MOPD Officers Adorn Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness

By Dawn M. Chiossi ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month and as such, there is a virtual sea of pink out there. Pink is the color of freshness, of youth, of vitality that has grown synonymous with glowing support for those battling breast cancer. According to statistics, it is estimated that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with this disease. In an attempt to raise awareness and funds for this important and widespread issue, Mt. Olive Police Officers are now wearing pink patches on their uniforms and vehicles this month of October, working in conjunction with The Pink Patch Project. This is the department’s third year participating in the program and according to Lt. Craig Austenberg, they started participating in July 2016 and began selling patches that October. Founded in May of 2016 in California, The Pink Patch Project is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and public safety agencies designed to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support essential research organizations to combat this disease. The program centers on the vibrant pink on the various officers’ uniform patches, designed to stimulate a dialogue with the community. It stresses the importance of early detection and the ongoing fight against breast cancer.
Even though the Pink Patch initiative is still young, it has swept over the country with many states participating. In the case of the MOPD, proceeds from its sales of patches, key rings and their new holiday ornaments will be going to the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, Integrative Medicine Oncology Fund.
