NCJW/Essex Center for Women Supports Women During the Pandemic: One Woman’s Journey

verwhelmed” is the word Lisa Purvis of Scotch Plains used to describe how she felt upon entering the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women for the first time. She was having a crisis in the middle of a crisis. While mourning the death of their son, her husband had faced a series of health issues, lost his job, and Purvis found herself needing to return to work after a 20-year absence. “We were experiencing financial difficulties in the midst of several other personal family hardships,” explained Purvis, “and I had no idea what direction to take until a friend told me about how much the NCJW/Essex Center for Women had helped her.”

That was just the beginning of a life changing decision. At the Center for Women, Purvis found the help she needed through their many programs including Career Services, Computer Classes such as LinkedIn, Outlook, Excel and WORD, Career Closet, and multiple Job Club workshops. “The Center for Women provides services to all women experiencing challenging times in their lives,” she explained. “They have been a beacon for me, and I am grateful to have them in my life.” Although Purvis began her journey with the Center before the COVID-19 crisis started, services continued to be provided to her remotely throughout the duration of the quarantine.

Women who come to the NCJW/Essex Center for Women often lack the skills or confidence to seek employment or have the skills but may not be sure how to apply them. Through the guidance of the Center, Purvis gained the confidence and support needed to build her

self-esteem. She not only found help in preparing for a career path, but also received the tools to build strength from within. «Every staff person demonstrated true compassion, kindness, and concern,» Purvis stated. As a client of the Center for Women, Purvis worked one-on-one with Barbara Sunberg, Career Services Manager, to explore different career opportunities that best matched her experience and skills. “There is unlimited potential in what the Center can help with,” stated Sunberg, “and it gives us great joy to see our clients moving forward with assurance, hope and ultimately success.” By giving emotional support along with job search strategies, clients are able to reach their full potential. “Everyone encouraged me to believe in myself and my strengths,” Purvis said.

Give Individuals and Small Businesses a Government-Backed Line of Credit

The economy is reopening. Consumer spending increased by almost 18% last month, sending the stock market soaring. That’s the good news. The bad news is that with no COVID-19 vaccine or cure on the horizon, consumers have not fully resumed their prepandemic activities, and they might not do so for quite a while. There are no silver bullets to help everyone weather this storm.

There is, however, a policy that could help the economy -- businesses and individuals alike -- in a fiscally responsible manner.

That policy is to extend a low-interest rate, government-backed line of credit to everyone with a checking account.

This idea was first designed and introduced by economist Arnold Kling as a much better alternative to the Payroll Protection Program, or the PPP. He and I wrote a policy brief for the Mercatus Center explaining the details of the proposal, which are quite straightforward. Take the amount of prepandemic income that went into every checking account in the country for the months of January and February 2020, and use that amount to determine each business’s and person’s available line of credit. Implementing this policy requires only that banks write a few lines of computer code.

The beauty of this idea is that the funds go to individuals and businesses without any restrictive terms on what they can use the credit for. This detail is important because it makes implementation simple and flexible, and it eliminates the need for bureaucratic oversight or long and tedious application processes.

It also addresses a problem ignored by other plans to help small businesses: It’s easily accessible to sole proprietors -- a group that includes freelanc-

Mark Shields ers, contractors and other artisans, who represent 81% of all small businesses in America. These sole proprietor firms don’t exist as businesses in the eyes of the federal government, which makes it very difficult for them to access programs like the PPP. Extending a line of credit to every individual is key because if everyone pays their bills, it helps the businesses who have issued the bills.

By now I’m sure some of you are wondering why I describe this plan as fiscally responsible. That’s because the loan is repayable. The interest rate is low, and people who choose to take this credit have several years to repay their debts. Having to repay the loan means that only those who can’t find better ways to come up with the liquidity they need will actually use it.

The plan also gives those who borrow the money total flexibility in terms of whether or when they access the funds. The plan’s design means the government does not dictate its conditions, such as requiring that the borrowing business keep their employees.

If keeping those employees is good for the business, it will do so, but if not, the business won’t be compelled to as a condition for getting the loan. continued on page 6 100% MailedNewspaper Flanders, NJ 07836

Newsflash: This is 2020, not 1920.

We live in a diversity-obsessed country where every major corporation from Amazon, AT&T, and Ben & Jerry’s to Lexus, Nike, Pepsi, and Ticketmaster, to Wendy’s, Yelp, and Zoom bends to Black Lives Matter. MAGA hats and “OK” hand gestures are hate symbols.

Every videotaped squabble in groceries, parks and streets between nonwhite and white people is a national human rights catastrophe. Baseball is no longer the national pastime.

Self-flagellation is.

It needs to be repeated because The Big Hoax still won’t die: Cops are not lurking on every corner waiting to strangle and murder minorities. Arsonists are not hiding in every bush plotting to burn down black churches. Racist kidnappers are not conspiring in every neighborhood to snatch black children from their beds. Hooded phantoms are not running around every downtown with ropes planning to string anyone from lampposts and trees.

Last week, I debunked the white supremacist lynching hoax. After my column was published, the family of one of the alleged black victims, Malcolm Harsch, admitted, after being shown surveillance video of him committing the act, that Malcolm had indeed sadly died of suicide. But no sooner had that social media-manufactured epidemic du jour died down than a new whiteon-black horror emerged: The Return

In Oakland, unhinged Mayor Libby Schaaf claimed that five “nooses” had been discovered wrapped around tree limbs in a city park. A “hate crimes” investigation was immediately launched.

It didn’t matter that a black Oakland resident, Victor Sengbe, immediately came forward to explain that the ropes were part of a larger swing system not to kill black people, but to promote exercise.

“Out of the dozen and hundreds and thousands of people that walked by, no one has thought that it looked anywhere close to a noose. Folks have used it for exercise. It was really a fun addition to the park that we tried to create,” Sengbe told KGO News. “It’s unfortunate that a genuine gesture of just wanting to have a good time got misinterpreted into something so heinous,” he told the station.

Mayor Schaaf and the hysteria harridans didn’t just make a mistake, however. They willfully and purposefully spread The Big Hoax despite Sengbe’s explanation because “(i)ntentions don’t matter when it comes to terrorizing the public,” she said.

And, of course, the taxpayers’ burden will be relatively small because most companies won’t use this line of credit -- and when they do, most will repay it, especially if it’s paired with strong incentives to repay.

Finally, under this system, representatives and senators trying to make a political point by requiring that aid to businesses be conditional on banks extending a certain share of the funds to certain populations will be neutralized. Under this plan, there’s no need to demand that farmers or Native American tribes get a certain share of the loans, because everyone has equal access to them.

If we decide to go down this route, which we should, other programs aimed at injecting liquidity to help firms and indi-

viduals should not be renewed when they expire or run out of money. That means no extension of PPP, no new individual checks sent out and no extension of the $600 per week unemployment insurance bonus. Aid under this line-of-credit proposal is versatile, and it creates all the right incentives to encourage businesses to reopen as they see fit in an economy that’s still shaken up by the lockdown and by consumers who demand to be protected from the virus in ways they didn’t need to be prepandemic.

The Oakland #FakeNoose ruse fell apart seven days ago, but no sooner had that fiasco ended than the NASCAR hoax erupted on Sunday. Racecar driver-turnedBlack Lives Matter mascot Bubba Wallace claimed a “noose” was discovered in his team garage. A literal virtue-signaling parade convened. Establishment conservatives such as Ben Shapiro, Scott Walker and Nikki Haley joined anti-American liberals in condemning “despicable” racism and declared that they “stand with Bubba.”

Wallace appeared on “The View” to say that anyone who questioned his self-serving narrative was a “simple-minded” bigot who “offends me.”

Turns out, thanks to citizen journalists’ sleuthing and observant pit crew workers, that the “noose” was a typical garage door pull rope present in the garage at least eight months before Wallace moved into it last week. It took a massive 15 FBI agents to figure out the obvious.

Not a single mainstream outlet bothered to recount, as I did on Twitter on Sunday night, the long history of #FakeNoose that I’ve exposed in my columns for the

past 13 years -- from the Baltimore firefighter in 2007 who faked a noose and death threat to distract from a cheating scandal to the University of Delaware agitators who whipped up a frenzy in 2015 over “nooses” that turned out to be metal “remnants of paper lanterns” hung as tree decorations to the Kansas State University grievance-mongers who turned discarded nylon parachute cords used for knot-tying practice into terroristic “nooses” to the shoelaces mistaken for nooses at Michigan State University in 2017.

I’ll say it again: When you’ve seen one social justice huckster, you’ve seen ‘em all. Remember who calls out the horse manure when it matters. Remember who cringes and whinges. Stop buying into The Big Hoax. Have some self-respect, for heavens’ sake. America is falling apart over lies.

Registration Now Open For Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop For Summer 2020 Special Online Session

entenary Stage Company is now accepting registration for their Young Performers Workshop summer 2020 session.

Centenary Stage Company’s critically acclaimed Young Performers Workshop is now seeking new and returning applicants for the 2020 Spring Session. This session, a special 5-week online program runs July 13 through August 16 and will culminate with a week of online cabaret performances. Due to the social distancing, health and safety regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will now be held online and will include a variety of classes in the performing arts including: private voice lessons, stage and special effect makeup, playwriting, monologue workshops, theatre box office, and various dance classes.

Tuition for the program starts at $595 per student, with family discounts available for additional children from the same household, and the registration deadline is July 10.

Hailed as “a state treasure” the Centenary Stage Company Young Performers Workshop (YPW) is a musical theatre training program for children 8 - 18 years old and operates under the auspices of the Centenary Stage Company, a not-for-profit Equity Theatre Company in residence at Centenary University. Dedicated to the enrichment of young lives through the use of theatre arts, the Young Performers Workshop is one of a few youth theatre programs to offer both formal training along - side practical production experience. Career-minded students can prepare for the rigors of a professional career; yet, students not aiming for a professional career benefit from the program, with its emphasis on discipline, self-worth and development of communication skills.

Included in possible course options are private tap dance lessons from Michael Blevins, a Broadway, film and television veteran, who also serves as the director of the program. Various staff members of Centenary Stage Company and faculty of the University Theatre Department, who are experts in their field, will teach the many other courses as a part of the Summer 2020 session.

As in the past, this unique summer session has been designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced performers. The 5-week program will include 4 weeks of workshops and classes and 1 week of presentations online. These presentations will be performed as a “cabaret” online as the nature of the pandemic has affected the ability to host live performances, which is how the program has traditionally been completed.

The summer session will begin Monday, July 13 with cabaret “performances” scheduled for the week of August 9 - 16. Classes meet online via videoconference, by section, 5 days a week between the hours of 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Students selected to the program will rehearse individual projects with each course’s instructor culminating in the recorded performances for the online cabaret. Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Section First In New Jersey To Conform To Strict International Standards

T

he Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Section of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office is the first in New Jersey to welcome an independent assessment, which concluded the section meets rigorous international quality standards.

Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon in 2019 voluntarily sought the services of Highlands Forensic Investigations & Consulting LLC for an independent and objective assessment of the agency’s CSI Section that provides crime scene and incident evidence collection and analysis to all 39 municipalities in Morris County.

The yearlong evaluation involved an onsite visit by Highlands Owner Howard Ryan and firm Assessors Laura Tramontin and James P. Molinaro, and continuous reviews of case files, training files, proficiency/competency testing and management documentation.

In 2019, CSI Section Detectives and Forensic Technicians worked on 1,291 cases, or, between three and four cases a day.

Under the leadership of Morris County Sheriff’s Office Detective Captain Denise Thornton and Detective Lieutenant Laura Flynn, and with all CSI Detectives assisting, an extensive questionnaire about practices, policies and directives governing eight categories of CSI operations were responded to with 126 detailed and objective written proofs.

To mark the recent, successful completion of the assessment, Mr. Ryan and the assessors visited the CSI Section to present a Certificate of Conformity to the Sheriff and CSI Section Detectives. The certificate validates the completion of a Crime Scene Unit Assessment Program that demonstrates conformity to standards promulgated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 17020), relevant to best practices for crime scene investigations.

Assessor Molinaro is a retired New Jersey State Police

Lieutenant, who later worked for and retired from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office in the Major CrimesCrime Scene Unit. Assessor Tramontin has more than 20 years of crime laboratory experience and worked in multiple forensic disciplines that include drug chemistry, toxicology, trace evidence and biology.

Highlands owner, Mr. Ryan, is a retired New Jersey State Police Lieutenant and crime scene investigation and reconstruction expert. His firm provides consulting services across the United States and Canada.

“I can’t say how proud I am of everyone in the Crime Scene Investigation Section,” Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon said.

“This independent assessment by a forensic firm that draws upon experts with more than 130 years of combined law enforcement experience strengthens the excellence, professionalism and precision of work performed by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI Section. It demonstrates the objectivity of detectives, their adherence to written procedures, and will increase their confidence while explaining and defending their analyses where it counts – in courts of law,” Sheriff Gannon said.

Chester Police Department Chief Thomas Williver, who is the 2020 President of the Morris County Police Chiefs Association, called the CSI Section Detectives “consummate professionals.”

“The CSI Section of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office provides an invaluable resource to the municipal police departments in Morris County. The residents of Morris County should be comforted to know that the CSI Section detectives are following the best practices and standards in Crime Scene Detection, which assists law enforcement in successful prosecution or exoneration of suspects. The detectives are consummate professionals and we are proud

to work with them,” Chief Williver said.

Mr. Ryan and the Assessors said the CSI Section was in good shape before the assessment began and now, with its strengthening, is poised to be a model for crime scene units across the state and nation, particularly as demands and expectations by the public of their law enforcement professionals increase.

“It’s not an easy endeavor to open the door to scrutiny but the Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI Section did that, 100 percent,” Mr. Ryan said.

Assessors Tramontin and Molinaro said the CSI Detectives were fully committed to ensuring that all their work, no matter how minute or routine, was backed up by a directive, policy or procedure. By the end of the assessment, the CSI Section’s conforming policies and procedures were compiled in a volume entitled “Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Manual.”

“The end product is phenomenal,” Mr. Molinaro said.

The conformity assessment required the CSI Section to provide 126 objective written proofs, and in some cases to demonstrate skills in the categories of Facilities, Vehicles, Equipment and Supplies; Investigative Activities; Evidence and Property Control; Training and Professional Development; Ethics; Safety; and Reporting and Records Management.

The scope of questions ranged from inquiries about equipment used in processing activities, to evidence control, to documentation of shooting scenes to verification of reagents and processing powders prior to use.

“The facility is second to none and the people of Morris County should be very proud of the Crime Scene Investigation Section. The level of enthusiasm is high and everyone in the unit is thrilled to be there,” Mr. Ryan said.

Morris Educational Foundation Awards Record Number of Scholarships To Morristown High School Students

s the Morris School District school year comes to a close, the Morris Educational Foundation (MEF), is proud to announce it has awarded $371,250 in scholarships to 23 hardworking Morristown High School students to support their academic pursuits. The MEF, a non-profit organization enhancing excellence in education in the Morris School District, honored the deserving students and its generous donors during a virtual scholarship celebration on June 16.

Each year, the MEF awards the largest number of scholarships to Morristown High School seniors and this year is no exception. After receiving 170 applications from 87 students, 23 students were awarded scholarships ranging from $750 to $100,000. Three of these students received full-ride scholarships thanks to the generous donors who funded the Carl George and Shirley L. Eklund Scholarship and two Judy and Eliot Steinberg Scholarships. In addition, ten scholarships were established by or in support of Morristown High School alumni by families, individuals and foundations.

“We are thrilled to award a record number of scholarships totaling over $370,000 to hard-working seniors at Morristown High School this year,” said Molly Servais, Morris Educational Foundation Scholarship chair and member of the Morris Educational Foundation Board of Trustees.

“The continued generosity of our incredible donors amazes us every year, without whom none of these scholarships would be possible. Many families – especially now – are facing financial hardships due to COVID-19, so we are beyond grateful to be able to alleviate some of their concerns.”

Reflections at Thorpe Hall

By Richard Mabey Jr. ur story so far: It is the first day of summer vacation of 1969. I am 15 years old and have just completed my sophomore year at Boonton High School. It is nearing high noon and I have spent the entire morning painting Thorpe Hall of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, for my Eagle Scout project. After eating my lunch, a man comes to the door and begins banging on the door and demanding that I let him in. Fortunately, I had locked the door. I try to huddle out of sight of this man, who is continuing to hammer on the door and scream for someone to let him in. Shortly after that, my mom knocks on the door of Thorpe Hall. My sister, Patti, is with Mom. I clean up and we all go to Moe’s Sweet Shop. Cute Mary Tafano is at Moe’s. To my utter surprise, Mary asks me to her birthday party on Saturday. Later that afternoon, I help Mom to get supper ready, while my sister Patti plays in the yard, with her neighborhood friend. After supper,

Dad comes into my room, while I am at my desk and offers words of encouragement and hope to me. Morning comes, Dad drives me to Thorpe Hall on his way to work. In Thorpe Hall that morning, I hand write an essay, “What Scouting Means to Me.” My plan was to give it to Mr. Marino, Editor of the Lincoln Park Herald, for him to publish. Our story continues.

As I painted the interior walls of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s infamous Thorpe Hall, I dwelt upon the essay I had just written about what scouting meant to me. I had placed it in my shirt pocket, close to my heart. My plan was to type it up that night and present it to Mr. Marino, Editor of the Lincoln Park Herald, the next morning. At the time, I had no idea that the hand-written essay abiding in my shirt pocket was going to change my life.

As I continued to paint the walls, I welcomed the quiet and solace of Thorpe Hall.

There was no television and no radio playing. There was a certain stillness, a solitude that welcomed thought and reflection.

Little Richie Jim, yours truly, when I was just two years old, at my chalkboard desk that my dad had made for me, writing a stick figure story that I would tell to my mom, when I was done.

How is it that a moment in one’s life, will return to heart, mind and spirit, without any warning? And, in those moments of reflection, insight into one’s self will seem to flow into the deepest chambers of heart and mind, bringing one to a greater understand of their unique Divine calling, their purpose of breathing and living upon this planet.

As I painted, I reflected upon my very early childhood. Mom and Dad had rented a home on Hazel Street in Clifton. I remember that it had a little backyard for me to play in. The two-story home was divided into three separate apartments. My dad had built a little blackboard desk for me. I would spend hours upon hours at this little desk, while my mom cleaned and cooked supper, before Dad came home from work.

I was a very shy, quiet, sensitive child.

My mom often told me that I had a most wild and vivid imagination, even at a very, very young age. Mom also often told me how I would write stories at my desk, even at the age of two, drawing stick figures.

I would draw each little scene in a little block then tell Mom the story that I had just dreamt up. They say that you’re not supposed to remember moments when you’re as young as two, but I do remember

writing at my little blackboard desk at such a very young age.

Each and every one of us has a Divine gift, that is uniquely ours. It is ingrained in our DNA. It is something that is very sacred. Sometimes, we try to deny it, to avoid it, but it seems that our unique Divine gift will call us back, again and again.

It is likened to the tides of the deep blue sea. Sometimes it comes upon the sandy shores, at full force. At other times, it seems to retreat. To allow us to go our own way, but then it returns once again, stronger than ever.

For me, I know in my heart of hearts, that my Divine gift is putting words down on paper. To tell a story. Most of them true stores. But none-the-less, to tell a story.

As I painted Thorpe Hall that afternoon, all I could think about was to be in my bedroom, at my desk, typing up the essay that I had written earlier that day. At the time, I had no idea that that very hand-written essay, in my shirt pocket, was going to have a very profound effect upon my life.

I Remember Dad:

The P-51 Mustang, The Plane That Helped Win WW2

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father’s contribution to the good old U.S. of A. winning World War II, was that Dad was an airplane mechanic at the infamous Hickam Air Field in Hawaii. After Dad went Home to be with the Lord, my mom, my sister Patti and myself, went through Dad’s old paperwork from his years of service in the US Army Air Corps. The old shoebox was filled with awards and certificates for Dad’s service as an airplane mechanic.

Sometime, when I was in high school, I asked my dad why he didn’t take on a job as an airplane mechanic after the war. He simply answered me that he liked the open road. That his job as a long-distance truck driver gave him a chance to see America and meet so many different people.

Dad did work on B-25 Bomber Planes.

But, the plane that he worked on the most, was the one and only, P-51 Mustang. A lot of World War II historians have credited this plane for playing an integral role in the victory of the Allied Forces. And, the Mustang sports car was not named after

the horses that run wild in the rugged west. Rather it was named after one of the greatest fighter planes of all time, the fast-moving P-51.

The wing span of the P-51 Mustang measured 37 feet across. This fighting tiger plane measured 32 feet and three inches in length. It proudly stood between 12 and 13 feet in height. And, this amazing plane could hit speeds of up to 437 miles an hour. It was packed with four to six .50 caliber machine guns, that the pilots would use to rip apart enemy planes. The P-51 Mustang also had the ability to carry up to 2,000 pounds of bombs.

The P-51 Mustang has rightfully earned a place of being on display in the World War II Museum in New Orleans. What puts a chill in my spine, is to think that my dad may have worked on the very plane that is now on display in this great museum. I personally have not ever been to this museum, but I have it on my bucket list to visit someday.

When I was 12 years old, I built a P-51 Mustang model. I remember it so very well, because I was in the Barnett Hospital in Paterson at the time fighting a severe case of rheumatic fever. Dad had bought the model for me. I remember that there

was one nurse who gave me a hard time because she felt that I might be getting high from the model airplane glue. I had a little table, by my bed. When I completed it, I kept that Mustang airplane model on that little table throughout my long hospital stay. I remember that my father was

very proud of me for doing such a good job in building the model.

My dad once told me that the late great Jerry Siegel wrote several articles about the airplane mechanics of Hickam Air Field.

Jerry Siegel, who along with Joe Shuster, were the creators of Superman. Mr. Siegel served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II at Hickam Air Field.

Mr. Siegel’s biographies credit him with writing for Stars and Stripes newspaper, which he did. But Jerry did also write for Hickam Highlights, the official Army Air Corps newspaper of Hickam Air Field. Dad did get to meet this great American comic book icon at Hickam Air Field. My dad always said that Jerry Siegel was a very down to earth, regular guy.

I am very proud of my dad for the role he played in helping the USA win World War II. While, he didn’t hold a machine gun in a foxhole in Europe. My dad, and all the Army Air Corps men of Hickam Air Field, played a vital role in America’s victory. The Japanese wanted to take control of

Hawaii. Make no mistake about it. Hawaii would have been their stepping stone to building an air force focused on attacking America. That is why Hickam Air Field was so important in the Pacific Theater. It could never be caught off guard again, as it had been on the seventh of December of 1941.

Very few World War II veterans are still with us, on this side of Heaven’s Gate.

Most of their stories went with them. I knew so very many veterans of the Second World War, from when I was growing up in Lincoln Park. Most of them were incredibly humble about the great thing that they had done to keep democracy alive for all of us here in the USA. I deeply regret that I didn’t persevere to learn more about the sacrifice these great men made. So many true-life stories of courage and sacrifice will never be known. The veterans of World War II were a very special breed.

f you’ve ever noticed how thirsty you get when it’s hot outside, that’s because your body’s natural water content evaporates more quickly in warm weather. It’s not just your mouth that gets parched, however; your entire body, including your skin, can feel the impact of climbing temperatures.

Although it’s often overlooked, skin is an essential organ that needs special attention and care. After all, not only does your skin tell the true story of your health and age, it provides a protective barrier to the rest of your body.

Keeping your skin supple, soft and well-hydrated helps ensure it doesn’t dry and crack, which is just as possible during the warm summer months as winter. Use these tips to create a healthy summer skin care regimen.

Shorten bathtub and shower time. It may seem contradictory that spending more time in the tub or shower strips your skin of moisture, but prolonged heat does exactly that.

think of sun-kissed skin as a healthy glow, the opposite is actually true. A tan is a clear sign of skin damage, and the darker the tan, the greater the damage.
