Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, this is the world’s largest single day food drive in the nation, traditionally held on the second Saturday in May. This year marks the 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, when letter carriers aspire to help aid with the problem of hunger in their respective communi-

ties. Since 1993, this long running event has occurred in more than 10,000 cities and towns. This program is an outgrowth of a tradition of community service from the National Association of Letter Carriers over the last 125 years. Early on they decided that the ideal time for the food drive should be held in the spring, because most of the food donations are received over the holidays, making the shelves less plentiful in the continued on page 4

Kinnelon’s Lewit Signs to Play Basketball for Muhlenberg College

By Melissa A. Kay ust in time to coincide with March Madness, Kinnelon teen Bobby Lewit is living out his own basketball dreams as he was recently signed to play for Muhlenberg College’s beloved basketball team. A standout player since elementary school, practice has certainly paid off for the sports-minded senior, who will start college in August, putting his skills to the test alongside the college’s best and brightest athletes. According to Lewit’s head coach for the past four seasons, Matt Arroyo, a Social Studies teacher at the high school, Lewit is a hardworking athlete and student, meaning he’ll make the most of his college experience, both on and off the court. As for “off the court?” He’ll be majoring in Business, as per Coach Arroyo. As a four-year Varsity Basketball player at Kinnelon High School, Lewit is well-prepared to take the next step, giving Muhlenberg basketball fans a new face to

cheer for. Coach Arroyo is proud to share, “Bobby finished as Kinnelon HS’s all-time leading scorer in Boys’ Basketball history

seen shooting in his backyard and in the gym. He was also a great teammate and a two year captain.” Dedication and determination - two traits Lewit will need to hold on to as he progresses from the Colts to college. Unsurprisingly, Coach Arroyo noted how excited Lewit was to be accepted at Muhlenberg when he learned of the news in January. “He can’t wait to start his academic and athletic career there.” Lewit’s teammates are rooting for him, and Coach Arroyo is, “very proud of Bobby and happy that he is going to a school that will fit his skill set on the basketball court.” Between academics and athletics, there will be little time for much else, but hopefully Lewit will get a few free

moments to do some of his favorite things, which Coach Arroyo lists as hanging out with friends, working out, lifeguarding, and spending time with his family. Based upon Lewit’s love for the game and his awesome abilities, playing college hoops will only make him fonder and more focused. And Coach Arroyo has faith in one of his finest players and a gem of advice, “Bobby has to maintain the level of dedication and effort that he has shown during his four year high school career. Playing college basketball will not be easy, but Bobby will do fine!” The kids of Kinnelon have the right kind of role model to look up to as Lewit starts school and shows Muhlenberg what he’s made of.

Food Drive... continued from front page spring and summer. Now with the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, helping with hunger is as simple as collecting the mail--something people do every day. Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is completely voluntary, that is, not every town participates. According to Roy Jancio, National Association of Letter Carriers Representative 38, he is eager to get the word out about this worthwhile event. Jancio discloses that Pompton Lakes (and its surrounding towns of Butler, Riverdale and Pompton Plains) has been eagerly participating easily since the food drive began, proving that letter carriers do much more than deliver mail. They are part of people’s lives, a connection to others. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a prime example. On May 11th, letter carriers will be collecting non-perishable food. To participate, it’s as easy as filling up a bag and just leave out your donation by the mailbox. It is asked that donors set out bags of food well before your letter carrier’s normal pick up time. The rule of thumb is to have your donation out by your mailbox by 9:00 a.m. Top requests for non-perishable food include: cereal, pasta, pasta or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned protein, (tuna, chicken, turkey), beans (canned or dry). In addition, donors can also donate healthy, low- sodi-

um, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal, other whole grains, and olive or canola oil. People will even donate baby food. It is asked that people not donate frozen foods, homemade food, or home-canned items. Please do not donate items that are in glass containers or expired. In keeping with food safety procedures and practices, food that is opened, damaged or out of code, will be discarded by the food bank in its sorting practice. There’s no need to worry about using a special kind of bag to place food in, any will do. Paper bags tend to hold more food, while plastic tends to guard against wet weather. Pompton Lakes combines the best of both as they will accept brown paper bags with plastic bags under them, so they are easier to carry. No matter the weather, as the post office motto dictates, donations will be picked up. “Everyone here is so excited,” Pompton Lakes Letter Carrier Louis Massetti asserts. “The way it works is that about a week before the drive, we will send a card out through the mail and then people will set out their donations.” All food goes to the letter carriers’ respective local communities. In Pompton Lakes, donations will go to various locations, including soup kitchens, food banks and St. Mary’s Church. “Anywhere there’s a need for food,” Massetti asserts. Additionally, Jencio brings up a valid point, residents can still donate food in person, taking it to the food bank or pantry or their respective post

offices in person. “In these areas, people don’t always want to leave food out because of animals like raccoons getting to it, or if they won’t be home on May 11th, they can still donate food. “Here in Pompton Lakes people are so generous,” Massetti prides. “They will even wait for the truck and bring their bags to it. Meet the New Bloomingdale Free Public Library’s Children’s Event Coordinator

By Steve Sears onica Galiano, Children’s Event Coordinator for the Bloomingdale Free Public Library since October 2018, is hosting story time, leading a group of 11 toddlers in activity.

First there is the singing of “Hello children, I’m glad you came today…” with each child’s name eventually finding a home in the initial line, a march to music around the tiny Juvenile Area, a sing-along, and finally a coloring and pasting arts and crafts session. “She’s really good,” says Katarzyna Wizner, mom to daughter Julia and son Maximus, who attend often. “I like how the program works here. The crafts are really good.” “This job happily fell into my lap,” says Galiano, who speaks both English and Spanish. “That ability to speak Spanish – a lot of the children come here after school

for homework help, and their parents don’t speak a lot of English, so with me being able to explain to the parents how to help their children do their homework, it helps them go home and understand what their children have to do, and the parents will look at me and grasp what their children needed to get done that they weren’t getting done before.” Galiano, lovingly known to the children as “Miss Monica”, brings her own children to the Bloomingdale Public Library, and she says they love the books. “They love to read, that love to read to each other.” Also, there’s that special something the Borough and tiny library deliver. “It’s the hometown feeling you get here.” Then there’s the throwback to Galiano’s own childhood. Her mom was a Teacher’s Aide, and she often visited the library with her when younger. “This job opened up my mom in me,” Galiano says with a smile, reflecting. “I see my mom shine through.

She loved kids, she loved the reading aspect. I remember going to story times with my mom, her sitting down on the floor with me, reading a book.” Galiano’s tasks include conducting story times, which can entail all that was mentioned earlier, in addition to pajama parties, watching movies, inviting special continued on page 9

Perugino applauds what Galiano has brought to the library. “Monica is an incredible asset to the library staff! Her positive attitude and customer service skills make her a real team player,” says Perugino. “She is creative, enthusiastic and self-motivated as she plans, designs, and implements age-appropriate events for children. 1-year-old Julianna says, “The kids get to socialize with each other, they have lots of activities, they play with bubbles, they get music, they do a craft, they read a story, so it’s just a variety if things.” And as for Miss Monica? “They love her.” Galiano hopes to educate children more about and raise awareness about different diseases. “I love the fact that they do that now in the schools,” she says, eager to aid, pointing out the books that have green dots on them, books that teach about Autism awareness, educate regarding children in wheelchairs, and more. Preventative Care Important for Pets

ccording to a 2011 Bayer Veterinary Care Usage study, companion animal veterinary visits have been declining over the past several years. Study participants reported their pets saw the vet nearly 20 percent less than they did a mere four years ago. The infrequency of vet visits might be traced to a host of factors, including financial concerns stemming from the recent recession, the high cost of veterinary care, increased use of the Internet as a source of information about animal health and modifications in pet immunization schedules.

Many vets have moved to a three-year vaccination schedule, wherein pets only have to receive routine shots every three years instead of annually. Some pet owners are choosing to forego annual checkups because they don’t see the need to visit the vet unless a pet is sick or due for shots. Financial concerns are another factor in the decrease of vet appointments. Though the economy has begun to recover, some pet owners simply do not have the extra income to devote to animal care. While owners may have viable reasons for not taking their animals to see the vet, failure

to do so can prove costly down the road. Health checkups for pets can alert owners to potential problems that can be

resolved with medication or other therapy. Left unchecked, illnesses may spread until surgery or other invasive treatment options are the only recourse. Veterinary health insurance for pets is available at a reasonable cost. These insurance plans can offset the expense of some visits and provide protection if a major illness should befall a dog or cat. Many veterinarians recognize the high cost of pet care and will be willing to work with customers in regard to payments. It is worth talking to the vet to see if a payment plan or continued on page 11

Kinnelon Library Hosts Award Winning Writer Ron Hutchinson

By Elise Phillips Marguils on Hutchinson is an illustrious writer and producer whose works have appeared on television, in movies and on stage. He visited the Kinnelon Library on March 28 to discuss how combining common observations of life and events in his surroundings with imagination enable him to create his novels. People who went to hear him speak in the interactive event were encouraged to bring their memories of Kinnelon, stories and old photos to inspire them to spin tales. Hutchinson spoke of how Kinnelon is full of characters and stories—as all places are. He explained that everyday life provides all the inspiration one needs to write any genre of literature: a romantic comedy, a ghost story, a gangster movie, a

period drama or a horror flick. The secret is to think in narrative terms. Being conscious of how whatever we see or experience can be utilized in a story helps writers to conceptualize plot ideas. Hutchinson was born in Northern Ireland in 1947 and raised in England. His early plays were greatly influenced by his life in Ireland where he witnessed political conflict and violence. He was an author and playwright for years before adding screenwriting to his resume. In England he began writing television and film scripts as well as plays. Hutchinson also served as the resident writer for the Royal Shakespeare Company while in England. He moved to Los Angeles after he had begun writing for television and movies. He also lived in Fayson Lakes in

Kinnelon for a couple of years after decades of residing in Hollywood. Throughout his Hollywood career Hutchinson continued to write plays because they allowed him to explore the ideas he was passionate about and to retain control over his writing. Screenplays involve many other participants and the finished product often strays from the original content. Hutchinson has written dozens of critically acclaimed and award-winning plays, television shows and movies. Some of his most well-known movies are The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Tuskegee Airmen, The Burning Season, Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story and Fatherland. Marco Polo and Traffic: The Miniseries are a couple of examples of his famous television shows.

Kim Christian, Kinnelon Library’s Program Coordinator, said that Hutchinson had spoken at the library another time as well. “We love when he visits the library! He’s very funny and engaging. He has an Irish brogue accent. It’s so interesting to hear Ron talk about how a writer’s mind works. He notices people and situations and ideas bounce around in his head as he tries to imagine the story behind them. His lectures are so inspiring that everyone lingers in the parking lot discussing what he said.” Those who attended Hutchinson’s event were left with the beginning ideas and works for stories and movies. He also stayed and answered questions for the public, many wanting to know about his experiences in Hollywood.

Kinnelon Education Association Hosts 9th Annual 5K

For those who seek one, it takes hard work. Now the Kinnelon Education Association is sponsoring their 9th Annual 5K Scholarship event entitled Pot of Gold to be held on April 28th. There’s something freeing about running, and spring is the perfect time to enjoy it. Getting the body moving, seeing the blooming spring weather, feeling the mind wander, there’s so much to like about running. When there’s a giving back element, an ordinary 5K can catapult itself into something extremely rewarding. Everyone can enjoy this community

event getting together to walk or run and participate in this great cause. The time will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Located at 121 Kinnelon Road in Kinnelon, the 5K is being held in support of Kinnelon education. Registration ends on April 26th. Proceeds collected will benefit Kinnelon Education Scholarships for Kinnelon High School’s graduating seniors. Entry fees will be $25.00. For Kinnelon students and staff, the entry fee is only $15.00. The route will begin on the Kinnelon High School grounds, will go through the borough roads, and end on the Kinnelon High School track. Additionally, there will be a Mile Fun Run beforehand at 8:15. The proceeds raised from this event additionally will go to a chosen charity, which has yet to be decided. The Kinnelon Education As-

According to Chairman Alana Van Der Sluys, in the past an impressive 200 to 300 people have attended the Pot of Gold 5K. “Scholarship proceeds go to a senior that applies for the scholarship,” Van Der Sluys explains. “Ideally, this student has excelled academically but also has contributed meaningfully to the Kinnelon Community.”

Van Der Sluys, who has been with the Kinnelon Education Association with two years is excited regarding this 5K run and Scholarship event, hoping that is as successful as possible. “My hope is to give a scholarship as big as we can to a deserving senior, raise as much as possible for the charity that is chosen for the Fun Run, and to put on a fun event where all different types of people in the community can come together and have a great time,” she states. Van Der Sluys relates that feedback for this event has been very positive and people of all ages have joined in for this worthwhile cause. “We have categories of winners from 14 to 80 which is really wonderful to see. Jeff Zaun Announced as Sports Factory Club’s Technical Director

Using his knowledge of professional academy systems, Zaun will be tasked with improving the club’s current curriculum to offer the best methods in developing our youth players as well as educating the staff and guiding them in their professional development. Zaun comes to TSF Academy as a former professional player for both the Metro Stars alongside Tim Howard, Tab Ramos, Tony Meola and Alexi Lalas, before a brief stay with Chicago Fire under Bob Bradley. Following his retirement from professional soccer, Zaun went on to become the Rutgers University Assistant Head Soccer Coach, while taking on a role as a scout with the United States Soccer Federation. Zaun’s scouting responsibilities extended beyond players, as he was tasked with also sourcing the best coaches and referees in the region. Zaun then took on a role with the New York Red Bull Soccer Academy exhibiting his skills in both coaching and recruiting. While working with the club, Zaun’s U19 team finished 15-0 and ranked first in the country, seeing their top player, Ben Mines eventually sign with the first team. Zaun has seen a total of twelve of his Red Bull recruits make the first team, including US National

team players Matt Miazga, Tim Weah and Tyler Adams, a testament to a career of hard work and dedication on and off the field. In January 2018, Zaun was appointed Director of Youth Scouting for the Red Bull Soccer Academy, building an extensive player evaluation system for the Northeast region while coordinating all scouting efforts in the area. When asked, Zaun described the opportunity with TSF Academy as, “a perfect fit. The club’s commitment to developing players; its coaches; and the facilities and programs it offers are at the forefront of the youth soccer community in New Jersey. I look forward to being a part of that commitment to excellence and sharing my experience with the clubs coaches, families and players. Volunteers Help to Beautify Laurelwood Arboretum

pril is National Volunteer Month, and the volunteer season will begin at Laurelwood Arboretum on Tues. April 9 at 9 a.m. at the arboretum’s pavilion. Anyone who is interested in volunteering is welcome. Laurelwood Arboretum is located at 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne. On kickoff day, the volunteers will work until 11:30 a.m. and then enjoy refreshments and a welcome event starting at noon. Mary Jo Sichak will present, “What’s in Bloom,” a slide show of all the flowering plants, trees and shrubs in the arboretum that she recorded and labeled last year. Sichak is a Master Gardener, a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, and an accomplished gardener and photographer. “The arboretum would not be beautiful and healthy without the hours of work

put in by our volunteers,” said Elaine Fogerty, Executive Director of Laurelwood Arboretum “Our volunteers prune, thin and propagate; divide and replant perennials; plant bulbs; mulch the gardens; and eliminate invasive weeds. There is always work to do, something new to learn and someone new to meet.” Volunteers are welcome to work in the park any Tues. or Fri. from April 10 through October. Individuals can drop in anytime and do not need to sign up in advance. They should bring water, small hand tools and gardening gloves if they have them. Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience. Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event. Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering. “I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab. S c h wa b a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015. Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.” Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015. In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors. Schwab enjoys climbing at Randolph Climbing Center and thought it would be the perfect place to fundraise for Epic

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Sat. May 4. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam.
