Celebrating Mount Olive Moms for Mother’s Day

By Steve Sears elcome to May in Mount Olive, and welcome to another celebration of Mother’s Day. Of course, every time a day dawns in this

lovely area is a day to honor the lovely Moms of Budd Lake and Flanders. So, Mount Olive Life pays tribute to a few of the township’s very worthy moms. (And for those not included in these pages, you’re all Queens, too – every day!)

Christine Pullara

hristine Pullara is a mom to Julianna, 22, and Dylan, 20.

She echoes what many first time-moms feel when pangs of motherhood are a reality. “I don’t think you are ever prepared for motherhood, but when I found out that I was having a baby I was absolutely thrilled.”

According to Pullara, motherhood helped her appreciate her parents more. “Absolutely, it gave me a great appreciation for everything my parents did for me. It gave me a whole different outlook on life.”.

In addition to her own mom, Pullara’s Godmother, her Aunt Jeanne, was an inspiration while she was growing up. “She was always there for me. I could talk to her about anything.”

Pullara, who was employed while raising her children, believes it is always a challenge with juggling children and a career.

“I do work; it was stressful trying to make sure that you were there for them and all their activities. But somehow it always worked out.” She adds, “I think the most challenging aspect was the stress of that they were always safe and that you have done your job as the parent to make sure they do the right thing.”

Pullara’s daughter, Julianna, is in the military, and that is definitely a concern for her. “There are many concerns. The most stressful one is that there is always that chance she will never come home. But I could not be any prouder of the woman she

has become.”

Her proudest moments are two: the days Julianna and Dylan were born. “It is really hard to pin point the proudest mom moment there are many. Both of my children make me very proud every day.”

eepa Balusamy celebrates Mother’s Day in a special way.

“My kids (Ragav, 13 and Adithi, 7) make breakfast for me, then we go out for lunch and they buy me some gifts and go bowling or some family activity and then we have dinner out and come home. Sometimes we might even go to some tourist spot and celebrate it.

It might be a very simple way of celebrating it, but the effort my family takes to make me happy makes it very special for me.”

“Honestly,” Balusamy says, “I was not prepared (to be a mom), but after it happened it was a miracle. It changed me because I think every woman feels complete after becoming a mom.”

Balusamy’s example of a good mom was her own mother. “My example and role model would be my

mom because I see the world through her eyes of kindness and humanity. I hope my daughter does the same.”

“It is very challenging because sorting the work life balance and making the kids happy is not easy,” she adds about the dilemma of juggling her work and life with her children. “At the end of day, their happiness is all that matters.”

The most important and challenging aspect of being a mother? “Making your kids understand and differentiate between good and bad and help them to succeed (in) their dreams.”

Like most moms, the most pride she feels in her children was the day of their birth. “My proudest Mom moment would be when happiness and pain together brought me to tears at the same time when I held my newborn son and daughter for the first time in the hospital. I would say that is a unique proud moment for every Mom.”

Melinda Humphrey

elinda Humphrey is mom to one daughter, Nicole, who is 46-years-old.

However, Humphrey also takes care of her 94-year-old mom.

“I never thought that after raising my own daughter, I would now be responsible for taking care of my own mom.

However, I believe that this is the “new norm”, where more and more children are becoming “caretakers” for their parent(s).” Her mom has been coping with Dementia (Alzheimer’s) for several years. “Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, at times feels like you’re taking care of a child. However, you have to treat them like the adult that they are and treat them with the courtesy and respect that they deserve. It’s a demanding and arduous job, but not an impossible one. I do occasionally get a break from caring for my mom. My brother, sister-in-law and I have set up a schedule, where we take turns caring for her. All things considered, it also helps to have a good sense of humor, and also try to remem-

ber the days when she took care of us.”

“With all the stress and challenges, the most fulfilling part is knowing that my mom is comfortable, happy and safe. I go to bed at night knowing that she’s had a good meal, she’s clean and well taken care of. My mom won’t always be here, so when she’s gone, I’ll be content knowing that I took very good care of her.”

Humphrey gave birth to her own daughter at age 20. “I was very fortunate however, because I had a lot of help from my own mom. Being a mother to eight children, she had lots of mom experience, and was of tremendous help to me.” And Nicole has been a huge source of pride for her mom. “When my daughter graduated college, when she received her master’s degree, her marriage,” Humphrey responds when asked about the high points, of which there are many. “But my proudest mom moment is the huge sense of pride I feel when I look at my daughter and realize what an amazing human being I have raised. Along with her many great qualities, my daughter is also a good person, she’s kind, honest, funny, smart, loyal and compassionate. It gives

Ayanna Santos yanna Santos is a new business owner (she’s the proprietor of Hand & Stone Massage & Facial Spa), is mom to two of her own children, a daughter Maraya Osson (10, almost 11), a son, Nathaniel Santos (2 ½), and an 11-year-old stepson, Ethan Santos.

“I’ve always worked since I had my daughter. Now with 3 children, it is definitely more challenging working, but it is doable. It requires a lot of coordination with my husband. Having a support network has also been extremely helpful. My mother, my motherin-law, my neighbors and friends in the area, all play a critical role in raising children when working. It really does take a village. The most important thing is making sure that we have good quality time with the children where they feel loved and supported.”

Santos was, in her words, “very prepared” to be a mom, and that role has changed her profoundly. “My husband and I made a conscious decision that we were ready to raise children. I also watched every episode of “A Baby Story” so I was an expert by the time I had my daughter. I was very engaged in becoming a parent so I just took in everything that I could.”

“Motherhood has changed me in a profound way. I have a driven, go-getter personality. Once I had my daughter almost 11 years ago, my drive to provide for her and be present for her increased.

Today my children still drive me to do all I can to provide a loving stable environment today and a supportive environment for the future.”

Santos met stepson, Ethan, and her then-future husband, Ray, when she took Maraya to the park. “We all kind of met at the park, which is kind of cool. My daughter started playing with this little boy and then the dad and I met, and we wound up staying at the

park for five hours. That was the beginning.”

“It was hard in the beginning,” she recalls regarding being a stepmom. “My daughter was used to me, and I had been a single parent at that point for four years. He’s (Ethan) learning how to interact with me, and I’m learning how to interact with him. There were growing pains in the beginning. I still think we both do, to be honest; it’s going to be a continuous learning experience, but the thing that I think is most important is that I don’t treat any of my children any differently. I love him, he and my daughter

have the best relationship, and the baby and he have a fabulous relationship, so he’s my son.”

Like Ayanna, her mom, Mary, worked a job while being a true example of a wonderful mother. “She is a retired Nurse Practitioner and was a professor of nursing. She was always there for my brothers and I, while she continued to better herself and take on opportunities to further her career. It was that example that showed me how furthering my career can have a profound impact on my children from a role model perspective, but also for the ability to provide for the family.”

Santos admits that being a mom and parenting in general is a learning experience. “The most challenging aspect of being a

mom is that I don’t always get it right.

I learn everyday while parenting my children. There are days I have to phone a friend, for a ‘How do I handle this?’ conversation.

Parents aren’t perfect. The most important aspect is to never stop learning and stay open to adjusting to the personality of the child.”

She adds, “Everything I do now, I think, ‘I want my children to grow up and be productive members of society, but I also want them to be happy, and know how to find happiness in their life based on how they treat other people based on the things they do for joy, how they interact with family. Everything is now about, ‘How do I teach them through my life while loving them and allowing them to have a great life along the way?’”

New Mt Olive Fitness Studio Features Therapeutic ‘Salt Cave’

Since 2014, Nicolich had a vision to build a studio. She wanted a place for individuals to come, feel empowered, feel a sense of accomplishment, feel more alive. “I envisioned the studio as a community hub, more like a home away from home for the community,” she says.

The Salt Cave is a calming space all its own. Nicolich added the cave for its respiratory benefits, its soothing detox effects on the mind and body, and as a tranquil space to unwind after a rigorous workout. “If we can breathe better, we will perform better, and we will think better, and we will be calmer. It’s about achieving a peaceful state of being.” Nicolich advises.

The healing powers of salt have been known since ancient times. From the Dead Sea to the Himalayan salt mines, the mineral’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties were a prized commodity. Ancient Egyptians used salt as a cure. Even the Greek physician Hippocrates, the father of medicine, pre-

scribed salt water for breathing ailments.

The modern concept of Dry Salt Therapy, also known as halotherapy (“halo” is Greek for salt), began in the salt caves of Poland in 1843. A Polish doctor, Feliks Boczkowski, observed that his patients who worked in the salt mines had vastly superior respiratory health, compared with other miners. The doctor later turned his cave into a clinic.

A hundred years later, a German doctor, Karl Hermann Spannagel, noticed his patients’ health improving after they hid out in salt caves to avoid heavy bombing during WWII. Speleotherapy (“respiratory cave therapy”) was born. Today salt rooms are common throughout Eastern Europe, Russia and Canada.

The Mt. Olive Recreation Department Provides Year-Round Fun for the Whole Family

By Melissa A. Kay assion about the benefits of recreation and a genuine enjoyment for bringing the community together makes the Mt. Olive Recreation Department staff smile. Director of Marketing, Liz Meininger, was eager and enthusiastic to share her sentiments about the vibrant department, from her personal pride in what they do from day to day to the many perks offered to the residents of Mt. Olive and the surrounding areas. “Experience, enthusiasm, dedication, and a healthy helping of fun describes our culture,” says Meininger.

With seemingly endless things to see, do, explore, and more, the Mt. Olive Recreation Department is always planning ahead to be sure the upcoming season is even better than the last. And when it comes to keeping things fresh, family-friendly, and fun, the entire Recreation Department team does their part in providing the Mt. Olive area with an overflow

of activities and attractions.

In order to keep things running smoothly and successfully, the Mt. Olive Recreation Department team not only works with one another internally but branches out into the community to form mutually beneficial partnerships and garner support.

Meininger explains, “We enjoy a wonderful relationship with almost 200 local businesses and entrepreneurs. The Recreation Department works closely with the Department of Public Works concerning park improvements and events, and recycling initiatives/promotion. We coordinate with all the township departments for events and activities and are grateful for their help. We are actively involved with the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association, participating in workshops, conferences, mentoring programs, and more.”

To get to the place the Recreation Department is at now, it is important to note the rich history of how it all came about. The department was developed in 1975 by

Today, Jill Daggon serves as Recreation Supervisor. Meininger describes Daggon’s role, “As the department head, she hopes to inspire her team, researches and implements best practices and policies for all aspects of recreation, selects and trains the summer staff, plans department budgets, and proudly wears a T-shirt that proclaims, ‘I have a spread sheet for that!’ She meets with new program providers and reviews proposals. Jill also works with the nine sports associations that provide instructional and travel sports programs, and liaises with a variety of committees and township initiatives. She also does whatever is needed by the recreation staff, so they can do their best.” Busy as expected, but thrilled to be in charge of such a generous gift to Mt. Olive and its residents. Along with Meininger, Assistant Director of Marketing Bill Caldarola, and Recreation Assistant Corey Kozimor, as well as others who provide their services to keep the Recreation Department running, Daggon’s work is highly acclaimed and endlessly appreciated by those who make the most of all the department brings to the Mt. Olive community.

Thankfully and deservedly, as of 2009, Meininger explains, “The Recreation Department is self-supporting and sustaining, through programming, sponsorships, and donations. The Mt. Olive Pool is a prime place to cool off come summertime.

Meininger gives some detail, “Mt. Olive Pool at Centercourt is a public – private partnership established in 2018, which won the League of Municipalities Innovation in Governance Award. The main pool is heated and is a modified ‘Z’ shape. Separate from the main pool, the baby pool has a zero depth entry ramp with a maximum depth 26”.

This pool also features two interactive spray areas. The property also includes a picnic area, concession stand, 100+ lounge chairs, and a sand volleyball court. This year, pool members will have access to the outdoor tennis courts too.”

As if the pool area isn’t enough water fun for Mt. Olive area folks, Pirates Cove Splashpad takes splashing around to the next step. Meininger sums it up, “Pirates Cove Splashpad is an all-abilities water playground with 18 spray features, including the giant 90 gallon SuperSplash bucket. The area also includes a shade pergola and some seating. We we also offer picnic tables with umbrellas, and a gazebo area which can be rented for parties and gatherings.”

The Mt. Olive Recreation Department is doing more than its share to make the area even more amazing than it already is, and the devoted department team loves what they do and who they do it for. “We are so glad we are in a community that cares for each other and loves coming together to have fun in so many different ways,” says Meininger. “We try to focus on providing a great experience.” Mt. Olive residents will attest to the fact that the Recreation Department is doing just that…and then some.

Those worship times coincide with the five obligatory prayers that Muslims must make each day. If possible, members come to the mosque for prayer. However, since many work or are at school, they pray there.

By Elsie Walker mam Jawad Ahmed remembers a time when he was “kind of lost in the wilderness”. He’d always been a faithful Muslim, but something was missing, a connection to God. He had a spiritual change in college, which ultimately led him to study theology. As the spiritual leader of the Islamic Society of North Jersey (ISNJ), Ahmed wants to help children, youth, and adults to realize a connection with God. Located on Route 46 in Mt. Olive, the ISNJ is based on the Sunni (sect) faith. Saima Mehboob of Mt. Olive, the ISNJ’s Treasurer and Communications Lead, shared how the ISNJ came to be. “Around 1999, a group of seven – eight Muslim families came together in the Budd Lake area to worship and build ties. The Islamic Society of North Jersey (ISNJ) was formally established in 2006 with 75 members. We have grown to 200+ members,” Mehboob said.

Ahmed is a relatively new addition to the ISNJ, coming to it in November 2018. However, he has been an Imam since 2000.

He explained what an Imam is. “Imam is like the spiritual leader of the community, providing comfort and solace with religious education, and leads the community in prayers to God,” he said.

Ahmed had originally come to this country to study engineering and later switched to chemistry. It was during college that he felt a spiritual change that would change the direction of his life.

He graduated college and started working for a pharmaceutical company. However, he ended up leaving that to study theology in Pakistan. He was ordained and commissioned in 2000. He has served other Muslim communities in New Jersey and New York, before coming to the ISNJ. However, he is not a stranger

to the Muslims at the ISNJ, as he had been a guest Imam, coming there to speak for many years. Ahmed is married with four children and lives in Hackettstown.

Mehboob shared about the timing of prayers during the day.

“Morning Prayer (Fajr) is right before sunrise. Afternoon Prayer (Zuhr) is usually mid-day. Late afternoon Prayer (Asr) is a couple of hours before the sunset prayer, Maghrib. Sunset prayer (Maghrib) is at sunset and Night prayer (Isha) is a couple of hours after the sunset prayer, Maghrib,” she explained Ahwad added that,” On Fridays, the Imam gives a sermon before prayer at noon time for the weekly congregation prayer called ‘Friday prayer’ which all members must attend to pray collectively to God.” During worship, men and women sit in different areas. Mehbood explained why there is a separation. “Islam is a strong advocate of the family environment and modesty. Non-related women and men are not expected to socialize or worship in close quarters. In the group setting or worship, or jamaat, you will see individuals standing in a line, or siffat, behind the Imam and following him in prayer. Men form standing rows immediately behind the Imam, and women are in standing rows behind the men. This isn’t because men are perceived to be bet-

ter than women. Rather, it is so that each can concentrate on their prayers…”

The ISNJ helps Muslims grow in faith through educational opportunities for children and adults. “Our key contribution to the local Muslim community is our Sunday School,” said Mehboob. Mehboob noted that they have a dedicated volunteer staff of about 20 people; that includes committed teachers, principal, and administration. Currently, 120 students are registered, ranging in age from kindergarten to 10th grade. A three-hour session is held every Sunday, during which students learn Quran (the Islamic sacred book), Arabic, and Islamic Studies.

In addition, there are fee-based Quran lessons offered throughout the week, with separate sessions for boys, girls, and women. Mehboob noted that those are driven by community need. The ISNJ also hosts free lectures which include Sister (women only) sessions. Information on those is posted on the society’s website at www.isnj.net/.

Outreach is also part of the life of the ISNJ, with the youth actively involved. “ISNJ will provide financial support on a needs

basis to either individuals or organizations. Also, our youth group has volunteered with Bread of Life at Newton Presbyterian Church, ICNA Relief (Muslims for Humanity), and handed out free hot meals outside Masjid Al Wali in Edison.” Bread of Life, in which they were joined by youth from Trinity United Methodist Church, is a mission offering food and fellowship to those in need. During warm months, meals are distributed in Memorial Park in Newton. ICNA Relief helps those underserved populations across this country.

Mehboob also noted that the ISNJ youth hosted an art fair and used the proceeds to purchase 100 items that were then donated to a soup kitchen.

Mehboob noted that empowering the youth at the ISNJ is important. “We actively coach and guide our youth members to lead as young Muslim Americans. You may have heard about the petition Haashem Akhtar initiated in Mt Olive for students to have Eid (a Muslim holiday) off as a school holiday,” shared Mehboob.

plained that Ramadan is a 30-day fasting period during which Muslim focus on gratitude for how much they have, like enough to eat and good health. The fast reminds them of hardships that others face. Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, having nothing to eat or drink until after dusk. The Imam said it is similar to Lent.

Eid is a time of celebration. Muslims dress in their best clothes; there is a service (outdoors if the weather is good). They exchange gifts and visit each other. Currently, Eid is not a religious holiday for which school is closed, like the religious holidays of other faiths. Muslim students are allowed excused absences to be out of school on that day. However, that means that they may miss a test or certain lessons that have to be made-up. Having the holiday off (when it falls on a school day, it follows the lunar calendar) would change that. That is what is trying to be done with the petition. Mehboob shared that already Muslim students at Mt Olive High School have collaborated with the school administration to be excused for Friday prayers, which they offer together

in the school.

The ISNJ holds a family night once a month for its members. A guest speaker is invited to provide a faithbased lecture, followed by a potluck dinner. Mehboob noted that the turnout is usually 20 to 25 families.

Currently, the society is focused on fundraising and finding a property to meet its community’s growing needs.

Mehboob explained that during Friday prayers, they can have more than 200 people in attendance.

The ISNF is a member of the Mt. Olive Inter-faith Alliance with the United Presbyterian Church, Flanders, and Abiding Peace Lutheran Church in Budd Lake. “The Alliance is a commitment by our three faith communities, and any other residents of the greater Mt. Olive area who are interested, to build relationships, increase interfaith understanding, and work together to promote the good and the larger community,” explained Rev. Serena Rice, pastor of the Lutheran church.

Rice explained the role the ISNF has played in the alliance.

Comfort Zone Camp: A Place for Grieving, Healing, and Growing

“I felt very alone, isolated, and different from everyone else my age,” says Pereira.

“Going to Comfort Zone Camp helped me learn and understand that I was not alone and never will be in my grief journey.”

By Steve Sears ikki Russo, 25, painfully recalls that day when she was 11-years-old.

Her dad had suffered a number of health ailments, and after a scheduled surgery to improve circulation in his legs was deemed successful, two days later he died from a massive heart attack.

“My mom and I are very close now, but me and my dad just got each other.” Russo says. “We could just look at each other and know what each other were thinking. So, when I didn’t have that anymore, it was like a piece of my heart was taken away from me.

I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have anyone to talk to. When my dad was sick, I would walk to my bus stop every morning – it was like a rite of passage as a 6th grader, you could walk to the bus stop by yourself – and I would call him every morning. I couldn’t talk to him anymore; it was depressing. It was such a numbing experience that I don’t even remember the first year.”

Katie Pereira, who is 24 years old, lost her dad, Franco Lalama, who was killed as he was helping folks exit the World Trade Center during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. She was just seven years old. “As a result of my dad’s death,” says Pereira, “I was very angry and did not know how to deal with all of the emotions that

came with grief.”

Both discovered Comfort Zone Camp, a bereavement group for young people, and it worked wonders for both. “It was the first time I really cried talking to somebody about it,” claims Russo, a Union City elementary school teacher. “That was the first time I told people my story and really talked about it. It was very beneficial to me and my mom. I always say that Comfort Zone Camp saved me and my mom’s relationship, and I generally believe it saved my life, because I was going down a very bad, destructive path.”

“I felt very alone, isolated, and different from everyone else my age,” says Pereira. “Going to Comfort Zone Camp helped me learn and understand that I was not alone and never will be in my grief journey.” An Operations Specialist with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, she also adds, “Comfort Zone helped me understand my emotions that I was feeling and helped me cope with my loss in a healthy way. I was very angry as a result of my dad’s death so being able to learn how to cope with my emotions at a young age helped shape who I am now.”

Lynne Hughes founded Comfort Zone Camp in 1998, seven years before she wrote You Are Not Alone, a bereavement book for teens. Camp is currently held primarily in five states: Vir-

ginia, Florida, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and California. “My parents died when I was young; my mom died when I was 9, and my dad when I was 12,” says Hughes.

“I went to summer camp after my parents died and I loved it. Then, I always wanted to be a camp counselor after I graduated, and then I went to Michigan State when I was in college, and I found a camp outside of Michigan, and then I found one in the Poconos which was co-ed, and then I met someone who suggested we start our own camp.”

Hughes was aware that there were no resources for grieving kids, not when she was a child and also when she entered adulthood. The awareness and her experience in camp as a child and then camp counselor encouraged her to combine both into a resource for youngsters who suffered from loss of a sibling or parent.

Comfort Zone Camp filled and still fills the void. “Grieving kids grow up in isolation, they might be the only ones in their school or community. When they show up and they meet 60 or 70 other kids at a camp

and they visually drink in that message, ‘Gosh, I’m not alone; we’re all here for the same reason,’ it almost frees them up to step outside of their loss to get back to being a kid again.” Comfort Zone Camp has activities to allow kids to grieve, tell their stories, and teaches them skills that will help them in everyday life. The camp is open to individuals ages 7 to 25.

dren who attended the camps in 2001 now serve as “big buddies” at our camps. Eventually, we hosted many camps in the New York/ New Jersey area for any child who had suffered the loss of a parent or sibling.”

Pereira, who is originally from New Jersey and now lives in North Carolina with her husband, has been involved with the camp since 2001, first as a camper, then a junior counselor, and now Big Buddy and volunteer. “It feels great to be able to give back to a place that gave me my life back.”

Russo herself has attended Comfort Zone camp 25 times. “In the beginning in New Jersey, they would let campers go more than once a year. Once it became more popular and well known, I could only go once a year. Then I started volunteering as a counselor so that I could go to every camp.”

“Many of our adult volunteers suffered a loss when they were a child,” adds Decter. “They always say that they wished there was something like Comfort Zone Camp when they were young. While the volunteers are there to support the children, they are also af-

forded the opportunity to talk about their loved ones and share the ways in which their loss influenced who they are today.

The bond between little buddies and big buddies is extraordinary, and many of the friendships carry on beyond camp. One of my first little buddies was a 7-yearold boy named Tyler, who lost his dad on 9/11. He and I were paired together at camps for almost 10 years. I would visit him and his family from time-to-time and felt a responsibility to be a part of his life. At our most recent New Jersey camp, Tyler, who is now 25 years old, and I volunteered as big buddies together. I watched with such pride and felt like things had come full circle watching him be there for his little buddy.”

Per Pereira, Comfort Zone Camp is a “truly magical place.”

“You walk into your first camp wondering how it will be, but then when the weekend is over you don’t want to leave. The weekend is set up like a summer camp feel, but everything you do that weekend relates to grief in some way. I took everything

I learned about grief and use those learnings in other aspects of life. When someone asks how you can explain Comfort Zone Camp, one word always comes to mind, and that is “bubble.”

Comfort Zone Camp is a bubble. You enter into it and you get to be in that moment for the whole weekend and nothing else in your world matters that moment. Camp helps you cope with your death that you experienced in your life, but then you also learn how to cope with other losses that you may encounter throughout life. When one of your loved ones passes away you can also sometimes lose other things that relate to that loss.”

Pereira offers the following to those who are not yet ready to share the feelings. “I would say that you do not have to share if you are not ready to. Sometimes you don’t have to say anything to get everything that you need to help cope with your loss, but I would encourage everyone to attend a camp weekend because just being there in the camp bubble will help you cope and help guide you with your grief.”

As previously noted by Russo, volunteers – aka “Big Buddies” – benefit as much as those they are aiding. “Absolutely,” agrees Hughes. “Every time you listen to how someone feels, every time you tell someone how you feel, whether you’re a child or an adult mentoring somebody, it gives it purpose and meaning as to why this adversity happened to you, so when you get to give that purpose and meaning to it, give back and pay it forward, it helps them to navigate their grief journey, and potentially make it easier for your own, it’s very rewarding.”

“It helps you stay connected to your own loved one, too.”

Decter agrees. “The most important benefit of Comfort Zone Camp is that the children who attend our camps learn that they are not alone in their grief journey. Many children report that they don’t like to talk about their loss when they are at school because they feel different and alienated. At camp, they are surrounded by other kids and volunteers who have experienced something similar to what they went through.”

Comfort Zone Camp is held on the weekends all year round.

Sign-up is done via the camp website by creating an account and profile, selecting a camp date, and then there is a screening process after sign-up. Comfort Zone Camp is free to all children. Activities are the same at all camps but could vary by time of the year.

There is time for all-around kids fun, buy also time for breaking the attendees down by age into groups and placing them into grief support circles, which are called “healing circles,” led by a healing circle leader who is a mental health professional. Discussed are stories, feelings, grief in the body, how things have changed at home, talk about different skills, and more. “We know,” says Hughes, “we’re not going to cure or fix everything up during the course of the weekend, but what tools can we give them to help

them navigate their day-to-day grief journey, as well as kind of prepare them for big milestones?” Examples are graduations and the like, but also preparing for not taking part in a Father/Daughter Dance for the first time. There are limited travel scholarships offered, so prospective attendees are directed to camps close to their home.

“I am incredibly proud of my affiliation with Comfort Zone and it has been such a pleasure to see the positive results of many children who I have watched grow up,” says Decker. “We teach them that their grief journey never ends, it just becomes different over time. I hope that Comfort Zone Camp continues to grow so that we can continue to support children who should never feel like they are alone. “ Speaking of ‘grow”, volunteers (who are trained) are welcome, as are donations. Hughes says there are kids on a waiting list, so the goal is to get them off the list and into more camps.

That, and camps of longer duration, are the goal. Decter adds, “Comfort Zone Camp is free to all families. Therefore, fundraising and corporate sponsorship are what allow us to serve as many grieving children as possible. The more money we are able to raise, the more children can attend camp. Right now, we have three camps scheduled in New Jersey for 2019 -- next year we would love to double that. In addition, we are always looking for people to serve as big buddies. You do not have to had suffered a loss or have any professional experience. Instead, you can attend a training session and learn about what it means to serve as a big buddy.”

Hughes speaks to the benefit of her founded, very worthwhile 501 (c) 3. “Comfort Zone Camp is important because kids break their isolation, get back to being a kid again, and get the opportunity to have the peace of their healing. We literally see kids blossom, grow, and heal right in front of our eyes. And there’s nothing more powerful and humbling than being a part of that.”

That is something both Russo and Pereira can attest to. “It’s still a rescue for me,” says Russo. “I get choked up just talking about it,” she continues through tears. “I have a boyfriend, and I wish my dad was here now to meet him, talk to him, because I know they would get along. Just going to camp as a Big Buddy now is my saving grace. I get to give advice and talk to kids, it’s really a nice experience.”

Pereira adds, “Comfort Zone Camp changed my life. I do not know how I would have been able to cope and deal with my dad’s death if I did not have the support system of my camp family. I grew up with Comfort Zone Camp and I am forever grateful to them for changing my life and showing me that I am not alone.”

NJStarz Kendall Cornine Hometown: Kinnelon, NJ

By Melissa A. Kay he National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) has only been in existence since 2015, but when it comes to people’s passion for the sport, the few years seem like lifetimes. Founded and led by women, with 100 players now part of the program, women from all around the world are interested and involved, taking what they have learned, loved, and longed for to the ice…finally. With a loyal base, new fans flocking to see games and follow the sport on social media, and go-getter girls who now get to grow up watching their role models make history, the NWHL - the first pro women’s hockey league in North America - is creating a wave of women-powered puck-slapping action. While it took much longer to come to life than hockey fans had in mind, there’s no time like the present to celebrate.

And speaking of celebrating, one young woman who is taking the sport by storm and is already heading towards success is 22-year-old Kendall Cornine, of Kinnelon. Her athletic talents and drive make her a standout, something the NWHL noticed and needed. A 2015 graduate of Morristown Beard School and currently a college student at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, Cornine has been playing hockey since the

tender age of five. And it is not lost on her that the NWHL was established the very year she graduated high school.

Coincidence or a calling? For teens who often question what their future holds as they set foot into “the real world,” surely Cornine had her sights set on one day being part of a women’s hockey team – something that was not even a blip on the radar when she first stepped onto the ice as an active little girl. She never imagined she would have the opportunity to make a career in hockey, “…but the women’s game has grown tremendously,” she excitedly explains.

The promise of landing a job based on one’s passion is not something everyone can count on. But Cornine is counting her blessings.

Although she put in years of patience and practice, “Around my freshman year of high school I realized I had a special talent,” Cornine shared. The four years in high school took that gift to a new plateau, soon impressing the powers that be at the NWHL. “I was drafted on December 20th (2018) in the second round and was ecstatic.” Naturally, Cornine is “extremely grateful for the opportunity.” As for her family and friends? “They are all really happy, proud, and excited for me,” she beams.

Surely the folks from her hometown of Kinnelon are equally in awe of Cornine’s noteworthy accomplishment, proving

a hometown girl can go places.

So, what’s in store for the superstar athlete? She is still in school in New York, but come August, seasonal training will be underway and grueling at that. Onand off-ice training, and plenty of practice, practice, practice will be Cornine’s new normal, but with her lifelong love for hockey, getting fitter, faster, and more focused is sure to be lots of fun. She was selected by the team in New Jersey – the Metropolitan Riveters - so upon graduation, Cornine will be happily headed back home for a family reunion as well as a rigid regimen. The other teams in the NWHL are Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, and Connecticut Whale, rounding out the “Founding Four” franchises, as well as the Minnesota Whitecaps.

The hockey season runs from October through March, so those few months leading up to the first games will require stamina, strength, and plenty of sweat, not to mention support from friends, family, and her new teammates. But Cornine is more than ready for the challenge. “The speed and competition of the game and the people it has brought me close to,” are what pushes her to persist.

“Dedication and passion for the game” gets Cornine pumped up and ready for realizing her dreams.

She is only 22, but Cornine is already encouraging girls and young women to pursue their sports-based aspirations just like she has. It can be trying and tough to get to her level, but Cornine advises, “Stick with it; do not let anyone take your passion for (the sport) from you.” Her “If you don’t succeed, try, try again” mentality is exactly the state of mind she must exist in, whether it is during a practice session or a big game. Every moment makes a difference – there is no time to even think about throwing in the towel when there is a team counting on every player to put her best foot forward. But Cornine has no issue with keeping her

head held high and her confidence soaring. And she anticipates great things to come for the future of the NWHL. “I hope that (the NWHL) only continues to grow and become as popular as men’s. I hope it gives women the opportunity to make a career out of playing professional hockey.” Fans of the sport couldn’t agree more.

While hockey obviously stands out as Cornine’s core obsession, she does find time to dabble in other interests as well. “I’m very passionate about health and fitness.

I enjoy competing in triathlons and exercising in general. I also enjoy cooking and spending time at the beach.” And as far as any special diet to keep her hockey game (and her physique) on point… “I just make sure whatever I’m eating is right for my body,” she says. Simple, but smart.

And smart is just what Cornine, as well as all the NWHL players embody. All NWHL players are college graduates. As per the NWHL, “On the rosters of NWHL teams are teachers, medical professionals, engineers, financial analysts, coaches and trainers, marketing and communications executives, and entrepreneurs.” Since practices are held at night and the games are generally played on weekends, the women in the league can have the best of both worlds. Along with these successful professional women, the NWHL has seen United States National Team Players as well as Olympic stars join their teams on the ice. These women are inspirational, exceptional, and are showing the world it’s about time women’s hockey is held in high regard. Cornine is a perfect example of such excellence, and she’s just getting started.

The 10-mile, 45-minute round trip excursion from Whippany to Roseland and return is a thrill for the children as they enjoy what for many, will be their very first train ride...and they can also learn about and experience the history of New Jersey’s rich railroad and transportation heritage. Passengers can combine the thrill of riding the train along with touring the Museum site, featuring its outstanding collection of historic railroad locomotives, rolling stock, operating model train layouts and vintage farm tractors.

The train ride is part of the Museum’s operating heritage railroad excursions and travels the route of the historic ‘Whippanong Trail’ through Whippany, East Hanover, Livingston and Roseland in Morris and Essex Counties. The train passes through the remnants of pre-historic Glacial Lake Passaic, a natural swamp which supports abundant wildlife, such as deer, turtles, wild turkeys, hawks and rabbits.

In addition to the antique cabooses that make up the train, visitors can upgrade their excursion experience by choosing to ride in our elegantly-restored 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) ‘Club Car’ Jersey Coast. The car has the look and feel of a private club with individual leather chairs, mahogany interior accented with stained glass, built-in tables and period ceiling fans. The Jersey Coast recalls the 1930›s when the CNJ operated its deluxe coach train, The Blue Comet between Jersey City and Atlantic City, NJ. The striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space. It is the only car of its type operating in New Jersey.
