PVBOE Keeps High School Fencing After Show of Strong Community Support

he Passaic Valley High School Board of Education decided to continue its fencing program for its upcoming school year after several dozen attendees voiced concerns to board members against eliminating it.

News about the proposed cut stemmed from the board’s June 25, which brought many supporters of the program to the board meeting during public comment with impassioned pleas to keep it on.

Current high school fencers, former fencers, and future fencers, including many parents, touted the program’s importance for a variety of reasons. Those who spoke publicly emphasized its value as being one of the few sports which encompasses all student abilities, particularly those with special needs. Some praised the sport for encouraging many

to enroll in college after they graduate high school.

Nancy Ortiz, president of the Parents Fencing Association, and mother of a PV graduate who had fenced, said she had addressed the rationale by one board member via email who felt the program hadn’t produced a win collectively as a team as one reason for the proposed cut. Ortiz responded that although it had not sustained a team win for the high school, many students are positively affected individ-

“Every year, multiple fencers receive scholarships for colleges for fencing,” said Ortiz, adding that the association was willing to pick up three line items totaling $5,155 to offset the fencing budget of $21,090, bringing it down to $15,004. Additionally, she added that the coach’s salary could be waived further bringing the operating budget for fencing down to roughly $9,000.

Ortiz further stated that those who run the fencing program were willing to do whatever it takes to allow the high school to keep it on.

“Keeping this program is important not only for our able students but for our special needs students because this scholarship money is really important,” she added.

Ortiz also thanked those who came in attendance to speak out on behalf of the program.

Vince Paragano, head fencing coach for Drew University, who is also a former high school fencing coach and board member in Somerset County, said that one of the goals of the fencing program was to help raise college enrollment after he helped implement a fencing team at Bernards High School, where he said he took the fencing team to a state championship within four years, He also implemented a program at Governor Livingston High School.

“I know both sides of this equation and those players are still very appealing at the college level,” he explained.

“In fact, I have two of your players on my team now and I hope to get more in the future.”

Paragano also shared information on statistics that showed fencing as having the lowest incident of injury. Additionally, he noted that one quarter of all high school fencers wind up fencing at the college level. For every 220 soccer players in high school, only one goes on to play in college.

“While you’re looking at the

immediate dollars in cutting a program, the long-term effect of having that program and the upside is there,” he stated,. “Simply tweak so that it survives.”

Jo-Anne Mitchell, former Woodland Park Board of Education member who served on the board for ten years, also spoke in favor of the program. Mitchell is the mother to two PV graduates who had fenced in the program, including her youngest who currently attends PV and fences in the program. She said the program has made a special impact on her older son who was a special needs student.

“He played one day of T-ball, the only sport he ever played until he got here and he fenced. He excelled at it,” she said.

“Fencing is the only sport that I know that is inclusive of all children, the advanced placement students, the special needs students and everybody in between. Everyone participates in the sport. There is a camaraderie like no other sport or club. It teaches these students life lessons and especially acceptance of people.”

Mitchell also pointed out that although she understood budget decisions that need to be made by the board for the upcoming school, she noted that the amount to run the program was nominal, amounting to the health benefits of a teacher for the school year.

“To disappoint that many students, especially younger siblings who come to the matches and watch their older siblings. please reconsider.”

Little Falls Biz Holds Annual Block Party Event

he Little Falls Business Association “LittleFallsBiz” held their third annual block party recently on Paterson Avenue and Main Street on June 13. Cloudy weather didn’t put a damper on the festivities, with many local businesses coming out to showcase their businesses. Attendees were treated to great food and information on the business, with fun activities for children, such as face-painting and balloon animals. An apple pie eating contest was also the highlight of the evening, where Mayor James Damiano and Police Chief Steven Post went head-to-head.

According to Karen Winick, president of LittleFallsBiz, the weather kept some away but the rain held off and those who came had a great time.

Winink is also co-owner of Pencilworks Studio, located at 96 Main Street.

“The highlight was the pie eating contest between our mayor and police chief, with the chief edging out the mayor this year “ she said. “It was all great fun! Everyone who attended really enjoyed themselves.”

Winick added that the association appreciated many of the local businesses who donated to the event, such as Shop Rite of Little Falls that donated the apple pies and Lakeland Bank, located at 86-88 Main Street, supplying live DJ music. Some restaurants on hand to supply food were La Brace Seafood, located at 77 Main Street and Casa Arturo Bistro, located at 75 Main Street, It’s really a nice event that began three years ago. We’re looking forward to running it again next year.”

Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children’s Vision?

A

s children spend more time tethered to screens, there is an increasing concern about potential harm to their visual development. Ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – are seeing a marked increase in children with dry eye and eye strain from too much screen time. But does digital eye strain cause lasting damage? Should your child use reading glasses or computer glasses? It’s a fact that there is a world-wide epidemic of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Since 1971, the incidence of nearsightedness in the US nearly doubled, to 42 percent. In Asia, up to 90 percent of teenagers and adults are nearsighted. Clearly, something is going on. But scientists can’t agree on

exactly what.

A new study appearing in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, offers further evidence that at least part of the worldwide increase in nearsightedness has to do with near work activities; not just screens but also traditional books. And, that spending time outdoors—especially in early childhood—can slow the progression of nearsightedness. It remains unclear whether the rise in nearsightedness is due to focusing on phones all the time, or to light interacting with our circadian rhythms to influence eye growth, or none of the above.

While scientists look for a definitive answer, there is no doubt that most computer users experience digital eye strain.

Kids are no different from adults when it comes to digital eye strain. They can experience dry eye, eye strain, headaches, and blurry vision, too. While symptoms are typically temporary, they may be frequent and persistent.

But this doesn’t mean they need a prescription for computer glasses or that they have developed an eye condi-

tion of middle-age that requires reading glasses, as some suggest. It also doesn’t mean that blue light coming from computer screens is damaging their eyes. It means they need to take more frequent breaks. This is because we don’t blink as often while using computers and other digital devices. Extended reading, writing or other intensive near work can also cause eye strain. Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain: Set a kitchen timer or a smart device timer to remind them.

Alternate reading an e-book with a real book and encourage kids to look up and out the window every two chapters.

After completing a level in a video game, look out the window for 20 seconds.

Pre-mark books with a paperclip every few chapters to remind your child to look up. On an e-book, use the “bookmark” function for the same effect.

Avoid using a computer outside or in brightly lit areas, as the glare on the

screen can create strain.

Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer screen so that it feels comfortable to you.

Use good posture when using a computer and when reading.

Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.

Create a distraction that causes your child to look up every now and then.

Remind them to blink when watching a screen.

Poetry Contest Winners Celebrated at Reading Event

he Alfred Baumann Library in Woodland Park recently saluted the winners of its annual poetry contest at a reading event. The staff sends its thanks to all those that submitted poems.

Woodland Park Fifth Grader Featured for Charitable Efforts

BC News’ Lucy Yang and Emily Sowa recently featured an “In Our Backyard” segment on Woodland Park fifth grader Jayden Perez, who has been working to spread kindness since he was 8.

Jayden first started his charitable endeavors with a Christmas toy drive for children in Puerto Rico followed by helping people and animals in Puerto Rico and Florida affected by hurricanes.

“Everything I do is just repay and when people give to me, I repay with that,” he said on the news report.

His good work was also recently featured on a Good Morning America segment by Genevieve Shaw Brown.

Jayden has given motivational speeches on anti-bullying, served as a Kid Box ambassador, and he and his mother Ana Rosado were named “Hometown Heroes” by the Alfred Baumann Library last year.

The benevolent young man is also now the president of his own 501(3)c non-profit organization – “From The Bottom of My Heart.”

“Giving is the right thing to do. Giving is the best thing to do,” he said.

Jayden’s next charitable endeavor is collecting backpacks and school supplies for area children in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Alfred Baumann Library, 7 Brophy Lane, or mailed to: From The Bottom of My Heart, Attn: Jayden Perez, PO Box #115, Little Falls, NJ 07424.

The Fine Grind Celebrates 14th Anniversary

n June 15, The Fine Grind (TFG) celebrated 14 years of business in Little Falls with a fun filled birthday party at their location at 101 Newark Pompton Turnpike and everyone was invited! Town council members Maria Cordonnier, Al Kahwaty and Chris Vancheri were present to join in on the ceremonial cutting of the cake. A complimentary piece of chocolate or vanilla birthday cake was enjoyed by every guest while live music added to the festive atmosphere. Each year The Fine Grind celebrates its birthday by giving gifts to the customers because the owners, Rhonda & Jon Mallek, are very thankful for each and every customer for making TFG what it is today. This year’s gifts were limited-edition coffee mugs displaying The Fine Grind logo and the words “Little Falls, NJ” and “Wayne, NJ” commemorating the significance of 2019 being the last year that The Fine Grind had two locations.

Woodland Park Debuts RX Drop Box

he Woodland Park Police Department now offers a free, safe medication disposal drop box in its headquarters where the public can bring expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications 24/7.

Installed through the Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program, the convenient drop box allows residents to help reduce the chances of accidental or intentional misuse by disposing of medications in an environmentally-friendly manner.

Among adolescents, prescription and over-the-counter medications account for most of the commonly abused illicit drugs by high school seniors. Seventy percent of 12th graders said that prescription narcotics were given to them by a friend or relative for nonmedical use (NIDA, 2011).

In addition, prescription medications have become the leading cause of accidental childhood poisonings.

“The Woodland Park Police Depart-

ment is grateful to Rite Aid for implementing this program,” said Police Chief Eileen Tiernan. “Our residents now have a safe and convenient way of disposing their unwanted, unused or expired medication. Our Municipal Alliance Against Alcoholism and Drug Abuse has been asking to participate in this program for some time now.”

The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals such as pills, capsules, patches, inhalers, and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids.

By Warren Damiano he choice of whether to buy a new or an older home tends to be swayed by two very diverse considerations emotions and finances.

Some of us love older homes with their sense of history, charm and character and others are only truly happy with something that is brand new and has all the latest conveniences. No advice from outside will sway us from our emotional preferences and we should honor them. If this is to be your home, it should be the type of house you are most comfortable in.

If, on the other hand, you are looking at the choice of older versus newer with your primary motivation being financial, there are a few things to consider. New homes typically have lower maintenance costs, but that is frequently balanced by a higher

purchase price.

Of course, it is not just the costs of repairs and maintenance that we tend to look at but also the aggravation factor of dealing with them. Older homes can be a source of pride and joy for those of us who are handy and love to restore them but they can be a nightmare for those not so inclined.

New houses and very charming well built and maintained older homes tend to hold their value better than those houses that are neither new and convenient nor old and charming. Utility costs are one financial concern that can vary dramatically. Unless an older home has had insulation added to it at some point in its history, you can expect to pay much higher utility costs in an older home.

Ask your Realtor how much the present owners are paying for their utilities if you are looking at an older home.

Do Slow Golfers Ruin Your Day on the Course?

T

he average pace of play for a round of northern NJ golf: not very good!

Northern NJ golf courses are known for being overcrowded during peak tee times. And while you can’t control the crowds, there are a number of ways you can ensure that a good pace of play can be part of a great day at the links.

Finding a northern NJ golf course that offers a reasonable and consistent pace of play is critical to finding a club to call home.

Few things can disrupt an otherwise pleasant day of northern NJ golf like a round that meanders past five or six hours. After all, according to the USGA, a round should take just over four hours.

Fortunately, golfers have a number of tools and options to take control of their round and quicken their pace of play.

Several years ago, the management at Bowling Green Golf Club in Oak Ridge looked at every aspect of speeding up play and organized a program with one goal and one goal only: make golf more enjoyable by eliminating the long waits that are so typical at busy area courses.

At Bowling Green, everyone, from the head golf professional to the person who mows the grass, is completely committed to a pace of play that’s sensible without feeling hurried. A lot of courses in the area say they are committed to fast play, but only Bowling Green backs it up. The plan included widening some landing areas, taking out trees, and clearing undergrowth. The course also lengthened tee time intervals to ten minutes (they are typically six minutes at crowded area courses). This means

fewer golfers on the course and fewer golfers virtually eliminates delays (and improves conditioning).

At Bowling Green Golf Club, the pace rating for a foursome is 4 hrs. 15 min. Your place on the golf course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you.

A group is out of position if it: • is taking more than the scheduled time to play (see scorecard) and • reaches the teeing ground of a par 3 which is clear or; • fails to clear the teeing ground of a par 4 before the preceding group clears the putting green or; • arrives at the teeing ground of a par 5 when the preceding group is on the putting green.

Golfer Happiness: YES… Golfer Gridlock: NO!!!

Furthermore, course ownership constantly monitors the fast play program and ‘tweaks’ the plan as part of a commitment to improve pace of play even more. In fact, a GPS tracking system has been installed on each cart that allows the pro shop staff to see where every cart is located and if they are out of position regarding time. Starters and on-course assistants are completely “on-board” with the program. The starter starts groups at the appropriate time and the on-course assistants tactfully but firmly get slow groups to speed up. Chronically slow golfers will not enjoy Bowling Green – we ask them to leave and give them a refund. All of this helps ensure an enjoyable round for everyone.

Set up classroom visits before school starts. Sometimes fear comes from the unknown. By visiting ahead of time and seeing firsthand, your child can become familiar with the layout of the classroom, meet the teachers and know what to expect, which can help alleviate some of the anxiety and jitters.

Talk with your child’s teacher about the transition. Your child’s teacher should be your partner, so be open and honest from the start. Talk about how your child handles change, what causes stress or what behaviors the teacher might expect.

Don’t be afraid to call and ask for updates on your child to see how things are going. Set up regular check-ins over the next few weeks to talk about any additional support your child may need.

Avoid sneaking away from your child at drop-off. Talk about what will happen ahead of time and create a consistent and predictable drop-off ritual, such as two high-fives, a hug and a wave from the window, to ensure your child feels secure and safe. Continue this routine every day to help your child get used

to the classroom environment and make sure the process is a quick, happy one. While you’re typically welcome in most classrooms, lingering too long can make it harder on your child once you do leave.

Be enthusiastic. Just like laughter, excitement is contagious.

Rather than focus on nerves or uncertainty, share your own memories from school including how you felt at the beginning of a new school year and the excitement of learning and meeting new friends, which can help your child get hyped up, too.

Set up a work station at home. Creating a designated space at home for your little learner to do homework, read, write, draw and complete art projects can help set him or her up to develop good study habits. Stock this station with colored paper, crayons and markers, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, books, stickers and other necessary tools, and leave room for stowing a backpack. Encourage your child to spend time working on educational endeavors in the space each night.

How Much Exercise Does a Person Need?

xercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise helps people maintain healthy weights, improves mood, reduces the risk for various health ailments, and much more. But how much exercise is necessary for optimal health? Research indicates that the answer to that question depends on the person and his or individual health goals.

According to David Bassett, Jr., PhD, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, having a clear set of exercise goals can help a person determine just how much exercise he or she needs, particularly if a person is exercising to control his or her weight or reduce his or her stress.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends

that most healthy adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination thereof, every week. Try to engage in strength training for all major muscle groups at least two times per week. The Mayo Clinic says a general goal for most people is to aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day.

Health experts say that this exercise needn’t all occur at once, either.

If a 30-minute walk is not possible, split that up into a few 10-minute walks throughout the day. Any activity is better than doing nothing at all.

For those with specific fitness goals, it could be wise to speak with a trainer or a doctor about which types of exercises (and durations) are effective. Physicians may be able to map out a fitness plan that works.

Honor History and Its Lessons

he reasons for understanding the past are plentiful. Historical knowledge may illuminate the moments that shaped a loved one’s life or simply satisfy a curiosity about events and people that occupied a different place in time. A look into yesteryear can help make sense of the world today or even foreshadow happenings well into the future.

Whatever the basis for your interest in looking back in time, there are many ways you can honor and develop a deeper understanding of history. It’s just a matter of finding the method that fits your interests best.

Visit a museum or historical monument. These locations are rife with information, and often artifacts, that bring the past to life. You can find museums for all types of topics and interests, some with broad information about an event or subject and others that tell a story from a particular vantage point. Monuments offer a similar glimpse at the past, but they generally serve as physical markers of a particular place or event. This means you can stand exactly where the nation’s forefathers stood as they fought for liberation from British soldiers or take in the same sights as the pioneers who ventured west along a wagon trail.

Explore written accounts of history.

Historical books lend a diverse perspective on history, from factual accounts of times and places to personal narratives that let you experience exceptional moments through the eyes of someone who was there. For example, “Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington National Cemetery” from publisher Harper Collins paints an inspiring portrait of Arlington National Cemetery’s elite Old Guard unit, as well as telling the story of U.S. Senator Tom Cotton’s time as a platoon leader there.

America’s oldest active-duty regiment, dating back to 1784, The Old Guard conducts daily military honor funerals on the 624 rolling acres of Arlington. Readers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the honor and the challenges of duty at the nation’s most sacred shrine.

Let elders tell their tales. Though much of recent history is heavily documented, there’s no comparison to hearing firsthand how a person felt and thought as those historical moments unfolded. War stories, memories of childhood, tales from the first time driving a car – these are all experiences that looked very different a generation or two ago. Use special occasions and family gatherings to encourage the elders in your life to tell their stories and make notes or record those memories to cherish years into the future.

Research your family tree. No history is as personally relevant as your family tree.

Your ancestors hold the answers to exactly why you look like you do, and maybe even why you act certain ways. Online services make it easy to begin piecing together relations that date back generations.

Visit a cemetery. You may think of a trip to a cemetery as purely a chance to pay your respects to the departed. While visiting grave sites of loved ones you’ve lost and leaving flowers or other trinkets are common practices, you can also learn a great deal from a cemetery. Looking for surnames you recognize may alert you to members of your family tree you never knew or seeing dates etched in the stones may help you piece together bits of family history.

Digging into the past may be entertaining, insightful, inspiring or all of the above.
