Shepherding In A New Path In Roxbury Township

By Cindy Forrest fter spending the summer months in learning and advisory mode, Roxbury Township’s new township manager is settling in his new role bringing in new ideas and perspectives. On May 30 Roxbury welcomed John Shepherd as its new township manager. Hailing from North Huntingdon Township, a municipality outside of Pittsburgh, Shepherd replaces Christopher Rath, who retired after 16 years on the job. Earlier this year Roxbury Mayor Mark Crowley and the council went on a nationwide search for a new township manager. Two factors seemed to make Shepherd a standout candidate amongst the five finalists. First was the striking similarity between Roxbury and North Huntingdon in size, population and topography. The second was his understanding of economic development, a high priority focus for the council. “We are very excited to have Mr. Shepherd on board as our township manager,” said Crowley. “He brings the knowledge, confidence, enthusiasm, and skill set that will keep Roxbury Township well managed. He is also one of our newest residents!” Shepherd, 50, solidified his commitment
to the job by moving his wife and two daughters to Roxbury. As in most New Jersey municipalities, Roxbury’s council establishes policy and direction for the departments and the township manager is responsible for all of the day to day operations of local government. Serving as Chief Executive Officer, Shepherd’s job entails planning, organizing, coordinating and administering all township functions and activities through department heads and staff. “My role is to implement policy and programs and work together with the department directors,” said Shepherd. “I’m learning what’s working well and identifying where can improve. The key is that there is no crisis here; the town has been run well for years. I’m bringing in new ideas and a different perspective.” All of that in addition to the task of assisting in economic development could be daunting; however Shepherd takes it in stride. “There is no specific plan yet,” he said, “I’ll be working with our economic development commission.” Shepherd plans to attend the commission’s next meeting and listen to their strategies. “Then we’ll either revitalize the existing

plans or bring in new ideas. Their focus is more important than my focus,” he said. The economic development commission is a seven member panel made up of local business owners and long-term residents appointed by the mayor and council. He plans to offer aid to the commission by utilizing township staff to help out and by getting assistance from the county, a “big player” in economic development according to Shepherd. In North Huntingdon Shepherd helped revitalize an older commercial center. He started a program from scratch by developing a package of local tax incentives to assist with making the project a reality. He also networked locally and at the state level to attract some large players, a process that has already begun in Roxbury. “The Ledgewood Mall redevelopment is a big success for the township,” he said, “that a national development company saw the potential, the perceived value, in Roxbury is a very positive sign.” Shepherd explained that the township is not desperate for new development. “We don’t have to be reactionary, we can decide what the goal is and then go after the compacontinued on page 4

Are You Prepared For Cold And Flu Season?

t’s that time of year again... the Cold/Flu season is approaching (womp womp)! As the weather gets colder and the wind gets stronger our bodies become more susceptible to colds and the flu. In the United States, the Flu season starts in November and lingers until March... that’s 5 whole months! Which means that we are battling these nasty “bugs” for almost half of the year! So, if you’re not prepared it can be a grueling 5 months! Instead, learn what you can do to stay Cold and Flu free this year. Here are the Facts... • The Center for Disease Control reports that Influenza, aka the Flu, affects 5%-20% of the United States population and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to complications associated with the Flu. On average 26,000 people die from the Flu each year. • Severe Flu complications can occur at any age, but mostly affect the immune compromised. So, the elderly, infants and those with chronic health issues have to be extra careful this time of year. • The Flu is contagious for 1-4 days before any symptoms appear and up to 5 days after the symptoms first appear. • Approximately 50% of infected people do not show any symptoms, but are still contagious. • While the common cold and the Flu are
both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. Generally, the Flu tends to be more severe than a common cold. Here are the major differences… Prevention, Prevention, Prevention! The best way to deal with any illness/ disease is to prevent yourself from getting it in the first place. Acupuncture can help to prevent colds and the flu by stimulating the body’s immune system. Inserting a few needles into various acupuncture points on the body jump starts your immune system by increasing and strengthening circulation of energy and blood (including your white blood cells- your body’s defensive line). Here are some ways to help prevent colds/ flu this season:
• Boost your immune system with Acupuncture! • Wash your hands often with soap and water! In the winter, consume foods like winter squash, dates, black mushrooms, ginger, cinnamon and soups. • Always drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. • Keep your neck covered. • Reduce your stress with things like Acupuncture, yoga and meditation. Fall In Love With The Roxbury News’ New Magazine-Style

Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out. The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine. “The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.” New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 municipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses. The Flanders couple began their newspaper company MJ

(My Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly. That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a new view on media,” says Nicastro. Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News. “I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle. This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers get what they want

Morris Libraries Expand Its Digital Library Program

Now, residents and teachers in Morris County can access books on their personal devices, without leaving home. Now that the school year has started, MAIN (The Morris Automated Information Network)
consortium libraries are making things more appealing for youngsters and even adults who are tech savvy. MAIN consortium library card holders now have the opportunity to use the TumbleBooks Library to access digital children’s story books, read along eBooks, videos, games and more. In order to help grant access to services like Tumblebooks.
MAIN Executive Director Phillip Berg feels this will not only help library membership, but enhance education. “The MAIN member libraries felt it important to help support the efforts of teachers and school libraries by not just offering a limited courtesy library card to teachers, but a full access one,” Berg said.“ Educating our young people is an important endeavor which (public libraries) can and should help as members of the greater local community.” Additionally, K‐12 teachers can register for a full service library card in the town in which they teach if they do not already reside in the MAIN public libraries service area. TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, available by subscription to Elementary Schools and Public Libraries around the world. Library users may access TumbleBooks by visiting a par-
ticipating library’s website or installing the app on their smartphone. Users will be asked for their library card number to verify their access. Emily Weisenstein, head of youth services at Madison Public Library, who co‐chairs the MAIN Youth Services Committee, feels this new app is a step in the right direction. “It is a fantastic resource for our patrons,” Weisenstein said. “They offer a wide range of juvenile eBooks that children can access at anytime, anywhere – all they need is an Internet connection and a library card. I especially like their selection of interactive picture books, which allows children to read along with some of their favorite titles. First Leg Of Hopatcong Trail Opened With Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

By Dawn M Chiossi verything worthwhile happens in stages, and so it is with the Lake Hopatcong Trail. On Sept. 23, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the first phase opening of the trail. Just in time to enjoy this
picturesque time of the year, more than 100 people showed up to support this wonderful multi-community project. Everyone from community groups and leaders, to volunteers, to elected officials, to speakers, celebrated this long running project. Afterwards they took advantage of the new trails by going

on a short, approximately 20 minute, hike. The events took place at the Hopatcong Senior Center. The first phase of the trail runs through nine miles of Hopatcong, beginning along the Morris Canal Towpath across from Hopatcong State Park in Landing. This includes 13 access points, winding through Hopatcong and ending through Prospect Point in Jefferson. It is tangible evidence of what tireless hard work and boundless energy of the members and volunteers can do. Impressed with the first phase, Donna Macalle- Holly of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation says, “It was a really great turnout. We are so excited.” Macalle-Holly praises the many workers and volunteers who gave their free time to make the trails brand new.
“Volunteers worked from April to the very end of August to do this,” she remarks. “They even received two days training on trail blazing and trail maintenance by the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference.“ According to Macalle-Holly, that translates into 440 volunteer hours and $12,000 in volunteer time. “We are grateful for each and every one of our volunteers,” she says proudly. The trails are not only people-friendly; they are dogfriendly as well. This first phase of the trail was funded by the Federal Highway Administration Recreational Trails Program, through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The second part of the leg is slated to take place in Jefferson. When completely finished, continued on page 10

Succasunna Christmas Bazaar To Benefit Mission Projects
he Succasunna United Methodist Church’s Youth Group will host a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the church. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature
vendors selling jewelry, cosmetics, crafts, books, cooking, bags and baked goods. The proceeds will benefit Succasunna United Methodist Church’s Youth Group mission projects.

When asked if she walks and hikes on the trails herself, Macalle-Holly answers an absolute yes. She mentions many wonderful things about them, but in particular she mentions the Kindness for Christopher campaign that so many have participated in. Kindness for Christopher is a campaign in honor of a local boy killed in a boating accident who loved the trails. Because kindness matters,
along the trail people will see painted rocks and signs with inspirational messages on them. “The trails are wonderful for anyone who likes to exercise outdoors, those who like to volunteer and meet people, those who are interested in sharing the same passions that you have,” Macalle-Holly asserts. oxbury High School art students met with its newest artist-in-residence, Ian Ferguson, on Sept. 18, to brainstorm ideas and do presentations for the school’s mural for the school’s main lobby. The Visual Arts Department had been looking to have a mural created in the Main Lobby to generate visual excitement as everyone enters the building. Ferguson is a contemporary artist, illustrator, and designer living and working in Brooklyn,
N.Y. According to his website, he is “inspired by life experiences and consciousness. His thoughtfully detailed illustrative style evokes a sense of contemplative meaning in each piece. He has worked with clients such as The Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Brazil, The World Trade Center in New York City, Converse and RedBull. Ferguson has exhibited his work in cities throughout the United States as well as internationally.

he Hopatcong Borough School District recently held its second annual free Family Appreciation Night. This year, the fantastic weather moved the event outdoors to the Hopatcong High School courtyard. More than 300 people — students, parents and district employees — attended the event, which was created and run by the guidance department. The event was intended to enhance community relations and recognize parents for their continued support in the educational partnership. Each school in the district sponsored an activity at the fair. Hudson Maxim Elementary School’s table allowed kids the opportunity to plant vegetable seeds in a take-home
planter. Tulsa Trail Elementary School sponsored a hula hooping activity and a table-top claw game with prizes. Durban Avenue Elementary School worked with students on playing mini-Kan-Jam frisbee toss and corn hole. Hopatcong Middle School volunteers helped kids play a target game and held a jellybean counting contest. The HHS volunteers offered free face painting. Due to the generosity of sponsors, the event also featured two bounce houses, a funky photo booth, various contests, free food—including Dunkin’ Donuts goods, cotton candy and popcorn, as well as hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and desserts, prize giveaways, numerous prize raffles and a DJ.

Maxim School Students Raise Pediatric Cancer Awareness

n Sept. 29, the students and staff members of Hudson Maxim School in Hopatcong participated in the 7th Annual “Go Gold Day“ for Pediatric Cancer Awareness month by wearing yellow or gold to school. Students were excited to show their support of Pediatric Cancer Awareness by sharing a positive attitude and filling buckets with kind things they say and do on this special day. Less than four percent of Federal funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research each year,
yet 15,000 children are diagnosed each year with pediatric cancer. Go Gold Day was sponsored by Go 4 the Goal, whose mission is to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial support, creating unique
hospital programs, wish granting, and funding innovative research. This year, the staff members donated money in support of two families from Hopatcong whose children are currently undergoing treatment for pediatric cancer.

he Hopatcong Marching Chiefs recently participated in West Point Football Band
Day. The Marching Chiefs rehearsed for two hours Sept. 30, along with seven other bands, West Point Cadet Band and the West Point Army Band. For the second year in a row, cold, windy wet weather moved in mid-morning, but this year the rain cleared out for the Army Black Knights Game Day events, including the West Point Cadet Review, and the Black Nights Alley pre-game concerts and games. The paratrooper demonstration was the only event cancelled. The band cheered on
Army as they beat University of Texas University at El Paso. At halftime, the bands played to a large crowd following the West Point Athletic Hall of Fame inductions. “I continue to be impressed with our students, reporting to school so early for a long bus trip following an away Chief’s football game, to then participate in a rehearsal, tour West Point, sit through the first half of a college football game, brave cold wet weather, and then continue to perform very well and more importantly, have a great time and have fun,’’ said Band Director Kurt Zimmermann.

Pinwheels Symbolize Peace
M
rs. Pagano’s class in the Hudson Maxim School in Hopatcong recently celebrated The International Day of Peace. The International Day of Peace, sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day, is a holiday observed annually on September 21. It is dedicated to world peace. To celebrate this day, Lisa Schuffenhauer, the school counselor, visited the classroom to help teach a lesson on peace. The students enjoyed a video about a bunny learning how to be peaceful. They then
brainstormed ways to share peace at Hudson Maxim School, such as being bucket fillers, sharing, and using kind words. Finally, the students took part in Pinwheels for Peace. This is an initiative for schools to create and display pinwheels that signal world peace. A pinwheel is a childhood symbol – it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, peaceful. The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country, the world.
