Local Churches Reach Out Through Operation Christmas Child

By Elsie Walker little girl opened a gift box on Christmas and a big smile appeared on her face. Seeing that, the adults nearby wondered what caused such happiness.

The girl took out her treasure: Some folded sheets of plain paper. What some might see as hardly a gift can mean so much to a poor child.

In this case, the child loved to draw, but had no paper. In some countries, a Christmas box that includes school supplies can mean education, as now the child receiving that can attend school. Children such as these usually don’t get Christmas gifts or even know why Christmas is celebrated.

While some may think it seems early to be thinking about Christmas, it isn’t for two local churches that are reaching out to poor children around the globe through a project this fall. Through Operation Christmas Child, shoebox-size boxes are filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, and sent to needy children in more than 100 countries around the world, and with each one will be added the Christmas story of the birth of Christ.

While the boxes may seem like a small thing, Stela and the Rev. Dr. Nick Petrov of Landing can attest to their power. When they lived in their native Bulgaria, the Petrovs were on the receiving end, getting the boxes and

distributing them to needy children through the church they served. This year, the Petrovs are seeing the project from the giving end as they have inspired the churches Nick pastors to participate in Operation Christmas Child.

“When we lived in Bulgaria and distributed the Operation Christmas Child boxes, we witnessed the joy the boxes bring in orphanages, hospitals, schools, and to gypsy families and Muslim kids,’’ said Nick Petrov. “We have seen an unimaginable lack and poverty, but the boxes carried joyfulness and relief to kids and families in need. They all loved the boxes.

“Also, those Muslim families were always happy that Jesus cares for them, even though they are of a different religion,’’ he continued.

“As the Pastor of Millbrook United Methodist Church and Port Morris United Methodist Church, I feel so blessed that these two congregations joyfully stepped up to participate in this international outreach project.”

While attending a local ecumenical Thanksgiving service last year, Stela saw the boxes she had known so well in Bulgaria.

She discovered it was a project of Samaritan’s Purse International Relief and then found the New Jersey coordinator for the project.

Petrov told the coordinator that she knew of the project from the perspective of one who hands out the boxes. She was asked to speak to a group about her experiences this past summer. Then, Stela Petrov decided

to ask her husband’s churches to join in the Christmas box project.

“Every box is important; every child is important,” she has told the Port Morris congregation. In Bulgaria, the Petrovs distributed boxes through their church to a children’s hospital, three orphanages and a weekly child development center.

The latter is for parents who cannot afford care for their children while they work, so leave the children there on Monday and pick them up on Friday. The church would bring the boxes to the children, or, if possible, bring the children to the church. Wherever the boxes were distributed, the church made it a time of celebration for the children. They developed relationships with the orphanages and started a weekly arts and crafts program for the children.

Stela told of children in the hospital who went to sleep hugging the Christmas box tightly.

The way it works is that special boxes are distributed by Samaritan’s Purse and then can be filled according to sex (boy or girl) and age grouping: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. On its Operation Christmas Child webpage, Samaritan’s Purse shares what items can be put in a box.

Stela noted that it is a “combination of the useful and something that will make the child happy.” She shared that people can also put a picture and/or note to the recipient. continued on page 4

You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down…

Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other

processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines.

These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NFKb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place. Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases.

On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases

and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! On Facebook, Nick saw the story of a little boy who made a Christmas box in 2000 and included his picture and address in it. The recipient was a little girl in the Philippines. She tried to write the boy, but the letter was returned.

Years later, she tried looking for him on Facebook and found him.

They started a friendship which ended in marriage.

Boxes can be put together by individuals or taken on as a group project. Postage can be paid online or given to a drop-off site. If postage is paid online, an individual can track the box to its final stop. Stela noted that each box’s travel is a long one as it goes through many countries and each country has its own customs procedures. Thus, the

boxes sent this year will probably be given out next year.

Stela noted how happy she is to be involved in the giving side of the project, and said it is a blessing to be able to involve her own children, Angie and David, in helping children less fortunate.

However, more help is needed, she said.

“Every year, there are more children than boxes,” she said.

The collection week for completed Operation Christmas Child boxes is Nov. 13 through Nov. 20.

Fernbrook Students Inspired At Summer STEAM Program

ore than 100 rising thirdto fifth-grade students at Fernbook Elementary School in Randolph spent three weeks engaged in creative problem solving and learning about engineering, environmental science, computer technology, art technology and performing arts activities through the Summer STEAM Program.

Students selected the discipline they were most interested in and studied it from July 24 to Aug. 10 in a special morning summer program at the school.

This was the fourth year and largest year of the program at Fernbrook, which increased by 10 students.

“The vision was for a program that was academic in nature, but exciting and hands-on, where students could deeply explore a subject of interest,” Janulis said.

“Every year, each class has a new focus and uses the latest technology for students to research and learn.”

Local Songwriter And Grammy Voter Hopes To Resonate Positive Vibes Through Music

For those who did not hear the meaningful words and catchy tunes in Randolph resident Christopher Scott Welch’s music, his most recent songs were recently released on iTunes.

Uplifting with an aim to spread positivity, Welch is hoping to share his music with anyone wanting to listen. Welch plans to perform at the Randolph Country Fair on Sat., Sept.

23, with co-songwriter Dan Thompson on keyboard.

“I hope it finds them and guides them in their path,” says Welch, a self-employed writer, producer and trainer.

“My song, “A Special Kinda Faith,” is a spirited secular hymn for human hope: To be performed - for goodness’ sake -

wherever goodness needs inspiration in Randolph ... whether to reinvigorate choirs or cantors for congregations in churches, synagogues, or mosques ... or to excite administrators for students in schools of any sort,” he says.

“Maybe even to melt the mindset of any resentful heart currently taken with the tempting torch of prejudice.”

He says his objective is to “spread positive vibes amid negative attitudes, politically. My Organizational Mission Statement: To positively move human beings with words and song.”

Welch’s organization for publishing is Candlework Productions (ASCAP), in which he is a professional member.

As a songwriter for 17 years, Welch began in 2010 to create the words and set them to catchy melodies.

Studying both music and writing set the stage for Welch’s blend of words and rhythm.

He attended County College of Morris in Randolph for music; print journalism at South California in Los Angeles; and poetry online with the University of Phoenix and CCM. “Words are a rough racket,” says 46-year old Welch.

“It’s a compulsion and a challenge in writing in general. I yearn for truth when I write.”

Welch says he was tuned into songwriting when a “very kind woman” said she liked music and asked him if he ever thought of writing songs.

“I wrote bad ones to begin with,” he admits. “I care about the words in the music not just the music.” Songs that are upbeat, especially that carry a bit of country, and that have some structure and tell a story are ones he likes to emulate.

“Country, gospel, I found that’s where the good writing was,” he says.

When it comes

to his songwriting, he says his goal is to write the song then get someone else to sing his music.

He did perform at the N.J. State Fair three times but he sometimes prefers the sound of his lyrcis when sung by another voice.

“I like to do both,” he says about writing lyrics and singing, “but I like my songs to be heard the best way possible. Sometimes songs should be sung by the best person possible.”

Singer Leanna Weiss sang his song “At Home In Your Arms,” for example and he says “She sounded better than

I could sing.”

The first song he ever wrote, “The Rich Life,” was while he was a cantor at Resurrection Parish in Randolph. Pianist Dan Thompson arranged the music.

The song is about trying to pay the bills

and is available on iTunes.

“It’s about challenges of work but spirit of love keeps us going,” says Welch.

Commemorative Bench And Tree Program Grows Throughout The Years In Randolph

By Henry M. Holden andolph Township has created a way for its residents and organizations to memorialize and honor others with a long-lasting tribute. The Township Commemorative Tree and Bench Program offers donors the opportunity to donate and dedicate either a park bench or a tree at one of the township’s five parks.

The program started over 12 years ago according to Russ Newman, director of the parks and recreation department.

“The parks committee felt it would give people the opportunity to dedicate a tree or a park bench in memory of a loved one, or as a celebration of a special event such as an anniversary, a birth or a marriage. A donation for a bench is $1,075 and for a tree it is $375.

“For the tree program, we will plant a young tree and mount a commemorative plaque in the lobby of the Community

Center. For the bench, we would create a plaque and mount it on the bench.

“We generally get to dedicate two or three benches a year, and one tree,” said Newman. “We allow the people to choose one of the five parks they would like the bench to be in because the park probably has a special memory for them. However, the final placement will be at the discretion of the Randolph Township Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services will work with the donor to find the best location.

“We have a ceremony when we’re dedicating the bench or the tree, and the people who requested it are generally there for the ceremony.

A different park or open space area is selected each year as the focus of the program by the Randolph Township Parks Advisory Committee. Tree and bench dedications are typically

scheduled in May and October.

“A plaque is placed on the bench or at the base of the tree indicating the name of the person, event or organization being recognized. With more than 12 years of this program there are many examples throughout Brundage Park, Freedom Park and the other parks.

“So far, this year, two benches have been donated and dedicated in Randolph,” said Newman.

“One dedication took place

in Freedom Park, and another took place on the trail close to the municipal building. The two benches we did this year were kind of unique since they were both in honor of someone rather than in memory of someone.

In May, Lenny Pietrewicz the former coach of the Randolph High School Girls’ Track Booster Club had a bench dedicated to him.

“It’s not easy to write a song,” says Welch, adding that it can take up to two hours to write the song, including lyrics and melody, then there is the production process of producing the song and recording.

“I’ve gotten in a rhythm,” he says. “Songs actually flow through me; it’s a comfortable knack.”

As a substitute teacher in grades pre-K through 11 within Randolph schools, Welch says he would typically conclude a lesson by having the kids help create a song based on the topic at hand such as a mythology character.

“They put words to music then have them sing it,” he says.

“I do it on the spot; it keeps me on my toes.”

Welch’s three completed albums include: “Two Can Make A Day;” “The Rich Life;” and “A Fair To Remember.”

He also has a number of singles with his most recent release, “A Special Kind Of Faith” just released last month, which is a “positive song about keeping one’s eyes on goodness in challenging times.”

“State Fair,” a song about the fair he wrote a few years and performed it at the N.J. State Fair, can be viewed on uTube.

“My Queen Of The Fair,” he also performed at the fair and can be seen on uTube and heard on iTunes.

“A bench was also dedicated in Freedom Park to Gary and Kathy Algeier, two longtime residents of Randolph who made many contributions to the community during the 40 years they lived here,” said Newman.

“Kathy was a long-time volunteer in the township’s schools,

and library. Gary served on the town council for 15 years and as mayor for two years. Perhaps his most lasting achievement was to create a vision and provide leadership for the development of Freedom Park. The Algeiers, along with many family and friends, attended the bench dedication in July.

“Grammy voting has made me very serious,” he says. “A song with a negative message can be a negative influence. A song can change a life.”

Welch refers to the song “Eye to Eye,” by Mike and the Mechanics, which shares a story about a son not telling his father his true feelings before he dies as the lyrics say “It’s too late when we die, we don’t admit eye to eye.”

This song was an eye-opener for Welch who says “My dad and I, our relationship was not good.” After listening to those lyrics, he made an effort to restore that bond with his father,

“Someone who is tender or fragile from a breakup can hear a song and get past it,” he says.

Welch’s hope is for organizations, such as churches in the area, take an interest in his music, especially his latest release “A Special Kind of Faith,” and they “consider that a local songwriter is trying to spread positive songs that are new. It’s nice to hear a new one these days; it’s a blessing. I want people to feel and be moved. I want my songs to be a positive contribution.”

If all else, he knows his fouryear old daughter, Aliya, is listening. Her favorite of her dad’s songs is “My Queen of the Fair,” which is about the beauty pageant held at the N.J State Fair at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta.

If he knows she is listening, he says, “I’d just be blowing her a kiss thru the air to her cheek.”

Pink Extensions Fundraiser For Breast Cancer Cure Kicks Off At Alfonso’s Salon

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month. and throughout the month, Alfonso’s Salon for the 7th year in a row is joining the fight to defeat breast cancer, the second leading cancer killer of women.

100% of donations and profits for this fundraiser will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure of North Jersey.

“We are proud to help where we can to raise funds to assist research, increase awareness and promote screenings,” says Alfonso, owner/stylist of Alfonso’s Salon at Sutton Plaza.

“Breast Cancer affects so many families. I have seen it touch the lives of many, and happily count many as successful survivors of this disease, because of early detection.”The Salon has

received much recognition for their efforts to help defeat breast cancer, and is offering pink hair extensions to commemorate the cause. The extensions are available in a shade of bright pink for $12 each. In order to eliminate any bank fees cash is required.

The non-permanent extensions are a simple process and it only takes minutes to apply, Alfonso reports. “We compress the pink extension into the hair without causing any harm to the client’s own hair. They look great on women of all ages, from kids to seniors, with some customers getting two or three at a time.

They can be easily cut to any length the client wants and will stay in as long as a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner is not used on the root area.

County Flood Maps Available From FEMA

fter several delays, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has released its long-awaited revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Morris County.

Digital versions of the maps can be viewed at http://bit. ly/1puArso. This website also provides a search function for specific addresses. Those who live in or near a flood zone are strongly encouraged to review the maps.

Homeowners should make map revision requests to their municipalities, which will convey the information to FEMA. FEMA will schedule two open house meetings for the public in

early November. The exact dates will be announced by FEMA via public notices that placed in local newspapers (the county also intends to publicize the dates). FEMA’s formal 90-day Appeal Period for municipalities is expected to begin in the late fall.

By Ann Marie Barron charming Long Valley Thrift Boutique has lowered its already bargain prices and is now offering every item in the store for $5.

RACKS boutique, on Schooley’s Mountain Road near the center of Long Valley, stocks gently used clothing and accessories donated from the community – at this unbelievably low price. Many items are like new, with some still bearing their original store tags. All proceeds from sales go directly to community programs.

“The quality of the donated clothing is really unbelievable,’’ said Michelle Barron, vice president of RACKS for the Long Valley Junior Women’s Club, which runs the boutique. “The generosity of the community is really overwhelming. They donate really pristine, beautiful, designer clothing. But we’d like so see more customers take advantage of the great selection.’’

The store stocks a huge variety of women’s and children’s clothing, including holiday clothing, dresses, jeans, sweaters, skirts, blouses, shoes and accessories like scarves, costume jewelry and handbags.

Run by the club since 2015, the store hasn’t seen a huge shopper turnout, despite the impressive selection. Barron said a handful of repeat customers sing the shop’s praises and many have worn RACKS items to the office, graduations, holiday events and even to weddings and formals.

Overall, though, shopper turnout has been lower than expected, so the group is trying to spread the word, and is offering the $5 deal, which applies to every item in the store.

“We just want more people to stop in and see for themselves all the great items we have here,’’ Barron said. “If our hours aren’t convenient, we’ll schedule a time for a private shopping session.’’

turnout, RACKS has been a boon to the community. The club has donated 75 coats to the Morris County Foster Parent Association. Additionally, 40 suits were donated to Dress For Success Morris County, a charity that strives to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing them with support and professional attire.

The club has also been a valuable resource to area families who were displaced by fire or floods in recent months. Families were invited to shop for free in the boutique.

The shop stocks only the finest quality clothing donated. Clothing that isn’t deemed RACKS-worthy is donated to the nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Junior Women’s Club is 60 members strong and has historically supported the community through its contributions to the police department, the town’s first aide squads, the library and its volunteer fire department.

Battered women’s shelters, local food pantries, cancer research organizations, recreational programs and elementary school programs have also benefitted from the club’s past fund-raising efforts.

Maple Olive Cheesecake Bites Makes: 16-20 mini cheesecakes Nonstick cooking spray 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs 2 tablespoons butter, melted 3 tablespoons sugar, divided 6 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg 1/4 cup coarsely chopped Cali-

fornia Ripe Olives Heat oven to 325 F and coat 16-20-cup mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray.

In small bowl, stir together graham cracker crumbs, butter and 1 tablespoon sugar. Place equal amounts into each mini muffin cup then press firmly into bottom of each cup. Working with one cup at a time, press small piece of plastic wrap onto surface and press crust firmly into mini muffin cups.

In large bowl of electric mixer, beat cream cheese, maple syrup and remaining sugar until

smooth; beat in flour and vanilla on low speed. Add egg and beat until just combined; stir in olives.

Spoon equal amounts into each cup. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until filling feels set.

Let cool completely then run small, thin knife around edge of each to remove from pan.

Black and White Pizza Makes: 1 pizza 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus additional for pizza crust 1 cup onion, quartered and thinly sliced 2 tablespoons roasted garlic, minced 4 ounces small baby bella mushrooms, chopped flour 1 package prepared pizza dough 1 cup prepared Alfredo sauce 1 cup smoked mozzarella cheese, shredded 4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, torn into 1/2-inch pieces 1 small boneless, skinless chicken breast, cooked and thinly sliced 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary,

chopped 1 can (6 ounces) extra-large California Black Ripe Olives, drained and cut in wedges freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Heat oven to 450 F and line large baking sheet with parchment paper.

In large skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add onion, garlic and mushrooms, and cook, stirring frequently, 10 minutes, or until onions are soft.

Reserve.

Roll pizza dough into thin oval on lightly floured surface.

Transfer to prepared baking sheet and brush lightly with olive oil then spread evenly with Alfredo sauce.

Top with mushroom mixture, cheeses, chicken and rosemary.

Sprinkle olives over pizza.

Bake 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and lightly browned around edges.

Serve with Parmigiano-Reggiano.

olunteers are needed to help low- and moderate-income people in northern New Jersey, especially those 60 and older, prepare their annual taxes.

The AARP Foundation TaxAide Program is looking for those willing to help people in need get the the deductions and credits they deserve and only pay their fair share in taxes.

Training is provided in late fall/ early winter, and taxes are prepared in February thru April 15.

No prior tax experience is needed - just a willingness to participate.

Morris’ Rich History To Unfold In Fall Programs

he Morris County Tourism Bureau is inviting the public to experience the rich history of Morris County during several fall historical programs planned this season.

“Betsy Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton: A Match Made in Morristown,” will be offered twice in October.

During the Revolutionary War, a young and dashing Alexander Hamilton, General George Washington’s aide-de-camp at the Ford Mansion, spent the winter and spring in Morristown while his future wife, Betsy Schuyler, was nearby at the home of the Campfields. Hear the romantic tale of their courtship from members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the conservators of the c. 1760 Schuyler-Hamilton House.

On Saturdays, Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 at 10 a.m., at the Schuyler-Hamilton House in Morristown, tours will be conducted.

The size is limited to 30 and the cost is $15. There is limited park-

ing on Olyphant Place, which is off Morris Avenue, between Elm and Ridgedale. Parking is also available at the Morristown Train Station, Lackawanna Place.

“Ghostly Revelations at the Ford Mansion,’’ will be held on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m.

The Ford Mansion underwent a paranormal study by Gordon Ward, a well-respected investigator of ghosts and hauntings and an author on the topic. This program will include photos, audio recordings, developing theories, and information collected from his study of the Ford Mansion, General George Washington’s home for 200 days in 1780, and the Ford family’s home for three generations.

Audience members will have a chance to share their ghost stories with Ward and perhaps get some answers, just in time for Halloween, on their own personal haunting experiences.

Participants should in the auditorium of the Washington’s Headquarters Museum at 10

a.m. The cost is $15 per person.

Free parking is available in two lots adjacent to the park and along Washington Place.
