T
By Josh Lashley he Kinnelon High School girls’ lacrosse program was rife with youthful and inexperienced student-athletes on the roster this past spring season. But, that didn’t prevent them from competing
to the fullest of their abilities each and every time that they were on the field. The Colts were rewarded for their efforts with seven victories and a spot in the NJSIAA North 1 Group 1 Sectional Tournament. In the opening round,

Kinnelon topped North Warren, 5-3, before losing to Glen Rock in the quarterfinals. Kailee Beal, the head coach for Kinnelon, noted some of the top notch wins the 2017 season. “Some contests that stand out as the most impressive for our team this season were two wins against Indian Hills [on April 8] and Pascack Valley [12-9 on May 11],’’ Beal said. “Indian Hills was a close game, back to back the entire time. This season we lost a lot of games by one or two goals so to
finally beat a team 9-8 and to be on the other side of the score board was a great feeling for the entire team. Another win against Pascack Valley was an awesome team effort as well. We outscored Pascack Valley, 7-2, in the second half after trailing, 7-5. To see the girls work hard in the second half and to finish strong with a win was great.’’ Players who demonstrated leadership capabilities certainly helped guide the Colts in the right direction this year. “Some athletes who emerged as leaders were
our seniors Dana DeBel and Katie Bonanno,’’ Beal said. “They were our team captains and made sure to keep everyone positive throughout the entire season.’’ Coach Beal was proud to see many of the younger players on the team who made positive strides throughout the course of the season. “I had a ton of underclassmen starting on varsity this season, so to see them come in on the first day of pre-season and watch them play the last contest of the season showed how
all of their hard work paid off,’’ Beal said. “[They included] Annie Berthiaume, Monique Zacarias, Olivia Fuiza, Taylor Smith, Sophia LaBanca, Savannah Herrington and Danielle Stitzel. “We have a very bright future with a younger squad coming back for next season,” she said. “This season was a rebuilding season with only two returning seniors on the team. For next year, we have the same team coming back with more knowledge and experience on the varsity level. I am really excited.’’
