Nourish The Soul By Joining Pompton Poets At Pompton Lakes Library

By Dawn M Chiossi oets, readers, and listeners are all invited to investigate the Pompton Lakes Poet group entitled Pompton Poets from the Pompton Lakes Library. A love of words appeals to so many, and there are just as many ways to express them. Some people choose to envelop themselves in the world of stories or novels, some convey them though music, and still with others, it’s poetry that calls to them. But whichever way appeals, folks are invited to come enjoy the next meetings of the Pompton Lakes Library’s Poet Group to share their talents. Meetings will be held monthly with the next one slated for Dec. 27. The Pompton Poets are always looking for new members to share their love of poetry,

those who wish to set it to music, or just those who want to explore their creative side. This program is open to all. In today’s ultra-modern, scientific world, there is a need to feed the often-neglected creative soul with poetry, beauty, art and music. Pompton Poets has been meeting at the Pompton Lakes Library since June 2014. The number of participants varies, but generally there’s always a small core group of five or six people. “They really seem to be enjoying it,” asserts Pompton Lakes Library Director Michael Drazek. Sometimes it’s difficult to get up in front of others and share something created by people’s own efforts and talents, but this enjoyable program is a way to get everyone inspired to get up and read

their own pieces with no pressure. As Drazek puts it, “Some people are interested in writ-

Volunteers Comb Through Borough To Clean Up Trash, Debris

By Cheryl Conway ompton Lakes is a lot cleaner thanks to dedicated volunteers who braved the chill Saturday morning, Nov. 18, to participate in the Town-Wide River Cleanup & Trail Maintenance event. Sponsored by the Pompton Lakes Environmental Committee for the past 14 years, this year’s cleanup was originally planned for Oct. 29 but got cancelled after the weather brought rain and wind. About 45 residents and students, ages 8 to 65, gathered at the Joe Grill Field Complex parking lot off of Willow Ave. between 10 a.m. to noon to clean up the area and reestablish some trail blaze signs. Mayor Michael Serra and Councilmember Frank Jaconetta and Erik DeLine joined in at the cleanup. “No one was afraid of getting dirty that morning,” says Maria Kent, chair of the Pompton Lakes Environmental Protection Committee. “The Pompton Lakes High School Environmental Club and their teachers Mr. John Turano and Ms. Kim Tanella, local Cub and Boy Scout Troops, and interested residents from the borough,

scoured the open space flood plains, parks, and recreational areas throughout the borough and collected and properly removed over 40 bags of trash recyclables, cans and bottles, plastic debris, construction debris, bricks, concrete blocks, and an old soggy couch found dumped in the river.” On the following Monday, the Pompton Lakes DPW disposed of the contents. “We also uncovered a few silted-in catch basins and made them fully functional again and ready for rain,” says Kent who has coordinated the cleanup for the past 11 years.

About 15 volunteers also blazed the newly-created river-walking trails by painting the trail markings onto the trees, she adds. After their work was done, the volunteers met and enjoyed pizza that was donated by Domino Pizza in Pompton Lakes. All who attended received beautifully-designed T-shirts sponsored by the Pompton Lakes Business Improvement District (BID). “A special thank you to PL Environmental Officer Ed Merrill, Flood Advisory Board Chairperson Lauren Venin, and continued on page 6

Councilwoman Terri Reicher, who worked very hard to make the event a huge success,” says Kent. “I want to thank all those volunteers who attended and worked very hard to keep our community clean and a place to enjoy the natural environment.” Held once a year, the TownWide River Cleanup & Trail Maintenance event has been supported in the past by the Pompton Lakes Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and local donations. This year, the Pompton Lakes BID sponsored the design and purchase of the shirts for the volunteers. Previously held in the spring, the event was moved to the fall for several reasons. “There is usually less poison ivy, and a bit cooler for the volunteers,” says Kent. “Sometimes in the spring the rivers are swollen and the flood

plains are inaccessible. “We allow people to clean up flood plain areas, open space areas, fields, storm drains, and in the river itself, with proper equipment and waders.” Results from the annual pick up have been tremendous, enough to fill “one or two dumpsters, depending if we retrieve a lot of tires or not,” says Kent. “Since a lot of the debris is wet, the weight can be over 2,000 lbs. easily! Tires, cans and bottles, bicycles, household items that may have been dumped, wood, pallets, toys, and sometimes TV’s electronics, and chairs...the list of “junk” is amazing.” Previous years have brought anywhere between 20 to more than 100 volunteers, says Kent. “All ages love the event,” she says. “It’s a long-time community-involvement program

that leaves the volunteers feeling they contributed to making the Boro and their home a cleaner, happier place to live

and raise their families. It is an innate “good feeling.” Not sure any other way to explain it. I know that is how I feel.”

writing again to get that spirit back.” Drazek tells that the program is brainchild of accomplished poet, musician and editor, George Pereny. “George came to me with the idea of a poetry group for the library, because he felt there was a ‘need for it.’” The idea of the meetings came about because of one simple idea: To express creative passion, and share it with others. The group is run very much in the way an informal poetry group would be run. “People can either come and just listen, but are encour-

aged to read their own verse,” Drazek claims. Drazek shares that the group hopes to expand to other pursuits for January, February and March. “Hopefully we would like to have artwork there as well as poetry and music,” he remarks. Pompton Poets is something that really strikes a chord with the people that attend, says Drazek. “The ability of a library is a great one,” says Drazek. “When people find a passion for something [such as the poet’s group], it is our responsibility to see how we can help and provide a space for that.”

Morris County Surgeon Seeks Kidney Donor To Save His Life

By Dawn M Chiossi n the most ironic of twists, Dr. Marc Rubman, an orthopedic surgeon who has been helping patients for two decades, now needs a kidney transplant. He is asking the public at large to become living kidney donors. Disease can be insidious and unmerciful, and unfortunately no one is immune. Rubman’s kidneys failed in 2015, due to polycystic kidney disease, a condition that he inherited from his mother. Rubman is searching for living donors, because sadly, his condition also afflicts his family as well, so they are unable to donate their own kidney to him. With polycystic kidney disease, the kidneys start to grow cysts, unlike a normal kidney which is cyst free. The cysts then keep growing until they crowd out the normal kidney.

Unfortunately then, the kidneys will eventually stop working. With this particular condition there is no cure. It is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. Originally getting involved in the medical profession because he wanted to help others, the irony of his situation is not lost on him. Instead of being bitter, Rubman chooses to see his condition as a blessing. “This has really given me a perspective of what patients go though, what it’s like on the other side,” he says. “In a way, it has given me a real appreciation of what is important.” When people think of gifts, they often think of something tangible that gives joy for only a short time, but with the gift of organ donation, it is a gift that resonates and echoes throughout a lifetime. Just by making that one choice, that

one compassionate act, organ donation can save a life. By being a living donor, a person will see just how meaningful the gift of living donation is. It enriches both the donor and recipient. Even though he has been struggling with this condition for several years, Rubman refuses to let his condition get him down. “This is a disease that unfortunately is very common, more common than you realize,” Rubman says. “And it’s one that no one’s ever heard of. People are aware of Parkinson’s because of Michael J Fox, and they are aware of ALS because of the ice bucket challenge, but not PKD.” Rubman seeks to change that. Most people are born with two viable kidneys. In a surprising fact that most people do not know, they only need

the power of one to live well. So when donating a kidney to someone else, the quality of the donor’s life is not affected, but it can be a matter of life and death to the recipient. With an approximate two day stay in the hospital, doctors can remove the “spare,” kidney from the living donor and then he or she recovers in a matter of weeks. to donating organs after death, but in donating a living organ such as a kidney, the results are immediate. With a donation from a deceased donor, the wait can be up to an agonizing 10 years. Rubman is candid with what he is facing and what he is asking of others.

“Living donation is an amazing thing,” he asserts. “Due to advances in medicine people can be helped so much more, now than in the past.” Realizing that people are leery about making such a commitment, he is empathetic. “The procedure now is less invasive than in the past, recovery time is relative-

It can be as simple as filling out an application, getting a simple blood test and then getting screened. Facing illness is a frightening experience, but with a wonderful treatment such as organ donation at the helm, folks can triumph. Recipients can go

from patients to survivors, and donors can go from strangers to heroes. While waiting for a donor Rubman lives his life going to dialysis three times a week, for a total of 15 hours. Rubman still gives his time and energies to the world, works part time and enjoys being a husband, father, brother and family man. “I am so grateful,” Rubman shares. “I have such great support from family and friends. Practice Weather-Related Pet Safety All Year Long

aring for pets is sometimes compared to raising children. Though the two are not exactly the same, there are similarities between raising a child and caring for a pet. Like curious kids, fearless pets may not understand the potential hazards around them, and some of these dangers differ depending on the season. Winter Cold weather and snow may make both pets and people less likely to venture outdoors. Dogs that use the yard to relieve themselves often cannot avoid the ice and snow. These conditions can put pets at risk. As with humans, animals are susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. When the weather is cold, pets should not remain outdoors without shelter for

extended periods of time. The Humane Society of the United States advises that exposed skin on noses, ears and, paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage. Dogs and cats are safer and warmer indoors. Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate pet paws. When the animal licks irritated paws, the chemicals can be transferred to the tongue and mouth. Rinse paws after dogs come in from walks or use protective booties to keep feet covered. Limit the amount of products you use to melt snow, opting for sand or cat litter for traction. Provide more water during the winter when the effort it takes for pets to keep their bodies warm can quickly deplete

their energy that has been stored. Compensate by giving pets a little more food and water in the winter. Pets may be attracted to automotive antifreeze due to its sweet smell and taste. But antifreeze can be toxic. Coolants and antifreeze made with propylene glycol are less toxic to

pets, wildlife, and even human beings. Spring Spring is a season of rebirth and renewal when pleasant weather has both people and pets eager to get outdoors again. However, certain springtime dangers may be lurking, and it takes an informed pet owner to keep animals safe. Spring cleaning is a ritual for many families, and cleaning chemicals and products can be dangerous to inquisitive pets. Use these items properly, and keep dogs and cats away. Birds are especially sensitive to chemical fumes, so move birds out of harm’s way when cleaning.

CCM’s Third President Inaugurated, Sets New Vision For College

By Cheryl Conway fter a year settling into his position as the third president at County College of Morris in Randolph, Dr. Anthony Iacono shares his vision for a promising future. Iacono, 49, of Mt. Arlington, was inaugurated on Friday, Oct. 6, at CCM with more than 400 attendees. He replaces Dr. Edward J. Yaw who led CCM for 30 years since 1986. With 20 years working in education, Iacono has the skill and passion to maintain CCM’s high quality standard while strengthening its offerings to be “among the most innovative schools in the nation,” he stated. His goals are to continue to provide high quality education; remain contemporary; build an honors program with more active internships; and expand workforce development. With currently 8,000 students enrolled, CCM offers 100 articulation agreements between colleges and universities, 45 associate degrees and more than 25 certificate programs. “Its high quality with small classes,” says Iacono. To remain contemporary, Iacono says “we are building a virtual campus,” offering

entire degrees online, advising and enrichment classes. “We’ve had online classes for 15 years at least,” explains Iacono, but by reorganizing and including clubs, students can be “interacting for a holistic experience.” Iacono also plans to expand CCM in the area of workforce development by providing more in engineering and manufacturing, tourism and hospitality, technology, and healthcare, he says. He is hoping to build on workforce training to support employers and industries while providing more opportunities for students. CCM is the only two year school in New Jersey to be designated by the Department of Homeland Security and NSA Designated National Center for Excellence in Cyber Security, notes Iacono. “That’s a huge and fast growing field,” says Iacono. Students with their associate’s degree in technology are being offered a starting salary of $50K, he says. Out of the 19 community colleges in NJ, CCM alumni have been ranked by payscale. com to receive the highest paid salaries with two-year degrees, says Iacono. Out of the 1,100 community colleges in the nation,

CCM is ranked in the top third for highest alumni salary. Some graduates have gone on to become medical doctors, sheriffs, dentists, senior executives. “You can absolutely go anywhere,” says Iacono. “Whether attorney, or engineer or hospitality, business, we are equally proud of every one of them.” With growth comes challenge, and Iacono remains optimistic. “We know our goals are to expand and serve the community,” he says. To maintain enrollment and funding, Iacono says they will continue to monitor the economy, tune in to legislation and keep up with a changing industry by providing employees updated training. It’s “not really a challenge, it’s an opportunity,” says Iacono. gy, grant programs and communication are some of CCM’s strong attributes. “We invest in a lot of ourselves,” says Iacono, by hiring the “best professors around.” Faculty is noted for their research and publishing. “They are very current in their field.” As far as technology, Iacono says, “Technology is essential. We have to stay ahead of those curves. We continue to expand our technology.” Staying on top of grant programs and having advisors in each department helps “to keep us current,” in how the industry is changing in areas such as engineering, health and culinary programs. Communication is key. “We talk to the community” and school districts. “We look at what do our students want? What do they need today? It’s imperative to remember why we are all here- it’s the students.” Working in a college setting, and in education, has been Iacono’s desired profession for the past two decades. Before starting at CCM on Sept. 1, 2016, Iacono served as vice president of Academic Affairs at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla. “I loved it, it was a great school,” Iacono

says about his 17 years at IRSC where he started out as a faculty member teaching history, then dean. Originally from Connecticut, Iacono attended community college at IRSC before it became a four-year state college. Iacono received an associate’s in general studies from IRSC; went on to get a bachelor’s and master’s in American history from the University of Central Florida; followed by a doctorate in American history from Mississippi State University. Iacono was contacted about the opening at CCM and decided to apply. Selected by the hiring committee- made up of faculty, staff, administrators and students- the CCM Board of Trustees made the final decision and hired Iacono in Feb. 2016 for a three-year contract. “I love what the County College of Morris is all about,” says Iacono. It “lets us focus on the first two years. I like the focus on freshman and sophomore years,” with the ability for a “seamless transfer and then big scholarships,” noting that CCM has great relationships with many four year institutions. Unlike most community colleges that focus heavily on the sciences and technology, at CCM there is equal attention between STEM and the arts.

“We have great balance,” says Iacono. Science, math, technology is critical, but with art- it “produces a well-rounded individual. CCM has really held its focus on that.” A year before he arrived, the college dedicated the Edward Yaw Music Technology Center. “We really value the arts,” says Iacono. “We emphasize it as one of our priorities. When you have that balance, you are serving your community really well. That was a real standout out for me,” in accepting the CCM position. “It was the opportunity to head up my own college,” Iacono adds, and return to the east coast with his wife, Debbie, with their four children, with two in college and two in middle school. His new role invites him to take CCM to the next level. “There are programs we don’t have today,” he says, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and expanded healthcare options. CCM has “50 years of great success, great leadership, great students, great community. “Education is about improving things for people. I never wanted to leave the college environment. It’s just a nice environment to be in every day.”
