“The health department had donated tower gardens to schools, so this week I’m going to call them to ask about abundance of herbs and vegetables,” Castaneda said. “It helps the kids, also, as they love to get involved.”

The pantry is supported in part by Wakefern Food Corporation, which gives grants to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. The funds are then used by local food pantries to purchase supplies. The rest of the donations are contributions from the community, both individuals and organizations.

In addition to its dedication to healthier eating, the Lincoln Park Food Pantry is one of the few pantries that give out fresh

meat. Robbin’s Ice Company in Lincoln Park stores the meat in its freezers, which contributes to the idea of the pantry’s being a community effort.

“The churches help out, as well as the dozen pantry volunteers who package and distribute the food – they really go above and beyond,” Castaneda said. “It’s a group effort.”

Abundant Life Worship Center is one of the religious organizations that is helping the pantry with toys, clothes and gift cards this Christmas for children in need. Local Boy and Girl Scout troops are also assisting with food and gift distribution for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

According to Castaneda, the pantry currently has an abundance of turkeys for both holidays, which are being stored

pantry still needs to service families for Thanksgiving include gravy, chicken stock, boxes of cookies and stuffing.

Additionally, regular donations of canned goods, cereals, cookies, packaged foods, dish detergent, aluminum foil, food baggies, laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, tissues, paper towels, toilet paper and feminine hygiene products are always welcome, as are monetary contributions.

Eligibility for assistance is based on income and family size, although Castaneda points out that the pantry provides temporary help to anyone who needs it. The pantry refers to the families it services as “clients;” Castaneda explained that former clients are often eager to help out after they achieve financial stability. Tips On Caring For Disabled Dogs

og disabilities could be a result of illness, physical injury or accidents.

Just because your dog is disabled, it should not stop you from enjoying its company. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to help the dog live a normal life and cope with the situation. Below are a few tips to keep your dog happy and healthy, even with its disability.

Assist their movements.

Dogs who suffer from mobility problems, such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, spinal disorders, DM in dogs (degenerative myelopathy) or other medical problems that affects their hind legs will need plenty of help moving around. To make things easier for you

and the dog, you can buy a special leash that supports its torso and back legs. There are also other tools that assist in mobility problems, such as dog wheelchairs that can be strapped to its back. If you are

going to take the dog out to the vet, you will need to carry it into the car since it might have a hard time getting in.

You can also use a small and improvised ramp that will help it walk into the car.

Watch their weight. Like humans, overweight dogs have a higher chance of getting sick compared to dogs that stay within their ideal weight. Exercise and a balanced diet are the only things you really need to worry about when it comes to your dog’s weight. Make sure it gets the right amount of exercise by taking it out for walks or jogs. You can also let it run around in an open area like your backyard, front lawn or park. Never overfeed or underfeed your dog. Use a good dog food mix or you can feed them meat that you prepared. Borough Introduces ‘Recycle Coach’ To Simplify Recyclables Collection

By Julie Ross here are executive coaches, exercise coaches, and life coaches. But in Lincoln Park, there is another type of coach.

The borough has partnered with Recycle Coach, a program promoted as helping communities to “work together to waste less and recycle more” using “digital tools and print solutions” that “lower recycling barriers” by making it easier for residents to remember recyclable collection schedules and clarifying which items may be recycled and when.

Under terms of the partnership, Lincoln Park residents will have access to Recycle Coach in software or app form, free of charge.

“We’ve introduced Recycle Coach so residents don’t have to worry about garbage and recycling—simple as that,” said a supervisor at the Lincoln Park Department of Public Works.

Recycle Coach provides each resident with personalized collection and event calendars that indicate on which dates various recyclable materials and items will be collected. The calendar function can be

synched with any calendar on any device of users’ choosing. Users can also set custom collection reminders so that they do not forget to place the proper bins outside for pickup. Reminders are available by “push” notification, through SMS (text) voice or via email. Users need only indicate by which method they want to receive the reminders, and how far in advance they should be delivered.

Additionally, Recycle Coach offers a “What goes where?” tool. The tool is designed to provide disposal information for more than 10,000 household items. Residents can find out whether these items are accepted for recycling in Lincoln Park and into which recycling bin they should be placed. If an item is not accepted for any regular collection in the borough, the tool indicates where it may be dropped off for disposal.

Recycle Coach also assists residents with collection requirements so that their trash is not rejected at pickup time. Collection requirements are specified for all items included in the “What goes where?” tool, including set-out times, weight or volume restrictions, and any other rules that

apply to trash and recyclables disposal in the borough.

Finally, the software and app eliminate concern about whether collection day will be cancelled because of a storm or other occurrences, as well as about missing special collection events. Users will receive real-time notifications and up-to-date information about trash and recycling collection postponements and cancellations.

Recycle Coach also automatically issues alerts about upcoming community waste and recycling events centered on items that are not picked up during regular recycling runs, such as unwanted or broken electronics, appliances, paint, and bulk files.

Recycle Coach is available on multiple platforms and devices, including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Apple mobile device users can download the app from the App Store, and Android mobile device users can do the same via Google Play.

It was when Kathy Groener Sturla’s youngest son, Jim, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, was badly wounded in Iraq, that she first became aware of the needs of both members of the military and their families. Sturla, a lifelong resident of Pequannock Township and a 1969 graduate of PTHS, experienced, along with her family, life-changing episodes as son Jim began the long road to recovery.

During that time, they were given a donation towards expenses by the Marines’ Semper Fi Fund; it was a gift to be used for their immediate needs.

She and her daughter-in-law were so inspired by the Semper Fi Fund that, once home, they began discussing ways in which they, too, could raise money for military families in need.

Thus, the “Family and Friends for Freedom Fund” was formed. With the first event, a beefsteak dinner, being held in 2005, the fund has continued to raise money for the last 13 years in multiple ways. As a result, they have been able to distribute over $1.5 million to wounded military and their families. She fields heart-wrenching phone calls, makes hospital visits and arranges for flights, hotel stays and dinners — in short, she does everything she can to help wounded heroes.

The Pequannock Township Hall of Fame induction ceremony is held every two years. The next dinner will be held in 2020 and the nominating committee would welcome hearing about the achievements of other outstanding alumni.

As evidence of the wide-ranging career choices of PTHS graduates, Gayle Neufeld spoke about her passion for Alaska and her nearly 20 years conducting field studies in remote locations. A 1981 high school graduate, Neufeld earned both a B.S. and an M.A. in biology and went on to work as a research assistant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

There, she was part of marine ecological research projects, some of which were part of the Census of Marine Life, a

decade-long research initiative consisting of 540 expeditions conducted by scientists from 80 countries. Currently working as a research analyst with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, she most recently developed a methodology to combine western science with traditional ecology of Native peoples to study the ecology of large migratory animal populations.

Some students are outstanding in high school and continue to be so in their careers. Such a student was Timothy Burklow, a standout in high school and president of the class of 1987, as well as captain of football and wrestling. Burklow has achieved noteworthy success in the field of business and is owner and managing director of Mindful Wealth Management. He has been recognized

he public can experience a historic farm-style Thanksgiving holiday and mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township on Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon to 4 p.m.

Guests will roll up their sleeves and help prepare dinner at the farmer’s house.

They’ll pitch in at the cider press, and saw the wood needed for winter heating and cooking. They’ll also meet the friendly farm animals, take a leisurely wagon ride and enjoy live, patriotic music.

At the Willows Historic

House, guests will experience the house come alive to 1918, set with actors using vignettes to portray characters on the home front during World War I. Join in laying out knit poppies to honor Morristown service men and women of the First World War. A 1 p.m., everyone will gather for a special program honoring all U.S. military personnel and veterans and to recognize the 100th anniversary of U.S. involvement in WWI. The ceremony will include a reenactor and a VFW color guard.

At the Visitors Center, there will be a ‘Call of Duty’ exhibit, and guests can create their
