George Klein: Volunteer, Musician & Comedian Celebrates 100th Birthday

By Elise Phillips Margulis oseland resident George Klein resided in Livingston most of his life and volunteered for many wonderful causes. He turned 100 on February 11th and celebrated with two big parties: one with fellow AARP members at Livingston’s Senior/Community Center and again dining and dancing with his family and friends at The Hanover Manor.

Klein, who is known for his “true stories,” humor and charisma, was born in Newark in 1920 and graduated from West Side High school. He served in the Navy during WWII. Klein met his future wife, Doris, while riding horses and was an equestrian for many years. He and Doris married after the war and settled in Livingston. He recalled, with a chuckle, that they bought a new house for $16,000.

Klein has three adult sons, each of whom visits him once a week. He also has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Professionally, Klein was a final inspector at Thomas Edison Bell Laboratory where he worked for 37 years. He retired in 1962. When he wasn’t working, he and his wife devoted a great deal of time volunteering for Saint Barnabas Hospital. His retirement has spanned decades, during

which he has volunteered a great deal of time to helping others.

Klein was one of the original founders of AARP (American Association for Retired Persons), whose website cites their mission as “to empower people to choose how they live as they age.”

Other volunteer positions that Klein has held throughout the years include Little League and basketball coach and Livingston Memorial Library volunteer.

Klein has been a member of Livingston’s Old Guard for three and a half decades. The group of “retired gentlemen” meets weekly to organize activities, educational/motivational speaking events, trips, parties, charitable work and more. The Old Guard has many sub-clubs including a Poetry Club, Financial Club, Bridge Club and more.

Klein loves to entertain people and is a singer in the Livingtones, a Glee Club formed by the AARP in 2011. The Livingtones visit assisted living facilities, nursing homes, veterans and other places to sing and spread joy.

They also perform at events like Livingston’s Intergenerational Prom.

n the seven presidential elections since 1992, the Republican presidential nominee has won the popular vote exactly once. The lone GOP candidate to receive a majority of the national vote was George W. Bush in 2004. Bush’s election-day victory over Democrat John Kerry, who had, in most observers’ views, “won” the debates between the two, was explained by the respected Democratic pollster Peter Hart: “Voters preferred I Like over IQ.” One test of deciding between presidential nominees is, “Who would you rather have a beer with?” which is another way of asking which White House challenger the voter personally likes more than the other. In short, our ballot for president is the most “personal” vote we Americans cast. Almost always, we pick the candidate with whom we are more comfortable and, more significantly, the candidate whose judgment and character we think we could depend upon in a personal crisis.

As evidence of the weight of the “I like” factor in presidential voting, let’s look at recent contests: In 2012, Barack Obama, the winner, was rated 52% personally favorable by voters, while Mitt Romney’s scores were 47% favorable and 50% unfavorable. In 2008, Americans had a rare positive choice. In the last Gallup poll before election day, John McCain was given a favorable rating by 57% of Americans and was barely eclipsed by Barack Obama’s 61% favorable score. In 2004, winner George W. Bush was 53% favorable among voters on election day, while John Kerry’s numbers were at 47%-51%. In 1992 and 1996, voters liked Democrat Bill Clinton more than they liked both then-President George H. W. Bush and Sen. Bob Dole. Of course, the outlier election was 2016, when both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump received historically low favorability scores. About

Mark Shields 1 in 5 voters rated both candidates unfavorably but, when forced to choose between the two, voted for Trump with 3-2 odds.

But what about the 2020 Outsider who’s on our living rooms TVs at every timeout of every game, at every commercial break between weather reports, news coverage and even during the Super Bowl? Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, an authentic billionaire, is spending at a rate unprecedented in American politics. And it is paying off.

In most recent national polls, Bloomberg -- on the strength of his wall-to-wall media campaign -- has risen to double digits and as high as third place in some surveys.

We know that Michael Bloomberg has supported and spent generously to back candidates and initiatives that reflect his own priorities of gun control and climate change. In the eyes of some Democrats, Bloomberg’s political history -- his quarter-million-dollar gift to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham; the more than $11 million the mayor donated in 2016 to Pennsylvania continued on page 6

Tyranny of the Tamiflunatics

eware of clickbait character assassins masquerading as “journalists.”

This is a lesson America should have learned after the mass media defamation of the Covington Catholic schoolboys last year. Just a few weeks ago, innocent teenager Nick Sandmann won a multimillion-dollar settlement against CNN for leaping to conclusions and attempting to ruin his life in pursuit of a political agenda driven by confirmation bias. The Washington Post and NBC News face similar lawsuits for potential damages totaling more than a half-billion dollars.

False allegations have consequences.

And yet, here we are again.

In Colorado last week, a young family was hurled into a national firestorm created by a single, powerful NBC News vigilante with an ideological ax to grind.

“Investigative reporter” Brandy Zadrozny lit the fuse on Feb. 6 with a Twitter post announcing that a 4-year-old had died of the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,000 Americans (including nearly 70 children) have died of the flu this season. So what made this Colorado toddler’s tragic death newsworthy?

The NBC News journalist condemned the boy’s mom for having reached out to a Facebook health-centered parents’ group whose members recommended that she not give her child Tamiflu medicine that a pediatrician had prescribed.

Some commenters on the group had advised home remedies, including essential oils and vitamin C. Zadrozny linked to her incendiary hit piece on the mom and the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” Facebook group, which was titled: “On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.”

The toxic inference is clear: “An-

Michelle Malkin ti-vaxxers” are guilty of spreading online “misinformation” that led the mom to withhold a purportedly life-saving modern medicine -- and Facebook is guilty for not stopping it.

Zadrozny is a self-anointed and self-appointed social media policewoman whose main focus is pressuring Facebook to shut down discussion groups she doesn’t like. She labels all vaccine skeptics as conspiracy theorists without refuting facts or responding to peer-reviewed journal citations and historical data. She uses her bully pulpit to harangue Facebook into censoring laypeople seeking alternatives to “mainstream” medicine.

Zadrozny quoted “experts” fretting about parents who discuss their objections to coercive mandates and missives of Big Pharma and Big Government. Her article sneered at “natural remedies.”

The magic words “anti-vaxx” triggered the Two Minutes Hate theater that sent “Tamiflu” trending on Twitter.

The nicer messages called for the boy’s grieving mom to be arrested and imprisoned. Many advocated that she continued on page 6

The Art and Beauty of Skating Still Brings the Excitement in Essex County at Codey Arena

By Megan Roche est Orange’s Codey Arena is home to two NHL sized rinks, but aside from public skating sessions, figure skating and hockey practices, this arena is filled with much more than meets the eye.

On March 1, Ice Dance International came to the West Orange area, showcasing award winning ice skaters and treated the public to one stellar performance.

Ice Dance International, which is based in Maine, rolled in on the morning of March 1. As preparations were underway for In Flight: Live, a mix of world-premiere pieces and previous works, blending emotional and stirring performances set to familiar classical music and contemporary artists including Thom Yorke, Ben Kweller, Max Richter and Artie Shaw, excitement was buzzing around the arena.

Ice Dance International, in its sixth year as a company, decided to tour after a ground-breaking 2019 performance that made it the first ice dance company invited to the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival site in Becket, Mass. They have also had two popular television specials in regular rotation on PBS stations nationwide bringing their artistry and athleticism to millions of viewers around the country.

User Hayden chimed in: “She clearly should be executed, as should the person who posted the nonsense on FB, as well as anyone who liked said nonsense, ALL EXECUTED!!”

Zadrozny’s inciting tweet now has nearly 40,000 retweets, 5,000 comments and 72,000 likes.

Lost in all of these crazed point-andsputter diatribes were some pertinent, pesky facts.

“Investigative reporter” Zadrozny never actually interviewed the parents, Geneva Montoya and Najee Jackson Sr., and relied solely on the Facebook postings and information from their GoFundMe page without independently discovering whether they

But we do not know who Mike Bloomberg really is. Does he have a temper or a sense of humor? Can he laugh at himself? Would we want him as a neighbor? Can he personally ask the machinist in Dayton and her husband for their votes? Or is he a billionaire who, like so many people with money, is most comfortable surrounded by high-priced, professional bootlickers

who tell him how much smarter, more successful and more qualified he is to be president than anyone else?

Through his sophisticated and expensive TV and internet campaigns, we are learning what Mike Bloomberg wants us to know about him. What voters have yet to find out -- and will not know until he’s in the arena, mixing it up with the other Democrats and on the debate stage -- is whether we will like Mike.

had changed course after Montoya had commented to the Facebook group. Nor did she independently verify whether the parents were “anti-vaxx” or what vaccines besides the controversial flu vaccine (whose effectiveness has been challenged worldwide by health officials) they had chosen to avoid. A local television station, however, did the reporting Zadrozny failed to do.

It turns out the entire family, except for 4-year-old Najee Jr., had been suffering from influenza B. A 10-month-old brother who had been running a high fever had been seen at my neighborhood Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs the afternoon before Najee Jr. fell ill. Montoya told Fox31 TV in Colorado Springs: “We called the doctors. We called the hospital. We gave them the medicine we were instructed to give.

We did everything.”

Those who have already prejudged the mom respond that she must be lying. What if she is telling the truth? And why hadn’t Zadrozny updated her story as of Feb. 11? I asked the online social media monitor that question publicly on Twitter, but she failed to respond by my deadline.

More to the point, it’s quackery to suggest that Tamiflu would have saved Najee Jr.’s life. The respected Cochrane researchers in Britain have concluded there is no

evidence the medicine reduces mortality or hospitalizations. In 2006, the FDA updated the Tamiflu label indicating that it could cause psychiatric problems. Japan banned Tamiflu for teenagers amid concerns about deleterious side effects.

Just days before Zadrozny crucified Najee Jr’s family, a Denver mom publicly warned that her 8-year-old daughter suffered hallucinations from Tamiflu. Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl in Leesburg, Va. with the flu died of cardiac arrest. She had been prescribed Tamiflu. Another 16-yearold in Ohio died of the flu last month after suffering a stroke. She, too, had been prescribed Tamiflu.

Grover Cleveland Birthplace Visitor’s Center Approved by Governor Murphy

By Elise Phillips Margulis rover Cleveland, the only United States president from New Jersey, was born in Caldwell in 1837. His father, minister of the First Presbyterian Church, lived in a manse on the church’s property.

The church sold the building to the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association (GCBMA), a group of people that wanted to preserve the house. The Grover Cleveland Birthplace, c. 1832, opened to the public in 1913 as a museum.

The Grover Cleveland’s Birthplace museum is run by The State of New Jersey working collaboratively with the GCBMA to ensure the building and grounds are well preserved.

The property is comprised of the birthplace house and a carriage house, which were listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1976. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Caryn Shinske, Press Officer of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) explains why a Visitor’s Center is needed. “The actual birthplace structure is challenging for bus tours because it lacks essential public amenities, especially acces-

sible rest rooms. The new Visitor’s Center will have these. Similarly, the birthplace structure is too small to allow large groups to visit at one time.”

The new Visitor’s Center will feature assembly space and a greeting foyer for the overflow of groups. Shinske notes, “Another important feature of the Visitor’s Center will be a readily accessible gift store. This gives visitors the opportunity to buy a memento of their trip to the site, while producing income to support the stewardship of this National Landmark historic site.”

An additional benefit of the new Visitor’s Center is that it will provide space for educational and community activities in its new small group conference room and large audio visual meeting.

Shinske reports, “State Historic site’s not-for-profit partner GCBMA has been working in close partnership with the New Jersey State Park Service and the DEP on the new Visitor’s Center project for the past 10 years, from brainstorming to fundraising (on both sides), then design and construction drawings, and now the final step of construction.”

Visitor’s Center. According to Connelly & Hickey’s proposal, “The Carriage House is currently being underutilized and can be adaptively reused to serve as a Visitor’s Center that will enhance the Grover Cleveland Birthplace site and provide much-needed additional amenities and space.”

Connelly & Hickey has worked with The GCBMA to develop a long-term plan for the

renovation of the carriage house.

The Association’s priority is to preserve the carriage house. An addition will be constructed to include everything the Association has deemed necessary for operations.

West Orange has a special place in Ice Dance International’s heart. With some of their Board of Directors based out of the West Orange area, Webster and his team have created many routines at Codey Arena, held practices, and much more. March 1 was Ice Dance International’s second stop in West Orange after visiting in 2016 on their national tour.

JoJo Starbuck, a two time Olympian, three-time United States pair skating champion and Ice Dance International Board Member, calls Codey Arena home. Starbuck teaches the sport she loves at the Essex Skating Club of New Jersey, also based out of Codey Arena.

“The only place you can see elite figure skating these days is during a competition, where there are judges, and scores, and technical elements that many people don’t always understand. Ice Dance International, they are not burdened with all the judging and all that scoring, there is music, a composer, a choreographer, that creates beautiful pieces. It’s like going to a ballet, but it’s on the ice. The top notch Olympic and world class skaters are there, but now they are just skating for the beauty and the exquisite sensibility of their art.” Starbuck said.

Starbuck had quite the career in skating.

When she started as a little girl, the Olympics were far from her mind. After taking a few recreation classes in skating, she was paired up at the age of seven with her partner for more than 40 years, Kenneth Shelley.

“When I was growing up in Southern California, I was a real tomboy but also really theatrical. I was always making up little plays in my garage that I would make my neighbors come and the other neighborhood kids would be in it. I was producing these little plays, but I also couldn’t stop climbing things and I couldn’t go fast enough. My mom discovered the Downey School of Ice Skating and she bought me some secondhand skates and I would go there after school.” Starbuck said.

Starbuck fell in love with skating quite fast. Skating gave her the ability to go fast and feel the wind in her face, but also at the same time, allowed her the ability to be theatrical. Skating started very innocently for Starbuck, finding the rink to become her second home over the years.

“I didn’t even know what the Olympics were at that age, you don’t start out saying ‘I’m going to be an Olympian’, you just take one day as it comes and then I would see these ice shows, and I just knew I really wanted to be in one of those shows. That

was my real motivation initially.” Starbuck said.

In 1968 and 1972, Starbuck and Shelley competed together in the Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France and Sapporo, Japan respectively. While the two never medaled at the games, they placed third at the World Championships in 1971 and 1972, placed second in the North American Championships in 1969, and first in the North American Championships in 1971. In addition, Starbuck and Shelley placed numerous times at the U.S. Championships, earning first in 1967 (as juniors), 1970, 1971, 1972, earning second in 1969, and third in 1968.

Starbuck can easily recall some of the best moments of her skating career.

“Making the Olympic team was probably one of the highlights of my entire skating career. When Ken and I turned pro was also one of the best moments, although we longed to make the Olympic team, we always wanted to become professionals, and to be part of that, you have the brightest people in Hollywood producing you and doing your costumes, and setting you, and doing the production numbers, it’s all built around you. Being asked to skate with John Curry at the MET and on Broadway is also a wonderful memory.” Starbuck shared.

After a majorly successful professional

career with Shelley, skating and touring with famed Olympic Champion and British Figure Skating star John Curry, Starbuck now teaches at Codey Arena and Rockefeller Center. Her love for skating still remains just as strong. She is grateful for all the life lessons that skating has taught her, and she hopes that her adult skating/fitness classes, JoJo’s Cool Workout, at Codey Arena and Rockefeller Center help others realize the benefits of skating.

“Coaching is a natural evolution, because people see your work and they admire your work and they want a piece of that.

One thing leads to another and it’s been an amazing journey. I love the little kids and the senior citizens; it’s been an incredible experience. Skating really does last a lifetime and it gives you so many life lessons.” Starbuck said.

Livingston Man Needs Kidney

By Melissa A. Kay acob Silver of Roseland, New Jersey will turn 30 on March 21. It’s a milestone, and for Silver, it means more to him than most. Having been diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder at just six months old, his life has been burdened with countless trips in and out of hospitals, several surgeries, multiple bacterial infections, and eventual kidney failure.

Silver lived in Loma Linda, California as an infant, but after moving across the country, he graduated from Livingston High School. He was accepted to seven colleges, six of which offered him scholarships, as his mother, Marlene S. Baker shared. Silver decided that Rutgers University would be where he’d go, and zeroed in on business, making it his major.

Baker explains of her only child, “Unfortunately due to being sick so often, he only was able to get through two years of college. Jacob is an extremely smart individual, originally wanting to be on Wall Street. Since then he changed his mind and wanted to teach quantum physics. He has a very dry sense of humor, loves soccer, video games, and the stock market. He is a good son and grandson, and my life.”

These days, Silver resides with his Aunt Mary in a shared apartment, and he’s very close to his maternal grandparents, Shirley and Murray Silver.

Since he was small, Silver’s health battles have been part of the picture. He’s in need of a new kidney, and the fact that his blood type is O negative makes it even harder for him to find a match, according to Baker. She says, “Every day is bad, it’s just the degree of bad that it is.” Seeing her

son in this condition must be so difficult for Baker to handle, but for the sake of her son, she stays strong.

Baker explains, “Jacob has been on peritoneal dialysis since October of 2017. This past December, it stopped working and he had to begin hemodialysis. Unfortunately, it has not been going well for him. He’s having an extremely hard time adjusting to the differences in diets and the amount of fluids allowed. He is also regularly suffering from cluster headaches which last caused him to have a seizure and be hospitalized for a week. He has been on the waiting list (for a kidney) here in New Jersey almost three years, and almost two years in Florida. I really believe - as I’m sure most parents of children waiting for kidneys do - that he most definitely needs (a transplant) sooner than later.” Silver goes for dialysis every three days, and the process takes up nearly the entire day. Understandably, he hasn’t felt well since the dialysis started.

A donor around age 30 with blood type O negative would be Silver’s best match. Baker shared how others can help, even if they can’t donate a kidney to Silver directly.

“They have what’s called an exchange program. Anyone who would like to donate a kidney would do so in Jacob’s name. If they passed all the tests and were qualified to donate a kidney, whatever blood type they are, it would go to the person at the top of the list waiting for that particular blood type. In exchange for that, Jacob would replace this person at the top of the list and the next available O negative kidney would go to him.”

With a new kidney, Baker says, “To the best of my knowledge and understanding, he will make a complete and total

Millburn Student Reaches Semifinalist Round in “Name the Rover” Essay Contest

By Steve Sears li Nadell, a 16-year-old Junior at Millburn High School, didn’t win the NASA “Name the Rover” contest, but he was a national semifinalist.

That’s pretty darn good, and the name he devised, “NOVUS”, is his and his alone.

“Of course, my created name won’t be the name that NASA selects for the Mars 2020 Rover,” says Nadell, “but it is still an incredible honor to have made it to the semifinalist stage. It’s definitely a conversation piece among my friends and family, and the fact that people are still recognizing me and congratulating me for my essay really show how special of an experience this has been. While I don’t have anything official planned, it’s always fun to talk to people about how the name came to be and what the challenge means to me.”

John Yi teaches a course called “Space Exploration” at the high school, where discussed was NASA’s upcoming Mars 2020 Rover, which is set to launch in July 2020. He was excited to have his students enter the Rover naming contest. “I was not at all surprised that Eli’s entry (“Novus”) was chosen as a semifinalist,” he says. “His proposed rover name is quite original, and his supporting essay effectively captures the rover’s significance in the context of why we explore space as well as the role of NASA.” In addition, when Nadell learned that Yi had started an Advanced Space Exploration club for students who have already taken his class and want to enter space-related challenges and competitions, he convinced his teacher to let him join. “That just goes to show how much of a space geek he is.”

“When I found out about Mr. Yi’s club,” says Nadell, “I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Completing space-based challenges with a group of like-minded people interested in space gave me an opportunity to feed my passion for the subject in a way that outside research and general interest could not.”

Nadell explains how he came up with the name which placed him with 154 other semifinalists. “The search for life on a planet where no human has ever set foot was, to say the least, new. And as an homage to NASA’s use of Latin throughout its history, I figured that “novus”, Latin for “new”, would suit the Mars rover well and represent what NASA is trying to accomplish with this mission.”

There’s a deep mutual respect between student and educator, and Nadell sings Yi’s praises as to the quality of his teaching skills. “This year with Mr. Yi has done so much for me in terms of my learning as a student and as a person.

His class delves into so many different facets of the space exploration community and he has really given me an outlet to take in an immense amount of knowledge about a topic that interests me so much. He always says that he could pick any topic in the course, be it a certain spacecraft or a certain movie about space and spend an entire course on it. This statement rings true for me, as it is clear that Mr. Yi loves what he teaches, and he does an excellent job conveying to the class how important of a field space exploration is. His passion and plethora of knowledge when it comes to space has inspired me to be an inquisitive learner and his lessons oftentimes lead me to do outside research on a particular subject.”

Graduation looms in 16 months for Nadell, and his love of space and its study he will carry with him to his life’s next steps. “My interest in space has always stuck with me throughout my life, and I don’t expect that to change after high school. I hope that with higher education, I can dive further into some of the more complex theories and aspects of the field, but only time will tell. Whether or not I put my space-related education to formal or professional use is unclear, but I do know for sure that the topics and perspectives I have learned in Mr. Yi’s class will follow me wherever I go.”

What does a 100-year-old man do in his spare time? He continues his volunteer work and enjoys his club activities. Klein visits the Roseland and Livingston libraries to watch movies and read magazines. His favorite publications are Time, local newspapers and the Star Ledger.

When asked about the secret of longevity, he revealed that his parents both lived to be octogenarians. He doesn’t eat much and says he’s “not a health food fanatic.”

Klein says he’s “busy almost everyday.” He keeps stimulated socially, mentally and emotionally—all of which are good for one’s wellbeing.

He noted, “People are living much longer now and are valuable assets to the community.” He feels that seniors are more appreciated now than 20 years ago. However, he wanted to know “what women [are] doing to men that they outnumber males so much at nursing homes.” That’s another key to feeling young, a good sense of humor.

One tip he offered for aging well was to “hug lovely widows to feel young at heart.”

Everyone absolutely adores George and his ‘true stories.’ His continued involvement in the community has demonstrated what a kind and giving human being he is and mostly an inspiration to all including myself.”

Branquinho admires Klein’s ability to encourage others. “He makes us want to be and do better...life is not just about serving our needs but how we can help others through their difficulties, even if it’s by telling a few jokes.”

Gan Ivrit Immersion School at Temple Beth Shalom to Open September 2020

emple Beth Shalom, Livingston, will begin its Gan Ivrit Immersion School in September 2020. This first-of-itskind program in the Greater MetroWest area will provide an all-Hebrew language and culture immersion school for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds.

An open house for prospective families to learn more about Gan Ivrit is scheduled for Thursday, March 12. The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Gan Ivrit will offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum taught solely in Hebrew, by teachers who are native Hebrew speakers from Israel. The program will be based in its own special wing at Temple Beth Shalom which is being transformed into a beautiful environment reminiscent of Israel.

In addition to providing extra space and amenities with an energy efficient plan, the Association and Connolly & Hickey are currently working on a conversion that will match the style of the Grover Cleveland Birthplace House and will complement

the architecture of the historic birthplace house. The Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation requires that additions to historic buildings maintain the esthetics of their original architecture.

igh school students considering majoring in environmental science, conservation or environmental education in college are invited to “Watershed University,” a new program offered this summer by Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), the region’s watershed watchdog.

The one-week certificate program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, 2121 Larger Cross Road, Bedminster.

The program is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who want to gain insights in the environmental field, learn how to make impactful change and serve their communities. Each day includes a speaker, hands-on scientific exploration, and team building.

“Participants will learn from experts, examining environmental and social topics that affect local and global natural resource challenges,” said Lauren Theis, education director for Raritan Headwaters. “On-theground conservation projects will allow students to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and building connections

within a group.”

Watershed University topics include: Watershed conservation Creating habitat for native wildlife Native plant identification Pond and stream study Climate issues Environmental justice GIS mapping Environmental policies Students will have the option to participate in additional experiences, such as organic gardening, visual art projects, kayaking, hiking and yoga. Students will also connect with RHA staff and partners to explore opportunities for advanced learning, community service, citizen science projects and internships.

The cost of the program is $200, which includes certificate of participation and a Raritan Headwaters hat and t-shirt. Needbased scholarships are available.

Four (Tempting) Behaviors to Avoid When Saving for Retirement and the Secret to Real Retirement Savings Success

Provided by David M Rose o err is human, but you can sidestep some of the most common mistakes people make in saving for retirement by avoiding these four oh-so-tempting behaviors.

Retirement savings mistake #1: procrastinating Even though you know you will get older and eventually retire, a little part of you still believes you might not. Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler, the founding father of behavioral economics, has spent much of his career exploring why so many Americans have difficulty saving for retirement. One thing he found is that people would rather enjoy what their money can do for them today rather than in the future. 1 Retirement savings mistake #2: being too loss averse We don’t like to lose money, so the notion of less money in our paycheck today to serve our needs in the future is a tough pill to swallow. The problem with loss aversion is that we keep delaying that uncomfortable feeling of a smaller paycheck. If you delay too much, you lose out on the compounding effect. For example, if you decide to save $5,000 a year beginning at the age of 35, by the time you’re 65—assuming a 4.5% rate of return—you’ll have 43% less savings than if you had started saving at age 25. That adds up to $240,000.1 Retirement savings mistake #3: not practicing discipline When deciding how to invest, too often investors try to time the market rather than follow a disciplined investment approach.

Trying to get in the market “at the right time” sounds smart, but in reality, it often leads to inaction, because that right moment never seems to come. The idea of timing the market only reinforces the first two mistakes (procrastination and being too loss averse).

Here’s an example of a disciplined savings

strategy: You could start by putting $5,000 away, and then add 5% each year. It might sound boring, but in the end, it will add up to much more than a “timed” strategy that never quite launches.

Retirement savings mistake #4: tinkering with your portfolio too much You want to take a more active role in your investments? That’s good, except if you have a tendency to overmanage. This often happens with retirees, who find themselves with more free time than ever before, and take a keen interest in chasing performance.

In the research paper, “Trading is hazardous to your wealth,” authors Brad Barber and Terrance Odean found that, on average, households turned over 75% of their equity portfolios annually and underperformed by 1.5% each year.2 The biggest cause of this is mistiming when to buy and sell a particular fund. People are often driven by the desire to own more of that “hot” stock in rising markets when others are buying, or by “fear” in falling markets when others are selling. In a diversified portfolio, you’ll always be tempted to adjust the portfolio exposure in favor of the best-performing asset classes. The problem is, acting on that temptation may be costing you.

So what’s the trick to saving for retirement? Actually, there is none. Start saving for retirement today, and stick with it. No gimmicks, no magic timing and no schemes that will “pay off big.” Just old-fashioned discipline.

Project Help’s Art Poster Contest Deadline Extended

W

hat? It’s March?? How can that be? Wasn’t it just Thanksgiving???

That’s the feedback Project Help has gotten from art teachers across the state. Many teachers and art students want to participate in the organization’s annual Art Poster Contest, but time got away from them over the holiday season.

We don’t want to leave anyone out, so the deadline for the contest has been pushed forward to March 20.

Here’s what you need to know...

In 2019 the veteran’s aid group successfully launched its mobile closet, a repurposed school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide.

Based on that milestone event Project Help has chosen its theme for the Third Annual Poster Contest. Art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help bus and how it will benefit veterans in need of assistance.

Last year hundreds of school children from throughout New Jersey submitted their handiwork. This year thousands are expected to participate.

school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. Art teachers already have the contest details in hand so all that is needed are some innovative ideas and the sky is the limit imagination!

Individual teachers can also reach out to Project Help to sign up and young artists can participate independently if their schools aren’t entering the contest.

All artwork will need to be submitted by the new deadline March 20. Entries will be judged on design, originality and content.

Prizes will be awarded in four grade level groups.

The winners and their families will be invited to a dinner award ceremony.

Winning entries will be displayed on social media, the Project Help website and at events to support the mission of serving our veterans.

West Essex High School Theater Showcases Brand New Renovations

To the delight of everyone, they recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to proudly showcase their brand-new renovations to their school auditorium.

Often the school’s auditorium is considered to be the hub of the school for students: From concerts to plays, presentations, lectures, ceremonies and more. It is a place where people gather and memories are made.

But when those events are tarnished by outdated lighting, sound or atmosphere, those memories can be tarnished as well.

Vamping up the auditorium, these extensive upgrades included: Lighting

I Remember Dad: God and Country

By Richard Mabey Jr. ome of the most endearing memories of my Dad are of the times when he served as a Sexton at the Boonton United Methodist Church. Dad loved his church. He dedicated over a decade of his life to cleaning and maintaining his beloved church.

Dad began serving as the Church Sexton in the Summer of 1981. At the time, Dad was still working as a long distance truck driver. Generally speaking, on Wednesday evenings after supper, Dad would climb into his little Ford Ranger pickup truck and drive off to the church to clean it. I often went with Dad. I really don’t know how my father did it all. When he started working as a Sexton he was 53 years old. I would often see the fatigue in Dad’s eyes as he drove down Route 202, on his way to the church.

Dad would put in two to three hours of cleaning time on Wednesday nights. Then on Saturday mornings, he would get up early and eat breakfast. I often got up early on Saturday mornings, to help him clean the church. Right after breakfast we would make sandwiches. Then, throw in a couple of apples with a few oatmeal cookies in little brown bags. We would make tea and

coffee at the church, for our lunch break.

When we got to the church, Dad and I would start vacuuming and scrubbing. I was always amazed at how hard my Dad worked. Dad was an incredibly hard working man. He truly loved his church. Dad did get paid for being the Church Sexton. I don’t think he reported to the Minister, even half of the hours he worked. It was Dad’s way of giving of himself to the Lord.

Dad retired as a long distance truck driver in June of 1989. To my amazement, Dad then devoted even more time to the cleaning and the upkeep of his church. Thus, donating a lot more hours of labor to the church.

Dad served as Sexton of the Boonton United Methodist Church till the Summer of 1992. His bout with prostate cancer, made it nearly impossible for him to carry on his duties as Church Sexton.

In the Spring of 1987, Reverend Leon Weaver presented Dad with the well earned God and Country Award. This is an award given by both the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. Dad served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 for over 25 years. Dad truly earned this prestigious award.

5 Tips for Traveling by Air with Children

pring, for some families, means packing bags and heading to the airport for a getaway. However, flying with young children can be stressful.

“New experiences can be exciting for some children, but they can also be frightening, especially if it’s your child’s first time flying,” said Linda Nelson, a program developer on KinderCare’s education team. “Talking about what will happen can help your family manage expectations and focus on the fun of travel.”

Consider these ideas to help make family airplane travel an enjoyable adventure for everyone.

Schedule Flights Smartly If you have the ability, pick a flight that works with your child’s current eating and sleeping schedules. Aim for a flight that occurs between mealtimes, and try to fly during normal naptime.

Be Ready for Jet Lag If you’re going to cross time zones, plan ahead to combat jet lag. Two weeks before traveling, start making small adjustments to your family’s schedule by moving bedtime 20 minutes toward the time zone you’ll be traveling. Wait a few days then adjust your schedule again. When you get to your destination, try to stick to your child’s regular schedule by taking naps and going to bed as close to his or her normal times as possible.

Pack the Essentials At the airport, you’ll want to move nimbly and handsfree, so opt for a backpack as your carry-on. Pack a change of clothes for each member of the family, diaper wipes, tissues, lotion and lip balm. If your child uses a pacifier, attach

it to your child’s clothing using a clip. It can help soothe the pressure in his or her ears during takeoff and landing. Also consider packing books, crayons, markers, pencils, paper, activity books and age-appropriate toys to keep your child occupied.

Remember the Snacks Low blood sugar can turn even the sweetest kids into champion tantrum throwers, so be sure to bring along plenty of healthy snacks in case delays disrupt regular mealtimes. Consider options like homemade granola or protein bars, fresh fruits and veggies, sandwiches or almond-butter pouches. If your flight is long, try to pack snacks that won’t create lots of crumbs you’ll have to live with until you arrive at your destination. Also remember a spill-proof cup or water bottle you can fill before boarding.

Mind the Rules Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are there to help passengers, but there are also rules that must be followed. Consider these airport regulations before traveling: Medically necessary liquids like baby formula, baby food, juice and breast milk are not subject to the 3.4-ounce limit.

Children under the age of 12 are not required to remove their shoes during screening.

If you’re flying within the United States, children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult usually don’t need more identification than a boarding pass. However, some airlines may ask for a birth certificate for lap infants. Call ahead of time to see which documents you need.

As a result, 60% of households are unprepared for a financial shock, with 41% unable to cover an unexpected $400 expense without borrowing money or selling a personal item.

This makes saving incredibly challenging, especially for many low-income households.

“The data makes it quite clear that a significant segment of America is struggling to create a meaningful savings account, whether it’s intended as an emergency fund or a means of attaining a goal without incurring debt,” said Deborah Winshel, global head of social impact at BlackRock.

Last year, the firm launched its Emergency Savings Initiative, a program designed to help people living on low incomes gain access to, and increase usage of, savings strategies and tools to help establish important safety nets.

As with any financial matter, there’s no one “right” way to save. Individual circumstances require a customized approach to determine the best method to fit needs. In addition to traditional saving methods, Common Cents Lab, Commonwealth and the Financial Health Network are working

with financial institutions and other enterprises on an initiative to create new and experimental programs that address the challenges many consumers face when it comes to saving money.

Automated Savings Often offered as an option through employer payroll, this approach allows you to designate a portion of your paycheck to be deposited in a savings account. Whether you choose to make it a flat amount or percentage of your income, it’s an easy method that allows you to consistently funnel money into savings with a one-time setup process.

Round Up Some financial institutions offer programs in which every transaction you make on your account, or perhaps just those made using your debit card, are rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. The difference between that whole dollar amount and your actual purchase amount is then directed into your savings account.

Prize-Linked Savings Marrying the fun of winning prizes and a savings account, this type of program incentivizes personal saving by offering an on-going, risk-free chance to win a prize, such as additional cash, by making savings account deposits. Promising both security and opportunity (and perhaps some fun), the amount deposited by the account holder is never at risk, unlike lotteries and games of chance.
