Thankful Family Hosts End Of Treatment Celebration For Community

By Lisa McNamara ollin Berg could be spotted wearing an orange hat and t-shirt with the word warrior written on them during his “End of Treatment Celebration” on June 23 at Mt. Olive High School, Flanders. The event was given by the Berg family to thank the community for all their support during Berg’s treatment to battle leukemia which ended on June 20. “It was important for me to have a way to say thank you to all the people in the community and beyond for all their support throughout my journey,” says Berg. “The celebration was my family’s way of saying thank you. It was really nice to see everyone and be able to thank them in person.” Berg endured 988 days of treatment like a true warrior, but Berg’s whole life could be seen as a battle. “Sadly this is not Collin’s first rodeo,” says Theresa Berg, Collin’s mother, “he suffered a stroke in utero and was born with congenital hydrocephalus and hemiparetic cerebral palsy. Cancer was just another bump in the road he took on with grace.” Berg, just 16 years old, has already overcome so many challenges, but what might be even more impressive is his positive and optimistic outlook. His mother explained that when she’s down, Collin will often be the one to fortify her with words

of encouragement and remind her that they’ll get through this. With help from the community, they did get through this, but the family also wanted to continue to pay it forward to the Valerie Treatment Center in the Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center as well. The family asked for donations of gift cards to replenish the supply that is given out to older children receiving
treatment at the center. This was optional and Theresa Berg was pleased that $2,920 was collected in gift cards, cash and checks. “The Valerie Center is an outpatient clinic that treats kids with cancer and blood disorders,” she says. “The team is made up of the most amazing and compassionate people.” The celebration was a success thanks continued on page 2

Berg is a remarkable teenager and there was no shortage of praise and kind words to describe him. “He’s brave and endured so many ups and downs and always has a positive attitude,” says Jackie Guenther, a friend from Sarah’s Fight For Hope
Foundation. “What a strong kid. I’m just so happy for him,” says Joe Byrnes, a close family friend, who fought emotion as he greeted Berg’s mother during the event. “He’s an angel; he comes from heaven,” boasts Berg’s grandmother, Norina Faraci. “He never complains. There are no words to explain the kind of boy he is.” “Since the day he was born, he’s been a fighter and defied all odds,” says Theresa Berg. “He takes on every challenge with a smile and determination that is really unmatched. Mt. Olive Students Compete In International Underwater Robotics Competition

By Bethany Zorn t. Olive High School (MOHS) students traveled to Federal Way, Washington last month to compete in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) International Competition. The Mt. Olive MATE team competed in various underwater robotics tasks and was required to market and pitch their very own product as part of the competition. The team received an overall ranking of 15th and was awarded the “Aloha Team Spirit Award.” Among the team members are four seniors, Garrison Case, Damon Johnson, Erin Perry, and Katie Weatherwax, who chose to forgo their high school graduation ceremony to attend the international competition. At first I was hesitant to miss graduation, but once I broke it down the answer became easy,” said MOHS Senior Damon Johnson. “I could either go to a ceremony, although very memorable, to receive the diploma I was already going to get, or help represent Mt. Olive with a team I’ve come to consider family in just six months time. I’m glad I made the decision I had.”
Johnson explained that the MATE league creates a synthetic market gap and calls upon companies to fill that gap, making the team operate more like a real company. “Our company name is Loggerhead ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), named after the Loggerhead sea turtle,” said Johnson. “Every year we adopt a turtle in a rehabilitation center and name that year’s ROV after the turtle. This year’s ROV is named Tammy.”
Loggerhead ROV, led by David Bodmer, a teacher at MOHS, is comprised of students and mentors who are excited about marine technology, innovation, engineering, and environmental protection. “I am extremely proud of our students’ performance and professionalism throughout the competition,” said Bodmer. “Today’s students are inheriting some very serious problems and we need innovators and continued on page 8

Former Mt. Olive Student Returns To District To Run MOMS As Principal

By Cheryl Conway tudents, teachers and faculty at Mt. Olive Middle School in Budd Lake will be greeted by a new leader come September when they start their next school year. Matt Robinson, 35, of Netcong, has been hired by the Mt. Olive Board of Education to serve as the new MOMS principal. With a starting date for August 13, he will be replacing Susan Breton who will continue in the district but as the director of curriculum and instruction. Having had attended Mt. Olive schools throughout his youth, Robinson looks forward to returning home but as a professional in the educational field. “I want to come back to Mt. Olive,” says Robinson. “I want to give back to the district that gave me so much. I’m just ex-
cited for the opportunity. “I really admire what Larrie Reynolds has done over 10 years,” he continues, to go from a “good district” to a “great district” and to be recognized on a national level. “It’s an exciting place to be.” Robinson graduated Mt. Olive High School in 2001 and attended both the middle school, as well as Sandshore Elementary School. When Robinson attended MOMS its location was Chester M. Stephens Elementary School before the new middle school was built. He went onto Ramapo where he earned a bachelor’s in history, followed by a post bachelorette degree in teaching from William Patterson and a master’s in education leadership from the College of Saint Elizabeth. For the past two years he
has served as the superintendent of Stillwater Twp. School in Sussex County. Its own district, there is one school in grades pre-K through sixth with 300 students. Before that he was the assistant principal there for two years. Prior to working at Stillwater Twp., Robinson was a fifth grade history and language arts teacher at South Orange-Maplewood Tuscan Elementary School for eight years. Robinson looks forward to making an impact at a larger populated school with 1,200 students at MOMS compared to 300 at Stillwater, he says. “To influence the lives of 1,200 kids, which is a huge responsibility, that’s something exciting for me,” says Robinson. His mom, Joanne Robinson, has been school secretary for the past 15 years at Sandshore

Elementary. “We were always involved in school,” says Robinson. “Education is always something that intrigued me. I always saw myself in school; I always loved school; it’s something I’ve always been good at. It was my goal from day one to be a continued on page 7

It’s great to be there for kids who need you.” Robinson’s goals as principal is to try to encourage personalized learning for students, to improve “how they connect with others, embracing cultures” for the purpose of conversation and “understanding one another. Teaching students how to get along with each other is probably the most important thing we can do at this point.” One idea is to use data on performance as well as social data in order to personalize education for each child, he says. Another goal is to work on visible learning objectives so work is tangible. Students can come with a product and use debates, projects or slideshows, “to collaborate in groups or research on their own to show what they learned.”
Working in education has been enjoyable for Robinson as he looks forward to his next venture. “Having a vision, implementing that vision into student learning,” has been his satisfaction, and doing that at an even larger school “is going to be a wonderful thing.” He looks forward to connecting with the teachers in Mt. Olive as well. “We are still learners,” he says. “I’m going to learn from them, they are going to learn from me. We have to adapt, be flexible, work together for the welfare of the students.” He realizes he will be “filling some big shoes of Susan Breton.” He hopes to build on “what’s already started, putting my own spin on it. As far as challenges, I don’t see it; I just see a wonderful opportunity. I’m really excited to get started.”

The MATE program offers our students the opportunity to develop their technical, marketing, and business skills and then apply them to real world problems.” Bodmer explained that the MATE competition required the team to model itself as a company and provide technical documentation, as well as a presentation in marketing, engineering and company safety & corporate responsibility. The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington issued a request for proposals for an ROV and crew that can operate in the salt and fresh water areas in the Pacific Northwest. The team’s tasks for the ROV and operators included locating the wreckage of a vintage airplane and returning its engine to the surface, installing or recovering a seismometer, and installing a tidal turbine and instrumentation to monitor the ocean environment.
Loggerhead ROV received its design challenge back in November and had to design and build their ROV for the Regional Competition in May held at Villanova University. The team finished in the top three which qualified them for the international competition. Students were able to prepare for the competition throughout the year by taking advantage of the facilities provided by MOHS such as 3D printers for quick designs, and a new test tank. “I can say with confidence that my trip with our team was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Johnson. “From sharing our pit tent with a team from Egypt, to meeting teams from all around the globe, this was an experience that I’ll never forget.” To learn more about Mt. By Cheryl Conway f traveling abroad this summer made that bucket list, then several members of the Mt. Olive High School Basketball team got some slam dunks. Eleven players of the boys’ team and two coaches went to China June 27 to July 11 to play basketball and get cultured. Their fully funded trip was sponsored by Capstone America. Chinese students have spent the past 18 months attending Mt. Olive High School and summer camps and as part of the exchange Mt Olive students and teachers have been invited to visit China. The basketball team is the first group to go from MOHS, but more groups will be invited in the future. “It’s been a really great experience with this international partnership that we’ve established,” says MOHS Principal Kevin Stansberry. “It’s been a tremendous exchange between students and educators in China and Mt. Olive High School.” The relationship between China and MOHS “became available to us” in the summer of 2016, explains Stansberry. He explains it as “brand new, something fresh, something different.” While MOHS has “brought
in students from different countries every year I’ve been here,” including Germany, Spain and France as part of a foreign exchange program, Stansberry says the arrangement with the students from the Asian countries is different. Students come here for credit that they can use to advance themselves and for college applications. “They have to pay tuition to earn high school credit.” In turn, the Mt Olive school district brings in extra funding, while the students from Asia can build their transcript. “China was very interested in what we have to offer at Mt. Olive High School,” says Stansberry. They liked the school’s programs, performance and school status particularly what it offers in humanities, music, art, robotics, Steam education and business, he says. “We were looking for partners and they were doing their own research on how we prepare our students for college readiness,” says Stansberry. At the end of August 2016, 12 students from China came to Mt. Olive to start their education experience here. They stayed with host families during the school year of 2017 to 2018. Last summer 100 students in grades nine through 12 from China, Korea and Vietnam participated in the Capstone summer program at MOHS. This year that number has more than doubled. During this summer, 232 students from China, Korea and Vietnam are attending camps this year at MOHS. About 212 in grades three through eight were set to attend the District Steam Camp the weeks of July 9 and July 16. About 32 students in grades nine through 12, also from the Asian countries, will attend the MOHS Character Camp during the weeks of July 23 and July 30 with a focus on English American studies, industrial design, television and robotics. Stansberry says arrangements have been made with Centenary University to use its dorms for the students to stay. To reciprocate, talks began last year with Capstone America that involved inviting a constituent from Mt. Olive to visit China. Stansberry has visited there five times as part of the arrangement but that invitation has now extended into the school district.
“We really accelerated our partnership and our exchange,” says Stansberry. “More of our students, coaches, advisors will go over there,” he says, “to continue to build a bridge between our partners in China and Mt. Olive High School.” For the first group, it was a “toss up” between robotics or basketball team, says Stansberry. Planning happened quickly so it was a matter of who had visas. “Robotics was just finishing their season,” says Stansberry. “Basketball is very popular in China,” with a “very organized sports program for boys,” and the thought was to arrange for some friendlies to merge the popular sports program. “Basketball seemed to be a really good fit for this particular trip,” says Stansberry. Talks among the players began in April and resulted in the first group to go over: 11 boys, rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, along with Dan Grzywacz, social studies teacher and girls’ basketball coach; and John Pieper, social studies teacher and boys’ freshman basketball coach. After playing a friendly basketball team from Sweden at MOHS the Monday before their flight to China, Stansberry tagged them as the MO Globetrotters.

An “Exciting itinerary for students participating in this trip,” was planned for the group to include art, museums, site seeing, basketball and more. Accommodations were arranged for them to stay in public and private dormitories on campus and at various sites. For the first part of the trip the group planned to stay in Shijiazhuang; for the second part they were visiting Shanghai Sports Academy. The exchange has been beneficial to all those involved in developing global citizenship; gaining appreciation of different cultures; growing ideas to pursue international business, world language, Asian studies; improving language skills; learning the difference in schooling. “It gave a worldly perspective on themes and topics,” says Stansberry, “and broadens perspectives of our students.” Stansberry was planning to meet with Mt. Olive’s first set of travelers to China upon their return for a debriefing to learn about the highlights from their trip “to see how we can grow the program with students and teachers.” Stay tuned for a follow up story in August in Mt. Local Dentist Spends Weekend Teaching Implant Procedures
r. Ira Goldberg, a leading local authority on dental implants, spent multiple days at the end of June training dentists who were just beginning their dental implant career. As a respected educator, it’s not uncommon for Goldberg to share his knowledge and expertise with others. As part of the faculty at The Dental Implant Learning Center in Englewood, Goldberg spent time with a group of doctors performing actual implant procedures for patients. “It always an honor to work with dentists who want to further their talents with dental implants,” he said. “These doctors are spending time away from their families and own offices to learn skills that will make them better dentists for the benefit of their patients.” What’s even more surprising is how full circle this teaching position is for Goldberg. Twenty three years ago he began his own implant career at this office. “Dr. John Minichetti, the director of this program, started his teaching career due to me trying to find a hands-on program where I could learn implant skills,” he said. “These programs really weren’t available. I pushed Dr. Minichetti
to start the program, which he did. Now, here I am as an instructor passing my knowledge onto others. It’s a real pleasure to be invited to do so.” “Dental implants have revolutionized patients’ options,” says Goldberg. “Instead of removable dentures and aggressive bridgework being only options, we are able to offer other services retained by implants. Whether a person needs a single tooth or a full jaw replacement, its amazing what we can now offer.” When asked about his role as an educator to other dentists, Goldberg stated, “I’ve always heard that when you’re passionate about something, it shows. I’ve been providing implant services for over 23 years, and I’m always excited about it. I guess that’s why other doctors and dental professionals ask me for my thoughts, help, and guidance. It’s quite an honor, I love to share.” Goldberg holds many honors in the field of implant dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. ub Scout Pack 62, located out of Sandshore School, held its annual Crossover Ceremony at the beginning of June. This year the pack grew to 40 scouts, ranging from kindergarteners to fifth graders. Pack 62 is a very active pack, which started a tradition two years ago to honor and provide the Mt. Olive Police Department with a full Thanksgiving dinner so that Mt. Olive’s finest can enjoy a hot holiday meal for all they do in the town. Every November, the Pack
also runs a food drive and donates the proceeds to the Mt. Olive Food Pantry. The scouts and parents come together during the holiday season and collect new, unwrapped toys for a holiday toy drive. While the scouts are busy volunteering in the community, they also take part in some fun scouting events, such as building and launching rockets and the famous Pinewood Derby, attending football games, camping at West Point and the Sussex County Miners Stadium, participating in a Flag Day and

any of today’s families have something in the kitchen that previous generations didn’t – more men involved in meal preparation. This summer, that trend will likely continue as men, especially fathers, take to the grill to prepare popular fare for the family. As millennials shatter stereotypes and share household tasks, fathers are using cooking as a way of bonding with their children by making their favorite family meals together. According to a study conducted by Men’s Health, more men are helping out in the kitchen than ever. Not only are they becoming primary grocery shoppers, but 92 percent of men surveyed said they are preparing meals for themselves and 77 percent are preparing meals for others.
Men are also among the ranks of the top food bloggers, often writing about their cooking adventures with their children. Among them is Derek Campanile of “Dad with a Pan,” whose passion for cooking and sharing recipes grew even stronger with the birth of his son. “I’ve always enjoyed cooking for people and mixing different ingredients to come up with something everyone enjoys, but it wasn’t until I became a dad that it truly began to sink in,” Campanile said. “When I cook with my son, food is so much more than food – it’s pure love. If one lives locally, they are beyond over all of the cold weather that stormed through and are ready to dive into summer. Whether it is making a splash in the pool, sizzling burgers on the grill or venturing out into the world, many people try to make each and every summer more memorable than the last. However, with today’s society, teens are more frequently on their computers, phones and other devices posting about their summers rather than basking in the glorious sun and actually enjoying it. Get off that phone this season and make it memorable by adding and checking off some of these places to that summer bucket list in order to
spice up the summer! Central Park, N.Y. At this notorious park, the activities are endless! No matter what time of the year, there is constant entertainment roaming the greenery whether it is musicians, artists, biking and more! Have kids? No problem! There are 21 playgrounds for the little guys to roam as well as the overall park itself is their playground with all of the beautiful scenery. Molly Conway of Flanders, a junior at Mt. Olive High School, Flanders, recalls her first time going to Central Park: “I liked how there was so much to look at and how there were so many people just out and about. You don’t see that a lot anymore since everyone is always glued to their phones.” When asked about her fondest memory about her trip, Conway states “Definitely my

But I bought a prop bag and it was fun to get involved with the cast as the show went on.” When asked as far as why she loved her experience, she said “It was fun getting ready and going out late to see the show with my friends and family. And once you actually got there, the people there are just so much fun and really make you laugh.” Admission for the show is $7. Want to be a part of the show? Governor Cody Aims To Prevent Teen Suicide
By Jason Cohen ith teen suicide on the rise throughout the state, Senator Richard Codey (D-Livingston), recently unveiled a $1 million plan to combat depression and help educate people on mental health. On July 1, the former governor introduced a bill that will award a $1 million grant within the NJ Department of Education (DOE) for school districts to hire mental health counselors. The NJ Department of Health will determine which school districts are awarded grants. The DOE will report on progress by 2021. There will be specialized training workshops to non-licensed, auxiliary school staff who interact with students and a creation of a statewide “Teen Suicide and Depression Task Force” charged with developing additional methods to combat teen
suicide and depression and report back to the state legislature by July 2019. “School workers such as secretaries, security guards and teacher’s aides need the tools and training to recognize bullying, early warning signs and symptoms of mental health issues, and the proper steps to resolve conflict and prevent potential disasters,” declared Governor Codey at a press conference at Liberty Middle School in West Orange in May. According to the New Jersey Youth Suicide Report, 2,731 people age 10 to 24 were treated in an emergency room for non-fatal suicide attempts/ self-inflicted injuries from 2013 to 2015. Also, according to the New Jersey Dept. of Health, from 2007 to 2016, suicides among children ages 10 to 18 rose by 16.6 percent. “Too many young lives are being lost,” Codey said at the press conference. “New Jersey
must act now to better equip all school employees to help identify at-risk students and prevent teen suicides and other mental health related incidents in their schools.” Codey and his wife, Mary Jo Codey, have been involved with mental health since 2012 when they established the Codey Fund for Mental Health. The organization’s goal is to educate people about mental health and provide quality treatment for individuals with mental illness. Mary Jo has dealt with depression and Codey has met with many parents who have lost kids to suicide, including Dianne Grossman of Rockaway, whose daughter Mallory took her own life at age 12 in June 2017 and Rachelle St. Phard, whose son Coby committed suicide in March 2016 at age 18. The governor has been sur-
rounded by death most of his life. He is the owner of Codey and Jones Funeral Home in Caldwell, but noted that he has never seen so saw many young people die until recently. Codey feels that social media is a huge factor in teen depression and suicide. Instead of being outside with friends or being active, bullying follows kids home onto Snapchat, Twitter or Facebook, making their lives even worse, he said. With the recent suicides of designer Kate Spade and renowned chef, Anthony Bourdain, depression can affect anyone, he said. The governor hopes these deaths may get people to talk about depression. “The biggest thing for mental health is to overcome the stigma of depression,” he said. “Teenage suicide is not a comfortable issue for people to talk about.”

Christmas And Netcong’s Santa Come To Waterloo Village

By Elsie Walker ith July’s sweltering temperatures, Christmas and Santa are two of the last things on most people’s minds. However, that’s not true for the historic village of Waterloo in Stanhope or for Netcong’s mayor, Joe Nametko, aka Santa Jersey Joe. On July 21, from 11a.m. -5 p.m., a Christmas in July fundraiser will be put on by State Park Service staff to benefit the 19th century restored village. Helping to set the mood, Santa Jersey Joe will be on hand to talk to children, pose for pictures, and accept letters to Santa, and weather-permitting, walk through a vendor area to greet people. The event itself is free, but there is a $5 parking fee to defray some costs. “Waterloo Village is really a remarkable place,” said Nametko. “Unfortunately, I only just found that out a few weeks ago when [I was given] a tour of the village. Helping restore one of the few remaining buildings is a great way to give back to my community while having a good time doing so.” When not walking around, Nametko will be located at the village’s Mule Barn, at which will be posted his hours for people to visit and take pictures. “The Mule Barn is
quite amazing, including one of the largest fireplaces I have ever seen,” he said. “ I am bringing my Santa Chair for pictures at the barn.” Given it is July and the extreme heat which started the month, people might wonder just how Santa Jersey Joe will survive in a suit made for cold weather Nametko shared some insights and secrets: “Santa in the summer is actually a lot of fun. It allows Santa Jersey Joe to dress casually and walk around singing Christmas carols. Hawaiian shirts, red shirts and suspenders coupled with white cargo shorts or white painter pants are part of the summer look. Santa Jersey Joe has a cooling vest that allows him remain cool in the warmest weather, even when in a Santa coat. Last year at Netcong Day, Santa was a frosty 65 degrees throughout the entire 85 degree day.” In addition to Santa Jersey Joe, the Waterloo event includes kayaking on the canal by the village, vendors with a variety of food items, tours of the village, and a Civil War encampment by reenactors of the 2nd NJ Cavalry. “There will be some period decorations and interpretive tours that will touch on what the holiday season would have been like for the different socioeconomic classes
that lived in Waterloo,” shared Andrea Proctor, Resource Interpretive specialist (Historian) at Waterloo. “We will be providing the kayaks and running informational tours for adults every 30 minutes.” As for the Civil War encampment. Joseph Puccetti, a “Private” in the 2nd NJ Cavalry group, said, “There will be three or four cavalry troopers there with two or three horses. We will have a campsite set up with a picket line to tie the horses. We will mount up and ride around to talk with the visitors and interact. We are there to answer any questions people may have about the equipment, uniforms, horses, or the cavalry in general.” In reflecting on the importance of preserving sites such as Waterloo, Proctor commented, “Historic Sites give us a window to the past,” said Proctor. “Progress is built on lessons learned from the past. Collectively, we have a responsibility to remember and acknowledge our successes and shortcomings as a community so we can continue to improve ourselves and our nation.” Meanwhile, Santa Jersey Joe had a reminder for all: “As of today, there is only 182 days until Christmas!” For more information on the event, call 973-347-1835.
