Morristown Woman Battling MS, Raising Awareness

By Evan Wechman nlike much of the general public, Vicky Bashant of Morristown is aware that March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month. Bashant, 45, who has been living with this illness for over ten years, has been both an advocate and a philanthropist for the disease. Throughout her journey, Vicky has learned that she is a fighter with a wonderful family. She has had setbacks along the way but is insistent that she won’t let MS define her. She explains that she is her own person and is stronger than the disease. She is a happily married woman to the “love of her life,” Chuck, and has two wonderful sons, Christopher and Luke. Vicky considers herself blessed to have such a close family. However, in 2008, she was feeling ill and experiencing symptoms that caused her to question what she was afflicted with. The symptoms ranged from dizziness and nausea to full blown vertigo. She consulted many doctors who misdiagnosed the illness but finally found a specialist who confirmed that her symptoms were due to a severely debilitating disease known as Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Vicky states that she was like much of the Northern New Jersey population in not being fully aware of the ramifications of this disease. When she was first diagnosed, she “didn’t know what it was and thought it was a death sentence.” Though MS is a debilitating disease, Vicky is going to try this month to show people, especially those recently diagnosed with MS, that their life does not have to end. Through participation in various activities such as the MS Walk, or cook-offs where Vicky displays her talents in the kitchen, Vicky will be at the forefront in the battle against MS.

Vicky, who in the last decade has learned an immense amount of information about her illness, wants to inspire others who are just now facing the same diagnoses she received back in 2008. “I don’t want people to be as scared as I was,” she admits. Rather, she wants others in her situation to look at all her accomplishments in her life, such as raising both awareness and much needed resources in the tri-state area, and take comfort in knowing they could do the same. She has raised over 20k in fundraisers such as the MS Walk to help defeat the disease. According to Vicky, because she is “able to be so active, so many people are not as scared of it (MS).” She wants desperately to correct the misconception for both sufferers and their families that “life is over,” upon hearing of one’s affliction with MS. She boldly asserts that “your life does not have to be over.”
Vicky’s activities in pursuing a world free of MS one day is just part of what keeps her busy. Despite having dark days where she can’t get out of the house due to intense symptoms, she holds down a steady part time job working in the Human Resources department for the Morristown based insurance agency, Crum and Foster. In a time, when many of her friends complain about job dissatisfaction, Vicky brings the same fighting spirit to her career and the return is tenfold. Her employer is “extremely supportive,” as she is able to set her own schedule based on her treatment needs, and “it’s a job I love,” she explains. Vicky also takes great pleasure in helping her teenage sons with their school and extracurricular activities. She currently is the president of the Morristown High School Theatre Association. Vicky is on a mission to defeat MS which she refers to as “the monster.” She is also a participant in various online support groups, counseling others, and
receiving motivation from those like her. She wants them to know that “if you have the support of loved ones such as family and friends,” you could fight your way through it. However, if she is cautious about anything, it is that some friendships won’t endure during her battle. Some former friends, due to ignorance or fear, shied away from her upon learning of her illness. “You know who your true friends are,” she confides, when speaking about her relationships. Despite such circumstances, Vicky is a warrior and nothing sums up her spirit more than her cutting the ribbon speech for the MS Walk in March of 2011 in New York City. Vicky inspired the crowd when she proclaimed “together we will walk to defeat the monster. I know I have MS but it will never, ever, have me.” This courageous woman has learned that today she is “stronger than I thought I was. I am much more of a fighter.”

Craigslist Founder Donates 25K to Non-Profit in Morristown

By Jason Cohen non-profit organization in Morristown that teaches adults how to read, write and speak English, was recently the recipient of a $25,000 donation by the founder of Craigslist. The Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (LVMC) received the money from Craigslist founder and Morristown native, Craig Newmark last month. The grant will help educate students on civics and citizenship. In 2016, Newmark created Craig Newmark Philanthropies, a private foundation that promotes civic engagement. Newmark told the Morristown News he enjoys giving to worthy causes, but helping this one meant more because it was in his hometown. “Literacy is fundamental to everything,” Newmark said. “I’m still quite attached to my hometown. It’s (LVMC) the kind of work in a free country where people look out for each other.” Debbie Leon has been the executive

Craigslist Founder Donates... continued from page 4 of six and 300 tutors, Leon explained it has had tremendous impact in the past 30 years. Seeing adults come to them knowing very little or no English and eventually become citizens, get jobs and learn English, is a surreal feeling, she said. Leon noted that as long as the student is willing to put the work in, the tutors are eager to help. “The nice thing about our program is it works with the students based on where they are,” she said. “Our students are really able to go out there and get jobs. Our students are
able to accomplish incredible goals.” Leon explained that the students usually come to them for a minimum of a year. The tutors are trained on how to interact with people of various languages and tutors are offered seven days a week. In fact, Leon recalled how she recently saw someone who is now a teacher and came to LVMC five years ago. “English is an extremely hard language to learn,” Leon commented. “Our tutors are definitely patient people. We’re there to support them as long as they are working toward their goals.”

Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Morris County Girl Attends President Trump’s State of the Union Address

By Steve Sears n October 2018, 10-year-old Grace Eline was declared cancer-free after completing treatment for a rare germ cell brain tumor. “Fantastic,” says her mom, Aubrey Reichard-Eline, when asked about Grace’s current condition. “She is happy to be out of treatment and focused on normal 4th grader things. We still have a lot of follow up with various doctors which she would rather not participate in, but she knows this is part of life now and in order to stay healthy we must be diligent in follow up for the rest of her life.” Yes, Grace is thankfully in great health, and that’s a super reason to be elated – perhaps the best. However, a close second might just be an invitation to Washington, D.C. from the President of the United States. About two weeks prior to the original State of the Union address (January 31) , the Eline’s learned of an invite by President Donald Trump, but had no idea it was to attend the Address. Learning more specifics as the date approached, the family kept details hush-hush. “We (Grace and I) went down on Sunday,” explains Aubrey. “We had press pictures at the White House Monday morning. The weather was beautiful, and we spent the rest of the day touring D.C. as Grace had never been there before.” On Monday night, when the press release went out regarding the State of the Union guests, the Eline’s began telling people to watch it. “VERY excited! I couldn’t believe it at first!” says Grace when asked how she felt when she learned of the invitation. Grace and her mom had an interview Tuesday morning at their hotel, and then around noon were whisked to the White House. There they met the other guests and their families, and then stepped into the Oval Office to meet and chat with President Trump. “From there we toured the White House, met the Vice President and Mrs. Pence, had dinner, and then met Melania Trump (“They were genuine and very nice,” says Aubrey.)” They were fantastic with Grace.”
“They were very nice,” adds Grace. “The President said he knew all about my story and how brave I am. He was happy I came to see him. The Vice-President knew my story and said he was very happy to get to meet me. He asked how I was liking the day and being at the White House.” The First Lady confirmed that Grace would sit with her that evening. “It was the best part. I have always looked up to her, so getting to meet her and then sit with her was perfect for me. Melania kept making sure I was okay the entire night which was very nice. I felt very special.” Aubrey adds, “Grace was so very excited. The entire day had been a dream, and this was the icing on the cake for her! From there, those traveling to the Capital went to the First Lady’s motorcade and departed for the Capital. It was surreal. At the Capital we reviewed where Grace would be. Grace and I were then escorted to Melania’s chambers at the Capital where we sat with her and Mrs. Pence before being officially seated for the speech.” Grace was then escorted to her seat. “We had an alignment moment - making sure she was good- and I assure you she was. She said, ‘Mom I’ve got this.’ We kissed, and she took her place. Melania was escorted in and I went back to her chambers to watch with other guests and staff. I had a great spot to watch - including chocolate, comfy seats and tissues as it was amazing and emotional.” When President Trump addressed Grace from the podium, she stood up to much applause. “Very excited!!! It was amazing!!! I almost couldn’t believe it was actually happening,” Grace recalls. “Afterwards, we were right there when she came out of the speech. Senators and Representatives kept coming up to her to congratulate her and talk to her as we were making our way back to the motorcade back to the White House.” “(It was) nothing short of AMAZING.” Grace celebrated her 10th birthday on December 16 in a very special way. She hosted a Dance-a-thon to benefit children battling cancer. The local community, local businesses and supportive friends helped the event come together. “Throughout
treatment, when we would have a moment of not feeling so good or we were on our way to treatment or just because we made it another day,” says Aubrey, “we would put on a sassy playlist and dance around. When it came time to plan her 10th birthday – and we have always done her birthdays for charity – we thought ‘Why not dance for this one as there was so much to celebrate and raise even more for a good cause?’ So, the Dance-a-thon idea was born as a way for everyone to have some fun, raise awareness and raise money for a beautiful charity that helped us so much - The Valerie Fund.” As for the Washington D.C. trip, Aubrey summed up the entire day. “We had a very good experience. The staff took great care of us. Everyone we met was very genuine and caring in our conversations. The other guests were also inspirational to be with for that day. The overall experience was very uplifting, and we were truly honored to be a part of it. We are extremely fortunate that Grace took a not so good situation and turned it into a positive for so many. We are so happy that Grace was chosen to represent this cause and to be honored the way she was for the country and the world to see that even in the darkness there can be great light.”

Morris School District Begins Vaping Addiction Program

plans to create an intervention program to help students who are addicted to vaping, according to Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast. The district has experienced the same phenomenon that schools across the country

have tracked over the last year – a rise in teen e-cigarette use. And, like many districts, they’re trying to put a stop to a growing problem. Some schools have toughened their policies and imposed stricter discipline to students caught puffing on campus, while others have sought to educate students more about the dangers of vaping. In the Morris School District, officials have already taken several steps to address the problem over the last two years, such as updating policies and procedures to deal with students caught vaping and revising the curriculum for health class to address e-cigarette use. Nonetheless, there’s at least one to two vaping incidents per week at the middle school and high school, which is enough
for officials to take another step – the creation of an intervention program, Pendergrast said in a letter posted on the district website. In his letter, Pendergrast described the new program as “a comprehensive, multi-tiered” resource for students who need addiction intervention. The four-week program will be overseen by student assistance coordinators, as well as certified drug and alcohol counselors trained to handle substance abuse issues in school environments. As part of the program, students will participate in individual and group counseling sessions, regularly check in with counselors and complete assignments. “Our administrators have been working in partnership with colleagues in other discontinued on page 14

Morris County Exhibit Highlights 50 Years of Fab Fashion

People’s attire, whether it’s the flapper dresses of the 1920s, mini skirts of the 1960s or grungy flannels of the 1990s, say a lot about shifts in the political, economic and social climate. At the Morris County Historical Society, visitors have the opportunity to view history, through the lens of clothing style. Through June 2019, the society will present “Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms,” an exhibit that includes over 125 pieces from throughout the 20th century. “People really relate to clothes. It is the single most unique characteristic of humanity and something everyone can relate to,” Executive Director Amy Curry said. “They draw people into history in a way that few other things can. And, that allows us to open discussions to deeper cultural and historical topics, so it’s a gateway to history.”
From the timeless designs of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to the trend-setting bell bottoms of Sonny and Cher, the exhibit explores more than five decades of history through an exhibit featuring nearly 125 pieces from the society’s textile collection. “Nearly 90 percent of what’s on display originated from New Jersey, about 84 percent from Morris County specifically. That was really important for us to show our visitors, most of whom are from New Jersey,” Curry said. “Fashion trends can be more global, but this exhibit is really about New Jersey’s expression of the interconnected relationship of fashion and history.” “Iconic Culture” also highlights cultural milestones in local, state and national history that coincided with the Roaring 20s, Great Depression, World War II, Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam Era. While there’s been a decrease in teens smoking cigarettes, vaping with e-cigarettes and hookahs is on the rise. According to the latest youth tobacco survey, almost 10 percent of teens in the state are using e-cigs – which is more than double the rate of teens reporting the usage of traditional cigarettes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.05 million high school students and 570,000 middle-schoolers were using e-cigarettes last
year. That’s a total of more than 3.6 million kids, up from 280,000 in 2011. The numbers have jumped since the 2015 introduction of Juul, a cartridge-based e-cigarette that’s been extremely popular with kids. The current use among high school students rose 78 percent in a single year, between 2017 and 2018. In New Jersey, 12.1 percent of high school kids use e-cigarettes, according to an April report by the non-profit Tobacco Free Kids. With over 8,000 e-liquid flavors, like chocolate mint, peanut butter cup, blueberry cheesecake and milk and cereal, many kids can’t resist trying it. According to U.S. Food and Drug Administration, high school students are actually more likely to vape than adults over age 25 and that e-cigarette use is leading more teens to try traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes, also known as vapes, are battery-operated devices that heat up liquid nicotine to generate an aerosol that users inhale. Its manufacturers have reiterated that their products are intended for
adults who wish to quit smoking and not teens. What are kids’ reasons for vaping? Flavor, taste, curiosity and “the belief they are less harmful than other tobacco products,” a recent state Health Department survey found. E-cigarettes, which are a $2.5 billion a year industry, have not been approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation product, though researchers are still investigating if vaping helps adults quit smoking traditional cigarettes. The FDA claims it can offer both benefits and risks – one of those risk being teens experimenting with e-cigarettes, becoming addicted to nicotine and then progressing onto tobacco products for the long term. The Morris School District plans to host a program for parents on the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes soon. And, in Morris Township, officials are currently mulling a ban on underage nicotine possession and consumption, including vaping, and are set to vote on it on March 20.

Morristown Girl Scouts Celebrate World Thinking Day!
W
hen a girl signs up for Girl Scouts, she automatically connects with over 10 million other girls in 150 different countries. Since 1926, Girl Scouts have been making friendships around the world, which is why we celebrate World Thinking Day. On February 22nd, at Morristown High School, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 94923, led by Micaela Cassidy and Seleyna Bautista, hosted World Thinking Day for over 175 Morristown Girl Scouts. With 20 troops participating, the Girl Scouts connected with each other while visiting stations showcasing Brazil, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Switzerland, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Amidst the fun of learning about and sampling delicious food from the various countries, the Girl Scouts also earned their Global Action badge by addressing one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs for short. As this year’s SDGs focus on No Poverty, Morristown Girl Scouts assembled over 175 Breakfast Bags for the local Community Soup Kitchen, with donations from local businesses: Lovey’s, South Street Creamery, Target, Wegmans, ShopRite, Costco, Walmart, QuickChek, and Acme. Staffers are currently rotating in new pieces so that the exhibit continues to evolve, she added. “People can see it again, for the first time,” Curry said. In recent years, many museums across the country have found success with similar exhibits. A look at the relationship between fashion and the Catholic Church drew record crowds to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2018, making it the most attended exhibition in the museum’s history. Iconic Culture will run through June 16
at Acorn Hall (68 Lafayette Avenue, Morristown). The museum is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for students.
