Cemetery in Butler, their project bearing fruit as most of the approximately four hundred headstones, which had been severely vandalized for the last 50 years, knocked over and in pieces, have been fixed. “No more” says Riley. “Every stone has been reset and repaired.” The trio collected $1,500 in donations, and a new sign has been placed at the cemetery. To prevent future vandalism, the cemetery is under 24-hour video surveillance.

“The worst desecration, the Veterans’ graves,” says Riley, who was recognized as Bloomingdale’s Hometown Historian during its Centennial Celebration in 2018, and whose great-great grandmother, great grandfather, and many other relatives on both sides of his family are buried in Manning Avenue Cemetery. Manning Avenue Cemetery contains much history; Butler, yes, but also United Sates history. The earliest known burial is continued on page 2

Cemetery Restored... continued from front page 1808 and there are possibly unmarked graves prior to that date. There are two Revolutionary War veterans, two veterans from the War of 1812, 26 Civil War veterans, one from World War I, two from World War II, and one Korean War veteran. Originally the Francisco Family Cemetery, it was incorporated as the Bloomingdale Cemetery Association in 1867. Interestingly, the cemetery predates the formation of the town of Butler in 1901. “It was reorganized as the Butler-Bloomingdale Cemetery Association in 1895, and when the last association member died, the cemetery fell into a state of neglect and that’s when the vandalism started,” claims Riley, who is writing a book (his sixth) about Man-

ning Avenue Cemetery. It will include a history, photos of every gravestone, and obituaries and biographies of some of those buried. No one after 1984 remained to care for the property, and then senseless vandalism ensued. The ledger book and remaining association funds of the cemetery association, but not ownership or the cemetery, became the property of the Borough of Butler. Except for mowing the grass around the toppled gravestones and efforts by a few folks to restore, little could be done to address the issue. After completing a project that documented the burials at the Brown/Sanders Cemetery for the Butler Museum in 2016, Riley embarked on the same for Manning Ave-

nue Cemetery. However, when Bird got involved, discussion of total restoration took place, both deciding to locate as many buried and knocked over headstones they could and manually lift them. Meier then stepped in and used his masonry skills to repair the broken stones and set them back in place. The goal, which had previously been documenta-

tion of the burials, became a complete cemetery restoration. The restoration was completed in the fall of 2018, and Riley’s upcoming Manning Avenue Cemetery book fulfills the documentation end. For Riley, Bird, and Meier, it’s about history, and remembering and respect for that past and its people.

“Creative City” Set to Open Doors in Pompton Plains

ith 20 years of experience in the community, it’s no secret that Katty Cedeno has a love for the arts. Her passion has driven her to open beautiful art studios catered to children and families in the New Jersey Area. This love for art began early on in her life. Growing up she spent time painting and teaching her family how to use art as a form of therapy. Butler Public Library Happy to be a Baby Box Distribution Center

By Steve Sears he Butler Public Library since June 2017 has been a Baby Box Distribution Center. Originated in Finland, Baby Boxes are maternity packages given for free to expectant mothers that contain needs for a baby, such as diapers and breast pads, as well as providing a comfortable, safe sleeping space. The library has given out a total of approximately 93 Baby Boxes thus far. “We’ve had it for a few years,” says Luis Rodriguez, Library Director, noting the original amount of Baby Boxes received was 60 and has been replenished. “The way it started is we got contacted by Baby Box Company. The New Jersey State Department of Health identified Sudden Infant Death

Syndrome as a health problem and, based on the experiences with the Baby Boxes in Finland, they hired a company to help distribute Baby Boxes.” Expectant moms can register and claim their Baby Boxes at www.babyboxco.com. The process is a simple one. Log on and watch a short training course video for your particular region, take a quiz, and a certificate of completion is awarded, which must be printed, and a screenshot taken. The certificate and email address registered with the certificate must be brought to the library to collect the Baby Box. “The idea is by putting a very small child in the Baby Box, you decrease the possibility of SIDS. What we’ll do is somebody will call and say, ‘I took the Baby Box test,’ and eventually they come, and we

give them the box, and too we’ll help them take them to their car. They seem very happy and we’re more than happy to do this. It’s not a burden and we’re not overwhelmed. It’s a good cause and that’s why we like doing it,” affirms Rodriguez.

Of note is the fact that the Butler Public Library gets contacted by expectant moms from all over. “The closest one, when we started, was one in Bergen County,” explains Rodriguez, “and maybe that’s why we were called. continued on page 9

January is Radon Action Month in Pompton Lakes, Encourage Monitoring Radon Levels Throughout Year

By Anya Bochman he New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first declared January to be Radon Action Month in 1999; this tradition continues with Governor Phil Murphy’s office and a number of state municipalities. The program is designed to coincide with a national initiative dedicated to promoting radon awareness, testing and mitigation, as well as radon resistant new construction. Pompton Lakes is one of the boroughs that will be participating in the initiative; on January 4, Mayor Michael Serra announced that Pompton Lakes will cooperate with the NJDEP Radon Section in a special radon awareness program to promote testing for the radioactive gas in homes. “We are pleased to cooperate with the DEP in this program to ensure that all residents are aware of the need to test homes and reduce radon levels where necessary,” Serra stated. “Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. Radon testing is easy and problems can be fixed.” The reason behind the choice of month is that the

winter season, with its use of heating, is the most opportune time for radon testing and detection. Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when uranium breaks down in the soil and in rock formations. Small amounts of uranium are found in nearly all soils and rocks. Radon gas moves up through the soil and finds its way into homes through cracks in the foundation and openings around sump pumps, pipes and drains. Long term or chronic exposure to radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, and the second-leading cause of lung cancer among smokers, according to the EPA. The greater the concentration and the longer a person is exposed, the greater the risk of developing lung cancer. Although there is truly no safe level of radon, since lung cancer can result from very low exposures, studies have found that the risk does go down as the radon concentration decreases. Both the NJDEP and the EPA recommend that a home be mitigated if its test results indicate radon levels of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of radon or higher. “Homeowners who tested continued on page 11

Identifying and Addressing Pet Pain

hen children are in pain, they often verbally express that discomfort to their parents. But pet parents know that no such expressions can be made by the family pet, who may suffer in silence for several days or even weeks until its owners notice a problem. Since pets often can’t express any discomfort or pain they’re feeling only heightens the importance pet owners must place on detecting any abnormal behaviors their pets might exhibit that indicate the animals are in pain. Schedule routine checkups for all pets in the household. Because pets don’t always exhibit telltale signs that they are dealing with pain, it’s important that pet owners schedule routine checkups for their pets. The veterinarian can identify when a pet is in pain, even if the warning signs are subtle. Such checkups are important for all pets, even for those pets who appear as active and happy as they always have. The ASPCA notes that, when one family pet is dealing with pain, it’s not uncommon for other household pets that are otherwise healthy to start exhibiting the same abnormal behaviors

as the pet that’s in pain. The healthy pets are reacting to the changes and distress of the sick animal, and such reactions can prove unhealthy to the pets who actually have nothing wrong with them. Owners of elderly pets in pain may feel as though euthanasia is their only option. No pet owner wants to prolong the suffering of their pet, but in some instances there are alternatives to euthanasia. Pet hospice care is an option for pets suffering from a terminal illness without a cure. Unlike hospice care for humans, pet hospice care is done at home. A veterinarian will work with the pet owner,

teaching him or her how to provide intensive home care that emphasizes making the final days of the animal’s life as comfortable and pain free as possible. Pet owners considering hospice care should know that it’s a significant commitment of time and resources and it may disrupt daily life. Kinnelon Public Library Hosts New Monthly Reading Challenge

By Dawn M Chiossi nspiring everyone to pick up a book and explore the delights of them, Kinnelon Public Library is currently hosting a new monthly reading challenge program sponsored by the Friends of the Kinnelon Public Library. Founded in 1979, the Friends of the Kinnelon Public Library are a dedicated group of volunteers eager to establish the library as the educational, informational, and cultural center for people of all ages in the community. Officials at the Kinnelon Public Library can relate. Keeping things fun, different and interesting, their new monthly reading challenge is described as reading three particular

books per month. These books will be featured on a provided reading list. In a fun twist, depending on the theme of month, reader’s book selections will be different. For example, February›s reading challenge will feature the theme of love stories for Valentine’s Day and English Mystery Detective stories for April. Additionally, the event will feature a raffle where readers could win a prize such as an Amazon Gift Card and more. There is no sign up and everyone is on their honor system to read the books in the assigned month. According to officials at the library, the program was the brainchild of Program Coordi-

nator and Club Sponsor, Kim Christian. “I invented it,” she quips. Bright and enthusiastic, Chris-

oo many p e o p l e downplay the threat of identity theft because it hasn’t been witnessed or experienced firsthand. This false sense of security can leave you exposed, especially during tax season. Here are some tips to keep your identity safe from scammers: 1. Be naturally suspicious.Understand that there are people out there trying to get your information, and others willing to pay for it. With that knowledge, be suspicious of anyone asking for personal information — especially your Social Security number (SSN). Even when a

known vendor asks for your SSN, ask what they will be using it for and refuse most requests unless you deem it nec-essary. 2. File your tax return as soon as possible. A popular tax scam is to file a fake tax return and deposit the refund into the thief’s account, all before you get the chance to file your own return. You close the door on scammers once your tax return is filed with the IRS. 3. Shred (don’t just crumple) your documents. Get in the habit of shredding all paperwork before it’s thrown out to keep personal information from falling into the wrong hands.

If you don’t own a shredder, contact your bank or other local community services as they often offer free shredding services on specific days. 4. Keep your Social Security card safe. Only carry your Social Security card with you when it’s needed for a specific purpose. Your wallet or purse is not a good permanent spot for your card. Any criminal would have a treasure trove of personal data if it were to get lost or stolen along with your driver’s license and credit cards. 5. Periodically check your credit reports. Kilroy (junior, 174-pound weight class) had a 14-1 overall record in competitions through January 10. He is listed as a Health and Exercise Science major. Rua (sophomore, 141-pound weight class) had an overall record of 11-7 in matches through January 10. He is listed as a Health and Exercise Science major as well. The Lions had a dual meet record of 4-1 after five matches. Eric Johnson-Alford (Passaic County Tech) is on the roster as a junior forward

for the Caldwell University men’s basketball team this year. Johnson-Alford, listed as a Computer Science major competed in four games for Caldwell through January 11 and had 23 rebounds and average 9.3 points per game during that span. After 15 regular season games, the Cougars had an overall record of 7-8 and they were 4-2 on their home court. In the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) they had a mark of 3-3. Cameron Buffy (Passaic County Tech) is on the roster as a competitor in the 141-pound weight class for the Centenary University (Hackettstown) wrestling team this season. Wirsing played in each of the first 16 regular season games and started in 15 of them for Montclair State. During that time, she averaged 7.8 points per game and had 97 rebounds. She led her team with 37 assists and 22 blocks through 16 games. Through January 12, the Red Hawks posted an overall record of 11-5 and they were 8-1 on their home court. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) they had a mark of 8-1. Dayna Wich (Pompton Lakes High School) is a ju-

nior guard and small forward for the Centenary University (Hackettstown) women’s basketball team this season. Wich played in each of the first 13 regular season games and started in nine of them for Centenary. She had 29 blocks, six steals and five blocks during that span. Wich is listed as a Criminal Justice major. Through 13 games, the Cyclones had an overall record of 3-10 with a 3-3 mark in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Kristine Verbeke, a graduate of Wayne Valley High School is junior listed as a Nursing major on the roster of the Felician University (Lodi) women’s bowling squad this year. Pennsylvania in November. She also had her team’s fourth top time so far this season in the 1,000 free with a time of 12:06.15 in a meet versus The College of New Jersey in October.
