Riverdale Beautification Committee Dedicated To Enriching The Town

By Lisa McNamara ums the word when it comes to describing the drive down Newark Pompton Turnpike in Riverdale this fall. The flowers and banners enhancing the scenery are largely due to the efforts of the Beautification Committee for the Borough of Riverdale. Since its formation in 2016, the committee has been dedicated to enriching the town, and one of its biggest projects involves brightening up the street light poles along the Newark Pompton Turnpike with eye-catching banners. The committee approached local businesses to display their logos, and, “We got a great response,” says Michael Carelli, director of Riverdale’s Beautification Committee. Every pole has a banner, and each one,

55 in all, promotes a different business or organization and is on display from April to Thanksgiving. Filling the baskets on the light poles with flowers is another one of its worthy endeavors; baskets are filled with annuals in the summer and graced with mums in the fall. In addition to the baskets, committee members plant flowers at borough hall and the municipal building. The committee doesn’t stop there; it is behind the snowman, snowflakes and candy canes that light up the turnpike in the winter. “We are buying minimally every year,” explained Carelli. The committee started with six LED polemounted decorations, added six more last year and hopes to eventually have 55, one for each pole.

“We try to do unique and fun projects too,” adds Carelli, and designing the town calendar is one more way the committee works to improve the quality of life in town. The calendar comes out in early December, and all residents and businesses receive one in the mail, free of charge. The days are marked with Riverdale events, and a different department is featured at top of each page, such as the fire department, tax office or recreation department. According to Carelli, the calendar is going well, but he is still looking for businesses to advertise to make it an even bigger success. still available, and they are not limited to just local businesses. Councilman Matt Oswald oversees the committee, but Carelli, who volunteers as director, is the driving force behind the wheel designing projects, ordering materials and reporting to the town council. None of the projects could be completed without donations and support from the town and volunteers. Carelli and his father, Riverdale Mayor Paul Carelli, decided to create the committee to beautify the town. “It’s a great town, known for being a close community, and it does great activities for kids and seniors,” says Carelli, but father and son thought it could be even better. Thanks to the committee, they’re doing just that.

Morris Libraries Expand Its Digital Library Program

By Jason Cohen n order to keep up with the ever evolving technological times, libraries have had to adapt. Now, residents and teachers in Morris County can access books on their personal devices, without leaving home. Now that the school year has started, MAIN (The Morris Automated Information Network) consortium libraries are making things more appealing for youngsters and even adults who are tech savvy. MAIN consortium library card holders now have the opportunity to use the TumbleBooks Library to access digital children’s story books, read along eBooks, videos, games and more. In order to help grant access to services like Tumblebooks. MAIN Executive Director Phillip Berg feels this will not only help library membership, but enhance education.

“The MAIN member libraries felt it important to help support the efforts of teachers and school libraries by not just offering a limited courtesy library card to teachers, but a full access one,” Berg said.“ Educating our young people is an important endeavor which (public libraries) can and should help as members of the greater local community.” Additionally, K‐12 teachers can register for a full service library card in the town in which they teach if they do not already reside in the MAIN public libraries service area. TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, available by subscription to Elementary Schools and Public Libraries around the world. Library users may access TumbleBooks by visiting a participating library’s website

Emily Weisenstein, head of youth services at Madison Public Library, who co‐chairs the MAIN Youth Services Committee, feels this new app is a step in the right direction. “It is a fantastic resource for our patrons,” Weisenstein said. “They offer a wide range of juvenile eBooks that children can access at anytime, anywhere – all they need is an Internet connection and a library card. I especially like their selection of interactive picture books, which allows children to read along with some of their favorite titles. It’s fun, easy to use, and popular.” MAIN libraries joined the

rest of the country in celebrating September as National Library Card Signup Month. MAIN was originally created in 1980 when several of Morris County’s libraries were automated with a shared computer system. Today, it is now a consortium of 38 public libraries located in Morris, Somerset and Warren Counties. Its mission is to lead and encourage collaboration, resource sharing, staff development and innovation by providing high quality, cost effective shared services to member libraries for their communities. MAIN libraries serve more than half a million residents of all ages. Patrons of member libraries have access to more than 2.8 million items including eBooks, eAudiobooks, Blu-rays, DVDs, music, museum passes, videogames and books.

Butler Public Library Offers Baby Boxes To Keep Little Souls Safe

By Dawn M Chiossi he Butler Public Library is offering a Baby Box Distribution Center. Working in conjunction with Baby Box University, the library invites families to get ready for parenthood by receiving their own baby box.

Free to all expectant mothers, this initiative just began in the United States for 2017, and was inspired by the maternity packages given to all expectant mothers in Finland. In Finland baby boxes are credited in aiding with the frightening prob-

lem of SIDS—Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the United States, infant mortality is extremely high with a number of five deaths per 1,000 births. Impressively, Finland has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. Finland’s mortality rate is two deaths in 1,000 births. New Jersey is the first state to offer free baby boxes to expectant mothers. It is often said that motherhood does not come with a handbook. Pregnancy is a frightening time filled with

worries and anxieties, but Butler Public Library and Baby Box University Program hope to change that. “The baby box program is a New

Jersey state funded program designed to educate parents (who have had a child in the last 6 months, or are expecting one) about Sudden Infant

Help Scare Away Hunger At Halloween 5K

he 3rd Annual Halloween 5K to Scare Hunger Away is set to be held on Sunday, Oct. 29, starting at 9 a.m. at the Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park. The Halloween-themed event will include a timed and USATF-certified course, prizes for top finishers and best costumes, trick-or-treat stations for all ages, Kids Fun Run, food, music, and giveaways. Proceeds from the event will benefit CUMAC, a nonprofit agency dedicated to alleviating hunger and its root causes in Paterson, Passaic County and northern New Jersey. Robert Barwick, organizer of the event and owner of Barwick Marketing & Events Group, started the race in 2015 in hopes of addressing hunger in his community. During its first two years the Halloween 5K has grown in popularity, helping to raise awareness and thousands of dollars for the fight against hunger in N.J. Nearly 200 people came to last

year’s race, which brought runners and walkers from all over the Garden State. Barwick and the CUMAC staff are hoping for an even greater turnout this month. Attendees are being encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the race. All donations will support CUMAC’s food pantries, which serve more than 2,500 clients every month, and will provide a vital boost to its resources at a critical time of year. With the holiday season fast approaching, the CUMAC staff expects to serve even more clients in the months ahead. “We’re excited that our event is making an impact on CUMAC’s warehouse shelves and in the homes of those in need in Passaic County,” says Barwick, who has been coordinating events in the area for more than two decades. With food insecurity now affecting nearly 50,000 people in Passaic County, the CUMAC staff believes that creativity and com-

The Baby Box Initiative is designed to equip expectant mothers and families with the essential education, resources and a support system that every expectant parent needs. Developed in conjunction with medical experts, the boxes include education, healthcare and community elements as tools to keep little ones safe and secure. “After watching a few educational videos, a baby box will be provided,” Rodriguez says. Materials at the Butler Library will be provided in both English and Spanish. According to Rodriguez, the library has been distributing Baby Boxes to patrons since the summer. “Libraries are the ideal location for distribution sites,” he says. “We are open longer than

most public institutions.” The baby boxes are twofold: They can be utilized as a safe place for the baby to sleep during their first few months of life, a kind of inexpensive crib. The boxes are made out of durable cardboard with a firm mattress inside. Baby Boxes are designed to be both a safe and comfortable place for babies to sleep on their backs and breathe freely. Additionally, they contain items for a baby starter kit. These items change regularly, but at a minimum they include diapers, accessories to help with breast feeding, breast pads, a blanket, baby clothes, onesies, bibs, personal care items, a toy, a book, coupons and much more! Rodriguez is hopeful and enthusiastic regarding the program, stating if the state offers it again, they will definitely repeat it. “My staff and I have embraced this program,” he tells. And this even includes going beyond distributing the boxes. “We will approach parents of a new child who comes into the

library and give the parent materials on the program.” The best part of the program, Rodriguez remarks, is the “smiles on the faces of parents when we give out a box. It’s fun to see. They are as excited as we are. It’s heartwarming.” And he sums up the soul of the program in just a few emotional words. “The program can save a life,” he remarks. “It can save a parent enormous grief. As a parent I would have shuddered if one of them passed away. If this program saves one child’s life, it’s worth it.”

Service Dog Volunteers Needed

ervice dogs provide invaluable support and assistance to people who require their services. These dogs may help guide the blind or provide emotional therapy to adults and children. Some service dogs even perform tasks around the house for people with mobility issues. Puppies trained for service work start out as bubbly animals just like any young dog. However, they will require additional obedience work and specialized training in preparation for their future duties. Service animals are in high demand, and many organizations reach out to volunteers to help foster pups who will go on to provide help to people in need. This usually occurs when the dog is between one and two

years old. Organizations like Canine Partners of the Rockies in Colorado and Susquehanna Service Dogs in Pennsylvania often place service dog puppies in homes. They may have a few dozen receiving care and training by fostering families at any given time. Anyone who has a love for animals can volunteer, and many such volunteers benefit from the knowledge that they helped contribute to the development of dogs that will go on to do so much good. To decide if raising service dogs is something you want to do, consider the following information. Puppies will need a secure environment, so homes with fenced yards that are free from hazards are ideal. Much as you

Fall In Love With The Hometown News’ New Magazine-Style

By Cheryl Conway elcome to the new Hometown News publication. Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out. The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine. “The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.” New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 mu-

nicipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses. The Flanders couple began their newspaper company MJ (My Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly. That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a new view on media,” says Nicastro. Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News. “I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time

the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle. This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers get what they want to keep the papers longer which will help advertisers.” While photos have always been included, the publications attract readers with a larger colorful photo on the front cover. “It allows us to feature a large local photo on the front cover and as well as offer our advertisers some other advertising options,” says Nicastro, adding that he is pleased with all the positive feedback he has received so far. “I have to say in my 30 years of publishing I have received

more positive responses to the magazine format than anything else I have done,” he says. “I even received calls from many small businesses looking to advertise.” Here are a couple of the emails received applauding the change: “ I love the new look of paper, so much easier for people to take with them! Crafts, Math, Technology For Kids At Butler Library

he Butler Library will offer crafts, computers and math programs for kids in coming weeks.
