By Cheryl Conway ith more partnerships and fundraisers, the new director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. hopes to grow the non-profit to support a greater number of women seeking jobs and confidence to succeed in the workforce.

As the former executive director of the Newton Housing Authority for 15 years, Iozzi brings years of experience in government and nonprofit management, dedicating her entire career

to empowering low and moderate-income families achieve economic self-sufficiency, personal development and growth.

he Montville Recreation Department will be sponsoring Forensics Intro, a competitive speech and debate camps for students entering grades six to nine in September 2018.

The program will focus on the techniques of effective public speaking in the areas of oral interpretation, oratorical interpretation, extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, as well as public forum debate.

Instruction is provided

by Mary Gormley, Montville Township High School’s Forensics Coach for 30 years, who coached students in local, state and national competition.

Students from the award-winning teams will be acting as seminar interns.

Mad Science Camps Planned In Montville

he Montville Recreation Department will be sponsor Mad Science Summer Camps for children ages 6 to 10 in July and August.

Classes will be held in the Community Park Field House and will be taught by Mad Science of Morris and Sussex staff.

Brixology Camp, is set to be held Monday and Tuesday, July 2 and July 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This new STEM program allows kids to step into the shoes of an engineer by using Lego bricks to build a different engineering-themed project every day; explore engineering fields including mechanical, structural, aerospace, nautical, and bioengineering; use critical thinking, cooperation, and creative problem-solving to test

and improve creations; and experience extended learning with a take-home project to reinforce each concept.

Slimy Potions Camp, to be held Monday and Tuesday, July 2 and July 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will teach students to harness the marvelous powers of liquids. Participants will join a Mad “hands-on” experience as a Junior Mad Scientists.

They will create chemical reactions, learn to make bath fizzers, find out the secret to making chocolate taffy rolls and ooey, gooey slime, create acid/ base volcanoes and lots more.

This camp includes some food items.

Spy Academy will be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Kids will step into the shoes of a detective

and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. They’ll get into gear with Agent Undercover and learn what it takes to be successful in the spy world.

Fairly Odd Forces will take place Monday through Friday, Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn all about electricity, its properties and how its used every day. They’ll jump in and investigate inertia, gravity and centripetal force.

Invention-ation Camp is planned for Monday to Friday, Aug. 27 to Aug. 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all - their minds.

With a little bit of ingenuity,

campers will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to bring home and a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration, this camp is 100 percent fun.

NASA Academy of Future Space Explorers will be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 27 to Aug. 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students will set off on a voyage to discover the solar system, and will explore topics such as planets and moons, sun and stars, space phenomena, rocket science and space travel, space technology and living in space. The camp culminates with a rocket launch or two and each camper will make his or her own Mad Science Rocket to take home.

Dress for Success Northern NJ- 10 Counties, serves Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Somerset, Union and Passaic counties.

While it is an affiliate of the Dress for Success Worldwide organization, it is an independent 501©3, responsible for its own fundraising and operations. It relies solely on corporate, foundation and individual contributions to serve its clients at no cost to them.

The mission of the organization is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

“The goal is to provide all developmental tools, get the interview and do well and to build their confidence,” says Iozzi.

All of the programs are offered at no cost to participants. The organization served more than 1,500 women last year,

co ages 18 to 64, and is well on its way to double that amount this year.

“I really want to do more locally to generate support for the mission through both educational events, fundraising, and more,” she says.

As the new executive director, Iozzi oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization.

“We run nine programs,” she says, and have 600 volunteers with three paid staff members that manage the programs.

One of the programs is a Career Center in which women get assistance with their resumes, interview and online job searches.

Another program, Steps For Success offers a 10-week job ready boot camp for unemployed women to break down barriers and provide an extra push to assist a woman in getting a job.

“The women come from all different backgrounds,” says Iozzi, not just those who are disadvantaged. Some are stayat-home moms trying to get back into the workforce, others are first time clients try-

ing to enter the workforce.

Other programs include mentoring, technology skills, time management and budgeting and Foundation For Success in which women are provided tips on how to keep their employment.

A Professional Women’s Group is also offered to provide monthly networking meetings featuring speakers to discuss professional issues, personal growth, budgeting and balancing.

The Mobile is another program in which a van visits agencies by appointment and operates as a boutique with volunteer stylists on board to play dress up with suits and help women build confidence.

“Its largest suiting was for 70 people,” notes Iozzi. Women are given a referral sheet, are sized and pick their outfits from colors of suits and shoe styles from heels to flats, and also receive a one hour training session.

“It’s amazing to see the transformation that happens,” says Iozzi. The Mobile “brings suits to them, does training,” covcontinued on page 5

Some ways to get involved include: Be a referral agency to enroll clients in suiting and training programs; donate professional attire; coordinate a suit, accessory, toiletry or shoe drive; volunteer to provide free one-on-one job coaching/mentoring; be a personal shopper for the mobile suiting unit; be a personal stylist, helping clients select appropriate attire for a professional look; provide a training on personal and/ or professional development topics; host a lunch-n-learn to learn about the programs; help coordinate a “Walk today so we can run tomorrow” 5K; host fundraisers or donate proceeds from events; be a speaker;

With the main boutique at the Madison Community House in Madison, Iozzi hopes to expand to include satellite offices in each of the 10 counties “so people can donate, get clothing and training,” closer to where they live.

Bridge to Success is another program in which clients can engage in a bimonthly job search after they go through steps of training, explains Iozzi.

“This bridge helps them with their one on one to give them the tools,” she says, to succeed.

Since women are served for free, Iozzi stresses it is “so important to have grants and donations.”

While the majority of the women are referred to Dress For Success by partnering agencies, the organization will connect with all women who need assistance. Some partners include the Women’s Center at the County College of Morris in Randolph, and Jersey Battered Women’s Service.

In its 20th year, Iozzi says “I know we are doing something right.” Clients seek jobs in all areas from doctors, accountants, customer service, corporations and even Emmy writers.

“It’s crazy the diversity we have,” says Iozzi, who was selected recently to serve as vice president for the Morris County Human Relations Commission.

“While most people immediately think of us as ‘the suits,” it is so much more than that. Our organization is all about building confidence, not just in appearance, but through the development of key competencies that are essential to excel in the workplace.

“You can look good but you may not have the skill set,” she says. “We offer many programs and are always looking to do more.”

Dress For Success recently held its largest fundraiser with its gala in May at the Park Savoy in Florham Park. She plans to host the organization’s first fashion show continued on page 6

Montville Rec Camp Is For Kids Who Love To Sing, Dance

he Montville Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Good vs. Evil Dance Camp for children ages 4 to 7.

The camp is for those who love to dance and sing. They will focus on ballet, jazz, hip hop, across the floor, jump, leaps and turns. There will also be a short break for snacks and crafts between dance styles.

In her role for just two months so far, Iozzi says “I love it. Every day is just a fulfillment; you are making a difference in someone’s life. We are changing lives. She’s now able to support her family. We are giving women confidence, if they lost it along the way. Everybody has a story. We are building them up, giving them the tools they need to be successful.

“You can’t buy that satisfaction or making a true difference in someone’s life. I love my job.

I’m at a point to make a real difference and this is definitely it.”

Dress For Success Northern N.J. is one of three branches in N.J. and the Madison office is one of 154 offices in 30 countries worldwide.

“We are here and we need help,” she concludes. “If people have ideas for fundraisers or partnerships, I’m open. I tend to think outside the box.”

5 Tips For Summer Road Trips

or many people, summer means setting out on a road trip in search of bucket-list-worthy excitement or a relaxing vacation.

Whether you’re going down the road to visit family or across the country to see a national monument, it is important to prepare your vehicle – and its tires – before you pull out of the driveway.

These five safety tips can help get your family ready to hit the road this summer: 1. Check Your Tread – A tire’s tread depth can determine a vehicle’s safe stopping distance. You can check your tread depth by sticking a penny upside-down in a tread groove.

2. Ensure Proper Tire Pressure – Low tire pressure can lead to poor handling and gas mileage, excessive wear and overloading. Drivers should check their tire pressure at least once a month, and especially before any long trip. Use a dependable air gauge or stop by an automotive store like Discount Tire or America’s Tire to take advantage of complimentary air checks.

The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day and the celebrations that surround it.

• Although 56 people eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate and widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock” on a document has become synonymous with the process of signing something.

• The Declaration of Independence was adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as Independence Hall.

• The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest

person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed the document. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee.

• John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other.

• Philadelphia is the birth place of much American history and is home to the Liberty Bell.

Each Independence Day, the Liberty Bell is tapped (not rung, as the vibration would further damage the cracked bell) 13 times in honor of the original 13 American colonies.

• The original 13 American colonies were located all along the eastern seaboard. They include Virgina, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode
