Beloved Pequannock Fire Chief Passes but Not Forgotten

Ver Hage passed away at 88 on Feb. 7 and because he was such a committed member of the volunteer force, he was given the black and purple bunting that is usually reserved for firefighters that give the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

His last ride on the Engine Co. 2 fire truck was from the wake at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains to the First Reformed Church Cemetery.

According to those who knew Ver Hage

best, he gave everything to Engine Co. 2 and to the community he dearly loved.

Community involvement and civic duty was his true passion.

Jim Bonelli, a fireman at Engine Co. 2, became friendly with Ver Hage at the tender age of eight, when he and his friends would ride their bikes around the firehouse in 1968.

He recalled that Ver Hage loved to foster a love for firefighting in the local kids.

“He would give us little tasks to do, like sweeping up or washing the fire truck. He took us to parades and events. He always kept us involved,” Bonelli said.

“He even bought us uniforms at 13,” Bonelli added. At 32, Bonelli became a professional firefighter and credited Ver Hage as an inspiration.

Ver Hage was an industrious man. After getting out of the army in 1955, he owned a small trucking company and then got a job as a pyrotechnic engineer with Braen Stone Industries and worked in the quarry that is now Woodland Lake in Pompton Plains.

“There are two words to describe him, honesty and integrity,” Bonelli said, “He never said a bad word about anyone. I saw him get mad once and it was because someone stole something off the fire

truck.”

He added,“I lost my dad at 16. He was like a second father.”

Ver Hage was Chief of Engine Co. 2 from 1965 to 1985, but he remained active in the community and with the fire department, even after retiring from Braen Stone Industries.

He never had children of his own, but was survived by his long-time companion Phyllis Hughes and her four children. He was once married, but his former wife had already passed.

His step-son, Rick Hughes, said that he and his siblings, Gary, Cindy and Jerry considered him their step-father, even though he and their mother never married.

“He was very much involved in the community and always helped people,” and at the firehouse, “he went out of his way to pick up firefighters and get them to training,” said Hughes.

He recalled that Ver Hage also helped start Pequannock’s fire prevention bureau in the 1980s, and mentored its inspectors.

He said his step-father grew up in Prospect Park and during high school worked at his uncle’s greenhouse as a florist in Wayne. “He always had a plethora of knowledge on plants and flowers.”

After retirement, Ver Hage started a chocolate making hobby that kept him involved with the community. He had molds for every occasion and delivered them to children, a diner he frequented, the post office and friends and neighbors along the way. “Any way he could get a smile,” Hughes said.

“He gave them to my daughters every holiday,” Bonelli said.

A mechanically inclined man, Ver Hage treasured a ‘76 Chevy pick-up and a ‘63 Chevy Impala that he loved working on.

Hughes also remembered a blue station wagon, with emergency lights on the roof that became famous in the community.

Ver Hage later sold it to another fireman, when he retired as chief.

Garden State Yacht Club to Host Boating Safety Course & Open House

he Garden State Yacht Club on Lake Hopatcong will offer a US Coast Guard-sanctioned boating safety course on Saturday, May 4. Given in one day, students are eligible to receive the NJ Boating Safety Certificate at the completion of the course and passing the exam. All boaters are required

by New Jersey law to have this certificate. The cost of $75 covers materials, the exam, and lunch.

“He was extremely nurturing to all the young firemen,” and encouraged them to bring their kids and “to keep the house going,” Reeves said.

When Reeves became fire chief at Engine Co. 2, he said, Ver Hage always made time when he needed guidance.

“He would nurture you and help you come up with the right answer,” Reeves noted.

Like many mourning Ver Hage’s passing, Reeve’s said “It’s tough to think of just one

story.” Yet he recalled one that had been passed down through the decades, a legendary prank Ver Hage pulled to get his fireman in the ‘60s to think outside the box. Ver Hage put smoke generators in the fire house, disabled the automatic garage doors and walked down the road to wait for events to unfold.

At the critique afterwards, Reeves said, Ver Hage told them how well they performed and how proud he was of them.

“He was always a positive influence. He would never knock you down. He would always build you up,” Reeves said.

As most of the assignments in that class, it is a student-driven assignment that revolves around tangible outcomes. It helps bring out and encourage their passions which makes for a better learning environment.”

Students are graded on a weekly basis based on their performance in the class.

“It is a self-assessment that we then review and adjust based on the amount of work and effort that they put into their week,” Honig says. “I do my best to try and mimic what a real-world scenario would be like in the business world.”

The process began in early to mid-December. The students suggested various ideas, looked online for examples of what they liked and didn’t like, all the while keeping their target audience in mind. “Once we plotted out the general ideas,” says Honig, “we were able to put

it to action. It was important to us that it was natural and wasn’t overly scripted.

What you see is actually what you get.”

Honig makes it clear that Marketing II is not a video production class. “We utilize equipment that I personally have or, in the case of last year’s lip dub, (equipment) the students own. The end goal of the assignment is never to become a cinematographer, but to develop the marketer’s mindset on what goes into creating promotional material. The great part about it is that they learn both along the way.”

Honig’s Marketing II class is also working on a project that is meant to help bring awareness to teenage problems, and they’ve reached beyond school walls for further education. “We have met with marketing executives from Atlantic Health who are helping us create content to bring awareness to topics such as stress and anxiety, body image, sports injuries, and a few more. In a few weeks,

we are looking to launch a student-driven campaign for the site www.growstrongertogether.com.”

One thing is certain for Honig and his Marketing II students. “I am constantly working to bring experience to the students as part of this class. When I designed and implemented this course, I had a vision that it was going to be a course that student could bring something tangible to the table. They would be able to walk into a college or job interview and not just talk about something but show that they created something amazing. Our last year’s lip dub reached over 100k views. I have had over eight students create content on nationally recognized outlets. In the end, it helps them stand out and helps demonstrate the creativity and out of the box thinking that they are capable of.”

Homeowner Alert! Review Your Tax Forms New tax rules are creating confusion

B

ecause of new laws many home related tax rules have changed and now require you to prove how funds are used to qualify for a deduction. This is catching many taxpayers by surprise.

So when your mortgage company reports tax-related information to you and the IRS using Form 1098, it no longer means all the interest and points reported on these statements are tax-deductible.

Mortgage interest deductions have new loan amount limits. For new mortgages starting on or after Dec. 15, 2017, you can deduct interest on up to $750,000 of the loan (down from $1 million for mortgages initiated before Dec. 15, 2017). If your original

mortgage is above the threshold, a calculation will be done to determine the deductible amount of interest. You can’t simply deduct the full amount of interest being reported on your Form 1098.

Proceeds not used to buy a home add complexity. Proceeds from home equity debt that are not used to build, buy or substantially improve a qualified home are no longer tax-deductible. This includes mortgage or home equity proceeds used to pay for college expenses, debit consolidation or other purposes. Mortgage companies issuing these loans will still send you a Form 1098, but it’s up to you to prove how you use the funds during the current year and any prior

Mortgage points requires review of settlement statements. Points are paid as a way to obtain a lower interest rate. If you pay mortgage insurance, don’t wait to file your taxes thinking Congress will change their minds. File your taxes on a timely basis and expect to feel the impact of this eliminated deduction.

Coping with the Loss of a Pet

T

he strong bonds many people share with their pets can make the death of those pets, be it sudden or expected, difficult to handle. It’s not uncommon to be traumatized when a pet dies, and such grief may be influenced by the pet’s age at the time of its death, the circumstances surrounding that death and the nature of the relationship between the owner and pet.

Different pet owners deal with the death of a pet in different ways, but the following are some ways to cope with the loss of a companion animal.

Recognize that everyone pressed in many different ways. feels differently. Grief is ex- What one person experiences

variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your pet, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong the animal’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same opportunity.

Create mementos or a legacy for the pet. Creating mementos may help children who are having their own difficulty dealing with pet loss. Work with your child to create a photo album or plant a tree to honor your pet.

Dealing with a pet that must be euthanized can be especially difficult. Pet owners can choose to be in the room during the procedure, and that decision should not be made lightly. If you think you can handle it and you want to be there to comfort your pet, then you might be more comfortable being in the room.

But being present when a pet is euthanized can be emotional, so give this decision serious consideration.

Once a pet has died, many

owners debate whether or not to bring a new pet into their homes. Another animal around the house can fill the void created when your previous pet passed away, and some people adopt or buy a new pet before an old or sick pet passes away to make the transition as smooth as possible. A new pet should only be brought into the home when you’re ready to build a new relationship.

The Origins of the Leprechaun Myth

Each of these things are symbols of St. Patrick’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of Ireland every year on March 17.

While each of the aforementioned symbols is tangible, one popular image has proven a little more elusive. Leprechaun imagery is ubiquitous during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, but even the most ardent Paddy’s Day revelers may know little about these mythical creatures.

Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

Some historians believe the myth of the leprechaun has ori-

gins in ancient Ireland, when people believed the tiny creatures were among the various inhabitants of fairy forts and fairy rings throughout the Emerald Isle.

Another take on the source of the leprechaun myth is that these tiny creatures were modern incarnations of the Euro-Celtic god Lugh, who was the sun god as well as the patron of arts and crafts.

Manuscripts from the 12th to 15th centuries suggest leprechauns lived underwater and were not all male (modern leprechaun depictions are all male). In fact, the resource Ancient-Origins. net states that female leprechauns were depicted during this time as figures devoted to luring human men away for various adventures.

While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red.

The images of leprechauns can be seen everywhere on and around St. Patrick’s Day, and those images have evolved considerably over the centuries.

Classic Veal Parmesan Sandwiches Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 6 6 veal cutlets (3 ounces each) salt, to taste ground black pepper, to taste 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 egg wash 1 cup breadcrumbs 1 cup vegetable oil 12 tablespoons tomato sauce 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated 6 slices provolone cheese 6 slices mozzarella cheese 6 sub rolls Heat oven to 350 F. Pound each veal cutlet between sheets of parchment or plastic wrap until 1/4-inch thick.

Blot veal dry. Season each cutlet with salt and pepper, to taste. Dredge veal in flour;

Drain on paper towels or wire rack set over baking sheet.

Add 2 tablespoons tomato sauce to each veal cutlet and sprinkle 1/2 tablespoon Par-mesan cheese on top. Add one slice provolone and mozzarella cheese to each cutlet.

Place veal parmesan in oven 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese begins to melt and veal is hot.

Add veal to sub rolls and serve.

They will be sponsoring their Scholarship Program/Fashion Show and Luncheon to be held on April 6th, at 12:00 p.m. This worthwhile event will be held at Panther Valley Country Club in Allamuchy located at 1 Forest Drive.

Known for their generosity to local charities and scholarship awards for women, The Friends and Neighbors of Allamuchy has been going strong for many years and is celebrating their 40th Anniversary. With approximately 85 members, their focus is empowering and inspiring women any way they can.

Tickets will be $42.00 per person, and it is asked that they be purchased in advance as no tickets will be sold at the door. Tables of 10 may be arranged for $40.00 per person also.

All proceeds will benefit their scholarship program, giving scholarships to women 25 years old and up who wish to continue their education and who just need a little help.

Scholarship Program Fashion Show... continued from page 17 Warm and excited over the organization and the cause itself, according to organizer, Amy Petrie, they decided to do a fashion show and luncheon for their scholarship fundraiser because, “It is something different than the sort of events we usually do, plus it should be fun.”

Petrie tells that during the Scholarship Program/Fashion Show/ Luncheon event they will be giving away three scholarships at $1,000 each for the fall 2019 school year.

The only qualifications are that applicants must be 25 years old or older, United States citizens, a New Jersey resident, and in financial need.

The fashion show will feature fashions from Dun-

kelberger’s For Women of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

Known for their classic and beautiful fashions and accessories, they will be available for sale.

There will be a luncheon, and attendees will have a choice of chicken francaise with mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, and Madeira sauce or mahi mahi filet with pineapple and mango sauce. Additionally, the day will feature tricky tray baskets and craft items available for purchase.

Involved with the Friends and Neighbors of Allamuchy for approximately three years, the scholarship program is something Petrie can’t say enough about and she makes a good point, the organization addresses a neglected part of

the population. “There are so many scholarships out there for high schoolers people who are just starting out,” Petrie asserts. “But there are lots of other women out there.

Women who want to go back to college, schooling, or start a new career, there’s nothing out there for them. Our scholarships are for women who are just a little bit older, and who have the desire to further their education.”

Seeking to get the word out regarding this worthwhile cause, she mentions that applicants can be interested in any kind of education at all,

not just necessarily college.

She discloses that during last year one scholarship winner was interested in going to Cosmetology School while another was interested in becoming a physical therapist.

“This is our big fundraiser for the year,” Petrie explains.

“This is a wonderful way to empower women who want to make a positive change in their lives.”
