By Megan Roche s we enter into June, it’s the time of graduation, prom, and the dreaded college decisions. For three Morristown Beard students, shortly after graduation, they will begin their new adventure, adjusting to life as a plebe at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. While many of their classmates will be decorating dorm rooms and spending the summer together, these young adults will begin their indoctrination into the United States Naval Academy on June 27, just a few weeks after they walk across the stage on June 8 to consummate their high school careers. George Burke, John Trombetta, and Sarah Williams are excited for the adventures that await during their next four years at the United States Naval Academy. Morristown Beard is the first school in the nation to have three appointments in one year. The Morristown Beard Class of 2019 has 109 students.
“We are extremely proud of George, John and Sarah and all that they have accomplished,” said MBS Headmaster Peter J. Caldwell in a press release. “It’s a direct reflection on the character and engagement of our students and the strength of our academic program here at Morristown-Beard School.” For Burke, Trombetta, and Williams, each are unique in their interests and their ideal career paths at the academy. Burke, who serves as the Class of 2019 President, was captain of the football team, as well as being a member of the track and lacrosse teams. Trombetta, the senior class Treasurer, was a captain of the school’s swim team and is a competitive triathlete who is nationally ranked by USA Triathlon. Williams, an athlete on the track and field team, is president of the school’s diversity club and a co-president of the school’s community service club. “I’ve known since second grade that I continued on page 2

When I received my appointment letter, I made a promise to myself at eight years old that I would run a mile to begin to get in physical shape for the academy and I actually kept that promise to myself.” Burke said with a laugh. Morristown Beard held a special ceremony to officially welcome the three into the US Naval Academy Class of 2023 on April 30. Captain Rick McGoey presided over the ceremony. “We most likely will never see again three students from the same high school graduating class entering the Naval Academy at the same time,” said Captain McGoey in a press release. “According to U.S. News & World Report, out of the 5,300 colleges and universities in the United States, the Naval Academy is ranked as one of the top 10 most selective schools based on acceptance rates. Typically, the highest performing high schools may have one student enter the Naval Academy every three or four years. It is rare to have two students enter in one year. For Morristown-Beard
School to have three students is unheard of.” Williams, the sole female of the three, has always had a passion for aviation. She looked at the United States Air Force Academy but was happy to receive her appointment to the Naval Academy. “I just knew I wanted to pursue aviation and my dad had recommended a service academy to me. I’m less nervous about the academic aspect and more nervous about the atmosphere of the school since it has such a high standard.” Williams said. The application process for any service academy is a tough one. Applicants must be able to prove academic success with a rigorous schedule, be well rounded, volunteer, and secure a coveted nomination from a member of the House of Representatives or Congress official. All three Morristown Beard candidates were offered early admission, another notable accomplishment for the school. “I always knew it was a hard school to get into, but for the past two to three years, I didn’t really allow myself to have another
option. I was set on the Naval Academy. I was confident about it, but it felt great to finally get that letter in the mail. It was a moment that I was really waiting on.” Trombetta said. As Burke, Trombetta, and Williams prepare to say goodbye to the halls at Morristown Beard, they are ready for the next step. Morristown Beard is no stranger to service academy appointments. The three students will join up with Ryan Waters, Morristown Beard Class of 2017, who will be beginning his junior year at the academy in the fall. “We’re all really excited and really proud of them. I’ve been at the school for fifteen years and I don’t remember ever having multiple service academy appointments, so this is extremely rare.” Steve Patchett, spokesperson for the school, said. Burke plans to major in history with a double minor in Spanish and Arabic, Trombetta plans to major in mechanical engineering and a potential minor in Arabic. Williams plans to major aeronautical engineering and minor in Spanish.

A
Not All Headaches are Created Equal
lmost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Headaches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side effects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?” Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preservatives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus congestion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. An assessment by an Acupuncturist can often identify and treat imbalances (that are causing the headaches) that are unknown to the patient previously. In Chinese Medicine not all headaches are created equally. Rather, during an assessment, we evaluate the individual patient on many levels to determine their exact symptoms (i.e Is the headache frontal? One sided? Behind the eyes? Is there nausea? Frequency and intensity of pain?....) and if there are any triggers. We take a whole body approach and assess the patient’s physical condition as well as their constitution, emotional health, diet and lifestyle. Unlike the blanket treatment western medicine offers which is typically some type of pain reliever, Chinese Medicine
finds a specific treatment for each patient based on their individual symptoms. Five patients suffering “headaches” may receive five completely different treatments. By addressing the root cause, Acupuncture can be a safe way to prevent and treat various types of headaches, without the unwanted side effects of medications. Based on the individual assessment and diagnosis, tiny needles are inserted into various points on the body. Depending on the case, small electrodes can be attached to specific needles that elicit a small electrical current. The feeling of the electric stimulation on the needles is a comfortable sensation that generally elicits a feeling of tingling, tapping or heaviness. The electric stimulation enhances the release of specific neurochemicals which aids in the treatment of headaches. The needles are typically retained for 20-30 minutes, during which the patient is left to relax and take a nap. Acupuncture is known to be effective and can offer long standing results, but it is not always a quick fix. Especially if the headaches are chronic, several treatments may be required to achieve the full result. Again, this is because it is addressing the root cause and not just covering up symptoms like other treatments. If you suffer from headaches or migraines start getting relief today! “Live Wolves!” at the Mendham Township Library

By Steve Sears he Mendham Township Library, along with Howling Woods Farm, a 501(c)(3) public charity animal rescue in Jackson, New Jersey, presented a “Live Wolves” program on Thursday evening, May 16, at the Brookside Community Club. Attendees were given the opportunity to meet the wolves following the program. They could pet the wolves and have a picture taken with them. “The wolves were extremely calm and friendly to all of the people that met them. We had over 160 people attend the program that evening,” says Trish Hall, Library Program Director. “We have been planning the pro-
gram for a few months. We had Howling Woods Farm at the library about four years ago, so we knew they had a great, interesting program with live wolves. We had a huge turnout four years ago and wanted to bring the wolves back so the public could have the opportunity to see them again.” Part of the mission of the program is to explain and show that the wolves are very calm and timid animals. “The general public believes wolves to be aggressive, mean animals.,” says Hall. “Howling Woods tries to dispel the myth that wolves are a dangerous aggressive beast. Most of the fairy tales and stories refer to the wolves as being bad. continued on page 7

Live Wolves... continued from page 6 They explained that we would rarely see wolves in nature as they are very timid and avoid people. They also explained that there is a diminishing wolf population and that man is their biggest predator. The wolf population in Yosemite National Park has gone down from 200 to 80 in recent years. The wolves in Yosemite are protected but if they leave the park, they are at risk of being shot. Often it is cattle ranchers who hunt wolves in an effort to protect their herd of cattle.” Careful planning went into the program, especially with the wolves involved and
a large number of folks expected to attend. Also, the event had to be moved from the library to a larger venue to accommodate extra people. “We got extra insurance because the venue had changed and because we were bringing in wolves. The wolves are calm and friendly, and accustomed to being around people and children, but they are still animals. Our program was designed for families so we knew there would be small children; the combination of wolves and small children could be unpredictable, so we wanted to be prepared,” says Hall. the program with her 8-yearold daughter, Reese, who attends Mendham Township Elementary School. “It’s incredible how they play a big role in keeping our ecosystem healthy. How they communicate by body language and howling. They travel in packs and work together. They all have their part to play,” says Reese. She also adds, “It was really interesting to learn more about wolves and actually see them live for my first time and interact with them.” Brian Boden was also among those present. “I always enjoy our library’s programs, always short and very interesting. This one gave folks some insights into the many persistent myths about wolves, which have a bad and
very mistaken reputation, and having two of them calmly letting everyone pet them was wonderful. Humans cling to myths and owe animals like wolves a lot, hopefully people will contribute to the Howling Woods Farm who runs the shelter for wolf-dog pets, taking them in after superficial and casual people ditch them for no longer being puppy-cute at a given age. Like they are toasters, or latest cell phones du jour. By Dawn M Chiossi he 4-H Organization, according to Manager and 4-H Program Associate, Kathy Murarik, 4-H is “a great secret nobody knows about.” But when the annual Morris County 4-H Fair rolls around, with approximately anywhere from 15 to 20 thousand people attending, that secret is definitely out of the bag. Taking place on July 18 through 21st at Chubb Park in Chester, the Morris County 4-H Fair will be held for 4 days. There’s something wonderfully homespun and old fashioned about a 4-H Fair, and it’s not just for those in rural communities any more. The fair will be sponsored by the Morris County 4-H Association in support of the 4-H Youth Development Program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. As well as providing summer fun, this summer staple also showcases the vast achievements of the Morris County 4-H

And that’s what makes a 4-H Fair different and special compared to other standard fairs. It’s a chance to share in and celebrate the kids and their accomplishments. People can see with their own eyes their hard work and devotion that goes into their projects: From goat races, to goat agility courses, to dog shows (including seeing eye dogs), to chickens, rabbits, small animals and more. Animals are only part of it however, there’s also sports oriented showcases, science, crafts and exhibitions, clothing and textiles, needlework, cooking, baking, vegetables and flowers, everything that
can even extend to poetry, pictures, creative writing, and art work. Murarik even discloses that there will be a wood carver, and a beekeeping demonstration where they can sell honey. “It’s whatever you can think of,” she enthuses. “With 4-H, there’s no limit.” After showing their accomplishments, there will be judging (for the older members) and they will win prizes. 4-H is a definite learn by doing approach, and as such it boosts and empowers its members to become competent and caring adults, preparing them for the world. Morris County 4-H Fair... continued from page 9 at large. Warm and enthusiastic regarding the organization, Murarik, has been with the Morris County 4-H Fair since it began at Chubb Park in 1984. She relates that before then, the fair was just more like an expo, something that took place inside at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall. But once people discovered all of the fun they could have at this event, it was ultimately moved to its outdoor location of Chester’s Chubb Park-- expanding from two days to its current four. “Our fair is still very small compared to other 4-H Fairs out there, with approximately 10 tents so far,” Murarik remarks. “It’s big, but it’s not humongous. It is filled with all sorts of unique things and amusements. It’s very workable to see everything easily,” she tells. In addition to the project animal shows, the fair will have rides and amusements, fun and games, live music, performances and demonstrations, pony rides, hay rides,
petting zoos, a cake decorating contest, watermelon eating contest, dress-a-pet contest, and a craft sale table. Of course, like any summer fair, there will be lots of food to tempt the appetite including foods like barbecue, a food sale table, and much more. Attendees won’t want to miss the Friday evening fireworks show (with a rain date of Saturday) or the Saturday hot air balloon rides and tricky tray. There is no fee for the fair, but there is a $5.00 donation for parking and $10.00 donation for fireworks. Whether people attend just one day, or every day, there will be much to see and enjoy, and Murarik is elated. Keeping her fingers crossed for good weather, not just for the fair, but for the hot air balloon ride, it has a special place in her heart. Having taken one in the past, she can barely contain her anticipation to take one again this year. She describes the balloon as tethered
and rising to about 50 to 75 feet. “It’s intense, loud and hot and you are right there. It’s such a unique experience. I love it,” she enthuses. And very quickly Murarik’s mind circles back to the members of 4-H. When she describes how their opening ceremonies showcase the clubs, participants, banners and flags, it’s almost like a parade where they introduce everyone, and remarks are made. Best of all, it gets everyone excited for the festivities yet to come. The Morris County 4-H Fair is not just a good time, it is a culmination of everything that the members have learned from the club, Murarik explains. “They run it all. This is all about having the members take on leadership roles (such as running a business and public speaking) and having them be responsible. 4-H teaches them so much: Confidence in leadership and citizenship, empowering them. I’ve seen 4-H turn kids from a shy youngster into amazing leaders.”

reschool Advantage awarded its Golden Acorn award for excellence to the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center this year. The Center’s Executive Director Harriet McCarter accepted the award that was presented at Preschool Advantage’s annual Preschool Director’s Luncheon this spring. The Golden Acorn Awards are a result of a rigorous process of evaluation by Preschool Advantage’s School Committee. This Committee, which is comprised of numerous current and former preschool directors and teachers who care deeply about early childhood education, visit Preschool advantage’s partner preschools on a three-year cycle to ensure that the quality of their programs is maintained. The partner schools have to show excellence in five key criteria: teacher and child interaction, curriculum, family involvement, staff qualifications, professional development, and management of the school. Once the Committee determines a partner school meets the required standards of excellence, Preschool Advantage recognizes its achievement by bestowing its Golden Acorn Award for ex-
emplary quality in preschool education. The F.M. Kirby Children’s Center of the Madison Area YMCA is a state-renowned childhood development center. Harriet McCarter explains, “Our mission is to meet the needs of our entire community. Freeholder Cabana Inducted into NJAC Statewide Hall of Fame
M
orris County Freeholder Director Doug Cabana was inducted today into the New Jersey Association of Counties’ inaugural Freeholder Hall of Fame during an event held in Atlantic City. Cabana, who is a Boonton Township resident, was one of a dozen freeholders from across New Jersey to be honored for their leadership, commitment to county government, and 20 years of public service as elected freeholders. The award was made during the President’s Luncheon at NJAC’s 69th annual county government convention, this year at Caesar’s in Atlantic City. Freeholder Cabana is the longest-serving member of the Morris County Board of Freeholders, having joined the
board in April 1997. He is a former freeholder director who was elected by his colleagues to that post in 2000, 2001, and again in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He served as deputy director in 1998, 1999, 2011 and 2012. A past president of the New Jersey Association of Counties, it was under Freeholder Cabana’s leadership in 2006 that the association became an initial driving force behind the now popular concept of “shared services.” He continues in 2019 as Morris County’s representative to that statewide association, a role he has held since 1999. Cabana was mayor of Boonton Township for six years and a member of the township’s governing body for 11 years.
He is a member of the 200 Club of Morris County and a former president of the Morris County League of Municipalities. Freeholder Cabana is an

Navigating Hope Throughout Morris County

By Kimberly Redmond orris County recently launched its new “Navigating Hope” mobile services vehicle, which will bring assistance-on-wheels to residents in need across the county’s 39 communities. The new vehicle, which was unveiled on May 6 in Morristown, will offer on-site benefits eligibility screenings and application assistance, as well as link people to a number of other community services. It’ll make regular stops at locations such as supermarkets, libraries, religious institutions, shopping centers, train stations and malls, according to the county. “Navigating Hope is about social justice, dignity and respect. It will provide access to resources that our neighbors may not know exists, and will offer face-to-face support and engagement. It is also about community coming together to serve community,’’ said Family Promise Executive Director Joann Bjornson.
People will be able to apply for food stamps, Medicaid, general assistance, temporary assistance for needy families, utility assistance and housing assistance, or get referrals for EITC (tax credits), WIC (nutritional assistance), aging services, domestic violence services, veterans ser-

In April 2017, the county put its “Hope One” van on the road, which provides mental
health and addiction services across Morris County. Twice a week, the van, which is staffed by a Morris County Sheriff’s Office, licensed clinician and certified peer recovery specialist, brings services to people in need. The team’s goal is to prevent drug overdoses and deaths by reaching out to those who need help, rather than waiting for them to show up in a hospital emergency room. “Navigating Hope, along

CCM Lady Titans Softball Team Advances to the Nationals Wrapping Up a Successful Academic Year
T
he County College of Morris (CCM) Women’s Softball Team won the Divisional Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 11, beating Mercyhurst College in the final two games of the tournament. As a result, the Lady Titans have travel to Mississippi to compete in the National Junior College World Series Tournament. The tournament was held in Clinton, MS, from May 22 to May 25. This was the first time since 1991 that the Lady Titans Softball Team has participated in a national tournament. The team is also the Region XIX Champions for 2019. “Coach Greg Wardlow and his team have worked very hard with our students and our Lady Titans have shown tremendous dedication to excellence throughout the year,” said Dr. Anthony J. Iacono, president of CCM. “I am very proud of each of them and how they have represented CCM. Watching our students excel on and off the field always makes me CCM proud as I am sure it does for the entire CCM family.”
During this season, the Lady Titans helped celebrate Wardlow’s 400th win since joining the team in 2005. His coaching background includes 25 years as player/manager for the Kings Athletic Club of Central Jersey, a highly successful men’s softball team. Wardlow also served as head coach of the 18U Old Bridge Knights, winning two Central Jersey championships in the New York /New Jersey travel league. CCM participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX. For the Spring 2019 season, the current record for the Lady Titans is 42-10. The team also won the Garden State Athletic Conference championship for 2019.

Mendham’s Catherine Maresca Receives Cissy Laurey’s Award Nomination
atherine Maresca is the director of the Mendham Area Senior Housing, otherwise known as “MASH.” She was nominated for her compassion and dedication to serving Mendham’s senior community now, and well before she became Director of MASH four years ago. As the Director of MASH, Catherine provides residents of this low-income facility with the same quality of services they might receive in a facility with greater funding. She includes the entire senior community from both Mendham’s in all of the activities she organizes at the center in an effort to keep them informed and improve safety in their lives. She does this through hosting events that range from guest speakers from the IRS to explain social security to visits from the town Fire Captain to teach seniors how to use a fire extinguisher.
Her persistence in asking the Borough to post her events on the municipal website led to the creation of a page just for seniors where her events are highlighted links to the MASH site are provided.

By Elise Phillips Margulis n 2013 Lori Larrabee, owner of LL Show Jumpers LLC, embarked on a quest for a young showjumper and purchased a four year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding who she renamed Eddie Blue. Lori chose Eddie at the urging of her long-time professional rider, Devin Ryan of River Run Stables in Long Valley. He has built his riding career on developing young horses and can instinctively gauge their potential at a young age. Eddie showcased his talent as soon as Devin began working with him. He jumped remarkably high over fences, was extremely powerful and consistently performed well. He became an immediate sensation on the jumping circuit. In February of 2018, at the age of nine, Eddie won second-place in the $265,000 Longines Grand Prix CS15 at HITS Ocala in Florida. Eddie’s next triumph was in April when he won second place overall at the Longines FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) World Cup Jumping Final in Paris. It’s rare for a horse to place second at a World Cup during his first season of indoor events. He was also the only horse to not knock down a rail the entire four days of competition--quite a feat as he was just nine years old and up against the best horse and rider combinations in the world! Said Larrabee, recalling that moment, “Devin and Eddie jumped that final fence in Paris and I had the stunning realization of his 2nd place finish. Then I immediately got a call from a friend and top horse person in Europe. He said ‘Lori, for today you own the best show jumper in the world!’ My friend was referring to Eddie being the only horse to keep all the jumps up--a tenth of a second time penalty early in the competition was his only ‘fault’.” A month later Eddie and Devin took third place in the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CS14 in Devon, Pennsylvania. Devin praised Eddie as being a natural competition horse even as a youngster. “As soon as he walks in

the show ring his ears are forward and he performs. Even as a young horse he always knew where his feet were and where the poles were.” Following their performance in Paris, Eddie and Devin were placed on the shortlist for the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG). Horse and riders shortlisted are entered into “observation” competitions over the summer in order to assist U.S. Showjumping in choosing their final selections for WEG. Eddie and Devin, along with the U.S. team, won the bronze medal in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup in Sopot, Poland in June. They then jumped a double-clear (two jumps without any jump or time faults) in the Mercedes Benz Nations Cup at Aachen, Germany, one of the most prestigious venues in the world. Eddie and Devin went on to be part of the FEI WEG NetJets U.S. Jumping Team. He helped the U.S. jumping team to win Gold for the first time since the World Championships began in 1986. Eddie’s final competition of 2018 was the November $205,000 Longines FEI
Jumping World Cup in Toronto for the Hickstead Trophy. He placed second. Larrabee credits Eddie’s mental strength along with his athletic ability for his early career success. “He has always been more emotionally mature than other young horses. This mental toughness allowed him to tackle the highly technical aspects of the jumping courses he has faced.” Eddie and Devin had an amazing and beyond impressive year. When Eddie initially arrived at LL Show Jumpers he was a bit cranky and bossy when he wasn’t performing. That attitude served him well in the show ring. His confidence shines as he competes. Now he’s affectionate and enjoys scratches. He has formed a deep attachment with his human friends, enjoys performing and knows he can trust Devin. Eddie is a spectacular horse who was inducted into the Horse Hall of Fame at a very young age after a whirlwind year of astounding victories. He is a uniquely talented horse with a very bright future.

MJ Zonfrillo Authors The Little Girl Who Lost Her Words

By Fran LoIacono pon looking at MJ Zonfrillo’s website, her About Me section closes with ‘she takes her gentle nature everywhere she goes,’ after meeting her, it would be a hard fact to dispute. Zonfrillo is the person people are talking about when they say they want to make the most of their retirement by doing the most good. She wrote her book “The Little Girl Who Lost Her Words” as a tribute to her granddaughter Ava, who is sweet but very shy. Moved by her drive to have everyone love her granddaughter as much as she does, Zonfrillo wrote a short children’s book to help Ava and other kids who have a hard time speaking up. “She would just freeze, my husband picked her up from school one day and told me ‘it was like there was no one in the car’, so I wanted to give her something to remind her that it’s always safe to use your words.” She explained, scrolling through her phone showing off photos of her large and beautiful family. Zonfrillo talks about her work
with the same pride that she gives toward her grandchildren. This book clearly received the same care and love that she puts into whatever she does. Whether it be crocheting red hats for newborns with heart issues, decorating and sorting out her meditation garden, or volunteering in an assisted living facility. When asked why she chose to volunteer for an assisted living facility, MJ shrugs, as is her habit, and says that her mother was in the very facility and since they were so good to her, MJ thought it was only right to return the favor. In a market where children’s books are so commonplace, it is easy to overlook the

working as a business administrator for a middle school, she resigned and decided to make the best of her retirement. She joined a writers group called Just4Kids, once she found the time, she wrote her picture book. The Little Girl Who Lost Her Words, tells the story of Ava, who is a sweet but shy little kid who found herself unable to tell her grandfather how her day at school was when he picks her up. It hits Ava that she, quite literally, lost her words and is unable to speak. According to Zonfrillo, this is a habit that Ava has that breaks her grandmother’s heart. Zonfrillo likes to remind her granddaughter that it’s always safe to use your
words, this has become the family’s mantra for years since Ava was little. When asked if she was going to branch out of the children’s genre, she sheepishly admits to wanting to write a memoir but admits she does not have much of a life. The insanity of that statement can be disproved by any of her past jobs; such as when she worked for Pan Am airlines, allowing her to travel to up to a dozen countries, or the time she and her husband started their own coffee company. Regardless of wherever she goes, when asked if she had any advice for shy grownups her first response was her steadfast tried and true mantra; “it’s always safe to use your words.”

Freeholders And Bar Foundation Honor West Morris Mendham High School Mock Trial Champions

he West Morris Mendham High School mock trial team was honored this week by the Morris County Board of Freeholders and the Morris County Bar Foundation to mark their victory in the 2019 county mock trial competition, making them 14-time winners of the countywide event. The highly regarded team also was a Northeast Region finalist in the 2019 Vincent J. Apruzzese State High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Association. Under the direction of teacher and 20-year head coach Eric Heditsch and 16year volunteer attorney-coach William Connelly, West Morris Mendham won the county championship in an exciting finals competition versus the Morris County School of Technology. Morris-Sussex Superior Court Assignment Judge Stuart A. Minkowitz presided over the finals competition, held at the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown. Members of the West Morris Mendham team include seniors Joe Gulino, Ishaan Laroia,
Patrick Riss; juniors Greg Kerr, Nora Mulligan, Julia Trzesniowski; sophomore Audrey Sun and freshman Charlie Sager. The West Morris Mendham team has a history of excellence, including five state championships since the 2009-10 school year. “We are honoring these fine young people and their coaches for their dedication and hard work, which enabled them to win yet another county championship,’’ said Freeholder Tom Mastrangelo, who presented county certificates to each of the participating students. “The coaches have done an incredible job of creating such long-term, excellent program. “On behalf of all county residents, we congratulate all who were involved,’’ he added. Morris County Bar Foundation President Joseph Cadicina, whose organization ran the county competition, also presented the students with certificates. The mock trial competition seeks to increase comprehension of the American justice system, demystify the law, and help students develop and im-
prove basic life and leadership skills. Students take on various roles, such as attorneys, prosecutors, and witnesses to in the competition. Colts Neck High School placed first in the 2019 statewide competition, defeat-

By Steve Sears ou can tell when first speaking to Chef Sam Freund that the restaurant he and Steve Bussel opened in mid-October 2018 is very special. For a few reasons. “The name came from my father who passed away a couple years ago,” Freund says. “He was in construction and built the house my family grew up in. When my father, Mike, and my mother, Linda, cleared the land to build, he left one white birch tree in the yard with three branches branching out of it for all his
children, Erika, Michael, and I.” White Birch, located at 380 Route 206, 908-955-0443, www.whitebirchrestaurant. com) is, in Freund’s words, “spacious, I wanted a farm feel to it, has great natural light with the big windows in front.” The location is advantageous as well. “Thousands of cars pass us every day. Which is a blessing. I always say you never know who is going to walk through your door.” The landscape is beautiful, and modern farm pictures inside add to the atmosphere. In addition, their organic fresh veg-

Freund grew up in nearby Mansfield, and part of his childhood was going to the many area farms and getting fresh eggs from the local farms. “It’s unique to grow up that way,” he says, and it has fed his wonderful career. “Having a restaurant in north west New Jersey and to have the chance to utilize the farms around us, was a no brainer. That was my concept to use the local farms and to support them with the amazing, hard work they put in. The difference truly shows when you can pull vegetables right out of the ground.” Freund has a culinary degree from the New York Art Institute, and you can picture in your mind and feel the tingle in your taste buds that the cuisine and plate presentation are going to wow you. “Culinary is an art,” says Freund, adding that combining different foods and cook-

ing techniques to create flavors is the eye candy. He explains his “easel.” “Then when you create colors from vegetables like beets, peas, and different fruits, and then knife cuts to make things look sexy, you’re creating the picture. Everyone eats with their eyes first, and if you can match the flavor profile from the first instinct, it all comes together.” Freund’s resume is top notch. His first stop was One Hudson Catering and Eleven Madison Park in New York City, and next as Executive Chef for four years at One if by Land, Two if by Sea. He then went west to Denver and opened both TAG Raw Bar and TAG Burger Bar. He then returned in 2013 to the Garden State, creating seasonal tapas and monthly wine dinners for Long Valley’s Café & Wine Bar, and then opened Slamwich Scratch Kitchen in Madison, a crit-

Jamie Siminoff, Morristown Beard Alum, Returns to Inspire Current MBS Students

By Kimberly Redmond amie Siminoff, a successful inventor and entrepreneur, recently returned to his alma mater, Morristown-Beard School, to speak with students about the challenges he has faced, as well as remind them about the power of perseverance. The 1995 graduate is now the chief executive officer and founder of Ring doorbell systems, a company that is considered to be an industry leader in the home security market. During his May 10 visit, Siminoff also toured the private school’s campus, stopping in to see many of his former teachers, which left him feeling a little nostalgic.
“It’s exciting to be back,” the 41-year-old Chester native said. “This place has done a lot of special things for a lot of kids.” “The best part of my visit today was that although the school has changed and evolved, the feeling on campus felt the same,” he said. Siminoff credits his education from the school as being something that ultimately inspired him to invent Ring, a Wi-Fi enabled video doorbell company, in the garage of his California home back in 2013. Before coming to Morristown-Beard School as a sophomore, Siminoff attended public school and admits, “I was not a very happy kid overall...I was not on a good path.” But at Morristown-Beard, Siminoff said he began to flourish. From an early age, Siminoff had a desire to build things. His father co-owned a plant that forged steel pipes for oil refineries, and he would often use his father’s tools to take apart television sets and build small inventions in his basement after school. During his visit, he swung by to see Rich Timek, his former architecture teacher, and
someone who helped fuel his passion for “building stuff,” Siminoff said. Siminoff recalled his experiences in architecture class, saying that Timek “was a really special teacher.” “For our final architecture project, we had to build a model of a house, and that was probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. To this day, I am so proud of that project – it was so meaningful. I actually saw photos of it today when I visited Mr. Timek’s room,” Siminoff said. After graduating from Morristown Beard School, he later studied entrepreneurship at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. Though he ultimately found

After he graduated, he founded PhoneTag, the world’s first voicemail-to-text company, and Unsubscribe.com, a service that helped email users clean commercial emails from their inboxes. Though the products were “mildly successful,” he decided to shift his focus back to inventing. One afternoon, he was working in his garage on his next invention when he realized he couldn’t hear the doorbell because his cell phone didn’t have signal, so he’d wind up missing packages or people stopping by to see him. In 2013, he made an appearance on CNBC’s “Shark Tank” to pitch his business idea to the panel, but ultimately walked away from the show without any bites from the panel. Shortly after his television appearance, billionaire Virgin founder Richard Branson teamed up with Siminoff and worked with him to develop
the product further. In February 2018, Ring was acquired by Amazon for more than $1 billion – the second largest Amazon acquisition after Whole Foods. During a question-and-answer session with students, he fielded questions ranging from how he started his company to his favorite memories of Morristown Beard School to how he coped with his rejection on “Shark Tank.” He told students: “Being on ‘Shark Tank’ was like being in the Olympics, so to walk away without a deal was devastating. Now we’re the biggest company to ever appear on ‘Shark Tank,’ so that makes it a little bit easier.” Siminoff also gave some advice for budding entrepreneurs – “follow your heart.” “Money is a very bad form of motivation; it’s very shortterm. The most successful people I’ve met are people who are following their passion while trying to do something better for the world,” said Siminoff.

The Simply Protein method is all about lifestyle change: eating cleanly and avoiding processed foods, she says. “It’s a tool to get you where you need to go—a tool get you to your goal as quickly as possible,” she adds. “We want to see our clients on all whole foods. Processed foods are not going to get you to your goal.” Simply Protein is part of the Ideal Protein family of weight loss management and healthy lifestyle programs, with some 3,500 locations worldwide. It follows the Ideal Protein Ketogenic Weight Loss Protocol, a medically-developed method by Dr. Tran Tien, Chanh, which helps clients lose weight quickly by training the body to burn fat, not muscle. Per the Ideal Protein web site, a ketogenic diet is one that forces the body into a process called ketosis, whereby the body burns fats instead of carbohydrates for energy. “All it means is that you’re burning fat for fuel,” Jimenez says. “We’re not a high protein program; we’re a low carb program, and it works well for our clients.” Jimenez has run an event planning firm for many years. She became a Simply Protein advocate after losing her main client, which freed up her time, and after losing 50 lbs. through an Ideal Protein clinic in Livingston—which changed her life. “The owner and I had become friends,” she says. “She said, ‘I need someone and you have time on your hands. Come work
with me.’ She trained me, and I went for additional training with the company. I already knew the program.” Ideal Protein uses a four-step method: Phase 1 is about losing the weight; Phase 2 focuses on the ins and outs of how food affects the body; Phase 3 is all about better eating habits and achieving a healthier lifestyle; and Phase 4 is maintenance. While there are different versions of the keto diet easily found on social media, Jimenez notes that Simply Protein and the Ideal Protein protocols are used by medical professionals across the country; the company’s medical advisory board includes physicians and specialists from gastroenterology to obstetrics and gynecology to endocrinology and pharmacology. In fact, most Simply Protein clinics are now based in doctor’s offices and pharmacies. Simply Protein of Chester is one of the company’s few freestanding clinics. “We contract with [Ideal Protein] to use their products and their protocol,” she says. Jimenez has a pharmacist on staff to review her clients’ health profiles and to make sure none of the medicines they may be taking would interfere with the program’s requirements. This review is ongoing to keep up with clients’ changing medical information.
“The pharmacist gets all of our health profiles from clients. Some are on a myriad of different types of pharmaceuticals,” Jimenez says. “We send her those to review to make sure there’s nothing they’re taking that’s going to be an issue in the program.” Victories are counted in various ways. Jimenez adds up clients’ weekly weighins to assess how well they’re losing weight—walk-in clients lost a total of 157.5 lbs. in January, she notes. That includes only people who come into the office for the program; she also visits various companies in the region and conducts weigh-ins on site. She also assesses each member’s body mass index, or BMI, weekly to ensure clients are burning fat, not muscle. “It’s nice to see people losing the weight, but the non-scale victories are the ones we’re excited about,” Jimenez says, noting that eating healthier helps clients achieve more than just a smaller wardrobe. We see clients coming into the office who have just received a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis from their doctor, and while the initial goal is to lose weight, doing Ideal Protein and adopting a healthier lifestyle, in the long run, will help to lower their blood sugar into healthy, normal ranges. Simply Protein... continued from page 30 goal.” Lowering sugar intake levels can help people with a variety of health issues such as ADHD, autism and bipolar disorders as well. “We have a lot of doctors sending people our way,” she says. “They’ll walk in and say, ‘I don’t care how I look, but my health though is everything to me.’” Jimenez does not work with anyone under the age of 18 unless medically referred by a physician; she also does not take on clients having Type 1 Diabetes, as the keto protocol could be life threatening to them. “The last thing you want to do is harm anyone’s health with a weight loss protocol,” she says. Simply Protein provides a
variety of foods for its clients, from omelets to milkshakes to snack foods, and has varieties that are dairy-free and gluten-free. Jimenez works with clients who are vegetarian and vegan as well. Clients who have completed the program and are in Phase 4— maintenance—often come back to buy the food products because they really like them, she adds. The one thing that surprises her clients most is how often—and how much—they are directed to eat on the program, Jimenez says. “They eat more than normal,” she says. “I tell them, think about your body as a fireplace. The wood is food. The fire is your metabolism. If you put all the wood in the fireplace at once,
the fire goes up big and burns out,” she says. “But if you put in a little wood at a time, you get a consistent slow burn. This program sparks your metabolism to continuously

West Morris Central Girls Lacrosse Produces Six College Commitments

By Jerry Del Priore fter a 2018 season, in which the West Morris Central High School girl’s lacrosse team went 1-15, the Wolfpack posted a 11-7 record (5-2 in its new league, the Freedom Conference), along with six players committing to colleges. The positive results spelled a successful turnaround campaign for the program. Captain and the team’s lone senior, Emily Hoskin, who is ticketed to Division-III Moravian College, played a big part in WMC’s winning transformation. She registered 12 goals and three assists for 15 points, as well as forced four turnovers and scooped up 22 ground balls. But it was Hoskin’s leadership skills that helped guide the young squad back to respectability, according to first-year WMC girl’s lacrosse coach Michelle Poole. “Overall, the season was a pretty successful one,” Poole said. “We really worked well as a team and our cohesiveness grew throughout the season. We will miss Hoskin out there on the field, but I’m hopeful that next season will be even more successful since we are returning most of the team, in addition to getting some strong players back from injuries and younger players developing into even stronger players.” Hoskin, an 18-year-old midfielder, couldn’t be happier with her college choice. “I love the coaches from Moravian,” said Hoskin, who’s
planning to study nursing at the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, institution. “They were so nice. I met some of the girls on the team, and they were so outgoing.” Junior Caroline Compoli, who is headed to D-III Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in September of 2020, enjoyed an outstanding campaign, posting 31 markers and 27 helpers for 58 points. She also forced nine turnovers while picking up 14 ground balls. “Caroline is our biggest threat on attack,” said Poole, who sang the praises of her overall standout player. “She is able to put the ball in the back of the net, but can also find her teammates cutting to the goal, which is why she led the team in points. Her hustle to redefend adds to her versatility.” Junior Lauren Compoli, who scored 19 goals and had nine assists, is also slated for Gettysburg College. “Lauren is a strong midfielder who can outrun most people on the field,” Poole said. “She has a strong shot from almost any angle.” Junior Emma Ortiz is the third Wolfpack player committed to Gettysburg. She posted an impressive 11-6 record in net, with 105 saves. “Emma is a solid goalie and a vocal leader on our defensive end,” Poole said. “Her leadership skills are why she was voted captain by her peers.” Following three of her teammates to the Keystone
State, junior Maddie Ligos will be attending D-III University of Scranton, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Ligos played a solid defense, especially when it came to player-to-player coverage. “Maddie has shown herself as one of our best oneversus-one defenders,” Poole noted. “She causes turnovers and can get the ball up the field safely. She is also a vocal leader on the field.” Lastly, junior Sarah Miller will see the lax field at D-I Colgate University. Miller con-
trolled the faceoff with 110 wins, and found the back of the net 26 times, as well as chipping in with six assists. “Sarah is an all around versatile player,” Poole said. “She takes the draw and dominates the draw for us. She is a threat on attack and also a strong defender.” With six girls committed to the next level, it speaks volumes of the quality of WMC girl’s lacrosse, and there are sure more to come in the future for Coach Poole’s emerging program.

he Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. According to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the trail stretches across 14 states from Maine to Georgia. The total length of the trail is 2,192 miles. Millions of visitors traverse all or a portion of the trail every year. Many thru-hikers attempt to hike the entirety of the trail in a single season, beginning either at the trail head at Springer Mountain, GA or Mount Katahdin, ME. Those who have hiked the
trail estimate it typically takes five to seven months to do so in its entirety. Most hikers can average about three miles an hour and will travel between 12 to 24 miles a day. The highest elevation of the trail can be found at Clingmans Dome on the Tennessee/North Carolina Border. The lowest point on the trail snakes through Bear Mountain State Park in New York. Although the AP trail is a very long hiking trail, many day hikers do portions of it only and still can respectfully say they’ve hiked the AP trail.

our bookkeeping system is the financial heart and lifeblood of your business. When set up and operating properly, your books help you make smart decisions and seamlessly turn your financial data into useful information. Here are four key characteristics to build and maintain a healthy bookkeeping system: Select the proper accounting method There are two different methods for recording transactions: cash-basis and accrual-basis. In general, cash-basis records a transaction when payment is made where accrual-basis books the transaction upon delivery of the good or service. Cash-basis is easier to track and a useful option for smaller businesses and sole-proprietors. Where as larger businesses who buy from vendors on account (accounts payable) generally use accrual-basis accounting. Selecting the proper method affects any related financial transactions and how your financial statements are displayed. A correct approach will also include consideration of outside factors, including: IRS rules (businesses with more than $25 million in gross receipts must use accrual-basis), bank covenants, and industry standards. Once a choice is made, it can be changed but it must be properly reported to the IRS. Create an account structure that fits the company Every business has a chart of accounts included in their bookkeeping system. These
accounts sort the business’s transaction data into six meaningful groups. They are assets, liabilities, equity, income, cost of goods sold and other expenses. Each group will often have numerous accounts and sub-accounts associated with them. Having the right mix of accounts created and grouped in an organized fashion will help you properly classify transactions and prepare usable financial statements. The proper account structure for your company will mesh with your specific information needs. Enter accurate and timely transactions The value your data provides is dependent on each transaction being recorded correctly and on time. Entering transactions in the wrong account can cause major issues down the road. Financial reporting that is delayed can hide problems that need immediate attention. Some transactions are relatively straightforward, and some are more complex (like payroll, accruals and deferrals). It’s important to have
someone who understands both your business and the accounting rules enter your transactions in a timely fashion. In addition, a good month-end close process that involves reviewing each account, will find mistakes from the initial entries. Establish financial statements for decision-making The main financial statements are the income statement (income - expenses = gross profit), the balance sheet (assets = liabilities + equity) and statement of cash flow. Each statement has a specific purpose: A.) Income statement. The income statement shows company performance for a select period of time; typically monthly with a full year summary. At the end of each year the income statement restarts. B.) Balance sheet. The balance sheet displays a company’s overall health as of a certain date. It is perpetual. This means it doesn’t end until the business is closed or sold. It includes one line that summarizes the current year and prior year results from
the income statement. Statement of cash flow. This statement summarizes the inflow and outflow of cash. It ensures you know whether you have enough cash and the pattern of your cash position over time. If properly executed, your bookkeeping system will turn out accurate financial statements that can be used for several tasks - financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, raising capital, applying for a loan, tax reporting and decision making. Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience
O
n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience. Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-
periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both
those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event. Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf
ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering. “I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab. S c h wa b a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015. Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.” Schwab joined the
Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015. In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors. Schwab enjoys climbing at Randolph Climbing Center and thought it would be the perfect place to fundraise for Epic

Tire Safety Tips... continued from page 37 Accurately measure pressure. Low tire pressure can lead to poor handling and gas mileage, excessive wear and the possibility of tire failure. Remember to check your tire pressure at least once a month, especially before any long-distance trips, as the impacts of bumps and turns from everyday use can lead to normal air loss. For the most accurate reading, check your tires when the car is cool as driving can heat up the tires and lead to an inaccurate reading. You can find the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure on a sticker in your car’s door jamb or in your owner’s manual. If you need assistance, look for a store like Discount Tire, which offers complimentary air checks and tire safety
inspections. Rotate often. Tires wear differently depending on their location on the vehicle. Routinely rotating your tires spreads wear evenly, which helps maximize their handling, traction and stopping capabilities. To increase longevity and keep your ride as smooth as possible, rotate your tires every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. Inspect your trunk. Some newer vehicles now include tire inflation kits complete with puncture-coating sealants and air compressors, or run-flat tires that allow for continued driving with no air pressure for a short period of time rather than a traditional spare tire. Check your trunk to
see what your vehicle contains and make sure you have a roadside assistance plan in case of emergency. Avoid overloading. Overloading your vehicle can have a similar impact on your tires as driving on underinflated tires. The combination of warm roads and overloading, which is common during summer travel season, can lead to your tires potentially overheating and failing. Before loading your car, check the manufacturer’s loading recommendation, which can be found in the owner’s manual or on the door jamb sticker.
