Honoring Those Who Died on September 11

By Steve Sears y Life Publications remembers and honors those who died in the attacks of September 11, 2001. We reached out to each county in our publishing area for information about their dedicated 9/11 memorials.

Bergen County 147 county residents were among the almost 3,000 who died during the 9/11 attacks.

A 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial is located in the Henry Hoebel Area of Overpeck Park next to Fort Lee Road in Leonia.

Essex County On Sunday, October 20, 2002, the Essex County September 11th Eagle Rock Memorial was dedicated and unveiled. Added in 2009 was the Flight Crew Memorial, a tribute to the pilots and flight attendants on the four airplanes that crashed that day, and in 2011, a 7,400-pound steel and concrete artifact from the World Trade Center site and a bronze plaque recognizing the heroism of EMS personnel was added. In 2016, the Essex County Search and Rescue Dog Statue was then dedicated at the site to commemorate the role that dogs had in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon after the attacks.

“After the attacks, people spontaneously came to Eagle Rock Reservation to view the tragedy unfold at the Twin Towers and leave cards, letters, photos and flowers in an impromptu memorial in honor of their loved ones,” says Essex County Executive, Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr. “I knew immediately that this was the natural location for a memorial because of the public attraction to this site and the unparalleled view of the World Trade Center from the lookout area. Our September 11th Memorial is a special place for people to come for solace and comfort because of its unique location and its powerful message of peace and hope.” The Essex County September 11th Eagle Rock Memorial is located in Essex County Eagle Rock Reservation off of Eagle Rock Avenue in West Orange.

Morris County Following the attacks in which 64 people from Morris County perished, a committee was formed which included the family members of people who died, to help locate a site for the memorial, raise funding for its construction, continued on page 2

continued from front page and select a sculptor to design it. The Morris County 9/11 Memorial was constructed on county-owned property in 2003 and dedicated on September 10 of that same year during a candlelight vigil.

The memorial is located at 460 West Hanover Avenue, at Morris County 9/11 Memorial Park.

“Everyone in Morris County came together to site, fund and build our 9/11 memorial after that terrible day in 2001,” says Morris County Commissioner, Douglas Cabana. “Every bit of it symbolizes our grief for those lost, our resolve to continue living as a free nation and stand up to oppression, and our hope that future Americans will find a bright future. To this day, more than 20 years after the attacks, the memorial remains an important part of life here. Every week, Morris County tends to that memorial. We have people cleaning the walkways and the pool, replacing the flowers and wiping down the plaques. It is visited almost daily by residents and visitors from outside our county. We will never forget.”

Passaic County The 9/11 Memorial is located at the Public Safety Academy at 300 Oldham Road in Wayne.

County Surrogate Frank Bruno was able to obtain a piece steel from the World Trade Center, which is a permanent part of the memorial. The design, featuring a clock tower which reads, “Time to Remember,” was developed by county staff artist Linda Brady. The concept was converted into architectural drawings produced by The Musial Group of Mountainside. Construction was

The Union County September 11 Memorial

Warren County Emergency Services and 9/11 Memorial

Union County Dedicated on Sept. 13, 2003, the Union County September 11 Memorial is located on a hilltop at the border of Mountainside and Springfield in Union County’s Echo Lake Park.

Two girders recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center are arranged within a five-sided area representing the Pentagon, and an Eternal Flame represents those who died in Pennsylvania along with members of the Armed Services and emergency responders. The names of the 60 deceased Union County residents are

Warren County The Warren County Emergency Services and 9/11 Memorial site was dedicated in 2011, and the monument itself was completed for September 11, 2012 in memory of the four Warren County residents who died on September 11, 2001.

Local Songwriter Adds to the Morristown Area Music Scene

By Evan Wechman ew Jersey’s own Bobby Syvarth used to play almost every night at the small but intimate venues in Morristown.

He dreamed of being a worldwide sensation like his idols James Taylor and Paul Simon.

He would play all night into the wee hours of the morning, then after a few hours of sleep, drag himself into a full-time office job. He was in his early 20’s at this time.

Fast forward and Syvarth is now doing things a bit differently, but still contributing greatly to the Morristown music scene.

Older and wiser, Syvarth is not trying to be the next James Taylor anymore. Instead, he works a full-time job as a paralegal in the music and media industry.

The locals will still find him playing events on weekends for causes close to him, but his focus has shifted. “I think as a songwriter putting out original music is one of my unique contributions. There’s a lot of cover or tribute bands and I play in bars where I do covers too. But I think my real contribution is original music that people seem to like,” he said.

Syvarth, who has been playing in the area for about two decades, is touring the most popular venues in Morristown and the entire county promoting his new original album, “Silver Lake Boulevard.”

This five-song album was written by Syvarth and combines many elements from his favorite music genres. “I’m coming out of that Grateful Dead, Fish, Dave Mathews, John Mayer kind of sound where you bring a little more jazz influence into the songs as well,” he said.

His tastes are varied and deep. Syvarth loves the acoustic rock sound of Paul Simon but is also extremely fond of jazz musician Bobby McFerrin. Even though Syvarth jokingly admits people laugh when they learn of his love for McFerrin due to his success of the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, in the 1980’s, he remains firm that he would love to play alongside the jazz great one day.

“He is one of the greatest of all time, so he has been a huge inspiration for me,” Syvarth said. The local songwriter has even recorded covers of McFerrin’s songs on Spotify and believes jazz musicians are more well versed than musicians from other genres. .Though the album is released under his own name, Syvarth, a largely self-taught musician, credits many other musicians for his success. After studying jazz at William Paterson University, he was taken under the wing of many professional musicians who gave their time and advice to him freely.

he collaborated with many professional musicians who have played on albums of many well-known celebrities. Syvarth is especially proud of his relationship with Tom Carbone who produced “Silver Lake Boulevard.”

This is because Syvarth began recording this album right before COVID broke out, and even though there was a long period where they couldn’t play due to the lockdown, Carbone never gave up on him.

According to Syvarth, for himself, Carbone, and every musician who gave a hand to this project, the recording of the album took “a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.”

Syvarth believes in staying loyal to the musicians who have helped him succeed and believes in giving back to the community as well. He has played at fundraisers for the benefit of the environment and has participated in raising funds for breast cancer awareness, most notably at Morristown’s Horseshoe Tavern.

Syvarth, although the songwriter for the album, is fully aware the music he creates is a collaborative effort. He stated that he is extremely appreciative of the knowledge he has been given by many others. He did want to express how bitter-sweet the production of his work has been.

He had the privilege of playing with Rick Chamberlain, the former principal trombon-

ist for the New York City Ballet, who unfortunately lost his life to cancer a short time ago.

“The album was the last thing he recorded and it’s meaningful to me as he was always very generous towards me. This project was the last time I had a chance to record with him,” he said.

Vaccinations: The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective vaccinations that is currently offered in the US. Human Papillomavirus is a virus most commonly associated with cervical cancer and with genital warts. The vaccine is offered to men and women from 9 years- 27 years old or younger to prevent the spread of HPV in the vaccinated individual and decrease both rates of cervical cancer and genital warts. The HPV vaccination is recommended to all women regardless of their sexual orientation. The time before a woman goes to college can be an excellent time for an HPV vaccination series. Most gynecologist offices have the HPV vaccines supplied in their office and would be happy to assist you with this.

One of the Country’s Top Young Archers Calls Oakland, New Jersey Home

By Steve Sears or 18-year-old Kevin Klinedinst, his introduction to the sport of archery all started when he first went bow hunting in New York state.

After getting his hunting license at age 12, he went out looking for deer and, since it was the bow hunting season of October and November, carried a bow and arrow. He missed his first buck by two feet, but he was fascinated aiming at a target and trying to get closer. “Since I became such a big bow hunter after about two years of just practicing in my backyard, and going into ranges and doing fun 3D shoots where you shoot at the fake animals, I kind of realized I wanted to do a little bit more with it, so then I started doing some competitions,” Klinedinst says.

Klinedinst, a recent Indian Hills High School graduate who is now attending Ramapo College, in late July took part in the Buckeye Classic in Ohio, an outdoor national archery competition where he placed sixth.

He was the highest placed finisher from New Jersey, and he competed as a member of Team USA Hornets, the national archery team.

Those before-mentioned competitions took place in 2017 when he was 14-yearsold, and it was a beginning that has led to his becoming one of the top young archers

in the nation. “My shooting was kind of rigid,” he says of his early days competing. “It obviously wasn’t the best, but I didn’t care actually. I know a lot of people want to shoot competitively but can’t shoot their bow that well, and they don’t go to these competitions. And the only thing I can say is you’re not going to do any better. You can shoot as well as you want in your backyard, but now that you have to step up in front of people and score in front of people, it brings down your score a lot.” For Klinedinst, all of it was a learning experience, but he didn’t give up.

He recalls one competition in Pennsylvania.

“I remember walking into the stadium and seeing just a ton of people, so I stepped up, and there was a lot of arrows going, and shot the best I could. By the time the competition was over, I went up to my dad, and I had forgotten to check my score. I said, ‘That was fun, I want to do it again.’ He then asked me about my score, and I just completely forgot.

I went to check it, and it wasn’t bad. I was impressed with myself. It was the first time (shooting an arrow in competition), and it was kind of a spark. That showed me what this is all about, and I really wanted to do it.”

Much of his free time was now being spent on the archery range, improving his skills, and eventually his scores in competition against the best at his age. And then,

one day in 2020 while he was turkey hunting, he looked down at his phone and saw that he gotten a message from the USA Olympic Archery coach. “I was just around 16 or 17

at the time, so I had been shooting competitively (at a paper target) for a little while and had been winning, so my name was out continued on page 7

Country’s Top Young Archer... continued from page x there a lot. I was winning at all the regionals.” In fact, he had taken first place at the regionals at WA-XO-BE Archers in Monmouth Junction. The Olympic coach asked him to fly down to their headquarters, which was at the Archery Learning Center in Snellville, Georgia. “I got down there, and the coach and a bunch of teammates were just standing there waiting for me to walk through the gate. Then the owner of one of the biggest archery companies in the world walked in, and he knew I was going to be there, and he

came to meet me. It was mind blowing.”

And after training for a week, he learned he’d earned a spot on the Team USA Hornets national team. With the Hornets, Klinedinst has traveled to Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, Kentucky, Arizona, Florida, and California, all prior to his Ohio competition.

For Klinedinst, who trains in New Jersey primarily at Lincoln Park Archers in Montville (“The whole community there is fantastic,” he says), his eyes are on possible Olympic and also future World Cup competitions.

Training to Become a Child Advocate Begins Sept. 29

T

his fall, community members from across Passaic County will once again have the opportunity to join together to begin training to become volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates for children in foster care.

After completing the five-week training, volunteers will be sworn in by the Family Court Judge as official Court Appointed Special Advocates. Volunteers will then be paired up with a child or group of siblings who are in foster care in Passaic County and start advocating on their behalf.

Volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates provide a consistent, caring presence to these children, many of whom have been shuffled around from foster home to foster home and could truly benefit from consistency.

“I find great satisfaction in knowing my efforts can bring about meaningful change for a child whose world has been turned inside out,” said CASA volunteer Gino Arevalo.

Seats are still available for this free training, though they are filling up quickly. Training will be facilitated by Passaic County Court Appointed Special Advocates and will be held in Wayne.

More than 325 Passaic County children

are in foster care in 2021 due to parental abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. Children range in age from newborn up to 18 years old.

“These kids need a voice and aren’t able to speak for themselves,” said Michelle Schaefer of West Milford, who has been a CASA volunteer for more than six years.

Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers do not require any specific educational or professional background. Volunteers are men and women from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. To become a CASA volunteer, a person must be 21 years or older, have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, pass a background check, and complete the training program.

Prior to attending training, volunteers must attend an informational session and fill out a volunteer application. The informational sessions give volunteers an opportunity to learn more about the program and ask questions about the volunteer experience before committing to the training program.

Understanding Tax Terms: Contemporaneous Records Everyone Needs to Know What This Means!

f you have problems getting to sleep at night and you turn to the IRS tax code for help, you might find some vocabulary that is very foreign to you. One of the more uncommon words used by the IRS is the term “contemporaneous.” So what does it mean and why should you care?

Contemporaneous defined According to the IRS, it means that the records used to support a claim on your tax return are created and originated at the same time as your claimed deduction. In other words, if you realize that you forgot to get a receipt for something, you are out of luck if you try to get one at a later date.

Not fair!

Perhaps you know you had the expense, but you simply forgot to get a receipt. You can cry foul, but time and again the IRS has had tax courts uphold their elimination of a taxpayer’s deduction for lack of contemporaneous documentation. Here are some areas where the term contemporaneous is especially important: Charitable contributions Business deductions for expenses and capital purchases Mileage logs

Tip records Gambling losses Business travel expenses The donation of vehicles, boats and planes is often the most cited area where lack of contemporaneous documentation is a problem because these types of donations have a high estimated market value that changes from month to month. But timely, written acknowledgement from the charitable organization is also required for any donation of $250 or more.

the case of a vehicle, make sure the charitable organization gives you a 1098-C that is fully filled out. In addition, make sure the organization uses your vehicle or is a qualified charitable group that allows you to take the full market value of your donation.

If you forget, call right away. As soon as you realize a confirmation or receipt is missing, call to get one sent to you. Request that the receipt be dated as of the date of the service or activity.

Think tax year. Understanding the definition of contemporaneous is important, because it is not always precisely defined. If the documentation is received in the same

year as the donation or transaction, you are usually in good shape.

Keep a log. Many transactions require the correct documentation at the time the activity occurs. This is true with deductible mileage, gambling loses and tip income. So keep a log of your activities as they occur.

Wait to file. To meet the IRS definition of contemporaneous, the receipt or acknowledgement must be received the earlier of either when you file your tax return OR the due date (including extensions) of your tax return. Tips On Caring For Disabled Dogs

D

og disabilities could be a result of illness, physical injury or accidents. Just because your dog is disabled, it should not stop you from enjoying its company. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to help the dog live a normal life and cope with the situation. Below are a few tips to keep your dog happy and healthy, even with its disability.

Assist their movements. Dogs who suffer from mobility problems, such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, spinal disorders, DM in dogs (degenerative myelopathy) or other medical problems that affects their hind legs will need plenty of help moving around. To make things easier for you and the dog, you can buy a special leash that supports its torso and back legs. There are also other tools that assist in mobility problems, such as dog wheelchairs that can be strapped to its back. If you are going to take the dog out to the vet, you will need to carry it into the car since it might have a hard time getting in. You can also use a small and improvised ramp that will help it walk into the car.

Watch their weight. Like humans, overweight dogs have a higher chance of getting sick compared to dogs that stay within their ideal weight. Exercise and a balanced diet are the only things you really need to worry about when it comes to your dog’s weight. Make sure it gets the right amount of exercise by taking it out for walks or jogs. You can also let it run around in an open area like your backyard, front lawn or park.

Never overfeed or underfeed your dog.

Use a good dog food mix or you can feed them meat that you prepared. Check with your vet about your dog’s ideal weight and the best type of diet you can give it.

Regular visits to the doctor. Visiting the vet regularly helps you and your dog’s doctor track the dog’s condition and see if it’s improving or not. By going to the vet, you can detect any problems and stop them before they develop even further. The vet can also advise you on medical procedures and other remedies that can help or cure your dog. Sophia Lewin’s Goal is Clear: To Be National Football League Head Coach

By Steve Sears ophia Lewin ponders the painful memory.

January 23, 2022, Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs facing off in a hotly contested, tight National Football League divisional playoff game.

“I just remember how instant it was,” Lewin says. “Everything was just stripped from us in a minute, and it was so sudden, it was so instantaneous, and really sad.

It was just like a drop, a terrible sinking feeling.” Lewin speaks of the Bills 42 – 36 loss to the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs in overtime. She, an assistant coach with the Bills offense, was in the coaching box that night. The Bills had battled back to take a 36 – 33 lead with :49 left, only to have the Chiefs knot the game on a field goal with :13 seconds left in regulation, and win it with a touchdown with the first possession in overtime. “Obviously, when reflecting, you’re able to learn from it, but it was just one of those things where in the moment it felt like the worst. You just feel for the guys, and that plane ride home was something else. I would just say it was an instant feeling of like a gut punch.”

Enough about that frigid Kansas City evening, and more about Lewin, who currently is a Quality Control Coach, and assists

head coach Bob Surace while also lending a hand with special teams, for the Princeton University Tigers football team.

Heading into her junior year at Wayne Hills High School, Lewin met with her guidance counselor to fill out a schedule for desired classes for her senior year. “At the top of the form,” she says, “it asks you what you want to do professionally, and I put ‘professional football coach.’ Fast forward, Lewin and Surace have discussed it. “He asked me what my goals are, and I told him, ‘To be an NFL head coach,” Lewin explains. “He has mapped out a plan for me, and I know what that plan is and it’s growing, and the reason I am back with him is he has a plan for me to reach the goals that I have, and he has believed in those goals just as much as I believe in them. Absolutely, I see myself as an NFL head coach one day.”

“I don’t really remember a time in my life where I didn’t want sports,” Lewin says. Her father when she was very young propped her up with pillows, and the duo would roll a ball back and forth, and eventually play catch. “I’ve been playing catch with my dad ever since. I feel that the greatest gift in my life is sports, so football was very much a part of that from the beginning, as well as hockey and baseball and basketball. continued from page 12 than right from the very beginning. Some of my first memories are of watching football, and then I was a football player for Halloween when I was five or six. It’s just always been a part of my life, I’ve loved it, and football season is my favorite season.

It’s always been really special for me, and I feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it and I get to call it work.”

Her involvement with football teams began in high school. Wayne Demikoff was taking over as Wayne Hills Patriots head coach, so she met with him. “We discussed what the role for me would be with the team as manager,” Lewin recalls. “I’d be in meetings, but that role sort of expanded because I was so curious and wanted to be around all the time. I got to do loads of different things with that program because of coach Demikoff and the belief and support that he had for me.”

Hawks for four seasons (“I was with the quarterbacks for a year and then was with receivers for the next three years,” Lewin says), spent a season as wide receivers coach at Jersey City’s Hudson Catholic High School, and then headed for the National Football League, where she helped coach the tight ends for the Bills before heading back to Princeton.

Lewin speaks lovingly of her parents. “I think it’s sometimes really difficult for people to understand how I got the job with the Bills, and for me it’s very simple. I’m nothing without my parents. My father instilled a love for sports in me, but also the discipline and the hard work. All of those core values that make me good at my job come from my dad. And then my mother has supported me in a way that’s unconditional.

The best part is being able to share my love and passion for the sport with the people that have helped me the most. They both love me unconditionally, and I think that’s a huge part of my success.”

A September Story

I

By Richard Mabey Jr. n June of 1973, at the age of 19, I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from County College of Morris. It was a tough two years for me. But, it was also a very fulfilling time. I had been stretched like a rubber band. And, I came through it all a wiser and stronger individual.

All through my time at County College of Morris, I worked 29 hours a week at the A&P grocery store in Whippany. There were times when I worked the night shift, from 11:00 at night till 7:00 in the morning. I would punch out from work, climb up the stairs to the rest room, wash my face, wash up a bit and change my shirt. Then, I would buy a cinnamon bun at the A&P and drive off to CCM for an 8:00 class. I remember my class would end at 9:30. I didn’t have another class till 11:00, so I would go to the library, find an isolated corner, and put my face on my forearms on the desk and fall asleep.

I kept a little travel alarm clock in my attaché case, that I also carried my books in.

I took my studies very seriously and managed to make the Dean’s List, for all four semesters at CCM. I also wrote weekly columns and articles for Youngtown Edition, the official college newspaper of CCM. It was a tough time. But I enjoyed every minute of it.

During my time at CCM, I went to a local chiropractor to get my spine adjusted on a regular basis. My chiropractor encouraged me to go to chiropractic school, so I applied to Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. I was accepted and made plans to begin chiropractic college in September.

full time at the A&P. I saved every penny that I could.

And, as the dawn of September became closer, I prepared myself to depart from the old Mabey Homestead. To live away from loved ones and good friends. It was an emotional time, filled with a bit of sadness and yet also a time of hope for new adventures waiting to unfold.

I confess that I did not find chiropractic school easy. Specifically, I had a tough time with chemistry.

In chiropractic college, a student is required to take one semester of inorganic chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, and two semesters of biochemistry. I did get some grades of B’s on my tests, but I mostly got C’s on many of my tests. However, a few times, I actually did ace some of my chemistry exams.

I worked at a grocery store, during my years at Sherman College. Like my days at CCM, I found it all so tough, but also very re-

warding.

I did practice chiropractic for a few years, in a small town in West Virginia. But I was not very successful at it. I will write more about that, in a future article for this newspaper. Fate and destiny called me home to become a writer. It is strange how the angels will set a path for your life.

If you’re facing a tough challenge, please do not give up. There were times, when I was in college, when I thought I wasn’t going to make it. Both at County College of Morris and at Sherman College of Chiropractic. But I did my absolute best to stay tough and be positive. Please, if you are going through a tough time to accomplish a goal that is important to you, do not give up! Never, ever give up!

Wayne Church Welcomes Pastor Ninabeth Metcalf

by Elsie Walker inabeth Metcalf had a career in textiles for 27 years. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she created home furnishings and designed historical reproductions.

Some of her work is in the White House and other historical homes.

She worked everywhere from Paterson to Venice and Florence.

She loved the work, but would tell you, “my shoes didn’t fit”. What she had was a career but not a vocation. However, two events would steer her on a new path, one which led to the ministry. She is a graduate of Drew Theological School with a Master’s of Divinity.

She served two other churches before coming to Wayne in July to become the new pastor of Wayne United Methodist Church, 99 Parish Drive, Wayne.

Two significant events put Metcalf on the road to being a pastor.

She noted that 9/11 “was a wakeup call”. She had a friend who passed away in the tragedy. That event brought about questions

such as, “is there something bigger than me?” Metcalf was still in the textile industry at the time but very involved in church, especially with children’s activities such as Vacation Bible School. Then, in 2003 and still in the textile field, Metcalf saw the price of cotton, usually a stable commodity, rise 300%. It had never risen like that, and it got Metcalf thinking about the causes and climate change.

Also, she got involved with the United Nations and issues of social justice such as indigenous people and mining. She felt herself being drawn to spirituality and ecology.

While she tried to integrate her work and spiritual worlds, clergy recognized gifts in her and told her that she should change careers and become a pastor. At first, she resisted the call. However, her love of God and creation, and the gifts she had, needed to be shared. She wanted to be in a community where she could do that, so she became a minister.

“I love hearing people’s stories (tragic or beautiful) and seeing the Holy Spirit working in other peo-

ple’s lives [towards finding meaning and purpose],” said Metcalf. “I encourage and listen.” she added.

She also walks with people as they transition to death.

Metcalf noted that she helps others deepen their spirituality; sometimes, that is through showing a connection between the person and a Biblical story. “I believe that God is in each person,” she said.

A memorable moment in her ministry came during fellowship at a previous church. The message that Sunday had talked about giving to someone else something that is yours so the other person could have abundant life. During fellowship time after the service, there was always plenty of food.

A homeless man on a bike stopped there. He had all his possessions with him and was travelling from Trenton to Newton to get services.

He had stopped at the church because he was hungry and thought that they’d give him food. He was invited to join them, to sit and eat.

He sat next to a man named Charlie. As they talked, Charlie noticed

the homeless man had shoes but no socks to keep his feet warm.

Charlie excused himself, went to the bathroom, and when he returned, he gave the homeless man his socks. Metcalf said that such actions are God at work, and it brings her to her knees.

Her strength, which she said that many in the Wayne church have already commented upon, is her enthusiasm and aliveness.

In coming to the Wayne church, she feels she brings “hope...an understanding that God is doing something new...I can help this church community move out into the greater community to address their needs and help others to flourish.”

On a personal note, Metcalf will tell you there are eight in her family. She and her husband, Ken, have been married for 36 years and have three adult children.

When asked what she would say if she could address the local community, Metcalf shared, “In this world today, we need the spiritual as much as our minds and bodies. [The church] provides people with the spiritual toolkit to help [them] discover their gifts and thrive.”

Wayne Fire Company No. 2 Celebrates 100 Years

By Steve Sears ayne P.O.L. Fire Company No. 2 celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2022, and it has been a history filled with both happy memories and a few tragedies.

The first discussion of a second Wayne fire company commenced in 1921, when two social clubs, the Joint Property Owners and Bungalow Club, combined to provide fire protection for Wayne. Early firefighting equipment included fire extinguishers and hand-drawn chemical carts, until Joint Property Owners purchased a brand-new Model T Ford chemical truck with electric headlights. It arrived in January 1922, and the members of the Joint Property Owners formed a new organization called the Property Owners League Volunteer Fire Company No. 2. The method of sounding alarms during this period was either by telephone or by striking at railroad locomotive tire rings which were hanging up in various spots throughout the neighborhood.

Frank Velardi has volunteered for Wayne P.O.L. Fire Company No. 2 for 50 years. “My uncle passed away a number of years ago, but when he was alive, he’d say, ‘Do you realize you grew up in a time when the car

was starting to become prevalent, and television was starting to become prevalent?’

Well, here we are 50 years later, and we have the internet. That amount of information available at your fingertips, and what you’re seeing in your lifetime, is absolutely incredible,” Velardi says.

The company’s first firehouse was at Chief Clifford Marshall’s Garage on the corner of Boonton Turnpike and Fayette Avenue, and the first fire alarm that the Model T Ford responded to was for a house fire on Boonton Turnpike that was quickly put out, or so the firefighters thought. However, a second alarm later that night for the same building found it burned to the ground. A disheartening initial result, certainly, but the deaths of firefighters Peter Van Ammers and Valentine Reder in 1924 were tragic.

Out on a call, both died when the pumper truck driven by Van Ammers overturned near Two Bridges Road. Reder was killed instantly, and Van Ammers died while being transported to the hospital.

“I know what it means for my 50 years,” says Kurt Gough, who like Velardi has been a volunteer firefighter for half a century, “But then there’s also my dad and my uncle. What does it mean? It’s in the blood,

it flows down. We’ve made friendships, fought fires, enjoyed ourselves drilling and raising funds. Things are so different now, and we’ve done a lot of stuff together.”

cantly damaged.

“Big difference,” says Gough while comparing the early days of Wayne Fire P.O.L. Company No. 2 to the current. “When we first started, Frank and I, we had large rubber gloves, rubber boots - almost like hip boots - and now the state and local govern-

ment look after all of our equipment. Every 10 years we have to get a new helmet. The trucks back then, they were five speed and manual transmission. Now they’re automatic.

In honor of the 100th anniversary, a celebration dinner was held at the Cosmopol-

itan in Wayne. “At that party we brought in a lot of former members,” Velardi says. “It was kind of fun for me to reminisce and be a part of the planning. Some of the former members were members before we were.

It’s kind of nice for the young guys to see the old faces.”

Norwescap: A Portfolio of Services to Help Those in Need

by Elsie Walker woman had two cigarettes, her kid in the car, nowhere to live and didn’t know where to go. Another woman, who had left her job to be a stayat-home mom and was suddenly abandoned by her husband, needed to get back into the workforce and was looking for help.

Struggling students at Sussex County Community College needed tutoring and other support, and low-income families were missing out on tax refunds because they needed guidance in completing their tax returns. These are just a few of the examples of people helped by Norwescap, a non-profit organization. Started as part of the war on poverty during the Johnson administration, Norwescap is a $22,000,000 comprehensive non-profit social service organization dedicated to serving people and moving them from a place of being in poverty, or on the verge of poverty, to the point where they and their families are thriving. It also helps people advocate for their communities and much more. Serving Hunterdon, Warren, Morris, Somerset and Sussex counties, Norwescap ’s corporate office is at 350 Marshall Street in Phillipsburg.

Recently, Mark Valli, Norwescap’s CEO, talked about the organization and gave just a few examples of the services provided through

the six strategic areas which Norwescap helps: education, employment, health and nutrition, financial capacity building, housing and energy service, and volunteer and civic engagement.

While the organization helps those in poverty, Valli noted that a large percentage of those it helps are ALICEs: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. That means that they are people who are working but are just one payment, one illness, one paycheck away from struggling. Valli noted that though people may come to the organization with one need, their situation is such that they usually have more needs. Norwescap is not just one program but a portfolio of services. About 90% of its funding comes from the government (federal, state, county, and municipal) and 10% from donors and grants.

The latter helps in funding programs where participation might have been restricted by government rules.

Norwescap offers services in the area of education with early childhood education, child care, and the Sussex County Community College “Degree Up” program being some examples. “[We are] the leading early childhood education non-profit in the northwest corner of the state. We are a major Head Start provider,” noted Valli. Norwescap has Head Start centers scattered around four dif-

Norwescap... continued from page 24 unteers who tutor and provide a willing ear to listen (when needed), an on-site food pantry and information on Norwescap services.

Valli shared that analysis done has shown that those who participate in the Degree Up program are much more likely than their counterparts to complete their studies and matriculate. “It shows you that sometimes you really just need a little support to help you get through….. most community college kids are probably holding a job somewhere.

They have other things going on, so having a little bit of support to get them through the rough patches really helps improve their outcome,” said Valli.

Another area Norwescap addresses is employment. Valli talked about the Career and Life Transitions Center and the Pathways 2 Prosperity program. A Career and Life Transitions Center helps those who haven’t been in the workforce for a while or are entering it for the first time or need to upscale. Valli noted that one example of a person who graduated the program is a woman now on the Norwescap board. “She had three kids, all of whom had special needs. Her husband, at some point, decided that that was too much for him and he left, and then she had a struggle…[to] figure out on her own [what to do]. She had left a career in New York to raise her family and now she’s on her

own, and so she didn’t know where to turn.

She called her Career and Life Transitions Center, didn’t do anything for a few months, and then called again.” Valli notes that the woman, though shy at first, completed the program and built her network (through peer-to-peer sharing and support) and is now pursuing a career in corporate America.

Another program, Pathways 2 Prosperity, in Sussex County, is peer-networking where a group meets once a week for dinner to work on personal and professional goals and to help each other.

Norwescap also helps with financial capacity building, improving the financial well-being of low income individuals and families. Valli shared two of the programs that fall under that. One program, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), offers free tax help to low-moderate income individuals and families, including young adults, adults, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those with limited English. Another program helps participants to open a savings account, with Norwescap matching the funds put into it, to save for a purchase of a major asset like a home.

Health and nutrition are areas many know Norwescap for. It has a food bank, which means that it is a distribution center.

Norwescap... continued from page 25 He noted that in the borough of Sussex, Norwescap runs an 11 -unit senior housing complex. It also does housing counseling, helping people save for a home, providing them with information on how to get to that point where they’re able to purchase their own home. Also, Norwescap provides supplemental support to help those having problems paying utility bills, getting a tank of oil, air conditioning, etc.

“When a community is engaged, you get better health outcomes,” shared Valli as he started to talk about the last strategic area in which Norwescap offers help: Volunteerism and Civic Engagement. “We help people to advocate for themselves, advocate for their communities.” He noted that through a tax credit program, Norwescap was able to purchase a single-family home which had been an abandoned lodgings bar, renovate it and will be turning it over in a couple of months to a low income family. “So that’s taking what was a vacant home for over a dozen years in downtown Phillipsburg …on the main track, by the way, making it into a viable home, helping to improve not just the family’s asset but also to help improve the neighborhood,” said Valli. In addition, he shared, “We did more than that. We’ve been able to purchase banners and flags to

help market businesses and put planters in downtown Phillipsburg.” Norwescap has also organized community get- togethers and organized community events. Right now, the focus has been on Phillipsburg but that will be expanded. One of Valli’s favorite stories is how Norwescap was able to help small businesses when they were shut down due to COVID-19. “We were able to access funding from the state to provide direct grants, over $500,000 in direct grants, to small businesses to keep them afloat…. to pay their utility bills, to be able to help pay their rent, able to help pay for PPE and other things, so we literally invested half a million dollars in small businesses …to keep them alive during COVID-19.” In addition, some of that money went to helping businesses establish an online presence and e-commerce so they could pivot the way they were doing business. Also, Norwescap has a variety of volunteer opportunities including ones through Americorps and AmeriCorps seniors. People can find out more about those by looking at the Norwescap website.

Beloved Friendships

By Richard Mabey Jr. n the beginning of September of 1971, I turned 18. And also, in the early part of September, I began my studies at County College of Morris. At the time, CCM did not have the number of buildings that it now has. It was a beautiful campus and all of the professors that I had, were very dedicated to the fine art of teaching.

I had signed up for a tennis course. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 8:00 sharp my tennis class would begin.

There was a young woman in my class, Teresa, whom I became good friends with. It was a most strange time for me. Because I was still dating my high school sweetheart, Penny Lancaster.

Penny and I had began dating, the summer of 1969, when I had just finished my sophomore year at Boonton High School.

Our parents were both members of the Trailmates Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. About twice a month, the members of this club would go camping at a New Jersey state park. Some of their favorite places to camp included Swartswood, Stokes, and Allaire State Parks.

Penny was a year younger than me. So, when I began my freshman year of college, Penny was a senior at Eastside High School

in Paterson. Penny and I were best friends.

We both enjoyed writing poetry, we were both avid readers, and Penny was always encouraging me to put my feelings and thoughts down on paper. Penny was an important person in my coming of age, in my last two years at Boonton High School.

But now I was developing a close friendship with Teresa. After our tennis class was over, Teresa and I would go to the college cafeteria and have breakfast together. It was all such a quaint and charming friendship. However, it left me feeling very guilty and confused, for I was developing heartfelt feelings for Teresa. And, sadly, Penny and I were finding that we had less and less time to see each other. For at the time, I was attending CCM full time and working 29 hours a week at the A&P. I always cherished having Teresa in my tennis class and having breakfast with her after tennis classes. Part of me always wanted to ask Teresa for a date, or at the very least, ask her for her telephone number.

But I had this strong inner feeling that it would be all so wrong, that I needed to be true blue to Penny.

Penny and I continued to date during my freshman year at CCM. But we both knew, deep in our hearts, that we were drifting

apart. It was no fault of either one of us.

Our ships were now sailing in different directions. Penny had developed a great interest in oceanography.

While I did my best to support Penny’s new love for the science of life within the deep blue sea, it just didn’t spark a flame

within me. Also, Penny had gotten a job as a lifeguard at the Paterson YMCA. Penny was a great swimmer, while I was at best, a mediocre swimmer.

In June of 1972, I completed my first year of college. Penny graduated, with high continued on page x

Sometimes people come into our life for a season and a reason. When I was in high school, I was painfully shy. Penny helped me to overcome my shyness. She encouraged me to join the staff of my high school newspaper. When I began my studies at CCM, new people began to come into my life. Sadly, between attending CCM, doing homework, and working at the A&P, there was less and less time to see Penny.

Hold dear to the friends in your life. But know that sometimes, there comes a time when the best gift you can give a friend, is to let them go and move on to new vistas in their life. It isn’t easy. And, yes, it does hurt.

But truly, sometimes people come into our life for a very specific purpose. And sadly, when they have fulfilled that purpose, they may need to move on and no longer be a close friend. It’s just the way life is sometimes.

She had become more and more obsessed with an immense love for life deep within the ocean. We found ourselves talking less and less about the fine art of writing poetry.

In September of 1972, Penny began attending Rutgers University. We would write each other, but within a couple of months, our letters to each other became further and further apart. It was in the very month of September of 1972, that I did see Teresa in the student center. We sat and talked for a short time. Teresa talked and talked about the wonderful boy she had met during the summer. There was a certain sadness that filled my heart when I saw a spark in her Teresa’s eyes as she talked about her new boyfriend. Part of me deeply regrated never having asked Teresa for her phone number, when we were close friends, the year before.

Newspaper Reporter Writes Moving Book on OCD

By Evan Wechman ver since I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing for different publications in New Jersey, including this one for several years. However, my dream has always been to complete a book that adds something of value to the community.

Unfortunately, since I was a child, I’ve suffered immensely from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which has taken its toll on both me and my family. There were a lot of things I wanted to accomplish in my life that got sidetracked due to this illness which is all too prevalent.

For me, the turning point came when as a young adult, my father confided in me that he had OCD and was still able to make a good life for himself. He also told me he would always love me and believed I could get better.

That changed everything and, in my book, “Family Illness,” this beautiful story is told. My father passed away from Covid in 2020 and I never got the chance to present him with a copy. This book was intended to be my way of letting my Dad know he was my hero, and that I never would have survived without his love.

My father who taught at several universities throughout New Jersey including Ramapo College and Saint Peters University grew up in a time when mental health was not discussed and was forced to live in silence for a great period of time. I believe our society has made significant progress, but we still have great strides to make.

The love a family can provide to someone suffering from OCD or any mental illness can help immensely. This book is aimed primarily at those who are in pain, their families, and professionals serving this population as well.

I am trying to tell a good story but at the same time,

provide comfort as well. I have been touched by the outpouring of support from therapists who specialize in OCD treatment. One such local psychotherapist said “Evan’s writing style makes his book enjoyable and eye opening for people struggling with OCD, their family members and clinicians in mental health. Evan’s story can resonate with thousands of people suffering from OCD.” In the past, I have worked with a variety of families throughout New Jersey, forming and working with them in support groups. There is no magic pill, and this book is not going to solve all problems associated with the illness.

However, I sincerely hope it lends a compassionate and compelling voice to the mental health community.

At this point, I have started under the tutelage of Livingston Author and Entrepreneur Barry Farber to place my books in non-traditional settings. For example, I am in the process of seeking partnerships with cafes and restaurants to place my book by the register rather than having it get lost in a bookstore surrounded by thousands of other books. At these locations, I will be providing signed copies of the book along with brochures and other information about mental health.

To give back more to the community, a portion of these sales will go towards mental health groups fighting stigma.
