By Anya Bochman rank Niader’s home in Wayne, which he shared with his girlfriend Marguerite Pratt-Cowing until her death six years ago, can easily be classified as a personal museum.

Entire rooms are dedicated to pictures of parents and grandparents, a model of his childhood street in Clifton, and the sort of ephemera that most people wish they’d preserved.

His basement is no different, although the theme is clear – the space is a shrine to his brother William Niader, who died in the Battle of Okinawa when Frank was 13. An oil painting of William in his WWII uniform, surrounded by letters, flags and VFW mementos is prominently displayed against one wall; this rendering

was donated to Niader by Project Compassion, a Utah-based organization that specializes in paintings of fallen soldiers. The rest of the space is a cornucopia of photographs, photocopied articles, Niader’s war-themed poetry and fat notebooks containing hundreds of letters of correspondence with other WWII veterans.

“There are 950 names in here,” Niader, 86, says of his worn address book. “About 500 are WWII marines, can you believe it? I called everyone up.”

Niader’s interest in communicating with veterans came from a desire to find out more about his brother, who he described as a “tough kid.” In 1992, following the death of his mother, he began the task of hand-writing letters to men he found in the White Pages

– or mentioned in the WWII books he meticulously collects.

Once he would find a veteran, he would occasionally get names of other men in his outfit, and contact them as well.

Hundreds of former marines wrote back, some keeping up lengthy correspondences with Niader.

Having collected some 300 letters from veterans, Niader presented them at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va. Pictures on the walls of the basement depict Niader giving the letters to the Honor Guard.

The original goal was learning more about the older brother whom Niader knew primarily through the letters he sent home. A photocopy of the original Western Union telegram informing the Niaders of William’s death is succinct and

emblematic of the tremendous loss of life during the war.

“Deeply regret to inform you that your son Private William V Niader USMC was killed in action 12 June 1945 Okinawa Island in the performance of his duty and service of his country,” the correspondence begins.

The brief message from the General USMC Commandant says little about the kind of man William was, and finding out more information became an obsessive mission for the younger Niader, whose coal miner father moved the family to Clifton in 1942.

“Always when young guys move into a new place, some people will pick on them,” Niader says. “And my brother was tough, that’s why he continued on page 8

“It’s a free program open to anyone in the community,” says Hannah Truncale, health educator at Atlantic Health Chilton Medical Center Community Health Department.

“It’s fun because they are out walking with their friends; it’s a very social event. They’re out in the community walking in the mall.

“We thought it as a really interesting idea,” says Truncale, about sponsoring the program.

“It gives people a reason to get up and out and walk; the idea that they can learn something and meet people at the same time.”

Started in 2005, by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio, Walk with a Doc has grown to more than 300 chapters worldwide. Sabgir started the initiative after frustrated by his inability to affect behavior change in a clinical setting.

When he invited patients to go for that first walk with him in a local park, more than 100 people showed up.

According to the Walk with a Doc website, walking was recently recognized by the Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the continued on page 14

Wayne Takes Part In Veterans Day Celebrations With Ceremonies And Dinners

By Anya Bochman ith Veterans Day fast approaching in November, Wayne Township’s various veteran-related organizations – as well as churches, libraries and schools – are doing their part to recognize the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

American Legion Riders Post 174 holds an annual ceremony in the Veterans Alliance Park, a grassy picnic area that also serves as a soldier memorial.

Participants will then have dinner inside the Post to recognize veteran members, as well as those who have lost their lives in armed conflicts.

The event is open to the public and will start Nov. 11 at 11:11 a.m., as part of the day’s

tradition; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.

In addition, the Post will be collecting toys for the US Marine Corp Toys for Tots program between Nov. 15 and Nov. 19, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The community is encouraged to drop off any new, unwrapped toys- or a $10 donation- at the post any day of the week.

The event will be accompanied by four days of live music and food donated by local bands and restaurants.

He said he still communicates with veterans, both in letters and via email, but not as much as he used to because of

Education for families of veterans also became an issue, as Niader points out that many younger people are unaware of the service of their relatives.

“A lot of people didn’t talk about it,” Niader says. “I had a cousin who for 40 years didn’t know I had a brother killed.

And she was my own cousin!”

“We collect goods and necessities and send packages overseas for soldiers stationed in other countries.”

The Wayne Elks Lodge #2181 is hosting a dinner on Nov. 11, featuring Las Vegas and Atlantic City entertainer Eric Kearns, who, according to the Lodge’s Inner Guard Buddy Veesart, will be performing the “Voices of Legends.”

Doors open at 7 p.m., with the dinner and show beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Lodge. A live DJ will also be part of the festivities. Tickets are $45 and still available; to purchase a ticket for the dinner, call House Committee Chair Joyce Di Brigida at 201-314-9413. All proceeds will be used as funding to help veterans.

“It will be a very good show,” Veesart says. “We do a lot of activities to help veterans, and we were fortunate enough to get an entertainer like Kearns.”

Every year for the past 14 years, Our Lady of Consolation parish in Wayne has done an audio-visual presentation during their Veterans Day masses to honor and thank

their veterans. This year will be no different, with a breakfast and presentation following the 10 a.m. mass on Sunday, Nov. 12.

“Everyone is welcome, veterans and their families, as well as the community,” says Rosemary Johnson, the parishioner in charge of the presentations.

While the nature of the presentations varies from year to year, this Nov. 12 it will include videos surrounded by pictures of the community’s veterans during their time of service.

The veterans shown will be invited to share their stories, as well as any honors they may have received in service.

Finally, in honor of the upcoming holiday, the Wayne Public Library has been selected by the American Library Association and WETA Washington, DC, as one of 50 U.S. public libraries to show all ten episodes of “The Vietnam War” by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Best Breeds For First-time Dog Owners

D

eciding to get a dog can be a life-altering moment.

While the decision carries with it a wealth of responsibility, a dog can change a person’s life for the better, providing loyalty and companionship for years to come.

Once the decision to get a dog has been made, prospective pet owners must choose a breed. Various factors play into this decision, including how much space the dog will have at home, the grooming responsibilities that come with a particular breed and the typical demeanor of a given breed. Because no two breeds or owners are the same, some dog-owner combinations may make for a better pairing than others.

Descriptions of breed temperament can provide a window into the general personality of certain dogs. But such

descriptions are not set in stone, as each dog is unique and may exhibit behaviors extraordinary to its breed. Factors such as socialization and training play key roles in how dogs will react in situations, and the following are some dog breeds that have a propensity to be easy-going and relatively easy to train.

Golden retriever: Golden retrievers tend to be gregarious, docile and a good fit for families. They are people-oriented, affectionate and loyal. Golden retrievers are moderately-sized dogs that need exercise to prevent boredom (which can compel them to cause damage around the home). But golden retrievers are generally a good fit for first-time dog owners.

Labrador retriever: A close cousin to the golden retriever, Labradors are another breed

known for their good nature and willingness to be trained.

Labs shed and can grow large, so that is something apartment-dwellers must consider before bringing home a Lab. Standard poodle: Poodles are an intelligent breed that are easily trained. Poodles can be high strung if not given ample exercise, so this is something prospective poodle owners

need to consider.

Cavalier King Charles spaniel: This is a well-proportioned and smaller dog that is typically affectionate, happy and outgoing. Typically eager to please and intelligent enough for obedience training, the cavalier is naturally well-behaved and can get along well with other pets.

Boston terrier: The Boston terrier, also known as the “Boston Bull,” is a compact brute of a dog. Although small in size, the Boston terrier does not lack for personality and tends to be playful and friendly with a willingness to learn. Bostons do require a firm human leader; otherwise, they may believe they run the show.

farm isn’t so much a visit to a historical location, it’s an experience. There’s so much to celebrate and learn, visitors will never be bored. Explore the 1915 farmhouse to see what holiday foods are being prepared and enjoy a farm style Thanksgiving Celebration of the 1900’s.

Visitors to the farm will meet farm friendly animals such as horses, chickens and sheep. They will be able to assist with the dinner prep at the farmhouse, enjoy interactive farm chores and enjoy a leisurely wagon ride.

Foods such as corn, apples and ciders have transcended time. And in seeing where the food actually comes from and how its prepared, the expression ‘farm to table’ will not just be an idle one.

In fact, when asked what the most popular event is Sutherland mentions the food.

“We usually get a lot of people interested in the food preparation in the farmhouse

and how the farm actually did prepare for the winter,” he says.

People of all ages will love speaking with the historical reenactors dressed in period costume and hearing the tales of the past. Visitors will hear tales of people such as Charles Foster, his daughter Caroline, the Woods family who lived in the farmhouse as well as farm laborers and domestics. They will become enveloped in hearing the stories of events of the everyday and the fantastic.

History will come alive with live patriotic music, creating a family friendly craft, and a tour of the Willows.

Scheduled for 1 p.m., all U.S. military personnel and veterans will be honored in a special Armistice program. This year the program will be awe inspiring as it is a special recognition the 100thanniversary of U.S involvement in WW1.

As Sutherland explains, “Since November 11, 1919 Armistice Day (now called Veter-

an’s Day) has honored the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.” He goes on to tell how the program will focus on how the Fosters contributed to the war effort on the homefront.

Also featured in the program will be “important animal war heroes,” according to Sutherland, because as people know from police K-9 units, not all heroes are human.

“Many animals were war heroes,” Sutherland says. “In addition to dogs, the program will also focus on many of the animals on the farm.”

And there will still be more after the program honoring our veterans has ended. There will be a “Food For Thought,” exhibit at the visitor’s center, a hands-on transportation exhibit, where folks can see Miss Foster’s 1922 Model T Ford, a

1929 Hupmobile, a carriage and truck. There’s the 1920’s farmhouse, the Willows, Miss Foster’s Cottage, The Temple of Abiding Peace, and much more.

There’s so much richness to this event, Sutherland remarks.

“As always, we want visitors to step back in time at a farm that has been in operation since the Revolutionary War,” he says. “Learning history in a textbook is very different from visiting the location where history actually happened.”

Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (ages 65 and over), $6 for children, $4 for children ages 2-3, children under 2 are free. Current military personnel and veterans are free.

Riverview Garden Club...

People from all over can see the club’s hard work and artistry all around Wayne. The breathtaking grounds and gardens of various historic sites of the Wayne Preakness Library, The Schuyler-Colfax House, Van Riper-Hopper House, and Dey Mansion, (well known as George Washington’s Headquarters during the Revolutionary War) are courtesy of the garden club’s tremendous continual efforts.

For example, the club adorned the Preakness Library with rhododendrons, azaleas pachysandras and cherry trees.

At the Schuyler-Colfax house, the members of the Riverview Garden Club designed and maintain the gardens around this Revolutionary War Home.

The Van-Riper Hopper House’s expansive gardens are community gardens. Over at the Dey Mansion, members plant and maintain the authentic Knot Garden. The Knot Garden was so termed because of the green and flecked materials in two knots.

“Members work in teams in the gardens in spring and fall to plant new plants and maintain the old ones,” she explains. Knowing it takes a lot of patience and hard work to make a garden picturesque, Makwinski enthuses about each location’s historic ties and stunning gardens of each.

While it is impossible to choose a favorite, seeing the beauty in each, Makwinski has a soft spot for those of the Dey Mansion.

“These are colonial gardens,” she praises.

While the Garden Club does

Presentations last about 15 minutes followed by a 40 minute walk. At the kick-off walk, 49,556 steps were taken as a group, says Truncale. Walkers start off in a group but are then encouraged to walk at their own pace, with some moving faster than others.

“Idea is everyone is up moving,” says Truncale.

Doctors from Chilton Medical Center and throughout the geographic area- from all walks of medical care such as family physicians, oncologist and urologist- volunteer an hour of their time to speak on a variety of topics or concerns.

“We try to meet the needs of the community and hear what their interests are,” says Truncale. Some doctors talk about their specialty, top health issues in Passaic County or topics suggested by participants.

After their talk, the doctor walks with participants in a group setting, answering any questions from participants.

“The club brings over Christmas Trees to the Dey Mansion and decorates them in the colonial style that the whole house is famous for,” she says.

“The decorations for the tree are nothing like the ones you see on trees now. They are natural—things like birds and pinecones, and more. They are simply stunning. It is very special.”

The club is so passionate about gardening; they are awarding others for their green thumbs and artistic eyes. With their Random Acts of Beauty Award, established in 2008, the club recognizes the community members for their efforts to beautify their environments “We may give the award [to] a resident or business if they have a particularly picturesque garden or grounds,” Makwinski remarks. “They just seem to love it.”

The Riverview Garden Club participates in fundraising as well. While Makwinski tells that they like to have at least one fundraiser a year, this year they have two. In September they had a garage sale, and in April they are slated to have a craft fair and flea market.

The Riverview Garden Club is a non-profit organization.

Most join for the love of gardening.

As Makwinski shares, “I originally joined the club because I love flowers, plants and puttering in the garden.

Now that I live in a condo and don’t really have the property (anymore), with the Riverview Garden Club I can still do that.”

“People get very excited about it,” says Truncale. “People come back every month.

They find success in their activity and they really enjoy learning from their doctors.”

The program is funded through a grant Chilton Medical Center Foundation applied for and received at the end of 2016 from Coverys Community Health Care Foundation, says Truncale.

Grant money is used to pay for supplies, refreshments, raffle prizes as well as t-shirts and pedometers received by all participants when they sign up, says Truncale. Donations from stores inside the mall, volunteers and the mall partnership add to the program’s success.

“It’s a great partnership,” says Truncale, with Willowbrook Mall. “We have an agreement with them.”

Program organizers chose an indoor setting to avoid inclement weather, provide comfortable temperatures to walk and provide accessibility, says Truncale. Next year, they may explore hosting some outdoor walks.

Friends Of Laurelwood Arboretum Awarded American Rhododendron Society Grant

riends of Laurelwood Arboretum has been awarded a $2,850 grant from the American Rhododendron Society for the publication of a brochure on the history of rhododendron hybridization at Laurelwood and in the region.

The 20-page brochure will focus on the history of Laurelwood Gardens, now Laurelwood Arboretum, in East Coast rhododendron hybridizing. It will also highlight the role of John and Dorothy Knippenberg in hybridizing rhododendrons and their friendship over the decades with many of the leading early hybridizers.

The grant application was prepared by Joe Di Giacomo, chair of the Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum rhododendron study team.

“The board believes your project is an excellent educational opportunity and will be beneficial in creating interest in and knowledge of rhododen-

drons,” said American Rhododendron Society President Ann W. Mangels. “We think this is a wonderful collaboration between the Society and Laurelwood.”

The information developed for the booklet will be used for presentations to community groups and exhibits at the Knippenberg Center for Education next spring. It is being drafted

by Di Giacomo for distribution next spring in conjunction with guided tours of the arboretum’s rhododendron collection during the peak blooming time in mid-May. “This was a very competitive grant process,” said Alice Moskowitz, president of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum. “We are honored that our project was selected for funding.”

Month-Long Drive Hopes To Replenish Food To Local Residents

WIN, the Wayne Interfaith Network, is a coalition of volunteers from local houses of worship and service organizations in the greater Wayne area. It provides ongoing provisions of non-perishable food and other basic necessities for Wayne residents who are in need.

Non-Profit Seeks Volunteers To Look Out For Foster Kids

very year, in Passaic County, more than 300 children in foster care do not have an advocate to look out for their educational, medical, behavioral, and emotional needs.

Come to an upcoming volunteer informational session and learn how to become a volunteer advocate at Passaic County CASA for Children. The next informational session is Thursday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Passaic County CASA office in Wayne.

CASA volunteer advocates are court-appointed, trained, and committed adults who ensure that a child’s individual needs remain priority while they are involved with child welfare. Volunteers get to know the child while also gathering information from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers in order to make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future.

From helping siblings find permanent homes together, to helping a child access needed services, to uncovering information that helps reunite a loving family, volunteer advocates make incredible differences in the lives of abused and neglected children.

Passaic County CASA currently serves 220 children out of the more than 600 in the Passaic County foster care system each year. These children come from all across the county and all deserve to have a supportive advocate in their lives.

CASA volunteers do not require any specific educational or professional background.

Volunteers are men and women from all walks of life, and diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. To become a CASA volunteer, a person must be 21 years or older, have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writ-

ing, be willing to commit to at least 18 months of service, pass a background check, and complete 36 hours of training.

Vietnam Series Among Film Offerings At Wayne Library

he Wayne Public Library is one of 50 U.S. public libraries selected by the American Library Association and WETA Washington, D.C., to show all 10 episodes of “The Vietnam War.” Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen, digitally remastered archival footage from sources around the globe. The film features testimony from nearly 80 witness, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as the Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. This series is rated TV-MA. “The Vietnam War” Series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick will be shown at both locations. he Wayne Rotary has contributed more than $600,000 to local charities through the years as a result of its annual fruit sale; and the organization is now in the process of holding its 2017 event. Oranges, grapefruits and apples are being offered to the public.

Again this year, people can purchase their fruit over the Internet. They can use a credit card when they visit: www. rotaryclubwaynenj.org.

Approximately 42 pounds of fresh Florida navel oranges are available at $38 per case. Cases of pink grapefruit go for $35 per case. About 20 pounds of Empire, Golden Delicious apples (or mixed apples) are priced at $30 a case.

Orders may also be placed via the mail. Checks should be made out to “Wayne Rotary Foundation, Inc.” for the

amount of cases desired, and send to Wayne Rotary, Box 2022, Wayne, N.J., 07474.

Include name, address, and phone number.

All fruit, whether ordered via web or mail, will be distributed to customers on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 8 a.m. until noon.

The location will be the large Vander May Colonial Funeral Home Parking Lot in Wayne.

Volunteer Rotarians and Boy Scouts will load the cases of fruit directly into cars. There will be a limited number of extra cases of fruit available for cash purchase at this distribution on a first-come, firstserved basis. On site purchase price for citrus is $40 a case, and for apples it is $35 a case.
