NCJW/Essex Center for Women Supports Women During the Pandemic: One Woman’s Journey

verwhelmed” is the word Lisa Purvis of Scotch Plains used to describe how she felt upon entering the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women for the first time. She was having a crisis in the middle of a crisis. While mourning the death of their son, her husband had faced a series of health issues, lost his job, and Purvis found herself needing to return to work after a 20-year absence. “We were experiencing financial difficulties in the midst of several other personal family hardships,” explained Purvis, “and I had no idea what direction to take until a friend told me about how much the NCJW/Essex Center for Women had helped her.”

That was just the beginning of a life changing decision. At the Center for Women, Purvis found the help she needed through their many programs including Career Services, Computer Classes such as LinkedIn, Outlook, Excel and WORD, Career Closet, and multiple Job Club workshops. “The Center for Women provides services to all women experiencing challenging times in their lives,” she explained. “They have been a beacon for me, and I am grateful to have them in my life.” Although Purvis began her journey with the Center before the COVID-19 crisis started, services continued to be provided to her remotely throughout the duration of the quarantine.

Women who come to the NCJW/Essex Center for Women often lack the skills or confidence to seek employment or have the skills but may not be sure how to apply them. Through the guidance of the Center, Purvis gained the confidence and support needed to build her

Cyber Safety is Important for Every Grade

eople rely on the internet every day. In recent months, reliance on digital technology was pushed even further as social distancing measures had the world going online for school and work and to maintain relationships with friends and family.

A 2018 report from Pew Research Center indicated that nearly 25 percent of young adults in America reported being online almost constantly. Common Sense Media says teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to roughly six hours for those between the ages eight and 12 and 50 minutes for kids younger than eight.

Students must exercise caution when spending time online. Connectivity can be empowering, but it also puts students at risk from others and even their own, sometimes irresponsible behaviors. Staying safe online should remain a priority for students who must spend more time on the internet and using digital education tools. These are some tips for maintaining cyber safety.

• Exercise caution when sharing information like your name, address, phone number, and other personal data online. Check with a trusted parent or teacher before sharing private data.

• Report any online activity that makes you feel uncomfortable, scared or confused, whether it is directed at you or a classmate.

• Think carefully before you post comments online. Data remains online indefinitely, and your words and actions today can greatly affect your future.

• Respect others online by refraining from demeaning or bullying comments.

• Do not try to get around firewalls and blocked websites set up by school administrators. These limitations are there for your protection.

• Stick to school-sanctioned assignments and internet browsing when using school-issued devices. Administrators may have the right to monitor student activity without students’ knowledge and you can easily get yourself in trouble.

• It is easy to hide or fake one’s identity on the internet, so never take someone you meet or speak with online at face value. Never meet up with someone you do not know or only met online.

• Talk to your parents or educators about extortion and ransomware that tries to trick you into providing payment in some shape or form to prevent a perpetrator from releasing private information about you, advises the Readiness and Emergency for Schools Technical Assistance Center.

Not All Headaches are Created Equal

lmost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Headaches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side effects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?” Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preservatives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus congestion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. Five patients suffering “headaches” may receive five completely different treatments. By addressing the root cause, Acupuncture can be a safe way to prevent and treat various types of headaches, without the unwanted side effects of medications.

Based on the individual assessment and diagnosis, tiny needles are inserted into various points on the body. Depending on the case, small electrodes can be attached to specific needles that elicit a small electrical current. The feeling of the electric stimulation on the needles is a comfortable sensation that generally elicits a feeling of tingling, tapping or heaviness. The electric stimulation en-

Give Individuals and Small Businesses a Government-Backed Line of Credit

The economy is reopening. Consumer spending increased by almost 18% last month, sending the stock market soaring. That’s the good news. The bad news is that with no COVID-19 vaccine or cure on the horizon, consumers have not fully resumed their prepandemic activities, and they might not do so for quite a while. There are no silver bullets to help everyone weather this storm.

There is, however, a policy that could help the economy -- businesses and individuals alike -- in a fiscally responsible manner.

That policy is to extend a low-interest rate, government-backed line of credit to everyone with a checking account.

This idea was first designed and introduced by economist Arnold Kling as a much better alternative to the Payroll Protection Program, or the PPP. He and I wrote a policy brief for the Mercatus Center explaining the details of the proposal, which are quite straightforward. Take the amount of prepandemic income that went into every checking account in the country for the months of January and February 2020, and use that amount to determine each business’s and person’s available line of credit. Implementing this policy requires only that banks write a few lines of computer code.

The beauty of this idea is that the funds go to individuals and businesses without any restrictive terms on what they can use the credit for. This detail is important because it makes implementation simple and flexible, and it eliminates the need for bureaucratic oversight or long and tedious application processes.

It also addresses a problem ignored by other plans to help small businesses: It’s easily accessible to sole proprietors -- a group that includes freelanc-

Mark Shields ers, contractors and other artisans, who represent 81% of all small businesses in America. These sole proprietor firms don’t exist as businesses in the eyes of the federal government, which makes it very difficult for them to access programs like the PPP. Extending a line of credit to every individual is key because if everyone pays their bills, it helps the businesses who have issued the bills.

By now I’m sure some of you are wondering why I describe this plan as fiscally responsible. That’s because the loan is repayable. The interest rate is low, and people who choose to take this credit have several years to repay their debts. Having to repay the loan means that only those who can’t find better ways to come up with the liquidity they need will actually use it.

The plan also gives those who borrow the money total flexibility in terms of whether or when they access the funds. The plan’s design means the government does not dictate its conditions, such as requiring that the borrowing business keep their employees.

We live in a diversity-obsessed country where every major corporation from Amazon, AT&T, and Ben & Jerry’s to Lexus, Nike, Pepsi, and Ticketmaster, to Wendy’s, Yelp, and Zoom bends to Black Lives Matter. MAGA hats and “OK” hand gestures are hate symbols.

Every videotaped squabble in groceries, parks and streets between nonwhite and white people is a national human rights catastrophe. Baseball is no longer the national pastime.

Self-flagellation is.

It needs to be repeated because The Big Hoax still won’t die: Cops are not lurking on every corner waiting to strangle and murder minorities. Arsonists are not hiding in every bush plotting to burn down black churches. Racist kidnappers are not conspiring in every neighborhood to snatch black children from their beds. Hooded phantoms are not running around every downtown with ropes planning to string anyone from lampposts and trees.

Last week, I debunked the white supremacist lynching hoax. After my column was published, the family of one of the alleged black victims, Malcolm Harsch, admitted, after being shown surveillance video of him committing the act, that Malcolm had indeed sadly died of suicide. But no sooner had that social media-manufactured epidemic du jour died down than a new whiteon-black horror emerged: The Return

In Oakland, unhinged Mayor Libby Schaaf claimed that five “nooses” had been discovered wrapped around tree limbs in a city park. A “hate crimes” investigation was immediately launched.

It didn’t matter that a black Oakland resident, Victor Sengbe, immediately came forward to explain that the ropes were part of a larger swing system not to kill black people, but to promote exercise.

“Out of the dozen and hundreds and thousands of people that walked by, no one has thought that it looked anywhere close to a noose. Folks have used it for exercise. It was really a fun addition to the park that we tried to create,” Sengbe told KGO News. “It’s unfortunate that a genuine gesture of just wanting to have a good time got misinterpreted into something so heinous,” he told the station.

Mayor Schaaf and the hysteria harridans didn’t just make a mistake, however. They willfully and purposefully spread The Big Hoax despite Sengbe’s explanation because “(i)ntentions don’t matter when it comes to terrorizing the public,” she said.

And, of course, the taxpayers’ burden will be relatively small because most companies won’t use this line of credit -- and when they do, most will repay it, especially if it’s paired with strong incentives to repay.

Finally, under this system, representatives and senators trying to make a political point by requiring that aid to businesses be conditional on banks extending a certain share of the funds to certain populations will be neutralized. Under this plan, there’s no need to demand that farmers or Native American tribes get a certain share of the loans, because everyone has equal access to them.

If we decide to go down this route, which we should, other programs aimed at injecting liquidity to help firms and indi-

viduals should not be renewed when they expire or run out of money. That means no extension of PPP, no new individual checks sent out and no extension of the $600 per week unemployment insurance bonus. Aid under this line-of-credit proposal is versatile, and it creates all the right incentives to encourage businesses to reopen as they see fit in an economy that’s still shaken up by the lockdown and by consumers who demand to be protected from the virus in ways they didn’t need to be prepandemic.

I’ll say it again: When you’ve seen one social justice huckster, you’ve seen ‘em all. Remember who calls out the horse manure when it matters. Remember who cringes and whinges. Stop buying into The Big Hoax. Have some self-respect, for heavens’ sake. America is falling apart over lies.

The Oakland #FakeNoose ruse fell apart seven days ago, but no sooner had that fiasco ended than the NASCAR hoax erupted on Sunday. Racecar driver-turnedBlack Lives Matter mascot Bubba Wallace claimed a “noose” was discovered in his team garage. A literal virtue-signaling parade convened. Establishment conservatives such as Ben Shapiro, Scott Walker and Nikki Haley joined anti-American liberals in condemning “despicable” racism and declared that they “stand with Bubba.”

Wallace appeared on “The View” to say that anyone who questioned his self-serving narrative was a “simple-minded” bigot who “offends me.”

Turns out, thanks to citizen journalists’ sleuthing and observant pit crew workers, that the “noose” was a typical garage door pull rope present in the garage at least eight months before Wallace moved into it last week. It took a massive 15 FBI agents to figure out the obvious.

f you’ve ever noticed how thirsty you get when it’s hot outside, that’s because your body’s natural water content evaporates more quickly in warm weather. It’s not just your mouth that gets parched, however; your entire body, including your skin, can feel the impact of climbing temperatures.

Moisturize often. Make moisture part of your daily routine, not just when you get out of the shower, but throughout the day.

Exfoliate. Take time to regularly exfoliate, which removes dead skin cells and makes it easier for moisturizer to penetrate and reveal healthy-looking skin. Be sure to exfoliate gently and adjust your exfoliation schedule to your skin’s unique needs so you don’t irritate it.

Consume hydrating foods. Similar to upping your water intake, you can increase your body’s overall water content by eating the right kinds of foods. Many types of produce have a high percentage of water, like berries, melon, cucumbers and zucchini.

6 Causes of Dry Skin Everyday activities, including some that are intended to improve your overall health, can have a big impact on the condition of your skin.

Bathing too often. A nice hot shower or soak in the tub may be a great way to relax and chase away aches and pains, but that heat strips away your body’s natural moisture. Avoid excess bathing, shorten your showers and aim for more moderate temperatures to reduce the impact on your skin.

Too much chlorine. It’s essential to keep pools safe and clean, but chlorine is a harsh chemical that can be damaging to your skin, hair and eyes. To minimize the impact, take a brief shower as soon as possible after leaving the pool to rinse away chemicals, and apply lotion while skin is still damp for maximum absorption.

Washing your hands frequently. Thorough handwashing is important to keep germs and illnesses at bay, but all that washing can wreak havoc on your skin. Excess hand sanitizer. It may be convenient when you’re not near a sink, but the most effective hand-sanitizers contain more than 65% alcohol, and alcohol is extremely drying. If possible, supplement usage with a sanitizing lotion.

Air conditioning exposure. The cooling relief of an air conditioner may help reduce the natural evaporation that occurs when you’re hot and sweaty, but it also makes the indoor air drier, which pulls moisture from your skin that you probably don’t even notice. It’s easier to maintain moisture in skin before it’s dry and scaly, so use a regular moisturizer as a preventive measure and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier to moisture loss.

Soaking up the sun. While many people think of sun-kissed skin as a healthy glow, the opposite is actually true. A tan is a clear sign of skin damage, and the darker the tan, the greater the damage. Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Section First In New Jersey To Conform To Strict International Standards

T

he Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Section of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office is the first in New Jersey to welcome an independent assessment, which concluded the section meets rigorous international quality standards.

Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon in 2019 voluntarily sought the services of Highlands Forensic Investigations & Consulting LLC for an independent and objective assessment of the agency’s CSI Section that provides crime scene and incident evidence collection and analysis to all

39 municipalities in Morris County.

The yearlong evaluation involved an onsite visit by Highlands Owner Howard Ryan and firm Assessors Laura Tramontin and James P. Molinaro, and continuous reviews of continued on page 16

In 2019, CSI Section Detectives and Forensic Technicians worked on 1,291 cases, or, between three and four cases a day.

Under the leadership of Morris County Sheriff’s Office Detective Captain Denise Thornton and Detective Lieutenant Laura Flynn, and with all CSI Detectives assisting, an extensive questionnaire about practices, policies and directives governing eight categories of CSI operations were responded to with 126 detailed and objective written proofs.

To mark the recent, successful completion of the assessment, Mr. Ryan and the assessors visited the CSI Section to present a Certificate of Conformity to the Sheriff and CSI Section Detectives. The certificate validates the completion of a Crime Scene Unit Assessment Program that demonstrates conformity to standards promulgated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 17020), relevant to best practices for crime scene investigations.

Assessor Molinaro is a retired New Jersey State Police Lieutenant, who later worked for and retired from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office in the Major CrimesCrime Scene Unit. Assessor Tramontin has more than 20 years of crime laboratory experience and worked in multiple forensic disciplines that include drug chemistry, toxicology, trace evidence and biology.

Highlands owner, Mr. Ryan, is a retired New Jersey State Police Lieutenant and crime scene investigation and reconstruction expert. His firm provides consulting services

across the United States and Canada.

“I can’t say how proud I am of everyone in the Crime Scene Investigation Section,” Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon said.

“This independent assessment by a forensic firm that draws upon experts with more than 130 years of combined law enforcement experience strengthens the excellence, professionalism and precision of work performed by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI Section. It demonstrates the objectivity of detectives, their adherence to written procedures, and will increase their confidence while explaining and defending their analyses where it counts – in courts of law,” Sheriff Gannon said.

Chester Police Department Chief Thomas Williver, who is the 2020 President of the Morris County Police Chiefs Association, called the CSI Section Detectives “consummate professionals.”

“The CSI Section of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office provides an invaluable resource to the municipal police departments in Morris County. The residents of Morris County should be comforted to know that the CSI Section detectives are following the best practices and standards in Crime Scene Detection, which assists law enforcement in successful prosecution or exoneration of suspects. The detectives are consummate professionals and we are proud to work with them,” Chief Williver said.

Mr. Ryan and the Assessors said the CSI Section was in good shape before the assessment began and now, with its strengthening, is poised to be a model for crime scene units

across the state and nation, particularly as demands and expectations by the public of their law enforcement professionals increase.

“It’s not an easy endeavor to open the door to scrutiny but the Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI Section did that, 100 percent,” Mr. Ryan said.

Assessors Tramontin and Molinaro said the CSI Detectives were fully committed to ensuring that all their work, no matter how minute or routine, was backed up by a directive, policy or procedure. By the end of the assessment, the CSI Section’s conforming policies and procedures were compiled in a volume entitled “Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Manual.”

“The end product is phenomenal,” Mr. Molinaro said.

The conformity assessment required the CSI Section to provide 126 objective written proofs, and in some cases to demonstrate skills in the categories of Facilities, Vehicles, Equipment and Supplies; Investigative Activities; Evidence and Property Control; Training and Professional Development; Ethics; Safety; and Reporting and Records Management.

The scope of questions ranged from inquiries about equipment used in processing activities, to evidence control, to documentation of shooting scenes to verification of reagents and processing powders prior to use.

“The facility is second to none and the people of Morris County should be very proud of the Crime Scene Investigation Section. The level of enthusiasm is high and everyone in the unit is thrilled to be there,” Mr. Ryan said.

Diary of a Scout Leader:

Reflections at Thorpe Hall

By Richard Mabey Jr. ur story so far: It is the first day of summer vacation of 1969. I am 15 years old and have just completed my sophomore year at Boonton High School. It is nearing high noon and I have spent the entire morning painting Thorpe Hall of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, for my Eagle Scout project.

After eating my lunch, a man comes to the door and begins banging on the door and demanding that I let him in. Fortunately, I had locked the door. I try to huddle out of sight of this man, who is continuing to hammer on the door and scream for someone to let him in. Shortly after that, my mom knocks on the door of Thorpe Hall. My sister, Patti, is with Mom. I clean up and we all go to Moe’s Sweet Shop. Cute Mary Tafano is at Moe’s. To my utter surprise, Mary asks me to her birthday party on Saturday. Later that afternoon, I help Mom to get supper ready, while my sister Patti plays in the yard, with her neighborhood friend. After supper, Dad comes into my room, while I am at my desk and offers words of encour-

agement and hope to me. Morning comes, Dad drives me to Thorpe Hall on his way to work. In Thorpe Hall that morning, I hand write an essay, “What Scouting Means to Me.” My plan was to give it to Mr. Marino, Editor of the Lincoln Park Herald, for him to publish. Our story continues.

As I painted the interior walls of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s infamous Thorpe Hall, I dwelt upon the essay I had just written about what scouting meant to me. I had placed it in my shirt pocket, close to my heart. My plan was to type it up that night and present it to Mr. Marino, Editor of the Lincoln Park Herald, the next morning. At the time, I had no idea that the hand-written essay abiding in my shirt pocket was going to change my life.

As I continued to paint the walls, I welcomed the quiet and solace of Thorpe Hall.

There was no television and no radio playing. There was a certain stillness, a solitude that welcomed thought and reflection.

And, in those moments of reflection, insight into one’s self will seem to flow into the deepest chambers of heart and mind, bringing one to a greater understand of their unique Divine calling, their purpose of breathing and living upon this planet.

As I painted, I reflected upon my very early childhood. Mom and Dad had rented a home on Hazel Street in Clifton. I remember that it had a little backyard for me to play in. The two-story home was divided into three separate apartments. My dad had built a little blackboard desk for me. I would spend hours upon hours at this little desk, while my mom cleaned and cooked supper, before Dad came home from work.

I was a very shy, quiet, sensitive child.

My mom often told me that I had a most wild and vivid imagination, even at a very, very young age. Mom also often told me how I would write stories at my desk, even at the age of two, drawing stick figures. I would draw each little scene in a little block then tell Mom the story that I had just dreamt up. They say that you’re not supposed to remember moments when you’re as young as two, but I do remember writing at my little blackboard desk at such a very

young age.

Each and every one of us has a Divine gift, that is uniquely ours. It is ingrained in our DNA. It is something that is very sacred.

Sometimes, we try to deny it, to avoid it, but it seems that our unique Divine gift will call us back, again and again. It is likened to the tides of the deep blue sea. Sometimes it comes upon the sandy shores, at full force.

At other times, it seems to retreat. To allow us to go our own way, but then it returns once again, stronger than ever.

For me, I know in my heart of hearts, that my Divine gift is putting words down on paper. To tell a story. Most of them true stores. But none-the-less, to tell a story. As I painted Thorpe Hall that afternoon, all I could think about was to be in my bedroom, at my desk, typing up the essay that I had written earlier that day. At the time, I had no idea that that very hand-written essay, in my shirt pocket, was going to have a very profound effect upon my life.

Bathroom Remodeling: How to Maximize Style While Minimizing Costs

hinking about remodeling your bathroom?

I’m working with a client now who is dreaming of a “spa-like” master bath. HomeAdvisor says the national average is around $9,800 with a range of $5,900–$14,000.

Here in New Jersey, the reported cost for a “midrange bath remodel” is more than $18,000, with upscale baths costing upwards of $57,000.

Why this huge fluctuation? Labor, of course, is more expensive in the northeast, but materials can vary wildly in price.

Bathroom Tiles Tile is one of the biggest expenses in a bathroom remodel and a quick shopping trip to a tile store will give you a great education.

Sure, you can get a nice white subway tile for about $3 per square foot, but that gorgeous crackled finish tile is only $8. And that marble is only $18! In an average 5x8 foot bath, you can easily spend $1,700 on tile alone.

Now, let’s talk a bit about fixtures The Latest Trend Free-standing Tubs Massive built-in tubs with tiled platforms are a thing of the past. People are replacing them with graceful free-standing tubs. You can easily spend $1,500 or more for a free-standing tub and that doesn’t include the tub filler. These standalone beauties are considerably more expensive than a standard wall mounted tub faucet (usually $1,000 or more).

Tub size is also a consideration; those extra-large soaking tubs might warrant a second water heater. Tub materials include acrylic and cast iron. I like the feel of a cast iron tub and they retain heat better than acrylic tubs. I have a gorgeous one in my bathroom, but needed 4 men to put it in place (an-

other expense).

(Walk-in) Showers Showers are also taking center stage in master bathrooms. Many homeowners are opting to remove their tubs entirely so they can have a spacious walk in. Rain showers are all the rage right now. I love the way they look, but after using one in a hotel a few months back, I recommend a combination of a wall mounted slide bar/ hand held shower and a rain style shower head with a diverter. Rain showers are wonderfully relaxing, but the flow is not adjustable, and have wider body coverage, so you can’t keep your hair dry.

Full body jets and steam are fabulous upgrades to your shower experience.

Costs for these new styles and features run anywhere from $600–$10,000 depending on construction and finish.

Materials for showers include solid surface, stone and a myriad of tile selections. Frameless shower enclosures are beautiful, but the cost is double or triple a standard shower door. And don’t forget about shower seating; it’s nice to have a spot for shaving your legs or just relaxing. Technological advances in the shower allow you to have preset conditions for each user, chroma therapy—and even aromatherapy—for a true spa experience.

21st Century Toilets Even toilets have gone hitech! They come with lights, anti-bacterial coatings, heated seats, even self-cleaning!

I was walking through a design center the other day and the toilet seat opened while I walked by, almost like an invitation!

Furniture-worthy Cabinets Cabinets can be built-in or free-standing to look like furniture. Sinks can be undermount or a stylish ves-

sel sink that sits on top of a base. You can pick up cabinets on Wayfair or at big box stores, but try to avoid medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particle board construction. Neither are good choices for high-moisture environments, so although they tend to be less expensive, they may cost you more in the long-run.

Some high-end manufacturers are building tech into their cabinetry, like USB charging stations, LED lighting and Bluetooth capability.

All very cool, but personally I feel as though too much tech takes away from the relaxing atmosphere.

Faucets (Classic or Trendy) Brass, antique brass and rose gold finishes are gaining in popularity, but polished chrome never goes out of style. Oil rubbed bronze, and brushed nickel are still popular choices for faucets. Look for physical vapor deposition (PVD) finishes because they typically have lifetime warranties.

Pricing for faucets can run as low as $75 for a simple faucet to $20,000 for this digital showstopper I saw on a recent shopping trip.

Some additional bathroom remodeling tips When purchasing a tub remember to try before you buy. Tub pitch is important if you don’t want to be sitting straight up as you relax in your bath.

Look for ceramic disc cartridges and brass construction in faucets to ensure longevity. Plastic interiors are cheaper, but won’t last. Keep in mind, high end brands, make a lower quality faucet for big box stores.

Make sure the drain is also metal as plastic construction with a metal finish can peel over time. And make sure you look for leakproof housing when shopping for shower faucets.

Comfort height toilets are

a few inches taller than standard toilets and are great if you’re tall. But it’s another thing you might want to test drive if you’re “height challenged.”

Don’t mount light fixtures too high or overhead as they cast horrifying shadows that age you. Opt for sconces on either side of the mirror mounted at your head height. You need a lot of light when getting ready in the morning, but install dimmers for when you’re soaking.

Investing in a designer can save you money – you don’t know what you don’t know and they can help guide you thru the myriad of choices out there.

I Remember Dad:

The P-51 Mustang, The Plane That Helped Win WW2

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father’s contribution to the good old U.S. of A. winning World War II, was that Dad was an airplane mechanic at the infamous Hickam Air Field in Hawaii. After Dad went Home to be with the Lord, my mom, my sister Patti and myself, went through Dad’s old paperwork from his years of service in the US Army Air Corps. The old shoebox was filled with awards and certificates for Dad’s service as an airplane mechanic.

Sometime, when I was in high school, I asked my dad why he didn’t take on a job as an airplane mechanic after the war. He simply answered me that he liked the open road. That his job as a long-distance truck driver gave him a chance to see America and meet so many different people.

Dad did work on B-25 Bomber Planes.

But, the plane that he worked on the most, was the one and only, P-51 Mustang. A lot of World War II historians have credited this plane for playing an integral role in the victory of the Allied Forces. the horses that run wild in the rugged west. Rather it was named after one of the greatest fighter planes of all time, the fast-moving P-51.

The wing span of the P-51 Mustang measured 37 feet across. This fighting tiger plane measured 32 feet and three inches in length. It proudly stood between 12 and 13 feet in height. And, this amazing plane could hit speeds of up to 437 miles an hour. It was packed with four to six .50 caliber machine guns, that the pilots would use to rip apart enemy planes. The P-51 Mustang also had the ability to carry up to 2,000 pounds of bombs.

The P-51 Mustang has rightfully earned a place of being on display in the World War II Museum in New Orleans. What puts a chill in my spine, is to think that my dad may have worked on the very plane that is now on display in this great museum. I personally have not ever been to this museum, but I have it on my bucket list to visit someday.

When I was 12 years old, I built a P-51 Mustang model. I remember it so very well, because I was in the Barnett Hospital in Paterson at the time fighting a severe case of rheumatic fever. Dad had bought the model for me. I remember that there

was one nurse who gave me a hard time because she felt that I might be getting high from the model airplane glue. I had a little table, by my bed. When I completed it, I kept that Mustang airplane model on that little table throughout my long hospital stay. I remember that my father was

very proud of me for doing such a good job in building the model.

My dad once told me that the late great Jerry Siegel wrote several articles about the airplane mechanics of Hickam Air Field.

Jerry Siegel, who along with Joe Shuster, were the creators of Superman. Mr. Siegel served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II at Hickam Air Field.

Mr. Siegel’s biographies credit him with writing for Stars and Stripes newspaper, which he did. But Jerry did also write for Hickam Highlights, the official Army Air Corps newspaper of Hickam Air Field. Dad did get to meet this great American comic book icon at Hickam Air Field. My dad always said that Jerry Siegel was a very down to earth, regular guy.

I am very proud of my dad for the role he played in helping the USA win World War II. While, he didn’t hold a machine gun in a foxhole in Europe. My dad, and all the Army Air Corps men of Hickam Air Field, played a vital role in America’s victory. The Japanese wanted to take control of

Hawaii. Make no mistake about it. Hawaii would have been their stepping stone to building an air force focused on attacking America. That is why Hickam Air Field was so important in the Pacific Theater. It could never be caught off guard again, as it had been on the seventh of December of 1941.

Very few World War II veterans are still with us, on this side of Heaven’s Gate.

Most of their stories went with them. I knew so very many veterans of the Second World War, from when I was growing up in Lincoln Park. Most of them were incredibly humble about the great thing that they had done to keep democracy alive for all of us here in the USA. I deeply regret that I didn’t persevere to learn more about the sacrifice these great men made. So many true-life stories of courage and sacrifice will never be known. The veterans of World War II were a very special breed.

Morris Educational Foundation Awards Record Number of Scholarships To Morristown High School Students

s the Morris School District school year comes to a close, the Morris Educational Foundation (MEF), is proud to announce it has awarded $371,250 in scholarships to 23 hardworking Morristown High School students to support their academic pursuits. The MEF, a non-profit organization enhancing excellence in education in the Morris School District, honored the deserving students and its generous donors during a virtual scholarship celebration on June 16.

Each year, the MEF awards the largest number of scholarships to Morristown High School seniors and this year is no exception. After receiving 170 applications from 87 students, 23 students were awarded scholarships ranging from $750 to $100,000. Three of these students received full-ride scholarships thanks to the generous donors who funded the Carl George and Shirley L. Eklund Scholarship and two Judy and Eliot Steinberg Scholarships. In addition, ten scholarships were established by or in support of Morristown High School alumni by families, individuals and foundations.

“We are thrilled to award a record number of scholarships totaling over $370,000 to hard-working seniors at Morristown High School this year,” said Molly Servais, Morris Educational Foundation Scholarship chair and member of the Morris Educational Foundation Board of Trustees.

“The continued generosity of our incredible donors amazes us every year, without whom none of these scholarships would be possible. Many families – especially now – are facing financial hardships due to COVID-19, so we are beyond grateful to be able to alleviate some of their concerns.”

The Morris Educational Foundation is proud to congratulate the following 2020 Scholarship Recipients: Carl George and Shirley L. Eklund Scholarship – Up to $25,000 annually for 4 years Awarded to Jenifer Escobar in the fall who is pursuing a degree in elementary education at Rider University.

Judy and Eliot Steinberg Scholarship – Up to $25,000 annually for 4 years Presented to Anthony Carvajal and Luisa Zapata who plan on continuing their education at The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University, respectively.

Wong Family Scholarship – $20,000

($5,000 annually for 4 years) A merit-based scholarship awarded to Sophia Duby, the MHS Valedictorian attending Columbia University.

George and Michele Becker Scholarship – $12,000 ($3,000 annually for 4 years) Awarded to Sofia Wawrzyniak in her pursuit of STEM fields in college studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephen B. Wiley Scholarship – $8,000 ($4,000 annually for 2 years) Presented to Luna Aguilar for her community-minded leadership both inside and outside of school who plans on attending Yale University.

Spring Brook Scholarship – $6,000 ($3,000 annually for 2 years) Awarded to Estefani Orozoco Rosales who exemplifies kindness and community service and intends to study at the College of Saint Elizabeth.

Capt. Brian J. McNally USMC Scholarship – $5,000 ($1,000 per year for 3 years and $2,000 for the 4th year) Presented to Perpetua Stanton for demonstrating dedicated community service and is using her experience to study nursing at The University of Scranton.

Dorothy F. Johnson Scholarship – $3,500 ($1,750 annually for 2 years) Awarded to Brendan Tierney who intends to pursue business administration at Villanova University.

Javier Avelar Scholarship – Up to $1,500 Presented to Manuela Medina and Mayra Reyes Vasquez, first-generation immigrant students attending Drew University and County College of Morris, respectively.

James B. Galbraith, Jr. Scholarship – $1,500 Awarded to James Moran and Charlotte Ribaudo who have plans to major in psychology and biology at Penn State University and Sacred Heart University, respectively.

Morristown Distinguished Wrestler Scholarship – $1,500 Presented to Marc Dilluvio and Ryan Jackson who have committed to attend East Carolina University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, respectively.

John T. Cunningham Scholarship – $1,250

Given to Zachary Goldman as he pursues sports broadcasting at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

AT&T Pioneers Scholarship – $1,000 Offered to Jason Marum for his dedication to community service who plans on attending Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Mary Bentzlin Scholarship – $1,000 Awarded to Madelyn Wagner who is pursuing liberal arts at American University with a goal towards public service.

Morris Educational Foundation Scholarship in Honor of Ricky Godoy – $1,000 Presented by Ricky’s Compass Inc. to Ryan Falkowski, a student with plans to study psychology at Seton Hall University to shatter the stigma around mental health and illness.

Morristown Animal Hospital Animal Welfare Scholarship – $1,000 Awarded to Kiley Mihalik, committed to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as a pre-veterinary major.

Shirley Shalit Scholarship – $1,000 Presented to Kathleen Conlin who is pursuing a humanities major at West Chester University.

Morris Educational Foundation Scholarship on behalf of the Morristown Fraternal Order of Eagles – $750 Awarded to Molly Cullim and Connor Manion, students pursuing humanities majors at Rowan University and The College of New Jersey, respectively.

Registration Now Open For Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop For Summer 2020 Special Online Session

entenary Stage Company is now accepting registration for their Young Performers Workshop summer 2020 session.

Centenary Stage Company’s critically acclaimed Young Performers Workshop is now seeking new and returning applicants for the 2020 Spring Session. This session, a special 5-week online program runs July 13 through August 16 and will culminate with a week of online cabaret performances. Due to the social distancing, health and safety regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will now be held online and will include a variety of classes in the performing arts including: private voice lessons, stage and special effect makeup, playwriting, monologue workshops, theatre box office, and various dance classes.

Tuition for the program starts at $595 per student, with family discounts available for additional children from the same household, and the registration deadline is July 10.

No experience is necessary, however all new applicants must schedule a zoom interview with program director, Michael Blevins prior to registration. Please call the administrative office at (908) 979-0900 or email the box office at boxoffice@centenarystageco.org.

Hailed as “a state treasure” the Centenary Stage Company Young Performers Workshop (YPW) is a musical theatre training program for children 8 - 18 years old and operates under the auspices of the Centenary Stage Company, a not-for-profit Equity Theatre Company in residence at Centenary University. Dedicated to the enrichment of young lives through the use of theatre arts, the Young Performers Workshop is one of a few youth theatre programs to offer both formal training along - side practical production experience. Career-minded students can prepare for the rigors of a professional career; yet, students not aiming for a professional career benefit from the program, with its emphasis on discipline, self-worth and development of communication skills.

Included in possible course options are private tap dance lessons from Michael Blevins, a Broadway, film and television veteran, who also serves as the director of the program. Various staff members of Centenary Stage Company and faculty of the University Theatre Department, who are experts in their field, will teach the many other courses as a part of the Summer 2020 session.

As in the past, this unique summer session has been designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced performers. The 5-week program will include 4 weeks of workshops and classes and 1 week of presentations online. These presentations will be performed as a “cabaret” online as the nature of the pandemic has affected the ability to host live performances, which is how the program has traditionally been completed.

The summer session will begin Monday, July 13 with cabaret “performances” scheduled for the week of August 9 - 16. Classes meet online via videoconference, by section, 5 days a week between the hours of 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Students selected to the program will rehearse individual projects with each course’s instructor culminating in the recorded performances for the online cabaret. No experience is necessary to participate, and all new applicants who are interested must schedule a zoom interview with program director, Michael Blevins prior to registration. Tuition for the 5-week program is $595 per student, with a family discount of $495 for a second child with family discounts available for additional children.
