Cat Rescue Center Hosts 2nd Annual Fundraiser To Benefit Homeless And Abused Animals

O

By Dawn M. Chiossi ctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Horrifically this abuse even extends to pets! Eerily similar to the case with children, abusers will threaten the life of a pet, so up to 65 percent of women will not leave because of the threat of danger to their furry family members. Always on the lookout to help those animals who cannot help themselves, Only Kindness Cat Rescue in Wayne is sponsoring its 2nd annual fundraiser to benefit homeless and abused animals by enlightening the need for pet-friendly domestic violence centers. These amazing advocates are making a difference in the lives of both humans and their pets. Animal lovers everywhere are invited

to join this worthwhile cause at Ariane’s Kitchen and Bar in Verona, Thursday, Oct. 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets purchased before Sept. 30 will be $100; tickets purchased after will be $125. With this fundraiser, participants can give voices to these sweet animals who cannot speak for themselves. According to the most recent 2016 New Jersey State Police Annual Domestic Violence report, there were 63,420 domestic abuse cases reported. That means since 62 percent of all American homes have pets, 40,000 of these victims in New Jersey may have nowhere to turn to protect their pet family members. As of now, only three percent of shelters accommodate pets. The folks at Only Kindness Rescue organization are seeking to change that. The goal of the fundraiser is not only to raise awareness about this very real issue, it is to raise funds to help domestic violence shelters add a safe space for pets so that families may escape abuse with their pets, so they don’t have to give them up or leave them in danger. Last year’s What About Me? Fundraiser was a rousing success; raising more than $20k, bringing light to this heartbreaking issue of domestic abuse. It is hoping to raise even more this year. With more than 10 years of saving lives, Only Kindness Cat Rescue does more than just care for animals and help them find forever homes; it diligently works to change policies and improve the treatment of animals throughout the community. Founded in 2005, Only Kindness is a no-kill, non-profit rescue organization, they are staunch champions for animals in need. According to Founder and Executive Director of Only Kindness Cat Rescue Organization, Mary Linn Lombardo,

“Proceeds will go to help homeless animals who need care and to help make it easier for victims of domestic violence to escape abuse with their pets, or find temporary safe places for them so that no family pet is ever left behind.” Passionate about protecting these animals, Lombardo remarks, “This year we are hosting a more intimate affair, one that we can all have fun together while working to raise funds for such a serious cause and much needed service. Our mission is to help families. All family members are affected by domestic violence, including pet family members and provide them with comfort.” Featured at this year’s fundraiser will be continued on page 2
