By Steve Sears my Lewin knows how her “friend,” her DJI Mavic Air 2 Aerial drone, feels. “One of my birthday gifts,” she says, “was a helicopter ride in New York City, and it was with the doors off. I was strapped in, and my camera was strapped in, and I was a drone in the sky. The whole time. I just kept envisioning this is what it feels like to be my drone up there. I became a drone!” she says ecstatically. Lewin received her Part 107 FAA license in October 2020. “This is fairly new for me. One of the advantages of drone photography is I enjoy having, I love having, a bird’s eye view. I’ve had my fair share of climbing up on nine-foot ladders to take pictures.” It’s the best of all worlds. “Now – legally, when there’s no restrictions - I can fly up to 400 feet, and see down below. You know, when you angle the camera straight down and you’re seeing what’s down there, it’s incredible, but then when you don’t angle the camera below, and you’re going straight across to the horizon, it’s also incredible. So, there’s definitely an advantage of drone photography versus traditional photography.” A camera is mounted at the front of Lewin’s drone, and she has ability to adjust the camera up and down and move the drone from side to side. When I was in high school - it may have been my sophomore junior year, I’m not sure - I took a photography class, and fell in love.” Torn between both interests, she still applied to FIT, but pursued her photographic interests, combining both. Runway models and more were captured within her lenses, and it solidified her love for photography. She then attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, at that time the top-rated photography school in the country. Lewin’s photography

TINA CALI REALTOR career actually runs parallel with her event planning job, where she helps plan both corporate and social events. “It was the owner of the company that introduced me to drone photography. He has a drone. I was hooked and I admired it, and it was then that it was always planted in my head that I need to do this.” Ironically enough, then Covid19 happened, and the event planning business took a sojourn. “I was a little lost,” says Lewin. Drone
to the rescue. “It was the drone photography; buying a drone just excited me. I started flying in July.” Unable to get together with people, her drone became a good, reliable friend. She has her favorites. One of Lewin’s photos is of an older, decommissioned shoal lighthouse in Raritan Bay. No longer in use, a shore bird now calls it home, it nesting and caring for its young on the beacon. “That entire one is really one of continued on page 8
