Deadline for entry is Monday, Nov. 26, and in addition to getting the satisfactory number of teams, D’Amato also encourages spectators to come. “Spectators we would hope would be coming to support the teams in the event,” he says. “The story of it [the idea for the tourney] is I had a barbeque in my backyard,” he explains. “It was a family barbeque and we did a tournament of our own, a

friendly thing. So, my son Bryan said, ‘This would be a really neat fundraiser for the fire department. We could do that and get a bunch of teams in.’ So, that’s really where it started, and we ran with it,” explains D’Amato. Cornhole, which was invented by Heylinger de Windt in 1883 and is popular in North America and Europe, resembles horseshoes, with a board on each side and a center hole. Each competitor gets an equal amount of bean bags, which they tempt to toss into the hole. D’Amato further explains. “When you get the bean bag in the hole it’s three points, and if you land on the board it’s one point,” he says. “You play to 21 like you do in horseshoes, and continued on page 3

Choose To Shine As Bloomingdale Recognizes Bully Prevention Month

By Dawn M. Chiossi xtremely concerned about the issue of bullying, Bloomingdale recently recognized the month of October as Bully Prevention Month. Over at the Bloomingdale Free Public Library in conjunction with Elisa DiChristina, MSW, LCSW, Owner of “Glow Kids,” and Author of “Are You a Glow Kid?” sponsored their recent program, “Choose To Shine” on Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Held at the Bloomingdale Senior Center, children of all ages and their parents were invited to hear author Elisa DiChristina read her book, “Are You a Glow Kid?,” a storybook program for positive youth development. Seeking to empower pre and elementary school children, the story and program encourages children to develop positive life skills, insights and character development while appreciat-

ing individuality. The program strives for them to develop a healthy self-concept and life perspective. Choose to Shine is filled with positive messages such as: “You have a voicespeak out; you have a choicechoose kindness; and stand united against bullying.” According to Children’s Library Coordinator Linda Bennett, the program is about teaching children to radiate light, teaching coping skills, being proactive, taking confident stands against bullying rather than being reactive. In addition, the program also encourages parents to become involved as well, empowering them, giving them advice for proactive discussions on the issue as bullying as well. The “Choose to Shine” program was developed to help enhance Bloomingdale’s Stigma Free community, and they were thrilled with the turnout and response. “It was a wonderful program,” Bennett says, praising all the efforts of everyone involved. continued from front page suicide last month due to bullying,” she shares candidly. “I try so hard to enforce the whole bully prevention theme in schools, during my story times and programs at the library.” For the kids out there, this program seems to be working. Bennett shares just how affected she became when she looked at one of the participant’s crafts. “This little boy drew himself with only one eye as he had been pounded and injured by a bully,” she explains. “It shows that the kids really get it, much more than we as adults give them credit for. With empowering programs like these, to start a dialogue, they can accomplish so much.”

Passionate regarding the issue of bullying and helping others, Bennett relates, “The school readings I did last year (once a month to the two elementary schools) focused on Bully Free, Anti-Stigma, Fill Your Bucket with Kindness, and Sharing Is Caring themes. The same themes are being carried through this year.” Bennett shares that she has been posting on three separate Facebook pages in her area. “Each day I try to post a different anti-bullying poster with an invitation to the program,” she says. “I guess the reason why I was so adamant about a program is due to the fact that a young boy from my hometown committed

The idea is to have a great night out and have fun.” The evening of the 30th will be a double elimination competition with 10 sets of boards set up, indoor at the fireman’s hall at 97 Hamburg Turnpike. “It will be a double elimination tournament until we get down to the last two and we’ll go from there,” he says. Hot dogs with fixings and French fries, prepared by the firemen, and tap beer and soda will be served during the evening.

D’Amato also adds as a close that the Bloomingdale Fire Department is always looking for good, dedicated people to join. “It’s very rewarding to give back to the community you live in,” he says. risten Katko will teach a basic Christmas felting project at the Kinnelon Library on Dec. 5. There will be two sessions, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The classes offer an opportunity to learn the basics of this creative medium. Participants will bring

home a completed reindeer to display this holiday season. The class is suitable for beginners and those who have more experience. All are welcome. The cost for materials is $5 per person, due upon registration.

Led by stylist Michele Arnold, the hair braiding classes will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 12 for two age groups. A Parent and Me session, for children ages 4 to 8, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Basic Braids will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. for children ages 9 and up. Space is limited, and registration is required. Girls should come with freshly brushed, detangled

hair, and bring a hairbrush. Sanitized combs will be provided for braiding. A free guitar lesson will be presented by Real Brave Audio of Oakland on Nov. 26, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pompton Lakes students in grades 3 through 5 are invited. Each child will be given a three-quarter size acoustic guitar to use for the class. Students will be taught basic chords and will be able to play a song together by the end of the class. Tips On Caring For Disabled Dogs

og disabilities could be a result of illness, physical injury or accidents. Just because your dog is disabled, it should not stop you from enjoying its company. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to help the dog live a normal life and cope with the situation. Below are a few tips to keep your dog happy and healthy, even with its disability. Assist their movements. Dogs who suffer from mobility problems, such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, spinal disorders, DM in dogs (degenerative myelopathy) or other medical problems that affects their hind legs will need plenty of help moving around. To make things easier for you

and the dog, you can buy a special leash that supports its torso and back legs. There are also other tools that assist in mobility problems, such as dog wheelchairs that can be strapped to its back. If you are

going to take the dog out to the vet, you will need to carry it into the car since it might have a hard time getting in. You can also use a small and improvised ramp that will help it walk into the car.

Watch their weight. Like humans, overweight dogs have a higher chance of getting sick compared to dogs that stay within their ideal weight. Exercise and a balanced diet are the only things you really need to worry about when it comes to your dog’s weight. Make sure it gets the right amount of exercise by taking it out for walks or jogs. You can also let it run around in an open area like your backyard, front lawn or park. Never overfeed or underfeed your dog. Use a good dog food mix or you can feed them meat that you prepared. Now libraries can do the same thing for the body: Tempting taste buds, inspiring people to eat healthy, and celebrating fresh food, Field Goods Produce Year Round Delivery Service will bring the succulent tastes of the farmer’s market to customers, offering and delivering fresh produce to area libraries. Since October 11, in a brand new pilot program, area libraries including Wayne, Totowa, Little Falls, West Orange and Bloomingdale have become pick-up locations for this innovative service. Field Goods was founded in 2011 with a mission of celebrating fresh food and bringing it

from small farms to consumers at workplaces and community sites everywhere. Armed with passion and a strong belief of the positive power of food, small business, and helping others, Field Goods was founded by Donna Williams after she completed an agricultural development consulting project to identify ways to grow farming in Greene County where she lived. Included in the purchase will be a fun, witty and educational newsletter entitled “Out Of the Bag,” which will describe the contents of the weekly deliveries and provide suggestions recipe links. Additionally, the price will include $1 contribution to go to the specific library to support it, and their continuing efforts to bring programs, events and activities to their communities. Once signed up, every Friday Field Goods will send an email “In the Bag” alert with the fruits and vegetables that will be in the bag that week. Patrons have until Monday at 11 a.m. to decide if they want the bag for that week. Pickups will be on Thursdays.

The Field Goods program offers a myriad of benefits to so many: from consumers, to wellness in general, to partnering with farms and farmers, selling their unique products to a new market at a fair price, this is a win-win situation for everyone. And libraries are thrilled. Over at the Wayne Public Library, Director Doreen Shorba states, “Field Goods is very popular. We have about a half dozen regulars so far that really enjoy getting their fruits and vegetables from the library.” Patricia Perugino, director of the Bloomingdale Free Public Library likes the idea of promoting eating healthy while supporting small farms. When asked if she participates in the program herself, she states, “I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in Field Goods. It has been healthy, enjoyable and educational.” She is impressed with the selections offered. “The month of October even offered purple foods such as Chinese Eggplant, Purple Viking Potatoes, and Concord Grapes,” says Perugino. Anne Krautheim, director of Totowa Library, is extremely enthusiastic regarding the program. “It really makes sense as we are a community center,” says Krautheim. “This service really comes full circle. We provide our patrons access to fresh fruits and vegetables and help local farmers. It enables families to try something new and different and Field Goods makes it so easy.” She mentions that the program really took off during the spring and summer months, when they first participated in it. “The staff loves it, many are weekly customers,” says

Krautheim. “One staff member Brian Sedita started a Meatless Monday cooking demonstration using the Field Goods ingredients, and was even able to get an eight year old to try broccoli rabe. The feedback from the patrons has been overwhelmingly positive, stating that they love the adventure of cooking and trying new things.” Krautheim adds that a patron’s son loves to prepare a gourmet meal with the ingredients! Krautheim herself is a customer as well who enjoys the variety of options and trying new vegetables. “Have you ever tried Kohlrabi? It’s delicious,” she quips. “The produce is so fresh and it’s packed in such an environmentally friendly way that

you just can’t help loving this company. Sometimes I feel like I am on that cooking show Chopped.” Perhaps the moment that stands out in her mind the most regarding the program was launching the idea of Field Goods at the Totowa Library. Krautheim shares that she wanted to do it in a big way. “I ordered some farm props from Oriental Trading and encouraged the staff to dress up like farmers so we could pose on Facebook,” she says, adding that she reached out to Field Goods and the post was sent out to hundreds of people. ccording to the State of the Nation’s Housing 2018 report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, nearly half of all renters are paying more than 30 percent of their income on housing. The report also noted that, between 1990 and 2016, national median rent rose 20 percent faster than overall inflation. That’s likely one reason why many people within the United States are leaving behind states that have traditionally been associated with high costs of living. An analysis of data from Realtor. com found that many Americans are leaving states with high costs of living, high taxes and lagging job markets in favor

of places with more affordable costs of living. After examining data from the U.S. Census Bureau and using its own search data of homes across the nation, Realtor.com found that the state of New York had the highest negative net migration in the United States. That means more people were leaving the state of New York to live elsewhere than any other state in the country. Cost of living no doubt drives much of that migration, as a survey from the Council for Community and Economic Research found that, in the first quarter of 2018, New York was the third most expensive state to live in the United States, behind only Hawaii and California.
