know you’ve got a lot on your plate. I also know you are probably trying to figure out how this “new normal” will work out. So is everyone else. The best advice to anyone: Go at your own pace. But one aspect of this new awakening is what I’ve been yearning for a long time: getting together with family and friends. I’m sure you have too! With masks now a memory, shots in the arm a given, workers returning to offices, restaurants at total capacity, it’s all made a big difference. So fellow New Yorkers, let’s applaud this new freedom. And we have much to celebrate this month. Whether it be Father’s Day, Birthdays, Weddings, or special Graduations, it’s a new cause for rejoining with those you love and becoming a better person going forward. It will not only make them smile but makes you feel good. A better person, you ask. That’s right. Better listeners at home and in business. A better neighbor who commits to service for others—with no expectation of anything in return. And, most important, a better person who communicates and becomes involved with family and friends. Yes, that means the phone turned off. Our editorial staff combed the city with articles on do-gooders who inspire and have made strides in our changing community. We bring you our June issue, which features parent-focused entrepreneur Lyss Stern who contracted COVID last year. Since then, she has spent time recovering from its effects. However, being a long hauler has not stopped her one bit. She’s an inspiration to us and started two business ventures with roots in helping others. Another New Yorker who has made an impact is philanthropist and activist Jean Shafiroff. Well-known in the American social circuit as a groundbreaking philanthropist, Jean has used her good fortune to better humankind. Her vast credits of charitable work include serving on the boards of many foundations and organizations. With these significant accomplishments, it is easy to see why the bestowed title of First Lady of Philanthropy is incredibly merited. Jean’s generosity and extensive work as a volunteer fundraiser and leader in the philanthropic world is rooted in a life-long mission. Like you, I have found walking the best way to discover new restaurants and attractions that have opened in recent months. Just think, no equipment necessary! Yes, walking is the best exercise. And not to be overlooked, and with restrictions being lifted, get ready for a blockbuster summer season at the movie theater. So, grab the sunscreen and pull up a chaise lounge to get ready for a summer filled with fun and once-in-a-lifetime thrills here and beyond. See you next issue…

ean Shafiroff is one of the most heralded philanthropists of our modern times. Her fondness for giving is consistent throughout the years - especially this past year. As the world begins to emerge from the shadow of 2020, her genuine earnestness to discover what will make nations fully heal has become the primary mission of this patron of good deeds. Jean’s constant state of giving is apparent to anyone who meets her. In fact, her sheer sense of good will is rather irresistible and makes one realize that it is possible to have a truly harmonious existence. She is always driven to convey a message that will positively impact the planet.

There is gratitude for the storied journey Jean continues to take throughout America as she carries the title of First Lady of Philanthropy with great pride. The sentiment rings true stronger than ever as the leader continues to help communities process, address and move forward from all the heartache caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand her passion one simply has to look at her background. Her current credits of charitable work include serving on the boards of the American Humane, Southampton Hospital Association, New York City Mission Society, French Heritage Society, Couture Council of the Museum at FIT, Global Strays, and Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Honorary

And, in December 2020, Dan’s Paper named her “Philanthropist of the Year” at their Long Island Power Women’s Award Ceremony. It is her thought-provoking ideas on the business of philanthropy that have created a position for her as one of the leading authorities on the art of giving. Sought-after guidance as an advisor has driven her to become a popular television host, writer, and the author of the book “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give.” Jean’s work has also created a new space for her as the host and producer of the television program “Successful Philanthropy.” She conducts riveting interviews with world leaders, international philanthropists, politicians and celebrities alike that airs several times a week through LTV studios in East Hampton, NY (Channel 20), several times a week on SunTV20 in Southampton, NY (Channel 20),

and once a week on Friday nights at 8:30 p.m. in New York City on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, Spectr um Channels, Verizon/FiOS Channels, and RCN Channel. The success of the show has led to it also gearing up for additional markets in 2021. Notable figures such as activists Ndaba Mandela, Kerry Kennedy, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Susan L. Taylor, and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa have brought to light the art of giving with the host during one-on-ones. “The interviews on my show ‘Successful Philanthropy’ give very helpful information to the viewers,” stated the host during a discussion with Authority Magazine in April. “These unique and powerful individuals are taking the time to share their philosophy on philanthropy and what they are doing to change things for the better. I am growing this show and it’s opening up

new markets and public understanding as to the way charity works.”

the change you want to see in the world.” Jean lives this motto on a daily basis.

Jean’s role as the First Lady of Philanthropy will stand the test of time because of the serious attitude she has taken to make the coveted title more than just a name on paper or featured on a television show. Even on social media every move she makes is crucial toward the success of her mission to help mankind.

All of the charitable work Jean has done to date is a sincere accomplishment. And, it is only the beginning of so much more to come. As an innovative leader and tireless advocate, the worldwide change she desires to see might still be miles away to some. Jean, though, only sees a path leading to a bright future for mankind as she walks in unity with organizations down the road of successful philanthropy.

“You have to always be positive and to make people feel good about who they are, especially right now. We have just gone through one of the most difficult times in history where people don’t have jobs and they don’t have food for their families. It’s been a horrific time for many people. But, they still need positivity. It is showing that there are people to support them and help them move forward.”

LYSS STERN The DivaMoms Creator Masters The Art Of The Pivot by Adam Morgan

ew women are harder working, more connected and more creative than Lyss Stern, a one-woman dynamo—excuse us, entreprenista—who created and nourished DivaMoms from an online community into a thriving conduit for moms and marketers. The 40-something mother of three has boundless energy, inventive ideas, and a proactive sense of what stylish, on-the-go moms will want and buy next. And then came the 2020 pandemic. Her business ground to a halt, as did most efforts built on social engagement, in-person gatherings, and events. It got worse when she and her husband, Brian, a respected talent manager/producer, contracted COVID. The virus hit Stern particularly hard. She spent weeks in agony, struggling to recover while taking care of her family and salvaging her business. “COVID was a life-changing experience which I’m still experiencing,” says Stern, who has been diagnosed a long hauler. While most victims have fully recovered,

she was left with fatigue, tinnitus, the loss of taste and smell, and shortness of breath no matter how simple the activity. “It showed me how fragile life is. And not just health wise, but how you live your day-to-day: routines, habits, obligations,” explains Stern. “Everything went out the window. There’s no aspect of my business and industry that hasn’t been affected. But what’s come out of this is an appreciation for community and the communal experience. That’s what I’ve focused on my whole career. Bringing people together, sharing opinions, thoughts, suggestions, anecdotes, advice. Creating a network where we can enjoy the common experience. COVID showed us we’re not alone. We’re in this together. And it inspired me to pivot.” She isn’t kidding. While still struggling with COVID’s parting gifts, Stern has somehow summoned the energy to launch not one but three new ventures. Kadoodle Kids, a mask-design set for children allows little ones to use their creativity and imagination

with markers, stickers, stamps, glitter pens, and other fun kid-friendly tools. Chamama, an idea born (no pun intended) with her partner Liza Maltz, a successful doula and founder of parent-to-parent referral community (haveananny.com). Stern credits Maltz for quite literally saving her life while supporting Stern through Covid. “Liza intuitively knew what I needed throughout every aspect of my illness” recalls Stern. “I called her up last summer and said we need to make this accessible to everyone. Everyone should feel this support in their daily life.” Together, the two are launching Chamama wellness boxes—quarterly deliveries designed to give suffering loved ones a boost in spirit. Filled with “remedies for the soul,” Chamama boxes include effective self-soothers like SOM sleep and Declare’s “meditation mask” along with healing essentials such as supplements, CBD oils, and custom blend teas they’ve curated with Modest Mix and even a CD from British violinist Charlie Siem.

JUNE 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 29

Stern is careful to emphasize that Chamama is not a cure, but a show of care. Stern and Maltz landed on the name “Chamama” from Stern’s daugther’s end-of-day greeting for her mom, Chamama’s home! “That’s what we wanted to capture—that feeling of your person walking through the door, that feeling that everything is going to be okay. Chamama boxes are valued at over $400 and will retail for $99 with a portion of the proceeds going to Survivor Corp, the largest COVID survivor community to date. “If we learned anything this past year, it’s that life can change in an instant,” says Stern. “And you need to be ready. There’s no shame in changing direction. My business was built on bringing people together. That became near impossible. And so, I took a hard look at what I was doing, what I wanted to do, and what was possible. But you need to be honest, open-minded, and practical.” Her canvas has widened, and even with bouts of brain fog she still experiences, her focus and drive have helped her juggle all the balls she’s thrown into the air. Case in point: DivaMoms, Stern’s long-time marketing platform. When events in the city dried up, she headed to The Poconos to Tyler Hill Camp. For two retreats now, Stern, along with Tyler Hill Camp’s owner Wendy Siegel, has sponsored a “DivaMoms Getaway Weekend” that treats women to three days of spirit-lifting indulgences: morning meditation, yoga, acupuncture, cooking, hiking, wine-and-dye, campfires, gourmet dining, and energy alignment sessions with Stern’s personal healer, Tara Mandy (savagebalance.com), who offers guests private sound baths and Reiki in an outdoor pavilion. There’s also free time to paddleboard, nap, or just find your calm on a blanket by the lake. The three days may sound like a short amount of time, but when the moms go off the grid, even for a

30 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

few hours, it makes the world of difference! By the end of the weekend, it is so clear how this experience is necessary. Not only do the moms look different when they leave at the end of the weekend (super well-rested), they feel as if they were away for a month! Oh, and of course let’s not forget the most coveted gift bags that every mom receives (worth over $1 thousand in value). “Moms have had quite a year, and we deserve a weekend for ourselves,” says Stern. “We’re CEOs of our family, but we haven’t had a vacation. This is it. Our weekend getaway is just what we need after months of home-schooling, lockdowns, child-care, and managing our homes. This has kept me sane,” said Stern. “Being with like-minded women far away from life healed my soul in so many unexpected ways.” The retreats have been so well received that they are adding to the Fall and Spring, DivaMoms, Glamas (Grandmas) and Dads retreats. The next Fall retreat which already has a long wait #lysst is October 1st - 3rd.

Stern’s creativity and entrepreneurial instincts took hold when she was a teenager working in retail, she dove into the deep end after graduating from Syracuse University and getting her “hazing” from New York’s toughest, most feared publicist and event

queen: Peggy Seagal. It was challenging work but taught her the value of the hustle. She enjoyed a thriving career, social life, and relationship with her now-husband Brian, and soon began a family. And that’s when her most extraordinary pivot began. “Before I married and had kids, I led a very glamorous Sex and The City life in New York City,” Stern remembers. “I worked in PR and events with one of the toughest bosses in entertainment and was out pretty much every night, either for work or with girlfriends. But when I started my family, it was expected that you just had to give that up. I said no. I still wanted to dress up, go out, see friends, and stay social. I knew I could be the best wife and mom and still be me. And I was one of the first to identify I wasn’t alone. There were millions of people just like me who could do laundry in their Louboutin’s. I brought all these women together through DivaMoms.” It started small, then grew and grew! But not without incredible persistence. “I had to convince marketers my audience was worth it,” says Stern. “DivaMoms helped open brands to a new kind of consumer: stylish, sexy, socially connected women living their best lives. This was no small feat—it took years, but it worked. Major products, movies, even book series like Fifty Shades of Grey were made successful because of this audience.” Marketers have come to see immense value in Stern’s audience, which includes social media, events, sponsorships, and publishing (she’s authored two books: Motherhood Is a B#TCH! 10 Steps to Regaining Your Sanity, Sexiness and Inner Diva, co-written with Sheryl Berk, and If You Give a Mom a Martini, co-authored by Julie Klappas). She is also working a third book as well as a secret project she will not talk about (she is superstitious) and wears her evil eye necklace or bracelet daily.

“Lyss helps bring the fun and the glamour back into parenting.” –Lindsey Peers, Owner/The Craft Studio NYC “Lyss has been an absolute joy. She is professional, creative, and hard working. Lyss is truly a rock star mom!” –Dana Haddad, Admissions Guru/New York Admissions, LLC Her “Mom Mogul Breakfast” became one of New York’s most in-demand events with the likes of Rebecca Minkoff, jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher, celebrity stylist June Ambrose, Gilt Groupe co-founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, Flywheel Sports creator Ruth Zukerman, GLAM4GOOD founder Mary Alice Stephenson, super model Veronica Webb and Randi Zuckerberg. “DivaMoms stands out for many reasons: my voice, the quality of my audience, the level of engagement, and the content I create. And through that, I’ve built a virtual community of like-minded women who appreciate honest, thoughtful conversations. That has served as the foundation for many bigger projects I’ve launched.” Though she’s often credited with being one of the original “influencers,” Stern loathes the term. “Yes, I helped pave the path, but there’s a lack of genuineness now throughout the industry. I really think of myself more as a connector and an advocate for emerging brands. I love to support other momowned businesses and honestly get such a thrill when I can help someone reach a status of sold out or fully booked.” What differentiates Stern from those who have followed is her honest voice, humor (her posts on Facebook are the funniest you will see in your day), empathy, and heart. “After this year, I think encouraging compassion and kindness is so important. People are suffering in so many ways,” says Stern. “Thankfully, love and care are contagious, too. And it’s so easy. Make a call. Write an email. Send a care package. Volunteer. Spread messages of hope and passivity online. Put that love out into the world. You’ll be surprised how quickly it comes back to you.” Lyssten to Lyss and choose gratitude! LAKE TAHOE

SHEER, BLUE, CLEAN & REFRESHING By Isabelle Reynolds

ost people don’t know it, but there are two distinct parts of Lake Tahoe: The South Shore and the North. Both have easy access to the magnificent freshwater lake, but the south is saturated with casinos and bars, and the north is more laid back, with fewer people and more of a mountain-vibe. This story is about the North, where there’s truly something for everyone, from hiking and biking to birding, and amazing dining. And, of course, plenty of swimming. “While North Lake Tahoe offers a wide variety of activities and experiences, it continues to be imperative that guests follow the health and safety guidelines our businesses must adhere to in order to stay open,” said Jeffrey Hentz, North Lake Tahoe Resort Association CEO. “Our mountain community has demonstrated its resilience and determination over the last year, and it’s up to all of us to continue to support them in their efforts to stay open.” As for COVID precautions, GoTahoeNorth.com has all the up-to-date information you’ll need to know before you go. Bonus! Jet Blue has resumed its direct flights from JFK to Reno, about a 45-minute drive from North Lake Tahoe. So, there’s no reason not to add Lake Tahoe on your bucket list.

West Shore Café & Inn is one of the most romantic hotels and offers four elegant mountain-inspired guest suites and two classic mountain-inspired guest rooms. The property overlooks Lake Tahoe on one side, and the mountains on the other. The hotel recently underwent a $250,000 remodeling, including new hardwood floors in each room, carpet through common areas, a new HVAC system allowing better airflow throughout the property, updated light fixtures, and 4k Smart TV’s. All rooms are amazing, but our favorite is the Marlette Peak Suite, a one-bedroom with two bathrooms with shower and tub, two fireplaces, and verandas with prime lake views. Coffee and tea are offered in the lobby every morning, and the hotel will provide guests with continental breakfast delivered to your room each morning. For dinner, you can dine inside or outside at the café, with a seasonal menu and world-class wines. Be sure to visit the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion (also known as Pine Lodge), a summer home built in 1903 in a grove of pine and cedar. From the turn of the century until 1965, the lands of what is now Ed Z’berg - Sugar Pine Point State Park were owned by financier Isaias W. Hellman, and later by his daughter Florence Hellman Ehrman. The Stillwater Spa and Salon has fabulous treatments; after, you can try your luck at the on-site casino. While you’re here, enjoy a walk along the East Shore Trail. THE NORTH FORK

LONG ISLAND’S NEWEST RENAISSANCE By Kristen Oliveri

he North Fork was once the hidden gem of Long Island’s East End. Known most prominently for its wineries, farms, and its agri-tainment business—a term fondly used for harvest festivals and outdoor farming activities—this region is embracing a new-age renaissance. Many city dwellers, hospitality, food, and beverage veterans have left busier lives behind to seek solace in the land and sea while hanging a few new shingles up in the North Fork along the way. Others who have ties to longtime North Fork businesses have rebranded iconic brands to reach a wider audience and pivot businesses to allow for flexible experiences in our new world.

EN ROUTE If you’re planning a trip to the North Fork by car, plan to stop at Waterdrinker Family Farm & Garden in Manorville along the way. This family-owned and operated farm hosts two major festivals throughout the year, including a tulip and sunflower festival. Other roadside farm stands beckon visitors with their fresh bounty in summer months and worthy of countless pitstops. Those seeking pies can choose between Briermere Farms, Wickham Fruit Farm, or Country View Farm Stand, and ice cream fanatics can head straight for the berry-based treats at Patty’s Berries and Bunches.

Briermere Farm

SIP & SAVOR Newly re-opened Peconic Bay Winery, led by owner Stacey Soloviev and general manager Ken Cereola, offers a variety of options for summer guests. This hospitality-forward winery opened its doors to the public in mid-May along with a farm stand on property that provides oysters from Harvest Moon Shellfish, wine, local beer, flowers, and dozens of locally produced items. The owners are deeply connected to giving back and working with the North Fork community, so much so that one Thursday a month, they donate their property to CAST (Community Action Southold Town) for their drive-in movie nights. Terra Vite Winery and Vineyard, formerly Diliberto Vineyards, opened its doors this past Memorial Day weekend with new owners and North Fork natives Greg and Jacqui Goodale. The winery has joined forces with Little Ram Oysters to launch a dedicated oyster bar on property that offers shucked oysters on the half shell along with a rotating selection of their signature mignonettes and additional shellfish specials. Terra Vite is hosting a “brine and wine” — a stepby-step oyster shucking class including a hands-on demonstration and a curated wine pairing on the third Thursday of each month, running from mid-June through November. If destination dining is on your list, be sure to include a visit to The Windamere restaurant in Mattituck on the grounds of Strong’s Marina. This fourth-generation family business has expanded its hospitality capabilities beyond its marina and water club with the launch of its year-round restaurant. Chef Bruce Miller curates the waterfront dining experience. He caters to both the local community and visitors looking to immerse themselves in the local cuisine of the North Fork. With its renovations complete, the restaurant offers a variety of outdoor dining options, including formal dining, an outdoor bar with craft cocktails, and casual picnic tables for grab-and-go items and small bites that are perfect for child-friendly meals out. TEATIME Looking for a reprieve from the wineries? Be sure to book an afternoon tea at Special Effects Salon & Tea House in Greenport, a perfect stop for a lady’s lunch, spa day, or a quick tea or coffee break. The mother and daughter team of Debbie and Victoria Schade are continuing to evolve their offering at the salon and tea house with the addition of a permanent tea stand. Visitors can swing by for a casual cup of tea or coffee and spend time outdoors playing board games or snagging the perfect East End photo op. In addition to serving a formal high tea six days a week, Special Effects offers exclusive private tea parties for small groups outdoors. In addition, there are curated art shows every other Thursday throughout the summer, complete with live music.

STAY

Aqua Beach

While the North Fork is well known for its quaint B&B scene, a few boutique hotels offer a wonderful alternative for lodging. The Aqua Beach Hotel by American Beech Group is a refurbished motel transformed into a smallscale resort designed by Alex Vinash. This Aquebogue-based hotel has recently unveiled its two beachfront suites with oversized, luxurious bathtubs. Guests of the hotel have access to the private beach as well as the property’s dockside lawn and garden, complete with a lounge area, beach chaises, hammocks, and croquet. Another great option is the Lin Beach House in Greenport that offers chic, retrofitted rooms within an old Victorian home in the heart of the North Fork.

PACK A PICNIC Another great thing to do while visiting the North Fork is to have a leisurely summer picnic. Whether on a beach, boat or in a backyard, many places create custom, local experiences. A North Fork Affair offers full lunch and dinner spreads (paired with wine and dessert) that are ready for at-home, boat, or beach picnic outings. Another great option is Lombardi’s Love Lane Market in Mattituck, where caterer Lauren Lombardi can whip up everything from meat and cheese platters to custom meals like a decadent, gourmet macaroni, and cheese. And tucked right around the corner from Lombardi’s is Agora The Little Greek Market. Be sure to pepper your picnic basket with homemade, ready-to-eat spanakopita, imported cheeses and olives, bite-sized baklava, and other Greek baked goods. Once that basket is complete, head to one of the North Fork’s countless beaches (Kenney’s or South Harbor, to name only a few) and breathe in the stillness and immeasurable beauty of the land and the sea. If time allows, stay to watch the sunset. You’ll thank me later. For more information on Long Island’s North Fork, visit discoverlongisland.com. • 44 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

WINVIAN FARM

NATURAL BEAUTY IN NEARBY LITCHFIELD By Irvina Lew

ven as the world feels more secure regarding pandemic precautions, most of us prefer traveling close to home, avoiding crowded places and knowing that the venue maintains all safety measures. Winvian Farm is perfect for the times; it’s an exceptionally idyllic Relais & Chateaux affiliate in pristine Litchfield Hills, about 100 miles (a two-hour drive) from the Upper East Side. At Winvian, each of the eighteen unique cottages on the 113acre working farm was designed by one of fifteen architects who let their creative-spirit soar, took advantage of bucolic woodland or pastoral views and/or incorporated sustainable elements, such as natural stone, reused barn beams and trees, in the individualized structures.

Beaver Lodge

WHAT’S YOUR WISH? What are your druthers? A rustic log cabin? A treehouse, greenhouse or lighthouse? Mark Twain’s book Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court inspired a medieval cottage, and an authentic beaver dam is installed as an over-the-bed centerpiece at Beaver Lodge. Five lodgings are dog friendly; three are clustered for couples traveling together; and, one, Camping Cottage, is handicap accessible. Colonial history buffs choose the nineteenth accommodation, the Hadley Suite, a three-room, second-floor suite in the original 18th-century Connecticut clapboard Seth Bird house. The Spa

RELAX & RENEW I chose Stone Cottage, with its bold and beautiful boulder walls and two wood burning fireplaces, that rise to the cathedral ceiling and divide the living room from the bedroom; a wall of upper windows views the forest, even from the deep, jettedtub and the oversized tiled shower, with its long bench.

While each cottage has its singular character; all offer comparable comforts: a gracious size, from 900 to 1250-square-feet; radiant-heated bathroom floors; double vanities; an oversize Jacuzzi tub; a two-person rainfall steam shower; a screened porch; bikes at the doorstep; and convenient parking.

The raised two-steps-up sleeping area, features a huge, custom-crafted bed facing the fireplace with a thick, plankedwood headboard, a horizontal board that extends out to create side tables and a wide, foot board/bench. Alongside it, the wet bar features a stone sink installed within a boulder and a custom-crafted desk. The amenities are typical to all accommodations: an ice maker and refrigerator, a Nespresso coffee maker, Harney & Sons tea service, a hair dryer, lighted make-up mirror, iron and two umbrellas. The 5000-square foot, stand-alone spa uses reclaimed barn beams, steel and metal. Rebecca, my talented aesthetician, greeted me at reception, showed me the large, window-walled lounge and led me to the ladies’ locker room and one of the six treatment rooms. Two among them house twin massage tables, wood-burning fireplaces, with seating, plus French doors. Skin treatments incorporate high-end French facial products, either Biologique Recherche or Yonka, (which I have long favored and which Rebecca incorporated into my moisturizing facial).

A DINING PLEASURE Dinner is at a gastronomic level worthy of its AAA Five-Diamond restaurant status. Executive Chef Chris Eddy, a protégé of two of my favored Michelin-starred chefs, Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boulud, serves upscale farm-to-table cuisine, with housemade items sourced from produce grown on the property’s three-acre, four greenhouse working farm, which supplies the kitchen for about 70 percent of the year. The wine list offers 350 labels and the prix-fixe menu includes three choices each for appetizers, entrées and desserts. The menu stars the best regional ingredients. Chef ’s Amuse Bouche was an extraordinary smooth paté atop a grilled bruschetta served with a mini-cup of sun-choke purée with a crunchy topping. My friend and I ordered identically: a house-made Garganelli “all’Astiche,” a tubular, ridged, egg pasta topped with chunks of tender, poached Maine Lobster and Tenderloin of Beef and shared three creamy desserts: a Winvian Tiramisu, with mascarpone-coffee filling within lady fingers; a Chocolate Mousse with Caramel, and a Vanilla Chantilly. Breakfast the next morning arrived with fresh berries served on a plank with house-made croissants, apple bread, jam and homemade butter. My golden omelet was filled with red peppers, mushrooms, and cheddar, instead of mozzarella, and topped with fresh herbs. Did I mention that the gracious staff is very helpful? And, there are a multitude of activities: private cooking lessons; wine tastings, fencing, yoga, croquet and seasonal swimming and hot air balloon rides. There’s biking and hiking on property and in the adjacent, 4000-acre White Memorial Foundation park.

IF YOU GO There’s helicopter and charter flight service, but most guests drive; if you don’t, take Metro North to Waterbury, CT (2 hours 20 minutes) and ask Winvian to arrange for the 20-minute car service transfer. Then, reserve access to their Volvo 2020, with or without a chauffeur, for local sightseeing. For more information on Winvian Farm, visit winvian.com. •

DRIVING LITCHFIELD HILLS The unspoiled scenery along the curvy, rural roads in the Litchfield Hills are a delightful place to wander; plus, these country roads lead to magical places: browse the Village Green (Litchfield); shop for antiques and go to a brewery (Kent); visit the Institute for American Indian Studies and go bird watching (Washington); taste wines at Hopkins Vineyard Winery or shop at J. Seitz (New Preston); plantshop or enjoy 10-acre gardens at White Flower Farm (Morris) or attend a chamber music concert (Norfolk). If need be, there are more affordable accommodations, close enough to take advantage of Winvian’s Spa and fine dining.

U.S. NATIONAL PARKS

GET BACK TO NATURE AT ONE (OR TWO) OF THESE BEAUTIES By Patricia Canole

ditor’s Note: Travelers should check local government restrictions, rules, and safety and take personal comfort levels and health conditions into consideration before departure. Also, check the U.S. National Parks Service website to see updates on closure of trails and some renovations.

Everglades National Park

Year after year, millions flock to America’s 62 national parks to bask in the country’s incredible natural beauty. The diverse collection spans dramatic canyons to vast deserts and verdant valleys with a range of activities from sea to shining sea. The choice is all yours. To start you on your adventure, here are some Eastern beauties. Everglades National Park

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK Florida “Here are no lofty peaks seeking the sky, no mighty glaciers or rushing streams…Here is land, tranquil in its quiet beauty.” So said President Harry S Truman as he described the Everglades and made nearby Key West his summer White House. Visitors can immerse themselves in the legendary River of Grass, admire 1.5 million acres of tropical and subtropical habitat, and chance an encounter with several endangered species. Two drive-in campsites for both tents and RVs are available in the park, along with many backcountry sites. There are no lodges or restaurants, however. An airboat tour of the park is a sure thrill. Hikers can walk along such popular self-guided trails as the Gumbo Limbo Trail, Anhinga Trail, and Mahogany Hammock. With over a million visitors each year, the park’s crowd factor can be a bit overwhelming, so you’ll want to plan your trip well in advance. JUNE 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 51

DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK If you’re looking for solitude, then Dry Tortugas National Park is the place. With only 60,000 visitors a year, this is the place to get away from it all. Seventy miles west of Key West, the only access to this park is ferry, seaplane, or chartered boat. A cluster of islands and their surrounding water is called the Dry Tortugas, aptly named Tortugas (Spanish for turtles) for the five types of turtles that inhabit the islands. The most famous sight, and open for tours, is Fort Jefferson, a fortress built in the 1800s and touted as one of the most significant structures in the Western Hemisphere with over 16 million bricks. What else to do? Enjoy the park’s unparalleled beauty and white powder sand. You can swim, sunbathe on its white powder sand, snorkel, dive, birdwatch, kayak or have your adventure and camp out on the mostly uninhabited Garden Key island.

Dry Tortugas National Park

SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK

Shenandoah National Park

Virginia Just a quick trip from the nation’s capital, these 196,000 acres of historic mountain landscape are where most D.C. locals go to unwind and catch a breath of fresh air. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains from 75 overlooks along the 105-mile scenic Skyline Drive, go fishing in one of 70 pristine mountain streams, or take your pick of over 500 miles of hiking trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Park highlights include the Rapidan Camp, President Hoover’s Summer White House, Hawksbill Mountain (the highest point in the park), and Dark Hollow Falls, a popular walk to a 70-foot waterfall. Accommodations are plentiful: Lodges, cabins, and campgrounds accommodate nearly 1.5 million annual visitors.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK North Carolina/Tennessee Most people assume that the country’s flagship western parks, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon, attract the most crowds. But it’s the Great Smoky Mountains that top the charts as the most-visited national park. Why do so many people love these mountains? Well, there are dozens of reasons that make this 522,419-acre stretch of magnificent wilderness. First and foremost, the park is within easy distance to several towns and major cities in North Carolina and Tennessee. For variety, the park has over 800 miles of hiking trails, 2,900 miles of fishing streams, several geological wonders, cascading waterfalls, and ample wildlife, not to mention the 70 miles of the worldfamous Appalachian Trail. Each autumn, the park puts on a majestic display of foliage, with the hillsides painted in vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. And if that’s not enough, the nation’s most treasured park offers free admission. That’s right—you can drive right in. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

CAPE COD NATIONAL SEASHORE Massachusetts A 40-mile strip of dunes, Cape Cod National Seashore has enjoyed federal protection since 1961, thanks to longtime son John F. Kennedy. Thankfully, precious little has changed. And to quote author Henry David Thoreau who roamed the area in the 1850s, it’s a place where “a man can stand and put all America behind him.” From Chatham in the south to artsy Provincetown at its northern tip, the solitary seashore of wide, open beaches, lighthouses, big waves, and rippling dune grass is one of America’s most magnificent—over 43,000 acres of dramatic high dunes, sea, and an everchanging play of light. Getting there will put you on Route 6A, a winding two-lane highway that runs for 65 miles through the Cape and has been described as one of the most scenic drives around, passing through old New England towns, with no shortage of resorts, hotels, B&Bs, and plenty of restaurants on the long stretch.

Cape Cod National Seashore

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park

Maine Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Boston, Acadia National Park, aptly nicknamed the crown jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, protects more than 47,000 acres of rocky headlands along the Main coastline. It offers the chance to hike the top of Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak in the North Atlantic: dip your toes in the sand at Sand Beach, and, of course, delivers a healthy dose of autumn vibes—all in a single day. Despite its smaller acreage from the other parks on this list, Acadia offers some of the best hiking trails on the East Coast. While the park lacks backcountry camping accommodation and other amenities, nearby Bar Harbor makes up for it with a wealth of restaurants and places to stay. The park’s biggest drawback is its popularity. Over 3.5 million people visit the park annually, so road congestion and crowding are common during the peak season of June to September. The National Park Service had to close the road to Cadillac Mountain summit, the park’s most popular attraction, 49 times in 2017. So, don’t forget to pack your patience. BOOKWELL TRAVEL

PAYING-IT-FORWARD DURING TRYING TIMES By Seth Paul

ast year, when the pandemic hit, Brian Gates—founder of Bookwell Travel—recognized a need to help the community. His stance has always been to be involved and support your neighbor. So, when the director of Always Home, an at-risk youth shelter, reached out to Brian for help feeding its residents during such trying times, he was happy to help. Even though his own business was forced to close, he happily brought his kitchen staff back and cooked for Always Home for some three months. He was able to provide enough meals so that no one went hungry. Doing this had a significant impact on Brian and the whole team at the luxurious Spicer Mansion, which he owns and operates in Mystic, CT. He then spent the next few months putting together a network for partners that all shared his philanthropic views. As a hotelier, he also recognized the need for a business that supports boutique properties and has its best business practices in mind. Brian wanted to create a solution that eliminates those issues. Hence, the birth of Bookwell. During the shutdown, while many businesses were forced to close, Bookwell Travel hit the ground running. Bookwell Travel’s mission is to provide a first-class, personalized booking experience for travelers while partnering with properties that share the commitment to delivering exceptional service and the mission to feed the less fortunate. For every night booked, they donate 20 meals to help feed the less fortunate. To date, they have donated 641,500 meals along the Eastern seaboard and a goal of 16 million meals by the end of 2021. “The hospitality industry was built on the idea of service with a smile. But that is fast becoming a thing of the past. Hotel corporations and impersonal booking sites leave customers with fewer choices and even less control, compromising the user experience for bigger profits. People today are demanding more quality for their dollar and more social goods from their brands. Bookwell Travel delivers on both.” says Gates. Want to know how you can do your part? It’s simple, visit BookwellTravel.com and visit the millions of properties that are on the platform. Here, you will find properties available through their partnership with Booking.com on Bookwell All Travel or the boutique properties available through Bookwell Boutique Travel. They have the destination for you. • 54 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

CARA WOODHOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN’S RISING STAR By Patricia Canole

uxury designer Cara Woodhouse has always had an eye for interior design. While studying interior design at the New York School of Interior Design, she was already working at smaller firms. She started her full-service company, Cara Woodhouse Interiors, in 2016, securing a number of residential and commercial projects. She calls her business mode a client-first approach, focusing on perfecting spaces for clients with an eye for ease. One of Woodhouse’s talents is her unique, out-of-the-box designs for pieces as form, function, and symmetry. She combines luxurious comfort with unsurpassed customer service, and having lived in New York, Los Angeles, and London, brings a combination of all that worldly knowledge to each project. Here, she lets us in on her design inspiration and vision for the future. What is unique about your work as a designer? We consider ourselves luxury interior design innovators with a practice in high-end interior design for residential and commercial clients. Presently, we are working on some fantastic residential projects nationally and starting to break out into product design as well! We’re having a great time foraying into product design. It’s a passion! 56 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

Cara Woodhouse

What does good design mean to you? Good design is about being playful and taking risks. I always try to push myself to try and do something different and try another angle to design something. When people say this is the only way to do this, I love to push back and say there are no design rules. Let’s explore! This is how I approach creating something a bit different. What do you see in your daily life that inspires your sense of design? I get my inspiration from everywhere! From other designers, architects, and artists for sure! I’m a huge fan of traveling, and I always take away design inspiration from the cultures and people I meet. What’s your favorite trend in home design right now? Interior bar rooms are making a huge comeback. This is something that you would find in homes back in the ’50s and ’60s. Everyone is either including a bar room in their newly built homes or converting an unused room in their home for the ultimate bar room! I love the idea of a home bar. How do you find those creatives—artists, furniture makers, fabric designers—to keep your company current? I consider myself to be the queen of researching! I can go down some crazy work holes on-line between Pinterest and Instagram! How does your home design reflect your aesthetic? My own home is such a reflection of me and my style. I have a soothing tonal base feel with lots of “eye candy,” as I like to call it. I do that in interesting pieces of furniture, wallpaper, and pops of color. Tell us about any unusual or comical moments you’ve experienced as a designer? Oh my! I could write a book! Unfortunately, even my unusual and comical moments must be kept confidential! Is there a perfect mix of talent and personality that’s required to create a successful project? Absolutely! I feel like you must possess talent and experience in this business. But it’s personality that makes a perfect marriage with your client work! Have there been any special projects that stand out? I hold every project I work on dear to my heart. They are all so special to me. What’s the one piece of advice you’d give readers for designing their home? Art is the finishing touch to every space. Without art, things feel unfinished and bare. I think art is a crucial part of designing and is a place to tell a story and evoke a feeling. It is a place to show your personality, and humor as well. THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS INVESTING IN YOUR SECOND HOME By Rico Garcia

ew places in the Caribbean offer US real estate investors as much as the British Virgin Islands. As travelers already know, this little slice of heaven is the perfect getaway to soak up the sun and enjoy its many beaches. Best of all, we are a short half-day away! More recently, however, the the BVI has become an ideal second home destination for the new wave of baby boomers who are into retirement. Or, for the slightly younger professional, it’s one of the perks in life: Owning luxurious real estate in an idyllic setting like the BVI. The BVI tax rates are one of the lowest in the world since the tax structure eliminates Profit, Capital Gains, Wealth, Inheritance, Gift, and Dividends taxes. (There are, however, payroll and land tax.) We use the US dollar, which makes for much smoother transactions with Americans. The age of the average buyer is 50 + who are primarily high net-worth individuals.

ISLAND HOPPING The main islands for luxury real estate transactions are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. In Virgin Gorda, you can find developments and communities like Mahoe Bay, where you can find Aquamare ($19,800,000), Crooks Bay (Bay House: $3,500,000), and Oil Nut Bay (Marina Villa: $3,950,000). Tortola has a higher population but offers the same tranquility along its coastlines, where you can find attractive real estate in neighborhoods like Trunk Bay (Vill Kai: $3,500,000), Hawks Nest (Hawks Nest Villa: $,1,200,000), Long Bay (Silver Palms: $2,150,000) and Belmont (Villa Rosa $1,950,000). I’ve been fortunate enough to serve the BVI market for several years now. I find it exciting to be able to share my home with others. We are backed by the RE/MAX brand and enjoy the BVI as much as the many visitors that come here every year. The BVI is a 10-minute chartered flight or 30-minute boat ride from the US Virgin Islands. It can also be reached easily in 25 minutes from Puerto Rico as the second leg of a trip. Purchasing real estate in the BVI consistently holds its value and is an excellent store of wealth. Most affluent property owners buy with equity or pay cash, so there are very few foreclosures in the BVI luxury market. THE SUCCESSFUL PURCHASE WHAT’S IT TAKES TO BUY THAT DREAM HOME By AP Connolly

uying a home is much more in-depth than seeing, signing, and closing. A successful real estate transaction has many steps, with different professionals each playing a pivotal role. Buyers focus on the dream, brokers work to advance the transaction to the satisfaction of the buyers and sellers, and attorneys cross the proverbial t’s and dot the i’s to ensure that all interests are protected. When these three roles come together, the City hums with excitement. They provide a unique perspective and essential insight into the deals that bring cities to life and make cities move. We met up with real estate attorney Michael J. Romer, the managing partner of Romer Debbas LLP and principal of New York Real Estate Center, and residential real estate veteran and Brown Harris Stevens top producing agent Scott Harris on Talking New York, a weekly deep dive into the New York Real Estate market. Both Harris and Romer have shared a few insights from each of their unique vantage points. Although their roles and responsibilities vary throughout the real estate transactional process, they both use their position and welcome the opportunity to keep their clients informed and educated on market conditions. Together, they highlight the following tips for buyers.

Scott Harris

Buyers are proceeding with urgency. As pent-up demand and excess inventory collided, the sentiment of early 2021 was, “Let’s get this apartment into contract. I don’t want to lose it!” Manhattan residential sales had surged to unprecedented levels, higher than anything the City had seen in over 14 years. There’s little renegotiation. By and large, sellers are getting their price, and there is movement at all price points. On the new development side, concessions are being offered, and buyers who signed contracts pre-pandemic are moving ahead with closings. Harris and Romer see properties at the $3 million and under mark moving quite quickly, as is expected for that price. However, Romer is pleased to see that the higher end of the market—specifically $7 million and up—is garnering attention and gaining momentum, further proving confidence in New York City and reinforcing the enduring value of the real estate. Remain up-to-date. All eyes remain on the proposed increase to Capital Gains, the continuance of SALT, and the elimination of 1031 Exchange provisions introduced by President Biden in late April. If passed, these changes could have far-reaching implications. Residential and commercial real estate has long been a leading economic driver. Increased tax rates coupled with decreased deductions could leave small and large investors closely scrutinizing their investment returns.

Michael Romer

New York City always recovers. Similar to how the real estate industry works together, so does New York City. Just as we saw the Manhattan community come together after 9/11, Romer and Harris agreed we see this same community mentality today in the market. With client service and professionalism informing all interactions, the pros also discussed the importance of agent education and the launch of the New York Real Estate Center. Although the plans for NYRE Center pre-dated the pandemic, the March 2020 availability of an online platform proved to be incredibly timely. NYRE Center provided a forum for agents to remain connected and engaged while satisfying continuing education requirements.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WALK YOUR WAY TO FITNESS By Patricia Canole

ost New Yorkers may think they’re experts when it comes to walking. After all, we are known as the best city for walking. But besides getting from Point A to Point B, walking is the best heart-healthy exercise going. Here, short advice on long-term benefits. With season temps rising, it’s perfect for trying one or all on your next stroll around town.

10,000 STEPS You may have heard you need to aim for 10,000 steps each day to get fit. But how did this originate? It all began in Japan during the 1960s, when Yoshiro Hatano, Ph.D., tracked habitually active walkers. His team determined that the average man burned 300 calories by approximately walking 10,000 steps. And so manpo-kei (“10,000 steps meter”) was born, otherwise known as the pedometer. Of course, most of us use an app on our phones which is even more convenient. Today, most experts agree the number is a bit arbitrary. Nevertheless, counting steps is essential. Keep in mind the number of steps depends on your aim. The rule of thumb: Walk as much as you can whenever you can. You know it has health benefits—so why not just do it?

TRIM YOUR WAISTLINE Lack of exercise and sitting around and not moving? No one is immune from adding those pandemic pounds. If you’ve noticed an increasing midriff bulge, a regular daily brisk walk can help get you back in shape. With a steady regular walking schedule, you will have flatter abs in no time. The critical thing to remember is your technique for walking should be correct. Hold your head up, looking straight ahead, not at the ground. Keep your neck, shoulders, and back relaxed. Walking with stiffness will be very tiring and leave you sore afterward. Breathe deeply as you walk and enjoy nature’s beauty and what’s around you.

REDUCE STIFF JOINTS If you walk for 30 to 60 minutes every day, you will get the best natural arthritis pain relief. Walking helps reduce inflammation and stiffness in your joints. When you first start, go at a slower pace and gradually build up to walking faster and longer. You will feel great.

MANAGE YOUR BP It has been reported that a daily walk can lower blood pressure naturally. Many of us may claim we don’t have time to do 30- or 45-minute walks each day. Good news! Studies now show that several 10-minute brisk walks can be as helpful as one long walk. Walk in the morning for 10 minutes; take a 10-minute stroll at lunchtime, and then again in the evening. 64 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

A STRESS-BUSTER Mental stress is a problem for most of us these days. Because there are so many things to deal with, is it any wonder you may feel distracted. Take a break from what you are doing. Research shows that a brisk 20- to 30-minute walk every day can reduce mental stress. It is said to have the same effect as a mild tranquilizer.

CUT BREAST CANCER RISKS Walking, even for a few hours a week, significantly reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, walking helps lower body fat levels, a source of estrogen. The research looked at seven post-menopausal women and found those at a healthy weight lowered their risk by 30 percent while those who were overweight, by 10 to 20 percent.

BETTER SLEEP According to the National Sleep Foundation, a brisk walk will help you get a better night’s sleep. Walking boosts levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, which relaxes you. The rise in body heat brought on by walking may, in turn, signal the brain to lower your temperature later, which promotes sleep.

DO IT RIGHT

PROTECT BONES

By now, you realize that walking is good for your heart, burns calories, and helps you stay young. Here’s how to make it fun and part of your daily routine. • Arm Yourself Borrow this simple move from Olympic champions. Bend arms to 90-degree angles and swing them as you walk. Correct arm positioning plays a vital role in how fast you walk, and the quicker you walk, the more calories you burn.

Just 30 minutes of walking three times a week will do wonders for your bones. This type of exercise, which uses 95 percent of your muscles, push your bones to become stronger so they can handle the load. Walking is not just for cardio.

• Walk A Hound, Lose A Pound Studies show that walking a pet dog is beneficial to your health (and your pet, too!) No pet? Then volunteer to walk dogs at an animal shelter! Doing this daily routine not only alleviates depression but trims your waistline as well.

LIVE LONGER

• Mix It Up Alternating short stints of fast walking and mediumrecovery periods is a wonderful way to burn calories without adding time to your workout. Try the “talk test” to judge your effort: during the short bouts of fast walking, talking should be challenging; more comfortable during recovery.

Studies show that daily walks will extend your life as well as make you feel better. There are so many benefits to walking that it can’t help but extend and improve your life. You will be able to move more freely for a lot longer. •

OCEAN PRIME NYC SURF + TURF AT ITS BEST By Patricia Canole

ne of the city’s best steakhouses is best known for seafood. It’s true. Amidst the offerings at this national chain are top-notch dry-aged steaks and fresh-off-the-boat seafood fare. And unlike most similar establishments, Ocean Prime dares to be big and bold, flaunting its modern chic with sexy swagger. This is no surprise with a desirable Midtown location. The night my guest and I dined at the West 52nd location, I was happy to see that Ocean Prime New York City had a healthy variety of salads on the menu. The Signature Salad combines romaine and other greens, tossed with plenty of thinly sliced apple, goat cheese crumbles, and walnut, bound together with a sherry mustard vinaigrette. Another favorite is the Shellfish Cobb Salad, littered with shrimp, lobster, crab, bacon, and blue cheese tossed in a lemon dressing. Or perhaps it’s sushi you’re craving—and trust me, there are plenty of choices. We loved the Tempura Fried Spicy Tuna with cucumber and scallion, which added zing to every bite. Other appetizers are typical steakhouse standards: A Jumbo Lump Crab Cake served with horseradish mustard aioli and White Truffle Caviar Deviled Eggs. 66 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

Shellfish

A MIX OF MEMORABLE FLAVORS The entrees are divided into three categories—steak, chicken and lamb, and seafood. And the options here are plentiful. Try the Twin Lobster Tails with asparagusdrawn butter. Its mix of flavors makes it a memorable dish. Another standout was Sea Scallops with parmesan risotto, English peas, and citrus vinaigrette. Tender and so flavorful. Also of note are the great side dishes. We recommend their Black Truffle Mac ‘n Cheese, which needs no explanation here, as this combo of flavors is splendid. Desserts are decadent! Please don’t leave without sampling the 10-Layer Carrot Cake or Chocolate-Peanut Butter Pie, And much like Ocean Prime itself, the desserts are big on flavor. Service is intelligent, prompt, and knowing. There’s a good wine list curated by General Manager and Certified Sommelier Kevin Flannery. He brings a keen eye for service and provides diners an excellent selection of by-the-glass options, including some premium pours. Cocktails are a strength here with the show-stopper Berries & Bubbles, a vodka and sparkling wine drink with berries and enough dry ice to keep the cocktail smoking for 10 minutes or more. Less showy is the solid Woodford Reserve Manhattan.

Prime Roll

MORE EXPERIENCES The restaurant’s name says it all: prime, along with an upscale ambiance providing a sophisticated experience unequaled. Ocean Prime also offers a great place to meet friends and colleagues. Take a seat in a comfy booth or at the sleek white marble bar. Sip on a hand-crafted cocktail or enjoy a glass of wine from the awardwinning wine list. Snack on Sushi, Ceviche, Lamb Lollipops, Prime Sliders, or Oysters from the raw bar. In addition to Ocean Prime New York City, there are 15 other Ocean Primes to enjoy around the country. For more information on Ocean Prime New York City, visit ocean-prime.com. •

Filet and Scampi

THE MAN BEHIND OCEAN PRIME Ocean Prime New York City restaurant is one of many Cameron Mitchell Restaurants located coast to coast. It all began in a humble place—the kitchen of his mother. And it was where he mapped out his career goals which would eventually set the course for his restaurant career. After hitting a glass ceiling at a now-defunct restaurant in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, Cameron was more than ready to pursue his dream of running his own restaurant company. In 1993, he opened a storefront property tucked in the northwest corner of Columbus. The space would be transformed into his first restaurant, Cameron’s. This contemporary American bistro wowed Columbus diners with its diverse flavors selected from across the American culinary landscape as well as its extraordinary attention to service. Cameron’s was a notable success, especially when considering Columbus’ highly competitive restaurant business climate. Among the raving fans were investors and developers, who were hungry for more. It did not take long for Cameron to diversify and expand, discovering he had a gift for developing winning restaurant concepts in the process. The company that started in the kitchen began to run the table with a string of successes.

The masterful score takes ballet music to a height of passion, sophistication, and intensity that arguably has never been surpassed.

GHOSTS

KINKY BOOTS

Ibsen’s Ghosts attracted controversy at its premiere for its scathing commentary on 19th-century societal norms. It deals with subjects such as religion, incest, and euthanasia, and most shockingly at the time, venereal disease. This production, captured by Digital Theatre live at London’s Trafalgar Studios, was directed by Richard Eyre and Stars Lesley Manville, in a highly praised performance, as Helene Alvina. It won three Olivier Awards: Lesley Manville for Best Actress and Jack Lowden for Best Actor in a Supporting role and Best Revival.

Inspired by true events, the Tony, Grammy, and Olivierwinning musical Kinky Boots tells the story of two people with nothing in common—or so they think. Charlie (played by Olivier Award nominee Killian Donnelly) is a factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola (played by Matt Henry, who won an Olivier Award for the role) is a fabulous entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. With a little compassion and a lot of understanding, the unexpected pair learn to embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy stilettos, unlike any the world has ever seen! With music by the incomparable Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is sure to raise you up!

A true classic of American musical theater, this tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of racism’s bitter legacy. Director Francesca Zambello’s grand-scale production is “a triumph-a stylish, fast-paced and colorful show that had the capacity audience on its feet, cheering loud and long” (Chicago Classical Review).

There’s nothing quite like going to the movies with family and friends! BIG SCREEN THRILLS, CHILLS AND FAST CARS A QUIET PLACE PART II PG-13 We’ve all been waiting to find out what happens to the Abbott family after losing their patriarch to the murderous alien life forms in the first film. This one’s all about a demonic possession of a young boy. F9 PG-13 Just for the sound alone see F9, which is the ninth iteration of the Fast & Furious franchise. Add in the crazy driving visuals and this might just need to be the first flick you see back on the big screen. Jackson return in this comical action sequel to their 2017 Hitman hit, adding Salma Hayek as Jackson’s unpredictable con artist wife. All three end up going against bad guy Antonio Banderas. THE MISFITS R It’s a wild ride from SoCal to Abu Dhabi as an escaped con (Pierce Brosnan) finds himself in the hands of The Misfits, a gang of dogooders who go to extreme measures to lift a fortune from some very bad people. There’s lots of action, exotic scenery and more in this fast-moving flick that also stars Nick Cannon, Jamie Chung, Hermione Corfield, and Tim Roth.

FAMILY OUTINGS 12 MIGHTY ORPHANS PG-13 Take the tweeners along to experience this cinematic true story of a high-school team made up of Fort Worth orphans who changed the way football is played. Set during the Great Depression, this real-life tale centers on Rusty Russell (Luke Wilson), the coach who takes the team to the Texas state championships. Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Lane Garrison and Jake Austin Walker also star. PETER RABBIT 2: THE RUNAWAY PG Peter Rabbit is back (after his first appearance in the 2018 hit movie named after him) in this bouncy mix of animation and live action. Then Peter gets some of his mischievous ideas and the trouble— and laughter—begins! James Corden, Margot Robbie, and Elizabeth Debicki lend their voices to the rabbit hutch. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER CRAIG SANDERS, FOUNDER OF HELPEN By Bailey Beckett

n such an extreme time, when messages about community, hope, and compassion are lost to news about disease, politics, and social unrest, how can parents instill the values in their kids they do not see in the media? A new program called HELPEN, created by New York-based entrepreneur Craig Sanders, is looking to fill that void. His concept bridges families to worthy non-profits through a fun game, voice-assisted learning, and life skills designed to shape kids into the next generation of leaders. Realizing children are in their most crucial development period between ages 2 and 9, HELPEN uses that time frame to expose kids to examples of charity, community, and selflessness. Sanders, a Kansas native, attended Boston University, where he walked on to the men’s hockey team and eventually played overseas in Amsterdam and Australia. He later pursued a career in bond trading, which he credits with teaching him risk management and decision-making skills. During that time, he began fundraising for non-profits like the Travis Roy Foundation and the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation, all Boston-based organizations with strong ties to the New England hockey communities. That was the beginning. Sanders came up with the idea for HELPEN while applying to Harvard Business School. Although he wasn’t accepted, the process led him to examine his own life story and how experiences from his upbringing helped determine his life path. 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

ROOTED IN KINDNESS “HELPEN is a program designed to empower kids to learn, give and understand the positive consequences of actions rooted in kindness,” explains Sanders. “In such a formative time in their lives, showing kids the power of generosity is an important part of them developing into responsible, aware, and selfless individuals. HELPEN is about providing an experience that will help shape the next generation into the empathetic and generous leaders of tomorrow.” The concept is simple: Every week, HELPEN sends postcards to parents listing pre-screened, kid-appropriate non-profits. Kids pick a charity they want to learn about and support with a $1 donation. Parents enter donations using a unique QR code on the cards and then activate Amazon’s Alexa to share a customized message about their chosen cause and how far their $1 contribution can go. Included in the voice experience are real-life examples of what their donation can help accomplish, whether it’s feeding a horse, providing life-saving medications, or delivering colorful bedsheets to kids undergoing cancer treatment in the hospitals. What if, he thought, we could get to kids in that crucial part of their lives and show how generosity and kindness can not only shape their lives but others too. He chose the name HELPEN as a nod to his time playing pro hockey in Amsterdam. The name means “help out” in Dutch. “Letting children see how their decision benefitted and impacted a cause or life is a valuable lesson they might not otherwise receive,” says Sanders. “This kind of activity builds character, empathy, and a desire to contribute. Consequences have become a negative word; HELPEN shows how it can be a positive.” Craig Sanders

THE LIST OF NON-PROFITS GROWS HELPEN also shows kids the immediacy of their decision-making: how even $1 donations, when combined with others, can lead to significant change. Sanders’ collection of non-profits include VisionSpring, which donates eyeglasses to kids around the world so they can see in school, RxART, which installs art and gives coloring books to children’s hospitals across the U.S., and Sheets from Home, which provides colorful bedsheets to kids undergoing cancer treatment in the hospital. He’s also enrolled Wild Tomorrow Fund, which feeds orphaned rhinos, as well as One Tree Planted, which plants a tree for every dollar donated, and many more. Every organization is pre-screened, including verifying its non-profit status and its ability to provide content suitable for children. One such non-profit is Girlstart, an organization that seeks to inspire girls’ interest in science, engineering, and mathematics through innovative learning methods. “Any chance we get to share our story, mission, and benefits is a great opportunity,” explained Chelsey Pippin, Engagement Officer Annual Fund, Marketing at Girlstart. “HELPEN is a terrific service to kids and the nonprofit community, and we are pleased to participate.” Sanders is pleased with this fascinating ride. As he told us, “I’m extremely excited to make an impact for families, non-profits, and our communities alike.” For more information on HELPEN, visit helpen.com. •

MY NEW YORK STORY

DARREN GREENBLATT: FROM RUNWAY TO CANVAS By Bailey Beckett

e produced one of New York Fashion Week’s biggest shows. Debuted his handbag collection in Vogue. Designed clothes, jewelry, and accessories. Authored books. Even opened a bakery. Fast forward to 2021: Now, fashion veteran Darren Greenblatt is channeling his creativity in a whole new medium: mixed media art. Combining paints, French acrylics, Hermes and Gucci wallpapers, and vintage magazines, the critically acclaimed designer and producer, has created a 20-piece series. It evokes his love/hate relationship with the industry, bringing to the canvas a visual dialogue that confronts fashion’s waste and pretension with its artistry, beauty, and relevance.

COLOR THE WORLD The result is a collection bursting with color, nostalgia, and contradiction. “As a fashion refugee with distance from the industry, and from the craft that has been a driving force since I was a child, I’m able to explore and see things with new eyes,” says Greenblatt. “My recent work homages the enigmatic and magical world of fashion—past, present, and future—and how it works within different spaces and mediums.” Greenblatt found inspiration in a wealth of materials, from flowers to graphic design, layered patterns, prints, and textures. His use of color is exaggerated, brimming with hope and fury. How those elements relate to conflict gave the artist the tension to capture his message. “There is friction between the duality of organic nature and two-dimensional graphic design, where flowers become repeated prints,” he says. Rather than label the collection, Greenblatt, in an ode to the fashion industry, numbered each piece—like the looks/exits from a runway presentation. 82 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021

RUNWAY MADNESS Greenblatt’s career trajectory has taken many routes. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, he studied with designer Betsey Johnson and couturier Christian Francis Roth before founding his first multi-media platform, Girls Rule. It was the first group show during Fashion Week catering to the youth market. It created a new runway for emerging designers to show their collections, sponsors to enter the industry, and up-and-coming models, actresses, and socialites to take the world stage. Girls Rule ruled New York Fashion Week for a decade. At the same time, Greenblatt became a creative director for iconic fashion brand Fiorucci before starting his label Stanton Maxwell and designed his designer handbag collection first shown in Vogue’s 2008 September issue. Greenblatt also began an illustration series called The Ugly Lives of Beautiful People, featuring sketches of runway collections with pithy, ironic quotes about life, culture, fashion industry, and co-authored illustrated Planet Yumthing, a DIY book series for teens. Greenblatt’s growing profile in the fashion world put him on the radar with producers of the reality show The Apprentice. He was cast as a guest fashion designer and assigned to a team of young women challenged to design a mini-collection of women’s clothes, sold to Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. They won, naturally. At the victory party, a certain former President approached Greenblatt with, “You could be the next Calvin Klein because of me.” Greenblatt contends that making someone the next Calvin Klein would take more than getting five New York City stores to carry the collection from one episode, no matter the ratings. “I had paid my dues for years. That’s the life of an entrepreneur.”

ENTERTAINING WAYS The 2009 recession encouraged Greenblatt to expand his creative palate to a new medium: food. His passion for cooking, entertaining, and experience design, coupled with the entrepreneurial instincts, led him to start Donna Bell’s Bake Shop with two friends, first as a mobile food truck and later as a brick-and-mortar shop in midtown Manhattan. Its success spawned a best-selling cookbook, Donna Bell’s Bake Shop: Recipes and Stories of Family, Friends and Food. After more than two decades in New York, where he established himself a creative and entrepreneurial force in the fashion industry, he put his career on hold for personal reasons. He also stopped drawing, sketching, and painting. Though not ready to share more about his life at that time, he says, “bad experiences may serve as inspiration for other artists, but it was never what drove me to create. So, it was hard to find the light and color that always guided my work during that time.” Eventually, the fog began to lift, and Greenblatt thought of a new series, one that would bring color to his life again. And then the pandemic hit, giving his project new urgency. “It’s what I needed, and I think what the world needed,” Greenblatt says. Greenblatt’s series will begin exhibiting later this year on a new runway. • JUNE 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 83

TIME OUT WITH… CAREY MACALEER, ALINE PILATES By Bailey Beckett

t can help your posture. Improve breathing. Perfect flexibility. Clear your mind. But riding horses? That’s the best-kept secret among equestrian enthusiasts who are preparing for another summer in the Hamptons, Upstate or other country-like locales. No instructor is more qualified to get them ready than Carey Macaleer, the owner and founder of Brooklyn hotspot Aline Pilates. Bursting with energy, enthusiasm, positivity and focus, the fitness dynamo has made a name for herself training athletes, celebrities, elderly clients and loyalists. And we can now reveal, horse lovers. “Riding and Pilates makes a perfect partnership,” says Macaleer, who often travels outside the City to meet with clients—and their horses. “Pilates’ focus is on the core connection. We ask our muscles to hug the midline and pull everything inward. It’s the same focus that equestrians need to do while riding.”

A BALANCING ACT

Aline Carey Macaleer

We caught up with one of her clients, Gillian Dubin, who has found the practice especially effective. “Riding takes an incredible amount of core strength, stability, balance of yourself and the horse,” says Dubin, who trains with Macaleer in the Hamptons (and Brooklyn). “Pilates is centered around those principles as well. Additionally, it really helps put you in touch with your body in a way I never imagined possible. That can translate into anything, but I can target specific areas of the body that need strengthening.” Working with Macaleer has made a big difference for Dubin and all of Aline Pilates clients. “If you can find a trainer you like, you should be able to connect what works for you as a rider with Pilates. I got lucky with Carey, she was a quick study in what would help me, and we got right to work,” notes Dubin. “We worked on improving my balance and increasing my mobility both of which have helped my riding a great deal.” According to Macaleer, improving posture is one of the most important parts of preparing the body to effectively handle the horse. She focuses on specific areas, like shoulders, abs and feet. “The shoulder girdle stabilization is key,” says Macaleer. “Being able to find the connection to the muscles in your back will give you more power to control the horse.”

GETTING TO THE CORE Training your core connection is also part of the practice. “Pulling the abs in deeply gives you the power and strength to lead the horse,” says Macaleer. It helps to stabilize the hips which are a driving force in moving the horse in the correct direction. I ask clients to envision the navel pulling back to the lowest part of your spin or pants line.” Finally, Macaleer focuses on the feet, making sure clients distribute their weight evenly so one heel isn’t stronger than the other, which can help thighs to rotate properly. “That’s so important, because it gives you power to direct the horse,” says Macaleer. In addition to on-site appointments, Aline offers in-studio training, observing all health precautions and safety measures, as well as a robust online menu. Clients can Zoom group classes, one-to-one training, and a video library of past workouts on the studio’s website. Horse-set or not, Carey Macaleer’s Aline Pilates will set you in the right direction. For more information on Aline Pilates, visit alinepilatesnyc.com. • 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2021
