Exercise Leads Montville Students To Healthier Lifestyle And Upcoming TV Segment

By Cheryl Conway ontville Township public schools have been going the extra mile to encourage youth to engage in physical activity.

About 50 fifth graders from Valley View Elementary School in Montville showed up to school early on Thurs., Sept. 28, to lead the nation in the 9th annual Exercise United States (Exercise US) program. Schools throughout the 50 states pick a 15-minute time slot to exercise during the 10 hour exercise relay from coast to coast.

Starting on the east coast, students at Valley View kicked off the relay at 8 a.m., inside the school gym, participating in different forms of exercise set to music.

Activities included calisthenics, jogging, pushups, arm circles, stretching- “A lot of movement for 15 minutes,” says Leonard Saunders, physical education teacher at Valley View and founder of the national program.

With September recognized as National Childhood Obesity Month, Saunders figured the

month to be a good fit for his initiative always held on the last Thursday in September.

The purpose of the program is to “promote health and fitness,” he says. “To promote a healthy lifestyle; to make sure it’s just as important in the future. Exercise is important at this age and any age.

Kids think they’ll be healthy their whole life. They feel they have youth on their side.”

The American Heart Association has reported that 25 million children and adolescents, age 2-19 in the U.S. are overweight or obese, marking nearly one in three American children.

This year, 500 schools, from the east to the west, as far as Alaska signed up, he says. Each school exercises for 15 minutes, with the relay lasting 10 hours ending at 3 p.m. Pacific Time on the west coast, “to let students know it’s going on all day.”

Saunders says, “I created the event so I was the first one to sign up. We’ve been doing it for nine years,” with next year marking the continued on page 3

I like to do things for the kids to make it memorable, to make it an imprint in their lives.”

Saunders says his goal is to grow the program worldwide one day so its lasts 24 hours.

The idea for his initiative popped into his head while jogging.

“Lots of things pop in my head when I jog,” says Saunders, who jogs a few miles every other day.

“Things just pop in my head and I try to make it work; things I want to write. It’s a great way to clear my head.”

The other program Saunders created while jogging is the worldwide Project A.C.E.S., All Children Exercise Simultaneously. Known as the “world’s largest exercise class,” A.C.E.S. will celebrate 30 years on May 2, 2018.

Held at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday in May, A.C.E.S. coincides with National Physical Fitness and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week.

As a physical education teacher for the past 34 years of currently 367 students in grades pre-K

through five at Valley View School, Saunders “wanted to get kids at my school to exercise.” So he organized all five elementary schools in Montville to exercise simultaneously back in 1989.

“We went out to the hardtop outside, kids did aerobics, running around playground,” he says about the first year held at Valley View.

The other students in the district exercised at their schools as well.

“Then someone said to me I can get a school in New York to do it,” and then a school in Connecticut sighed on. Saunders figured “wouldn’t it be cool” if there was one school in every state to participate, so he sent out letters to elementary schools and his idea soon grew to one-quarter of a million kids participating the first year.

After “Sports Illustrated” learned and shared the initiative, the program grew worldwide, explains Saunders, with now millions of children exercising together.

“Kids now are motivated to do it,” Saunders says about exercise. “It’s a great way to promote fitness. Kids are exercising simultaneously; great way to motivate

kids to exercise.”

To recognize Saunders and his A.C.E.S. program, P.B.S. “Classroom Close-Up NJ,” a 15-time Emmy award winning show in its 24 season produced by NJTV and NJ Education Association, visited Valley View this past year on Wed., May 3, to film the Valley View A.C.E.S. segment.

Viewers can watch this episode on Sun., Oct. 22, at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. NJTV in the Montville area is channel 8.

“In its 24 season history, Mont-

ville Township Public Schools have been featured 11 times,” says Susan Marinello, Montville Twp. School District Communications officer. Programs across N.J. are chosen to be featured, with each lasting about five minutes.

During the Valley View A.C.E.S. segment, the entire student population of 367 students in grade pre-kindergarten through fifth participated in the filming.

“The students and faculty are very excited about the upcoming broadcast,” says Marinello.

Montville Women’s Club Seeks New Members

Montville Middle School Stem Program Branches Into Elementary Schools

By Jason Cohen ontville Township Public Schools has many STEM and STEAM initiatives in K-12 throughout the district.

It now has one that crosses multiple districts, Montville and Parsippany, and has older kids teaching younger ones.

STEM PALS brings the fourth grade classroom into the seventh grade, and the seventh grade mentors into the fourth grade, through a live remote connection. Together, students in both classes tackle engineering, math and science concepts resulting in experimentation, original research and solutions.

The project, titled STEM PALS is a middle school initiative in Montville Township Public Schools, and an elementary initiative in Parsippany schools. The founders of the program are Montville’s Robert R. Lazar Middle School’s Science teacher Marisa Castronova-Wos and fourth grade Intervale Elementary School in Parsippany’s fourth grade teacher Jessica Shackil Palombi.

STEM PALS was piloted in the 2015-2016 school year and is an invited program for selected students at Lazar. Last year, it received a New Jersey Education Association HIPP Grant and launched its first full year. STEM PALS received the N.J. Education Association’s (NJEA) Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education Award for 2016.

This year, STEM PALS was the

recipient of a $5,000 NJEA HIPP Extension grant and has become STEM PALS Squared, going from 20 seventh and eighth grade students in Lazar to 40, and from one fourth grade classroom in Parsippany to two.

The mentoring program meets once a week via Google Hangout on Chromebooks and the classroom white board. The theme this year is theme park rides. There will be three challenges the students will tackle throughout the year.

Castronova-Wos told the “Hometown News” the children in both schools have enjoyed the program and benefited from it.

“You don’t need a huge budget to get the kids inspired,” Castronova-Wos said. “It’s (STEM PALS) is very self-driven. It’s not like your traditional academic class. My favorite part about it is when I’m in the room with the kids and you can feel the energy.”

Maya Ganguli, an eighth grader who is part of STEAM PALS, said the course is a lot of fun and she has learned a lot. Some of the projects they have done so far include making environmentally friendly packing peanuts and scribble bots, which involves batteries, a Pringles can, pens, tape and paper. After making a scribble bot, the kids explained how to create a closed circuit to enable the bot to move.

Then once it is moving, students are encouraged to make changes to the system to explore how this affects the bot.

Hilldale Elementary Adopts Texas School

illdale Elementary School in Pine Brook has adopted the Lucian Adams Elementary School in Port Arthur, Texas.

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., every student – kindergarten through fifth grade- at Hilldale Elementary, as well as teachers, volunteered to pack a backpack of supplies for a student at Lucian Adams Elementary School. Each Texas student will receive a backpack filled with a notebook, pencils, scissors, markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, etc.

Port Arthur is one of the many Texas towns recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

Under the leadership of second grade teacher Kel-

ly Forst and fourth grade teacher Stacey Hogan and the Hilldale Student Council, students in grades K through 5, as well as their parents and faculty, have been actively collecting school supplies and other donations for the students at Lucian Adams Elementary.

“We even have items for the teachers at Lucian Adams,” said Forst.

There are 327 students enrolled at the Hilldale, part of the Montville Township Public School district.

“Every student in Hilldale School– K through five - packed a backpack for a student at Lucian School,” said Hogan.

“This is a huge volunteer project,” said Principal Jill Cisneros. “The students at Lucian Adams Elementary School in Port Arthur, Texas, are the same ages as our Hilldale students.

Because of this, the students can relate to their loss. The students want to help.

This is a great way to reach out to students in Texas.”

In preparation for Wednesday’s event, fourth

grade students organized all of the supplies. Student council representatives worked at the event to help organize the assembly lines.

The Parent Teacher Council and individual parents have already offered to foot 20 percent of the shipping fees.

hen it comes to annual planning, businesses often spend too much time on the planning process or too little because they are busy with dayto-day operations. There’s a simple method called the “Hourglass Approach” that can help you efficiently focus on your goals and create a plan to achieve them.

In the first stage, review the internal and external business environment. Force yourself to carefully consider the variables affecting your business: The internal environment.

Look at all aspects of your business, from personnel to financing.

The contest is open to students, amateurs and professionals. Women’s Shelter Founder Seeks Donations For Her Birthday

n Oct. 4, Sandra Ramos- the founder of Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS) domestic violence shelter for women- turned 76 years old. In lieu of presents, she is seeking tax-deductible donations to keep the shelter running. All proceeds will directly assist women and children in need as monies will be used to pay the

Friendship Circle Walk To Benefit Special Needs Families

he annual Friendship Circle Walk will bring together thousands of people from across the region for an afternoon of fun and friendship on Oct. 29.

The highlight of the day is a one-mile walk to raise awareness of and support for programs to benefit children and teens with special needs and their families. The fun-filled day includes a Friendship Fair with inflatable

rides, a virtual reality arcade, batting cages, petting zoo and a BMX Bike Stunt Show.

This year’s event is being presented by Atlantic Health Systems, and will be held at LifeTown in Livingston. A 53,000-square-foot social, recreational and educational center, LifeTown is currently under construction.

Hessy Taft To Talk At Chabad Center Of Passaic County

oday Hessy Taft is an 83-yearold professor in New York.

During the mid-1930s, she was a baby in Berlin-a particularly attractive baby-who was chosen for the cover of a Nazi magazine intended to show the perfect Aryan child. Little did the editors know, their picture perfect cover baby was actually Jewish.

She will share her amazing story of courage and faith at the Chabad Center of Passiac County in Wayne on Sunday, Oct. 29, and discuss how she became the “Perfect Aryan of the Third Reich.”

Free Guided Tours Offered At Laurelwood Arboretum

riends of Laurelwood Arboretum will offer free guided tours of the arboretum on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 12:30 p.m. This is the final guided tour of the 2017 season. To join a tour, meet at the Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Road West in Wayne.

Trained tour guides will lead visitors through the arboretum, identifying many of the unique trees and plantings. Carts will be available for those who do not wish to

walk.

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum is the nonprofit organization that helps preserve and manage more than 30 acres in partnership with Wayne Township.
