Phase One of the school’s Mountaineer Legacy Walkway project, involving the installation of a Legacy Walkway constructed of bricks purchased in a fundraiser initiated by the West Orange High School PTA, was unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on June 12.

Phase Two of the fundraiser is scheduled to kick off in September, and Phase Three will occur in the spring of 2019, according to West

Palmucci said fundraising at the high school level is challenging, and that the PTA “does not do any fundraising per se,” because every sports team and club is also doing the same.

However, this past school year, the PTA

made a decision to move ahead with a fundraiser to help support students, clubs, scholarships, trips, initiatives, teachers’ grants and school community programs.

PTA Fundraising Chair Lori McCollum proposed the sale of customizable, personalized bricks in an ongo-

ing, year-to-year fundraiser to create a walkway on the Conforti side of the building leading to the athletic fields.

The PTA executive board embraced the idea, as did Principal Hayden Moore.

Palmucci added that despite this enthusiasm, getting started on the project took longer than expected and involved several preliminary steps.

These steps included obtaining two construction permits from the Township of West Orange, as well as back-and-forth negotiations and discussions with the company that would produce the customized bricks.

Once the hurdles were cleared, the bricks went on sale to anyone who wished to purchase them including students, families and businesses, at a special “early bird” price in effect from April 18 through May 4. About 150 to 175 bricks were sold during this period,

with 4 inch x 8 inch bricks available for $60 and 8 inch x 8 inch bricks available for $100.

Abraham and Sons, a local company, laid the initial portion of bricks in early June, and the PTA filled in the surrounding area with mulch and plants in time for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“We will continue the Legacy Walkway fundraiser starting in September through October and hopefully lay the next set of bricks in early November,” Palmucci noted. “Then, we will reintroduce the fundraiser in the spring and lay another set of bricks in June.”

When the fundraiser officially opens come fall, orders for bricks will be available online only, at www.woboe.org/ walkway. Prices will be $75 per 4 inch x 8 inch brick and $100 per 8 inch x 8 inch brick.

Palmucci said overall response to the fundraiser and

the concept of the Legacy Walkway has been very positive.

West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, said he is not surprised by such a surprise.

“The Legacy Walkway Project was and is a great initia-

tive,” he stated. “In addition to helping raise money, it provides an opportunity for families to leave a permanent reminder of their time within our schools. We were happy to include our family in this project.

Hopefully, the Legacy Walkway will eventually extend the entire length of the school.”

While funds are not readily available to continue such a composer in residence program annually, organizers hope to orchestrate such similar opportunities in the future.

Lewis Kelly, West Orange High School director of bands and director of the wind ensemble, instated a brand new WOHS Music Boosters funded Composer-in-Residence program just this year and invited Bruce Yurko to participate.

Yurko led the Cherry Hill High School East Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Chamber Music program up until 2005 and also conducted the Cherry Hill High School West Wind Ensemble. He was director Same-day delivery.

West Orange Students Honored For Original Film In Ten Day Challenge

By Dawn M. Chiossi he West Orange High School Film Team has been honored for winning Best 10 Day Film of 2018 from the 10 Day Challenge Competition Awards. Made up of students: Thomas Hughes, writer, director, editor, cinematographer; Dane Clark II, Lourdes Korczukowski, Rajeev Persad, Isabel Olden, who were the actors; and Joaquin Goodbar, creator of musical score, these talented students won for their original student film entitled “Deadlines.” The awards ceremony took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on June 10.

These aspiring artists along with West Orange High School Dramatic Arts Teacher of 9-12 grade students, Wendy Mapes, attended the awards ceremony, where they viewed all 20 films selected, excitedly anticipating all the way.

And the honors just keep rolling in for this hard working student film team.

In addition to the honor of being named Best Film, they were also awarded an impressive Best Performance Award.

luck. All of this followed West Orange’s state win for the film on April 13!

Originating in 2010, The 10 Day Film Challenge is the nation’s number one high school film festival, raising the bar for aspiring student filmmakers. With this event, students can envelop themselves in an intense, dynamic, and energizing endeavor.

In the span of a little more than a week, that’s 10 classroom periods, they can go from student to filmmaker.

In addition to creating, scripting, shooting, scoring, and editing their film, students must also include all of the required elements dictated to them on their first day. Six Ways To Help Prevent Bullying

utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive.

Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part.

1. Don’t be a bystander.

It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up.

But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life.

2. Stop sibling bullying at home. You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there.

3. Enlist the help of adults.

If you see a need for increased adult supervision at high-risk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult.

4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bul-

lying banner and use social media to advertise the fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence.

5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop.

6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying.

Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully.

Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

St. Barnabas Breaks Record For Most Kidney Donations, Celebrates Chain Of Donors

By Dawn M. Chiossi veryone knows how chains can be strong and durable, how they can fasten and bond, how they can be long lasting. In the case of a chain made up of people, they echo and resonate with the best of vibrations; vibrations that will last for generations and beyond.

Such is the case on Monday, June 11, in the most inspiring of events, St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, a member of RWJ Barnabas Health, celebrated a chain of special people known as living kidney donors and recipients. This moving and emotional ceremony was held at West Orange’s Wilshire Grand Hotel from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when more than 120 people swarmed to show their support, celebrate them and wish them well.

Living Kidney Donors are individuals who donated their organs so that others battling kidney failure would have a second chance at life. Debunking the myth that only matches can come from a loved one, this living kidney donor chain is essentially strangers helping strangers. During the celebration, recipients and donors met face to face, realizing just how one man’s life touches so many other lives. People who attended this great event witnessed for themselves the actual human faces and souls behind organ donations and medical procedures.

The strength of this particular chain is ever enduring, and the vibrations they cast are the voices of those who sought to make a difference in the lives of others.

In a sequence of 46 people,

23 donors and recipients and counting, this is the largest kidney transplant chain to ever take place at one hospital. St. Barnabas Hospital, is, in effect, shattering the record for the most living donor transplant kidney donations.

This tidal wave of generosity began unknowingly in October 2017, with just one person making the utterly altruistic decision to become a living donor to help a stranger. That person was Caldwell’s Brian Glennon.

When he volunteered to be an altruistic kidney donor in St. Barnabas Medical Center’s kidney-paired donation program, he had no way of knowing that his sincere, straightforward desire would create the most heartwarming of ripple effects: An impressive 15 way kidney swap- where others were inspired to donate just as Glen-

non had done.

Now just that one desire, just that one act, created a veritable procession of altruistic kidney donors, people who just wanted to help others.

Impressively, more than a dozen lives were saved so far!

Glennon, father of four, and a self-avowed stay at home dad, is humble regarding being the original donor and all that has transpired since.

“Something was missing from my life. I wanted to give back,” he states simply. For Glennon, donating a kidney wasn’t even a question. “We all have two kidneys and we only need one.”

The outpouring of support for this event has been so awe-inspiring, from the public, to the media, to social media, and it has spread so far, that continued on page 11

Those at St. Barnabas are thrilled.

“This is the longest, largest single center kidney transplant chain that has been performed in the United States,” asserts Dr. Stuart R. Geffner, surgical

director Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division and chair of Surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital.

When it comes to random acts of kindness, people don’t always know if their generous actions will make a difference.

But as this chain of living kidney donors can attest, sometimes that knowledge will pop up in the most miraculous and inspiring of ways. And the results will echo for more than a lifetime.

Yurko appreciated the professionalism of both the band-instrumental music faculty and students as well as chatting with students at each rehearsal.

“All musicians were well prepared with my music,” Yurko says, “They are amazing student musicians. The concert was one to remember for all. This is one of the top music programs in the state of New Jersey. Thank you to the administration for fostering musical excellence as well as a complete music education for all of the students.”

However, this was not the first time Yurko has done this for Kelly. A few years ago Kelly and the West Orange High School Wind Ensemble commissioned and premiered Yurko’s piece “Mysterious Dreams for Wind Ensemble”

and Yurko was asked to guest conduct.

Unfortunately, West Orange High School does not have the resources to fund this composer-in-residence program annually.

“We hope to in the near future bring in a guest soloist to work with the bands or a different composer,” says Kelly.

Yurko will resume teaching composition at Rowan. In the fall, he plans on debuting another one of his original pieces, “In Memoriam Dean Witten.”

Conducted by Joseph Higgins, this composition is in honor of Dean Witten, the head of the Percussion Department. Witten passed away this past year.

“His passing was felt by the entire student population as well as the faculty,” says Yurko, “He was an amazing musician and heart felt human being.”

Kelly has known Yurko, a now retired New Jersey band director, for almost 20 years through serving on the AllState Band Committee together.

Yurko came to the school to rehearse with the students many times throughout April and May. For the Spring Band

He points out that West Orange High School is very proud of their tradition of aiding students in their pursuit of the arts. “We seek for our students to hone their creative skills. We cultivate that talent and push for it.”

The film was the brainchild and passion of Hughes, who had been bitten by the writing bug early, and has been writing screenplays all throughout middle and high school. When asked about “Deadlines” recent honors, Hughes is both humble and confident regarding his creation.

“This was an extremely interesting experience to say the least,” he enthuses. “It was really special. The competition was really good.”

Passionate regarding his

craft, he has nothing but good things to say about the team and the whole experience. “My actors were absolutely fantastic so was absolutely confident we’d win.” Even with that confidence, it was the win for “Best Film,” that he categorizes it as an “incredible surprise.” What an honor. It really says something.”

He and the West Orange team, who met in Mapes’ class and just all hit it off, submitted a previous film to the 10 Day Film Competition last year when they won the “Audience Choice” award for his mockumentary film “Dalton Vs Malcom.”

Hughes writes a variety of genres, enjoying the details and challenges of them all.

“I don’t want to pigeonhole myself in any specifics,” he remarks.

Moore describes Hughes as a “quiet storm,” someone beyond his years, someone who is both an athlete, but quiet and extremely involved in the arts, who is perceptive and smart. “Tom’s very open to every single kid in this school.”

Moore praises. “I’ve no doubt he’ll succeed by pushing past his comfort zone.”

“The attention we’ve been getting is kind of crazy,” Hughes shares.

“We joke that the film has really put West Orange on the map,” Moore jokes.

“I loved working on the film,” Hughes prides, “It’s really surreal, seeing all the hard work that everyone put into this. It’s a dream come true, it’s fantastic. I’m just so proud that everyone will get to see it.”

Also elated, Mapes concludes, “I was so excited for my students. It may sound corny, but I felt like I was at the Oscars!”

Water Safety Tips Important To Follow Year Round

I

t’s the “good old summertime,” a chance to share time with friends and families outdoors: at parties, barbecues and perhaps at the local swimming pool, nearby lake or even the ocean. With the warmer weather and easy access to the outdoors, safety - and particularly water safety - remains a concern when it comes to loved ones, especially small children.

Here are some tips to keep everyone safer in and around the water.

To lower the risk, designate a water watcher. Learn and practice lifesaving skills. Know the basics of swimming including floating, moving through water, CPR and first aid.

When near water ensure the phone is fully charged, turned on and available.

Install a four-sided isolation fence with self-closing and self-latching gates around backyard swimming pools.

Install a pool alarm.

Always check the pool first.

Never leave water in buckets, wading pools or inflatable pools.

Swim lessons should not be seen as “drown proofing.”

Avoid inflatable swimming aids - they are not a substitute for approved life vests and often give children and parents a false sense of security.

Know the signs of drowning for oneself and others. If exhibiting signs of drowning, stop and float.

1 - “My child is too young to learn to swim” – Statistics compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation prove that when parents put their child in formal swimming lessons, it reduces their risk of drowning by 88 percent.

2 - “The lifeguard will watch them.” – Drownings at pool parties are swift and silent, and usually take place with adults standing only feet away from the pool. Put the cell phone away, forget about all the other things that need to get done and give young children 100 percent of attention when they are near or around water.

Assign Water Watcher Cards – these designate an adult as the Water Watcher for a certain amount of time, such as a 15-minute period, to prevent lapses in supervision.

3 - “My child is water safe.”

– Janet Evans says: “No child is

ever water safe. I am an Olympic champion, and I am not water safe! I could trip on the pool deck, hit my head and fall in.” As a USA Swimming Foundation Ambassador, I stress the importance of keeping children “safer” in and around the water, giving us one less thing to worry about.” Always ask, “Is there risk involved? How can I reduce the risk for my children?” As a family, learn to identify the risks associated with activities in, on, or around water.

4 - “I can solely rely on water wings to teach my kids to swim.” – Parents think that water wings help their kids learn how to swim, but most water safety advocates do not recommend them because they give children a false sense of security. When a child accidentally falls in a pool it is generally without water wings. They need to know how to swim without them. Swimming aids such as water wings or noodles are fun toys for kids, but they should never be used in place of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD). 5 - “My pool is safe.” – Drain Entrapments: Parents should make sure that their pool’s drain and pump systems are compliant with current state and federal regulations; find information at Pool Safely.gov.

Long hair should always be secured when swimming so that it does not become trapped in a faulty drain. Don’t be shy about asking your local public pool if their drains and pump systems are compliant. Also keep the deck free of toys and other objects, so no child can trip and fall into the pool. It’s important to teach kids proper pool and spa behavior, and to make sure that they are aware of the safety rules. Inflatable pools can be as dangerous as a regular pool; empty and turn over or deflate when not in use.

6 - “I can leave the pool for a few minutes to answer the phone or grab something from the house.” – Once again, no child is ever pool- or water-safe.

Drowning is silent and can take less than a minute. Never take eyes off a child while they are in a body of water for any reason. Never leave a baby in the tub even for a second. Children drown in bath seats and rings quickly and silently. Siblings cannot properly supervise a young child in this situation. If a child cannot swim, stays within arm’s reach of the child. Even in a portable pool.

7- “I don’t need a gate around my pool.” – Children can slip out of homes and into a pool unnoticed - even children with swimming abilities could run into trouble. Home pools, along with hot tubs and Jacuzzis, should have a self-locking

gate around them if children are present in and around the home at any time. For pool owners: Install four-sided isolation fencing; use pool alarms; hot tubs should be covered and locked when not in use; portable pools need to be treated with the same caution.

8 - “If I can’t find my child, I should search the house before checking the pool.” – If a home has a pool, it should be the very first place to look.

Once again, drowning is swift and silent. Know which child’s friends and neighbors have pools. Make sure the child will be supervised by an adult while visiting.

9 - “I’ll know what to do if my child needs help.” – Every adult should know CPR and the actions to take if they find a child unconscious in a pool.

One can never be too prepared. CPR administered in a timely manner can prevent brain damage and be the difference between life and death.

Parents have a million things to do but getting CPR certified should be on the top of the list.

It will give tremendous peace of mind – and the more peace of mind to have as a parent, the better. The American Red Cross, local hospitals, fire departments and recreation departments offer CPR training.

Keep rescue equipment and a first aid kit poolside. Know how to use the rescue equipment.

Have an emergency action plan for family and have a phone with emergency numbers programmed into speed dial.

Swimming skills at a young age are most important.

Children are safer when they master swimming skills at an early age. Qualified instructors in many public and private community swimming
