If you like the cuisine (okay, food), you know this is going to be good, because one peek at the posted menu reveals some options you may not be offered at other BBQ joints.

Smoked turkey sandwich? Pulled chicken?

“It (the turkey) is actually one of the food items that we have here that you actually have to have some salesmanship when you talk about it,” alludes Ken Ventre, American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ Brand Ambassador. “Most people hear turkey and they say, ‘It’s probably all dried out.’”

“That comes out a lot,” adds Hamilton Garces, pitmaster at the Wayne location, just a stone’s toss from William Paterson University. “Its not like Thanksgiving; it’s better than that. It’s flavorful.”

“Turkey is probably our lowest seller,” says Ventre, “but when the people order it, they can’t believe they waited that long.” He laughs, then continues. “It’s like, ‘Wow, this really is good!” He also sings the praises of the American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ wings. “The way that we do our wings, and especially recently we’ve tried to hone in on the preparation of it, to make sure you’re getting an even amount of rub on the entire wing…when these wings come out like that, the flavor in each order is well worth it. You’re maybe not going to fill up on ½ pound of wings, but it’s going to be delicious.”

The choices on the menu aren’t vast, but options per choices vary. For example, if you’re a brisket fan and prefer it in a taco or wrap instead of on a roll, request it. The American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ counter person is ready for your special order. Also, all sides are vegetarian friendly, and some are gluten-free as well.

That’s just part of the food side of American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ, which has three Garden State, prime real estate locations. Scotch Plains is located on busy Route 22, Randolph on Route 10 just about where it meets Route 46, and Wayne - which has the most seating capacity, 64 inside and 32 Hamilton Garces outside -- nearby many office buildings and WPU. “We offer the students the Pioneer card, we’re on that,” says Ventre. “It was very important for us to get on that, and the school is very into our mission and what we try to do as a company, so we’re on the Pioneer card and that’s a good thing.”

Also, a good, even a great and better component is the American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ support of veteran soldiers who have served our country.

Ventre, formerly in the Air Force and General Manager of the Randolph location, wears the pride of the eatery on his sleeve. “The company is about honoring heroes, serving great barbeque, and building something that can be remembered and special. We’re at the genesis of it right now, we’re not where we want to be, but I feel like we’re laying the groundwork.”

A bit of background. Ed Danberry and Ron DeLucia, business partners for over 20 years, are the founders. Danberry is a veteran, served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and he descends from a family of veterans who have defended our nation since the Revolutionary War. Their mission in 2017 was pointed: (from the website) as a way to expand their operations while providing jobs for Veterans. American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ actively seeks to hire combat veterans, honor local and historical heroes, all while supporting community activities.

That’s nice stuff, and so is this. “He,” says Ventre of Danberry, “more than any veteran-owned business I can think of, is more obsessed with the outreach and the working to remember the heroes and people who have sacrificed, not just vets, but firemen, police, EMTs, anybody who hopefully we can highlight and show and say, ‘Hey, this is somebody who has sacrificed.’”

In addition to the dedication to the heroes, growth is also a goal. “Any business,” adds Ventre, “is going to have its growing pains and learning curve, so we’re really focusing on our people and how we can best support them and get them to learn the systems that we’re doing and we’re receiving a lot of great feedback based on the changes we’ve made. It’s all about people – you can’t do anything without good people, and part of that is us reaching out to veterans, to people like Hamilton. He is a war veteran, served in Afghanistan, was injured in combat, he has a lot of great stories and actually embodies a lot of the spirit that we are trying to become.”

Garces is 28 and grew up in Paterson. He served four years as a Marine, and was deployed in Afghanistan, Jordan, and Japan. “For me it means having a good community here as a comrad-

ery, connecting with other service members throughout that day. It’s good, because when we’re out of the service, you kind of feel like a lone wolf, and being around other veterans is good.”

“At the end of the day, when you get out,” adds Ventre, regarding when service members exit and return home, “I don’t feel enough is done to offer a hand to vets or to help them find careers and work.” The ratio of military veteran diners to regular customers is specific to the eatery. “In our Scotch Plains location, I feel we get a lot of veterans that come in, and there it’s probably like 20%.”

“In this place,” says Garces of Wayne, “it’s probably like 20 or 30%. If they’re not straight veterans they’re first responders who did serve, and then you talk to them.”

Garces helps host at the Wayne location, and he recently was promoted to pitmaster, a critical chore food-wise. “So, I come in now and start taking temperatures on the meats, making sure that everything’s good – it’s a task and purpose.”

In Garces, Ventre sees “man of honor, a guy who has a lot of

integrity, he represents exactly what we’re looking for when it comes to – and forget the fact that he’s a veteran – just the way that he communicates with people and welcomes them, that’s exactly the kind of ambassador for this particular location that we’re looking for, and he embodies that on a daily basis.

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that would say anything negative about Hamilton. He comes to work, he does his job, and on top of that he believes in the mission, so it’s a win for everybody when you have someone like that on your crew.”

American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ features a variety of regional barbeque styles, and Ventre wants the Garden State to be a part of that. “I think that’s kind of what the idea is. We’re trying to formulate our own hybrid, our own kind of style, based upon different borrowing from cultures and regions that we feel do it the right way, the way that we want. Brisket – doing it the Texas style with the salt and pepper rub – the Carolina pork, doing the St. Louis style ribs. We fancy ourselves a company that likes to give the customer the very best, and when it comes to

Garces perhaps says it best. “If there’s anything I can say to every person who has ever served, that maybe not being a part of anything or asking what’s your purpose, I just simply say take it day by day, step by step and breath by breath, and trust God. Let go and let God. Just have faith that you’re still alive for a reason, and you have a heartbeat for a purpose.” the food, we actually pay top dollar for our meats because of that mission.” Meats are smoked from twelve hours prior to serving, sides prepared fresh. “Here in New Jersey, the customer base is very demanding, and we have to meet those demands.”

American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ also reaches out the community and gives back. It’s their prime focus in the neighborhood.

“We do lots of events around each of our stores. I participated in sponsoring a 5K to benefit the Semper Fi Fund; it was one of the most rewarding things I ever did,” says Ventre. “There were tons of kids there, people from the school (George Washington Middle School), and we have a relationship with that school, doing events to help them out. For me, we can give them quality food, but unless we become integrated into what the community is and what they are looking for, it wont work. So that’s what we aim to do.”

American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ also is involved in many charitable endeavors, and one is Adopt a Unit. Hosted by the American Red Cross, collection bins are located in all New Jersey locations. Customers can bring in supplies that can be sent to New Jersey troops that just got deployed overseas. When the campaign ends on March 8th, American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ employees will go and pack up the care packages for shipment.

Also, when customers visit, there is stationery on the counter that they can use to write special notes to servicemen overseas. Finally, the company is actively raising money for a service dog named Jocko, and Danberry and DeLucia have a 501(c)3 called Civic Duty Partners, which has partnered with Rebuilding Warriors, another nonprofit, where the folks are actually training the dogs and helping raise the funds. At the register, customers can donate, and the dogs are going to veterans who are not able to get a service dog via the Veterans Administration.

If you are a veteran, stop in to an American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ and tell them you’re available. They are hiring. “If you are a veteran, you have an absolute chance for employment here,” says Ventre. “You have priority if you meet the qualifications.” American Heroes Smokehouse BBQ also has plenty of opportunity for advancement, promoting from within.

Helping the Displaced Homemaker Achieve Self-Sufficiency

ost local area residents traveling on Hamburg Turnpike near Valley Road can’t help but notice the old, historic, little white school house proudly standing out amongst the surrounding businesses. What was once the Upper Preakness School is now the not-for-profit agency, Wayne Counseling and Family Services. Dedicated to serving individuals, families, businesses and other organizations in Northern New Jersey, Wayne Counseling and Family Services offers a variety of outpatient counseling services, educational and prevention programs.

One of their most prominent programs is Women in Transition.

For over two decades, this program has maintained its vision to meet the needs of displaced homemakers in Passaic County by providing free vocational training classes and support services to all women needing to re-enter or make an initial entrance into the work force.

Displaced homemakers are women who have lost their primary source of income due to issues of domestic violence, separation or divorce, as well as death or disability of a spouse or partner. Since their primary job was homemaking or caring for their families, these women must now transition from home to the workplace to provide the needed financial support for themselves and their families. They represent homemakers from all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Since its inception, this grassroots program has been run by Kate Mcateer, who continues to oversee all aspects of the services offered. Back in 1977, Kate was a displaced homemaker herself when she applied for the position of Program Coordinator. Once accepted, she then asked herself “What did I need?” Kate focused on the women who were right there in front of her and assessed their needs. While she doesn’t provide training herself or teach any of the classes, Kate instead endeavors to create options by advising with and developing an individualized roadmap for every client she meets.

Kate shared, “The program started with a grant and the initial classes offered were in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.” Today, Women in Transition offers 15 displaced homemaker programs for their clients. “The women who come, get help to find work and hopefully earn an undergrad degree. The ultimate goal is self-sufficiency for these women.”

The services provided are practical and create value. “We offer vocational assessments, interview coaching, job search assistance and resume writing to all.” The needs of the women go beyond developing job-specific skill sets, as they are also dealing with the emotional upheaval and stress of abuse, death or divorce. Kate realizes this and explained, “We also developed and give workshops on self-esteem, assertive communication, empowerment, nutrition and wellness, and countless other topics which resonated with the needs of our clients.”

Ms. Mcateer agreed, adding, “We have had many successes which we gauge by the growth and journey towards self-sufficiency that women take.

Women in Transition focuses on three main areas in which classes are created and services offered. Work readiness is geared towards developing an employable skill set for the work force. In addition to the initial computer classes offered, there are now classes that include a pre-employment workshop series, interview techniques and coaching, resume and cover letter writing as well as job search assistance and a weekly job club.

Career Counseling helps women set goals and provides career planning services. They also offer assessments to identify the best interests and personality traits of their clients to help them focus on how to best prepare for a successful career. Lastly, they provide referrals and guidance for training and education.

The third area is just as important as the others, which is emotional support. Because displaced homemakers face sometimes seemingly insurmountable challenges, the staff at Women in Transition have created divorce support groups, assertive communication classes, self-esteem and confidence building groups to help their clients in their journey. Equally as valuable are the Family Law legal education and financial planning workshops that take place throughout the year.

The monthly bulletin for March has been sent out to all women on the mailing list. The theme is Standing Up For Yourself, with a calendar of events scheduled for women to choose enrollment in. There will be a 3-part series addressing March’s theme. It is challenge that is not uncommon among displaced homemakers.

Also scheduled are classes for Microsoft Word, as well as a Legal Workshop, which is funded in part by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. All are free, but pre-registration is required. The program has done so well that the agency now works with William Paterson University, offering short term certificate courses which provide certificates upon completion. This is a valuable asset for building a resume.

As a program which relies upon outside funding, measuring success is important. While clients finding and securing employment is one way to measure that success, it is not the only way.

Ms. Mcateer agreed, adding, “We have had many successes which we gauge by the growth and journey towards self-sufficiency that women take. For some it is brief, like the mother who became a regional director for a major statewide charity in a matter of months after coming to us; or much longer, as happened to the stay at home mom who struggled for several years through a devastating divorce from an alcoholic spouse to become a teacher. Our clients have gotten jobs in business offices, fashion, customer service, medical translation, schools, hospitals, banks and construction.

Some are in interim jobs as they build their resumes, and others find satisfying employment with livable salaries. All work hard and we are their support system.”

Women in Transition is considered a safe haven, providing every client who is enrolled in any program complete confidentiality.

compassion and respect are given, and trust is earned. “Many of the women have been or are still living in abusive situations. They need more than a job.” Kate realizes that she and her staff cannot meet all the needs. “Coming together in small groups and classes, our women form connections and find comradery with those experiencing similar challenges. They are each other’s greatest inspiration and motivators.”

Women in Transition is focused on serving women in Passaic County, but will not refuse anyone seeking help. Oftentimes, these clients continue with their connections to Kate and the staff even after their initial classes are complete. “Some women get jobs and leave while others return after time to further build their abilities to move on toward better employment. All are welcomed.”

Looking back, Ms. Mcateer reflected on what the program has provided. “Over the nearly 22 years in which Women in Transition has served displaced homemakers in Passaic County, we have witnessed over 1,000 divorces, aided with legal education and attorney led seminars, helped widows through grief and loss, supported women whose spouses were disabled and who often became their caregivers, comforted and offered advice. We also provided referrals to hundreds of women who may not have qualified for our free services to find help and direction elsewhere.”

When asked if there was a common theme that resonated from the clients who completed the Women in Transition program, Kate shared, “Over the years we have received many calls and letters from grateful clients, often years after attending the program, and they have a similar theme: that change takes time, healing takes time, support is critical, and nothing is impossible for

a determined, hard working person to achieve. Here is an excerpt from one of those letters: “It has been a long, difficult journey; however, my experiences have made me realize that I can do anything I put my mind to, it just took some time. I no longer feel sorry for myself and I realize that I am a strong person. You and your organization put me on this path and for that I will be forever grateful. I hope you realize that you helped changed my life for the better and now I’m also changing the world by being an educator. I can’t ever thank you enough for your guidance and helping me believe in myself. “ Women in Transition is not the only program being offered in the State. There are currently 15 Displaced Homemaker centers in 14 of New Jersey’s 21 counties, with approximately 750,000 displaced homemakers eligible for services. According to some statistics, New Jersey ranks 8th nationally in the number of displaced homemakers. The NJ Department of Children and Families is also now partnering with the NJ Department of Labor to provide training funds to individualize training for women. This is one way Women in Transition continues to develop and offer ongoing services to displaced homemakers. It is clear to see that Kate and her staff are making an impact in an area of society where the need is real, and solutions are now available. interest on up to $750,000 of the loan (down from $1 million for mortgages initiated before Dec. 15, 2017). If your original mortgage is above the threshold, a calculation will be done to determine the deductible amount of interest. You can’t simply deduct the full amount of interest being reported on your Form 1098.

Proceeds not used to buy a home add complexity. Proceeds from home equity debt that are not used to build, buy or substantially improve a qualified home are no longer tax-deductible. This includes mortgage or home equity proceeds used to pay for college expenses, debit consolidation or other purposes. Mortgage companies issuing these loans will still send you a Form 1098, but it’s up to you to prove how you use the funds during the current year and any prior year.

Mortgage points requires review of settlement statements. Points are paid as a way to obtain a lower interest rate.

Generally, points are deductible in the year they are paid, but they have more restrictions than mortgage interest. Points paid to refinance an existing mortgage, for example, may need to be deducted over the life of the loan. If you bought or refinanced a home in 2018, a review of your mortgage settlement statement may be required to ensure proper tax treatment of the cost of your points.

Mortgage insurance premiums are not deductible. Congress did not extend the mortgage insurance premium deduction for

2018. If you pay mortgage insurance, don’t wait to file your taxes thinking Congress will change their minds. File your taxes on a timely basis and expect to feel the impact of this eliminated deduction.

With these changes, properly calculating 2018 mortgage deductions is more complicated. For each Form 1098 you receive, make a note on the form to explain what the loan is for to ensure a proper deduction.

Coping with the Loss of a Pet

T

he strong bonds many people share with their pets can make the death of those pets, be it sudden or expected, difficult to handle. It’s not uncommon to be traumatized when a pet dies, and such grief may be influenced by the pet’s age at the time of its death, the circumstances surrounding that death and the nature of the relationship between the owner and pet.

Different pet owners deal with the death of a pet in different ways, but the following are some ways to cope with the loss of a companion animal.

Recognize that everyone feels differently. Grief is expressed in many different ways. What one person experiences may not be the norm for another. You may go through a variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your pet, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong the animal’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same opportunity.

a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and pet loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly.

Create mementos or a legacy for the pet. Creating mementos may help children who are having their own difficulty dealing with pet loss. Work with your child to create a photo album or plant a tree to honor your pet.

Dealing with a pet that must be euthanized can be especially difficult. Pet owners can choose to be in the room during the procedure, and that decision should not be made

lightly. If you think you can handle it and you want to be there to comfort your pet, then you might be more comfortable being in the room. But being present when a pet is euthanized can be emotional, so give this decision serious consideration.

Once a pet has died, many owners debate whether or not to bring a new pet into their homes.

Another animal around the house can fill the void created when your previous pet passed away, and some people adopt or buy a new pet before an old or sick pet passes away to make the transition as smooth as possible. A new pet should only be brought into the home when you’re ready to build a new relationship.

A Community Within A Community: Shomrei Torah

By Pamela Macek estled within the township of Wayne, residents will find the Jewish house of worship, Shomrei Torah - the Wayne Conservative Congregation.

Founded in 1973, Shomrei Torah began holding services in a one room building.

Their steady growth has taken them into their present facility, which includes a beautiful, jewel-like sanctuary. This local synagogue is dedicated to serving its members through spiritual instruction, community service and fostering a kindred connection.

Since 1995, Rabbi Randall Mark has been the spiritual leader of Shomrei Torah. He works alongside a President, Officers, Trustees and support staff daily, so that the needs of the congregation can faithfully be met. Rabbi Mark spoke about the history behind the Jewish Conservative movement, his perspective on the current state of “the Jewish world,” Shom-

rei Torah’s mission and vision statements, as well as some of the ways the synagogue impacts their Jewish family and those in need here in Wayne and in Israel.

there are various denominations. Most commonly known are three mainstream forms of Judaism: Orthodox, Reform and Conservative. Rabbi Mark explained, “Orthodox Judaism is not so concerned with what everyone else is doing and most steadfast to their own beliefs, while Reform Judaism is much more aligned with the lifestyle of many American Jews.”

Shomrei Torah is Conservative – meaning middle of the road. Rabbi Mark continued, “Our motto here is Tradition and Change. We contemplate change in a slow and thoughtful process. Today we are part of a pluralistic society – live and let live, but still influenced by what goes on around us. Change is inevitable, but we endeavor to hold on to core beliefs that are non-negotiable.”

When asked about the history of Conservative Judaism, Rabbi Mark went on to explain, “Post WWII, Conservative Judaism was the fastest growing denomination of the three branches of the Jewish faith within the American movements. Yet during the

21st century we are getting smaller. We live in a time and place that tends to go to the extremes. Middle ground is no longer accepted, and compromise is seen as a weakness as opposed to it being a goal.”

Rabbi Mark believes that today’s society is very mobile and transitory. With that understanding, the leaders of Shomrei Torah try to create a sense of grounding for their members. Their number one mission is to develop community through the implementation of numerous programs and religious endeavors.

“We come together daily every morning to pray – an act called a minyan, and to study Torah, as well as perform acts of social activism and social justice.” Tikkun olam, which in Hebrew literally means, “repair of the world” is a Jewish concept relating to the responsibility the Jewish people have for not only themselves, but their fellow man to live a lifestyle that creates the highest moral, spiritual and best material welfare possible for all society.

The synagogue hosts multiple youth programs for their children, starting with Chaverim, which means “friends” in Hebrew. is alive and well. Rabbi Mark shared, “When a family or individual experience a death, we visit them and provide meals. If the elderly need assistance, such as a ride, we provide transportation for doctor appointments and shopping, or we will also just stop in to check on them.”

The members of Shomrei Torah embrace and act upon the philosophy of tikkun olam outside their religious community in a variety of ways. They network with organizations such as the Wayne YMCA and the Jewish Federation of Housing. On a local level, the members collect food and non-perishables, then donate them to the Wayne Interfaith Network. The Temple also holds events such as a baby clothing drive or school supply collection. These items are then donated to poor communities both here and overseas in Israel.

The synagogue also has a project called “Operation Isaiah.” It is considered a mitzvah – a good deed done from religious duty.

Shomrei Torah’s website explains Operation Isaiah like this: “Beginning on Rosh Hashanah, grocery bags and lists of requested items will be available in the lobby of the synagogue.

Families are asked to take one home, go to the supermarket and bring back at least one bag with the suggested personal care, cleaning or paper products on or before returning to the synagogue for the Kol Nidre service. These items will be donated to the Wayne Interfaith Network (WIN), a volunteer, non-profit, tax exempt organization that operates a food and basic necessities pantry here in Wayne. WIN distributes to our own community, our neighbors. The WIN volunteers come from churches, synagogues and other organizations throughout Wayne.”

During the time of Hurricane Sandy, the members at Shomrei Torah worked together to support folks in the community needing aid. This was through gracious acts like charging phones, providing coffee and ongoing support on many levels. This “tikkun olam,” is much like a community within a community in action.

When asked what was most fulfilling to him in his position as spiritual leader, the Rabbi replied, “The life cycle events.” This would be celebrations such as bar and bat mitzvahs or weddings, or even tragedies with illness or death. “If there is a funeral for a member of our congregation, it is common for our members to show support to the grieving family by bringing food to the home and sitting shiva with them. One builds community by being together for the crisis as well as for the time of celebration.”

When asked what was most challenging for Rabbi Mark within the congregation, he said, “Maintaining a connection with our

youth after their bar and bat mitzvah is definitely a concern.” As part of the solution, the synagogue offers a vibrant Youth Group Program, which the Rabbi described as, “a microcosm of synagogue life.” Tuesday evenings, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., the Temple offers, “Hebrew High School” for 8th – 12th grade youth. They also provide a youth group called USY – United Synagogue Youth, which offers fun, social activities, including regional dances and conventions. The USY of Shomrei Torah is one chapter of the Hagalil Region of USY, which is comprised of 40 chapters across the state.

Since these children generally attend different public schools, this program is designed to help initiate and foster friendships through fun activities such as trips to the zoo, ice skating, and apple picking.

PreKadima is for 3rd and 4th graders. They meet once a month on Saturday nights, or additionally during the week, either at the synagogue or elsewhere. While developing friendships, the focus is on beginning to develop a strong Jewish identity among these youth.

Meeting at the same time as PreKadima, only for 5th thru 7th grade students, is Kadima – which means “forward” in Hebrew. A greater understanding for Judaism and Zionism is introduced in these programs as well as tikkun olam, which is fostered through hands on activities such as baking cookies for the American Red Cross blood drive and the local police department. Fun and education are finely interwoven and embraced by the pre-teens in Kadima.

Lastly, the synagogue has created a group called Koach College Outreach Program. Koach means “strength.” For a nominal fee, students living away from home will receive goodie packages for their “heart, soul and tummy” five times during the school year. This outreach program is to help ensure the connection between the college bound student and the Shomrei Torah community remains strong even after the student has left for college.

It is clear to see how strong the commitment is that the Shomrei Torah faculty has towards its youth. There are even special religious services geared towards different age groups as well as events that include outreach to non-members. Friday evenings hold a new service called Shabbat B’Yachad – which means “Sabbath together.” Friends and family gather together to enjoy music, prayer and refreshments in a more casual atmosphere

than some of the other religious services held. When asked why refreshments are often served at various services, Rabbi Mark explained that, “Prayer, study and eating are always intertwined.”

The Jewish calendar has its own holidays, and the Shomrei Torah Congregation is always ready to welcome young and old, member or visitor, to join in and celebrate together. Every week on Friday at sundown, there are services for the Sabbath – or Shabbat. Additionally, there are holidays that are observed once a year. The main holidays are: Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement, Sukkot – the Feast of Booths, Simchat Torah – Celebration of the conclusion of the annual, full cycle Torah reading , Chanukah – the Festival of Lights, Tu B’Shevat – the New Year of the Trees, Purim – the Festival of Lots, Passover – the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt, and Shavout – the Feast of Weeks.

Shomrei Torah also has a variety of clubs established. This creates opportunities for smaller groups to develop, as well as healthy, one-on-one friendships to develop. Whether the need is spiritual, educational or social, there is sure to be a club active for any interested member. The Men’s club has a yearly membership, with participants engaged in numerous fun activities which include fund raising, sponsoring an annual blood drive, weekly morning nature walks and even two poker nights.

The Sisterhood, as you can tell, is a club for adult women in the congregation. They seek to strengthen bonds of friendship through service and their support of the Religious School, as well as increase an enhanced participation in Jewish life and the perpetuation of Judaism. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as sponsoring Sukkot and Shavuot luncheons, participating in a Walk-a-thon for Breast Cancer, supplying food, cake and candy for holidays and providing gifts for Bar/Bat Mitvahs. There are many more opportunities to get involved, and the Shomrei Torah’s website provides this information.

The Origins of the Leprechaun Myth

he tricolor flag. A pint of Guinness. Bagpipes. Each of these things are symbols of St. Patrick’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of Ireland every year on March 17.

While each of the aforementioned symbols is tangible, one popular image has proven a little more elusive. Leprechaun imagery is ubiquitous during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, but even the most ardent Paddy’s Day revelers may know little about these mythical creatures.

Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

gins in ancient Ireland, when people believed the tiny creatures were among the various inhabitants of fairy forts and fairy rings throughout the Emerald Isle.

Another take on the source of the leprechaun myth is that these tiny creatures were modern incarnations of the Euro-Celtic god Lugh, who was the sun god as well as the patron of arts and crafts.

Manuscripts from the 12th to 15th centuries suggest leprechauns lived underwater and were not all male (modern leprechaun depictions are all male). In fact, the resource Ancient-Origins. net states that female leprechauns were depicted during this time as figures devoted to luring human men away for various adventures.

While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red.

The images of leprechauns can be seen everywhere on and around St. Patrick’s Day, and those images have evolved considerably over the centuries.

By Jillian Risberg er son was born with autism and is developmentally disabled. That explains Lucy “Aileen” Rivera’s tireless advocacy on behalf of those with special needs — for the councilwoman, it’s personal.

Rivera says it all started in 2009 when she learned her son Daniel, 33, was severely beaten by a staffer at the staterun North Jersey Developmental Center in Totowa. The facility has since been shut down by former Gov. Chris Christie.

“That birthed a new me and from that point on I started advocating and lobbying for change in the system,” Rivera says, referring to her fight to persuade New Jersey legislators on both sides of the aisle and high-ranking state officials to protect this vulnerable population.

“Which I did accomplish but can’t say I did all myself,” she says. “It’s my team — in the beginning it was Martha Cray (whose son William died in a group home) and me.”

They later joined forces with Tom Komninos and successfully championed the ‘Stephen Komninos’ Law,’ signed by Christie on Oct. 6, 2017.

And she went from town to town asking municipalities to support a resolution of the law and took it all the way to Trenton. It’s being enforced and implemented by the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS) as of May 2018.

The bill was named for Stephen Komninos, a 22-year-old man with intellectual disabilities who choked to death in 2007 when his caregiver left him unattended against doctor’s orders at a residential facility.

“So every caregiver in the state of New Jersey and every agency in the state that takes care of people with developmental disabilities and special needs has to abide by the law,” Rivera says.

“She has shown so much perseverance and heart in everything she does for people with developmental disabilities,” says Adler, of Wayne. “I have great admiration for her courage.”

about the law, she mentioned to Cray and Komninos how she would love to get more involved in her community, but was thinking along the lines of volunteering.

“And that’s when they said to me, would you consider running for councilwoman,” a shocked Rivera told them she didn’t know anything about politics.

But she has been a law firm office manager (her day job) for the past 29 years, which has given the councilwoman the foresight and experience to help people overcome great obstacles, so it wasn’t a complete stretch.

“I decided to run because I’ve always been passionate about helping people,” the councilwoman says. “I thought it was a great chance for me to advocate for the residents in my town.”

And that loyalty isn’t lost on Debbie Starr.

“Aileen has proven her dedication with her ‘people first’ attitude, hard work and persistence,” the purchasing director says, adding that Rivera is a motivator and true leader for the

According to the councilwoman, she knocked on more than 2,000 doors and took her post in 2016.

“They believed in me and voted for me,” Rivera says. “My platform was cut taxes, protect open space, help attract new businesses and revitalize the Fifth Ward shopping and commercial centers.”

She is a hands-on champion of the residents, supporting ordinances and resolutions that enhance the quality of life in the township from major projects and infrastructure improvements (ranging from community growth to land use) to finances and strategic planning.

And she is committed to working with the members of the Wayne Town Council to hold-the-line on property taxes and is opposed to re-zoning Wayne, but is all about supporting those who currently set up shop across the township’s 25 miles and attracting new businesses.

“We have the Wayne Hills Mall that’s now being redeveloped, with a ShopRite and retail stores,” Rivera says. “I’m in favor of the businesses because it’s a positive ratable and creates jobs.”

During her tenure as a councilwoman she gave proclamations for Law Enforcement Appreciation, Developmental Disability

Awareness, Autism Awareness, Prematurity Awareness, small businesses, Coaches/Special Olympics, Foundation for the Handicapped, Special Needs Citizens and a teacher.

According to Tama DeBoer, Rivera’s work as a councilwoman exemplifies her commitment to the residents of Wayne.

Located in the heart of Passaic County, the township is less than 20 miles from midtown Manhattan and with a population of 55,000 it has that small town charm that many crave, along with big city amenities.

From vital shopping districts and business centers to a bustling real estate market, lake communities loaded with recreational facilities and museums, the modern free public library, exceptional public school system and William Paterson University, Rivera is a proud Wayne resident who loves her community and is looking forward to enhancing her hometown and all it has to offer.

“When she recognized a speeding issue on Knox Terrace, she implemented speed signs to remind residents of the speed restriction on that street,” says DeBoer, a Verizon business manager. “Aileen (also) put together a team to paint fire hydrants in town to help with their visibility for firefighters and save taxpayers money.”

And Rivera has issued various firefighter and police proclamations for their endless efforts.

“Aileen has made Wayne a better place for its residents,” DeBoer says.

The councilwoman truly cares about the township and representing its people. For those who have questions or comments, Rivera says they should reach out directly by calling her extension or shoot her an email and she will gladly respond.

“I want to do more for our town, better for our town,” Rivera says. “And it’s important that people be involved and come to the council meetings because they see what’s going on and how their representatives are committed to them.”

She’s also always there for the seniors. When they needed a bigger bus with a wider aisle, Rivera made that happen.

The councilwoman says she is enjoying every moment of the journey.

“Because I am able to address the needs and concerns of my constituents,” Rivera says. “I am committed to be a voice for them.”

Rivera is using that voice all over. She currently serves as a council liaison for the Local Assistance Board and previously held the same position for the Wayne Public Library, Environmental Commission and Economic Development Commission.

And the councilwoman shares her energy and expertise with the people by serving as the Valley Terrace Condo Association Treasurer and representing various local organizations, including the Wayne PAL. The lessons learned as an advocate and as a mother

“I am currently working on another law with Martha, we’re pushing for surveillance cameras in these group homes,” the councilwoman says. “We just got the draft from a legislator. They don’t want us to release it yet until we meet with them.”

As for how Daniel is doing today, the councilwoman says the Self-Directed Employee (SDE) option is helping.

“He’s in his own apartment and his funding followed him. I hire who’s going to work for my son and the state pays them,” Rivera says. “It would be nice if more fami-

lies would be able to do it. It’s a lot of work, but for me — it’s worth it because I’m like the management of his house. So I make sure that people are doing their job; helping my son to learn life skills, with the cleaning, the laundry, food shopping, etc.”

Maybe it all happened for a reason how Rivera fell into politics because of Daniel and everything he’s endured and this is what she was meant to do, she found her purpose.

“We’re at a different place in life and I am so thankful for where we’re at and this is why I want to continue being a councilwoman, being an advocate for my town, my residents,” Rivera says. “I’m paying it forward with good deeds.”

At the end of the day, she also wants to keep bringing awareness to the plight of those with autism and developmental disabilities, so that people can really grasp what it means.

Because there’s still such a stigma, and pervasive intolerance — it doesn’t make it easy for someone with the disorder and all who love them.

“They want to be accepted like everybody else,” Rivera says. “Please be understanding and patient with them. You have to understand their language and how they perceive things and they can understand you.”

In January 2019, William Paterson University and the City of Paterson announced the launch of Propel Paterson, a new partnership designed to support Paterson’s revitalization through learning, research, and action. The goal is for the University and the city of Paterson to work collaboratively to transform faculty research into opportunities for economic and workforce development, educational growth and community action. The focus realms are healthcare, education, business, social services, and arts, culture and tourism.

Sayegh adds, “The conference was a great jumping off point, and we look forward to ways that we can bring the research and academic community of WPU into the daily life of the city – through conversations around economic development, the future of work and play, education, and so much more. We look forward to the next opportunity to partner and develop this collaboration further and think that suggestions from the break-out sessions at the end of the conference will serve as our next steps. increased our overall performance based on the metrics they look at.”

As a retired Army Major, the recognition means even more to Dennis.

“Everyone knows who U.S. News and World Report is. So, as a veteran, if I’m looking at colleges I want to attend, that’s going to be a part of my evaluation criteria.”

The OMVA was formed in 2009. The post-9/11 GI Bill was passed, and for the first time since World War II, there was a large influx of veterans returning from overseas that started attending college. “When that happened,” says Dennis, “ a lot of schools really weren’t prepared for it.” Recognized were needs for veterans returning home that are unique: adult learners whose lifetime experiences were different. “There are a lot of studies that show different things you can do to provide the best environment for them. So, that’s what many of the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs has done, look at how we can enrich and improve the experience for the students that are here.”

Berkeley College has seven campuses where 450 veterans in the system attend classes, and they can do so either online or at the physical school itself. Berkeley also has a Virtual Veterans Resource Center set up on its website that students can access a variety of resources.

Gabrielle Peralta joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. “The reason I joined was because my grandpa served in the Army during World War II.” Peralta researched other colleges before picking Berkeley, finding Veterans Affairs representatives were not in their office and one didn’t have a veteran’s affairs representative on campus. When she visited Berkeley to apply, Tami Pichardo, Veterans Affairs representative at the Woodland Park campus, was present, explaining to Peralta what she needed to do to attend the institution. Peralta was sold on the worth of Berkeley College, and a special friend aided her decision. “Also, having Skyla the therapy dog in the office also sealed the deal for me coming to Berkeley. My relationship with Skyla - I’m her best friend. She helps me with the PTSD that I have, and in return I play and walk her when she needs it.”

“Also” she adds, “the veteran representative is always available to help you with any questions.”

Peralta, working towards a degree in Business Administration – Management, is also President of the Woodland Park Spartans, the New Jersey Veteran’s club at the school. “The purpose of our club is to give the veterans at Berkeley an outlet, and everyone in the club knows what you have gone through and understand what you are talking about. Also, it helps veterans transition from military life to college life.”

Dennis values his work with the OMVA and his relationship with the students. “I find it personally rewarding to be able to go back and help veterans go to school. A little under 90% of servicemen are first generation in their family to go to college. So, they can’t call home and ask, ‘What’s a bursar?’ or ‘What’s a registrar?’, which are words you don’t hear anywhere else in the world. It’s kind of confusing to navigate through, so I help bridge that gap, because I myself am a first generation in my family to go to college. So, it’s nice to inspire them, to let them know they can achieve more than they thought they could.”

Dennis every semester also writes a letter to every student who scores a 4.0 GPA. “I write them a letter and I give them a little gift.”

He then adds with a smile, “I had to write 68 of them last semester.”

Josephine Cornacchia, who served 5 years in the United States Air Force, began attending Berkeley College during the winter 2017 semester. She is also seeking a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Management and serves as Vice President of the Woodland Park Spartans. Cornacchia has a certificate in Culinary Arts from Eva’s Kitchen in Paterson, and her instructor in that realm was also a veteran who attended Berkeley and sang its praises as a veteran-friendly school. “I actually live in Woodland Park, so it’s very convenient and it worked out.” Her plans are to combine her culinary talents with her eventual business degree and forge a nice future.

Of the OMVA, Cornacchia says, “I go there often. I ask questions, get information, and they’re very helpful. Berkeley College works very well with veterans. I think it’s good to have veterans in a school setting; I think we add something to the classroom with our experiences.”

The Woodland Park Spartans are a new club, and they believe in giving back. “We are just kind of learning as we go,” says Cornacchia. “Last semester we did a fundraiser with Saint Joseph’s (University Medical Center in Paterson), we got a bunch of toys and donated them to the Hematology and Oncology units at Saint Joseph’s for Christmas for all the kids. We like to do drives and help people. So, we also want to be there for veterans, because a lot of veterans have different issues and they feel comfortable talking with someone in the same situations as they were.”

Dennis elaborates on how the OMVA benefits veteran students in a few ways. “The Department of Education, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, three different departments of the government– rules conflict, it’s confusing, so we kind of help them (veterans) nav-

igate through that. They may fall under all three with their benefits if they’re actively serving, have their GI Bill, and are going to college. We help them understand their benefits, just give them the information to make an informed choice on how to best use their benefits.

So, that’s very important. Another piece that comes out, that goes way beyond the educational piece, is – and I have this conversation with a lot of veterans – maybe they’re having an issue with their pay. So that creates problems for them because most of them have families, and most of them have to feed their families and house their families, and the money they were expecting to come in for their budget doesn’t come in. We guide them to resources in the community and help them out.”

“In talking to veterans regularly and getting to know them, you can tell if something’s not right for somebody.

Sometimes I, or one of the staff, will pull them aside and ask, ‘Are you alright?’ All of the sudden they’ll open up. We’ll ask them, ‘Do you know about this resource?’ or make a phone call with them there and put them in touch with the right person to eliminate some of those barriers so they can focus on what they’re ultimate goal is, to graduate from college, get the career that they want, and provide better for their families.”

A special Veterans Graduation Gala will be held on March 28 at the Chart House in Weehawken to honor the hard-working folks who served and studied. “It’s not the graduation ceremony,” says Dennis, “but it’s to highlight them in an environment where it’s for the veterans.”

The big goal for Dennis and OMVA is to change the veteran cultural mindset. “One little thing,” he said. “When things start to go wrong, reach out to other veterans or reach out for help. Don’t put your head down and drive harder forward. If it’s not working, reach out to us. Refacing vs. Refinishing Your Kitchen Cabinets

by Natalie Marsella ew and current homeowners alike are always looking for ways to update their home, especially their kitchen. While doing a complete overhaul can be quite expensive, there are other ways to achieve the look, one being refinishing your cabinets. Changing the look of your cabinets can give this active space in your home a whole new feel.

While the most expensive option if refacing your cabinets (changing out hardware and all the doors and cabinets with new ones or applying a laminate), the most effective option is refinishing. This can be achieved by either painting or staining the fronts and either

cleaning and installing the previous hardware or upgrading. This option also offers your best return on investment.

Just as the painted wood work and doors in your home need periodic painting, so the kitchen cabinets will also need maintenance. An advantage to painted cabinets is that any nicks or worn areas can easily be touched-up, thereby extending the life of the paint job.

Cabinets in colors can be very exciting in the kitchen: in postal blue, light pastels, whisper gray and sunny yellow can all create surprising results. Decorating magazines often show cabinets in spruce green, Navy blue and weathered or faux finishes. Typically, we tend to see homeowners keeping with a clean white finish or a modern

Packanack Community Church To Hold Benefit Baked Ziti Luncheon

ackanack Community Church will be holding a benefit baked ziti lunch and sale on Sunday, March 10 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit church mission programs and the Father English Center in Paterson—a multi service community center that provides food and meals and other services to thousands of needy children and families monthly.

The eat-in Ziti lunch, which will be held in the church’s Simmons Hall, is $10 per person, with children under 10 served for free. “Heat and eat” takeout orders are $10 per medium pan (serving-2-3) or $25 for a larger pan (servings-4-6) and can be placed in advance.
