Run Or Walk In Lincoln Park To Help Hurricane-Affected Communities

Lincoln Park Mayor’s Wellness Campaign’s 11th Annual 2017 Beavertown 5K Run/Walk “Hope After The Hurricanes” is set for Sat., Nov. 4, with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. at the PAL Community Center in Lincoln Park, followed by the start time at 9 a.m.

This year’s proceeds will benefit food banks in Texas and Florida to assist in their recovery from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“We wanted to help the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and thought the best way to do so as a community was to raise funds for the food banks in the hardest hit areas,” says Janet Cassidy, superintendent of Recreation of Lincoln Park. “When you think about it, some families lost everything and food banks can supply more than just food, water and basic staples; they also supply baby formula,

baby food, toothpaste, soap, personal hygiene products and so many other items that are part of everyone’s daily routine that were lost in the hurricanes.”

As explained on the Lincoln Park website: “On August 28, 2017 the eye of Hurricane Harvey hit the shores of Texas and Hurricane Irma’s path of destruction recently traveled through Florida, where many of our own Lincoln Park residents have relocated to. If there ever was a town that could understand what those states are going through it is Lincoln Park. Just a few short years ago on August 28, 2011 Hurricane Irene hit Lincoln Park and some are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy’s October 29, 2012 visit.”

This year’s campaign hopes to raise more than $5,000, says Cassidy.

“After conversations with food banks in Texas, we felt it best to focus on monetary donations,” says Cassidy, rather than collecting food and necessities. “Their recovery will be on-going for quite continued on page 4

Arts, Finance, Driving Programs Offered At Pequannock Library

T

he Pequannock Township Library will offer a variety of programs in October, focusing on the arts, personal finance and a smart driving course.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., Ed Kirchdoerffer, general manager of Morristown Performing Arts Center will present its colorful history. There will be a ticket giveaway at the event.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m., the public is invited to join Margaret Sanchez, a small business banker at Kearny Bank, to find out that personal finance does not have to be scary. At this free event, participants will learn about setting up a budget, establishing credit, getting a home or car loan and managing student debt.

On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, at 11 a.m., the AARP will present the AARP Smart Driver classroom course, which could save participants money on car in-

surance. They will refresh driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road; learn techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way and roundabouts, and discover proven driving methods to help stay safe on the road.

Guests must attend both sessions for certification. The cost is $15. for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

On Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., Dr. Ron Felber will discuss his book, “The Mojave Incident: Inspired by a Chilling True Story of Alien Abduction.” He will read from his book, talk about the bona fide research into UFO’s and ET’s, how he met the couple that was abducted, and answer questions. Felber is the author of six books and currently teaches creative writing at Drew University’s Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

Filled Pencil Boxes And Presence Of Hope Accompany Local Missionaries

By Cheryl Conway ore than 500 children in the Dominican Republic should have a new pencil box filled with school supplies next month when 21 local adults and teens engage in a mission to help a community in need.

Parish members of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pompton Plains plan to visit Batey Lecheria from Sunday, Nov. 5 through Sat., Nov. 11 for the Mission of Hope Trip. The ministry group has been visiting this same camp annually for the past 15 years, providing items such as medical and school supplies, bed sheets, soccer balls and cleats, as well as manual labor with a house built last year and a small park this year.

What started with adults only.

The Mission of Hope Ministry Group now invites teens to participate as a “way of teaching our kids what poverty was all about,” says Nancy Baran of Pompton Plains, president of the Mission of Hope Ministry Group out of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.

A lifelong member of the church for 49 years, Baran has been organizing the missions to the Dominican Republic for the past nine years. Her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Dave Laumbach ran the missions for five years before moving to Colorado.

The church’s mission group began after 2003, when Our Lady of Good Counsel Msgr.

in 1995 under a shade tree with a few students, to an old metal shipping container in 2000 at the Batey Lecheria, where 5,000 people with families going back five generations dwell, says Baran.

Scott and McSorely “determined that to successfully educate these children, they first needed to get them healthy so the church built the clinic,” the Fe y Alegria Center, says Baran.

“The initial dispensary was later expanded on

three occasions of which one room was intended to be a meeting room for the community.

However, it quickly became two classrooms which are very much in uses. Currently, there is only space until grade three and there are many classes of each grade.”

Continuing these missions to help this community has become Baran’s passion.

“It really opened our eyes of what poverty really is,” says Baran.

“We live in Pompton Plains with libraries, schools, health care; it really opened up my eyes. I became addicted each year. It’s something

we really look forward to as a family. It’s our way of giving back.”

Planned out every 12 to 18 months, Baran schedules the mission in either March, April, May or November each year. This year’s mission falls during N.J.’s Teacher’s Convention so students will miss just three days of school, Baran says. One year, she planned it over spring break.

tain the school and medical clinic,” says Baran, adding that they usually bring 3,000 pounds of luggage filled with necessary items. “We hand carry,” she explains, to prevent items from being stolen in the airport. Because of limited capacity, Baran says they do not bring clothes to donate.

Each traveler is also asked to bring an extra pair of sneakers to leave behind.

“They say, ‘When you leave can I have your sneakers?,’” says Baran. “We tell all the travelers ‘bring your least favorite pair of sneakers.’ We leave our sneakers there and come home with our flip flops.”

Being there for the people is just as important.

“It’s about our physical presence, not just our presents,” she says. “Finding a child in the streets left to raise himself at the age of 4; taking the kids hand and walking down the street with them. They don’t use soccer balls, they use plastic milk cartons. So we started collecting used soccer balls and cleats. Now they have teams that are formed.”

They have also painted homes “which are really shacks,” Baran says. Last year they built a home for six people living in a tiny shack with half a roof. The family who was renting the shack had a sick three month old baby in critical condition, a father not working

and not able to pay the rent so the landlord would take away pieces of the tin roof for punishment, says Baran.

“We fundraised to pay for the tin roof and wood,” she says. “We built them a four room house.”

This year, they plan to build “a little park,” says Baran.

“The playground will start off fairly simple to stay within our modest budget,” she says. “We are starting off by purchasing sand, cement, stone and other materials.

We’ll be clearing the land, digging and pouring a playground to get the community out of the mud.

We hope to put in a small garden with some plantings. If funds will allow, we hope to purchase a swing set and perhaps some park benches. Whatever we cannot financially complete this year will be expanded upon in future trips.”

As years passed, medical and school supplies will fill their luggage.

“This year we are shipping eight to 10 barrels of supplies,” she says, with 520 filled pencil boxes for each student aged 3 to 10.

“Children aren’t educated beyond 10 due to capacity/space,”

says Baran.

After looking this past year at her kindergarten picture carrying her first pencil box, Baran recalls, “I remember that day carrying my new pencil box.”

So this past spring, they started a pencil box campaign featuring a pencil box or pouch filled with items such as pencils, pens, erasers, markers and glue sticks.

“We will decorate the pencil boxes when we get there,” says Baran. “This is such a massive undertaking; we started this a year before.”

As a manager for her career, Baran says “everyone’s got a job” for the mission. “It’s not just a week’s vacation; it’s not about getting off from school. Everybody had to work.”

With that in mind, 16-year old Abby Pownall of Pompton Plains, a junior at Pequannock Township High School, has taken on the pencil box campaign. The collections began last Easter with an egg tree filled with ornaments requesting donations for the pencil box campaign.

Pownall, who is friends with Baran’s daughter, then approached

the school board to request permission to put collection bins at each of the schools in the district.

“We have collection boxes in the schools and are asking for basic school supplies such as pencil boxes, pink erasers, pencil sharpeners, pens, child-safe scissors, glue, glue sticks, crayons, markers, colored pencils, and rulers,” says Pownall who signed up in early 2017 for this first mission.

“As I have gotten older, I have looked to become more involved in my church,” says Pownall, a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel’s youth ministry group, LOOP. “This trip is something I have heard about since I was in middle school, and always hoped I would be able to do.”

Pownall says “I am looking forward to seeing our group’s efforts make a difference and to help some of the poorest of the poor.

We have all worked hard to collect supplies for the school and for the clinic. When we show up, the supplies we have delivered will immediately be put to use. We are very fortunate to live in a community with such generous people and continued on page 9

Members of the mission group belong to the church or community of Pompton Plains and Pequannock. Each pays for flight, food and lodging.

“They have to be committed,” says Baran. “It’s a financial commitment and time commitment.”

The group stays in a retreat house with basic lodging in Santa Domingo, about 45 minutes from the camp.

“To pay for my trip, I started working at Cedar Crest this summer and I have been saving up money in a “Dominican Trip” jar with birthday money, my Confirmation money and babysitting,” says Pownall.

“I heard many stories from people who had previously gone on this trip about how the people they met touched their hearts,” says Pownall. “Helping others is something I strive to do every day and I am looking forward to being able to make an impact on the lives of others. I have no doubt that this experience will change the way I view the world around me.”

Pownall, who serves as vice president of her student council,

was hopeful in meeting her goal with the pencil box collection.

“The drive at the schools is one avenue for getting the donations,” she says. “So far, we are at approximately 50 percent of our goal but we have a few more weeks of collecting and are hopeful we can give every child their own box. We will also help the children decorate the boxes which should be a really fun project.”

With collections ongoing, school supplies can be dropped in the collection boxes at any of the Pequannock Township schools, or at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at 155 West Parkway, Pompton Plains.

The group is also accepting medical donations for the clinic.

he ASPCA estimates that 7.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Many of these animals are strays, as shelters house about twice as many stray animals as pets given up by their owners.

Lost animals also make up a significant portion of the shelter pet population. Although a great number of shelter animals are reunited with their owners, some shelter animals never reunite with their families.

Pet owners must take steps to reduce the risk that their pets will get lost. Fencing, secure crates and gates and leashes can cut down on the number of escapes.

Crate Crates and carrier kennels are worthwhile investments for pet owners. Many animal trainers advocate for crates when conditioning dogs to be obedient. Smaller crates for cats are ideal when the animal needs some quiet time or

you have to keep the pet away from guests. Kennels with a handle make it easier to transport pets to and from the veterinarian or when taking car rides.

When purchasing a crate, make sure it is large enough to fit the animal while he or she is standing and sitting. The pet should be able to turn around comfortably, but the crate should not be so large that it enables the animal to relieve himself in one end and still have room at the other. Lincoln Park Consignment Shop Open For Business, Supports Church

By Stefanie Sears f Lincoln Park and Montville locals are looking for some decent deals on nice accessories, they might want to consider St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop on Main Street.

St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, formerly St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, started resuming its regular hours on September 6. The shop sells clothing for men, women and children; jewelry, housewares, bric-a-brac, toys, books, and half-priced items.

While Wednesday is a shopping day only, people are welcome to donate items for consignment from Thursday through Saturday.

The consignee receives 60 percent of the item’s sale price with a $0.75 service charge while the church gets 40 percent. Any profit is transferred to Good Shepherd’s General Fund.

Initially the church’s sanctuary before it became a store, St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop opened in 1963 through St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, which changed its name to its current one after it merged with Transfiguration Episcopal Church of Towaco about four years ago.

“The original church was on the corner of Main Street and Zeliff Place,” says Susan Leeds, thrift shop co-chair. “When the parish decided to build a new sanctuary they moved the original sanctuary to its present location and at-

tached it to the existing parish hall.

There are stained glass windows on the sides of the shop and a couple of stairs that led up to the altar area.”

Leeds moved to Lincoln Park in 1971 and immediately became involved with the shop. She is now a co-chair along with Martha Martin.

“We have mostly female shoppers so women’s clothing sells better than men’s,” says Leeds, “Probably women’s clothing sells best along with jewelry and small houseware items. We definitely get all kinds of interesting items as well as some ordinary items.

Right now we have copies of original scores written by Bach and Beethoven framed with pictures of each composer.”

The store follows some strict guidelines for the materials they obtain. Clothing must be clean and hole free. Shoes should be almost new, but women’s bathing suits must be new. They do not accept men’s suits, bowling balls or furniture due to space. After four weeks in the store, items are then donated and profits are gifted to the church.

“Our customers are locals from most of the surrounding towns with many immigrants and others taking advantage of our low prices,” she explains. “Because our customers are mostly women, they buy shirts, pants or blazers

for their husbands, son, etc. but suits just don’t sell. We don’t have room for furniture. We also have shelving in a hallway but we need to keep the aisle free because of a nursery school upstairs. The bowling balls are too heavy for most of our somewhat older volunteers.”

The store is now open for business on Wednesdays, Thursdays,

and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Store items run from $0.50 to $20 whereas products such as fur coats and other luxury items may be more expensive.
