Families Come In Droves For Candy, Comradery, Fun And Fundraising

By Cheryl Conway ith candy in tow, hundreds dressed up their trunks and kids on Friday, Oct. 27, for Trunk O’ Treat at the Riverdale Community Center in Riverdale. Parents of the sixth grade class sponsored the community-wide program from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the facility. The first time held, parents hosted the event as a fundraiser for the Riverdale Public School class of 2020. The event not only raised dollars for the future eighth graders’ graduation festivities, but brought the community together in a safe and festive environment for families. Trunk O’Treat “Provides a safe environment for trunk or treating in a friendly atmosphere,” says Jennifer Enrique, one of the parents who helped organize the event. “Keeps the

community together and support of one another’s children’s activities. We plan to continue this next year with more games and food items. The response was overwhelming and much appreciated. This is exactly what our town needed; our very own night to support one another and show the kids why we chose Riverdale to raise them.” Local families and students from Riverdale Public School and residents of Pompton Lakes schools came out for night filled with costumes, candy, music and dancing by DJ Joe; games such as guess the candy corns, raffles with baskets and prizes. About 300 filled the parking lot and 196 wristbands were purchased, says Enrique. About $850 was raised from the event with all monies allocated to support the class of

Honor Holiday Traditions And U.S. Armed Forces At Annual Harvest Home And Armistice Observance

By Dawn M Chiossi osterfields Living Historical Farm in Morristown and the Morris County Historical Commission invite participants of all ages to breathe life into history and honor U.S. veterans with the annual Thanksgiving Harvest Home and Armistice Observance on Sun., Nov. 12, from noon to 4 p.m. “This is a wonderful program with lots of unique activities,” says Mark Sutherland, Historic Sites manager of the Morris County Park Commission. “It also honors our veterans, a very important part of our event.” Admission is free for veterans and current military personnel. The program is quite popular as well with 300 to 500 visitors and approximately a dozen or so veterans with their families attending in past years. “Thanksgiving is a universal holiday that everyone can celebrate,” Sutherland says. “The Fosterfields’ program incorporates historic preparations as well as harvest activities for people to participate in. This site is unique in the area and a lot of people aren’t aware of the more traditional customs associated with Thanksgiving. We received a lot of positive feedback for the program.” At this time of the year during the Thanksgiving holiday season, thoughts turn to sharing, togetherness, food and bounty and thinking of others. They turn to history and country as well, the brave ones that did so much to help. As such, there’s no better time to step back into history and touch what those sentiments actually mean. Fosterfields Thanksgiving Harvest Home

and Armistice Observance is the ideal way to combine the two. Going to the farm isn’t so much a visit to a historical location, it’s an experience. There’s so much to celebrate and learn, visitors will never be bored. Explore the 1915 farmhouse to see what holiday foods are being prepared and enjoy a farm style Thanksgiving Celebration of the 1900’s. Visitors to the farm will meet farm friendly animals such as horses, chickens and sheep. They will be able to assist with the dinner prep at the farmhouse, enjoy interactive farm chores and enjoy a leisurely wagon ride. Foods such as corn, apples and ciders have transcended time. And in seeing where the food actually comes from and how its prepared, the expression ‘farm to table’ will not just be an idle one. In fact, when asked what the most popular event is Sutherland mentions the food. “We usually get a lot of people interested in the food preparation in the farmhouse and how the farm actually did prepare for the winter,” he says. People of all ages will love speaking with the historical reenactors dressed in period costume and hearing the tales of the past. Visitors will hear tales of people such as Charles Foster, his daughter Caroline, the Woods family who lived in the farmhouse as well as farm laborers and domestics. They will become enveloped in hearing the stories of events of the everyday and the fantastic. History will come alive with live patriotic music, creating a family friendly craft, and a tour

of the Willows. Scheduled for 1 p.m., all U.S. military personnel and veterans will be honored in a special Armistice program. This year the program will be awe inspiring as it is a special recognition the 100thanniversary of U.S involvement in WW1. As Sutherland explains, “Since November 11, 1919 Armistice Day (now called Veteran’s Day) has honored the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.” He goes on to tell how the program will focus on how the Fosters contributed to the war effort on the homefront. Also featured in the program will be “important animal war heroes,” according to Sutherland, because as people know from police K-9 units, not all heroes are human. “Many animals were war heroes,” Sutherland says. “In addition to dogs, the program will also focus on many of the animals on the farm.” And there will still be more after the program honoring

There will be a “Food For Thought,” exhibit at the visitor’s center, a hands-on transportation exhibit, where folks can see Miss Foster’s 1922 Model T Ford, a 1929 Hupmobile, a carriage and truck. There’s the 1920’s farmhouse, the Willows, Miss Foster’s Cottage, The Temple of Abiding Peace, and much more. There’s so much richness to this event, Sutherland remarks. “As always, we want visitors to step back in time at a farm that has been in operation since the Revolutionary War,” he says. “Learning history in a textbook is very different from visiting the location where history actually happened.” Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (ages 65 and over), $6 for children, $4 for children ages 2-3, children under 2 are free. For Wayne Man, Research Into Family WWII History Turns Into Project To Unite Veterans

By Anya Bochman rank Niader’s home in Wayne, which he shared with his girlfriend Marguerite Pratt-Cowing until her death six years ago, can easily be classified as a personal museum. Entire rooms are dedicated to pictures of parents and grandparents, a model of his childhood street in Clifton, and the sort of ephemera that most people wish they’d preserved. His basement is no different, although the theme is clear – the space is a shrine to his brother William Niader, who died in the Battle of Okinawa when Frank was 13. An

oil painting of William in his WWII uniform, surrounded by letters, flags and VFW mementos is prominently displayed against one wall; this rendering was donated to Niader by Project Compassion, a Utah-based organization that specializes in paintings of fallen soldiers. The rest of the space is a cornucopia of photographs, photocopied articles, Niader’s war-themed poetry and fat notebooks containing hundreds of letters of correspondence with other WWII veterans. “There are 950 names in here,” Niader, 86, says of his worn address book. “About 500 are WWII marines, can you be-

Parents who have been through addiction and on-and –off recovery will participate, as will a recovering addict. Representatives from the prevention side will also be available, as will representatives from law enforcement. With regard to treatment, Skip McLaughlin of New Life Recovery and the substance abuse counselor at Pompton Lakes High School, will participate in the event. Brady stresses that the event is open to every member of the family, including children. “Some parents think if you talk about it, you give them the idea to do it,’’ Brady said. “I don’t think so. I think knowledge is power. I think you want them in the mindset that this is not something I want to do.’’ In addition to the forum, the coalition is busy year-round with other initiatives. Monthly

meetings attract representatives from local government, the community and schools. It coordinates programs in schools, like the Health and Wellness Coalition in the high school, which spreads the word about drug and alcohol dangers. One of its initiatives, “Sticker Shock,” has about 25 student HAWC members placing warning stickers on cases of beer in liquor stores in the spring. The stickers warn customers not to serve alcohol to minors and the consequences of doing so. “I think it’s great that the kids get involved too,’’ said Brady. “They know they’re making a difference.’’ The coalition’s “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” campaign has produced lawn signs around town, warning parents not to serve alcohol to minors, and the coalition is currently conducting a community needs assessment. eciding to get a dog can be a life-altering moment. While the decision carries with it a wealth of responsibility, a dog can change a person’s life for the better, providing loyalty and companionship for years to come. Once the decision to get a dog has been made, prospective pet owners must choose a breed. Various factors play into this decision, including how much space the dog will have at home, the grooming responsibilities that come with a particular breed and the typical demeanor of a given breed. Because no two breeds or owners are the same, some dog-owner combinations may make for a better pairing than others. Descriptions of breed temperament can provide a window into the general personality of certain dogs. But such

descriptions are not set in stone, as each dog is unique and may exhibit behaviors extraordinary to its breed. Factors such as socialization and training play key roles in how dogs will react in situations, and the following are some dog breeds that have a propensity to be easy-going and relatively easy to train. Golden retriever: Golden retrievers tend to be gregarious, docile and a good fit for families. They are people-oriented, affectionate and loyal. Golden retrievers are moderately-sized dogs that need exercise to prevent boredom (which can compel them to cause damage around the home). But golden retrievers are generally a good fit for first-time dog owners. Labrador retriever: A close cousin to the golden retriever, Labradors are another breed

known for their good nature and willingness to be trained. Labs shed and can grow large, so that is something apartment-dwellers must consider before bringing home a Lab. Standard poodle: Poodles are an intelligent breed that are easily trained. Poodles can be high strung if not given ample exercise, so this is something prospective poodle owners

need to consider. Cavalier King Charles spaniel: This is a well-proportioned and smaller dog that is typically affectionate, happy and outgoing. Typically eager to please and intelligent enough for obedience training, the cavalier is naturally well-behaved and can get along well with other pets. Boston terrier: The Boston terrier, also known as the “Boston Bull,” is a compact brute of a dog. Although small in size, the Boston terrier does not lack for personality and tends to be playful and friendly with a willingness to learn. Having collected some 300 letters from veterans, Niader presented them at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va. Pictures on the walls of the basement depict Niader giving the letters to the Honor Guard. The original goal was learning more about the older brother whom Niader knew primarily through the letters he sent home. A photocopy of the original Western Union telegram informing the Niaders of William’s death is succinct and emblematic of the tremendous loss of life during the war. “Deeply regret to inform you that your son Private William V Niader USMC was killed in action 12 June 1945 Okinawa Island in the performance of his duty and service of his country,” the correspondence begins. The Community Health Department at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains has been offering the free walking program- Walk with a Doc- since its April 19th kick-off event. The next session is set for Wednesday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The program, which has grown internationally with chapters around the globe, provides an opportunity for those who live or work nearby to participate in cardiovascular activity, in a group setting, along with a doctor who provides some insight or answers medical questions in a relaxed setting.

“It’s a free program open to anyone in the community,” says Hannah Truncale, health educator at Atlantic Health Chilton Medical Center Community Health Department. “It’s fun because they are out walking with their friends; it’s a very social event. They’re out in the community walking in the mall. “We thought it as a really interesting idea,” says Truncale, about sponsoring the program. “It gives people a reason to get up and out and walk; the idea that they can learn something and meet people at the same time.” Started in 2005, by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio, Walk with a Doc has grown to more than 300 chapters worldwide. Sabgir started the initiative after frustrated by his inability to affect behavior change in a clinical setting.

Every month the group meets at the food court at the Willowbook Mall at 9 a.m.- before the mall welcomes shoppers in for business at 10 a.m.for a doctor’s presentation and walk around the mall to “exercise and talk to a doctor in a non-clinical environment,” says Truncale. Presentations last about 15 minutes followed by a 40 minute walk. At the kick-off walk, 49,556 steps were taken as a group, says Truncale. Walkers start off in a group but are then encouraged to walk at their own pace, with some moving faster than others. “Idea is everyone is up moving,” says Truncale. Doctors from Chilton Medical Center and throughout the geographic area- from all walks of medical care such as fam-

ily physicians, oncologist and urologist- volunteer an hour of their time to speak on a variety of topics or concerns. “We try to meet the needs of the community and hear what their interests are,” says Truncale. Some doctors talk about their specialty, top health issues in Passaic County or topics suggested by participants. After their talk, the doctor walks with participants in a group setting, answering any questions from participants. Walkers are from many towns in the area such as Wayne, Butler, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, Pompton Plains, Totowa, Pequannock, Caldwell and North Caldwell. Average size group has been about 20 walkers, of all ages, with some regulars, new registrants and walk-ins each month, says

Truncale. “People get very excited about it,” says Truncale. “People come back every month. They find success in their activity and they really enjoy learning from their doctors.” The program is funded through a grant Chilton Medical Center Foundation applied for and received at the end of 2016 from Coverys Community Health Care Foundation, says Truncale. Grant money is used to pay for supplies, refreshments, raffle prizes as well as t-shirts and pedometers received by all participants when they sign up, says Truncale. Donations from stores inside the mall, volunteers and the mall partnership add to the program’s success. “It’s a great partnership,” says Truncale, with Willowbrook Mall. “We have an agree-

ment with them.” Program organizers chose an indoor setting to avoid inclement weather, provide comfortable temperatures to walk and provide accessibility, says Truncale. Those under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate.
