choice (1982) stars a very Victorian-looking Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline, who reside in Flatbush at 101 Rugby Road.

Superman (1978) finds Clark Kent, the mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet, saving the world—and Lois Lane. The former Daily News Building is featured.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) finds subway riders at the mercy of extortionists on the IRT’s No. 6 subway.

Taxi Driver (1976), a Martin Scorsese film in which Robert De Niro discovers his talents for cleaning up New York’s crime-ridden streets.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), based on Betty Smith’s novel, stars Dorothy McGuire and Joan Blondell in the depiction of a troubled Irish family.

West Side Story (1961) pits two streets gangs on the West Side with opening scenes taking place between Amsterdam and West End Avenues at West 68th Street.

By Joan Bauer COMMONWEALTH by Ann Patchett HarperCollins Pay close attention when you read Ann Patchett’s seventh novel, Commonwealth. It begins at a baby’s christening party on an impossibly hot day. Ice is needed. Relief is needed. There are too many people in the Keatings’ house, too many in the yard. The Catholic priest is hiding from the crowd, sensing something in the air. And Bert Cousins comes to the door, an uninvited guest, a lawyer, a man who is trying to escape his needy wife and young children, and he has brought a large bottle of gin as his christening gift. Gin, it turns out, is what many of the guests need, but no one more than Beverly Keating, the hostess and baby Franny’s mother, a woman so beautiful that men are drawn to her like moths to light. When Bert Cousins sees Beverly, he just feels that something is about to change. So he kisses a married woman in her house with her police officer husband downstairs…and she doesn’t resist. It was “the magic of gin and orange juice.

This was the start of his life.” That stolen kiss causes one new family to begin and two others to crash and burn.

It would be easy to hate Beverly and Bert for this, and it’s to Patchett’s credit that she doesn’t ever allow Commonwealth to become mired in black and white thinking. She gloriously bends time, moving us forward and backward to understand why people do stupid things and how they live and ache under the weight of those decisions. She is a writer with a rare understanding of human nature, and she shows us the depth of her people in sometimes innocuous moments. Beverly’s ex-husband says this to his daughter Franny right before his chemotherapy: “Your mother didn’t have her own character. She turned into anyone she was sitting next to.” She shows children scarred by adultery and scorned spouses hurt and bitter. Her exploration of children being cast into one big happy family and shuttled back and forth between newly married parents is achingly real. There are many characters here to keep track of, and the reader ought not to let one character drop because the third person narrative is exquisitely polished and each voice, no matter how small, comes to life.

The story thread I found most fascinating is the adult Franny’s affair with a famous novelist who is decades older than she. In a moment of naïveté muddied by need, she tells him the story of her family without saying, “off the record.” He absorbs the drama, makes it his own, and turns it into a best-selling novel titled Commonwealth, and there it is wherever books are sold. It is his story now, his interpretation, but not really, and we are left wondering about our own stories, and who owns them anyway. How do we allow them to change? How do we throw them away and start fresh? And what in the world does that mean?

Commonwealth is a good example of God being in the details. It is 88 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2017

a careful accounting of bad choices and surprising grace written with perception and caution. In a world that says, well, let’s just move on and forget the negative stuff, Ann Patchett has written a masterful tale about how very hard it is to do that, but also how necessary.

ccording to history, gazpacho’s origin is rooted in mystery. Theories say Romans introduced the first gazpacho combination in Spain and Portugal comprised of bread, olive oil, water, and garlic. Later the chilled cuisine was said to be refined in Spain with bread, almonds, garlic, olive oil, salt, and vinegar. By the 19th century, tomatoes were added to the mix; hence the classic red color we all know. And although chilled soups have never reached the popularity of the hot varieties, one young entrepreneur saw the trend to change the American menus for good.

Enter Austin Allen who during college, ventured to Spain for a four-month study abroad experience. Little did he know the trip would result in a permanent four-year stay. While there, he immersed himself in Spanish culture and lifestyle finding himself drawn to the influence of gazpacho. “It was love at first sip! From the first moment I tried it, I couldn’t get enough gazpacho.”

It was not long until he found himself drinking gazpacho straight from the carton. He asked, ‘Who needs a bowl anyway—it’s so delicious.’ This passion inspired an idea which is known today as Tio Gazpacho—the first-ever bottled soup hitting shelves in six original flavors. You’ll find Clasico (vine-ripened tomato, green pepper, cucumber), De Sol (yellow tomato, yellow pepper, carrot), Verde (kale, spinach, avocado, mint), and Rosado (watermelon, cilantro, cayenne). And as of January 2017, Maiz (corn, roasted poblano, lime) and Fresa (strawberry, basil, romaine).

Following his time abroad, the thought of gazpacho lingered. However, Allan returned to the U.S. to complete his studies and in 2005 to pursue a career in financial services as a branch manager. He later received the title of a corporate trainer, and by 2012, an itch for another career change brought him to Miami. There, Allan volunteered as a member of the presidential campaign. It was in Miami when Allan decided to pursue his passion for gazpacho. “Miami was a great place to get Tio started.

It is warm all year round, and there is a large Latin population that is familiar with Spanish cuisine.”

How did you land in New York?

Even though I loved my time in Miami, New York has always been my home, so after three years I came back to build upon what I started in Florida. I guess I always knew that I would have to move back to New York to build my brand. New York is the capital of the world!

Has your family always supported your decision to work as an entrepreneur?

You can only imagine how my parents reacted when I told them ‘I’m quitting my job and starting a soup company!’ But they know that I am not easily swayed, so they didn’t try to convince me otherwise. Now they couldn’t be more excited about what I have been able to build over these last few years.

What are personal/business challenges you’ve faced thus far?

Challenges are inevitable in any business, but for a startup, the pressure is often maximized in a heightened time frame. Along the way, I learned that accepting negative feedback is often difficult but necessary. One of the biggest challenges you face as an entrepreneur is that everyone wants to give you advice, and it’s often difficult to separate the bad advice from the good. I consider myself very fortunate because I have an incredible network of entrepreneur friends that I can always reach out to for help. I don’t know if other industries are like this, but the natural food industry is excellent because there is a ton of collaboration going on between brands.

Explain your recent research trips to Spain?

Last summer I had the opportunity to spend a week in Spain visiting olive fields and the manufacturing facility where they make

the sherry vinegar we use in our Clasico. Every other time I have visited Spain—and we are probably talking about 20 trips—I have always been on vacation, so to go to Spain in this role was surreal.

How have partnerships impacted your business methods/ strategies?

Last year was a pivotal year for the brand. Part of the growing success is a result of two partnerships. In early spring, Tio Gazpacho closed a $1.25 million Series A funding round with 301 Inc. (General Mills’ business development and venture capital arm). I work directly with 301, Inc. to gather insights, develop connections, and establish the brand as a leader in the drinkable soup category.

With fall 2016 came another evolution for Tio partnering with celebrity chef, José Andrés, and his company, Think Food Group.

Under the guidance of José Andrés, Think Food Group consults with Tio on new product development and works cohesively to expand the company’s retail and foodservice offerings.

Elaborate on Development in Gardening Partnership’s involvement in Tio. Tio is committed to giving back and donates 5 cents for every bottle sold to Development in Gardening Partnership (DIG), a non-profit whose mission is to ensure that people all over the world have access to quality, nutritious food. I had known Sarah, the executive director of DIG for a few years before I started Tio. But sharing a piece of each sale was a no-brainer. They are changing the world through food and nutrition, specifically by building sustainable gardens and teaching entrepreneurship in developing countries affected by HIV. Is souping an alternative and the future to juicing?

Staying true to the brand’s mission to reinvent soup. Some research also predicts ‘juicing’ as a wave of the past. ‘Souping’ is sometimes called a heartier liquid cleanse with added fibers supporting the fruit and veggie base.

What’s to come in 2017?

Maiz and Fresa are the newest flavors on shelves. Throughout 2017, I will continue to provide a healthier meal alternative but this time outside of the organic category. Tio recently worked to alter the packaging and satisfy more consumers on both a cost and convenience level.

How do you plan to change the traditional perception of gazpacho?

Tio is more than gazpacho. It stands for a healthy, fresh, convenient flavor. Tio is a low-calorie lunch packed full of veggies and rich nutrients vital to any diet. Spaniards have been keeping chilled soups a secret for far too long. It is about time that Americans get to have a product like Tio Gazpacho.

MY NEW YORK STORY

’m a born New Yorker and have seen how the entire city has changed in such an amazing way. The transformation of so many neighborhoods is incredulous. It’s hard to believe, but so true. This is a great city which keeps getting better.

My first job was at age seven at the PAL on Hanson Place, Brooklyn where I imitated Elvis and got $20. It was unimaginable then that many years later I would be meeting Elvis in Las Vegas. My life’s work would be sealed!

Sure, I had my own band in high school, and loved music, but never thought of it as a career.

The next day after seeing Elvis I got into a conversation with a gentleman at La Taverna restaurant in Los Angeles. He asked me about my take and opinion on the show; we talked about the intricacies and nuances of the performance for quite some time. He was shocked I did not work at a record company or in the music business. He strongly suggested and encouraged me to be a record producer. That gentlemen was Phil Spector, arguably the best record producer of all time. I decided to take him very seriously. Eventually, I became a record producer and composer and have been blessed to have worked with some of the greatest talents of all time: George Benson, O.C. Smith, Dionne Warwick, Cuba Gooding and the Main Ingredient to name a few.

I have also been credited as an actor and published author.

But music is just half the story. Sports have always been an important part of my life. I worked for the New York Giants during my teen years where I met Y.A. Tittle who tutored me in the art of “quarterbacking” and the finer points of taking the snap from the center, the screen pass, reading coverages and so much more. Of course, it was thrilling being on the sidelines with the likes of Vince Lombard, Johnny Unitas and all the greats who came to Yankee Stadium. On Sundays, I would get to the stadium an hour before the players. I remember walking into the stadium one day and noticed a note on the training table. I don’t remember exactly what it said, but it was a beautiful message about peace. It was signed Giovanni Montini, Pope Paul VI, who had celebrated mass at Yankee Stadium the previous Monday. It was the first time a Pope ever visited the U.S. I was mesmerized and just stared at the note.

During that time, I played quarterback for St. John’s Prep in Brooklyn and that lead to playing at the college level for Central Connecticut State. One summer, I had the opportunity to play for Kansas City Chiefs coach Hank Stram at a summer camp which resulted in meeting Joe Namath when the New York Jets played the Chiefs at Shea Stadium. After an injury which impacted my quality of play, I decided to finish my education at St. John’s University and later became a partner in Bachelor’s 111 nightclub, originally made famous by Joe Namath.

WORDS FOR PRACTICAL LIVING

JUST THE BEGINNING… It’s been quite a journey: I have attended some of the greatest entertainment and sports events that have ever taken place. Concerts by Elvis, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and just about every prominent artist of multiple generations.

I have seen World Series games, and NFC and AFC Championship games at Yankee and Shea Stadiums, Stanley Cup Playoffs, NBA Finals, events at the old Madison Square Garden & the Grand Opening of the new MSG. I sat ringside at the greatest sporting event of all time(in my opinion), the unification heavyweight championship of Ali-Frazier. I could go on and on.

But it’s the music that runs deep. I am very proud of my production of George Benson’s recording of the song “New York City” written by Jimmy George & James Auspitz, a real ode to the city that never sleeps. The song is featured on the new Ernie Anastos in New York show on FOX5. Can’t get much more New York than that! I am currently working on my memoirs entitled “We Made Them Dance” for a book and screenplay development.

The first three cuts are completed including the single and title tune “Magic Night” for Benny Marsella’s upcoming album. Benny is a South Philadelphia singing legend, who just happens to be a Yankees fan—that’s how he made the cut! •

Over time people have often suggested that I write down some of the things I say—original quotes so to speak. I am currently working on a book of original quotes and want to share seven—one for each day of the week. I hope you find these inspiring!

What’s the recipe for the perfect dining experience?

Good company is a huge part of it!

Learn to be patient and take your time. Good food takes time.

What does your new book Share bring to the table?

Share brings eclectic, and varying recipes all selected so that any combination of them would work great together for a dinner party.
