o prepare the All Veterans Memorial for the upcoming Memorial Day program, the JROTC Airforce and Harold’s landscaping volunteered their time. Retired Chief Master Sgt. Robert S. Bedell of the U.S. Air Force, says “It is a great privilege for these cadets to be able to give back to their community in such a tangible way through the AVM.” The JROTC Airforce built the sandbag wall as part of the Veterans Remembrance Wall. The sandbags, specially formulated and packaged concrete, was donated by Quikcrete, in Flanders. “It was an extremely generous donation,” says AVM Founder Charlie Wood Uhrmann. Poppies Grow Throughout Mt. Olive As Volunteers Bloom Everywhere
P
oppies are blooming everywhere thanks to hundreds of volunteers from teachers, and Mt. Olive school faculty to Girl Scouts. More than 350 handmade poppies were contributed to the All Veteran’s Memorial at Turkey Brook Park in Budd Lake to go on the Veteran’s Remembrance Wall. “We were invited by the principals,” says AVM Founder Charlie Wood Uhrmann. From Feb. 26 through March 26, more than 300 teachers and faculty from the Mt. Olive Middle School, Sandshore, Tinc Road and Chester M. Stephens elementary schools took some time to make poppies. “Superintendent Larrie Reynolds made the arrangements,” says Uhrmann, who was most grateful for his support. “This provided us an opportunity to share the educational components of the AVM with the teachers,” she says. “I would guess that more than 90 percent of the teachers did not know the AVM was an educational complex. Several have expressed a desire to take field trips to the park and take advantage of the tours available. We have several field trips/tours scheduled before Memorial Day.” The AVM, a unique ceremonial ground, is the host to historically denoted military ceremonies and vigils. Visitors of all ages come to learn about American history and
to pay their respects to those who honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces. School leaders were pleased to participate. “Ann Carlson contacted us regarding this opportunity,” says MOMS Principal Susan M. Breton. “Our staff was thrilled to participate in a program that was dedicated to our veterans in our community.” Approximately 85-90 teaching staff and administrators made the poppies during the MOMS faculty meeting on Feb 26 in the MOMS cafeteria. “It was fabulous to see the amount of excitement and willingness of our staff to support the Mt. Olive community, even outside of school,” says Breton. “Charlie the woman who came in to facilitate was really informative. Gave everyone background and the staff were happy to participate. We would love to do it again.” Nicole Musarra, principal of Sandshore Elementary School, says “we were all happy to participate.” About 50 staff members gathered in the school library during its faculty meeting on March 12. “The workshop was enjoyable,” says Musarra. “Some of our classes are going to the memorial at Turkey Brook as a follow up to tie into our Social Studies curriculum.” Kevin Moore, principal at CMS says, continued on page 21
