‘Canstruction’ Exhibition Open In Morris Museum
he New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and its local AIA Newark and Suburban section annual design exhibition to benefit local food bank programs, Canstruction, will be on display from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2 at the Morris Museum in Morristown. CCM Computer Science Student Receives NSF Grant For AI Research
oseph Gatto, a computer science student at County College of Morris in Randolph, recently gained resume-building experience as a National Science Foundation grant recipient, delving into the world of artificial intelligence. Gatto, of Morristown, was presented with a $5,000 grant through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program. With that grant, he was able to conduct research this summer into machine learning at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In addition, he was provided with free room and board at NJIT. Along with nine other students from New Jersey and New York, Gatto spent 10 weeks working with NJIT Professor Usman Roshan on artificial intelligence. Gatto’s part of the project focused on deep learning algorithms that allow computers to understand im-
ages better. “If it weren’t for CCM, I would not have had the opportunity to participate in this research project,” said Gatto. “Its reputation for being a top community college in New Jersey helped me tremendously.” A presentation of Gatto’s research work at NJIT can be found on YouTube athttp://tinyurl.com/y7zgsopp/.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier. Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Morris Libraries Expand Its Digital Library Program
I
By Jason Cohen n order to keep up with the ever evolving technological times, libraries have had to adapt. Now, residents and teachers in Morris County can access books on their personal devices, without leaving home. Now that the school year has started, MAIN (The Morris Automated Information Network) consortium libraries are making things more appealing for youngsters and even adults who are tech savvy. MAIN consortium library card holders now have the opportunity to use the TumbleBooks Library to access digital children’s story books, read along eBooks, videos, games and more. In order to help grant access to services like Tumblebooks. MAIN Executive Director Phillip Berg feels this will not only help library membership, but enhance education. “The MAIN member librar-

ies felt it important to help support the efforts of teachers and school libraries by not just offering a limited courtesy library card to teachers, but a full access one,” Berg said.“ Educating our young people is an important endeavor which (public libraries) can and should help as members of the greater local community.” Additionally, K‐12 teachers can register for a full service library card in the town in which they teach if they do not already reside in the MAIN public libraries service area. TumbleBookLibrary is a curated database of children’s e-books, available by subscription to Elementary Schools and Public Libraries around the world. Library users may access TumbleBooks by visiting a participating library’s website or installing the app on their smartphone. Users will be

asked for their library card number to verify their access. Visit your library’s website for a link or go to: http://bit.ly/maintumblebooks. Emily Weisenstein, head of youth services at Madison Public Library, who co‐chairs the MAIN Youth Services Committee, feels this new app is a step in the right direction. “It is a fantastic resource for our patrons,” Weisenstein said. “They offer a wide range of juvenile eBooks that children can access at anytime, anywhere – all they need is an Internet connection and a library card. I especially like their selection of interactive picture books, which allows children to read along with some of their favorite titles. It’s fun, easy to use, and popular.” MAIN libraries joined the rest of the country in celebrat-
ing September as National Library Card Signup Month. MAIN was originally created in 1980 when several of Morris County’s libraries were automated with a shared computer system. Today, it is now a consortium of 38 public libraries located in Morris, Somerset and Warren Counties. Its mission is to lead and encourage collaboration, resource sharing, staff development and innovation by providing high quality, cost effective shared services to member libraries for their communities. MAIN libraries serve more than half a million residents of all ages. Patrons of member libraries have access to more than 2.8 million items including eBooks, eAudiobooks, Blu-rays, DVDs, music, museum passes, videogames and books.

Two Organizations Recognized For Improved School Climate And Culture
F
or For the second time, a national organization has applauded the work being done by the College of Saint Elizabeth and United Way of Northern New Jersey to help New Jersey’s K-12 students learn and succeed by improving the climate and culture in local schools. The American Psychological Association awarded its John Kalafat Community Program Award to the two organizations for their partnership on the School Culture and Climate Initiative, which is involved in 40 schools across the region serving 17,000 students. The initiative is considered one of the most comprehensive in New Jersey for both improving school climates and promoting students’ health and wellness from kindergarten through 12th grade. The association chose to
recognize the initiative as it exemplifies the work of former Rutgers University professor and psychologist Dr. John Kalafat in building bridges between research and improving the world, creating a positive impact on communities and excellence in crisis intervention, according to the award committee. Across northern N.J., schools have turned to this initiative to help address what leading experts, the most respected studies and New Jersey’s anti-bullying law say is the foundation for all learning – a healthy school climate. United Way and CSE work with schools to evaluate their culture and climate, uncover the conditions contributing to the environment and collaborate to create a roadmap toward sustainable improvement. Both organizations also offer

complementary programs that expand beyond the initiative to reach an even wider network of school professionals. United Way’s School Support Network provides free training and networking opportunities for educators across the region to learn and share best practices in creating a positive school climate. The Center for Human and Social Development at the col-

The center also houses a school culture and climate assessment lab which provides a school climate survey and data assessment support to schools.

The Olive Group Offers Comprehensive Concierge Level Aging Life CareTM Management Services To Families With Elder Care Needs
F
By Rita Quade amily problems may vary from one to another, but a common thread that runs through many of them is care of the elderly, a problem as old as time. Today’s seniors are living longer, and this aging population faces societal and cultural changes along with financial downturn and the added complications of mobility and divorce. Since 2006, Gladys F. Harris has dealt with this issue through The Olive Group LLC, a member of the Aging Life CareTM Association, formerly The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, making individually tailored recommendations to provide quality care and personal attention to all needs – physical, emotional, psychological and financial. “Our objective is to enable the elderly to have the quality of life that they envisioned for these years,” explained Gladys, who holds advanced degrees in Health Systems Management and Geriatric Care Management. She came upon this career quite by accident, having retired from a successful corporate career and gone back to college to prepare for a career change. While doing library research on a graduate project, she noticed that an elderly woman nearby was having a problem trying to locate her medical site on a computer. The woman was carrying several medications, but they were out-dated, a situation that can
be dangerous. “We worked with the medications that were still valid,” Gladys said. “I printed out the information that she needed and recommended she speak to her doctor. “As it turned out, she gave my phone number to
others who also needed help, and my phone started ringing. I found that each community is different in its aid to the elderly, and so it’s necessary to assess the maze of services and identify those needed.” “At The Olive Group we are sensitive to what a family is going through and the problems that they face. We find every available resource and see how it works for the individual, developing a cost effective plan to coordinate and monitor supportive services. Our mission is to provide peace of mind for all of the family, hence our name, which signifies peace.” Ms Harris’ primary client is the baby boomer generation, the couples whose children are of college age but whose parents also need help. “Our service enables the baby boomer to focus on his or her job, reducing the pressure they face, along with the guilt, frustration and anxiety they of-
ten feel for not being able to give 100 percent either to their work or the family situation.” Employers also benefit from this service, reducing costs associated with employee absenteeism and turnover. “I am constantly touring assisted living establishments,” Gladys said, “asking myself, ‘Is this a place where I would feel comfortable for my own parent?’ I visit my clients weekly, arriving unannounced and unscheduled, as a personal friend, so that I can observe first hand the care that they receive and see that all their needs are being met. “Things happen for a reason,” she continued. “I had been working on an MBA-Health Systems Management to pursue hospital administration, but that encounter in the library was instrumental in my deciding to parlay my business background to focus on the needs of the elderly and to try to make a difference in someone else’s life. “I see every client as an opportunity to find the missing pieces in a big puzzle. I love working with the elderly.” Gladys F. From The Mayor’s Office
More Myths Explored By Morris Township Deputy Mayor
L
By Louise Johnson ast month, we busted four popular myths concerning Morris Township property taxes, redevelopment impacts, and differences between Morristown and Morris Township. Visit www.morristwpgop.org for the full story. As Morris Township deputy mayor, this month I will address three more. Myth #5: Renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines save money and are good for the environment. Fact: While we are all eager to find the “silver bullet” that will reduce fossil fuel consumption, in many cases, the promise of renewable energy benefits outweighs the actual delivery of results. Benefits
from solar panels located on Morris County sites within Morris Township have not justified the expenditures, and long-term environmental risks are associated with panel degradation. Wind turbines are ill-advised in populated areas due to health concerns related to noise pollution and visual drawbacks. The township plans a pilot of LED street lights with JCPL to save energy. Benefits and risks of other energy efficiency options are being explored. All of the facts related to any new energy sources will be carefully vetted before decisions are made. Myth #6: If you don’t pass a Sanctuary City ordinance, you’re not a welcoming place. Fact: We all want safety for

our children, good neighbors, and to offer a helping hand to those in need. Yet buried in the rose-colored text of proposed sanctuary city ordinances is the stipulation that local police cannot check immigration status of suspected felons. This runs contrary to public safety tenets and to the laws of our nation. Morris Township is already a hospitable, welcoming, fair and safe community as our recent Safest Cities and Best Places to Live designations attest. We actively enforce existing protections against discrimination in current laws and practices. Our Crime Prevention Unit goes to great lengths to help all of our citizens stay safe and informed. In addition to supporting Neighborhood Watch groups,

Fall In Love With The Morristown News’ New Magazine-Style
W
By Cheryl Conway elcome to the new Morristown News publication. Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out. The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine. “The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.” New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 municipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses. The Flanders couple began their newspaper company MJ (My Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly. That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a new view on
media,” says Nicastro. Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News. “I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle. This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers get what they want to keep the papers longer which will help advertisers.” While photos have always been included, the publications attract readers with a larger colorful photo on the front cover. “It allows us to feature a large local photo on the front cover and as well as offer our advertisers some other advertising options,” says Nicastro, adding that he is pleased with all the positive feedback he has received so far. “I have to say in my 30 years of publishing I have received more positive responses to the

Rather, at the local level, residents are concerned more about property taxes, amenities and public safety for themselves and their families. Good local government doesn’t happen by chance. It happens when voters elect leaders competent in finance,
management, law, public health and safety, and economic development. While anyone can run for office, one bad decision by inexperienced leaders can have disastrous long-term effects on a community. magazine format than anything else I have done,” he says. “I even received calls from many small businesses looking to advertise.” Here are a couple of the emails received applauding the change: “ I love the new look of paper, so much easier for people to take with them! Awesome! Liz M, Mt.Olive. Dear Editor: Thank you for such a wonderful Wayne Hometown News booklet. It ‘s so convenient to hold and very legible. The articles are interesting and quite informative, the advertisers are great. Keep up the good work. Camille. While style has changed, content will still focus on all positive news local to the community- from schools to government, people, organizations, places of worship, libraries, non-profit groups, volunteer services, children’s programs, scouts and fundraisers. Each issue hopes to draw in more input from readers and timely topics. For example, “For our Valentines issue I would like to have readers submit letters on how they met their loved ones,” he

says. For Memorial Day, readers will be encouraged to send in photos of loved ones lost in the service; and for Veterans Day, readers can submit photos of their family members who served. Readers are welcome to send in photos from Halloween to be posted online at www. mypaperonline.com. For the November issue, readers are asked to submit names of veterans as well as photos and information regarding when and where they served. Any story ideas about giving or helping others, with Thanksgiving coming up, are also welcome. Email photos and ideas to: readers@newviewmg.com by Nov. 1. Offering free publications to all residences and businesses, the company depends on paid advertising. Contact Nicastro at 800-691-7549 or joe@ newviewmg.com. “Push To Walk” Celebrates 10 Years Of Serving
T
By Anastasia Marchese his year marks a decade of service for the nonprofit, “Push to Walk.” For ten years the organization has been helping people with spinal cord injuries reach beyond their diagnosis to become more independent and strong, both physically and mentally. The past year has brought some big changes to the nonprofit as they recently relocated and also hired a new Executive Director David Font. In 2007, “Push to Walk” (PTW) first opened in Bloomingdale; 18 months later they already needed to expand to meet their growing client base and relocated to a larger facility in Riverdale. Then just last year they once again moved to an even larger facility to be better able to serve their clients. According to their website, “Since 2007, Push to Walk has served more than 370 families and 176 clients, all motivated to work to enhance their quality of life.” Often insurance companies will only cover a predetermined amount of physical therapy sessions a year, or will choose to stop paying for treatment if it seems the
patient’s progress has reached medical expectations. PTW thinks beyond predetermined expectations to what can be possible. Its motto is “Redefining possibilities for the spinal cord injury and paralysis community,” and it really speaks to its mission to support and encourage those with paralysis and help them to become their fullest selves and not to let them be defined by their condition.

Cynthia Templeton founded PTW with her son Darren after he had suffered an injury to his spinal cord back in 2004. During his treatment and recovery process Darren had found that he benefited greatly from a gym based one-on-one personal training program located in California. Participating in that program gave them the idea to start a similar one in NJ. Last year Templeton continued on page 17

continued from page 16 chose to move out of the director position in favor of her new role. Font has now been with PTW for the past seventh months and is pleased to be organizing the 10th anniversary events taking place throughout 2017. Every month of 2017 PTW has hosted an Open House where the public can come in and see their facility and clients at work. People can call ahead and sign up for a tour or just come over during those hours. Other events and fundraisers coming up this year are also listed on their website. According to Font, “Once their benefits run out and if they wouldn’t benefit from a traditional gym or can’t participate in a traditional gym,” many clients find their way to “Push to Walk” where they are encouraged to keep growing
with the help of one on one trainers. When speaking of who can benefit from their services, “Our clients one unifying condition is paralysis,” said Font. Not everyone can afford this type of treatment, so PTW has formed a scholarship fund as well as organized a Fund Raising Kit, to help clients and their families have access to the program. Information can be found about scholarships on the “Push to Walk” website. “Clients come from as far as East Stroudsburg, Pa. and one client even comes from Manhattan once a week,” commented Font. PTW is working to spread the word about its services to area hospitals and doctors that treat spinal cord injuries hoping that they can “work more closely with each other. We would like to be sort of a resource for people.”
