Wayne Township Proclaims Tuesday A Day Of Giving

By Anya Bochman aurelwood Arboretum, a 30acre botanical oasis in Pines Lake, Wayne, was founded by John and Dorothy Knippenberg in the 1940s. Starting out as a nursery specializing in rhododendrons and azaleas, it was developed by its owners into a lush display of woodlands, gardens and rocks before being deeded to Wayne following the death of John Knippenberg.

Today, the property is part of the township’s park system, and contains some of the same rhododendrons and trees that were planted nearly 80 years ago. The historic flowers and trees remain beautiful and fragrant, but in desperate need of maintenance and repair. The arboretum’s antiquated 1950s irrigation system, which supports all that blooms on the property, was described by longtime Laurelwood volunteer Ruth Hayden as being “held together by duct tape.”

Though the arboretum has staunch support from members of the community and local government, it is in desperate need of

funding. The problem, as explained

by Alice Moskowitz, President of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, is one of a lack of awareness.

“There is not a lot of support from the business community,” Moskowitz said. “We want to expand our audience – we hope businesses and individuals will learn of this wonderful place and help expand our donor base.”

As part of this endeavor, Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that encourages philanthropy and celebrates generosity worldwide. Held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the day follows the popular shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The idea behind the initiative is to inspire people to support nonprofit organizations in their community.

“We asked the mayor [Christopher Vergano] to make a proclamation,” Moskowitz said. “This will benefit not only Laurelwood, but any other non-profit organization.”

Chabad Of Wayne Aims For Youth-Friendly Judaism With Program For Teens

By Anya Bochman n this Jewish New Year, Chabad of Passaic County in Wayne reached out to teens of all affiliations through its CTeen program to join a Rosh Hashana minyan on Sept. 21 and 22.

Described as an “interactive prayer experience and shofar blowing,” the event, which was led by Chani Gurkov, tried to dispel notions that Judaism is not relatable to the youth.

“We don’t want kids to ‘get over’ Judaism as soon as they’re done with their bar mitzva, and only return to it later in life for a wedding or other event,” Gurkov said.

CTeen – which stands for “Chabad Teen” - offers a number of programs with the goal of educating adolescents about Jewish tradition; other endeavors include humanitarian and volunteer opportunities, as well as social events.

Wayne’s chapter kicked off its first event in September, and continued the organization’s mission with the Rosh Hashana minyan, which was attended by 12 teen-

agers. The teens involved range in ages from seventh grade to high school seniors, and participate in a spectrum of activities, from Jewish holiday celebrations to giving back to the community by reaching out to sick children.

Gurkov stresses that teen involvement can be brought about via Judaism’s speaking the language of the youth; a Chabad Teen Network pamphlet, for instance, uses youthful slang words and references to technology.

“God doesn’t carry an Android or an iPhone, but He’s always on call,” reads the quote on page one of the pamphlets.

“Kids are so caught up in technological advances, homework, being on the best teams, getting into the best schools – religion gets pushed to the back burner,” Gurkov says. “We try to make [Judaism] appealing, appetizing and in the teen’s language.”

Donations are made directly to participating organizations but reported to the #GivingTuesday program.

FOLA is promoting the initiative with the hashtag #LovingLaurelwoodArboretum, in hopes of reaching its fundraising goal of $5,000 for the Laurelwood Arboretum Plant Restoration Fund and $8,000 for the Laurelwood Arboretum Irrigation Improvement Program.

“We don’t have any water, which is the lifeblood of the plants,” said Hayden. “We hope the community supports us so we can keep the arboretum open for

everyone to enjoy.”

As part of the campaign, FOLA has come up with an interactive experience that will see a large red heart placed somewhere in the arboretum. Visitors will be invited to find the heart and post their photographs of it online, using the “LovingLaurelwoodArboretum” hashtag.

“We want people to recognize what an asset the arboretum is to the community,” Moskowitz stated. “We need to bring knowledge to people about this great place.”

Three New Science Labs Coming To Wayne Valley High School

By Jason Cohen he Wayne Township Board of Education recently approved funding for three new science labs and a variety of electrical upgrades at Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills High Schools.

This $455,000 project is the first phase of a five-year project that will lead to a complete renovation of all high school science classrooms over the next three years.

The district will begin the project by upgrading physics rooms at Wayne Valley High School and a new life sciences lab at Wayne Hills High School. Each of the spaces included in phase I will get a complete renovation designed to promote flexible delivery of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

A key component of project is the use of the latest generation of flat screen interactive video displays (two per room) featuring touch screen input. These first three rooms the “pilot program” for this series of lab improvements. The users of the

new phase I spaces can provide important observations based on actual experience that can positively influence the next phases of the project.

Brian Faehndrich, the assistant principal at Wayne Valley High School, who is the supervisor of technology and sciences and family and consumer sciences, commended the board on approving funding for new science labs.

Faehndrich explained that these new labs will help enhance the STEM program, which launched in the district three years ago.

“I think there’s a big awakening across the board in high school in general that these things (modern science labs) need to be there,” Faehndrich said.

Faehndrich explained there needs to be more space in STEM classrooms to do hands on projects, unlike 15 or 20 years ago when kids sat at desks. Kids will now have the opportunity to do robotics, use 3-d printing, create model drones, learn about biochemistry and much more.

According to Faehndrich,

these new labs will allow students to get numbers, rather than just make observations. He stressed that these new labs will provide the kids with the opportunities to be ready to pursue a career in the field of science.

The construction of the new classrooms began in October for one lab at Hills and one at Valley.

Both classrooms are expected to be complete by winter break and the other in Valley will be finished by the end of the school year.

“Being able to do these things, (teach STEM) requires taking these first steps,” Faehndrich said.

“I think the community recognizes that STEM careers are a large portion of careers today.”

Before the minyan, the teens created a graffiti mural covered with Rosh Hashana symbols they looked up on their phones.

“They used technology to create something Judaic, and everyone loved it,” says Gurkov.

On Friday, shortly before the traditional blowing of the shofar, Gurkov sat down at a table with two new CTeen members and explained various Rosh Hashana tra-

ditions, such as buying a new item of clothing or trying a new fruit to mark the beginning of the new year.

Passing around a plate with an Asian pear and a pepino melon, she instructed the girls in traditional Hebrew prayers said on this occasion.

CTeen is open to all Jewish teens, regardless of affiliation.

“At Chabad, we’re welcoming and non-judgmental,” Gurkov states. “We don’t care how often a teen attends services, or how observant they are.”

Woodcarvers To Hold Craft Show At Wayne PAL

orth Jersey Woodcarvers plans to hold its annual Arts and Craft Show on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, at the Wayne Police Athletic League.

The show will feature woodcarvings and arts and crafts from local artists, who all share a passion for creating and exhibiting their art to the community. Attendees can purchase work for sale directly from the artists.

“It’s a great opportunity for folks to see firsthand how talented their neighbors can be,” said Jerry Cetrulo, chair of the local chapter. “People

come to the event and are surprised when they see the work. They are given the rare opportunity to actually meet the artist to learn more about the process and inspiration behind creating the art.”

The show also offers a chance for artists to win awards and recognition. Artists compete in a number of selective categories for beginners and experienced artisans. Judges review the work and award the best every year.

Octoberfest, Guitar Concerts Planned At Wayne Library

usic for Octoberfest and a guitar concert are scheduled at the Wayne Public Library this October.

The library will host an Octoberfest, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. featuring Peter and the Wolf-Gang.

The Wolf-Gang Band members have been friends and musical associates for more than 25 years. They have performed together in various configurations, such as Big Band Orchestras, Jazz ensembles and many other musical organizations.

Formed in the interest of promoting and preserving a unique niche of culturally based music, the band is focused on original instrumentation, offering a pure musical presentation. It represents the ability of people of dif-

ferent cultures to come together and celebrate family, each other and life. The band members are Bruce Schaffel and Tom Wise clarinet; Peter Stern on trombone; and Everett Fink on tuba.

There will be a Sunday guitar concert with Justin Sabaj on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. in the library.

Sabaj is a guitarist who picks songs from a diverse pool, spanning not just one genre or decade but many, and then arranges the material for solo electric guitar because- in his opinion- the electric guitar just sounds so good! He studied jazz performance at William Paterson University.

Stop Your Pet From Becoming A ‘Hairy Houdini’

he ASPCA estimates that 7.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Many of these animals are strays, as shelters house about twice as many stray animals as pets given up by their owners.

Lost animals also make up a significant portion of the shelter pet population. Although a great number of shelter animals are reunited with their owners, some shelter animals never reunite with their families.

Pet owners must take steps to reduce the risk that their pets will get lost. Fencing, secure crates and gates and leashes can cut down on the number of escapes.

Crate Crates and carrier kennels are worthwhile investments for pet owners. Many animal trainers advocate for crates when conditioning dogs to be obedient. Smaller crates for cats are ideal when the animal needs some quiet time or

you have to keep the pet away from guests. Kennels with a handle make it easier to transport pets to and from the veterinarian or when taking car rides.

When purchasing a crate, make sure it is large enough to fit the animal while he or she is standing and sitting. The pet should be able to turn around comfortably, but the crate should not be so large that it enables the animal to relieve himself in one end and still have room at the other. If you want to purchase a larger crate for a pet that will grow, divide the crate with a piece of wood or mesh so the animal has only the room it needs.

Fencing Fences not only may make for good neighbors, but they also can regulate pets’ behavior and make pets safer. Pet fencing can include one fence that encloses the entire perimeter of your property, a dog “run” that is an enclosed area strictly for the dog within the yard

or a combination of both. Cats have an innate climbing ability, which may make fencing less effective for outdoor cats. However, cat owners may want to invest in a wire cat box extension that fits onto a window and allows a cat access to fresh air while preventing them from running away.

Fencing should be tall enough to deter vertical leaps and climbing, but you also must contend

with animals that might attempt to tunnel under the fence. Digging chicken wire or another deterrent several inches below the ground when installing a fence can help prevent dogs from getting out of the yard. Speak with a fencing manufacturer and installer about pet-friendly fence options.

Leashes Even the most well-trained pet may get distracted from time to time and dart away. That is why it is important to keep pets leashed when outdoors and away from fenced-in areas.

Leashes come in a variety of sizes and styles. It’s important to choose a leash and collar that is proportionate to your pet and one that he or she will not be able to slip out of. Pet owners who have larger, stronger animals can consider a harness, which fits around continued on page 17

Vietnam War Films To Be Shown At Wayne Public Library

he Wayne Public Library is one of 50 U.S. public libraries selected by the American Library Association and WETA Washington, D.C., to show all 10 episodes of “The Vietnam War” by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.

Wayne Hills Marching Band Preps For Season, Plans Festival

ighty-four members of the Wayne Hills Patriot Marching Band, along with a staff of 12, spent a week at Camp Canadensis in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, where they learned and practiced the field show that they will present both at football games and competitions throughout the fall. Leading the group were Marching Band Director Edward Easse and Assistant Director Matthew Paterno. Though the show lasts just more than eight

minutes, it takes hours of hard work and dedication to bring it from paper to performance before thousands of spectators.

At their first competitive appearance at Jefferson High School, they placed first in class 3-A with a score of 82.045.

On Oct. 21, the band and band boosters will sponsor the New Jersey Music Educators Association Marching Band Festival in the stadium at Wayne Hills, with 17 bands from all over New

Jersey appearing in two segments.

Rather than competing against each other, the bands will be judged on their own merits, and will be awarded a rating of gold, silver or bronze. ccording to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activities. Carbon dioxide is naturally present in the Earth’s atmosphere as part of its carbon cycle, but human activity is altering that cycle by adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. In addition to adding more carbon dioxide to that natural cycle, human activity is influencing the ability of natural sinks, such as oceans, forests and plants, to remove carbon from the atmosphere. The combustion of fossil fuels for energy and transportation is the primary carbon dioxide-emitting human activity. In fact, the EPA notes that electricity, transportation and industry are the three main sources of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. Electricity ac-
