Delbarton Baseball Star Bound for the Bronx

nthony Volpe, a Delbarton High School senior, will be sticking around the area for a few years. Volpe was drafted number 30 overall by the New York Yankees, his dream team to play for since he was just a baby playing tee ball. Volpe, a native of Watchung, has done a lot in the last few weeks. He graduated from high school, helped the Green Wave win their sectional championship, and now is living his dream of playing pro base-

ball. He originally committed to Vanderbilt University to play baseball but has now entered the process of signing with the Bronx based baseball dynasty. The short stop has been quite a standout over the years, both on and off the diamond. When it comes to baseball, the 5’11 monster has been named to All-Tournament Teams over eight times. He also holds numerous All-American titles. He is ranked number one in the state and number 34 in the

nation. The Yankees released a statement on June 3 after their first round selection. “He’s going to be a shortstop: the guy can hit, he can run, he’s got plus actions, he’s got really good hands, and he’s got a shortstop’s arm. He’s got tools. He’s been on the big stage with the USA national teams, so he’s got performance, and with a deluxe make-up, the kid brings it every day.” Damon Oppenheimer, the Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting said. In the Green Wave’s 2019 season, Volpe had 78 at bats.

He scored 36 runs in 39 hits. His RBI count is 33. Volpe hit four doubles, six triples, seven home runs, 17 stolen bases and accrued 11 walks. He helped the Green Wave secure their sectional championship on May 31. Congratulations poured in for Volpe after being drafted on June 3. His Delbarton coach, Bruce Shatel, tweeted out the following: “Watching this guy (Volpe) play for Delbarton Baseball has been a treat for all of us. #Yankees”. As news spread throughout the nation, Delbarton School posted photos of

Volpe on Facebook. Families of current and former Delbarton baseball players were quick to comment. Mollie O’Brien shared, “You don’t need to know much about baseball to know that when you are watching Anthony, you are watching something special. Truly amazing. Huge congratulations to the Volpe’s.” Volpe’s teammate Jack Leiter, son of New York Mets and New York Yankee pitcher Al Leiter, had also entered the MLB Draft. According to reports, Leiter told teams that he was unsignable as he will be heading to Vanderbilt

Change Your Genes Everyday Yep…

I

I’m Referring To Your Genes Not Your Jeans

mean you should probably change your jeans every few days as well, but that’s a discussion for another time and another day. You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life. You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true? What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! I know, I know… now you feel like you’ve been living a lie, but it’s time to wake up!! Check this out… Research shows that those who practice Meditation/Yoga can “steer” their DNA, reducing inflammation and reducing their risks for diseases like cancer. You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down… Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is acti-

vated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines. These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NF-Kb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to

take place. Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This long- term “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases. On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression! Boom… and there you have it! Now all you have to do is start Meditating to experience the benefits for yourself!

Mendham Celebrates End Of The School Year With Boro Bash

Kay he end of the school year is exciting and momentous as is, but the friendly folks from the Mendham Boro HSA (Home and School Association) made the milestone even better (and wetter) with their recent Boro Bash event on June 14th. The HSA is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all students in Mendham Borough public schools. What is sure to become a long lasting tradition that began just last year, this spectacular summer celebration kicked off the sunny season with tons of fun for families, friends, students, and supporters of Mendham’s Mountain View Middle School’s 8th grade graduating class at Hilltop Elementary School. The current HSA President Nancy Rodrigues shares, “I was Co-President last year and just loved the idea (of the Boro Bash) and the smiles on the kids’ faces.” Bringing back the Boro Bash for another go-round was a no-brainer, being that the first celebration was so successful and well-received by local residents. Rodrigues further explains, “The Boro Bash was started last year by a group of moms of the current 8th grade Mountain View Middle School class. The event was a

fundraiser for the 8th grade Washington, DC trip—a long tradition for our Mountain View Middle School 8th graders. The HSA was asked to support the initiative and we instantly saw this event as the perfect opportunity to celebrate our students’ hard work during the school year and to bring together our community before departing for summer break. When we saw how much fun the kids had last summer, we decided to start a tradition.” The Boro Bash went off without a hitch, with plenty to see, do, and explore. It was open to the public and the event was held at Hilltop Elementary School in the back field on Friday, June 14th, which was the last day of school. What did attendees to the Boro Bash enjoy? In a nutshell, lots of entertainment and plenty to eat. There was a live DJ to keep things upbeat with music to fill the air, a funfilled obstacle course, a creative game truck, a dunk tank, water slides, tons of games with take-home prizes, face painting and temporary tattoos, and lots of kid-friendly food like popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and popsicles. Food was included in the admission price and donations are still welcome, even in preparation for next year. Those who attended the Boro Bash are

sure to return again next year for another summer kick-off as only HSA can bring. For first time Boro Bash guests, this year’s event was the start of a summer tradition to return to year after year. What better way to close out the school year and get into “fun mode” for the less-stressed days of summer? Rodrigues was happy with how the Boro Bash turned out, “This was a fun event for the kids and the community. We loved that our township and Chester kids could come since all the children play on the same sports teams, etc. The area schools end on different dates, so it is not always possible to get everyone together on the same date for the event. But this year, the township got out

the day before, so we were happy that could work out. It was lovely to see many Mountain View Middle School students volunteer to assist at the event — doing face painting and tattoos, running games for the “little bashers,” etc. It was very sweet to see young kids helping and playing with the littlest ones,” she shares. The entertainment and energy the event brought to the graduating students and other Boro Bash attendees was amazing. Food, fun, and an all-around friendly atmosphere made the celebratory afternoon so special, sending the graduating students into the summer with a smile.

West Morris Central HS Receives $10,000 Donation from Local Family

L

ocal resident, Soonja Cho, recently donated $10,000 to West Morris Central High School on behalf of her late husband, Bernard. Born in Paju, South Korea in 1949, Mr. Cho lived with his two older brothers in Mapo, South Korea, while his two older sisters came to the United States first. He spent his childhood in South Korea in poverty. In 1969 he joined the Korean Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War before coming to the US and meeting his future wife Soonja. Mr. Cho and his wife raised four daughters in Hackettstown, NJ, all graduat-

ing from West Morris Central High School. Mr. Cho spent 36 years in NJ after leaving his homeland working at M&M Mars and raising a family. He tirelessly devoted his free time to volunteer efforts and often donating to local organizations. Upon his death in 2017, Mr. Cho asked his wife to sell his property and donate the profits to local service organizations. West Morris Central utilizes the funds to purchase a new brick welcome sign in front of the school which was dedicated to Mr. Cho and his family on June 10.

Mendham Students Raise More Than 3K for Childhood Cancer Research

By Jason Cohen endham Elementary School students recently came together and raised more than $3,000 for childhood cancer research. All of the proceeds went to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF). ALSF raises awareness and money for childhood cancer research. For more information, visit www.alexslemonade.org. On June 7, Mendham Township Elementary School held its 11th annual Lemon Ball fundraiser. The event was for the second through fourth grade and in total, 176 students attended. According to School Counselor Carolyn Johnson, who organized the program, $3,002 was raised. “I think they’re happy to give,” Johnson said. “These students are all about it. As soon as our students hit second grade, it’s wow we get to go to the lemon ball this year. The evening featured food, music and fourth grade peer leaders ran different games for the younger children. While it got a little emotional when they watched a video about Alex, it was really a fun filled event for a good cause, Johnson said. “Overall it’s a celebration of life,” Johnson commented. “This is not so much of a fun dance and a night out, but

it’s for a great cause. The students absolutely love it. Were all kind of forming a team and alliance for such a great cause.” When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand”, held with the help of her older brother Patrick, raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause. In 2004 when Alex passed away at the age of 8—her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. Since Alex set up her first lemonade stand in 2000— truly exemplifying the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”, they have raised more than $150 million. That money has helped to fund nearly 1,000 cutting-edge research projects

Cops, Kids, and Cones Encourages Positive Child/Police Engagement

By Michele DiPasquale ny day and, let’s face it, every day, is a perfect day for ice cream. And the Mendham Creamery at 2A Hilltop Road in Mendham is the perfect locale to indulge your frozen sweet tooth! Many came out to a newly classic neighborhood event on Tuesday evening, June 18th, where local police from Mendham Borough and Mendham Township were serving scoops from local resident Bud Murphy’s Mendham Creamery while they hung out with kids and families. Sponsored by the Mendham Creamery, Mendham Borough Police, Mendham Township Police, and Mendham Borough PBA 384, this was the second year for Cops, Kids, and Cones; last year, over 600 scoops of Mendham Creamery Ice Cream were devoured, and this year, Murphy hoped to surpass that number. “It’s an incredible event to be a part of and we hope that it continues for years to come,” shared Mr. Murphy. Cops, Kids, and Cones is a joint event between the Mendham Township and Mendham Borough Police. Police officers helped serve ice cream and spent time chatting and mingling with local children and their parents, even allowing kids to sit in some of the

Morristown Urges Pedestrian Street Smarts with New Campaign TransOptions hope is that with each and every Street Smart campaign, they get one step closer to zero fatalities on the roadways. TransOptions President Dan Callas said, “TransOptions applauds Morristown for its continuous focus on pedestrian safety, and we are committed to helping them in these efforts.” Between 2015 and 2017 there were 74 crashes involving pedestrians in Morristown. In 2017, a pedestrian was struck an average of every 15 days in Morristown. Thirty-nine percent of pedestrian-involved crashes were attributed to drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. Also, 34 percent of pedestrians struck were in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. The object of the program is to strike a balance between pedestrians who walk through town and effective movement of vehicle traffic that moves alongside them. It continued on page 9

Model A Club Takes Cars Out on Historical Back Roads

By Jane Primerano embers of the Model A Ford Club of New Jersey drive their cars on modern roads all the time, but they rarely get a chance to drive them on the roads the cars were made for. On Saturday, June 8, courtesy of the Morris County Park Commission they had that chance. The Commission opened the Columbia Trail from Bartley Road to the Hunterdon County line to a group of Model As, and two Model Ts. The cars staged at the former Toys R Us warehouse and traveled the local roads to the trailhead. The park’s trail maintenance crew worked for days to get the surface ready for the vehicles and cut low-hanging tree branches. The commission theoretically closed the trail to hikers and bikers, but people lined the route to wave to the cars. “The trail is better than it’s ever been,” park commissioner and club member Richard Seabury said. “We had 140,000 people on the trail last year, but this is the first time we had Model As and Ts. His Model T station wagon (also called a woody wagon)

was the lead car. Club member Ed Saniewski of Denville, explained the term “station wagon” comes from the vehicles hoteliers would send to the railroad station to pick up guests. Seabury called his wagon a “depot hack.” The Model T traversed the trail with three passengers, but no luggage, although Seabury keeps tools in the back. His son, Brad, drove. “The rail trail is unique,” the elder Seabury said. “It replicates what driving was like back then.” He said Susan Yeager of the Model T Club of America said there are not many rail trails that can accommodate cars because of the bridges. The bridges on the Columbia Trail are sturdy enough for the cars, although Brad Seabury was a little concerned about the width of one of them. The wagon made it with inches to spare. The surface of the trail was fairly smooth, with new gravel laid in several places. Most of the stream crossings are bridges, but there is one small steep curve where a bridge would be impractical. along the trail in Hunterdon County as well. It is an additional eight miles from the county line to High Bridge. However, the trail in Hunterdon County is not in as good shape as in Morris

County, he said, and Hunterdon’s park system did not seem willing to cooperate. He hopes they will in the future.

Dental Implants & Your Gums

H

ow gums (professionally known as gingiva) affect your dental implants is a very broad & diverse topic, but is extremely important. Without healthy gums, the chances of dental implants failing is significantly increased. The most intuitive aspect of how your gums interact with dental implants is cleanliness. Just like natural teeth, if you don’t have good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, etc.), you are putting the dental implants at risk of failing. Plaque contains bacteria, and bacteria release toxins. The toxins erode the gums and underlying bone. The more the bone loss, the more damaged the dental implant / bone interface becomes, and eventually you may lose the implant. You may have no feeling or sensation in your mouth as this process starts or continues. Another arena of gums and dental implants includes the type of gum tissue present. Basically, there are two types of gum tissue: keratinized (thick, non-mobile gum tissue) and non-keratinized (also known as mucosa), which is thin and mobile. This quality of gum tissue around dental implants (also known as “biotype”) is extremely important. Thick, non-mobile gum tissue is absolutely preferred over thin, mobile gingiva around dental implants. It is more resistant to abrasion from eating,

toothbrushing, and general activity. The more mobile the gum tissue, the more susceptible the dental implant becomes to failure since the gum may erode from noxious stimuli. As the gum recedes, the bone will follow, and a negative pathway of bone loss around your dental implant ensues, putting your dental implant at risk of failing. All too often I need to speak to new dental implant patients about the quality of gum tissue described above (biotype). It is not unusual for patients to be interviewing multiple dentists to determine who they want to provide their dental implant care. If they have already visited one or two other offices and then come to me, they are skeptical when they hear me speaking about this topic if it applies to them. I understand this skepticism, but it is a very important and critical area that should not be overlooked. Patients are entitled to know about this often overlooked topic, because more often than not it will affect the health of their implant over time. I have had to remove many implants that failed due to this problem. It is important to know that the quality of gum tissue can be corrected around dental implants, but ideally you would want to address it before the dental implants are placed. Gum grafting procedures are usually the best way to improve the situation. A person’s health is another important

Callanan Now Pastor of Drakestown Church

John Callanan recalls once talking with the cook from a container ship which brought goods to different ports, and required the crew to be on board for long stretches of time. “The cook’s daughter was completing her studies as a concert pianist and was already building worldwide recognition for her talent. His son was a practicing physician. The cook was very proud of their accomplishments, and of the fact that his toil at hard labor and years away from home made it all possible. Yet, he carried deep sadness over the fact that he was never home and missed all their significant milestones,” said Callanan. As a chaplain for those on container ships pulling into a port after months at sea, at a hospice for those at the end of life and in ministry in many other settings, Callanan will tell you that the most rewarding part of his 34 year career has been hearing stories and helping, comforting those who tell them. Callanan said that his call to ministry has never been static,but is his own on-going journey. He is now in his latest step of that journey. Although first asked to

serve as interim pastor, Callanan officially became the pastor of Drakestown United Methodist Church at the beginning of this month. Callanan got his calling to be a minister 38 years ago. He grew up in the Harmony United Methodist Church in Stillwater. “Our family life revolved around the church,” he explained. For Callanan, it was the place where he felt accepted and trained to be a leader. “For me, as a young person, the experience of God’s grace was transformative and powerful,” he said. He wanted to help others experience it. Although he considered going into other fields, like computers or forestry, he always came back to the church as a career choice. He said his mother told him that she was never surprised by that. Callanan graduated from Lycoming College Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (Cum Laude). He got his Master of Divinity Degree (Cum Laude) from The Theological School at Drew University in Madison. Throughout his career, he has sat with many in difficult situations. He remem-

bered visiting a hospice patient who was a leader and mentor in her church, but who became depressed and angry at God because her prayers for recovery were not answered. Callanan would visit, listen to her life stories, and talk about faith. After her passing, Callanan was moved when a note from her family told him how much he had helped. “Helping others access the hope and inspiration of their faith to give them strength to persevere and find peace in the face of adversity is a unique privilege that traverses very sacred space,” he said. Talking about his latest role, that of returning to pastoral ministry, Callanan finds it rewarding to be back. He was looking for his next chaplaincy assignment when the District Superintendent of the Skylands District of the United Methodist Church asked, earlier in the year, if Callanan would like to be the interim pastor of a church. That assignment became permanent this month. Callanan believes his variety of experiences is something special he brings to pastoring a church. Callanan’s family includes his wife, Ellen and their 5 1/2year old orange and black

The 49th Annual Morris County 4-H Fair

Kay his July marks the impressive 49th year that the Morris County 4-H Fair has been delighting local residents with a wide array of amusement, activities, action, and sheer appreciation for the 4-H. Their motto of “Making the world a better place one member at a time” is something those personally involved take to heart, and this fun-filled Fair is a celebration of this sentiment in all its splendor. From July 18-21, folks can come on down to Chubb Park in Chester, New Jersey for wholesome family-friendly fun, lots of activities and attractions, and enough food to fill ‘em up for the day. According to Kelly Dziak, the Morris County 4-H Program Associate, “The Fair typically attracts about 20,000 people from all over New Jersey and the surrounding areas.” With so many people coming together and celebrating, it is no surprise that the 4-H means a great deal to the community. “Hundreds of volunteers come together to make the Fair possible each year,” says Dziak, so it is a community effort resulting in entertainment and enjoyment for all. As per Dziak, “The Fair is run by the Mor-

ris County 4-H Association which is made up of 4-H volunteers, club leaders, and parents. Chris Hallihan is a Board member for the Association, a proud parent of two active 4-H club members, and the Entertainment Coordinator for the Fair.” Dziak’s role is to advise the 4-H Association, oversee and manage the many volunteers, coordinate the various events happening during the Fair, and provide office support in setup, running, and take-down of the Fair. The Morris County 4-H office is also supported by Kathy Murarik (4-H Program Associate), Bridget Cirillo-Kratt (Administrative Assistant), and several summer interns. It takes a village, as they say, and Morris County proves just that as they execute this extraordinary event. So, what can visitors expect this July at the Morris County 4-H Fair? The summer scene will be spectacular, with amusing and educational animal shows (dog, goat, horse, poultry, rabbit, cavy, small animals), live music and other performances and demonstrations, tasty food including BBQ chicken and root beer floats, rides (hot air balloon, pony, hay), petting zoos, contests (watermelon eating, cake decorating, dress-a-pet), and much more. This year, some never-be-

fore seen attractions include the new 4-H clubs showcasing their projects, including the Busy Bees 4-H Beekeeping Club and the World Exploration 4-H Culture Club. Plus, a local woodcarver will be demonstrating his artistic skills to the public, a real must-see. The specific events schedule can be found

Grilled Pierogies with Steak and Chimichurri Recipe courtesy of Susie Bulloch of “Hey Grill Hey” Pierogies: 1 package Mrs. T’s Classic Onion Pierogies 1-2 tablespoons olive oil Tri-Tip Steak: 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tri-tip steak (2-3 pounds) Chimichurri Sauce: 1 cup fresh Italian parsley, packed 1/4 cup fresh cilantro 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 3-4 garlic cloves, peeled 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper To prepare Pierogies: Toss pierogies in olive oil.

To prepare Tri-Tip Steak: In small bowl, combine salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder; season steak on all sides. To make Chimichurri Sauce: In food processor, pulse parsley, cilantro, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, red pepper, salt and black pepper until well combined but small pieces of herbs remain. Pour into serving bowl, cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Heat grill to 400 F for two-zone cooking. Grill steak over direct heat 3-4 minutes per side. After flipping steak, place pierogies over indirect heat. Close grill lid and cook 3-4 minutes. Move steak to indirect heat and move pierogies to direct heat. Remove from grill when pierogies are golden brown and steak is cooked to preferred doneness. Allow steak to rest before slicing. Layer one pierogy, one slice steak and drizzle of chimichurri sauce to assemble each bite.

Vets Summer Fest Aug. 10 Benefits Homeless Veterans

he Annual Vets Summer Fest is an event that is a lot of fun, but with a very important cause. There are homeless veterans throughout the nation and New Jersey is no stranger to this issue. For nearly a decade this event has raised over $150,000 for homeless veterans and Operation Chillout. A donation-oriented event, the festival takes place this year on Saturday Aug. 10 at Vasa Park in Mount Olive. The day runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is family-friendly with kids activities included. There is also a motorcycle run, car show, food, beer and wine, vendors (Craft Show and Direct Sales), and live music all day. Operation Chillout is an all-volunteer outreach dedicated to ending to the crisis of homelessness for veterans, men and women throughout New Jersey and parts of NE Pennsylvania by promoting awareness of the multi-faceted nature of poverty and homelessness and advocating for sustainable solutions and programs serving the needs of the poor, addicted, abused and homeless to improve the quality of

their lives leading to permanent change and independent living. Switching things up a bit this year Vets Fest will be featuring national headliner the Dana Fuchs Band mid afternoon. Opening for Dana will be local favorites Atlanta Cafe Band. Capping off the night on stage will be B-Sides. “Support for this event has been amazing over the years,” said Tony DeStefano, one of the organizers and a veteran himself. “People are so giving. Whatever we can do to help our homeless brothers and sisters we want to do. And money talks, let’s face it. The money raised from this event goes a long way in making that happen.” Two of Fuch’s albums, Bliss Avenue and Songs from the Road reached the Top 10 of the Blues Album Chart of Billboard magazine. Fuchs is known for her heart-felt live performances. The festival is sponsored by Millington Bank, Transwestern, Navitend, PNC Bank, WRNJ, WXPN, and Joe Hirsh Productions. Morris County School of Technology and Main Street Philanthropy Announce Revolutionary Program Launch of “The Main Street Philanthropy Academy”

M

orris County School of Technology and Main Street Philanthropy launched a unique partnership that created a dynamic, real world experience in charitable giving and fundraising. This 10-week process brought together small groups of students, their classroom teacher, a Main Street Philanthropy Ambassador, generous donors and front-line charities, all of whom will benefit from this remarkable collaboration. Using donated funds and money they raise themselves, students identified local charities whose missions align with the students’ charitable passions. Working in small groups, students examined these organizations’ tax returns and evaluated their effectiveness in accomplishing their charitable purposes. They interviewed officers and board members and then decided which organizations are having the greatest impact. Eventually, they will deliver checks to those charities that are doing the best job in the community.

Spearheaded by Kerrie Bellisario, Academy for Design Teacher and Christine Hietanen, English Teacher, both at Morris County School of Technology and Yale Levey, the Main Street Philanthropy ambassador and co-creator of the organization, this program launched as part of a cutting-edge new program spreading throughout the country. “Main Street Philanthropy gives our students an authentic learning opportunity to practice and hone 21st century skills--communication, collaboration, and critical thinking--while exploring real-world situations, said Christine Hietanen. “When the students began working on the Main Street Philanthropy project, they came to life, realizing that with the tools and training in this program, they could bring their collective desires to make a difference in their communities a reality. This program is the spring board students need as they discover and explore their own sense of agency,” said Kerrie Bellisario. Morristown Church Gets New Minister

by Elsie Walker ecently, Rev. Luana Cook Scott recalled her family’s “legend” of how her mother got her father fired from a job. It was the 1950s. Before he had his own practice, her father, a physician, worked for a coal company. He was fired when they found out Cook Scott’s mother protested the segregation of a local pool. It was that same racism, and also sexism, which they found “spewing” from the pulpits of churches back then, that drove the family away from attending church. However, Cook Scott would return to the church, even making it her career. Now the new pastor of the Morristown United Methodist Church, Cook Scott said, “my faith compels me to speak against the prejudice and injustice of the world.” Originally working for a private company in New York City, as a Case Manager for medically fragile children on Medicaid, Cook Scott graduated from Drew Theological School in Madison in 2000; she was 30. She became an elder in the United Methodist Church in 2006. She has served various churches, with her latest appointment starting this month at the Morristown church.

However, as mentioned, the church was not part always a part of her life. “I was raised by parents who had found the church lacking in basic morals. They had experienced racism and sexism spewing from the pulpit, and chose to teach their children ethics and morals in the home and did not bring us up in a religious environment,” explained Cook Scott. Still, as she got older, Cook Scott found she wanted a connection to a religious community. “But every time I tried out a new church, I was met with the same experience my parents had, just new forms of prejudice. In my generation, it was vile language about sexuality being spewed from the pulpit,” she shared. She found the Bible being used as a tool of division and she was repulsed by that. Then, one day in 1994, she went into the small Washington Square United Methodist Church in Greenwich Village, and it changed her life. What she found there was “Christian hospitality”. “They welcomed everyone, and I mean everyone: billionaires, the homeless, artists, attorneys...everyone. They didn’t merely tolerate your presence; they rejoiced in it! This was a game changer. I had found was I was looking for. I was in semi-

nary three years later. I wanted to be able to share the love of God and had found out I wasn’t the only one who felt it should be offered so freely,” she said. When asked what she likes most about being in the ministry, Cook Scott said that it is hard to narrow it down to one thing, since she loves her job. She noted she does enjoy when she can make a difficult Bible passage understandable and “also in giving people permission to say ‘I don’t have all the answers’, by modeling the behavior. Pastors so often feel that they have to have all the answers, but no one has all the answers. So, I err on the side of grace and humility, and I have found there is great strength and integrity in that level of vulnerability. You will often hear me say ‘I don’t know the answer, let’s find it together.’.” That attitude is also expressed in what she believes she brings to the churches she serves. “I’m an encourager” she said. “I believe God calls each of us to encourage one another and to build each other up… and that is what a religious community should do, starting with the pastor.” Cook Scott’s family includes her daughter, Amelia, who will be attending Morris-

town High School in the fall, plus a 14 year old chocolate lab named Sophie, and two lanky black cats, Alexander and Angelica. The pastor likes to hike when she has the time. Also, coming to Morristown brings her closer to another passion, to practice with, and officiate for, the Jerzey Derby Brigade. a competitive women’s roller derby team. There she is known as “Pastor Bedtime”. The team meets at Inline Morristown rink which is about 1000 feet from the church.
