Former Randolph Resident Writes Book of Reverence for Vietnam Veterans

By Evan Wechman arch 29th was National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a day on which former 25-year Randolph resident Susan Hunter believes all veterans who served in that war should be honored. Hunter, an author who now resides in Tennessee, maintains that, unfortunately, that is not the case. Unlike veterans of wars before the Vietnam War, such as World War II, where almost all Americans have deep reverence for those soldiers, the Vietnam War still today is filled with controversy. According to Hunter, that controversy caused a negative backlash against those veterans when they returned home, which remains today. This past March 29th, Hunter’s book “The Bravest Generation,” was released to the public and Hunter hopes it helps correct the wrongs these Veterans suffered while setting the record straight. According to Hunter, who
spent several years preparing for her book by interviewing veterans all over the country, she refers to them as “The Bravest Generation” because of all the negativity they endured both during and after the war from home. “I really got such a sense of what they endured. And I started realizing that they had to endure so many things that no soldier or no community of soldiers had to deal with prior to then and not since then, because we learned a lot off of their backs,” she said. Hunter believes several factors contributed to the lack of support the Vietnam Veterans received. Some of these include the ambiguity of reasons they were there, the limited rules of engagement, and most importantly, the coverage by the media. So, while many factors led to their mistreatment, especially upon returning home, Hunter holds the media the most responsible. “So even though I feel like the politicians didn’t do
anything to save our guys, they didn’t do enough for sure. They certainly didn’t do enough to quell all the rhetoric and the negativity; the media is powerful. And I think they realized during this war, they realized how powerful they were, and that became insatiable,” Hunter said. “They actually were shaping public opinion of an entire war. And so I believe the media did not go into it to harm our country and harm a whole generation of veterans. I think they just said,
