Holiday Events Planned In Pequannock

T

he township of Pequannock has several events planned for the upcoming holiday season, including the stocking of Woodland Lake, a tree lighting and a holiday party.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the Fall Fish Stocking will take place in Woodland Lake.

A tree lighting event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Senior House.

A Holiday Party will be held Saturday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in

Greenview Park.

On Sunday, Dec. 17, there will be a bus trip to see Elf The Musical in the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The cost of the trip is $100 per person.

Holy Spirit School To Host Night Of Music

oly Spirit School in Pequannock will present a night of fun and music by The Emerald Experience on Nov. 11, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., in the school gym.

Tickets are $35 per person and include beer, mixers, soda, sandwiches, coffee and dessert. The event is BYOB. Guests may also bring their own favorite hors d’oeuvres to enhance the evening of fun, food and dance.

Take Strides To Healthy Heart And Mind By Walking And Talking With A Doc

The Community Health Department at Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains has been offering the free walking program- Walk with a Doc- since its April 19th kick-off event. The next session is set for Wednesday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The program, which has grown internationally with chapters around the globe, provides an opportunity for those who live or work nearby to participate in cardiovascular activity, in a group setting, along with a doctor who provides some insight or answers medical questions in a relaxed setting.

“It’s a free program open to anyone in the community,” says Hannah Truncale, health educator at Atlantic Health Chilton Medical Center Community Health Department.

“It’s fun because they are out walking with their friends; it’s a very social event. They’re out in the community walking in the mall.

“We thought it as a really interesting idea,” says Truncale, about sponsoring the program.

“It gives people a reason to get up and out and walk; the idea that they can learn something and meet people at the same time.”

Started in 2005, by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio, Walk with a Doc has grown to more than 300 chapters worldwide. Sabgir started the initiative after frustrated by his inability to affect behavior change in a clinical setting.

When he invited patients to go for that first walk with him in a local park, more than 100 people showed up.

According to the Walk with a Doc website, walking was recently recognized by the Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things one can do to improve health.

A low impact form of exercise, walking is easier on the joints than running and is safe for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions and those who are more than 20 percent overweight, as noted on the Walk with a Doc website.

Presentations last about 15 minutes followed by a 40 minute walk. At the kick-off walk, 49,556 steps were taken as a group, says Truncale. Walkers start off in a group but are then encouraged to walk at their own pace, with some moving

faster than others.

“We try to meet the needs of the community and hear what their interests are,” says Truncale. Some doctors talk about their specialty, top health issues in Passaic County or topics suggested by participants.

After their talk, the doctor walks with participants in a group setting, answering any questions from participants.

Walkers are from many towns in the area such as Wayne, Butler, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, Pompton Plains, Totowa, Pequannock, Caldwell and North Caldwell. Average

size group has been about 20 walkers, of all ages, with some regulars, new registrants and walk-ins each month, says Truncale.

“People get very excited about it,” says Truncale. “People come back every month.

They find success in their activity and they really enjoy learning from their doctors.”

The program is funded through a grant Chilton Medical Center Foundation applied for and received at the end of 2016 from Coverys Community Health Care Foundation, says Truncale.

Grant money is used to pay for supplies, refreshments, raffle prizes as well as t-shirts and pedometers received by all participants when they sign up, says Truncale. Donations from stores inside the mall, volunteers and the mall partnership add to the program’s success.

“It’s a great partnership,”

Program organizers chose an indoor setting to avoid inclement weather, provide comfortable temperatures to walk and provide accessibility, says Truncale. Next year, they may explore hosting some outdoor walks.

By Dawn M Chiossi osterfields Living Historical Farm in Morristown and the Morris County Historical Commission invite participants of all ages to breathe life into history and honor U.S. veterans with the annual Thanksgiving Harvest Home and Armistice Observance on Sun., Nov. 12, from noon to 4 p.m.

“This is a wonderful program with lots of unique activities,” says Mark Sutherland, Historic Sites manager of the Morris County Park Commission. “It also honors our veterans, a very important part of our event.”

Admission is free for veterans and current military personnel.

The program is quite popular as well with 300 to 500 visitors and approximately a dozen or so veterans with their families attending in past years.

“Thanksgiving is a universal holiday that everyone can celebrate,” Sutherland says. “The Fosterfields’ program incorporates historic preparations as well as harvest activities for people to participate in. This site is unique in the area and a lot of people aren’t aware of the more traditional customs associated with Thanksgiving.

We received a lot of positive feedback for the program.”

At this time of the year during the Thanksgiving holiday season, thoughts turn to sharing, togetherness, food and bounty and thinking of others. They turn to history and country as well, the brave ones that did so much to help.

As such, there’s no better time to step back into history and touch what those sentiments actually mean. Fosterfields Thanksgiving Harvest Home and Armistice Observance is the ideal way to combine the two.

Going to the farm isn’t so much a visit to a historical location, it’s an experience. There’s so much to celebrate and learn, visitors will never be bored. Explore the 1915 farmhouse to see what holiday foods are being prepared and enjoy a farm style Thanksgiving Celebration of the 1900’s.

Visitors to the farm will meet farm friendly animals such as horses, chickens and sheep. They will be able to assist with the dinner prep at the farmhouse, enjoy interactive farm chores and enjoy a leisurely wagon ride.

Foods such as corn, apples and ciders have transcended time. And in seeing where the food actually comes from and how its prepared, the expression ‘farm to table’ will not just be an idle one.

In fact, when asked what the most popular event is Sutherland mentions the food.

“We usually get a lot of people interested in the food preparation in the farmhouse and how the farm actually did prepare for the winter,” he says.

People of all ages will love speaking with the historical reenactors dressed in period costume and hearing the tales of the past. Visitors will hear tales of people such as Charles Foster, his daughter Caroline, the Woods family who lived in the farmhouse as well as farm laborers and domestics. They will become enveloped in hearing the stories of events of the everyday and the fantastic.

History will come alive with live patriotic music, creating a family friendly craft, and a tour of the Willows.

Scheduled for 1 p.m., all U.S. military personnel and veterans will be honored in a special Armistice program. This year the program will be awe inspir-

ing as it is a special recognition the 100th anniversary of U.S involvement in WW1.

There will be a “Food For Thought,” exhibit at the visitor’s center, a hands-on transportation exhibit, where folks can see Miss Foster’s 1922 Model T Ford, a 1929 Hupmobile, a carriage and truck. There’s the 1920’s farmhouse, the Willows, Miss Foster’s Cottage, The Temple of Abiding Peace, and much more.

There’s so much richness to this event, Sutherland remarks.

“As always, we want visitors

to step back in time at a farm that has been in operation since the Revolutionary War,” he says. “Learning history in a textbook is very different from visiting the location where history actually happened.”

eciding to get a dog can be a life-altering moment.

While the decision carries with it a wealth of responsibility, a dog can change a person’s life for the better, providing loyalty and companionship for years to come.

Once the decision to get a dog has been made, prospective pet owners must choose a breed. Various factors play into this decision, including how much space the dog will have at home, the grooming responsibilities that come with a particular breed and the typical demeanor of a given breed. Because no two breeds or owners are the same, some dog-owner combinations may make for a better pairing than others.

Descriptions of breed temperament can provide a window into the general personality of certain dogs. But such

descriptions are not set in stone, as each dog is unique and may exhibit behaviors extraordinary to its breed. Factors such as socialization and training play key roles in how dogs will react in situations, and the following are some dog breeds that have a propensity to be easy-going and relatively easy to train.

Golden retriever: Golden retrievers tend to be gregarious, docile and a good fit for families. They are people-oriented, affectionate and loyal. Golden retrievers are moderately-sized dogs that need exercise to prevent boredom (which can compel them to cause damage around the home). Hillview Rocks Reading Fundraiser To Help Restore Hurricane Torn Texas Preschool

By Cheryl Conway undreds of local students got to catch some R & R recently to raise money to help rebuild a preschool destroyed from Hurricane Harvey.

R & R for them included rocking and reading on Friday, Oct. 13, at Hillview Elementary School in Pompton Plains. About 300 students, staff and teachers participated in this one-of-a kind initiative called Rock & Read For Hurricane Relief.

Just by reading and rocking, the Hillview family raised $2,394, “which is astounding,” says Principal Michael Portas.

He announced the proclamation Friday, Oct. 20, during the school’s morning announcements.

Portas was planning to send 100 percent of the proceeds the following week to The Emanuel Episcopal Day School in Houston, Texas, a preschool that lost its facility during the devastating hurricane in August.

Staff, students and faculty “all played a part in it; a real team effort,” says Portas of the “community initiative looking to help our fellow Ameri-

cans.”

The idea to partner with a school affected from the hurricane came from several teachers.

Portas says at least three different teachers had approached him with concerns on “how badly Texas” was hit by the storms and had suggested some type of fundraiser.

“I had them connect with each other,” says Portas.

“Whenever you need to solve a global problem, have elementary teachers figure it out.”

The initiative was organized by Valerie Munro, Hillview’s Library media specialist; and Ilona Oosterwyk, speech therapist who runs the Peer Leader Program.

They decided to partner with this particular preschool as Munro has a family member connected to that school.

“There is a connection there,” says Portas. “Their building was destroyed. There was water up to the ceiling. Everything was lost.”

Hillview has had its share of impact from storms, such as flooding a few years back, but nothing so signifi-

cant, says Portas.

“It definitely hits home for us,” says Portas. “To help someone, it matters; a school 1,200 miles away, but they wanted to help.”

To raise the funds, students received pledge sheets and had to ask family and friends to contribute five cents or more for every minute that they read; five cents per minute would raise $1.50 per donor.

In grades kindergarten through fifth, students, faculty and staff were each offered a 30 minute time slot to rock and read, rotating turns in the school’s All Purpose Room.

About 20 rocking chairs were brought in from staff and community members for the day.

“You could hear a pin drop,” says Portas. “It was bone silent back there. They were quiet, they were

reading, they were engaged.”

Reading selections were by personal choice.

“It was what they were interested in reading,” says Portas, at their own reading level.

Portas was most impressed by his

school community’s compassion to combine literacy with philanthropy.

“The kids were excited about it just in general,” says Portas. “We have a generation of students who are very aware of their communities. They

were really excited to know they were helping other kids.

They were excited to read,” and to rock.

“Sit and read, yeah we could have done that- but to rock and readmuch cooler.”

Wayne Rotary’s Annual Fruit Sale Begins

he Wayne Rotary has contributed more than $600,000 to local charities through the years as a result of its annual fruit sale; and the organization is now in the process of holding its 2017 event. Oranges, grapefruits and apples are being offered to the public.

Approximately 42 pounds of fresh Florida navel oranges are available at $38 per case. Cases of pink grapefruit go for $35 per case. About 20 pounds of Empire, Golden Delicious apples (or mixed apples) are priced at $30 a case.

Month-Long Drive Hopes To Replenish Food To Local Residents

WIN, the Wayne Interfaith Network, is a coalition of volunteers from local houses of worship and service organizations in the greater Wayne area. It provides ongoing provisions of non-perishable food and other basic necessities for Wayne residents who are in need.

TD Bank is asking all of their customers to drop off donations to support the WIN food pantry during the coming winter months. Canned meat, canned fruit, tomato sauce, breakfast

Please limit donations to regular sizes, not super sizes, and check that all expiration dates are current.

Middle School Honors Veterans, Welcomes Stories Detailing Military Service

By Cheryl Conway eterans are being invited to share their military experiences with students and will be honored at Pequannock Valley Middle School on Monday, Nov. 13.

Held annually for more than seven years, the allday school program recognizes local veterans and brings history to the forefront, providing a platform for veterans to share their war stories and illustrate the details for students. About 15 veterans from many of the wars are scheduled to speak for 20 minutes to one hour during the program set for 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

A Flag Ceremony will kick off the program at 9 a.m. on the front lawn of the school in Pequannock, weather depending. Local veterans, as well as those in attendance, will be honored by name and rank. The Pequannock Valley Middle School band will perform, as well as the choir.

Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts are also invited to attend.

makes the world a better place,” says Principal Richard Hayzler.

The school has been hosting the veterans program there for years, with Hayzler’s support for the past six years as principal.

He admits that the veteran’s program is his favorite.

“It’s a wonderful day of the year,” says Hayzler. “We just add onto it every year to make it better for our kids and for our veterans because they deserve to be recognized.”

Inviting veterans into the school to share their stories raises students’ awareness “to recognize that the freedoms they have today” are due to the invaluable service veterans gave by defending the country, Hayzler explains.

“It’s really such a special day for the students and teachers,” says Kim Luppino, PV Media specialist, “to show respect.”

As the media specialist at the school for the past three years, Luppino says “I inherited this tradition from the previous library specialist” in planning the program.

Veterans are invited to visit the school throughout the day to speak

to students about their military experience.

They will be scheduled to present during students’ history classes in grades six through eight, explains Luppino, in classrooms as well as in the school’s media center.

Having veterans speak one on one to each classroom allows students to ask more detailed questions to gain more insight about the discussion, explains Luppino.

They will be bringing in uniforms, pictures, medals and military paraphernalia to help illustrate their experiences. Each is asked to speak 20 minutes to one hour about their service and what they learned, says Luppino.

In attendance will be some local veterans from American Legion Post 450 in Pequannock; American Legion Post 242 in Pompton Plains; students’ relatives such as fathers, grandfathers and uncles who served; and even an out of town Marine who was stationed in Germany.

Luppino says the school has welcomed veterans from WWII and the Korean War in the past. She says it has been difficult

to find local veterans from the more recent wars such as those who served in Afghanistan and Desert Storm.

Her goal every year is to try to get veterans to attend from each of the wars.

“It really is a trip back in history,” says Luppino. “It’s a day to bring history alive for the children.”

Teachers also tie in lessons with their students.

One sixth grade teacher asks students to interview parents or grandparents who have served in the mil-

itary and then to bring in artifacts from home. One student brought in a Purple Heart from a grandparent one year, she says.

“We make a mini museum at the media center so other students can see the artifacts,” she says.
